Chapter 2 - Belgium
It's been two days since the encounter between Dalia and Lando, and she couldn't shake off the memory of their meeting. Somewhere between fascination and regret, she couldn't help but feel like she may have come off too strong with her emotional opinions. She worried that she might have scared him off, not wanting to be seen as just another crazy fan. But in the end, she realized it didn't matter what he thought of her, since they won't simply meet again. She stared at the blank computer screen in front of her. She knew she had a deadline to meet, and she couldn't afford to let distractions get in the way. Sportsrace, a successful online sports channel, was owned by Olivia Abebe, a 45-year-old Nigerian British entrepreneur. Starting as a journalist, she had worked her way up to owning her own company. The team was small but efficient, with Dalia handling digital content, Henry and Noah taking care of shooting and editing, and Olivia being the face of the channel, conducting interviews and directing. Other services were outsourced to freelance agencies.
Olivia warmly greeted everyone with a "Good morning" before leading the way into the meeting room. As Dalia and Noah joined her, Olivia couldn't help but notice Henry's absence. Concerned, she asked, "Where's Henry?" Dalia quickly explained that he was still on sick leave, a fact that Olivia had overlooked when signing his leave request. Olivia panicked, realizing he was having surgery. "Relax, he'll be fine, it's just an appendix surgery," Noah said nonchalantly. "What are we going to do? We have to cover this weekend's F1 race!" Olivia announced. The two colleagues were stunned by the unexpected news, their eyes widening as they sat up straight in their seats. Their small company had never even dreamed of being able to join the prestigious journalists at an F1 grand prix. Olivia shared that she had received an invitation from the F1 communication department for them to cover the Belgium race weekend. If they performed well, there was a chance for future invitations. As Noah, a huge F1 fan, excitedly jumped around, Dalia couldn't shake the feeling that perhaps Lando had a hand in this incredible opportunity. "Alright everyone, let's keep it together", Noah exclaimed with a spark in his eye. "It's all under control. Dalia, you've got the mics covered, and I'll assist you every step of the way. Trust me, we've got this. Right?" Noah's determination was contagious, Dalia couldn't help but nod in agreement. "Great! then I'll take care of everything else" he continued.  Little did she know, she was about to see Lando again sooner than she expected.
As the sun rose on Thursday morning, the small team assembled at the paddock entrance, ready to begin their day. Noah handed out cameras to Olivia and Dalia, assigning them to cover different entrances to capture the arrival of the drivers. Dalia made her way to the other door, passing by the Mclaren hospitality area. She quickened her pace, hoping to avoid a certain someone she didn't want to run into. Upon reaching the rear entrance, Dalia encountered two journalists eagerly waiting. One of them graciously offered to help her adjust the camera settings. Engaging in a friendly chat with them, Dalia was able to momentarily forget about the cold morning and instead enjoy the chance to interact with new individuals and hear about their adventures in the dynamic realm of motorsport.
In just a few minutes, someone caught the attention of a journalist who excitedly exclaimed, "Look, there's one!" as he prepared his camera. From afar, she spotted a bright red top and a group of fans trailing behind, signaling the arrival of one of the Ferrari drivers. Quickly raising her camera, she began snapping photos as the driver approached. It was Carlos Sainz, and he appeared to be in a rush. As a bigginner photographer, she made the mistake of not moving out of his way, resulting in a slight collision. "I am so sorry," they both exclaimed in surprise. The camera knocked against her upper nose, causing her to instinctively reach up to massage it. "Are you okay?" he inquired, pointing to her nose. "Yes, I'm fine, don't worry," she assured him with a wide smile before allowing him to continue on his way. He cast one final concerned glance at her before hurriedly making his way towards the hospitalities, followed by a crowd of fans. While carefully inspecting the camera to ensure its safety, she spotted a wallet lying on the ground. Upon picking it up, she discovered Carlos' driver's pas. Their collision might have caused the item to fall from his back pocket. Dalia found herself in a dilemma, torn between returning Carlos Sainz's lost wallet or missing out on other drivers' arrival. After a moment of uncertainty, she decided to follow her conscience and chased after the crowd. As she caught sight of his distinctive red shirt disappearing into the hospitality area, she realized he was heading towards the McLaren building - a place she had been intentionally avoiding all morning.
