Okay i had to talk about this
So
Final fest just got announced a few hours ago
Squid sisters and oth look fire, more pearlina, new amiibos, the setting looks really cool and i like the visual of your inkfish being covered in ink splotches
However
The Splatfest theme has me concerned
Past vs present vs future
Now obviously present isn't going to win so its essentially just past vs future
Why is this concerning to me?
Im big into lore alright, i know almost every piece of lore (except about the bands), that kind of thing
I think no matter which side wins, I feel like its going to be really regressive going into the next game. For past, quite literally. it would probably be a load of retconning like Alterna was. But for future, i also feel like it would 1) mess with some sort of continuity or 2) just be really poorly executed
Which ties into another reason why im nervous about this last fest: the Splatoon devs most likely have in mind what side they want to win, and if that team doesn't win, we'll end up with a weird half-in half-out game like Splatoon 3
Let me explain
Chaos vs Order was HUGE
It was a big deal for a lot of different reasons, but everyone knew it would decide the fate of the next game.
I firmly believe that the Splatoon team wanted Order to win. Genuinely. Possibly they expected Order to win. So when Chaos won, they had to scrape together concepts and make the next game
Which leads Splatoon 3 to having (in my opinion) an uninspired main hub (whose chaos elements are rarely explored) and uninteresting idols (who i love but they feel so shallow to me compared to the other idols)
I think it's likely Alterna was meant to be the order-oriented story mode. Because if you remove the tutorial area, there's nothing "chaotic" about 3's campaign. The pristine, high-tech stages complete with an AI main character all scream Order.
Dont get me wrong, I think it's narratively fitting that Mr Grizz, the only one of three neutral parties in chaos vs order, is the antagonist of the most thematically ambiguous campaign.
But to have an entire order-esc campaign AND TO HAVE SIDE ORDER (which i could go on another probably controversial rant about) feels kind of redundant, and i to this day am upset that we didn't see more chaos elements beyond the hub, idols, and ig you could count the salmon run plotline? Idk man
Anyway, what im saying is im worried a potential Splatoon 4 would have the same sort theme confusion, where we wouldn't be able to just explore the aspect of the team that won and then maybe wait for DLC—we'd have a weird blend of the two that try telling their stories at the same time and end end up being ultimately underwhelming.
And lemme just say, this isnt hate, these are scattered thoughts ive been marinating on for a while because i love the Splatoon franchise. Its one of my special interests and ive been playing since the original. But theres so much i just straight up dont like about Splatoon 3 that im worried will continue in a sequel
I dont want to spark controversy, just constructive conversation. Be aware that it is 3 AM at the time of me writing all of this and its completely a train of thought type thing. I can get my thoughts together in the morning if anyone wants but yeah, im just worried
#splatoon#im probably gonna get flak for this#i just ask yall stay kind#i know theres a lot of memes about people saying splatoon 2 is better bc of nostalgia this isnt that#as hyped as i am for this fest im just worried for my favorite franchise#idk man i just want a spinoff game one of these days#and some closure on who a supposed agent 7 could be#ik the only canon agents are 1-4 and neo but let a guy dream

FF8 Live Reacts
Started the ps4 remaster of final fantasy 8 in may 2024. Finished in August. I've never played it before. Here's my live reacts. This is a compilation of the discord messages I sent during this time period while playing it.
Spoilers: I didn't like it and this is mostly a rant of me hating on it
(dates are dd/mm/yyyy)
Got rid of my ps5 a couple weeks ago, but guess who remembered there were still ps4 games they were interested in? I just bought disco elysium and ff8 remaster. Will be delivered on the 20th I've actually never played ff8 at all, but have always wanted to and now I'm going to attempt to make more headway in ps4 ff8
and boy do I have THOUGHTS about ff8 most of which are "ff9 is better" and "man RPGs back in the day really expect you to already know how RPGs work" but I'm only 2 hours in so who knows!
I definitely didn't pay enough attention to the dialogue originally, so I had to pull out a game walkthrough for THE FIRST AREA Which is fine, I guess, because this is a direct repeat of what happened when I played ff9 for the first time - got lost in the world map when the area I was supposed to go to was literally straight ahead quest markers and shit were amazing inventions, man, I'm glad those exist now
27/05/2024 11:21 I'm trying to give ff8 the old college try, but if I keep having to consult the playthrough every 5 minutes, I might just pull the plug
anyway I did not have much on the to do list for today, but I somehow finished it I will now go off to try to progress in that ps4 ff8 I could go off on complaining about stupid things with this game but I've brought on enough negativity for today ps4 ff8 it is, then I have come to a good point in the game to start grinding Somehow this is more fulfilling than the actual story
I guess I know now why I've wanted to play ff8 for so long. Teenage me would have loved ff8 First of all, squall (the main character) is just the perfect character design for my desires at the time, bonus points he looked just like me fr Also I love scars on the face, he was probably the whole source of that archetype The story is about them becoming mercenaries and doing mercenary things. Like's like, the bread and butter of every kid chat roleplaying those days, myself included of course. Who WASN'T a mostly silent merc who secretly hated everything but everyone looked up to? Unfortunately, my disappointment starts with the very beginning of the game: the opening cinematic
It plays off like some kind of abstract dream thing, but no, you're actually supposed to believe this is a thing that actually happened in real time. it's not an epic battle, it's just a stupid sparring match between classmates(? friends?) random visions of a woman are totally what causes squall to not beat seifer!! /s the scar DOESN'T HAVE ANY SPECIAL MEANING :tisacry:
Epic battle, epic music, mysterious circumstances
Actually just a training exercise between two 15 year olds who should not have been given the ability to use real weapons The first thing that happens in-game is squall going to the infirmary for his new injury, which somehow isn't serious or prevents him from doing anything that day, but is also enough to leave a scar. On his face.
Then we have Quistis, his instructor, who has only been teaching for 1 year, and turned 18 while she was teaching (Why are these people so young?) And she very much behaves exactly like a 17-18 year old, so it's no wonder that after the merc test she reveals to you (Squall) that 1. she got fired from teaching and 2. She's definitely DTF you (Squall is completely oblivious though) You finally meet the girl of your dreams at the ball you're voluntold to go to as a new merc, her name is rinoa and her opening line to you is "You're the best looking guy here" except that LATER you learn this is actually seifier's (the guy who gave you a scar) girlfriend Now, don't ask me how this works, because rinoa says that she met seifer that night but then when seifer "dies" when he encounters the sorcess for the first time, she says he was her boyfriend and has lots of good memories of him so yeah this doesn't make sense at all but WHATEVER
The "main" story is that a country(?) Is attempting to establish independence from another country, who is trying to take over the world with the help of a sorceress. I am currently only 6 hours into the game / not that far into the story. I have only just seen her for the first time, where she is like "You should come with me" and seifer just goes with her because he's a fucking tool One of their teammates blabs that this coup is from their organization ("the garden" ), so there might be some retribution (surprisingly there is none??????) and by the time the group gets back to a garden (HQ), they say that seifer was tried and his sentence was served, and everyone assumes it's execution. I have just left the garden and am on my way to… somewhere (I honestly forgot where lmao). And I am taking this break to grind Which leads me to my next complaint: the gameplay I HATE THE JUNCTION SYSTEM I like the IDEA of the junction system, and I can kind of see how FFX's sphere grid (and aeon upgrading) grew from it (I love the sphere grid, but it was also very imposing to a newbie). My main problems with the junction system, aside from the fact that it's got a severe learning curve, is that a GF (summon) must be junctioned to a character in order for that character to be able to have ANYTHING on their battle menu aside from "attack" Do you want to be able to use magic in a battle? haha fuck you, need a GF junctioned. How about an item? Nope, hope you have junctioned a GF to this character! haha!! Who the fuck decided to link these things
The OTHER main thing I hate about the junction system is that no character can perform magic innately. It has to be junctioned too. And in order to cast a spell, you have to steal it from someone else first ("stock" the magic). And what's even worse about this magic stocking thing, is that your stats are connected to your magic stock, so using any of your stocked magic will result in lowering your stats, creating this awful system where you should get 100 (the max) stock of every spell that has worthwhile stats increases and then NEVER CAST THEM IN BATTLE EVER So anyway I'm grinding in order to get 100 of the spells FOR EACH CHARACTER so I can get max stats I also am grinding to overlevel my characters because this absurd system has made it guaranteed I will concentrate on physical attacks OH THE OVERDRIVE SYSTEM It's called something else but I can't remember what atm It kicks in when you're low on health, or, in the ps4 version (which I'm playing) you cna press a button and it becomes available whenever. But the thing about it is that the interface sucks. It's not a separate menu option. It's a submenu of attack. so in order to use your overdrive, you have to put your cursor on "attack" then move it to THE RIGHT and then select the overdrive you want to use. (side note: pagination in this game is to the right/left, which I also hate) So if you are like me, and have the battles on x3 speed (another thing they added to the ps4 version) and are just holding down X to get through most of the boring ass battles, you will never do any overdrives I have the cursor thing on memory, so maybe if I turn overdrives on manually and select them once they'd automatically do it from that point forward, but that seems like cheating? So I haven't done it Actually I'm very confused on why the manual overdrive button is a thing that was added at all well anyway this concludes the rant I had bottled up from yesterday I will now start grinding on ps4 ff8 (As I chose to write this instead of actually starting the game when I mentioned it)
I discovered the written seed tests. I couldn't get higher than 80 on the first one. So of course I looked up the answers and now I'm at max level with no more tests to take 😂
At least I won't have any money issues anymore now
07/06/2024 23:47 I think I hate all the characters in ff8
Not only that, the music choice sucks ass
Like it actively makes every scene more boring
Idk how they got so much so wrong in this one. I'm glad 9 was my first ff
I just got to the scene where squall "dies" from the first fight with the sorceress.
Ff8 is just boring so far. I'll keep playing it until I either beat it or actively hate it
29/06/2024 18:48 I made it to disc 2 of ff8 Kind of disappointed there's no in-game indication that you have moved to disc 2 [in the remaster], aside from the subtitle in the save file
23/08/2024 21:35 Turns out the button that gives you the attack specials in ff8 also makes it so you never take damage wtf I could have been using god mode the ENTIRE TIME THIS CHANGES EVERYTHING
I guess after I get this gf I want I'll plow through the rest of the game on god mode… Although with godmode now I don't even need this gf… Ugh
24/08/2024 00:07 Made it to disc 3 Game story still feels pretty stupid. But I'm more than halfway so hopefully I can just get through it. Godmode certainly makes that way easier
30/08/2024 01:12 I am about to fight the final boss of ff8 The story never made sense, was always stupid, and I never would've made it here without a guide But it will be over soon and I can maybe start disco elysium and hate on that next
30/08/2024 01:53 I'm done With ff8
[Someone else says: bit of a mindfuck innit? ]
No I'm just disappointed in it
------------
My final thoughts: So many things went unanswered. Rinoa and Squall's sudden romantic interest in each other never made any sense. Maybe the [possession + time travel + teen mercs/renegades + amnesia] plot points were semi-original for the time, but nowadays they feel lazy and overdone.
The junction system is horrible. The card game was too confusing to me so I never played it, however that's definitely on me and I feel like if I were younger it would've been a great game (I was a huge fan of Tetra Master in FF9).
The game controls are too clunky with no hints and there were several areas where if I had not looked at a walkthrough I never would have found or did the thing the game needed me to find/do to progress. It seems like they fixed that in FF9 with the little "?" thought bubble when you're near things that should be interacted with.
The one redeeming thing about the FF8 ending was that the sorceress Ultimecia is obviously AMAB but uses female pronouns, so I guess we could say that technically FF8 was before its time in trans representation lmao.

Sims Tagged Meme
No one tagged me, but I thought it'd be fun to do anyway! :>
1. What’s your favorite sims death? In the Sims 3, my favorite death has to be the meteor shower death (poor @faeriefrolic's Madeline cannot catch a break with that one xP) and in the Sims Medieval, my favorite one has to be the Pit Monster one!
2. Alpha CC or Maxis Match? Maxis Match all the way, there's just something about MM that makes it so appealing. It's so bright and colourful and I love it so much :> (Maybe alpha is just sorta...creepy to me idk?)
3. Do you cheat when your sims gain weight? Nope, I don't! I love body diversity in my game, however I used to when I used to play the Sims 4! But now, I don't mind any and all body shapes :D
4. Do you use move objects? I do, but only for decor items so it looks like the space is lived in. Though, one time I did use move objects on a computer and my sim used it as a table to eat her sandwich on.
5. Favorite mod? Definitely NRAAS and the Randomizer mod. NRAAS is a must to keep the game running and I like the well, randomness of the Randomizer mod!
6. First expansion/game/stuff pack you got? I first got into the Sims when I was given the Sims 2 by my grandmother. I think my first pack I got was Pets, but I honestly don't remember... it was a while ago lol
7. Do you pronounce “live mode” like aLIVE or LIVing? I pronounce it as aLIVE.
8. Who’s your favorite sim that you’ve made? For me, my favorite sims that I've made are actually based upon two OCs that I have - Connor and Leon. They're my babies and I'll love them forever! Plus, I like how Leon's voice sounds as a simbot! If we're talking regular sims though, I have two. One is from my 'N Cheese legacy back in the Sims 4, her name was Blueberry 'N Cheese (I have her as my origin profile!). The other one is Linden, who I sadly had to retire for now as I've been away for several months. Maybe one day I'll return to his save but for right now I don't want to do any challenges.
9. Have you made a simself? I did once and they promptly died to a vending machine. But like, mood.
10. What sim traits did you give yourself? Dog person, Night Owl, Computer Whiz, Childish, and Family-Orientated.
11. What is your favorite EA hair color? Probably the blonde preset, but other than that one, I just don't like any of them sadly - I prefer the custom ones that I make.
12. Favorite EA hair? Idk why but I really love that Victorian era one that has a big hat. I actually used to have it as CC when I played the Sims 4 so you can imagine my surprise when I realized it was actually from the Sims 3.
13. Favorite life stage? Young adults and elders!
14. Are you a builder or are you in it for the gameplay? Honestly, I love both! I mainly build tiny homes, though but I'm still getting used to Sims 3's build mode.
15. Are you a CC creator? Technically I am if you count those scuffed clay hairs I made for the Sims 4 years ago, but maybe someday I'll touch Sims 3's modding tools!
16. Do you have any simblr friends/a sim squad? I have @faeriefrolic who I met irl before, and she is the sweetest person to know! :D But other than that, I keep to myself but don't be afraid to say hi to me! I know I've been on a hiatus but hopefully sometime in July I can start again, as I've been visiting some family in America owo
17. What’s your favorite game? TS3! Ever since I've re-visited it, it's one of my favorite Sims games! It's a tie between 3 and Medieval, honestly.
18. Do you have any Sims merch? Uhhh, I had like one Sims-related sticker on my old laptop but I don't know if I'd be able to peel it off without wrecking it.
19. Do you have a YouTube for sims? I used to, but I got really self-conscious of my voice so I don't anymore.
20. How has your “sim style” changed throughout your years of playing? I was very minimal at first, as people usually are when you first play a game. Then I got into NSB challenges, and I loved the wild hair colors that you could put your sim in! (I got up to the yellow gen in the Sims 4). Now, I'm a mix between banilla and berry sims.
21. What’s your Origin ID? ShuckleBerry662, if you play the Sims 4 - my scuffed builds are on the gallery. :P
22. Who’s your favorite CC creator? Oh shit, uhhh I love a whole bunch of 'em! I love @chazybazzy, @poisonfireleafs for hairs. I love @sweetdevil-sims and I recently discovered @teekapoka's stuff too! (idk why it didn't link but oh well.) Also the lovely @lazyduchess for their smooth patch!
23. How long have you had a simblr? I honestly don't remember, maybe 2016-ish? It was mainly Sims 4 and I abandoned that one sooo uh...yeah.
24. How do you edit your pictures? I don't edit my pictures at all bc I don't have the patience for Photoshop and my game can't handle reshade sometimes.
25. What expansion/game/stuff pack is your favorite so far? I love Ambitions and University Life! The Ghostbuster career is one of my favorites and I get excited whenever I hear the ghost sound cue.
26. What expansion/game/stuff pack do you want next? The 64-bit expansion would be an awesome addition to the Sims 3! 😊

More Myself Than I Am - Chapter III
Chapter 3/?

