Hmmmm.

Final Nosferatu 2024 opinion after seeing it twice and having a Think (and watching some other adaptations between the two viewings).

After seeing it a second time, I still really enjoyed the film, but I definitely think it's Missing Something to get it from 'good/great' to 'exceptional' for me. I can't for the life of me articulate what's missing in my own words (as opposed to just regurgitating other people's criticism lol), but it's definitely missing something.

But speaking of my personal enjoyment (and not having original thoughts about a movie), the first time I watched the film I was like, 'wow! so many fucked up things happened! I'm in heaven!'.

But then I came across a repeated criticism on Letterboxd (so take it with a grain of salt lol) that the movie lacked sensuality/eroticism. And I was like, 'hmmm.' Then one of the negative reviewers made a list titled 'Movies That Fuck: A List for Sensualists and Perverts' , and I watched a handful of them and I was like, 'Ohh.'

And then I watched Nosferatu again and I was like, 'Ohhhhhh. Yeah. Okay.'

I do think it's fair to say the movie feels like it's holding back in a sense? I can't remember feeling that way when watching scenes with transgressive elements in them during the Witch or the Lighthouse, so I'm not sure what the difference is here. Also, I was a lot less of a fan of the jumpscares the second time around - plus it was noticeably a lot louder? Thought that may have just been the Imax cinema I saw it in. Seeing the film in 35mm the first time was interesting, but I personally didn't notice that it made much difference in terms of quality etc. (as someone who is only a casual film enjoyer).

In summation, I'd like to thank Nosferatu 2024 for being my gateway drug to a world of movies that actually fuck.

i think possibly my favorite anakinism and one i think about a rather unhealthy amount is his body language and how he almost always looks viscerally uncomfortable and vaguely like a child who is scared of getting slapped. even when he’s being confrontational he looks sooo defensive like wow girl you have never fully processed anything that’s happened to you and you will carry the weight of it forever

After rewatching the previous Deadpool movies recently, I have come to the conclusion that the main story thread that ties all the movies together is Wade’s discovery that he really is a bottom.

So while we saw him in the first movie not really enjoying pegging at all, in the second one he won’t shut up about it. Him saying he’s not a natural bottom just ties it all together perfectly; he wasn’t when we first started this journey with him, but he’s gone through a lot of changes that lead to him being a proud, unabashed size-queen.

Been thinking about how Bill legitimately had a horrifying reason (the literal progressive disintegration of the nightmare realm that erases whatever it disintegrates from existence completely) to move himself and his crew into a new dimension. Like that's terrifying. And yet he never utilizes this to his favour. He could have been honest about this with Ford, and you KNOW as long as Bill didn't mention plans of overtaking the earth, Ford would've made the portal for him, both out of Ford's own interest and because Ford when faced with these big moral questions will pull through. But this is a card Bill NEVER plays because although he needs to leave the dimension, he cannot lose face. He can't put aside his pride and admit to the humility that he needs to flee from his dimension, that he's not actually all powerful. And so instead he pretends to be a muse and when Ford figures out something else is going on, instead of being open and humble and saying that his dimension is unravelling, Bill focuses on that he's going to over take earth, that he's actually been a monster all along, surprise Ford!

And part of it is definitely because Bill's built himself up on power and violence and to grovel and earnestly ask for help, to admit that he cannot stop the unraveling of his dimension completely invalidates that; showing vulnerability? Can't do that, even under the guise of lying to get his way. And part of it makes you wonder if it's also a form of self-sabotage, because underneath his deep denial Bill is guilty over what he occurred; he sees himself as a monster and so he'll be that monster, and having people recognize that feels good in the same way that pressing a bruise feels good. But it makes you wonder what would've happened if Bill even just was open about his dimension unravelling and had lied about overtaking the earth.

It's also interesting because although Bill has SOME charisma and can manipulate people decently well (as evidenced by his cult, and pandering to people's desires with Ford, Mabel and Blendin), he refuses to be vulnerable, refuses to not be true to his off-putting self, even when if he was just vulnerable of pretended to not be himself, to put aside the (false) pride he has in himself he would've gotten a portal by now. and part of me wonders if it's because it's this false pride that built on insecurity and denial on who he is he cannot drop that mask.

charles figuring it out not because he realizes he wants to jump edwin's bones (edwin's always been fucking gorgeous) or because he looks more closely at his jealousy when monty was showing interest or even because crystal smacks him upside the head verbally with the "bisexuality is an option for you specifically" speech, but because not one, two, or even three, but SIX DIFFERENT agency contacts congratulate him on he and edwin finally getting together. one shopkeeper mentions she wasn't sure edwin would ever realize he'd been gone on charles the whole time. apparently she'd decided that charles looked at edwin like he was the moon in a night sky, and that it meant charles already knew and was just content being edwin's person in the meantime, and something about how edwin was looking back now made it seem like they were together. edwin's favorite apothecary was kept by a dryad and her wife, and while edwin had been chatting away with the dryad about teethface and that whole... experience, her wife pressed a small book about victorian flower language into charles' hand with a wink and a very unsubtle look in edwin's direction. "boys like flowers too," she whispered to him. the conversations swirl around in his head for weeks before he finally settles enough to be able to talk to edwin about it, and he leads into the conversation by giving him a massive boquet of a dozen or so flowers including gardenias (you're lovely) bellflowers (enduring love) geraniums (unexpected joy and true friendship) and forget-me-nots (fidelity). the flowers get pressed one by one, ever so delicately between the pages of many different books, because edwin keeps every single one.