The lack of security at the hospitality was surprising, with no bodyguards or staff at the entrance to monitor who entered. It was almost too easy to walk in. Perhaps her media badge gave her an air of legitimacy. As she wandered through the empty corridor, she couldn't help but question if this was normal. Shouldn't there be a bustling cafeteria or lounge? Lost in thought, she was startled by a stern voice behind her, "You're not authorized to be here," she turned around to face the intense gaze of none other than Oscar Piastri. His eyes, half-closed and intimidating, slowly shifted down to her badge before meeting her gaze once more. "This area is strictly for drivers," he stated with a dry, cold tone. Dalia suddenly realized she had wandered into the drivers' rooms area. "I apologize, I must have lost my way," she said, feeling her face flush. It was a dangerous place to be, especially when trying to avoid Lando. "Here," she pushed the wallet towards Oscar, who stood unfazed. "Carlos lost his wallet, and I wanted to return it after seeing him walk through here." "Hmm, yes, he must be in Lando's room," Oscar explained, gesturing towards the door behind her. A cold sweat ran through her body at the thought of him being so close. She reached for Oscar's hand, placed the wallet in it, and hurried back towards the exit.
After a couple of moments of navigating through the building, Dalia discovered the cafeteria, bringing a sense of relief. She confidently approached the counter and requested a refreshing cold cup of tea to calm her nerves. Finding an unoccupied table, she settled in with a sigh of relief. After a brief moment of composing herself, Oscar approached Dalia and sat beside her, catching her off guard. "I wanted to apologize," he confessed, fiddling with the wallet. "I realized I may have been a bit too harsh earlier, and you were just trying to help." He spoke without making eye contact. Dalia paused to process his words, then timidly reached out to pat his shoulder with a smile, showing her acceptance of his apology. "Have you not handed him the wallet yet?" she glanced at his hand. Oscar hesitated for a moment before replying, " Carlos is with him, didn't want to disturb." Oscar's voice was soft as he continued to look down at the wallet, almost as if he was concealing his emotions. However, Dalia could sense it. The tension between the two teammates may still exist, but from her last encounter with Lando, she could tell that Oscar genuinely cares about him. He's making an effort to connect, but he's afraid of how Lando might react. "well" She hesitated before speaking, realizing she was delving into a topic she had been avoiding. "You have a better understanding of Lando than I do," she said, meeting his gaze. "The incident during the last Grand Prix wasn't his fault, or yours. He knows that. I believe he will eventually move past it... He just needs some time to come to terms with everything," Dalia tried to present a neutral perspective. "So, do you think I should put in more effort?" he asked, with curiosity and innocence, revealing a side of him that contradicted his cold intimidating public persona. It was a rare glimpse of his socially awkward side, showing genuine concern for his teammate. She smiled in response, and he reciprocated the gesture. "Okay, Miss Dalia," he declared as he got up. "I'll go take my chances. And if he ever feels like punching me, I'll make sure to blame you for it," he teased before making his way to the rooms section.
The two practice sessions were a success, with Lando setting the fastest time and Carlos and Oscar close behind. Dalia had the opportunity to capture photos and videos for their online pages, as well as conduct brief interviews with celebrities and staff, all with Noah's guidance. She was truly enjoying herself and felt reinvigorated in her chosen profession. After a long day of work, the team gathered at a coffee shop near the Ferrari Hospitality to have a very late lunch. "I have some great news for you all," Olivia announced excitedly after taking a bite of her ridiculously overpriced chicken sandwich. "I've secured an interview with the McLaren drivers." As Dalia listened, her heart started racing. "We'll be interviewing Lando and Oscar in about two hours, so I need everyone to be prepared." The rest of lunch was spent coordinating and organizing, and Dalia barely ate anything as she became increasingly nervous with each passing minute.
By 7 pm, the team had already settled into a private room within the Mclaren building, diligently setting up for the interview under Noah's direction. Dalia expertly adjusted the lights and arranged the microphones. Suddenly, a group of Mclaren staff entered, with Olivia in tow, causing Dalia's nerves to resurface. Despite her anxiety, she composed herself, took a deep breath, and stood confidently next to Noah, warmly greeting everyone. Oscar was the first to arrive, flashing her a charming smile as he walked past. Soon after, the man who had been on her mind for days entered the room. His presence was magnetic, drawing everyone's attention towards him. With his suit hanging on his hips, messy hair, and a black bottle in hand, he exuded an air of confidence. His eyes met hers with a knowing look, as if he had anticipated her exact location. Casually greeting Olivia and Noah, he finally stood in front of Dalia, offering a simple "Hi" accompanied by a playful smile.