Fandom Bungo Stray Dogs
Pairing Ryuunosuke Akutagawa X reader

Symbols ⭕ . ➕ . 💛
Warning (s): none
Tagging @lasidollily @darling-imobsessed (if you want to be tagged in any of my stories, just send an ask or a message 😉)
N. A.:So I should have posted this chapter a few days ago alongside the hype of season 4 trailer, but this week got me so tired that I barely edited anything *sighs* Anyways, here we are with some progress between Aku and reader's relationship!
Though this chapter is a bit calm and with little to no action, it has its spots of tension here and there, details that move the plot forward even if it does seem stuck. Here we see more of reader's relationship with her powers when the pressure of her siblings's presence is taken out of the count, the fragility of the communication between the girls despite their efforts in making it work, a bit more of mystery (who was watching her?) and even more of Akutagawa as a 19th Century gothic hero *mysterious classic music starts playing*
Hope you enjoy the calmness anyway, for it's about to be shaken ;)
The sound of the key being turned inside the lock echoed on the corridor behind you. The old scent of the building that spread when you opened the dusty windows two days ago lingered between that narrow space, for the janitor still hasn’t come to clean it. Well, at least the lights were turned on: there were days when you would come back from work and find the building immersed in the dark, thus taking twice the usual time to walk up the stairs and find your apartment’s door.
You entered the apartment, locked the door behind you and sighed. A moment of peace, at last. That your family wouldn’t get back so soon, you knew for certain: Arthur, with his passion for restaurants and night events, wouldn’t let the girls go back home before 10:00 PM, unless Virginia begged him; Frances, who shared this preference for staying out late at night, would only agree with him and try to keep Virginia entertained as long as possible. Virginia, on her turn, was too gentle to make her wishes stand above the others’, so she would agree in staying even if she was about to lay her head on the table and take a nap beside her plate. You couldn’t say you didn’t pity her, but you had to admit you took advantage from this too.
For the next hours, it would be only you and your thoughts.
You dropped your bag, took some clean clothing and went to take a good bath. After that, you felt your stomach growling and prepared something quick, using the minimal kitchenware. You used to take this moment to disconnect from the outside world’s matters and to relax your limbs and your mind, because your evening was just starting.
When the dishes were finished, you tied your hair up in the same style you used to work at the bakery and began the cleaning session.
It was liberating, even therapeutic to feel the pressure increasing behind your eyes, your consciousness expanding through the whole apartment, identifying the positions of each object, checking which places needed attention and knowing you could lift the heaviest ones with just one move of your hand in order to sanitize the spots under them. You sort of had fun with this: comparing to how you could do things there, you were far from competent while you did your tasks at your workplace.
The living room was your first choice, as usual: there were less objects but more dirt, since you three spent most of your time there. You moved your hands and fingers with extra care to avoid accidents (like that time when you threw the couch on the ceiling and ended up creating a slash on it; fortunately, you fixed it before the girls came back), then went to the spots under the furniture and cleaned them with water and a cloth, putting the objects back to their original place. You repeated the process in the kitchen, the bathroom and the bedrooms before finally considering your work done. Being free to use your abilities and having no human to stand in your way, all the work took half of the time a normal person would need to do it.
Finally, you went to your room and spent the last hours of the day reading a novel you bought a year ago but didn’t have time to start, until it came the time to sleep. After arranging your bed and getting an extra pillow for a backache that has been bothering you since the afternoon, you changed into a night gown and untied your hair, then headed to the bathroom one last time to take care of yourself.
When you went back to the room, you were tired, but content. You turned out the light, took off your slippers and moved the sheets away… But didn’t lay down.
You turned to the window, still open, and a thought flashed through your brain.
You ran to it and looked outside, checking the streets, the corners, the other apartments’ windows and the tops of the buildings. You swallowed. Everything was quiet now; one or two lights poured from the neighbors’ windows, and there were almost no people in the streets. A car was moving away, soon getting out of your sight after a corner. That night looked like all the others on the outside.
Then why does my heart is beating so fast, as if someone is watching me?
You spent some time in front of the window, trying to calm yourself down. Of course there was nothing to worry about; you couldn’t see anything or anyone suspicious. You were tired, to say the least; this, or you were simply bothered that you forgot to close your windows before you started making the furniture levitate, something that might have been spotted by curious eyes on the other side of the street if they looked at the right angle. You should be more careful, really.
A chilling breeze was blowing at that moment. It entered your room, moving your hair and exposing your shoulders, covering your skin with goosebumps, barely distinguishable by the remnants of the streetlight reaching that height.
You started to feel embarrassed and closed the window. Since when you were so sensitive?
Lying on your bed, you waited for the deserved sleep to come, wondering if it would be really better if you didn’t have any power.
***
The next day at the bakery, you sensed the moods were lighter.
You didn’t know if it had something to do with the warm, sunny day out that welcomed you since you left the house or anything else, but you weren’t carrying the weight of yesterday in your chest. The ache on your back was gone, too. You could say you were quite well; not even the extra use of your powers last night provoked the expected headache, as it happened countless times in the past... Speaking of this, the strange episode with the hypothetical observant no longer occupied your thoughts: surely you were imagining things. Maybe you should have accepted Arthur’s invitation and chill: you’ve been working too much lately, and this effort was taking its toll.
Right now you were engaged in a cheerful chat with your team mates between one table and the next. You were smiling at something one of them was saying when the door was opened and you found your quiet costumer entering through it.
Akutagawa didn’t take long to spot you in the middle of the place. He went to you and nodded in his usual politeness.
– Morning, y/n-san.
This time, you risked greeting him with a larger smile.
– Morning, Akutagawa-kun – and, feeling you had to add something – I hope you’re feeling better today.
– I am, thank you.
When you noticed he was carrying a paper bag, he didn’t mind satisfying your curiosity towards it, for catching your attention was the object’s precise function.
He offered it to you.
– I bought this on my way here. I hope it pleases you.
You accepted the gift with a sweet “thank you”, but your heart jumped when you recognized the bookstore’s logo on the sides of the bag. You opened it and took its content, your face warmed by the expectation. You saw the cover... and gasped.
The reddish paper cover, the golden lettering, the oval picture of the couple, the tree and the old house. That elegant edition of Wuthering Heights just came to your hands, ready to be yours.
– I… I can’t believe it! – and giving him an incredulous look – You… didn’t need to bother yourself with this, it is…
As if reading your thoughts about the book’s price and other related issues, Akutagawa silenced your worries with a calm reply:
– It is not a burden at all. Please, accept it.
You opened your mouth to argue, but sighed and gave up, thanking him again and saying you were going to pause your current reading and start that book right when you got back home. You led him to his usual table and took his orders to the team, then headed to put the book with your things on the cabinets.
He left at the usual hour, but you spent the rest of your shift holding back a smile that insisted in showing up whenever you got distracted.
***
You entered the apartment and found Virginia knitting a scarf in the living room. Though she had an impressive concentration while working, the bookstore’s bag you carried besides your own backpack didn’t go unnoticed by her, who received the new element with sweet curiosity.
– I thought you were saving money, y/n-chan – she chuckled.
You startled, but smiled right after, closing the door behind your back. Despite the heat that came up to your cheeks, you had no reason to invent a story about it.
– And I am – you shrugged – This one was a gift.
– Hm – your sister lowered her gaze to the scarf, adjusting the tricot – I see.
You rolled your eyes, joining the game.
– I see what?
– A gift from him, right? – she laughed – From that young man that came here with you yesterday? Akutagawa was his name, wasn’t it?
By now you were laughing too. The way Virginia only needed half of a fact to understand a whole story never ceased to impress you.
– Yes, that’s his name, but why are you so sure it was him?
She raised an eyebrow.
– Who else, then?
You sighed and united fumbling palms like a prayer, the bags making a loud noise in the quiet apartment.
– Okay, but... please, don’t tell anything to Frances – you made a worried face – She won’t leave me alone if she finds out!
Virginia shrugged.
– She never leaves us alone no matter what we do, dear – and whispering like in a gossip, – But it’s not like she has the finest taste in boys. For example, do you remember that one in our hometown? That one mom couldn’t stand?
You weren’t a big fan of that type of conversation, but you couldn’t help chuckling when you recalled the boy she was talking about.
– Oh, that one who was crazy for cherry gum? Yes, of course I do! And she swore she would never fall for “that type”, as she used to say.
Virginia blinked in a cunning way.
– And then we see how fast the world can spin. Now, you can’t say he would be a match to our Victorian gentleman, right?
– Hm... I don’t think this is a fair judgment...
Your sister sighed.
– Listen. What I want to say is that if he wants to give you a book and to walk you home, and if you enjoy these things, you have all the right to be happy with this.
You swallowed. Yes, you loved Virginia in every aspect, except when she started with those observations. If it was because she was right or because you didn’t like the invasive sensation of hearing the truth from a sibling, you didn’t know, but you wouldn’t be surprised if both were correct.
When the conversations went through what Virginia wanted to show and what you wanted to hide, you usually tried to end it and go for your mundane tasks, but you were not always successful in this.
– I... I need to go...
You passed by her chair and would have reached your room, but a grip on your wrist made you turn and find your sister’s worried gaze.
– Y/n-chan, you know don’t need to ask our permission to live your life, and I’m tired to see you trying to – her hand slid down to yours in a kind gesture – This isn’t about us, it’s about you. So, enjoy his company if you want to. Thank him for the book and for any small favor. And don’t mind us. I wish you the best, and Frances too, even if she doesn’t tell you.
You spent a moment in silence, measuring what you just heard. That was not the first time Virginia spoke that way for herself and for Frances, and you doubted it would be the last. Your feelings, whenever she did that, would always be the same, too. God, that was so tiring: seeing her putting so much effort in maintaining peace between you three would have the opposite effect, for you would only think she never left the past behind. It was irritating, too: you already had to deal with your conscience every day; having another person – the very person harmed by your mistake – was more than you could stand.
You said you wanted to take a bath and enjoy your gift, and Virginia let you go. No attempt to continue that conversation came, whether from you or her.
***
When you finally had a moment to open the book, you found out your surprises were still not ceased.
You were sitting on your mattress, already in your nightgown, your back leaning on the head of the bed, having the desired volume on your lap. You unwrapped it from the plastic cover and was going to discard it when you looked inside the paper bag and noticed was something in it you didn’t see when you grabbed the book. You checked it and saw it was a paper note.
You unfolded it and found a brief text written with black pen, in an elegant, fluid calligraphy, and read it:
Y/n-san,
By the time you find this small note, I hope you have already accepted this book as a deserved gift. I say deserved because an initial refusal, mostly moved by your modesty, seems more than expected as I write this. However, I am determined to see it becoming a treasure in your hands, under your appreciative sight the same way it was while in the bookstore’s shelf, out of your reach.
To me, presenting you with a book which story is loved by both of us is the most appropriate manner to thank you for your diligent services during these months in which we became acquaintances, as well as for your discretion and tenderness during the execution of your tasks, though you know, as much as I do, that the story of Cathy and Heathcliff has little to do with these things.
Finally, I hope you think of this when you start your reading, and if possible, whenever you decide to revisit these pages in the future.
Sincerely, Akutagawa R.
You spent a moment in silence, staring at the paper, not knowing if you were appreciating the beauty of the calligraphy, processing the clearness of the feelings expressed in those few lines or finally admitting that Virginia was right and there was something going on between Akutagawa and you.
Under his name, you noticed there was a phone number.
When you came back to reality, you turned on the bed and reached to your phone, recharging under your pillow. You opened the keyboard and typed the number…
But your thumb didn’t press the “Call” button.
You swallowed. What if it was too late and he was already sleeping? Even if he wasn’t, was he occupied? Was he willing to talk? Couldn’t you wait to thank him in the next day, when you would certainly meet again?
But… wouldn’t I regret it, then?
You stared at the phone’s screen and, ignoring your heart pounding in your ears, you made the call.
You waited… and waited… And when you were about to give up and pretend you never saw that number on the note, someone answered.
– Hello?
You recognized his voice and almost sighed in relief.
– Hello… Akutagawa-kun.
– Y/n-san. You found my note, then?
– Yes. And… – you chuckled – You’re quite a writer.
– Ah. Thank you. I’ve put some effort in it, despite it being short, so I’m glad you liked it.
Seconds of an awkward silence, and you were the first to speak:
– Well, I’m just calling you to say thank you for the gift again. I really loved it… And I’m sorry if it’s too late, I should have waited until tomorrow…
– No problem – was the calm reply – I wasn’t sleeping.
– Okay…
– Y/n-san, let me ask you. Do you like tea?
Though the question sounded like something out of nowhere, you didn’t refuse an answer.
– Yes! I use to prepare it for myself when I come back home – and with justifiable hesitation – Why?
– There is a new tea house at the … District, that I’ve been wanting to visit. I was thinking if we could go there tomorrow, after your shift.
Your heart ached inside your chest with the sudden invitation. That was the second one, if you counted the time he asked to make you company the previous day.
Just like with that one, you didn’t have reasons to say no.
– It’s alright for me. It’s been a while since I… – you interrupted yourself before you said had a date – Visited this kind of place, so… yes. I’d like to go there with you.
Something close to contentment was sensed in his tone when he replied to this.
– It’s decided, then. May I pass at your place? The … District is at that direction, so we can go together.
– It’s a good idea. But.. ah, I just remembered something important!
– What is it?
– Tomorrow is my boss’ son’s birthday and he wants to prepare him a surprise, so we will leave the bakery before the evening. Would it be a problem for you if we go while it’s still day? I could go back home and prepare myself, then call you to say I’m ready.
– No, that’s okay for me. It’s actually even better.
– Oh… good – you shrugged – So… see you tomorrow. Goodnight.
– See you. Goodnight.
When you ended the call, your hands were shaking so much that you took a long time trying to reconnect it with the charger. And even after you did it, you wouldn’t go back to your previous calmness and fall asleep so soon.
Isn’t it scary how little it takes for things to change?

Let’s talk: Vlive Asks and comment/chat discussions
From @cottoncandykings: Hello! As u probably know jimin just went live recently and again he mentioned mandaggo and discussing about doing it with tae. I just find it so weird though. I mean jimin keeps constantly mentioning it and its not like vminnies were begging or dying for a vmin live everyday even before jimin mentioned it last year. Even now most including myself dont really care that much ofc i m happy if they do one together. But the way jimin keeps mentioning it is so weird. Like surely if he wanted to do it so badly he could have talked to tae privately and arranged it by now. And if tae is the one that doesnt want to do it then idk why jimin is pushing it. But what was really weird to me this time was that he said there were lots of comments about mandaggo yesterday in zoom call and yet they didnt mention it yesterday but suddenly today without prompting he talks about it. I also hope no one spammed the zoom call chat or the vlive chat with requests for vmin live (i didnt see any) bcoz thats just unnecessary and demanding. I hope vminnies wont demand/ ask for another memeber when one of them is live. Its just disrespectful. This turned into a rant sorry. Do you think it was weird too?
Since Admin 2 can’t type their thoughts themselves, I’ll relay their thoughts to you instead, since they had more thoughts/opinions/ideas in regard to this than I do, to be honest.
Admin 2 is sure that there is a good chance that we will get a vmin vlive sometime soon, which I know contradicts their original opinion and post from a few months ago, but there’s a reason for it. During the zoom meeting between BTS and ARMY they noticed something I don’t think anyone else noticed, or at least neither of us has seen any vminnies mention it anywhere, which in conjunction with Jimin’s vlive today and saying how he’d talk to Tae about doing a mandaggo vlive again, as well as another observation a little while ago, leads them to this conclusion.
So, the observation from the zoom meeting. Basically at one point when the question of Jimin doing a vlive arose Tae looks at Jimin and then he nods while smiling which in turn makes Jimin smile as he turns away from Tae and back to face toward the camera before answering the question and saying how he’ll come visit us the next day. Which he did.
Then the other observation from a while ago, this one being from their OT7 vlive celebrating their BBH100 #1 on June 29th where at one point Jimin says something but slips into satoori after which Tae encourages him to say that again but this time in the Seoul accent, so the way they actually should speak, which Jimin says isn’t difficult but he doesn’t actually end up repeating what he said.
And lastly in today’s vlive Jimin mentioned how he’s using satoori quite often but that he isn’t all that good at doing it on command or at teaching it to others, which is something he’d have to do for mandaggo but I’m sure he’d manage just fine if the time came for it.
Based on that Admin 2′s thoughts are basically that Jimin really meant it when he said, last year, that he’ll bring Tae around for a vlive, that it wasn’t a joke or a way to tease us with something he knew he wouldn’t be able to deliver, but rather that up until this point they weren’t quite sure how to do it. Which sounds a bit odd, I know, but what they mean is that if vmin were to just sit down in front of the camera and were supposed to just talk based on what the chat would give them, it would likely just turn out awkward and weird and no one, including them, would really have fun. Even more so when we take into account how idiotic the chat is during regular vlives so now imagine if those two were to do one together that’s just a casual chat. It would likely end up in disaster and honestly I wouldn’t wish it upon them to read all those awful comments that they would likely get, even worse ones than they already get normally, to be honest.
But now that the whole satoori thing was brought up, and Jimin actually mentioned mandaggo and wanting to bring it back after so many years, Admin 2 thinks that they must’ve finally figured out a solution to their problem, if you can call it that. Doing mandaggo would basically mean they would have an activity, something to do similar to how they did those ASMR videos for the Japanese Fan Club which were fun and cute, and so Admin 2 thinks that perhaps chances are we will finally get the vlive we’ve waited for so long (though like many others I’ve long given up the idea).
Another confirmation is that during his vlive today Jimin basically said that he only came by for a little while since they are quite busy and had to soon get ready for work with the other members but that he’ll return in two or three weeks for a more proper, longer, vlive. So, he could’ve treated today’s vlive as the promised one but instead he saw it more as a bridging one between the zoom meeting and the proper vlive he wants to do, so is it the farfetched to think that he had proper plans for a vlive, like doing mandaggo, but it just wouldn’t have worked out time wise today so he moved the actual vlive he wanted to make to a later date?
One last thing (well two actually) that has nothing to do with this question but Admin 2 wanted me to include it anyway is that one, have you noticed how Tae and Jimin were both on weverse around 3 am (until almost 4am (also both of them posting a comment to some post at 03:41 am KST)) one after the other (though with one day of a break in between them) recently and then also two, that Jimin was up until like 6 am (since he posted on weverse around that time) on the 8th and then during the zoom meeting Tae answered a question by saying that he’d been awake until 6 am the previous day (also the 8th) since he wanted to see the sunrise? Which is also something an anon mentioned to us. Curious, isn’t it?
From anon: I request both admins to please post this ask. So jimin wwnt live today and one of the accounts on twt posted a screen cap of them commenting 'touch your hair if vmin is real' in the live chat and jimin's reaction to it. Now idk if it is an edit or real. No matter i just want to say its not ok to bring up ships in front of the members no matter which ship it is. We dont know the reality of their relationship so lets not make them uncomfortable. Its not a joke. Its not funny. Be respectful the members are real people.
(Admin 1 taking over from this point onward) This ask nicely ties into the last one that’ll be further down in this post since they cover a similar issue of sorts. But let’s start with this one asking about, essentially, vlive comments and the things fans ask/comment, which also ties in with the above ask as well.
The thing with the vlive chat, and especially comments/questions that are like anon said, questions or “commands/requests” about touch your hair if XYZ ship is real or cough twice if you love XYZ member or, likewise, comments such as where is XYZ member or what are the other members doing, unfortunately those have been a steady and unchanging part of the vlive chat since basically forever. It’s been an issue on and off with different intensities though I feel like it’s gotten worse again this year. Particularly if we look back at the vlive Tae did with Hobi and Yoongi and how essentially the entire chat was filled with comments related to Xkook and not much else.
If my memory doesn’t fail me we once even had a situation some years ago (2016) where the chat during Hobi’s vlive was so bad, as in so full of questions about that other members instead of him, that you could see he was upset about it and eventually he handed over the vlive to Jimin, whom the chat had requested Hobi to visit, and Hobi just left. And I can’t blame him for it since the chat must’ve made him feel like basically no one cared about him so what was even the point of him being there, right?
Personally I’ve long given up looking at the comments during vlive because they just make me cringe and feel bad for the members, especially when I think back to vlives such as Yoongi’s D2 one last year where he was so excited to talk about the songs and the process of making the mixtape and yet so many of the comments were just unrelated nonsense and annoying request like speak english or can you say my name or say hello in XYZ language. If it makes me question why the people posting those questions are in the chat, why they are fans to begin with, imagine what the members must feel like, how discouraging that must feel like. After all they are musicians and yet so rarely do they get questions about that. Or rather they do get them but they are just drowned out by nonsense. Which is a shame. And also very disrespectful but any attempts that were made to remind people to be respectful, to remember their place as fans, to focus on the member that’s doing the vlive instead of asking about the others, and to keep ships away from the members have failed because some don’t care and will continue to not care.
From anon: what are your opinions on the Qs that were asked during that zoom meeting thing between BTS and ARMY?
Now I’d like to preface my answer to this last question by saying that by no means do my grievances come from a place of jealousy or anything. I’m very happy for all the ARMYs that won their spot, that they got to participate in the event and that BTS got to see ARMYs again even if only on screens and not in person still. No, my issue stems from something completely different, and I don’t want to say that the system chose the wrong people, because that would be mean and also who even knows how the winners were chosen, if it was pure luck or there were some actual criteria that went into the process, but the fact is that only a select 200 ARMYs got that spot out of however many that applied, so basically for some this was a once in a lifetime chance, right, even just getting this close to asking Bangtan a question and have really great chances of having them give you an answer while acknowledging you somewhat instead of just seeing pure words on a screen, you know what I mean?
Now imagine you are one of those 200 ARMYs and you get the chance to fill the chat with questions along with the other 49 participants of your session and you decide that asking questions such as what it’s like for Jimin to work as angel, if Namjoon ever broke a bicycle, or why JK smells the crowns of the other members heads? Or even worse, you decide to ask about JKs shower routine and in which order he washes his body? And sure, the “fault” doesn’t fall completely on the ARMYs alone, after all it’s the members who read out those questions and not some magical off screen entity, and since I wasn’t part of the event I can’t say with a hundred percent certainty that no one asked any “proper” questions, but if those were the questions that ended up being read out loud, is it that hard to guess that likely all the questions looked similarly?
Which brings me to my main grievance of it all: have you forgotten that you are fans of musicians and not reality TV stars or vloggers/influencers? I know there were likely no rules for what questions you could or couldn’t ask (except for probably ones that were 100% about shipping or far too personal), but really, you get to ask your favorite band a question, something you might never, ever get the chance to do again, and your first thought isn’t to ask about their music but instead about some unimportant nonsense like the angel question or if they differentiate between the clothes they wear at home and those they sleep in? Like sure the angel one was kinda funny, maybe, and Jimin handled it in a cute way, I applaud him for it, but was that really necessary?
I know someone asked JK about Decalcomania, as well as Tae about his mixtape, and Yoongi/Jimin about Tony Montana (season 2), but other than that were there any other questions about their music? Perhaps I’m overthinking things, maybe I’m exaggerating and maybe I’m the only one who sees an issue with this, but if I would’ve won a spot, I’d rather have asked something about their process when writing lyrics or creating beats or how they prepare when learning new choreographies, what it’s like to be on tour (though perhaps that would be a mean question seeing as tours aren’t really something that’ll continue being possible for a while still), you get the point.
It makes me wonder if it was just bad luck or if it had something to do with how old the participants were (I saw some being as young as fifteen), which isn’t to say that teens can’t ask smart questions because they definitely can just like adults can ask stupid ones as well, but somewhere something, in my opinion, just went weirdly. And maybe that was the point of it all, for the event to be casual, funny, lighthearted, but my question then is when is the time for music discussions? For fans to ask those types of questions that actually have something to do with the boys careers? When even journalists aren’t asking them proper questions, ARMYs aren’t either, so what is the point of it all then?
Then again, after the event concluded and Seokjin came onto vlive he seemed so happy and excited, so maybe they had fun (I mean they seemed to have fun) and didn’t mind at all that the questions were lighthearted and silly, maybe I’m the one making mountains out of molehills. I don’t know, but anon wanted to know my thoughts/opinions, and this is them. Once again, I don’t mean to be mean toward the ARMYs that got rightfully in, that won, and I don’t want to insult them for the questions they asked, perhaps I just expected/hoped for something a little different? And perhaps I’m the only one. I don’t know.

