fury tolerated her interventions. sometimes she was useful for situations and it wasn't like he could stop her. the raft couldn't hold them. not at this age, this size. devani had fought hydra at it's conception they weren't about to bow because earthen laws thought regulations were more important than action. fury's vanishing in the snap had hurt. after the infiltration of shield and interstellar war, they'd found it safer to remain as removed as possible.
carol was an interesting situation. another given power not by birthright, something devani still held mixed opinion on. as long as they stayed relatively out of each other's way there wouldn't be a problem. except the whole sky didn't have enough room for both. it had to stop being coincidence by the second time. though it made sense to send powerful fliers to the same scene, there had to be more than just carol. half the time devani didn't even have to use any enhanced sense to find something going on. fury had no designated way of contacting her as she was pretty good at just showing up.
if he'd ratted them out they were going to burn everything he owned. no one was supposed to be able to make the connection between reptile and human shapes. there was a reason shapeshifting was saved for private places. when-if everyone was looking for white scales they wouldn't notice a mundane blond. that was the main purpose of getting a secondary form. or it's main use as dragons had no need for hands or weak bipedal bodies. what had once saved her life now provided an excellent disguise. even more so in a crowded world where people didn't look twice at each other.
except her. who had somehow either figured it out or been told. bright eyes narrow at the other, spine shifting minutely as if they still had wings to spread in a threat display. they're normally better at playing it cool, but this wasn't supposed to happen. they take in carol's breathing, her elevated heartrate, the slight flush to her cheeks. paired with the questions she was nervous-or excited. likely the latter. which would be cute, no it was she was, if devani wasn't completely caught off guard.
she didn't blink, third eyelid allowing her to cock head and stare. after several long moments in which carol did not attack she let shoulders relax just slightly. it wasn't the best or most secure location for such conversations. "um-well..." devani trailed off then snorted, shaking her head and regaining some sense of indignance. "wait. no. i'm not answering shit until you tell me if fury squealed. you've never seen me." not like this, as far as she knew. this form didn't go to fights.

carol looked away from the night sky towards the woman sitting next to her instead. she chuckled softly. "oh really?" she teased, eyebrows raised. only moments ago they had been talking about carol's next journey -- most of the time, she didn't know where she was going. she'd go into the sky, idle on her ship until she was called to help someone, then she'd be occupied with that. she never knew it if was going to be a battle, a political statement, or a natural disaster. when she'd absently commented on how next time she went up to wait, she'd pass through the ramaya galaxy; a beautiful cluster of stars that she loved to watch our her window as her ship coasted by. she had been debating between doing that and staying here for now; that had been the exact topic of conversation when valkyrie had spoken. "it's really beautiful," she continued, looking away from valkyrie for a brief moment towards the stars, as if she could see it. "light blue, a different shade than i've ever seen on earth. colours and stars as far as the eye can see. sometimes i just pass it to relax; but it's not a super active galaxy, so i don't normally have much to do there." she considered it. these days, carol felt like she was burning out a bit, not unlike the exact stars in the sky that she missed. she didn't take breaks that often anymore. most of the time, when she did force herself to take a break, she did so completely alone. it might be nice to have company, especially company like her, and -- oh god, she really hoped that she cleaned her ship up before inviting a beautiful woman in. "i'd love for you to join me, if you'd like," she continued, grinning at valkyrie, hoping her excitement showed more than her nerves did. both were pretty relevant right now. "it's only a few jump points away. i could have you back by tomorrow afternoon. whatever you'd like."
maybe she'd been watching a little too closely when carol had turned her head to gaze back up at the night sky as she described the stars and the beauty of the ramaya galaxy. carol wasn't someone who often let vulnerabilities or softer sides show, not to just anyone at least... but there was something about the look on her face, in her eyes while she was focusing on something that didn't involve being a hero, or having responsibilities that val couldn't help but be intrigued by.
and maybe her words had been a bit of a flirtatious joke - not something that she actually expected carol to take her up on, - she knew that she could be such a private person and that was completely fair... but when carol did extend the offer, the smile that tugged at her lips was nothing but genuine.
yes, she knew that now, being king of new asgard, she had responsibilities, and she couldn't always just run away at the drop of a hat. and yes, thor was no longer here, he'd taken himself away with love, after what had happened, after losing jane... and that was something valkyrie would never hold against him. - she knew what that pain, what that void felt like. at least he seemed to be trying to fill that void with something healthier than the bottom of a bottle like she had... but with all of that being said, after what had happened with gorr, she also had confidence in her people. they were strong, even the younger ones. they had all proven that.
" it would be nice to ditch the suit and tie, pretend i'm not king for a little while... if the captain permits, of course. " her last few words were accompanied by more of a playful hint to her smile.