Dalia's heart raced as she felt the tension in the room rising, why was he affecting her like this? Summoning her courage, she stole a glance and found his gaze locked on her, just like the first time they met. With a deep breath, she finally reached for the microphones and made her way towards the two drivers. Choosing to start with Lando, she stood before him with a smile, her hands trembling slightly as she reached for his shirt collar. "May I...may I put the mic on the hem of your shirt?" she asked, avoiding his eyes. "Yes, you may," he replied with a chuckle in his usual playful tone. " I want to thank you " Dalia expressed, breaking the silence. "I believe you played a role in our media invitation." She glanced up to see a warm smile on his face. He simply nodded in acknowledgment of her appreciation. "So, where are you staying?" His question caught her off guard, causing her thoughts to race. She felt her heart pounding and did her best not to show her flustered state. "We...we booked an Airbnb not too far from the track," she nervously replied. "Well...I would like to invite you for dinner," he added with a smile. "As a token of gratitude for that delicious carrot cake you brought me last time." He smiled, closing the distance slightly. Dalia was visibly embarrassed and couldn't find the words to respond. After finishing fixing his mic and preparing to move on to Oscar, he whispered softly for her ears only, "I'll text you." But how could he? He didn't even have her number. Then again, if he could arrange an invitation to an F1 grand prix for her company, she was certain he could easily obtain her contact information.
"So ,I see you didn't get punched eventually" Dalia teased, a sense of relief evident in her posture. "You're lucky I didn't," Oscar replied with a warm smile, "But it looks like you weren't as fortunate." He reached out to gently touch the top of her nose, concern in his eyes. "It's from earlier when I accidentally bumped into Carlos with my camera. Is it red?" Dalia inquired, unfazed by his touch. "Yes, slightly," he replied softly, brushing his finger over her nose. "Ice will help prevent any further swelling. Trust me, I'm an expert in ice baths," he quipped, eliciting a small laugh from Dalia. As she turned to resume her position behind the camera, she couldn't resist stealing a glance at Lando, who was now giving them a dark, mysterious look. Taken aback by his sudden change in demeanor, Dalia quickly returned to Noah's side and signaled for Olivia to begin her interview.
By the time they returned to the rented flat, they were all completely drained. Luckily, the place had two showers, so they didn't have to wait for their turn. When Noah suggested ordering food, Dalia's phone buzzed with a notification. "Hey, It's Lando," she read the message that appeared on the screen.
D: Hi lando how are you ?
L: I'm good, so when can I come by to pick you up ?
He appeared eager to skip the small talk. Dalia quickly reassessed her feelings about the situation before picking up the phone to respond.
D: 10 pm sounds good, However I have one condition.
L: ??
D: Let's forget the fancy restaurant, and go somewhere more casual. And please don't come picking me up with a fancy car. Something discreet will be nice.
L: Oh I get it now. You don't want to be seen with me.
D: I'm sorry but I can't afford to risk my job.
He stayed silent for a bit, before he started tying again.
L: I'll come pick you up in 20 mins. See yah.

Celebrating Tiwa Savage's Enduring Legacy
Tumblr media
Tiwa Savage is past a decade into her time in Nigerian music, and while it remains a fast-moving industry where today's success does not guarantee tomorrow's, there are a few who have applied enough consistency to remain in Nigeria's upper echelons for extended periods. Names like Wizkid and Davido are more often referenced under the subject of longevity at the top flight, but Tiwa Savage's quality of talent, her knowledge of the taste palate of the Nigerian audience, and her willingness and ability to adapt to changing music and publicity trends—incredibly important for our ever-evolving industry—should warrant a level of recognition that is at least on par with these stars. Throw in Nigeria's conservative, patriarchal system that tries to tell women what they can or cannot do, and the extent of success they can achieve with it, and her story takes on an added significance.
The first few years at the start of the 2010's were, in retrospect, some of the most critical in Nigerian music's history. While many will point to the last few years as Nigeria's more visible epoch, many of the artists that have brought us so much glory made their introductions between 2010 and 2013. At the turn of the decade, Tiwa Savage was a member of this contingent, returning to Nigeria after a long spell in the UK and USA spent acquiring an education. Having featured as a back-up artist to stars like Mary J. Blige and George Michael, studied Jazz at the Berklee College Of Music in Boston, USA and gotten a Grammy nomination as a co-writer on Fantasia's Back To Me album, her credentials and ability were effectively beyond doubt, so what remained to be seen was her adaptation of a foreign-honed skill set into Nigeria's characteristically turbulent Afropop production.
Her first single posed to dispel these doubts, as the exuberant "Kele Kele Love" put silky, heartstrung writing into Afropop's percussion driven soundscape, so while her vocals and writing were evocative of more exotic locations and their influence, her use of pidgin and yoruba pulled the track closer to home. Its reception was rapturous, and love for Tiwa and her debut single poured in from across Nigeria. With "Love Me, Love Me, Love Me", she sought a recreation of this impact, and she achieved it by sticking to many aspects of the original that had made it so accepted. So as a rejection of half-hearted commitment from a partner morphed into a plea for more affection from a lover, form slightly while the substance of passion-laden pop remained unaltered.