Alright.
So.
I really wasn’t trying to get too deep into the mess. Why? For a couple of reasons.
1) Because when I joined this ADCU fandom--I was very aware that I was going to see racist shit. A lil’ internalized sexism. All of that. I’d mentally prepared myself for it before I came through, or tried my very best. As I stated in a post a week or two ago, I was very vocal about these things in my younger adult years, but now, I am tired and just no longer interested in letting racism, misogynoir, microaggressions, and other things on the internet get my blood pressure up (because I’ve gotta deal with it in real life). I simply block, filter, and move on. This is my path. Not saying that it’s right, that’s just the stage that I’m in right now.
2) What I’ve heard of this controversial fic is offensive to me. More so, the erasure of certain elements about the Civil War is what I found offensive. Did it piss me off or enrage me? No, because again, I’m tired lol. Offended, yes? Angry--me? No.
Now, I’m not writing this as a “woman of color”. This is a BLACK woman about to tell you what HAS pissed me off over these last few days. And I’m saying it straight from my account--not on anon or some account that just blossomed a couple of days ago.
I’m writing this as a Black woman who lives in a neighborhood that used to be a plantation (big house and slave cabins still up and intact up the street from my home) - because there is barely a place in my city you can walk where your feet don’t touch land that used to be a plantation, or a slave trading station, or an auction block, or a public whipping post, etc. I live in a city that is ENTRENCHED in “memories of the Civil War” -- “good” and bad memories.
I’m writing this as a Black woman who once worked next door to a Confederacy Museum--MUSEEEEUM--and watched old white men sit outside of the building with their flags. Or, who once had an old white man come to into my job, walked up to me with a shady, condescending glint in his eye, to ask me questions about “the museum next door” that he hoped to visit one day.
I love historical AUs and write them myself. Me, personally, I’m not gonna tell anybody they can’t write romantic/smutty Civil War AUs (I’m just gonna fucking block them). Because people are gonna do what they want and as we’ve seen demonstrated, there are some people who are gonna do the shit HARDER if it’s called out. But I DON’T have the privilege of reading something in that setting and being able to imagine myself as a landowner. This is a fact.
People can say “oh, well there were Black landowners back then!” But could they own that land without a “guardian”? Could they walk around town without “papers” to “prove” that they were free? Do we think that free and/or landowning Black people were just walking around untouched in the 1860s and AFTER? We LITERALLY just commemorated the 100th Anniversary of the Tulsa massacre. Come the fuck on, now.
I can BARELY write my 1920s AU shit without thinking about how race impacts the my OCs. I just CAN’T make that separation. And it must be nice that some of you WOC and white readers can do that. I’m happy for you. Whatever.
Now, from what I’ve gathered, I believe that this is the point that was originally being brought to SH--that not only could some of her audience not see themselves in this story, but some of them actually might be hurt by it. And instead of being thoughtful of that, excuses were made. The “colorblind” card was thrown out and it was stressed that “sides” in a Civil War setting were written “vaguely”. The dismissal and denial is what has frustrated me.
But ah, here’s the thing.
This is a pattern.
I think some of you might be under the impression that this might be the author’s “first misstep” (that is, if you think that is the case at all). I’m going to tell you a quick story. And this story is not secret--these incidents and the posts (pro-cop posts) that correspond to them were shared publicly.
I’ve long had SH blocked for awhile. Why?
You remember when another writer whose name started with an “S” went through this whole thing about all cops not being bad? I was actually quite friendly with that writer and expressed among people (including SH) that I wanted to reach out to S because I knew she was young and probably just hadn’t lived enough life and been around others to understand why their stance was problematic (and wrong). But then, I found out that she’d done the whole deleting POC’s comments thing...
She’d reached out to me wanting to talk, but at that point, after learning about commentary deletion, I didn’t want to be bothered. I decided that I would not reach out to her. I unfollowed her and moved on, because as I later told SH, Aiyana Stanley Jones was born around the same year that S was--but unlike Aiyana (who was murdered by WHO?), S will be fine. And I don’t regret my decision. I would have been a fool to try to be the Black person who “reaches out” to try to educate somebody. And I would have regretted doing so.
So, anyway. SH tried to encourage me to talk to S anyway, because S felt so bad and hurt. I politely declined, gave my reasons why, and me and SH left it at that and remained cordial. This is something I do regret because I should have known better. Because guess what? About a month later (IF THAT), SH made a post regurgitating S’s same pro-cop sentiments.
But I made no fuss. I simply unfollowed and blocked. She’d shown me who she was and I finally decided to believe her. No need to argue. I had no desire to “call her out” because she already knew how I felt--and she’d only shown me that (as history has shown my ass time and time again), I don’t matter to her and I don’t count in the world she’d rather exist in--(edit: or at the very least, the fanfic worlds she’d like to create). Calling her out would have been fucking pointless.
So, I can’t let this week end with y’all thinking that this is just some “slip up” or misstep--or some “sudden attack” made out of jealousy or whatever other shit people are spewing. These recent events are merely a day that has long been coming.
Now.
I’m about to put “Civil War” in my filtered tags and content, and go on about my day. Bye.

so let’s talk about the new bak-u-go stuff
hey guys, so long story short, I took all of the bak-u-go stuff out of my weekly liveblog/recap post, and put it into its own separate post so that it didn’t take over the recap completely. so this is my big “all of my thoughts about the second OFA user’s vestige in chapter 304” post, basically.
my opinion going into the chapter
okay so without mincing words, my very controversial stance on this theory going in was more or less, “yes, I do think that maybe that Bakugou-shaped shadow who looks exactly like Bakugou could, in fact, be Bakugou.” not only that, but it strikes me as much more feasible than the alternatives, “Bakugou’s ancestor who looks exactly like him was the second user of OFA for some reason, and Horikoshi keeps hiding his face because... we don’t really know”, or “this is just some random guy with spiky hair, and again his face is being hidden just because.”
like, there is some reason we’re not allowed to know what he looks like, especially at this point. and writing-wise, there are really only three possible explanations for this. (1) it’s a red herring meant to trick us for some reason, (2) his character design hasn’t been completed yet, or (3) something about this character’s appearance is a spoiler, and the reveal is supposed to be a surprise.
regarding (1), I actually think this is the case with the Third. clearly he is not Kirishima as some had speculated. he doesn’t appear to be familiar at all. so if that’s the case, why is his face also being hidden? my theory is that it’s simply to lampshade the fact that the Second is being hidden as well. if Second was the only vestige whose face we couldn’t see, it would be beyond obvious at that point that he was someone familiar to us. having another vestige doing the same weird stuff makes him stand out slightly less.
anyways though, as far as Second himself being a red herring, I guess he could be. but a red herring for what? not to say it isn’t possible, but I don’t really see what the purpose would be.
regarding (2), this is a remote possibility, but imo it would be pretty uncharacteristic of Horikoshi. plus by this point he’s had more than enough time to flesh the design out. all of the other vestige character designs are completed, and we’ve seen all of Second and Third except their fronts and faces by this point. so I’m gonna go out on a limb and say this isn’t the reason.
which leaves (3): this character’s identity is important in some way, and is being purposely kept secret. this to me implies that it must be someone we know (because otherwise it wouldn’t be a spoiler). which basically means that no matter what, the possibilities are about to get weird.
my thoughts on the new “evidence” in the chapter
first off, my biggest impression is that there really isn’t much new evidence at all either way lol. but okay, let’s review what we got.
I’m ignoring Third at this point because I honestly have no idea who he is. he may very well be someone we haven’t met yet, so I don’t think there’s much point in speculating. so let’s focus on Second instead.
the hair
first off, his hair isn’t quite right to be Bakugou’s. it’s darker than Bakugou’s hair usually is, at least in the close-up, and also the hair on the nape of his neck doesn’t quite look right; it’s got more of an undercut vibe than Bakugou’s usually does. Bakugou’s hair is usually more out-of-control dandelion puff from the back.
so yeah, I’m not sold by this image. though on the other hand, I will say that as far as the argument that his hair is too dark, that’s undermined by the wide angle panel right before the close-up in which his hair isn’t colored in at all.
so yeah, it could just be something about the lighting in the close-up. also, the RHA scan seems to have upped the contrast a bit more than the original image.
here it doesn’t seem to be quite as dark compared to the wall he’s standing against. I could be wrong, though; we’ll get a better idea when the official version is released in a couple days.
but overall the style of the hair seems more off to me than the color. on the whole, I’m not really convinced either way here, so I’ll move on.
the rest of him
okay so first off, obviously this is not Bakugou’s current hero costume in any way, shape or form. honestly my first thought was “what is Shippuuden-era Naruto doing here in the OFA Mystical Space Land” lol. so yeah, no idea what that’s all about.
however he does have gauntlets! so this is definitely someone with some sort of arm or hands-related quirk. and Kacchan does have a new gauntlet design that we’ll see in movie 3, so it’s not outside the realm of possibility that these could be another new design along those lines. that said, these are clearly not his current big ugly grenade-style gauntlets.
last but not least, this person seems older than Bakugou, which for me makes me considerably less enthused about the possibilities here, since I’m a weirdo who likes the idea of a timeskip even less than most people seem to like the idea of time travel, lol. then again there really isn’t much here to support that “he seems older” statement; that’s just the general vibe I get from him, idk.
I will say though that he has Kacchan’s same triangle-shaped torso with the same broad shoulders and upper back tapering down into a more slender build. that stuck out to me right away when I looked at this image. but he really does give off Naruto vibes as well lol, like I can’t unsee it sob.
anyway, and last but not least,
the hidden faces
because so far most of the attention seems to be on their appearances. but those aside, this chapter introduces a very interesting question that this mystery will have to address one way or the other. namely, why are these two vestiges turned around and not interacting with the others?
“so that we can’t see their faces, duh” -- no, I get that, lol. but let’s talk in-story explanation now. why are they huddled in the time-out corner not moving or speaking? what could possibly be the reason for that. we can see them clearly enough, so we know that they’re “unlocked” and fully formed in that sense. All Might’s vestige is the only one that’s not yet visible, and supposedly that’s because he was quirkless?? and so he didn’t have a quirk factor that could be passed down through OFA initially. though I didn’t quite understand all of that part tbh.
but so then what’s the deal with these two losers? are they just antisocial or what? OFA First says that the vestige souls which were chilling out inside of OFA gradually gained the ability to take a physical form as OFA grew more powerful. and these two clearly have taken a physical form. so then why don’t they talk? there are only a few explanations for this that I can see.
(1) it could be that these guys are still alive, just like All Might (who doesn’t seem to be able to speak either, although the other vestiges can communicate with him in other ways).
(2) or, these guys are purposely hiding from Deku for some reason. (or at least, hiding as best as they can in this weird little rock slab floating in space.)
that’s it. if anyone else can think of more possibilities let me know because I’ve been sitting here racking my brain lol. this is all I can come up with. and honestly, either of these explanations would be suspicious as hell, theory-wise. if these two vestiges are still alive, that almost guarantees time travel right there. and if it’s simply that they’re hiding themselves from Deku, then that begs the question of why. which, again, leads us back to “they’re familiar, and Deku would recognize them.” (though that last bit goes against what I was saying earlier about the Third, doesn’t it. honestly I’m just spitballing here now, I haven’t really thought this all out too thoroughly.)
soooo... yeah. that’s pretty much where I’m at. nothing about this seems to make any more sense than it did a chapter ago tbh. though I will end this post by addressing one more thing, just cuz.
“this theory is dumb and makes no sense”
the correct statement to make here isn’t “this makes no sense”; it’s “we don’t know what’s going on yet.” if and when we finally get an explanation, then we can start making judgments about how much sense it does or doesn’t make. but until then we have nothing to base that verdict on.
same thing with “it’s dumb” -- look, “I hate time travel plots because they rarely work” is a valid opinion. but “rarely” isn’t the same thing as “never.” there are good time travel plots out there. idk why everyone keeps rolling with the assumption that this is going to be some cliche plot hole-filled science fiction bs narrative with a tragic ending. we have literally nothing to base that on. we have no answers and a whole lot of questions, is what we have.
maybe it will be disproven! or maybe it won’t, and it will be exactly as awful as everyone thinks and it will ruin the manga entirely. or maybe it will actually be really cool. we don’t know yet. that’s my one and only conclusion here -- that we shouldn’t jump to conclusions. but then again I guess it wouldn’t be BnHA fandom if we didn’t. anyway so thus concludes my post.
#bnha 304#bakugou katsuki#bak-u-go#bnha theories#bnha meta#bnha#boku no hero academia#bnha spoilers#mha spoilers#makeste reads bnha#and now I gotta get back to editing the recap post which is a hot mess rn lol#I might be later than usual with that today#it was a weird chapter and I had to read multiple translations to figure out wth was going on#but anyways

Owen Strand Screen Time Meta Post
Welcome to the first in a series of posts analyzing the screen time of characters post season 2 of 911 Lone Star. I thought this idea would be more interesting, and efficient, than trying to put all of my thoughts for every character, and the entire season into one post.
First up is Owen because he’s the highest billed character and because when I put out a poll, he was the only character no one wanted to see first. So let’s dive in!
Read my analysis below the cut:
Season 1
I’ll be honest, when I started calculating the screen time I had no idea how much of an impact Owen’s time would have on the fandom. I really don’t recall there being that much discourse over it until I posted the results... and it didn’t really bother me before I saw the numbers? But after I did that first episode I was like oh..... yeah that’s a problem.
At least that pilot episode was the most screen time he’s gotten, though I’m willing to bet that will change with season 3′s “Owen Begins.” I mean in a way, the pilot episode was his begins episode (or could even be considered “Begins Again” like what they did with Bobby on 911) since it was about him packing up and starting a new life as captain of the 126. Essentially, the pilot episode served to set up that this would be Owen’s show.
The other episode where he took up a larger chunk of the screen time was 1x06 (”Friends Like These”) which makes sense because it was exploring his friendship with Billy... little did we know how important that would be later.
Most of his screen time in season 1 was concentrated around 8-10 minutes. Obviously that is the most screen time given to a character on the show, which makes sense since the show and the character was written for him and he hold the executive producer title.
The least amount of screen time he got was around 7.5 minutes in 1x03 (”Texas Proud”) and 1x08 (”Monster Inside”). I do find that especially interesting since those are still episodes where he played an important role in the plot, compared to other characters whose least amount of screen time meant they were lucky if they spoke one line. It’s also worth noting in 1x03, Owen still had the most screen time (though Michelle was a close second) and in 1x08, Michelle did beat him by a few minutes.
Season 2
We really went into season 2 with higher hopes, though it wasn’t much better (I would argue there was some improvement... but I’ll talk about that more later).
It says a lot that Owen’s top 3 episodes are 2x10, 2x11, and 2x12. Though he didn’t beat his previous record of over 20 minutes, he got nearly 15 minutes in 2x11 (”Slow Burn”)... which if you didn’t already know, is also the episode that was written by his son, John Owen Lowe, and directed by his brother, Chad Lowe. He also got around 12 minutes in the two episodes that buffer that one, 2x10 (“A Little Help From My Friends”) and 2x12 (”The Big Heat”). This three episode arc accounts for about 32% of his screen time this season.
Before that major arc in 2B, in the first half of season 2 his big episodes fell around 10 minutes each; 10:45 in 2x07 (”Displaced”), 10:00 in 2x03 (”Hold the Line”, the crossover), and 9:45 in 2x01 (”Back in the Saddle”)*
A big difference for this season compared to season 1 was that there were episodes where he did not get as much screen time. Whereas his least screen time was 7:30 last season, this season there were four episodes that were lower than that; 7:15 in 2x06 (“Everyone and Their Brother”), 6:00 in 2x13 (”One Day”), 5:30 in 2x02 (”2100°”), and of course, a mere 1:00 in 2x09 (“Saving Grace”). That is really the only episode where Owen has completely stepped aside, playing a very minor role in the overall plot. In 2x02, 2x06, and 2x13, Owen came in second behind Tommy (in x02 and x13) and Paul (in x06). And in 2x09, he came in fourth (the only time thus far he was not in the top 3) behind Judd, Grace, and Tommy.
(*I’ve mentioned the new method I’ve been using to calculate screen time on a few occasions now and I’ve only revisited 2x01 so far (almost done 2x02 tho) anyway, I’m using the data I collected using the old method for these posts but in an effort to be totally upfront about how the new method is going, Owen’s screen time for 2x01 is actually about 30 seconds higher than I originally calculated, coming it at 10:15 instead of 9:45. Not much of a difference, and idk how much the rest of the new method results will impact this meta post, but I wanted to be clear about it).
Total Screen Time
As the infographic above states, his total screen time for the two seasons comes in at nearly 3 hours and 45 minutes. Divided in half, thats around 112 minutes per season, which does fall in line with the totals for each season (103.25 minutes for season 1, 120.5 minutes for season 2). However, there was only 10 episodes in season 1, compared to the 14 we saw in season 2. With that in mind, you can begin to see how season 2 was actually a smidge better than season 1 when it came to how much screen time was given to Owen. But the real indicator is the averages, which is discussed next.
Average Screen Time
As you can see in the infographic, Owen’s average screen time in season 1 was around 10:15 and dropped to 8:30 in season 2. The series screen time (which is the total divided by 24, not those two totals divided by 2) comes in at about 9:15.
Obviously, even 8.5 minutes is still a huge amount of screen time. But compared to over 10 minutes in season 1, his average screen time is seeing a clear downward trend. I would take this as a win. It’s a small change, but it’s an indication that we are heading towards a day where Owen doesn’t eat up the majority of the screen time each episode.
Outliers
The idea of outlier episodes wasn’t even something I considered until a few weeks ago. This would be an episode where the screen time total was either much higher, or much lower than what is normally seen for that character.
According to my calculations, in season 1 the pilot episode at 20:45 is an outlier for Owen. In season 2, 2x09 (”Saving Grace”) is also an outlier at 1:00. And looking at the data set for all the episodes in series, both numbers (20:45 and 1:00) are outliers. (Outliers change based on the data set, so we need to look at each data set (season 1, season 2, and series) individually and not assume that an outlier for one season would also be an outlier for the series).
What happens when you remove the outliers?
That brings us to the above question. Is Owen’s 20+ minutes in the first episode the reason why his time is so high in season 1? Is his 1 minute in 2x09 bringing down his time in season 2? And what about the series?
I’m not sure if it’s worth examining how the totals are affected since that’s pretty self-explanatory. Obviously all the totals will go down if you take out the outlier episodes. But where it makes a difference as far as we’re concerned is the averages.
Obviously the average number is how much you should expect to see that character during an episode. But if 20 minutes is much higher than normal, and 1 minute is much lower than normal, then what happens when you take out those numbers? Well, something actually fairly interesting happens, that almost contradicts what I said before about the progress...
When you remove the pilot episode from the data set for season 1, the average comes to around 9:15. When you remove 2x09 from the data set for season 2, the average comes to around 9:15. When you remove both episodes from the series data set the average comes to (you guessed it) 9:15.
9:15 is more indicative of what to expect for Owen’s screen time in an average episode, and since it hasn’t changed that says a lot about the progress we’ve seen for screen time distribution.
Now as for what to do with this? Honestly, I have no idea. I mean the fact is that while these episodes are outliers, they did still happen. There is an episode where Owen only had about a minute of screen time; just like there’s an episode where he got over 20 minutes. Outliers are weird because I don’t want to not acknowledge them, and I think it’s important to look at when studying the screen time as a whole. But as for the reported numbers, we can stick with what is laid out in the infographic.
Closing Thoughts
It’s hard to say whether this season saw less Owen, or about the same. Of course when taking all episodes into account, it is less. But when you remove the outlier one minute episode, it’s really not that much better. But then again, the fact that we did get an episode where he was only on screen for a minute is a very good sign, so taking it out of the data set doesn’t exactly make sense.
I guess the biggest takeaway still is that Owen still has a lot. He always will. Even if he did have less this season, it’s still much more than the characters who come in second and third had. I like to think it will get better, and maybe it will, but personally I’ve accepted that Owen will always have the most, and he will have much more than other characters, but it shouldn’t be as much as it is. Hopefully his screen time will continue to trend down and allow for more time to explore the other characters on the show.