mixed feelings, and lots of them. there was one thing buffy was SURE of, she didn’t like any of this. the watcher’s council was long behind her, something akin to a mere memory, one in which she was able to narrowly escape from. not unscathed. but buffy was promised this would be different. nick fury wouldn’t intervene, or tell her right from wrong, —- there would be no stepping into the role of substitute watcher. even the idea made buffy’s blood boil.
what if that was all it was in the end, just empty promises. wouldn’t be the first time.
doubts aside —- there were vampires that needed to be taken care of.
carol’s voice behind her was a stark reminder of that. newsflash buffy - vampires ! get out of your head. —- insane woman from space or something who has prettier hair than you ! (she could definitely do with a root touch up though.)
“ what a great question ! ” sarcasm is evident in her scorn. the eye roll that follows is almost involuntary. “ so like —- what happened to being an all knowing space soldier or whatever ? some questions ARE stupid, y’know. don’t care what they say. ” she didn’t need this - a glorified babysitter. could be that she just wasn’t accustomed to company. she had done this all alone for what felt like her whole life. all she had ever known. an ache in her chest, HOPE for normalcy buried six feet under. the irony wasn’t lost on her there.
yet, slayers were a dime a dozen now, so why did she still feel like this ? and why couldn’t she just focus ?!? “ look,” buffy bent slightly, acknowledging the strange cat at her feet. orange and lithe, soft features and definitely ...cute. weird place for a pet though, she thought.
buffy gestured towards the vamps still hidden from their eyeline, keeping her voice as low as possible. “ not sure how many. feels like at least ten. could be more. the way i see it —--- we either take them down now, or risk leaving for back up and come back to nothing. don’t know about you but i’m not thrilled about a bunch of vampires roaming around when the sun sets. they typically aren’t the ‘staying in for a movie and some popcorn’ type. this is the best chance we have. ”
eyeing carol up and down, buffy found herself asking questions. “ do you have a weapon ? or … something ? ” she's mindful of where she steps now, as they move closer.
truthfully, she just wanted to get it over with, but knew these things couldn't be rushed.
“ not sure how your magical alien powers work. here, i've got an extra. " fishing in her pocket, she held the wooden weapon out for carol to take — like a lifeline, or even maybe, a truce. she didn’t TRUST the woman, but maybe they could do this one thing together.

"'m a little sore, I guess, but um... fine. 's ok" Peter said, slowly sitting up with his back against the head of the bed. As he usually did after sleeping off a particularly nasty wound or, in this case, some sort of unknown venom, he felt groggy and a little unsteady. Sort of, he assumed, like being hungover. Not that he'd ever been popular enough before the bite to get invited to those sorts of parties and, based on a prank that Flash had tried to pull on the class European trip, alcohol didn't really seem to affect him anyways. Sipping at the cool glass of water, he rubbed at one of the stings. Yeah, sore but certainly not the worst he'd ever had.
"I'll be alright. I, um, heal pretty fast. And am not allergic to bees like I was when I was a kid. Not that those were exactly bees but uh... y'know."

@twinklefists asked: 🎁 ↳ ' sane ' - meet me @ the altar
" I thought that I could handle this, " Alex breathed out, the offering of surrender her companion seemed to lure from her a wire - thin one, a whiskey warmed one; a doleful one. Setting it all aside ( every good thing she'd never anticipated: every miracle, every other shoe that'd dropped thereafter ) wasn't so easy. " Just... forget the past — get over it. "