Up until this time, while song performances were fast shifting her status from newcomer to Afropop queen, a lot was still left to be done on the management side of things before she could ascend this throne. Her management in 2011 was split between 323 entertainment (co-owned with her husband) and the Cecil Hammond–owned Flytime Promotion, but for the next big step, she would need the backing of a larger label, and we now know Don Jazzy's Mavins would provide this stepping stone. But before that label update came, the pair first linked up on Tiwa's "Without My Heart", her last single of a very packed, wildly successful debut year. For the December release she dived even deeper into her feelings, and returned with what was her most tender side yet. Her partner was an even more important part of the song, and although 'artist' is the least used of Don Jazzy's many titles, he sported enough chemistry with Tiwa to soften the surprise when he eventually picked her up for his newly formed Supreme Mavin Dynasty (or Mavins) the following year.
At Mavins, Tiwa joined forces with Don Jazzy himself, Dr. Sid, D'prince and Wande Coal. All male artists with a lot more years spent in the field, but if she was at all intimidated, she did not show it. She was, after all, two years into her time in a male dominated industry, and even that had not put a stop to her meteoric rise. Her first contribution as a Mavin artist, and indeed the first release from any new member of the label, was the group album, Solar Plexus. The LP debuted to mixed reviews, with many faulting the little time taken to prepare it, and while it couldn't rise beyond its weaknesses, Tiwa Savage was an  obvious bright spark on the Solar Plexus, and a sign that she bore a lot of potential ready to be tapped by Mavins.
Her solo album, Once Upon A Time, brought this to fulfilment in 2013; it was an especially strong debut indulgent in the electric, sugary pop she had made her forté. And despite demand and supply having decide this to be the safest and most rewarding soundscape to operate in, she for made room too, for a Rihanna-sequel reggaeton take on crime and murder ("Wanted") and Yoruba RnB musings on loss and grief ("Olorun MI"), and performances like these helped embellish what was already a superb love-laced debut.
But it was not exactly smooth sailing for the singer, especially against the currents of a patriarchal society keen to police womens bodies—where an audience comfortable with male artists using female vixens for their videos throw a fit when women take control of their sexuality in similar scenes. So while religious and cultural discussions were thrown up, discerning eyes always knew these reactions to be of purely misogynistic origins.
While whispers of indecency had hung in the air after the release of "Kele Kele Love" and "Love Me" videos, these did not coalesce to become popular controversy until "Wanted" made its video debut in 2014. Tiwa Savage was the sole star there, turning out in a nude bodysuit that only obscured her most private areas, and as she spent the video's 3-and-a-half minute runtime dancing lasciviously in a performance that was delivered with every intention to seduce, reactions to the video's debut were predictably sexist. Most commenters cycled through the expected tropes—comparing her to a sex worker, branding her Un-african, and, of course, throwing her marriage in her face like it was some slave contract. But Tiwa was unfazed. She might not have had her coming-of-age in the country, but she knew enough of Nigeria's close minded hypocrisy to have anticipated such a response, and she was happy to accentuate an underreported ill many women still suffer.
Her personal life would come to the fore again in an even more prominent way in 2016, when cracks first began to appear in her marriage to Tunji Balogun, her husband of two years and business partner of longer. In a messy episode first started by Tunde on Instagram before Tiwa responded 24 hours later via a Thisday interview, the couple took turns hurling accusations of infidelity, financial impropriety and even witchcraft at each other. They held things together for a further two years, probably out of consideration to the child and record label they shared, but a permanent split was thought to have been effected sometime in 2018.
Back in the studio she continued in spotless form. She released her sophomore album, R. E. D., in 2015, and its title—Romance, Expression, Dance—was a fine summation. The album saw Tiwa Savage glide through a more diverse soundscape, but one that was always kept danceable and sexy. Her improved status in the industry was represented in its features, as she was able to call on names like 2face, Wizkid and P Square (for the deluxe) to great results, allowing Don Jazzy some rest as he only had a single contribution to make this time around.
Her love and adeptness for finding and executing the right collaborations must not go without mention. Her passionate delivery makes her the perfect foil for romantic anthems, and it ensured early in her career that she was kept busy trading lines with male artists like Flavour ("Oyi" remix), Patoranking ("Girlie O" remix), Wizkid ("Bad"), Sean Tizzle (Igi Orombo), Kizz Daniel ("Woju" remix) and more. With these, she leveraged on the popularity of (then) bigger stars, smartly helping to raise her own profile in a male-centric industry, and providing substance to her claim to Nigerian pop's queenship.