Movie Night, Pillow Fight [Version 2]
By: SassyShoulderAngel319
Fandom/Character(s): DC/BatFam - Jason Todd/Red Hood
Rating: PG-13/T (maybe pushing M? but there’s still nothing super explicit. this is just a lot dirtier than I usually write holy cannoli. Heavy kissing, a little bit of suggestive dialogue and narration, minor swearing?)
Original Idea: This (V1 follows this idea a lot more than this one, which I spun off of about halfway through and did my own thing)
Notes: (Masterlist)(By Character)(About Me) I didn’t think this would be as long as Version 1. I was wrong. This one is ~200 words longer, at 3,491. Version 1 here. They start the exact same but change about halfway through. I wrote both of these two over the course of 1 day by the way, and refuse to pick a favorite. @welovegroot @jason-redhood @jason-todd-squad
^^^^^
“No, Bruce,” Jason said sharply into his phone as he grabbed his motorcycle helmet. “I’ve already told you a hundred times: Tuesdays are my day off. Unless it’s a Court-of-Owls-attacking-All-Hands-On-Deck emergency, I’m not going on patrol. I’m allowed one night off per week. And I have plans. It’s weekly movie night with a friend of mine. We’ve been doing movie night since college and I refuse to disappoint her. You know why I chose Tuesdays? Because Gotham’s crime rate is lowest. You’ll be fine without me.” He hung up before Bruce could reply.
—
I opened the door. “You’re late,” I said.
“Yeah. I had to go to two different stores to find your popcorn because they were out at the first one,” Jason replied, letting himself in and dropping his motorcycle helmet on my couch. “Let me go change into my sweats.” He pulled his grey sweatpants out of his backpack, two microwave popcorn bags falling out.
I grabbed them. “Thanks Jay,” I said playfully.
He gave me a brief hug before stepping past me to my bathroom. “The things I do for you,” he teased with a sigh.
“Get out of those jeans. You know they aren’t allowed,” I retorted before going over to the microwave. My bathroom door shut loudly. I boosted myself onto the counter and watched the popcorn spin in the microwave.
By the time Jason emerged from the bathroom, only one bag was done. He leaned against the counter next to me, arms folded, and joined my staring.
“So what movie did you bring?” I asked. “You said in your text it was one of your favorites.”
He beamed at me. “Well, my friend, we are watching the very first ever made Frankenstein. From nineteen-thirty-one.” He fixed me with a stare as my shoulders slouched. “Don’t you start moaning in complaint. You put me through watching that awful musical last week—”
“Excuse you, Phantom of the Opera is also a classic.”
“It’s basic.”
“You’re basic.”
“Maybe so, but after going through that ordeal, you promised we could watch one of my favorites. I managed not to fall asleep last week, so it’s my turn.” He stuck his tongue out at me, then shook his head. “I really need to refine your taste in theatre. Remind me to convince Bruce to give me his season tickets to the real opera. He never uses them anyway. Doesn’t know what he’s missing out on.”
Given Bruce’s parents were shot after leaving the opera, I imagined there was some childhood trauma there. I didn’t bring it up with Jason. We didn’t talk about family besides passing comments on movie nights.
When the second bag of popcorn was finished popping and put in its own large bowl—I had quite the collection of popcorn bowls, usually given to me—we went to my room.
Ever since we’d graduated college—two years ago—we’d had movie night in my bed, rather than on the couch, like we’d done in my dorm. The bed was comfier and gave us more room to spread out. I can’t even remember who suggested it, but it was probably me one week when I was sick or something and we’d just stayed that way ever since.
I’d always hosted too. In college it was because my roommate was never there, and now Jason just liked the escape from his family. They didn’t know where I lived, so the one time he hosted and they interrupted by coming over, he and I agreed we’d just have it at my place. I liked his brothers and sister well enough, but they’d ruined that movie night. I doubted Wayne Manor movie nights ever involved any movies no one had seen before—because everyone talked and yelled at each other too much to actually pay attention to the movie.
Jason put the DVD in the player in my room. “Prepare to be wowed,” he said.
“I’m prepared, trust me,” I replied flatly.
—
“Heeey,” Jason’s voice said softly. “Wake up, doofus.”
I blinked my eyes open blearily. “Wha…?”
He started chuckling. “You fell asleep about halfway through.”
“Duh. It was boring. What did you expect for a casual movie fan from this century watching something from nineteen-thirty-one?”
“Well, all that means is that we get to rewatch it—from the beginning—next week!” Jason declared. I frowned. “Don’t you pout at me. Those have been the official movie night rules since our freshman year of college.”
“That’s not true,” I said, pulling out my phone. I dug deep into the Google Docs on my phone for Movie Night Rules from our freshman year of college. Six years was a long way to scroll through, but eventually I found it. I opened the doc and scanned the rules. “Oh, buzz off,” I muttered, poking Jason in the side.
“No poking!” He lurched away. Jason was selectively ticklish. Sometimes I would poke him in the side and he’d jump, other times he wouldn’t even notice I touched him. And he swapped between the two randomly.
“Why didn’t you wake me up like two minutes after I fell asleep?”
Jason pursed his lips, trying not to smile. “I thought about it. But you looked so cute—” He pinched my cheek and I was reminded of the fact that he had the personality traits of an eighty-year-old grandmother. “—with your hair all messy and your cheeks all squished that I just couldn’t.” He laughed as I batted his hand away from my face. I poked him again. “No poking!”
“Then don’t tease.”
“I have a right to tease you. Look at my shirt! You drooled all over it.”
I grabbed the hem of it and pulled it up. “Let me throw it in the wash, then.”
I expected him to smack my hand away and shove the shirt back down over his torso, but to my surprise, he helped me take it off. I’d seen him shirtless too many times to bother staring at his remarkably muscular torso. I just climbed out of my bed and went to the small closet out in the hall that held my tiny washer and dryer. I threw his shirt in the washer, dumped a bit of detergent in, and got it started before going back to my room.
“Take that off! You’ll stretch it out!” I snapped.
Jason struggled to get one of my—much smaller—T-shirts from college off. I scoffed and helped him yank it over his head before throwing one my pajama shirts at him. I wore my dad’s old T-shirts to sleep in, so it was even big on Jason. “You could have just asked for a replacement and I’d have handed you this.”
“That’s not as fun as surprising you,” he joked.
I rolled my eyes and perched back on the bed. “Fine. Next week, we rewatch Frankenstein. I won’t fall asleep. But you’re bringing snacks again.”
“Of course.”
“And don’t forget the popcorn.”
“Doofus, if I forgot the popcorn, you wouldn’t let me through the door.”
I snickered. “True enough.”
Jason leaned over to set his popcorn bowl on the bedside table closest to him. “Maybe next week we should try this on the couch. I always feel bad about getting popcorn on your sheets—and then you won’t be so comfortable that you fall asleep.”
I grabbed a pillow and whacked him in the chest. His expression turned affronted.
“Did you just initiate a pillow fight?” he demanded.
“No,” I retorted. “I got payback for you insulting me.” I whacked him again. “That was me initiating a pillow fight.” I started flinging the pillow at him again and again.
“Hey! Not fair!” Jason protested. “I’m unarmed!”
I ignored him and kept up my pillow smacking.
He laughed. “Well, if you’re going to play dirty, I will too.” He reached out as my pillow hit him again and he wrangled it from me. “A-ha! Look at that! Got your ammo. How does it feel, to be attacked by your own pillow?”
Jason started smacking me with it. I squealed and blocked him as best I could with my arms. We were both laughing as I tried to reach around him to the pillow he’d been using to brace his back against my headboard. He grabbed my wrist with one hand and hit me with the pillow using the other. “I don’t think so,” he said. “I’m not going easy on you just because you’re adorable.”
I laughed as he nearly hit me hard enough to knock me off the bed.
So, I switched tactics.
Getting inside his much longer reach was the hard part. Once I managed to duck around his arms and wrench my wrist free, I started tickling him. Tonight was a ticklish night. He squirmed away from me.
Jason yowled—and I hoped my neighbors weren’t home—in laughter. “Stop it—stop tickling!”
I didn’t. I ran my wiggling fingers up his sides and across his neck. He tried to catch my hands, but I was quick enough to evade him.
For a few moments anyway.
“No. No!” His protests didn’t work on me. “Oh you’re as bad as my brothers. Stop it—stop it.” His voice went firm, all traces of laughter gone. With one quick movement, the pillow we’d attacked each other with was discarded on the floor. He grabbed my ankles and pulled me so I was lying flat in the center of the bed.
Jason straddled my waist, trapping my lower legs with his ankles and pinning both my hands above my head on the mattress. He was breathing hard. We both were.
He smiled. “There. Not so feisty now, are you? Hands pinned above your head, lying beneath me all… helpless.” He chuckled and licked his lower lip, his smile turning both playful and wicked. “I could have… any kind of revenge I want.” He bent his elbows, lowering himself over me. My breathing grew shorter and blood roared in my ears. “I can have any…” He paused, eyes flicking from mine to where my necklace charm had fallen down one side and landed on the mattress. His eyes widened, as if he seemed to just barely realize how close we were. “This is…” His elbows straightened, pushing him higher above me. “I’m… sorry.” He started to gently pick his way off of me. “I’m gonna let you go now.”
He released his grip on my wrists. I rolled them and flexed my hands to get some feeling back into them.
He swung his leg to get off me and used it to step off the bed. “I should go,” he said breathlessly. “I’m so sorry. I’ll grab my T-shirt next week.” He strode to the door of my bedroom while I sat on the bed, dumbfounded, jaw hanging open.
As he opened the door, I bounded off the bed.
I caught him before he could reach for his stuff on my couch, grabbing his wrist. “What was that about?” I demanded. He refused to turn and look at me.
“Just… let it go,” he said, shaking his head. He tried to pull his wrist out of my hand, but I grabbed it with my other one to hold him in both.
“No! What the hell is going on with you?”
“Leave it alone,” he growled out.
“I can’t! What happened in there that made you shut down? What did I do wrong?”
He whirled. “It’s nothing to do with you. It’s me!”
“Then tell me what it is!” I shouted.
Jason grabbed me by the shoulders, wrenching out of my grip so hard my fingers ached. He spun me around and pinned me by the shoulders against my front door. A muscle worked in his jaw as he clenched it before fixing me with a crystal blue stare. “It’s just… seeing you beneath me—all flushed pink and panting, your eyes hooded and staring up at me… seeing you like that… I just felt myself fall in love with you!”
If he hadn’t pinned me against the door I probably would have fallen over from shock. My mouth definitely fell open. “Jay… I…” I breathed.
Still holding my shoulders, he spun me around so I was away from the front door and moved to shove his jeans into his backpack.
Before he could, I threw reservation to the wind.
I grabbed his shoulders, forced him to turn and face me, moved my hands to the back of his head, and pulled him down to kiss me.
Our mouths crashed together hard enough to make my front teeth ache, but I didn’t care. My heart leapt into my throat and I almost melted as his arms circled my waist, pulling me closer, so our torsos were pressed against each other. My eyelids closed as I sighed. We were both breathing hard, air from our noses warm against each other’s skin. Holding my waist in both arms, he turned and pinned my back against the door again.
“Oh, God…” Jason breathed against my lips. He kissed me again and I moaned. He reached one hand up and tangled it in my hair. He could palm the back of my skull as though it were a basketball. His fingers were warm against my scalp.
When he pulled his lips away from me, I groaned quietly in complaint.
“We—we should not be doing this,” he whispered, shaking his head. The white streak at the front of his hairline flopped back and forth with the movement. I wanted to reach my fingers up and twist that streak between them. But I didn’t.
“Why not?” I replied, just as breathless.
“We’re friends. This isn’t us.”
“You just said that you just barely fell in love with me.”
“I did. But I’m not willing to ruin the good thing we’ve had going on here for six years.” He panted, shoulders heaving up and down, as he reached up and took my hands away from his face, gently dragging them by the wrists. “You’ve been the best friend I’ve been able to keep longer than a year or two. I can’t… I can’t just… this isn’t about what I want.”
“I’m the one who kissed you,” I pointed out. “What does that say about what I want?”
“It’s not just about wants,” he said. “It’s too dangerous.”
“Us being together is dangerous? To whom?”
“To you.”
“Why would it be dangerous for me?” I pushed.
He let me go and spun away from me. He looked like he wanted to shout and rage—maybe throw something—but he just clenched his fists and panted.
When he finally turned back to face me, he’d calmed down a little. “It’s dangerous… because… I… oh, Bruce is gonna kill me…” he whispered, shaking his head again. “Because I… am… the Red Hood.”
Two big confessions in one night. I felt a little dizzy and remembered to breathe.
“Red Hood. As in… the vigilante. And… the crime boss.”
“Vigilante, yes. Crime boss days are behind me. I was newly-back-from-the-dead and not in a stable mindset when I became a crime boss.” I decided not to ask about that. He huffed and sat on my coffee table, instead of the sofa, rubbing his temples. “And I wasn’t going to tell you about it, by the way. You’re the only normal friend I have right now. But it’s too dangerous for us to be together. If any of the rogues in this city knew I had someone I cared about as much as I care about—as much as I love you… you would not survive to the end of the year.”
I crossed from the front door to the sofa and sat on the sofa cushion closest to him, setting my hand on his knee. “Jay, I… I’m willing to risk it. To be with you. We just need to be careful—”
“I’m not willing to lose you. I would have been terrified before tonight if someone worse than me caught you. Knew you were just a friend. Now, though? Now, I don’t know what I’d do if you were captured, and that scares me even more. I saw you under me in that bedroom and I saw a future that was good—for the first time in the nine years since I was resurrected—but I can’t let that be my future. For your sake.”
I bit down on my tongue to keep from shouting. But I did tighten my grip on his knee hard and snap, “Get over yourself, Todd. You’re not the only one who gets to make this decision.”
“No, but apparently I’m the only one who can see things objectively enough to make the wise decision.”
It was my turn to want to throw something. “Jason. Peter. Todd. I don’t care about the danger. And I know you do. But do you know what it’d do to me, knowing that you love me and I feel the same, but you won’t let me be yours? Do you know what it would do to you? I know what it would do to me. It would eat me up inside day in and day out. I would sit here dying for you, waiting for you to come to your senses and carry me back into that bedroom to stay in there all night. But you never would. And I would just wait. I’d never date anyone else. If I tried, all I’d be doing was wishing they were you.
“You and I are cut from the same cloth. Some people are just born to sacrifice. To give up what they want—what they need—for the sake of other people. It’s the only choice we’re ever given, so it’s the choice we make over and over and over again. Sometimes people will split others into Givers and Takers. Those of us born to sacrifice are a step beyond even Givers. We’re the ones who give up everything for others. I’ve done it with my family my entire life. Everyone else always wanted so strongly that my only option was to give up my own. You’re the same, I see it every time I see you with your brothers.
“Jason, it’s time for us to Take. It’s time to let life give us something. This is the moment to be selfish. To put aside Batman and his zealous crusade for one damn moment and let yourself be happy.” I dug my fingernails into his knee through his sweats. “Be selfish for once, Jason.”
He finally looked up at me, eyes meeting mine. “I can’t,” he said.
I clamped my mouth shut and sighed loudly through them. “Yes, you can. If you’re waiting for my consent, you’ve more than got it. I’m telling you now to give yourself consent to want. To take. Get over this hold out that a double life has on you and—mmph!”
He cut me off by slamming his lips against mine, surging off the coffee table and straddling me on the sofa. I moaned and wrapped my arms around his neck. He pulled me to one side, sitting on the sofa and guiding me to straddle himself. His hands were splayed over my shoulder blades. I twisted his white streak through my fingers. Our breath shuddered in and out of our lungs. I parted my lips slightly and ran the tip of my tongue over the seam of his lips.
They opened immediately and let me in. I sighed out my nose. “Please ruin our friendship,” I breathed into his lips. “This is so much better.”
He snickered out his nose, smiling. “Does your consent to let me want you include me carrying you back into that bedroom and neither of us leaving until dawn?” He nodded toward my room.
My body shivered. Not from cold. Excitement. Electricity.
“Definitely,” I said breathlessly.
His hands slid from my shoulder blades and down to my legs. He held them and stood up. I hooked my ankles around his back, locking my arms’ grip around his neck.
He carried me to my room, kicked the door shut, and laid me gently on the messed-up bedsheets and disarrayed pillows. On all fours above me, my legs around his waist, he kissed me. Gently, at first, but he quickly grew hungry. His hands worked their way under my shirt, callused palms scraping slightly against my skin.
“Still okay with this?” His voice was barely more than a hoarse whisper.
“Oh yeah,” I breathed, unable to even speak loud enough to be heard from inches away.
He smiled. Wicked delight flickering on his face. “Well, get ready for me to call you mine. Because I am all yours.”
I smiled. “I’m yours, Jason.”

Kiro: Summer camp, the whole class together…. I really want to go.
MC: I also want to go…. Sketching in the village at the foot of the mountain to escape the summer heat sounds very pleasant.
The director who came to participate in the pre-launch preparations of the film just stepped into the conference room and undoubtedly overheard our conversation.
Director: Do you mean the class that you re-lived high school with before?
MC: Well, Teacher Huang was the headteacher at the time, and we were just discussing their summer camp.
Director: Summer camp? It sounds too student-like.
Director: Anyway, there is still a while before that happens, so go if you want and take advantage of the time off to rest as soon as possible. And….
She thought about it for a moment and then gave us a smile.
Director: If this summer camp experience can be filmed, it will be good promotional material after the movie airs.
I met Kiro’s eyes and have already made a decision.
Kiro: Let me ask Teacher Huang first if we can participate.
Kiro fiddled with his phone, typing and sending messages. I didn’t know how long he was going to be typing for so I leaned in to take a look….
It takes up more than a dozen lines of the text box.
After a while, Teacher Huang sent a voice message.
Teacher Huang: Of course, you’re very welcome to join us. Although you and MC spent only a short amount of time with us, you are still members of the class.
Teacher Huang: I will send you a registration form in a moment, you just have to fill it out and give it to me. The students would be very happy if they heard the news.
Kiro looked at me with a “yeah”, sent a thank-you reply, and when he raised his head again, he had a bright smile on his face.
On the day of departure, Kiro and I arrived at the designated place early to wait for the bus to arrive. *Changed some wording*
The departure time was set at 7 o’clock in the morning, but even still with it being midsummer, the sun was so fierce that people couldn’t open their eyes.
As I looked at the road, I put my hand on my forehead to block the sun. Kiro opened up his suitcase and put his fisherman’s hat on top of my head.
I turned my head and was about to talk to him when a blue and white bus had approached us and was slowing down.
Kiro greeted him as soon as he saw the bus number!
Kiro: 8516, it’s this one!
When the bus stopped, he immediately took my suitcase and walked to the outside of the bus, put both suitcases into the storage, and stepped onto the bus.
Kiro: S-urprise!
The students inside saw us getting on the bus, and at first, there was no reaction, and then burst into applause and cheers-- *Changed some wording*
Classmates: Kiro!
Classmates: Oh my God, are you coming?!
Kiro: Hey, long time no see~ Happy summer everyone~
Kiro: Teacher Huang said that this summer camp is a group activity that the whole class must participate in, and I can’t be absent of course.
Mr. Huang, who was sitting at the front, stood up and dragged Kiro and me onto the bus.
Teacher Huang: Kiro and MC, find a place to sit down and fasten your seatbelts.
Teacher Huang: Okay students, now the whole class is here. I announce the official opening of the 3rd summer camp. *I think it was supposed to be “3rd” but I’m not entirely sure*
[Stage 2]
The itinerary of the summer camp is quite packed.
Occasionally, we would go up the mountain to sketch and take pictures with our classmates. We would also occasionally go to town to shoot some material for the film advertisements.
By the third day, Kiro and I had collected a whole 5G’s worth of vlog material. Kiro was very satisfied with the results of this trip.
Kiro: After the fifteen-day summer camp is over, maybe I can go back to sort out the material and edit. *Changed some wording*
Kiro: By the way, are there any arrangements for the afternoon, or are we going up the mountain with them?
Kiro and I were talking and walking to the door of the homestay. We ran into a few classmates, who we were closer to, sitting in the corner and whispering amongst each other. *Changed some wording*
Kiro glanced at me and leaned forward curiously.
Kiro: What cake? Are you talking about who has a birthday?
Classmate A: Hush! I’m staying in the same room with Shu Shu, and I happened to see her birthday when I checked it, which is today.
Classmate A: And it’s her eighteenth birthday this year, which is very important. We just want to give her a simple celebration.
Classmate B: We just took a look and there isn’t a store that delivers. So, we want to take a taxi into town and order the cake there.
MC: ….But if you leave now, you will definitely be late. Teacher Huang also arranged for the seniors in the village to tell you about folk tales.
Kiro took on this task, almost without thinking.
Kiro: It’s okay, the two of us can go buy cakes.
Kiro: We visited the town a couple of days ago so we’re familiar with the route. Just leave it to us, you can go to class with peace of mind.
I also nodded and quickly agreed.
MC: We can also buy some decorative ribbons and balloons so that it will have a somewhat celebratory atmosphere.
Before they could say anything, we waved to them.
MC: Leave it to us~ Let’s keep in touch and call me if you need anything!
(At the Cake Shop)
Shopkeeper: Our cake bases are all freshly made so you two will have to wait a while.
Shopkeeper: The cake you order is relatively big. In addition to writing “Happy Birthday” on it, you can also write 1-2 blessings.
As the shopkeeper said this, he took out a pen and paper and gave it to us.
Shopkeeper: Write the blessing on the paper and then I’ll take it to the pastry chef.
Kiro: Okay~ Let’s think about it first.
Kiro took the pen and paper and sat down with me in the corner of the cake shop by the window.
Kiro: What would be the best blessing to write to an eighteen-year-old birthday star….
MC: It’s a bit difficult, so let’s change our mindset. What did you want most when you were eighteen?
Kiro put the pen cap on his forehead and thought about it for a while.
Kiro: I didn’t think too much about what I wanted “most”. There were already a lot of things going on at the time, and there was no time to stop and think about it.
Kiro: What about you, what did you want when you were eighteen?
MC: I didn’t really have anything specific either, it’s just that there is a feeling that it’s important to get through each day one by one.
MC: Hope that from this day on, life will change something. I hope that from this day on, nothing will change in my life. *Changed some wording*
Kiro: That’s it.
Kiro looked at the crowd coming and going outside the window. After a while, he took off the pen cap and seemed to have an idea.
[Stage 3]
That night, when they came back from the mountain, Kiro and I had already decorated the living room with balloons and flowers.
The owner of the hotel kindly gave us several large boxes of Coke. The red cans filled the long table and made up the words “Happy Birthday”.
Shu Shu’s eyes were covered by someone from behind as she was led step by step.
When everyone arrived, the student who was covering her eyes, released his hand. She opened her eyes bit by bit and saw the lively surprise in front of her.
She was at a loss for a while as she covered her eyes in surprise and laughed twice, her eyes welled up as if she was holding back tears.
Shu Shu: Haha I knew it!
Shu Shu: Damn, you secretly planned a surprise birthday party…. Originally, I didn’t say anything because I didn’t want to cause you trouble.
Kiro took out the cake from the refrigerator and put it on the table carefully.
Kiro: The eighteenth birthday is very important, so it should be celebrated!
I drew two tissues from the tissue box on the table and wiped her tears.
MC: The birthday star can’t shed tears today, wipe them quickly and prepare to blow out the candles to make a wish.
When Shu Shu took the tissue, she smiled at me with tears in her eyes and took my hand. *Changed some wording*
Shu Shu: I’m overwhelmed with emotions right now. *Changed some wording*
Shu Shu: I actually didn’t plan to celebrate my eighteenth birthday. Growing up is a very important thing. Am I not ready yet?....
Shu Shu: Say it out, don’t laugh at me. *Changed some wording*
I couldn’t help touching her head and using the remaining tissue in my hand to wipe off the two teardrops on her face.
MC: You don’t have to think so seriously….
I winked at Kiro, and he quickly leaned over, putting on a brilliant smile to comfort Shu Shu.
Kiro: It doesn’t matter, it’s normal to have such thoughts.
Kiro: I have had similar thoughts before. I think it must be very hard to grow up. It is necessary to face all kinds of challenges in this world alone….
Kiro: No longer can I be carefree like a child.
Shu Shu was obviously touched by Kiro’s words. She nodded to Kiro with affirmation in her eyes, waiting for him to continue.
Kiro: But actually, did you know that growing up is more fun than being a child?
The dozen or so pairs of eyes in the living room were all looking at Kiro. It seemed that they were all confused, but they didn’t say the same as Shu Shu.
They all seemed to want to hear the answer to the question from Kiro’s mouth.
Kiro: No matter how carefree life was when I was young, I always lived within the limits of freedom given by adults.
Kiro: Only when we take that step into adulthood, the door to exploring the world is officially opened to us. The most intuitive is the freedom to control time and money.
Kiro: You can book plane tickets at any time for an impromptu trip, and you can lie down on a comfortable bed for a whole day.
Kiro: You can earn money to buy things you like, and fill the refrigerator with your favourite drinks and snacks.
While talking, Kiro and I looked at each other.
Kiro: You can also confess openly to the person you like, and walk openly while holding hands on the street.
I nodded my head, knowingly. Instead, he patted Shu Shu on the shoulder and continued to encourage her with a smile.
Kiro: So don’t worry, if you blow out the eighteenth birthday candle, you won’t become a boring adult in an instant.
Kiro: Look at me, I have liked playing music and games since I was a child. Even now, I still play music and games in the same way.
Kiro: Believe me, you can freely choose your lifestyle and like it too.
[Stage 4]
Seeing the thoughtful expressions of my classmates, I couldn’t help but blend into the atmosphere.
MC: Do you have plans for what you want to do in adulthood?
MC: When I was a child, I always thought that I must go to an idol concert after work and buy tickets for the first row.
There was a burst of laughter from all around, and the students chimed in one by one.
Classmate A: I just want to have the freedom to drink milk tea. My mother said that milk tea is junk food and never allows me to drink it. I want to drink milk tea in my dreams. *This kid’s a big mood lol*
Classmate B: I want to own a cat. My parents don’t like pets, especially my mother, who dislikes cats that shed hair. I said I would clean up after them myself, but she still refuses.
Classmate B: Once I start working, I will move out and adopt a stray cat.
Classmate C: My parents are very supportive of me. They agree on whatever I want, so I want to be independent early on, find a better job, and earn money to be filial to them.
They talked enthusiastically, drawing up a blueprint to be fulfilled in the future.
In the middle of the conversations, the stars in the mountains are all bright, vying to flash the most dazzling light in the Milky Way.
I quietly approached Kiro and sighed softly.
MC: Eighteen is a very beautiful age.
MC: It’s great to have hopes and dreams in my heart.
Kiro smiled at me with his arms folded and his head tilted happily.
Kiro: What are you talking about, MC? Every age is like this, and the age with hopes and dreams is not only eighteen.
I accepted his smile knowingly, opened the cake box with him, and put Shu Shu’s birthday candles on top.
Kiro: Come on, let’s get back to the task at hand. Turn off the lights--
As I lighted the candles, the classmates also stopped talking and sang a happy birthday song in unison.
Classmates: Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you….
MC: Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you~
Kiro: Come and make a wish.
Shu Shu was pushed to the front by everyone, there were tears in her eyes and an uncontrollable smile, her hands were folded to her chest.
Shu Shu: Shall we make a wish together?
This proposal was approved by everyone, Kiro and I were also pushed towards the cake.
The light of the candles flickered in the darkness, reflected in everyone’s eyes, and then slowly, they closed their eyes one after another.
I secretly looked at Kiro, and under the dim light, he opened his eyes and stared seriously at every face present.
Perhaps the subject of “youth” and “growth” has a new meaning in his mind.
After some exploration, it will become his superb performance in the movie.
Kiro: Shu Shu, can you blow the candles?
Kiro asked softly, his eyes fell on a line of blessings on the cake-- Listen to the inner voice and move forward freely.
[Stage 5]
The night before we left the town, Kiro took me to take a walk outside as a final farewell to this summer camp.
Involuntarily, we talked about the confusion of the students about “growth”.
Kiro: In fact, growing up is not terrible, but the journey of facing the unknown is terrifying.
Kiro: When I first made a movie, I was also very nervous. Everyone on the set seemed to be very experienced and skilled. Only I was a novice.
Kiro: I often couldn’t sleep in the middle of the night, and I kept thinking about what to do the next day in my head-- not deliberately, but uncontrollable.
Kiro: Every time that I feel I can’t do it, I just bite the bullet and move forward.
He raised his head, letting the evening breeze in the mountains ruffle his bangs, his eyes looking towards the night were clearer than the blue in the sky.
Kiro: Haha, if you tell the kids this kind of thing, they might feel more scared.
Kiro: But the process is not scary at all.
Kiro: When I look back, I will only find it difficult, but it’s nothing.
He said, turning his head to see the road we have travelled.
Kiro: As it is now, I walked a long way without knowing it.
My heart was filled with the tranquillity of the night, I breathed in the fresh air and stretched out my arms.
MC: And-- There are always beautiful scenes along the road, which makes people forget the tediousness of going forward.
I lowered my eyes and looked at him with a chuckle.
MC: Maybe there will be a very interesting person who can walk with him.
I stopped and stretched out my hand to hold Kiro’s sleeve.
MC: I’ve been thinking these two days, there really isn’t a single moment when we will suddenly change from children to adults….
MC: Like me, I often forget that I am already an adult, and people around me often complain about me, just like a small child.
MC: Maybe it’s because someone has been tolerating me….
MC: No matter what wild ideas I have, he will agree with me, understand me, and support me unconditionally.
MC: Surrounded by this kind of love, I may never be able to become an adult.
Kiro was taken aback and then curled the corners of his mouth, smiling gently at me in the quiet summer night.
Kiro: Who said so? *This line came out kinda wonky so I hope this is right*
Kiro: I have the people who support me the most, understand me the best, and tolerate me in every possible way, making me feel that I can do whatever I want.
Kiro: Often more capricious than children, and often makes me feel lucky.
Kiro: --The world of an adult is wonderful, and the world of a child is very happy.
He stepped forward and I saw the stars, the moon, and the mountains reflected in his eyes as well as myself in between.
Kiro: And I can have two worlds at the same time.

