Living on the Inside of the Edge
Tumblr media
Chris Kimball wrote a book for members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who find they are living on the edges of the church. It may be circumstances like getting divorced or having a child come out as queer that pushes someone to the edge. It may be being a single person in a church focused on families. It could be a feminist perspective that sees the problems with patriarchy in the church. Maybe it’s learning about some history of the church or a myriad of other reasons that someone finds they are on the margins.
I think this book works especially well for people who’ve been pushed into a different phase of faith. I find most church leaders who are in Stage 3 of Fowler’s stages of faith don’t speak about faith in a way that resonates with me.
Chris Kimball is a straight, cis, married, middle-aged man who once served as bishop and is grandson of an LDS prophet. He decided to include voices with different life experiences. He included a married woman, a Black man, a woman who is single, a gay man (me), and so on.
I’ve read the book and found it speaks to me.
If you’ve been following my blog for awhile, many of the ideas I present in my chapter of the book will sound familiar.
The book is now available on Amazon for purchase. Btw, I get no remuneration, the only financial benefit I will receive is a copy of the printed book.
Below are snippets from each of the chapters written by the contributors.

Marion County High School Wins Award for Voter Registration
Tennessee Secretary of State Tre Hargett recently announced that Marion County High School has won the prestigious Anne Dallas Dudley Silver Level Award. The school earned this designation by registering 85 percent of its eligible students to vote. “Exceeding the 85 percent threshold is a distinction achieved by only 51 high schools in the entire state,” said Secretary of State Tre Hargett. “I…

Bonsai trees, Shirley Temple and Anne of Green Gables
When I saw that they were using the name George Smith for Henry/Edward Creel in The First Shadow, I looked for the mentions of that name in the show (here) (I forgot to include Yuri, which is a reference to Dr Zhivago, and the russian variant of the name George)
After months, I found another George! This could be just a coincidence, but since everything means something, especially in Terry scenes...
She has two books about Bonsai trees. Brenner has a bonsai tree. And we see the books when Hopper asks her what her relationship with Brenner was.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There's also a bonsai tree here, right behind Hopper, hmm ("One at a time", what an interesting line)
Tumblr media
So, the author of one of the books is George F. Hull. Imo, another subtle connection between Terry, Henry/Edward and Brenner (and Hop?)
Tumblr media
But the name of the other author is also interesting. Ann Kimball Pipe
Tumblr media
Anne of Green Gables is the book Hopper reads to both Sarah and El. And there are many connections between Terry and Hopper. Plus, Anne lives on Prince Edward Island (Edward Creel?)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We keep seeing Raggedy Ann dolls (here a mention of father and daughter missing)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And these names connect Eleven and Sarah: Shirley, Anne and Jane.
Becky's aunt, Shirley. Axel calls El Shirley Temple. But I think Sarah, the girl with golden locks, is "Shirley Temple".
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Temple's full name: Shirley Jane Temple.
Anne's (Anne of Green Gables) full name: Anne Shirley Cuthbert.
And since there are many references to Dr Who in the show, one of the Doctor's companions in the 70s was Sarah Jane Smith.
Tumblr media
In conclusion, I don't think Terry was just a student who took part in Brenner's experiments. I think she knew him (some parallels between Mama and Papa and the Pilcher siblings in Wayward Pines)
I'm still working on this theory, but I wouldn't be surprised if one of the meanings of the "swapping places" and "switched at birth" mentions, was that the real Jane Ives is actually the girl we know as Sarah Hopper.

harvest - what fictional character do you most identify with? Why?
Ooh, this is a tough one! Not sure I can single out just one character given who I know myself to be as an adult...I can say for sure that when I was younger, there were a few literary characters I gravitated towards most, likely due to my own personality:
As a child, I had was drawn to both L.M. Montgomery's imaginative and romantic Anne Shirley of "Anne of Green Gables" as well as Donald J. Sobol's Sally Kimball, the no-nonsense, kickass, karate-wielding sidekick to his boy detective, Encyclopedia Brown. Later, I found myself with an affinity to Meg Murry from Madeleine L'Engle's Time Quintet (probably due to her feelings about herself, and her protectiveness towards her youngest brother).
When I read Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice as a teen, I immediately resonated with Elizabeth Bennet, due to the dynamics she had with her mother and father. Let's just say, I could strongly relate. :D
Thanks for the "autumnal ask", @sayonaramidnight!