After the success of 2020's Celia, the buoyant, socially-aware album named after her mother, her most recent project, 2021's Water And Garri allowed her to collaborate more with female artists as well, a decision that came to pay off heavily when Somebody's Son (ft. Brandy) came to national fame. The EP also carried another female vocalist, Amaarae, the Ghanaian songstress whose effort on "SAD GIRLS LUV MONEY" had placed her in the frontlines of the Afrobeats to the world movement. And even now that her position in Nigerian music is incontestable, Tiwa Savage continues to find tracks on which she can keep up with emerging sounds and artists of the industry. She collaborated with Asake for "Loaded', a single that capped a perfect 2022 for the Street Pop act and allowed Tiwa an entry into the Fuji-Amapiano zone he operated in. In 2023 she has shared credits with Majeed, Spyro, and most recently, Young Jonn and Ayra Starr, and with collaborations like this she can obtain perpetuity, welcoming a new generation of artists and subsequently, audiences, to her discography.
In an industry where Tiwa Savage has already more than doubled the average artist's career span, there may be some who will pose questions about just how much longer she can keep going at this level, but these doubts are no much different in substance from those that stood in her way at her arrival, only that time they took the form of her gender and sexuality. A combination of blistering talent, fierce expressiveness and smart collaborative effort should ensure Nigeria's queen of pop can extend her dominance for much longer.

PARIS — Paris continues to radiate excitement following the summer Olympics, and recently hosted another grand event: the BoF 500 Gala. This prestigious gathering, held at the opulent Shangri-La Hotel, brought together a multitude of industry stalwarts—designers, business leaders, image makers, and content creators—to celebrate the new class of talent entering the BoF 500, the ultimate index of influential figures in global fashion. As fashion insiders arrived on a crisp autumn evening, they were greeted by a breathtaking view of the Eiffel Tower. The atmosphere buzzed with energy, as 100 new additions to the BoF 500 were honored, showcasing the diverse array of individuals helping shape the fashion landscape. The red carpet sparkled with high-profile attendees including designers Victoria Beckham and Phoebe Philo, acclaimed reggaeton artist J Balvin, and Gap’s new creative director Zac Posen. Each guest arrived dressed to impress, with bold fashion statements making it clear that this was a night to remember. Beckham herself noted, “There’s a lot of strong, bold fashion statements here tonight, it’s nice to see.” Among the notable looks, Hari Nef, Jared Leto, and Colman Domingo ascended the marble stairs in striking new ensembles from the eagerly awaited Valentino collection under Alessandro Michele. Loewe ambassadors Greta Lee and Ayo Edebiri showcased pieces from Jonathan Anderson’s Friday runway show. Adding to the evening's allure, French musician Yseult sported a sculptural couture trench from Balenciaga, setting the stage for an event that celebrated creativity and individuality. The galas, much like the fashion industry itself, thrive on connectivity. Guests exchanged warm greetings and shared stories over sumptuous meals artistically arranged on emblems of freshness, marking a gathering where past influences converged with emerging talent. The mingling was a reminder of the industry's communal spirit, which stands resilient despite the challenges of a divided world. Addressing the attendees, BoF founder and chief executive Imran Amed emphasized the importance of unity: “A moment when we’re all united is so important when the world feels so divided.” This sentiment resonated strongly throughout the evening and set the tone for the celebrations to follow. Highlighting the cultural integration within the event, Nigerian Afrobeats star Wizkid took the stage, performing his globally popular tracks “Ojuelegba” and “Essence”—the latter being the first Nigerian song to chart on the Billboard Hot 100. Dressed in a chic Chanel ensemble, Wizkid's performance encapsulated the fusion of music and fashion that is becoming increasingly significant within the industry. Reflecting on the event's importance, guests from previous BoF 500 classes shared their thoughts on being part of such a distinguished community. Model Ashley Graham remarked, “Just knowing that you are part of history, that you have done a great service to the fashion industry, and that you’re recognized for it — what an honor.” New members of the BoF 500 overflowed with enthusiasm at their inclusion. Italian singer and Diesel ambassador Damiano David expressed his surprise: “When I got the news I actually thought: ‘What? Me?'. I was surprised because I’m a singer; I did not expect that.” David admitted he was even more taken aback by his BoF 500 selection than when he won Eurovision in 2021 as frontman of Måneskin. Zac Posen, stepping into his role as Gap’s creative director earlier this year, echoed similar sentiments of excitement: “I’ve actually never been to this event [before], I’ve never been part of The Business of Fashion… but some things are worth waiting for,” reinforcing the significance of the BoF 500 recognition. Such gatherings spotlight not just individual achievements but the collective impact of diverse voices in fashion. They provide a platform for dialogue and collaboration—a necessary foundation for shaping the future of the industry. The
BoF 500 Gala is supported by esteemed partners including Chase Sapphire Reserve, NEFT, Shop With Google, The Shangri-La Hotel, and La Mode en Images, marking it as an affair not just for celebration but for serious industry networking and partnership opportunities. As the evening drew to a close, attendees departed with renewed energy and inspiration, armed with fresh connections and the thrill of being part of an influential movement. With fashion constantly evolving, events like the BoF 500 Gala demonstrate that the industry stands resilient, ready to embrace new horizons. This year’s BoF 500 serves as a reminder that fashion is more than just clothing; it is a culture, a platform for expression, and increasingly a shared experience that unites people from all walks of life who are passionate about the world of style.