Felix’s POV:
We have been traveling for over a year now, Demetri tracking Carlisle and us following behind him. Demetri located him across the Atlantic, so we swam across the ocean to reach him. Almost a year and a half after leaving Volterra, we tracked Carlisle while he was working as a doctor somewhere in the northern United States. He was surprised to see us, but we kept our austere facade to maintain our sovereignty towards him. He welcomed us gladly in his small house.
It was a two-story building, and it smelled of old wood and mold, but I guess that was the best he could do for now. The living conditions around here did not seem to be ideal. Apart from the Volturi and the Egyptian coven, no other vampire lived comfortably, in castles, mansions, or even big houses; most vampires were nomads, traveling around and living by hunting whenever they could. So, Carlisle actually living in a house, even if it looked like this, was way better than living the nomad life.
“Jane, Alec, Demetri, Felix. To what do I owe this pleasure? Can I offer you anything?” Carlisle had always been one of the kindest of our kind, too compassionate for a vampire.
“No, Carlisle, thank you, we’re good. We are on a mission, and we have a few questions for you.” Jane took it up to herself to start the conversation.
“Please, sit down so we can talk.” Carlisle offered us to sit around the table that was in the middle of the ground floor. We each took a seat at the table. “So, may I ask what it is all about? I don’t think I have personally acted in a way to upset the Volturi.”
“No, indirectly, you haven’t.” Jane continued. “We wanted to ask you a few questions regarding (Y/N). We think that you may have heard by now that she has left Volterra.”
“Yes, word came around. I met a few nomads from Europe some time ago, and they told me that (Y/N) left Volterra, probably permanently.”
I tried to suppress a sob that was fighting to leave my throat. Carlisle knew that (Y/N) left, everyone knew that (Y/N) left. They didn’t know she left her mate behind, and they shall never find out that she was my mate. I didn’t even want to think about the possibility of (Y/N) being in danger if anyone found out that we were mates. I had too many targets on my back to risk anything happening to her.
It was my turn to intervene. “Have you seen her? Has she ever come around here?”
Carlisle turned to face me. “I did. Once. She stayed with me for about a year; that was about 6 or 7 years ago. She tracked me through her memories. She has become quite skilled at that.” Demetri and I looked at each other confused. (Y/N) could track as skillfully as Demetri now?
Carlisle continued. “Anyway, she seemed concerned. She told me she had been traveling for quite some time, but she felt like she was missing a piece of herself, of her past. For a few months, she wanted to learn more about me, my job, how I was doing with the whole “animal blood” diet, simple curiosity really. She had been training herself to abstain from human blood, so it was easier for her to go hunt with me. She told me..”
Carlisle turned to look at me now. “She told me about your bond, Felix.” So, she has felt our bond, too! “She told me that she was scared for you, for your safety within the Volturi. She was worried about all of you, but particularly you, Felix. Being her mate means you are basically a target for anyone who wishes to harm (Y/N). She told me she ran away to protect you. As long as no one knew of your bond, you were safe. The traveling and meeting the world was just an extra benefit for her and her gift.”
“Her gift?!” We all exclaimed in unison. (Y/N) never claimed a “gift”, so how could this be possible? Did she lie? Did she even know about her gift?
“Before you say anything, she didn’t even know what her gift was. It is way more complicated than you think. I guess she’d appreciate it if I gave you an idea about it.” Carlisle paused for a few moments. If my heart was beating, I swear it would have stopped by now.
“You know how, for example, Jane, you can induce mental pain, or you, Alec, can restrict anyone’s senses?” The Twins nodded at Carlisle. “Well, (Y/N) can do both, and so much more.” We were kind of shocked. No one has ever had a gift similar to the Twins; that’s why they were in the Volturi. Because they were unique.
“(Y/N)’s gift is copying others’ gifts. That’s why she could also track me; she had copied Demetri’s gift.” Carlisle pointed at Demetri, who looked utterly shocked now.
I would lie if I said I didn’t feel the same way or scared even. I was not scared because of (Y/N); I was scared for (Y/N). This newly-found discovery meant she would be way more important to Aro than we ever thought. He wouldn’t just let her go - not that this was his intention before, but now, she would be even more precious to him and his cause; she would now be the perfect weapon for him to use against other vampires. I had to find her and warn her.
“Do you know where she is now?” My voice came out more stern than I intended it to be.
Carlisle nodded his head slightly. “I may know where she is now. Before she left, she was trying to find out as much as she could about her parents. I assume that was the missing piece” she was referring to? Anyway, she may be after her parents. I mean they do know her nature better than any of us does. Don’t forget that (Y/N) is half-witch. No one could ever teach her how to be one; only her father could be the one to do so. So, if I stand corrected, she is looking for them. And there’s only one place that (Y/N) has ever linked to her parents.”
“Greece.” Demetri stepped in. Demetri was the only one who could understand (Y/N)’s connection with Greece; it was their birthplace, their origin, their true home.
“Exactly. If you find her parents, you’ll most likely find her. Even if she’s not with them, it will be easier to track her if you have her parents’ assistance.”
We nodded and we stood up. “Thank you for your help, Carlisle. You were most helpful.” Jane spoke for all of us.
“It was my pleasure.” Carlisle led us to the door, but before we left, Jane turned to him one last time. “We think we can trust you that this conversation stays between us.”
“Of course, Jane. Have a safe trip and take care of yourselves.”
“You too.” Alec smiled at Carlisle.
What Carlisle said at the end had me worried for (Y/N). “I hope you find her soon. Her parents never had the best reputation around.” What kind of people was (Y/N)’s family anyway?
----------------------------------------------------------
Tracking (Y/N) proved to be way more complicated and debilitating than we thought it would be. We assumed that the closer we were to Greece, the easier it would be for Demetri to pick up her tenor. We were wrong; we were going around blindly, not a clue about (Y/N)’s whereabouts. Even when we finally set our feet on Greek ground, we still didn’t know where to start looking for her. Nobody had a clue where she could be; we didn’t even know her birthplace.
Demetri took it upon him to start his research in a place he knew well enough: Athens. Athens was the capital of Greece’s civilization for many centuries, but, at the time of Demetri’s birth, during the Byzantine times, Constantinople emerged as the center of the Eastern Byzantine Empire, while Rome remained the center of the Western Byzantine Empire.
Athens was not regarded as highly as it used to, during Pericles’ “Golden Century”, as the 5th century BC was known. It still was an important and historical city, but it has lost its title as the “capital” eons ago. The city was taken advantage of by both “allies” and Ottomans and seemed to have lost part of its previous glory. Still, it was beautiful; I may have been quite “old” myself, but I could still admire the history around me.
It reminded of (Y/N)’s stories and books; knowing Ancient Greek history was one of the first things she took an interest in. The fact that she was able to travel to Athens, with or without Aro, quite a few times also developed her fascination regarding the Ancient Greek arts, philosophy, and overall way of living. Of course, it wasn’t easy being a woman then, or ever really, but she was more financially privileged than the average Athenian - vampire wealth had always been an actual thing, and Aro always prided himself to be a “collector” of wealth (and talented vampires for the matter).
We arrived in Greece at a transitional stage; the country has been experiencing a war against the Ottomans for a few years now, and it was evident around the city of Athens. There were many casualties during the war, many damages around the streets, the houses, and there seemed to be a climate of misery and decline.
Yet, the country had recently elected a prime minister, who declared Nafplio, a city in Peloponnese, as Greece’s capital. That was our next stop, as we couldn’t find anything in particular that could indicate (Y/N) being in Athens. Apart from the poor living conditions, the country was experiencing a plague pandemic wave, which killed even more people, but authorities worked hard on containing the cases, and it seemed to have been working.
Still, without a single clue about (Y/N)’s location, the only thing we could do is go around searching for any possible information. We could only travel at night, and hide during the day; Greece, just like Italy, had always been blessed with sunny days, for the majority of a calendar year.
It wasn’t ideal with us being vampires, but Volterra was an ideal strategic location for the Volturi to travel across the vampire and human world, rule, and impose their laws whenever it was needed. Just like always, we now also had to be secretive about our existence.
I thought about how lucky (Y/N) was in that situation; being a non-fully vampire, she didn’t “glow” in the sun like us. She had a more healthy-skin-like glow, a healthy and subtle glow that made me even more attracted to her - if that was even possible. That basically meant that she could technically go anywhere and everywhere; the weather did not affect her, the sun did not affect her.
I started getting frustrated and disappointed. It wasn’t only (Y/N) I had in my mind; apparently, during the years of the Greek Revolution, many vampires, Greek or non-Greek, started secretly fighting to claim territories for themselves.
We knew that it wasn’t part of our duty, but it wouldn’t hurt if we could actually claim Greek land for the Volturi. Having both Italy and Greece under our control could mean more power, more resources, more blood. It only seemed natural; the three Volturi kings were born in Greece, all three of their wives were born in Greece, Demetri and Chelsea were born in Greece. (Y/N) was born in Greece.
Greece could easily become an extension of our territory - Italy was already ours in its entirety - and it would only be the start. It would be easier to control and deal with any possible riots from other covens - the Egyptians and the Romanians in particular. We didn’t fear either of them, but the Romanians have been holding resentment towards the Volturi for a couple thousand years, so anything could be expected from their side at any moment.
I shared my thoughts with the Twins and Demetri. They all agreed that it was a plausible plan; it would show others that the Volturi are still as powerful as they have ever been, and should be feared. Besides, we knew that just the four of us would be able to subjugate any vampire that crossed our paths. With the Twins’ powers, Demetri’s tracking skills, and my strength, it would be impossible for others to resist or challenge us.
We started interrogating any vampire we found wandering or hunting at night; none of them worthy enough to fight us or even gifted enough to join the Volturi. It was quite easy to find the leaders of these “newly-made” covens, or alliances, as they seemed. Because none of them inspired loyalty to each other; none of them was a coven in the sense the Volturi were. They were more like vampires who came together to fight for territory control; I doubt if they would even manage to stay together for one more day. They did not only lack loyalty towards their "leaders", but also discipline, principles, and basic rules of survival and solidarity towards the other members.
It was quite easy to take over any “coven” in Southern Greece, including the island of Crete. We started moving north, taking over the territories of Thessaly and Epirus, something which the Greek humans did not manage to acquire from the Ottomans yet. We were to take over Macedonia and Thrace next, but we were met with an unexpected obstacle.
Every vampire we would interrogate regarding these two territories would say the same thing: none of them knew who owned them, but whoever tried to claim the territories never returned back, dead or alive. The mystery that surrounded the person or people behind the leadership of these areas made their skin crawl; they all refused to “help” us any further, no matter how much Jane, Alec, and I tried, which made me kind of worried, or more like curious, but I didn’t want to show any weakness or let them question my effectiveness.
Every one of them was just a “normal” vampire; we were better, stronger, gifted, and we have proved that we can bring results every single time. No other vampire has ever dared go against us; we wouldn’t allow them to question us now either.
We continued traveling up north, determined to face whoever it was behind the territories there. I didn’t pay attention to the slight pain in my guts as we were traveling through the country, but it was becoming more and more intense as we continued going north.
We didn’t know how we would find the vampires behind this “operation”, so our plan would be to act in any way possible to provoke them into coming out of their “hiding spot”. For a few days, we were rummaging any small village we could find, killing the villagers and draining them of their blood - not a very “Volturi tactic" may I say. We were supposed to hide our existence, not challenge our luck by killing so many people; yet, this was the only way we thought that could possibly lurk the vampires out of their “comfort zone”.
As we were traveling through Macedonia, we came across a rather developed town, compared to the villages we have seen before. The city was surrounded by tall stone walls. There were a few rivers on its western side, forests and mountains on its northeastern side, and swamps and marshes on its southern side. We couldn’t hunt freely here, at least not during daylight; there was no way we would go unnoticed if we started hunting anywhere in the area. We decided to run through the forests, see if there was a place we could stay for a while; if there was a human or more we could feed off of; if there was a sign of the vampires or (Y/N).
During the last few weeks, I’ve been thinking that our mission has been more about expanding our power and influence, and not as much about locating (Y/N). Actually, it felt more like locating (Y/N) was more of an afterthought now. We lost the purpose of our mission; the reason we came together all along.
It wasn’t as if we would actually be directly benefiting by the territories we claimed; we were still working on behalf of the Volturi. We didn’t ask the kings to claim Greek territories; yet, we did, because we felt obliged to consider their own good once again, this time at the expense of finding (Y/N). Once again, we became the victims of the influence they had on us, and we played their game.
“Why are we even doing this?” I yelled frustratedly. My friends turned to look at me.
“What do you mean, Felix?” Jane seemed slightly annoyed. “We’ve come here to claim the territories, to show these savages who the boss is here.”
“No, Jane, they are not savages, we didn’t come here to claim territories, and we don’t have to show them “who is the boss”. They already know that the Volturi rule the vampire world. No. No. We came here to search for (Y/N). Not to “claim territories”. Not to “show them”. We came here for (Y/N). We..We lost our purpose. We lost the true meaning of our mission. We just started claiming the land for the Volturi, for Aro. We..We forgot about her.”
My eyes were stinking with venom. I felt weak, I felt as if I betrayed her. I promised to myself that I would bring her back home, that I would protect her. It’s been so long and we still haven’t found her. We just kept wasting time on things that shouldn’t matter to us. We should not care about expanding our influence, our territory, our power. We should care about bringing the Princess back.
Jane lowered her head apologetically. “I’m sorry, Felix. I didn’t know you felt this way. I have to admit it though; we did lose track of time and we forgot about the actual purpose of this mission. We once again forgot that (Y/N) has always been way more important than any power in the world. I’m sorry. We all are. I promised you we’ll start searching for her right away, okay?”
I nodded affirmatively. We had to find (Y/N) as soon as possible. We were not only running out of time but also out of hope that (Y/N) was in Greece or anywhere else, that she was alive. We got so distracted by our conversation that we didn’t notice we were being watched until we all started screaming in pain. I fell on my knees, the pain on the back of my head unbearable, and that’s when I blacked out.
----------------------------------------------------------
I didn’t know how much time passed being unconscious. It felt like a new sensation to me; being a bit over 2000 years old, I haven’t lost my senses once - except for the times Alec liked to play games on me. I didn’t feel like myself; it didn’t feel right. I didn’t like being restricted of my senses, especially now, especially here, in an unknown place. My mind was blurry and I couldn’t see anything distinct around me; I couldn’t see almost anything. I tried to move my hands around but I couldn’t as if the tightest rope in the world was holding me in place.
“No need to fight, sweetheart.” I heard a woman’s voice. “There is no way to escape.”
“Who are you? Why am I here? Where are the others?”
“Felix? Is that you?” I heard Demetri’s voice on my right.
“Demetri? Is that you? Where are Jane and Alec?”
“I am here.” I heard Alec’s voice on my left.
“Me too." Jane replied.
“Alexandre, please, I cannot start with this again.”
Suddenly, I could see again. I was still physically restricted, but my eyes could see them crystal clear and my mind was in order once again. The woman in front of me was very imposing, though of average size. Her long, curly hair framed her face beautifully and her piercing red eyes were piercing through my soul. The man standing next to her was only a few centimeters taller; he had short, straight hair, and his eyes were looking between the four of us sternly. Who were they even? Why were we even here? Why us? As if she read my mind, a woman spoke to me.
“Oh, deary. We’re not going to tell you who we are. But you are going to tell us what you, Volturi guards, are doing in our territory!”
“How do you know who we are?” I exclaimed. Of course, everyone knew the Volturi as the authority of the vampire world, but not all vampires around here have ever met us specifically, or any other member of the coven for the matter.
“Your crest, dear. I have known that crest for far too long. Way before you were even born. I see that dear Aro never changed it. He does like to remain in his same, old ways after all. Never changing, never moving forward, still imposing his “laws”, I’m assuming?” The woman seemed to know way far about the Volturi and Aro. She became a danger for our coven, from the moment she and the man abducted us. She should have never done that; they both would be punished for their actions.
“Dear, I won’t get punished..for anything. You, on the other hand, are in a pretty difficult situation. You see, my husband and I are not going to let you get away until you tell us why you are here.”
“Pain.” I heard Jane saying. The woman turned to look at her but she didn’t even flinch. I heard Jane screaming in return.
“Oh, sweetheart. Your powers won’t work on either of us. You see, I am a shield, so don’t even try to hurt us. On the contrary, WE can hurt you just as much, if not more.” The woman smiled evilly, while Jane was writhing in pain.
“Please, stop hurting my sister.” Alec pleaded, unable to use his gift against the couple.
“So, you are the “Terror Twins”. Alec and Jane, I see.” The woman knew their nickname? “Oh, yes, I do, dear.” She turned to look at me. “You see, I was once part of the Volturi. Technically, still am. However, I left, way before any of you joined the coven. To put it into perspective, I was there when Didyme lived but I left way before she was killed. Dear Marcus has never been the same ever since. I still feel somewhat of a connection to the coven, though I am able to make my own decisions because I managed to escape them. We were actually passing by Volterra a few times. I wonder how you never noticed us, though our powers would practically make us mentally invisible from Demetri, over here, or any other vampire, really.”
She knew Demetri, too?
“Felix, dear, I know all of you and about you. You see, my dear daughter has a special connection with all of you, a kind of friendship neither my husband, nor I quite understand. It wasn’t easy for her to keep her memories secret; though she is an amazing shield - which makes me so proud, she is kind of “vulnerable” when she is sleeping. And my husband’s magic is quite strong and easy to penetrate her mind and memories when she does eventually sleep.”
Her daughter? Could that be…?
“WHERE IS SHE?” The question slipped out of my mouth without even thinking about it first.
My anger could not be controlled right now. I was pushing myself to my limits to break my fetters, to no avail. Were that woman and that man (Y/N)’s parents? I started making some connections here and there; they looked similar to (Y/N), though so different at the same time. Their immortality, their red eyes, their confidence, and their aggression did not remind me of (Y/N). She had a pure face, a face of kindness, she was not like them.
“You think so? Alexandre, can you please call (Y/N), agapi mou?” The woman turned to the man, and the man started moving his fingers in front of him, creating some sort of a wave around him.
Within a few seconds, the door burst open and the first thing I saw was a red silky fabric flowing around the air. When the fabric settled down slowly, I saw her for the first time after so long. She has changed..a lot. Her (Y/E/C) eyes were replaced by piercing red ones, with a slight hint of (Y/E/C) around the pupils. Her eyes apathetic and stern; her facial features more defined; her hair reached a little below her shoulders, straight and shiny, like her father’s. She still looked as beautiful as ever.
She stared at us, focusing her eyes mostly on me. Her heartbeat sounded steady and strong. I was relieved; she was still human, they had not turned her fully vampire yet. She took a few steps farther into the house, her feet bare but surprisingly clean, no dirt, no grass had stained them. She stood right beside the woman, who I now knew was her mother and Aro’s daughter.
“What are they doing here?” Her voice came out stern, yet it was music to my ears.
I missed her voice so much. I missed her so much. Our mate bond, weakened by the distance and time spent apart, slowly started forming again. I felt it; I felt my existence becoming meaningful again. I felt my breath hitching in my throat, her presence provoking so many different feelings and emotions inside me. However, she still seemed cold and distant, and I couldn’t quite read her face. Did she not feel the same? Has she forgotten me? Does she hate me now?
I saw her gaze getting softer, even compassionate? She approached me and bent down slightly, placing her left hand carefully on my right cheek. She stared deeply into my eyes and I closed mine, leaning on her touch. It was the purest moment I have experienced in my 2000 years of life.
I opened my eyes and stared at her. I saw golden flakes scattered in between the red in her eyes. Once again, she took my breath away. It felt as if I fell in love with her all over again, a unique feeling of refreshment. We were lost in our own little world. She smiled slightly at me, the first time she did after such a long time.
“Enough! (Y/N) get away from him, now!” (Y/N) was forcefully removed away from me by her mother. She was looking at me pleadingly and then turned to look at her parents with such hatred. I’ve never seen her like this ever again, not even with Aro.
“YOU. WILL. NOT. TELL. ME. WHAT. TO. DO!” If looks could kill, (Y/N)’s parents would be dead by now. Her hands started lighting up, bright purple flames rising up. She was trying to intimidate her parents, but neither of them looked concerned in the slightest. She turned to us and with a dance-like move of her hand, we were finally freed of our fetters.
It was her father’s turn to speak. “(Y/N), let’s take this outside.” With a jerking motion of his hand, we all found ourselves, outside, in their house’s front yard.
“They’ve come to take you back to Volterra, back to Aro! Don’t you see it? They don’t care about you! They just want to please their master.” The words came bitter out of her mouth. She had a clear resentment towards the Volturi. “I will not let them take you away from me! Not again!”
“I know, mother, I’ve read their minds, too. Yet, I don’t see why YOU seem to think that you can make the decisions for me. I am my own self. I can make decisions for myself. And I get to choose what I do with my life.” (Y/N)’s voice was certain, powerful, in control. “They are not bad people, mother. They just have to follow orders, just like you followed Aro’s orders, just like I followed yours. That’s not going to happen anymore. I am taking control of my life!”
The sweet, little girl I got to see my whole life was becoming a strong, powerful woman right in front of my eyes. She was radiating power; she was taking control of her life. She was..my everything. She was becoming independent, her own self. To say I was proud of her, would be an understatement. She has always been special, but this newly-found power has clearly given her way more confidence and trust in herself.
She would finally be able to rule the Volturi. If she decided to come back to Volterra, she could definitely take over the coven. No one would be able to resist her or her gift. My thoughts were quickly interrupted when her dad started shouting in Greek.
Demetri, who was standing right next to me, saw the look of total confusion in my eyes. “I’ll translate for you.” I nodded at him. “So, her father says: Enough with this nonsense, (Y/N). Your place is here, with us. You owe us; we taught you what you needed to know about your magic. We taught you how to use it, how to develop it. You didn’t know enough to defend yourself back then.”
“Now, (Y/N) says: I don’t owe you anything. Yes, you did teach me how to use my magic, which I inherited from you. But, you gave me away to Aro. You couldn’t defend me or yourselves against him. You just offered me to him, as if I was a present for his birthday or something.”
“Now, her mother says: You, at least, owe it to yourself to get away from these tyrants. You know they don’t deserve you, so why are you still defending him? It’s that man, isn’t it? Now, (Y/N) says: That man has a name. Now, her mom says: You know, his name means “lucky”, "happy" in Greek. Yet, he hasn’t been that lucky or happy at all, has he? We read his mind, (Y/N), he’s not worthy of you.”
“Now, (Y/N) says: Guess what? I have also read his mind, and I have also read the two of you, as well. Don’t you think that it is only you who can read my mind while I’m sleeping! I’ve been reading your minds any chance I get! I know how you’ve been planning to use me, as a weapon against the Volturi! Guess again! I’m not going to let you manipulate me anymore! And that man deserves EVERYTHING in this world!”
“ENOUGH!” Her father shouted and threw a dark red glowing sphere, hitting (Y/N) and knocking her on the ground. My heart dropped at the sight, but she quickly stood up and gathered so much energy in her own hands, attacking her father with a powerful hit.
He got wounded, his face slightly cracked from his forehead to his jaw, yet he didn’t give up. He was about to attack her once again when his wife stopped him. She was looking at me and nodded to her husband. I heard (Y/N) screaming, but I didn’t make out what she was saying, as I started screaming myself and felt myself getting tossed in the air. Then, everything went black once again.