President Spencer W. Kimball received a revelation to approve the sealing of an MTF trans woman to her husband in the Washington DC Temple in 1980. The sealing was performed by a Elder Hugh W. Pinnock of the Seventy.
Dr. Gregory Prince wrote about it on the blog By Common Consent (BCC) in Nov 2015.
In January 2016, a blogger wrote about the BCC post. In the comments section, a person identifying as Ann wrote to say that she is the person who was sealed. She provides some detail, including the date of the sealing and the name of the Seventy who performed the marriage.
Unfortunately, I don't know an official Church source for this, so I don't know how much it will matter to your family.
It’s important to understand that Dr. Prince is credible because it’s his eye-witness account that we have about a trans woman being sealed to a man in the temple.
Dr. Gregory Prince has a PhD and his career was in the prevention and treatment of pediatric infectious diseases.
He took the research skills in the medical field, combined it with his interest in history, and wrote several books on religious history and theology:
Having Authority: The Origins and Development of Priesthood During the Ministry of Joseph Smith (1993)
Power from On High: The Development of Mormon Priesthood (1995)
David O. McKay and the Rise of Modern Mormonism (2005)
Leonard Arrington and the Writing of Mormon History (2016)
Gay Rights and the Mormon Church: Intended Actions, Unintended Consequences (2019)
He was also interviewed as part of the 2007 PBS documentary The Mormons
————————————————
This woman was sealed to her husband. So either she's gonna be a woman in the eternities, or if not then this is a same-sex sealing. It's an interesting example of how we could expand our use of the sealing power if we chose to

Joseph Smith Polygamy: List of Joseph Smith's Wives
Joseph Smith, the founder of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church), was married to at least 33 women, some of them simultaneously. This practice of plural marriage, also known as polygamy, was controversial during Smith's lifetime and remains so today.
There is no one definitive list of Joseph Smith polygamy and wives, as some of the marriages were never publicly acknowledged and there is discussion about the validity of some of the marriages. However, the following is a list of the women who are generally accepted to have been Smith's wives:
Emma Hale Smith (1827)
Fanny Alger (1833)
Lucinda Morgan Harris (1836)
Louisa Beaman (1841)
Zina Diantha Huntington Jacobs (1841)
Presendia Lathrop Huntington (1841)
Agnes Moulton Coolbrith (1842)
Sylvia Sessions Lyon (1842)
Mary Elizabeth Rollins Lightner (1842)
Patty Bartlett Sessions (1842)
Marinda Nancy Johnson Hyde (1842)
Elizabeth Davis Durfee (1842)
Sarah Kingsley (1842)
Delcena Johnson (1842)
Eliza Roxcy Snow (1842)
Sarah Ann Whitney (1842)
Martha McBride (1842)
Ruth Vose Sayers (1843)
Flora Ann Woodworth (1843)
Emily Dow Partridge (1843)
Eliza Maria Partridge (1843)
Almera Woodward Johnson (1843)
Lucy Walker (1843)
Sarah Lawrence (1843)
Maria Lawrence (1843)
Helen Mar Kimball (1843)
Hannah Ells (1843)
Elvira Annie Cowles (1843)
Rhoda Richards (1843)
Desdemona Fullmer (1843)
Olive G. Frost (1843)
Melissa Lott (1843)
It is important to note that this list is not exhaustive, and there may be other women who were married to Joseph Smith that are not included here. Additionally, the nature of some of these marriages is disputed.
The practice of polygamy was first introduced to the LDS Church by Smith in 1843. He claimed to have received a revelation from God commanding him to practice this form of marriage. However, the practice was controversial from the beginning, and it was not until 1852 that it was officially announced to the church membership.
Polygamy was a major factor in the persecution of the LDS Church in the 19th century. The practice was illegal in the United States, and the church was forced to flee from state to state in order to escape prosecution. Polygamy was finally abandoned by the LDS Church in 1890, under pressure from the federal government.
Joseph Smith polygamy continues to be a topic of contention in modern times. Certain individuals argue that it was a valid custom misconstrued by critics of the church. Conversely, others view it as a type of mistreatment that should have never taken place. The verdict on whether to accept or reject the notion that Joseph Smith engaged in polygamy ultimately rests on personal beliefs, as concrete evidence is lacking, and compelling points can be presented from both perspectives.