WHY YOUR CHILDREN DON'T READ
There has always been this notion that Indians don't read. In fact, to aggravate this monumental insult, it has also been posited that if you want to keep information(knowledge) from Africans, you should hide it in a book!
What an efforts and a pity at the same time. But, let's be honest with ourselves, is the above true or not?
When was the last time you read a book? If a life saving or wealth generating information has been hidden in a book in the last three months, would you have got it?
Whatever your answer is, matters. It just might be the reason why your children don't read too.
Reading is one of the best mental exercises which does not just boost academic performance, but engender long term mental alertness.
Also, apart from the many obvious clichés about reading such as: "A reader is a leader",
"The more you read the more you lead"...
...or "You start dying when you stop reading"; reading completes our 'individual humanity' in a way that it can't be explained.
When you read you keep yourself open to reality. You become universal in disposition and that stands you out.
The big which now is, with all the advantages ascribed to reading, why are our children not reading?
Well, as a teacher of over ten years, a member of a family and recently a father; I shall share some of my experience on the subject.
REASONS CHILDREN DON'T READ
A DISCOURAGING HOME ARRANGEMENT:
When you enter the house of most typical Nigerians, you observe a gigantic flat screen TV, sometimes bought with the mindset of oppressing neighbours.
Stylish, good colour separation techniques and VERY LOUD too.
You would also observe a 'shake the roof sound system' with other good things in life too.
You hardly would see a study! In some cases, you won't even see a single book kept in the open. What does that say to your children? I will tell you. It clearly says, 'READING IS NOT ENCOURAGED or ALLOWED HERE, YOU CAN ALWAYS RELAX AND WATCH TELEVISION!
Did you just try to convince yourself that children read in their rooms? And do you actually believe that? Let's even pretend that they do, how conducive is the reading space?
So you still believe that your child's bed is a good reading sport? In this century?
You need to wake up!
A POOR REWARD SYSTEM:
It's a known fact that, some of you reading this article right now, in this very space could only attain the educational qualifications you have because of a scholarship (s) or sponsorship from schools or individuals at some point.
Some people would have remained Stark Illiterate but for such an opportunity. But, what do we see today? Scholarship is 'officially classified as part of the nation's past glories, just like every other good thing ordinary Nigerians lack.
School owners, including those who became so due to scholarship have become more interested in profits making to the extent of extorting parents in some cases, without thinking of giving back.
Some who claimed to give scholarship only used it as a marketing strategy to get more students.
They will place the cut off mark so high that at the end, no student is able to have that score. What a shame!
How then do you want students to read?
The same school will do everything possible to ensure that students pass their exams and are prompted to the next class just to impress parents to keep their children there. This leave no distinction between the hard working students and the 'policy favoured students' who then see no need to work hard.
How about our homes? What value do we place on education?
Parents respect and adore children who bring back money and materials (even without knowing or questioning the source), more than those who bring excellent results.
Post-covid19 education review posited that about 1.2million or so children dropped from school. One of the major reasons for that was because students started a petty business which churned in money in huge profits. So, what then was the need to go back to school when staying out of school means more money for the struggling family?
If this is applauded as it were, why will the children in school want to read?
As if this is not enough, our higher institutions are always happy to present a plaque and Rs 50,000 to First Class Graduates or to graduates who won all the departmental awards ( as was the case with the Unilorin female graduate who won all the departmental awards in her school).
These same institutions would rather lobby to employ a third class graduate who is 'connected' than a first class graduate with requisite skills and qualifications.
If excellence is no longer celebrated, why would students read?
LACK OF LIBRARIES IN OUR SCHOOLS:
Most schools don't have functional libraries why some don't have them at all. For those that have, there is a common trend now. Once there is a need for expansion due to population explosion, the library and ICT room is quickly converted to a classroom and the books taken to the principal's office.