(tw: su!c!de) hello! I’m very sorry if this makes you uncomfortable and if it does please ignore my request, but i was hoping you could write for any/all slender bros finding out their s/o attempted by them celebrating a couple years clean? 💕 :)
ABSOLUTELY! This is my first request so I hope you enjoy! And a note to everyone, I’m sort of trigger numb because I’ve either read these things or have experienced them. ANYWAY! Enjoy!
(TRIGGER WARNING: mentions of Su!c!ide and drug use)
For this I’m going to say they’ve been dating for a little over a year
Slenderman
Two years clean is a huge accomplishment for s/o. After almost having a fatal overdose, everything almost seemed to fall into place.
You met the one and only Slenderman on a midnight stroll through the woods, blindly reading. It was only a week after you had been admitted from the hospital, but just a month later you were dating.
Slender finds you dressed up, putting on chapstick (or lipstick) in your bathroom.
He asks what you’re doing, clearly confused (he had a gift in his hands cause he wanted to surprise you.)
You then have the uncomfortable conversation about you and you’re best friends attempted suicide and how you were going out to dinner with her to celebrate 2 years clean.
Slender had this distraught aura around him when his s/o explained why her/him and her/his friend were trying to overdose.
S/o was very surprised to see him look so upset.
You were quick to assure him that you never were going to overdose again.
When Slender asked if you still had those feelings- the desire to die, you hesitate.
“I’d be lying if I said I haven’t. But I can say they’ve been coming less than they used to.”
Cue a long rant about you not telling him and him begging you to talk to him when you’re upset or having those thoughts.
The rant ends with him asking to go with you, this was a celebration after all.
Slender prioritizes the people that make him happy, and you are number one.
And that gift turned into two the next day.
Trenderman
S/o tried to jump off a building 2 years ago, but was stopped by officials and admitted to the hospital for help.
S/o had worked for Trender long before her/his suicide attempt— when she/he first turned 18.
It came as a huge shock to Trender when he found out.
They were out with some models and Trender (he was there because he appreciates his employees, and his 1 year strong s/o was there) when one stood up and made a toast to his s/o.
“To s/o, who sits with us today, two years clean and making the most of her/his life.”
Cue Trender’s shock.
It wasn’t till after the dinner Trender had demanded an explanation. 7 years of knowing each other and the way he heard of it was through someone else.
Though Trender was grateful to now know.
You left him in the dark until you arrived back to his studio apartment, just trying to find out how to explain it.
When you found the words, you gave him a long explanation that ended up making you cry. You thought you could handle explaining it, but when you saw he was upset, you started feeling selfish.
When Trender’s s/o started crying he was quick to calm you down, telling you that he wasn’t mad and had no reason to be mad. He just wished that you had told him and that he hadn’t heard it second hand.
Trender held off on working that night to take care of you and explain that he would always be there for you.
Splendorman
Splendor was an online dating app gone right.
In the beginning, the relationship was just to start out simple, in fact s/o originally got into the relationship just to be in one after the suicide attempt.
Unfortunately, that’s when things got serious and s/o felt guilty.
It was only two months later when her college professor messaged her/him to congratulate her on 2 years sober.
That’s right, alcohol and drugs was her/his trial.
Unfortunately, s/o left her laptop open when she heard the oven go off (she and Splendor were making cookies) and he saw the email.
Though Splendor didn’t want to invade his s/o’s privacy, he caught the key words: bars, drugs, medication, alcohol, and dead.
He was shy about asking his s/o about it, worried she’d/he’d be upset that he invaded their privacy, but when he saw s/o flinch, he knew it was related to him/her.
You gave him a weak smile and before you realized it, you were crying. There were sloppy apologies, mentions of guilt, and a bunch of whimpers and sobs.
Splendor was confused— well, more shocked. You had always seemed so cheery and down to earth- the playful type who liked making stupid faces and calling themselves ugly when they made those faces in a picture (of course Splendor didn’t like that, but he always found himself laughing anyway, because you were adorable to him).
“Please s/o, calm down and then we’ll try to explain this a little better.”
It was a silent ten minutes of eating cookies and watching AFV before s/o abruptly turned off the tv to explain.
It was still a little messy, sprinkled with sniffles and whimpers. After was a bunch of apologies and quick explanation of how you loved him so much and didn’t mean to use him.
Splendor calmed you down once more and gave you a long, silent hug. He knew that sometimes all you needed was a warm embrace.
It was a long night of cuddling and Splendor “forgiving you” (he felt he didn’t need to, he only said it to calm you down. He understood that that’s why most people went into relationships and he was more than guilty himself.)
After a session at the college campus, you two spent the rest of the day together, baking and visiting the pasta and his brothers.
Offenderman
In this case, s/o had actually searched out the man who takes and kills women and men alike. Discovering their relationship was an accident.
2 years later without the desire to die, s/o sat down with Offender to tell him about his/her attempt to be murdered.
Offender was surprised to say the least, he thought she had just been looking for a hookup, but Offender also wasn’t unfamiliar with the craving of death. (In my vision of their world, Offender is, like in a few peoples worlds, a heartbroken psychopath.)
Offender didn’t make a huge deal out of it. In fact, he said told you that he was proud of you and happy that even after you came to him for him to kill you, you stayed with him (especially now that you don’t want to die.).
Despite not being upset about not knowing, he did want to know why.
It took a minute to explain why you came to him seeking death, but Offender nodded along and gave you a hug.
After your explanation, he asked if you still felt that way sometimes.
When he received a nod he let you know that he was there for you.
“I’m not great with emotions, but if you ever need me, I’m here for you.”
Your day went as usual, except that you took you out for dinner.
You knew he didn’t have to do anything special for you though, him just being there with you was more than enough.
(Sorry if that doesn’t count as attempted suicide, but he is a serial rapist so I figured it’d at least make sense.)
ANYWAY! I hope you enjoyed and to anyone reading: feel free to send me a request! This was fun to write and I’d like to write more!

Photo
"No joy," Myka says, peeking into the static bag.
"That was the correct part, was it not?" Helena enlarges the photo on Myka's phone of a nineteenth-century elevator car housed at the Warehouse.
"I'm pretty sure. But that picture's not great." Myka slides the handle out and plops it back in to the tune of no sparks.
Helena noses around the storage space as The Dakota building's manager walks in.
"Maybe what you're looking for's in here," he says, plunking down a milk crate full of parts. "When they renovate, they save anything original."
"It's an elevator handle. From the original manual ones. Just not this one." Myka slips the part from the bag and holds it up.
"Might be in Ms. Shiva's apartment then. Parents took two cars and made them into a bar. Or could be from the one that went missing, the mysterious fourth car."
Myka and Helena share a concerned look, knowing the Warehouse took it without permission.
"Can we see the other two?" Myka asks.
"Look just like that one." The man points toward the ornately carved wooden car on the other side of the room. "Handle's that important to you, huh?"
"As architectural historians? Yes," Helena snips in a clipped, scholarly tone.
"Alright. Gimme a minute." He slips his phone out of its belt clip and walks out of the room.
Helena picks through dust-covered items in the crate. "This may be a lost cause."
"It must be upstairs. The walls are so thick, the ping could have come from anywhere."
"You said 'pickup,' not 'ping.'"
"Claudia called it a pickup yesterday! Today she called it a ping."
Helena huffs a disgruntled breath.
The manager waves a hand from the doorway. "She said it's ok to come up."
Myka follows the man, but Helena hangs back.
"Aren't you coming?"
"I...should look through this crate."
"You know more about this stuff than me. You should come with."
"Myka, I...."
Myka steps closer and lowers her voice. "I know you're not happy about being here, but I really need your help."
Helena holds Myka's gaze but doesn't move.
"Please."
Helena nods an apprehensive yes.
"You'll tell me what's going on with you later, right?"
Helena nods again, with equal apprehension.
Myka grimaces. "Come on."
They follow the manager out of the room and into the elevator to the fourth floor.

***BONUS SCENES***
After a less than jovial dinner (pictured above), Myka and Helena settle into their hotel room. Myka lounges in bed, already showered, wearing shorts and a t-shirt, nose buried in a book. Helena searches through her luggage after emerging from a shower swathed only in a robe.
"I know dinner wasn't great," Myka says, setting her book on the nightstand, "but something else's off. You've been weirdly touchy all day."
"I apologize for not being, as Claudia might say, 'all sunshine and rainbows.'" Helena yanks a t-shirt out of her suitcase. "Perhaps we should call the whole thing off."
"What 'thing'?"
"This trip."
"Why?" Myka sits up.
"Because me being sullen is not an anomaly."
"I know."
"Then why on earth would you subject yourself to that again?" Helena turns to face Myka and crosses her arms over her chest.
"Because you promised when you got like this you'd talk to me and I believed you."
"Fool," Helena says, the word filled with fondness rather than bite.
"Come here," Myka says, patting a spot next to her.
Helena stares at the bed but doesn't move.
"Come here..."
Helena's eyes lift to meet Myka's; the longer they stay locked, the less defiance they hold. She huffs a disgruntled breath but does as she's told. She sits stiffly, arms folded over her chest, back propped up against the headboard.
"Now, tell me what happened in that building," Myka says, laying back, turning to face Helena, head propped up by a hand. "Remember, I said I wouldn't judge you."
"You say that now..." Helena says, glancing at Myka.
"I won't," Myka says, slipping her hand over Helena's and squeezing, dragging it down to her lap, breaking her protective arm-fold.
"Where to begin," Helena grumbles, pressing her eyes closed, head falling back against the wall.
"How about..." Myka scoots up, aligning herself with Helena, all the while keeping hold of her hand. "The first time you were there, finding that artifact."
Helena rolls her head to the side and meets Myka's gaze.
Myka raises her brow and grins expectantly.
"Oh, alright," Helena grumps, sighing deeply, then lifting her head from the headboard.
"Wolly posed as an investor, and I, his wife. He and I were given guest accommodations, courtesy of Gustav Schirmer, a music publisher. We had a vague idea of what the curiosity was but needed time and access to suss out its location."
"I bet you and Wolly made a better couple than Pete and I ever did," Myka quips.
Helena huffs a short laugh. "People like us 'acted the part' on a daily basis. Anything beyond that was an extension of those fabricated selves. One had to switch 'on' any number of personas just to keep safe. It was difficult at times to remember our true selves."
"I'm sorry. That sucks."
"Easier for me than others. Though in that regard, I'm glad society seems to have changed for the better." Helena meets Myka's gaze, her eyes falling to her lips.
"Me too," Myka says as Helena cups her jaw, guiding their mouths together.
Their kiss lingers but as Helena's hand slides to the nape of Myka's neck, Myka pulls away.
"Story first," Myka says, slipping her hand over Helena's, lifting it away.
Helena pouts.
"After." Myka caresses Helena's cheek, then places a soft, brief kiss there. "I promise."
"I shall hold you to that."
"Oh, I know," Myka says, smiling. She settles back and waits as Helena collects her thoughts.
"The Dakota was unique,' Helena begins, "its design, the first of its kind in the world. A playground for 'new money,' miles away from 'civilization' further downtown. Few dared travel that far north, so their soirees were rather insular."
"That's good, right? Easier to find the artifact?" Myka says.
"Indeed. Gustav adored hosting events, along with the Steinways. Guests chased tunes all over the building as engagements spilled between apartments. Wolly and I snooped around gratuitously."
"Steinways...as in the grand-piano-maker Steinways?"
"The very same," Helena mumbles. Her eyes turn distant, a thumb rubbing idly over a knuckle, her hands linked primly on her lap.
"Did you find the artifact?" Myka asks.
"Hmm? Oh...yes. But it took quite some time," Helena answers. "And along the way, I found something far more profound." She looks down at her lap, her hands pulling away from each other, tensing.
"What was it?"
"I found my One."
"Y-You had a One?" Myka says, stiffening.
"All too briefly," Helena says, then glances at Myka. "To have found another is a kindness beyond anything I'd ever imagined. I'm sorry it took so long for me to believe it possible."
"You mean me?"
"I do." Helena brings Myka's hand up to her lips and kisses its palm.
"I, um, guess it's silly to be jealous of someone who lived over a hundred years ago. Especially since I know nothing about them." Myka scoots closer, cozying up to Helena. "Will you tell me?"
"Would you like to know?"
"I want to know everything about you."
"That may take some time."
"We have time, don't we?"
"Time has never been my ally. Especially with the ones I love."
"Let's change that." Myka tugs on Helena's sleeve, and the pair slip down to lie prone on the bed. She turns and snuggles up, head pillowed on Helena's shoulder, arm resting across her middle. Helena relaxes into Myka's hold and wraps an arm over Myka's.
"Tell me about your One," Myka says. "Or, your 'first' One."
"She...was an extraordinary woman," Helena answers. "Unlike any I'd ever known. We bonded instantly, which was unusual."
"How did you meet?"
"I caught her hiding from the merriment during a soiree, nose tucked in a book. One Mrs. Elizabeth Westcott." Helena smiles, obviously warmed by the memory.
"Mrs.?"
"A marriage for appearances; personal gain for two up-and-coming families. Residing at The Dakota allowed her husband to carry on extramarital affairs with less scrutiny. He cared little about her own."
"So you and she..."
"If those walls could talk," Helena says, her smile bordering on devilish. "We had several glorious years together before she..." Her smile fades in an instant.
"I'm afraid to ask."
"She died, as one does when one's husband's mistress plots to kill you."
"S-She was murdered?"
"Freak carriage accident. Never proven, but everyone knew. To ensure Elizabeth never gave him an heir, after Christina. The irony being we'd planned on running away to California soon enough--"
"Wait, Christina was Elizabeth's?" Myka lifts her head to look Helena in the eye.
"I loved her as if she were my own," Helena snaps, "spirited her away to England as soon as I could, with the housekeeper's help."
"You stole her?" Myka pushes away, falling back on her elbows, mouth agape.
"I rescued her," Helena barks, jerking upright. "That monstrous woman still had talons in her father. There was no doubt Christina wasn't safe. It's what Elizabeth would have wanted."
Helena moves to leave, but Myka grabs her arm.
"Don't go," Myka pleads. "I'm sorry. I said I wouldn't judge you."
Helena freezes in place, her heart pounding wildly. A few moments later, she returns to Myka's side.
"Did anyone come looking for her?" Myka asks, pushing forward so as not to leave Helena stewing.
"I don't know. I doubt they could find me as only Elizabeth knew my true identity. And I never set foot in New York again."
"So literally 1893."
Helena nods, the sour look on her face softening. "I'd thought to visit her grave but haven't found the courage."
"You should go. We could go together. It'll give you closure."
"You sound so certain."
"I know it will help. I've loved and lost, too, you know."
"Indeed, you have, my love," Helena says, then sighs heavy-heartedly. "What a pair we make."
"I think we're a good match," Myka says, tugging Helena back to lie flat again. "We could take our minds off it. Make some new, pleasant memories." She slips a hand under the tie of Helena's robe.
"You did make a promise earlier," Helena replies.
"And I always make good on my promises," Myka says, drawing the tie free, brushing a fingertip over newly exposed skin. Helena quivers and relaxes back, offering no resistance as Myka fulfills her word.

NOTES: According to the internet, the term "buggin'" was coined in New York City. The fourth elevator really did go missing during The Dakota renovations in the 1960's (pre-landmarking). Thank you to the library for being open so I could borrow books and down some facts as this got way more involved than I meant it to become (but that's part of the fun).
This story format is...in my head, I'm calling it "TV POV." If we were watching the show, we'd see things but not hear the character's thoughts, so that's what I'm going for, I think? Broad strokes and quicker resolutions due to the 45 minute-ish run time (or would this show be a 25 minute one? Hmm.) Let me know if that's not working at all. I mean these are obviously pastiches of content - the images come first then the stories materialize afterwards. They are supposed to be short and clippy - plenty of room for the reader to fill in the blanks - but this one got away from me! Also Tumblr keeps making the second image blurry and I can't figure out why...
#BERING AND WELLS#w13#fan art#fan fiction#Myka Bering#Helena HG Wells#i guess this project is#me making prompts for myself in some way?#like i need more work to do...#but I do hope there's some joy in it for those of you out there reading!

There’s No Business Like Show Business: Chapter 7 / End
Edit: It seems Maya did appear in the manga at one point — see the footnote at the end!
Some time after that day.
As Bond strolled down a West End street with jaunty steps, he saw a familiar face on the other side of the road.
“Miss Maya.”
As he called out to her, she also seemed to notice him.
“Oh, M-Mr Bond.”
“It’s Mister Bond!”
With her little sister Mae in tow, Maya was dressed in more luxurious clothes than she normally wore. But the person wearing them remained the same: as if her performance that day had been a lie, her gloomy personality was back in full force.
“What brings you here?”
“Ah, um, the nobleman who’d originally commissioned us, watched our play that day, and he asked if we’d like to perform it again, at his theatre. That’s why, today, I came here to discuss the matter with him.”
Hearing that, Bond knit his brows in dismay.
“……Are you sure? Wasn’t he the same man who mocked all of you for being poor?”
Knowing full well that his doubt was justified, Maya explained the situation in a fluster.
“T-That’s true, he still holds prejudice against us, and I’m sure it hasn’t fully been dispelled. But the passion he has for theatre — on that point alone, we are the same. So from there, bit by bit, I want us to come to an understanding.”
“Hmm. I see.”
Bond agreed with her view.
Although the nobleman’s discriminatory attitude had yet to be resolved, as long as they had a mutual goal, they would be able to reach an understanding. At this relationship that transcended social class, Bond was a tiny bit happy.
“……Fufu”
Maya suddenly let out a small laugh, and Bond was somewhat taken aback.
“What’s the matter?”
“Now that I think about it…… Mr Bond, back then, when you proposed that we fight back with ‘Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland’, I remembered the occasion that led me to fall in love with children’s literature, back when I was a child.”
“What was it?”
“Right; I was an orphan, so I stayed at an orphanage in Whitechapel. But because I couldn’t read, there was another boy who read books aloud for me.”
When she mentioned a Whitechapel orphanage, a strange sense of foreboding welled up within Bond.
“The way he spoke, was very similar to the way you think, Mr Bond…… He always gathered us behind the adults’ backs, and explained to us the distortions caused by this country’s class system. ”
“………!”
In direct contrast to Maya, who was recounting the matter with nostalgia, Bond had broken out in goosebumps at this unexpected revelation.
“It all happened a long time ago, so I’ve forgotten most of it; but when you came up with the idea to compete with the West End theatres, the images from back then sprang to mind…… I-Is something wrong?”
Seeing how Bond had dropped his gaze and grown deep in thought, Maya enquired after him in a worried tone.
He forced himself to suppress the smile that had suddenly bubbled up within him.
“No, it’s nothing.”
——Could it be, that those children were……
Having received these scraps of information, the figures of the children Maya had talked about, as he imagined them, rose in his mind. They overlapped perfectly with the brothers he knew so well.
However, in the end, this was just a possibility. Bond cut off his train of thought, and promptly regained his composure as he turned to face Maya once again.
“Anyway, Miss Maya: congratulations on your new commission.”
“N-No, no, it was really all thanks to you and your colleagues, Mr Bond.”
“All thanks to you~”
Maya shook her head in haste, and Mae copied her.
“Not at all, I just suggested the idea. What made it possible were the abilities of you and your company.”
“S—Still…… Even so, thank you so much. Well, when the show is confirmed, please do come and watch.”
“Of course. I’m really excited for it. When the dates are settled, I’ll be sure to buy tickets——”
At that moment, a little idea popped into his head. He held up an index finger, and smiled at Maya.
“Miss Maya. I won’t be collecting any coaching fees for that time, but could you do me just one favour?”
“U-Um…… What would it be?”
She tilted her head to the side, and Bond leaned in just a little.
“Regarding the tickets for the performance: on top of mine, I would like you to add just one more ticket, and deliver it anonymously to 221B Baker Street—— Sherlock Holmes’ flat.”
“Well, if it’s just that, then it would be alright……”
Though she still found it curious, Maya agreed to his strange request. Satisfied, Bond stood back upright, and imagined the scene that would unfold when the ticket was delivered.
Surely, that man would be puzzled to receive a ticket he didn’t remember purchasing. Then the mystery of its anonymous sender would stoke his curiosity, and he would head down to the theatre to watch Maya’s company perform.
——If he sat next to the detective, in disguise and with an innocent demeanour, would he notice?
Having thought of an absolutely thrilling prank, the corners of his mouth turned upwards in a faint, alluring smile. But that expression immediately changed into the refreshing smile of an agreeable young man.
“Thank you. Well then, I look forward to your performance.”
“Yes, and it is I who should be thanking you. I look forward to seeing you there too.”
Bidding farewell to the two sisters, Bond walked through the theatre district once again.
The streets were lined with elegant buildings — a sight which contrasted directly with the East End.
However, Bond knew that the people living in that completely opposite world had left an indelible mark here.
Now, the former actress who had conquered the dazzling world of theatre — James Bond, was on his way back to his original stage: as a special agent working in the shadows.
T/N: Things really came full circle… (tears of joy)
Edit: I was looking through the early chapters when I found this page in Chapter 1 (”The Scarlet Eyes”):
This little girl is most likely Maya! Notice that she’s holding a volume of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Her hair colour in greyscale is also similar to Albert’s — we know from Story 2 Chapter 1 that she has chestnut-coloured hair, which is pretty much Albert’s hair colour too.
Here’s a close-up of the panel showing the book title:
This was really one of those blink-and-you’d-miss-it details, and I really appreciate the attention paid to them!

Back to the second game we go for The Return of the Great Departed Soul! (Part one, this is another two-parter case)
Episode 2-3: The Return of the Great Departed Soul
So now, chronologically, six months have passed since The Unspeakable Story. Susato returned to Japan at the end of the first game and hasn't returned yet. Ryu was reprimanded for all the perjury and the questionable McGilded defense, so he had his right to stand in court revoked for now and instead had to focus on studying English law some more. He's done so quite patiently and now he feels he's ready to return. He just needs to get Stronghart's permission first. Meanwhile, the Great Exhibition is happening in Hyde Park, pulling in visitors and scientists from all over the world. Exciting! (S)Holmes hands Ryu a newspaper with an article on the exhibition, talking about how the brighter things shine, the darker the shadows cast behind them. By now, Ryu is fluent enough in (S)Holmes speak to know this means he should flip over the newspaper. There, we find an article of an entirely different sort.
So not only was Van Zieks apparently attacked, Ryu shows horror and concern at the notion. No hard feelings from our wholesome boy! (S)Holmes explains that London's finest criminals often find ways to get acquittals from trials through bribery, threats, sham witnesses... We saw this in McGilded, of course, so we know all too well how dangerous that can get. But since the Reaper and his curse are immune to such tactics, when a ringleader or fellow ends up being 'taken' by the curse, retaliation can occur. So it's established that this isn't the first time Van Zieks has been attacked by a group of thugs. Fortunately, Van Zieks is an “accomplished combatant” who doesn't take these attacks lying down. Unfortunately, the thugs were carrying guns this time. Uhoh.
This warms my heart, it really does. Van Zieks has been a terrible scumbag, but Ryu doesn't think he's gotten his comeuppance at all. He's genuinely concerned for this man and intends to find out more about his condition. So since he was planning to meet with Stronghart and ask for attorney permission anyway, it's the perfect opportunity to also ask about Van Zieks! Iris decides to tag along because she wants to visit the Great Exhibition. Let's shove the newspaper in Stronghart's face as soon as the game allows it.
The phrasing of “number one prosecutor” is interesting, but then... We never learn of any other (living) veteran prosecutors in this country, so of course Van Zieks would be number one. Stronghart says there's no need for concern; Van Zieks would not be so easily dispatched. Street ruffians are no match for him, since he's a very capable fighter. Seems like that sword he carries around isn't just for show after all. As for why he was attacked this time... Well, a month ago Van Zieks prosecuted a leader of a criminal organization. Nice to know he didn't just return to retirement and instead got back to work like a normal person without cherrypicking his cases based on what Ryu's doing. The defendant was acquitted, no doubt thanks to large sums of money being shifted around behind the scenes, but he still met a dramatic end just yesterday during an accident at the Great Exhibition. The man in question was Odie Asman, and the one now being detained on suspicion of murder without a defense attorney is Professor Albert Harebrayne. Albert's case has just been assigned to Ryu, so we're sure to find out more about Asman as we go. As as final touch, Ryu asks Stronghart why he continues to use Van Zieks as a prosecutor. Since the criminals are becoming fearful of the curse and attacking him, it's dangerous to Van Zieks himself. Stronghart explains that he has two reasons: Firstly, Van Zieks is the best prosecutor in the capital, bar none. And secondly, any deaths that have occurred outside the courtrooms after his trials have nothing to do with him. (S)Holmes alluded to the same thing, saying that Van Zieks had a rock-hard alibi for each and every mysterious death.
“So he will continue to prosecute on behalf of the Crown. ...Unless he wishes otherwise, of course.” With that, Stronghart admits he needs to get going since he's already 11 hours late to his next appointment (fsdkjfls). Ryu asks where he might be able to find Van Zieks and is told to head to his office. So even after being told that Van Zieks is just fine, Ryu is still concerned and wants to discuss the matter with the man himself. Let's gooo! Naturally, the first thing out of Van Zieks's mouth when he catches Ryu and Iris in his office is to wonder what the heck they're doing here.
So there's several things of interest in the office, with the game automatically addressing the biggest one: Van Zieks has an apprentice now! It's a mysterious, rigid dude wearing a hood and a mask who is absolutely not familiar to us, nope. We don't know him. Gosh, what a mystery. Van Zieks doesn't seem to know who he is either, instead just referring to him as his apprentice and nothing more.
Ryu sees this as an opening to ask about the attack on the Reaper that was in the newspaper. Van Zieks admits that he too is very interested in the true identity of the Reaper. “Assuming, that is, such a fabled fiend genuinely inhabits our great courtrooms.” The conversation halts for a moment so we can examine the office and this is the best opportunity for humanizing traits we've gotten so far, so LET'S DO IT! The enormous portrait in the back is the first thing to peek at.
Iris says whoever painted it exaggerated the subject's handsomeness, which in turn is reminiscent of Napoleon ordering the painter to make him look more attractive. That's super vain and not an attractive quality in a person at all. I laughed the whole way through that bit of dialogue and Van Zieks, who was in earshot the entire time, gets his feathers ruffled.
When Ryu asks who it is then, Van Zieks doesn't reply. BACKSTORY ALERT! Examining the chalices and bottles on the left leads to Van Zieks explaining the hallowed bottles are filled with the finest grapes from the finest vineyards he visits (so it is grape juice!!!) and he personally oversees the chalices being made by the finest crystal craftsmen in the world. Right, so not only is he filthy stinkin' rich, he's a perfectionist. Iris points out that Van Zieks throws the chalices and bottles around like they're worthless, to which Van Zieks says:
“Before you open your mouth next time, you should consider the poor artisans whose work you defile.”
As it turns out, passive aggression is contagious now. Ryu replies with a “So it's my fault? Silly me! How could I ever have thought otherwise?” and honestly I love that he's got enough guts to say this out loud. Our boy is growing a spine. Examining the wine casks has Ryu and Iris theorize about how there might be dead bodies in there, which once again ruffles Van Zieks's feathers.
Snrk. Examining the big diorama in the middle of the room has Ryu and Iris wonder whether Van Zieks can't go to the Exhibition in person and this is his way of dealing with that, which has Van Zieks snap that it's obviously an investigative aid. He even has pets of sorts in his office, in the form of a couple of bats hanging from the curtains. Alright, so the game's definitely humanizing this poor man now. No matter how many crazy stories Iris and Ryu come up with about him, there's usually a very innocent explanation to debunk the eerie myths. Something particularly interesting happens when Ryu shows Van Zieks his defense attorney armband. Van Zieks asks what the reason is for showing it to a British prosecutor, to which Ryu admits that he doesn't quite know. Van Zieks is silent for a bit, then says that he understands. “There's merit in reminding yourself of who helped you become what you are today.”
As he says it, he reaches for his prosecutor's badge and if you're aware of the backstory, you'll know he's thinking of Klint. More importantly, this conversation puts Ryu and Van Zieks on the same level. Ryu is always thinking of Kazuma, who 'helped him become who he is today' and the armband signifies this, along with the sword. Similarly, Van Zieks lost someone very close to him and he's walking the path of prosecutor in his brother's memory. Ryu thanks Van Zieks for understanding and it's very significant that Van Zieks understands in the first place. Remember, in the first game he was under the impression that a Japanese person could never understand a British person and vice versa.
Showing Van Zieks the newspaper article has him looking a bit embarrassed, pointing out that a reporter must've been nearby and he'd been careless to let himself get photographed. Either way, all the thugs responsible have already been apprehended. The investigation into Odie Asman's activities meant that their arrests were already imminent anyway, and some hoped to kill Van Zieks before that happened. Much like McGilded, Asman used his wealth to buy his way towards an acquittal in court, but “he got his comeuppance in the end.” Which is strange, right? Very suspicious. Van Zieks asks whether Ryu believes he has some sort of divine ability to make an accident like that happen. Ryu admits that would be far-fetched, and thinks to himself that even if Van Zieks were the Reaper, he'd have to be innocent of this particular death. We also learn that Van Zieks is familiar with Professor Harebrayne, the suspect in the Asman incident. When told that Ryu will be taking on the defense, Van Zieks is shocked.
Van Zieks goes on to explain that he knows Albert quite well. They were at university together. While he's lived in Germany for quite a few years, Albert is actually from a respectable British family. And despite Albert being in the science faculty and Van Zieks in law, they got along quite well. Now he's in pretty hot water for that Asman accident.
Hm. I don't quite know what to make of this reaction. I think what's going on here isn't that Van Zieks is rattled because Albert is being defended by a Japanese person, but because he's being defended by a rookie attorney who was just disbarred for six months for accidentally encouraging perjury, false witness and crime scene tampering in a court of law. Yes, Ryu has won his trials every single time, but it came at a price. Aside from this, there's one other thing Van Zieks knows about Ryu: he'll pursue the truth, no matter what. This means that if Albert indeed didn't succeed at inventing teleportation, it'll be revealed in court because exposing shams is Ryu's whole deal.
We learn that Van Zieks will be the one to prosecute Albert tomorrow, which is curious to say the least. Ryu wants to know why he'd do something like that, with Iris pointing out that so long as the Reaper is the prosecutor, Albert is doomed. Van Zieks replies that he's a Crown prosecutor and a mortal like any other; he's no demigod. In other words, he doesn't believe the curse to be a real curse. Iris points out that everyone who's been prosecuted by Van Zieks has died (which is already objectively wrong), to which Van Zieks replies that he usually prosecutes the vilest wretches of society.
… Harsh. Ryu points out that Soseki wasn't a vile wretch though, with Iris chiming in that Gina's also turned her life around and she's working very hard now. Van Zieks admits that things have changed ever since meeting Ryu- which of course has to do with Van Zieks's need to face Ryu in court even in mediocre trials rather than pursue his usual corrupted targets- but the point is that if any of those vile wretches died in mysterious circumstances, it was “at the hand of their own kind”, not Van Zieks's. So basically, he believes that they were killed because they were dubious people engaged with dubious activities, not because of the Reaper's curse. Not only that, but ever since the rumors of the Reaper began, the number of serious crimes in London has decreased significantly. Even the most hardened criminals can be made fearful of their lives. Therefore, if his pseudonym of the Reaper can serve a useful purpose, he'll “adopt it gladly and with honour”. Ryu repeats that which he already told Stronghart; that it's putting Van Zieks in danger.
He really is a prosecutor on the edge with nothing to lose, huh. So what Van Zieks is basically saying is that he doesn't care if he dies, so long as he spends the rest of his life serving the 'useful purpose' of carrying the Reaper moniker to intimidate the vilest of society. But is that really all there is to it? (Spoilers: It's not)
There's a bit more talk about the mysterious apprentice here, with Van Zieks explaining the man was placed in his care under Stronghart's orders. He's wearing a mask on Stronghart's orders and also doesn't speak to anyone from outside the office on Stronghart's orders. HM. Van Zieks claims that Stronghart isn't one for “meaningless follies”, therefore he must have a good reason. This implies that Van Zieks believes in Stronghart's judgment almost blindly. To round up the conversation, Van Zieks asks about “that Nipponese man. The one arrested twice in succession six months ago. With the stoop. And the moustache. And the jitters.” Looks super offensive at first glance, but I gotta admit, after six months I wouldn't remember Soseki's name either. Better to describe him than to guess the name and get it wrong. Still though, just because it's not super offensive doesn't mean it's not offensive. Just saying “the one you defended six months ago” would've done the trick. Either way, Ryu says he's doing just fine and a letter from him arrived by post just the other day.
So this is interesting. Earlier, Van Zieks claimed in his own words that he doesn't believe in the curse and those who died had it coming to them, but he's still inquiring after Soseki. Perhaps not so much because he's worried about Soseki himself, but because he's curious whether this man has successfully escaped the curse so far. He would know that for a fact about Gina, but the only way to verify Soseki's status is to ask Ryu about it.
Time to leave this glass cage of exposition and meet the defendant in person! Albert spouts a whole lot of dialogue about how his machine is treated differently depending on whether the case is treated as an accident or as murder. If it's murder, it can be examined up close and that's what Albert doesn't want. It has to be treated as an accident so that it'll be protected from prying eyes through The Special Dispensation for Scientific Equipment Act (wow that's a mouthful). Of course, that's not entirely what we're interested in. Let's ask about his friendship with Van Zieks! Ryu asks what he was like back in his university days and the answer surprises him.
HAH, wonderfully written exchange, this one. Albert goes to describe him as “the little darling of the Van Zieks family, with all its great aristocratic origins”. So Van Zieks has some very noble blood in him. We could've already guessed this from his title of Lord, but apparently it's a bit more serious. I could derail here with wild theories about his family originating from the Netherlands and having migrated to the UK around the time the first king of the Netherlands, Willem I van Oranje Nassau, rose to power in 1813. Willem changed the way nobility works to some degree in the country and not all noble families would've agreed with his way of doing things. But anyway, point is, Van Zieks is a big shot. Albert says that it was kind of a shock to him when he came back to Britain and discovered 'what Van Zieks had become'. He heard that there was 'a very big event' that completely changed Van Zieks after his graduation, but doesn't know what it was because he was already in Germany at the time. So here we have some more traces of that backstory and we have enough pieces to start sticking some things together. We know Van Zieks was once betrayed by a friend and we now know he was a very modest, pleasant gentleman when he was young. Whatever happened must've been very harsh indeed to turn him into such a sour lemon. Either way, Albert doesn't seem to know yet that Van Zieks will be the prosecutor and Ryu doesn't have the heart to tell him.
So let's investigate the crime scene! Here, it's confirmed that Gina Lestrade is indeed just fine and now in training to become a detective with Gregson. Cute! So eventually we get to talk to Gregson about Van Zieks and how he's acquainted with Albert. Gregson is overdramatically shocked to find out that the two of them are old buddies.
Remember when Van Zieks took a five year hiatus and nobody had to mysteriously die from the Reaper's curse? Those were the days, eh Gregson? Now he's even prosecuting his own friends willy-nilly. Gregson states he has no idea what goes on in Van Zieks's head (a sentiment we've heard before in 1-4) and goes on to bring up the newspaper article about Van Zieks being attacked. When told that our good old pal the Reaper is just fine, Gregson utters a very uncomfortable “glad to hear it” which honestly had me wondering whether he'd preferred Van Zieks to die.
Up until a certain someone gets killed and stuffed into a suitcase, I'd reckon. Gregson says that Van Zieks is a top class prosecutor, but not even he can always push the right verdict through. “Sometimes justice can't win.” Gregson explains that naturally, Scotland Yard suspected Van Zieks at first and assumed he was taking matters into his own hands. There was a very thorough investigation and the outcome was that Van Zieks was in no way related to the mysterious deaths. So that's three people now who all insist Van Zieks couldn't possibly have committed the murders. Gregson says he's willing to stake his reputation on it, even. Of course, Gregson would know for sure, wouldn't he? But the narrative is telling us over and over that Van Zieks himself isn't the Reaper, with even Van Zieks himself implying he'd like to know just who the Reaper is. There's a conspiracy happening that Van Zieks is the centerpiece of, with the narrative really pushing the mystery aspect of it. The writers want us to care about the truth of the Reaper for sure.
OOOH that's meta! Ryu, being nosy and overly invested in Van Zieks's life, asks Gregson whether he knows about the 'incident' which changed Van Zieks after graduation.
Okay he clearly knows. Even a first time player can tell from this single reaction that Gregson's lying. The mystery thickens! At the end of the conversation, when Gregson's gone off, Iris recommends asking (S)Holmes about it instead. Safe bet, since (S)Holmes continuously knows more than he's letting on. To the house of wax we go! When asked about it, it's clear that he does know something (and is described as suddenly clamming up), but before he can explain there's a distraction in the form of Madam Tusspells and we have to sit through a mostly-unrelated Joint Reasoning segment. It leads into a conversation about a mass murderer known as the Professor. Ten years ago, there was a series of murders which rocked the capital right around the time Van Zieks graduated from university. Five people were killed before the man was caught and executed. This fifth victim was Klint van Zieks, Barok's older brother.
I really, really dislike this phrasing because Van Zieks was already studying law to begin with. He'd just graduated as a prosecutor; his brother's death had nothing to do with him pursuing that path. Anyway...
OOOH that's meta! So remember way back in the first essay when I said the backstory is optional? Well, here it is. The Great Ace Attorney is going all in for it. It's being tied to the ongoing plot, just as pretty much all the main prosecutor backstories are. Edgeworth's backstory is tied to Von Karma being the final boss, Godot's backstory is tied to the Fey lineage, Klavier's backstory (I say this lightly) is tied to Phoenix's disgrace... Now Van Zieks's story is tied to the serial killer who ruined so many lives a decade ago. And technically, we already have all the puzzle pieces we need for the next twist; we know Van Zieks was betrayed by a Japanese person who was his friend. So really, we can now say with absolutely certainty that the man arrested and executed back then was a Japanese buddy of Van Zieks.
The investigation segment is pretty much over, but the game has one more scene for us. This is something Ryunosuke won't witness, but the scriptwriters deemed it so important that we're ignoring Ryu to focus solely on the two characters involved. And cutting away from our main character is something that usually doesn't happen in Ace Attorney. Even when characters like Phoenix or Ryu are out of commission for whatever reason, a new 'main character' takes over for a second and we see everything from their point of view. I can think of only one other scene viewed without Ryu there, which happened in 1-5 just before Susato had to leave London. So what we have here is a very private moment between Van Zieks and Albert.
AWWW... The scenes in the office were great and all, but this right here is perhaps the most humanizing exchange we'll ever see with Barok. The reason for that, I think, is precisely because Ryu isn't there. He's alone with an old friend now, which means he can let his guard down more than he usually would. Even so, it's worth noting here that he doesn't look directly at Albert. He stands with his back to him the entire time and I'm certain this is intentional, because they could just as easily have rotated him into that sideways view that's often used in dialogue and courtroom scenes. He made his way down to the gaol to speak with his friend after ten long years, but is reluctant to look right at him. The conversation itself feels rather distant as well. Albert is delighted to see Van Zieks, but the sentiment isn't returned vocally. Van Zieks points out that they're meeting again “in prison of all places” and that the court will decide Albert's fate tomorrow. When Van Zieks raises a warning, Albert says he already knows his friend will be prosecuting and doesn't appear bothered at all at first. He does try to raise a question in the form of “Are you really...?”, but ultimately drops it and says that he knows Van Zieks has his best interests at heart. Van Zieks says he wouldn't entrust the trial of his friend to anyone else, and Albert thanks him for that. So my first guess upon taking in that dialogue is that Albert wonders for a brief moment whether Van Zieks really is the Reaper/really is cursed, only to shake it off because he considers the man his friend. Van Zieks seems to know it's risky to prosecute Albert, but deems it more important to handle the case himself than to let someone else do it. This, as we learn later, has to do with the Special Dispensation for Scientific Equipment Act and the protection of Albert's scientific secrets.
Next day, we're at the Old Bailey! In the defendant lobby, Ryu is once again told by Albert that the true goal to aim for in this trial is to protect his scientific hypothesis. So hypothetically speaking, the ideal outcome here would be to prove the death was accidental and that the kinesis was a success at the same time. (S)Holmes and Iris don't believe Albert's theory to be sound though, instead saying it couldn't possibly be done. In the courtroom, Ryu faces off against Van Zieks once more for the first time in six months! The judge is quick to point out that Odie Asman is a name familiar to him; a man who was prosecuted only a month ago by Van Zieks. When he asks whether this death is the work of the Reaper, Van Zieks instead describes it as “divine retribution”, but also “a direct result of the actions of the accused, Professor Albert Harebrayne”. The prosecution asserts that the instantaneous kinesis demonstration was a success. He himself can't say for certain whether it's a sound theory, but it's being investigated by the British government since it was deemed to have potential and the prosecution's case aligns with the notion that there was indeed instantaneous- You know what? Let's just call it teleportation. That's easier to type.
Unfortunately, Van Zieks doesn't want to follow the accident angle. Instead, he outright accuses his old friend of murdering Asman using the totally-functional-teleportation-machine-which-totally-worked to be the sole benefactor of a scientific grant. Harsh. Very harsh. I don't entirely understand why he didn't pursue the accident angle instead, but then, I don't quite know enough about law. My guess is that as the prosecution, he's not allowed to. Scotland Yard found enough evidence at the scene to substantiate a murder plot, especially that damning screwdriver that Ryu so graciously handed to Gregson, so that's what the prosecution has to go with, maybe? It's up to the defense attorney to debunk that down to an accident, then, so in essence Van Zieks is counting on Ryu to 'defeat him' and prove the murder aspect wrong. It would align with the conversation Albert had with Van Zieks in prison, where he said that 'it was a terrible accident and the young Eastern man acting as his defence assured him that he can prove it'.
So speaking of that screwdriver, Albert tries to discredit it himself by saying that if he had stabbed Asman on the stage, there would've been a whole lot of blood. Van Zieks pours himself a glass of wine and 'congratulates' his friend on a good rebuttal.
“Here's to you, Albert!”
Albert laughs it off sheepishly, saying he's nothing compared to “Barok” (awww, first name basis), but a chalice is immediately flung. Van Zieks says Albert neglected to mention one crucial possibility, which is that the lack of blood is explained by the notion that the screwdriver remained in the victim's chest to plug the wound. Therefore, since the demonstration was totally a success, the screwdriver was teleported along with the victim. Ryu thinks to himself that he had no idea the victim had been stabbed and wonders whether Van Zieks kept that information to himself to keep the upper hand on purpose. This whole thing jars me a little, because the screwdriver is brought up relatively early in the trial during the very first cross-examination. Is not mentioning it during the opening statement and waiting for Gregson to bring it up three minutes later really the same as 'keeping it to himself to gain the upper hand'?
Either way, Ryu counters, saying that the screwdriver was found at the stage and therefore didn't teleport at all, with Gregson serving as an official witness to this location. It's pretty clear from the next dialogue that Gregson never told Van Zieks where that screwdriver was found.
“That you contravened the Special Dispensation for Scientific Equipment Act?”
Gregson is immediately up in arms, but it's fine. There was no investigation needed to find a screwdriver lying in plain sight. So now Ryu decides to tighten the screws. He claims that if the prosecution can't explain the inconsistency (the screwdriver being found on the stage but no blood being there so clearly it must've plugged the wound), the testimony is unreliable. Van Zieks doesn't reply and Ryu thinks to himself that he looks stumped, but uh...
He just looks annoyed to me. The person to object next is not Van Zieks, it's Albert. He says that metal can't be teleported with the machine, so it only makes sense the screwdriver stayed behind and there's no inconsistency at all. Van Zieks suggests: “Clearly we should hear the accused's explanation. … Or should I say, this brilliant scientist's explanation?” And I think here in these two sentences we have the crux of the issue. Albert wants to be treated as a legitimate scientist above all else. Even if that means he's branded a murderer, so long as his hypothesis is protected and the confidentiality stands, it makes no difference to him. This was likely discussed with Van Zieks the night before as well. Albert is apparently willing to die for the sake of his scientific principles and... Well. I'm sure Van Zieks can understand. He's willing to die for the sake of serving the Reaper purpose. In a way, this means the defendant and the prosecution are in cahoots together, which is another first in Ace Attorney history. The two of them are fighting to keep the hypothesis of teleportation intact and if Ryu manages to prove that it was an accidental death, then great! Unfortunately, the second that screwdriver was discovered, the chances of that became slim to none. It was murder, plain and simple. On a sidenote, I found this little gem:
I'm counting this as humanization, because the underlying sentiment here is that despite his haughty better-than-thou attitude, Van Zieks is still friends with someone so very scatterbrained, his name is forgotten sometimes. Even Ryu is taken aback by the purity of the friendship.
Heh heh... Time to cause some more havoc by informing the court that Asman's metal-rimmed glasses were still on his face and since Albert already said metal can't be teleported, his hypothesis is a load of tosh. The jurors go up in arms about it, saying the machine should be stripped down and examined. The game gives Ryu the option to either raise an objection or 'wait and see', but this is another one of those fake choices. Waiting and seeing just leads to a bit more dialogue between the jurors before Ryu steps in of his own accord. He says Albert would have no reason to build such an elaborate fake machine and put on a public display for murder, but Van Zieks counters with the very good reason: Money. The jurors are even more outraged, calling him a fake scientist who's only in it for the guineas, and Albert begs them to believe that his science is built upon a sound hypothesis. Van Zieks comes in to 'save the day' (sort of).
“The fact remains that the victim was transported instantly to the Crystal Tower. Which means that the experiment... was a success.”
And I gotta say, this next bit is just very enjoyable to me. The way it's written is so great.
HEH HEH.... Van Zieks has some more witnesses to summon who saw the incident from some 'very special seats', but let's end the essay here for now and pick it back up next time!