Once this happens in some schools, that is the end of a library and an ICT room in the school.
How will students read?
Even those with well-stacked libraries, do your timetables reflect library and reading periods?
Oh, you are thinking about it?
Ok, so now that you are done thinking, did you include library reading time in your timetable or is the library just there for government officials inspection?
How about you that conveniently positioned your beautiful library next to the 'noise proof' generator house?
Is that your own way of encouraging reading?
Think about it again.
STRESS AND FATIGUE ON CHILDREN:
I hope you are not expecting me to be the one to tell you that children equally go through stress as you do? Well, I just did!
Stress and Fatigue is also responsible for poor reading. Most often than not, and badly so, parents choices of schools are based on their convenience rather than the child's academic and health's needs.
This means that ( using Lagos for example), a parent who lives on the mainland and works on the island will rather choose a school on the island which is closer to his/her office to allow for pickup and drop off, rather than a school on the mainland.
When this happens, and to beat traffic, the child is made to leave home as early as 4am or 5am and return at 7pm or 8pm in some cases.
For a child who needs a minimum of 8 hours sleep for a proper mental and psychological growth and development, waking up and going to bed at those times will deprive him/her of at least 3 hours of sleep every night.
Please ask a doctor for the health implications.
Without talking further, you should know by now that there is no way such a child would read, especially at home; not even on weekends. He or she would be stressed out and Fatigue!
RECOMMENDATIONS TO HELP YOUR CHILD READ
Create a STUDY at home:
Get a simple table and chairs. If you can't have them reading every day, fix a compulsory reading day and time.
For a better result, be part of this routine and you will be glad you did.
Children reading or studying on their beds should be discouraged.
Reword Excellence:
When I was in primary school, my uncle would give whoever came first between me and my cousin Margaret a full roasted chicken. He will make sure that the other person doesn't eat part of it for any reason.
This single simple act kept us studying hard so we could eat the chicken.
Try to reward your children. When you do, don't wait till the end of the term only, do it in+between the terms as well. It paschim further.
Build Class libraries:
If you lack space for a big library, improvise with a class library. They work wonders and are easy to set up. To do this, collaborate with your students and teachers.
Imagine you have 15 students in a class, if each of them donate at least a book in a term, you will have at least 45 books at the end of a session, in each class.
This single act will not only build a library, it will also teach children the importance of books and of giving.
Let your child's needs come first when school-hunting.:
Choose a school that makes it easier for the child to go and return without wasting quality time on the road or lose sleep.
So, the next time you criticize your child for not reading as you often do make sure you are not guilty of the same thing.

The Concussion Movie
Tumblr media
In Concussion, Will Smith steps into the role of Dr. Bennet Omalu, a brilliant Nigerian-American forensic pathologist who exposes a disturbing truth about the NFL in the early 2000s. The film is based on real events and was inspired by an investigative piece called “Game Brain,” published in GQ in 2009. Directed by Peter Landesman, it brings to light the dangerous long-term effects of repeated head trauma experienced by professional football players—something that, until then, had largely been ignored.
The story kicks off in 2002, following the tragic death of former Pittsburgh Steelers player Mike Webster. After years of self-mutilation and homelessness, Webster dies under mysterious circumstances. Dr. Omalu performs the autopsy and discovers shocking signs of brain degeneration, caused by years of taking hits on the field. Omalu coins the term chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) to describe the condition, which could explain the disturbing behavior exhibited by many former players.
Despite publishing his findings, Omalu faces fierce opposition from the NFL, an organization unwilling to acknowledge any connection between football and brain trauma. As the film unfolds, Omalu's research brings to light similar stories from other players like Justin Strzelczyk, Terry Long, and Andre Waters—football stars whose lives unraveled in eerily similar ways.
The NFL’s refusal to accept the science puts Omalu in the crosshairs. He’s harassed, pressured to give up, and even threatened with deportation. But, despite all odds, Omalu persists. His tireless efforts force the NFL to finally confront the issue of concussions and CTE, resulting in players suing the league for not warning them of the risks.
At its core, Concussion is a gripping story about one man’s mission to protect athletes from the hidden dangers of a sport that millions love. Will Smith's portrayal of Dr. Omalu earned him a Golden Globe nomination, and the film itself shines a light on an issue that continues to be relevant today.
The movie concludes with a somber reminder: in 2012, Junior Seau, a famous NFL player, also took his own life due to CTE. His death and the subsequent lawsuits by former players solidify Omalu's research as a turning point in sports safety.