Don’t Call It A Crush (Ushijima Wakatoshi) [Part 2]
Summary: Ushijima Wakatoshi is convinced he doesn’t have a crush on you
Warnings: Implied smut, angst, smut in future parts
Word Count: 2.5k
[A/N]: Okay so Tendou acts a little bit as the villain but I needed him to further the plot, so unfortunately he doesn’t seem like the best friend to have in this. Also kinda messy but I’m just gonna chalk it up to my lingering writers block
Part 1
—————
”Waka-kun!” You sighed out dramatically as soon as you approached his seated form in the cafeteria. You draped yourself against his back but he made no move to push you off.
“(F/N),” he said, before continuing to eat his lunch while Tendou greeted you from across him.
You sighed again, a pout on your lips as you sat down beside the ace, “I think I left my jacket in your dorm last night.”
He hummed, “I’ll check after practice—“
”You came over!?” Tendou exclaimed.
”Yeah!” You nodded, “Where were you—“
”The gym— you should’ve texted me.”
”Well, I didn’t know!”
He frowned, sprawling his arms out on the lunch table, when he realized something. He looked at Ushijima, “Is that why you were working on homework at one in the morning?”
”Yes,” he simply answered, making you gasp.
”You had homework!? Why’d you let me interrupt you!”
”You wanted to come over.”
You pouted again, ignoring the way your heart fluttered at the fact he dropped everything just so you could hang out, “Idiot, you could’ve said no.”
You huffed to yourself. Every once in a while Ushijima would pull stupid shit like that. There had even been one time a couple months ago now where he had even taken the fall for you when you were caught skipping out on class duties. He told the teacher he convinced you to come to his volleyball practice, and what was worse was that you didn’t even find out until he was missing from practice due to detention.
And there was another time about a month ago now where a stray volleyball had hit you hard in the leg and he insisted he leave practice to help you to the infirmary even though there were plenty of other capable players to take you— the captain left practice. Sure it was only for a short while but the coach still didn’t appreciate it (Tendou even told you he made him run laps after practice).
He didn’t do stuff like that too often but every time he did it made you feel really guilty and you hated to admit that it was why it made it that much more difficult to get over him. Every incident gave you some hope that there was a slight chance he really did feel something for you, but that hope was easily crushed when he never made any move to return the affection you’d give him.
Tendou’s eyes were narrowed on Ushijima as he tried to figure him out.
”What were you two doing?” He asked.
”We watched a crappy horror movie cause I thought it was funny,” you frowned deeper, “It was definitely not worth staying up til one in the morning to finish homework.”
”I enjoyed it,” Ushijima said, taking another bite of his lunch.
You raised an eyebrow, “You didn’t even understand half of what was happening.” You said, to which he simply shrugged.
”You watched a bad horror movie without me!?” Tendou shouted, clearly offended.
”I thought you’d be there!” You shouted back.
”Well I wasn’t—!”
”Then we’ll watch it this weekend, so shut up—“
”You two are yelling already?” A new voice interjected.
You looked up to find Semi and Reon, Semi taking his seat next to you while Reon walked around the table to sit next to Tendou.
”Yeah, well, Satori’s being a baby,” you muttered, answering Semi who asked the question.
”About what?” Reon added.
”Nothing, he’s just upset because Ushijima and I watched a movie without him.”
Semi hummed, before grabbing an article of clothing out of his bag and dropping it on your head.
With furrowed brows, you pulled it off to find that it was the jacket you thought you left at Ushijima’s.
”Is that your jacket?” Tendou suddenly asked, eyebrow raised.
It was as if your heart stopped in that moment as you turned to look at Tendou. There was always just something about his face when he was thinking, that made you anxious.
”Yeah,” you nodded, brushing it off as you tucked it away in your own bag.
”You were at Semi’s last night?”
There. You pinpointed exactly why your anxiety was justified when it came to Tendou.
”Uh— yeah, I went over to study,” you answered coolly.
You snuck a glance at Semi, whose eyes were now widened in surprise, looking like a dead give away.
You quickly stomped on his foot, making him hiss, but he quickly got the gist, and nodded, “Yeah, we were studying...” he trailed off, glaring at you.
Reon frowned, “You were? You should’ve called, I could use the extra studying.”
”Sorry,” you answered bashfully, “We’ll do that next time— Tendou stop looking at me like that,” you snapped at the red-head, his piercing gaze sending chills down your spine.
He glanced back and forth between you and Semi, before his eyes landed on Ushijima, who looked the same as always, but a smile curled at the corners of Tendou’s lips anyway.
”Sorry, sorry~” he practically sang, “Tell me more about that movie now.”
You eyed him warily, but if it took the focus off of you and Semi then you’d take it.
The rest of lunch felt off from that moment on, and you knew whatever Tendou was thinking wasn’t good.
If only you truly knew what he was planning.
The thing about Tendou was that just because he was a strange guy, it didn’t make him stupid. After all, he was able to keep his grades high enough in a school like Shiratorizawa in order to continue playing volleyball.
He also hated being wrong.
Unfortunately, it happened a lot more often outside of volleyball but he still had unmatchable observational skills.
So when he first had the hunch back in second year that you had a crush on Ushijima, he did everything he could to figure out if he was right.
And he was. Making him and Semi to be the only two people that knew about your crush on Ushijima.
At the time you forced him to promise not to tell Ushijima and as much of a little shit he could be, he did cherish your friendship, so he kept his mouth shut.
But almost a year later he had noticed little things here and there that Ushijima would do for you, subtle enough for pretty much everyone to miss, including you, but not for Tendou.
So he was hell-bent on figuring out if those gestures Ushijima did meant something more.
But the male was as dense as ever and prying any information about his love life was useless.
However, a new factor had entered the equation that made Tendou’s brain start working overtime.
Your jacket.
It wasn’t hard to figure out what was going on between you and Semi, and Tendou was more than intrigued.
After the jacket mix up in lunch he started paying closer attention to both of you. Noting every time one of you left and the other followed only ten minutes later, watching the way you both interacted in each other’s presences, and the terrible cover up’s when one was asked where they were.
After about two weeks of watching and observing silently he was originally going to confront you about it, but a much more entertaining option had come up one afternoon.
Unfortunately, it started a bit of a shit storm.
Ushijima, Tendou, you, Semi, and Reon all decided to meet up and study in the library on one of those rare days that practice ended a bit earlier than usual.
It wasn’t unusual for the five of you to study together whenever you had the chance, especially for Ushijima’s sake who wasn’t exactly the smartest person outside of volleyball.
The plan was to head to your dorms and grab your books and meet up in the library, but Ushijima and Tendou had made it down first.
With no sign of you and the others yet as the two got settled down at a table, Tendou decided that now would be the best time to try and figure out again if Ushijima liked you.
“So, (F/N) and Semi...” Tendou started, gauging if the two names together sparked any kind of reaction from the ace.
It didn’t.
Ushijima looked up at Tendou, waiting for him to finish, but when he didn’t he asked, “What about (F/N) and Semi?”
”Oh nothing~” he sing songed, leaning back in his seat, balancing the chair on its back legs, “Do you think they like each other?”
Ushijima looked mildly confused at this, “Isn’t that why they’re friends?”
Tendou laughed, “I meant more than friends Wakatoshi.”
”Why are you asking?”
”They just seen closer than usual, don’t you think. I’ve seen the two sneaking around together a lot~”
Ushijima didn’t understand what Tendou was getting at and it showed. But he supposed that the two of you had grown closer, however it didn’t really make him think anything of it. You still snuck into his and Tendou’s dorm on a regular basis and hung out with the two as usual so he couldn’t specifically say he thought there was something going on between you and Semi.
But there were two words that Tendou had said that stuck out to him.
”Sneaking around?”
His smile widened upon seeing more of a reaction from his friend, “I’m pretty sure (F/N) and Semi are sleeping with each other,” he bluntly stated.
Ushijima didn’t know what to make of the accusation, but he did know he felt....offended.
“(F/N) isn’t like that. If she was in a relationship with Semi she would’ve told us.”
”Unless it’s just sex,” he suggested, leaning forward and resting his chin upon his crossed arms on the table. He looked up at Ushijima who looked even more offended now, “Think about it, she was at his dorm the night she thought she left her jacket at ours.”
”She said they were studying.”
”They seemed very panicked for two friends just studying.”
Ushijima narrowed his eyes at Tendou, “(F/N)‘s not sleeping with Semi.”
Tendou hummed, “What makes you think that?”
”Because (F/N)‘s not like that,” he reiterated.
”But what if she was? Maybe you don’t want to believe it because of your little crush on her~”
His eyes narrowed further, “I’ve told you before Tendou, I don’t have feelings for (F/N).”
”Are you sure?”
“Enough Tendou,” Ushijima said, getting annoyed now, “I told you before, I would never date (F/N).”
Tendou sighed, it seemed that he wouldn’t be getting anything out of him today, and besides, he also spotted Reon making his way to their table, “Fine, fine. I’ll drop it.”
“Hey,” Reon greeted, taking a seat beside Ushijima.
”Where’s Semi?” Tendou asked him upon noticing he hadn’t come down with him.
”He’ll be down soon, he misplaced one of his assignments so he’s looking for it right now. He said we can start without him. What about (F/N)? Is she here yet.”
”She was helping Shirabu stretch before going to her dorm,” Ushijima answered, “She should be down soon.”
”Will she mind if we start without her?”
”No, she won’t care,” Tendou said, pulling out his study guides as he reluctantly started studying.
Though unknown to the three of them, and especially Tendou and Ushijima... you actually were there.
Your back was pressed against one of the book shelves, out of sight but definitely not out of ear shot.
Your heart was pounding out of your chest.
Tendou knew about you and Semi.
He told Ushijima.
Ushijima admitted he’d never date you.
It was one thing when you just assumed he didn’t feel the same but hearing it was completely different.
You were mortified, embarrassed, and heart broken.
Tears blurred your vision and you quickly made your way out of the library, using the farthest exit so they wouldn’t spot you.
Only one thing replayed in your head: Semi was still in his dorm.
Your legs moved on their own accord as you made your way to the boys dormitory. At this point you had been a pro at evading the hall monitors and you easily snuck in. The next thing you knew, you were standing in front of Semi’s dorm and knocking.
He swung the door open, his neutral face turning into one of worry when he saw your tear-stained face.
”(F/—“
He couldn’t get your name out before you were pulling him towards you, lips crashing against his. You then pushed him back into his room, shutting the door behind the two of you.
You broke the kiss briefly to pull your shirt over your head, and Semi decided to take this as his opportunity to figure out what was wrong.
”(F/N), why are you crying—“
His mouth fell shut at the glare you sent him once you had your shirt off— he had never seen you like this before.
”Ushijima doesn’t and will never like me and Tendou figured out we’re fucking, so right now I need you to make me forget everything.”
His eyes widened, “Wha— how—?”
”It doesn’t matter,” you muttered, going to close the distance between you two again, but he gripped your jaw, holding you back.
”We’re supposed to be going to the library, they’re gonna notice we’re both gone.”
”Does it even matter?” You snapped, “Tendou told Ushijima anyway.”
Semi looked conflicted but you could see he was going to give in.
”Fine,” he relented, “But Reon might come in to check on me if I’m not down there soon, so we’re doing this quick.”
”Whatever— just fuck me already Eita.”
His jaw clenched as he shook his head, “You’re fucking ridiculous.”
With that he was pulling you towards his bed.
—
What happened then was a series of unfortunate coincidences that played out back to back.
First it was when Tendou had been too loud down in the library.
The second was when the librarian kicked the three of them out because of the noise.
The third was Reon suggesting that they go back to his dorm to study, since Semi was already there and they agreed to just send you a text.
And then you didn’t acknowledge when your phone vibrated with a text from Ushijima.
The last was when the three boys walked in on the middle of Semi fucking you.
Their reactions all differed at the scene in front of them. Reon turned away wide eyed, Tendou grinned widely because he was right, and Ushijima stood frozen.
There were a few moments before you and Semi realized you had an audience and scrambled to cover yourselves up.
And Ushijima was sure those few moments were going to be engrained in his head for a very long time.
He was also sure the way his stomach turned and heart sank would accompany the memory every time he thought of it.
Because the sight of your legs tossed over Semi’s shoulders while he fucked you, the way your face screwed up in pleasure, eyes shut, eyebrows furrowed and mouth slack as a high pitched moan of Semi’s name left your lips. Well— it was not going to be easy to forget.
Hours later when everyone was back in their own dorms and Ushijima finally had enough time to figure out why the image of you with another man rattled him so deeply, he finally admitted it.
“I like (F/N).”
And Tendou grinned.