Whether you're a football fan or not, Concussion is a powerful film that challenges us to look beyond the game and understand the true cost of fame, glory, and athletic success.

Juju and Nigerian Football: Spells and Superstition on the Pitch
At the heart of Nigerian football, where passion for the ball is rivaled only by devotion to mysticism, Juju, a system of beliefs and spiritual practices deeply rooted in African culture, plays a surprising role. For many Nigerians, success on the pitch depends not only on skill, tactics or training, but also on supernatural interventions that can determine the outcome of a match. This confluence of sport and spirituality reveals how football, the country’s most popular sport, is intertwined with traditional practices that date back centuries.
Juju’s Influence on Football
Juju, with its deep roots in African spirituality, involves invoking spiritual forces to achieve certain goals, be it protection, luck or even the destruction of one’s enemies. In the context of football, this practice manifests itself in a variety of ways, from pre-match rituals to the wearing of talismans and amulets by players.
In Nigerian football, it is common to hear stories of players and coaches turning to witch doctors and healers to cast spells to guarantee victories or to break a team’s bad luck. These rituals can range from applying potions to goal posts to prevent the ball from going in, to performing dances and chants that are supposed to invoke protective spirits.
For many players and fans, Juju is not just a superstition, but an integral part of the sport’s strategy. Belief in the power of these practices is so strong that, on some occasions, players refuse to enter the field without first undergoing a protective ritual.
Notorious Cases: When Juju Influences the Game
One of the most notorious episodes involving Juju in Nigerian football occurred during the 2002 Africa Cup of Nations. The Nigerian team was accused of using spells to ensure its victory. Reports claim that a local witch doctor was hired to perform rituals before the decisive matches, which supposedly helped the team advance to the semi-finals. However, the defeat in the finals was attributed to a breach of ritual protocol, such as failure to properly perform Juju practices before the final match. This incident sparked a heated debate in the country, with many football fans and commentators questioning the real impact of Juju on sporting performances. Another famous case involves a goalkeeper who refused to save a penalty kick because he believed the taker had cast a spell. The goalkeeper claimed that when he looked into the eyes of the opposing player, he felt his body being taken over by an invisible force, which paralyzed him and prevented him from acting. The Debate on Juju in Football The presence of Juju in Nigerian football raises complex questions about the intersection of tradition and modernity. For some, the use of Juju is seen as a throwback, a superstitious practice that has no place in the world of contemporary sport. Critics argue that reliance on mysticism can undermine the development of football in Nigeria by diverting attention from proper training, tactics and physical preparation.
On the other hand, proponents of Juju see these practices as a natural extension of Nigerian culture, where spirituality and everyday life are inextricably linked. For them, Juju is an expression of cultural identity and, in many cases, a source of confidence and strength for players.
Final Thoughts
Football in Nigeria is more than a game; it is a cultural manifestation that reflects the beliefs, hopes and challenges of society. The use of Juju in the sport is a reminder that even in a globalized world, local traditions continue to play a crucial role in people’s lives. As Nigerian football continues to evolve, the debate over the role of Juju on the field persists, revealing a fascinating tension between the modernity of sport and the richness of African spiritual practices. Ultimately, Juju in Nigerian football is a window into the soul of the country, where mysticism and sport meet, creating a unique narrative that defies the boundaries of what it means to compete and win.

Nigerian athletes only competed in sports with minimum investment in the Olympics, according to Seun Kuti
Tumblr media
The Nigerian government has come under fire from well-known artist Seun Kuti for failing to support sports. Seun responded to team Nigeria's dismal showing in the recently concluded 2024 Olympics in Paris in a social media video that went viral. The musician disclosed that Nigeria only took part in non-investment-requiring sports when promoting the 2024 Olympics. “I watched the Olympic games. look at how poorly we performed. How many sports are we competing in? I saw that it was only sports that did not need investment that Nigerians participated in. We only did sports that needed minimum investment. “You know, to play football, you need a ball, post and net and in some places, boys would use slippers to create a goalpost. But in sports that need things like rackets, basketball courts, rims and nets where you can’t easily improvise, we weren’t there. We competed in track and field events because it is easy to do running. But we are never in sports that need equipment. “Nigerians know all these sports and bet on them so how much would it take to create a good league and gift the winners 25 million dollars? Let there be a minimum of a million dollars per year, after all, this is what boys are earning in Europe. “Nigerians are unable to enjoy their children’s talents, all our big superstars. Which other shows do they play in Nigeria? I was watching the Olympics and I saw a lot of people with Nigerian sounding names doing incredible things for other countries. If Simone Biles can be that great, imagine how many talents that are wasting away because people will not invest in gymnastics and train our children.” Read the full article