❛ are you asking me to dance? 'cause i kind of had my eye on that blonde at table eight. ❜ FOR NAT LOL
&. 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐩𝐢𝐞𝐜𝐞 (𝐥𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧) 𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬.
natasha wasn't sure how she'd ended up here, with carol, attempting to make small talk with the various other people that were seated around a table with them. if she was being honest with herself, she knew that she already could have been in and out with the intel she needed if she was alone. but here she was, swirling a dry white wine around in a glass as she surveyed the room around them. hearing carol's words, natasha looked over at her. a strand of red hair was tucked behind her ear as she responded. " is that supposed to make me jealous? or is that your twisted way of asking me to be your wing-woman? "
laughing gently, natasha moved to take a sip of her drink. despite her not exactly imagining her day ending up like this, she still didn't dislike the company she was with. carol was unexpected. she was not exactly the type of person she'd imagined herself on an undercover mission with, but she'd make the best of it while she could.
" come on, " natasha said, standing up and finishing off the rest of her drink. " let's finish what we came here for so you can keep making eyes at the blonde woman across the room. " with a beat, a teasing smile tugged ever so gently at the corner of her lips. " if she's a part of whatever's going on here and she tries to kill you once you get her alone, i'm definitely saying 'i told you so' in the morning. "

@twinklefists pressed the ♥
"Carol." Her tone loud enough to ensure she's got the attention of the other woman. "I should have started with how great it is to see you in person, but you can't blame me for assuming something terrible is about to happen." Hell, she would have loved to be doing anything other than worrying about the next threat that was going to fly out of the sky. "Unless you're going to tell me that you're finally here to take me up on my promise of splitting a peanut butter sandwich."

I'm supposed to be retired! It is the only thing spinning through Ally's head as she zig-zags through the air in her dark jeans and business casual tank top (her blazer and shoes were abandoned on the corner of 49th and 7th), the thought repeating itself over and over again. She doesn't want to say it out loud, make others think she's put upon by helping. It isn't that at all, in fact.
I'm retired. I'm retired. I'm retired.
She knocks an alien creature from the sky with an air blast, but she can see a bunch gathering about twenty feet ahead, all converging on a streak of blue, red, and gold.
"Captain Marvel!" Ally speeds up and throws out a string of currents to wrap around as many aliens as she can. With a grunt of effort, she pulls and throws them behind her, hopefully knocking them out against the side of a building. "Who are these guys? What do they want?"
Man, I missed this.

natasha didn't know what to expect from carol, really. from what she'd heard and seen, carol was quick to strike, quick to resort to means of solving something that didn't involve deception like this. and yet, as natasha watched her like this, she was honestly impressed by her actions. well, she wasn't sure how impressed she should be given that she'd already alluded to finding the blonde attractive, so how much of it really was playing a game and how much was her just truly flirting? maybe carol was better at putting on an act that natasha thought. there was a lot of the blonde that was a mystery -- it wasn't as if there were tons of opportunities for them to work together like this. they knew each other, sure, but not to any great length.
as natasha tried to focus on finishing her task, she couldn't help but let her focus slip to carol's conversation. she knew she needed to be focusing on her own surroundings. on figuring out if this woman was truly alone or if there was anyone around natasha that could see what she was doing. but at the same time, natasha knew that she was good at what she did. it wasn't as if she couldn't handle a simple planting of a device. it was something she could do in her sleep. but she wasn't going to screw this up, not such an easy task. seeing the wink from carol after her whole ... act ( which natasha wasn't even sure was really an act ) , natasha took a small step away from the bar, meeting carol part way.
as the blonde put her hand in her arm, natasha managed a soft laugh, shaking her head. " i knew you were a 'babe' person. " she said in a low voice once they were a few steps away from the other blonde, looking at carol with a small smirk that pulled at her lips. as the woman spoke, natasha nodded, simply looking at her as she spoke. " and did you just volunteer me for a threesome? " the question was paired with a raise of her brow. " because you know, you could have just asked. " there was a laugh that escaped her lips after her comment, her hand moving to touch carol's that was in her arm as they walked away from the bar slightly, putting distance between them and the other woman. it wasn't like she cared at all -- that much natasha hoped she was making clear with her body language.
" we'll start with her. see what we can get. i mean, i think if you spoke to her a second longer, she'd probably melt into a puddle on the floor, so i think you can get some information out of her very, very easily. " natasha looked at her then, allowing herself to take carol in. it was surprisingly .... nice being with her. working alone was easier, sure. but well, it wasn't like she'd get this kind of excitement on her own. if she was on her own doing this, she would have went right up to the group of men in suits near the office and talked her way into getting one alone before she'd turn off her act and get the information she needed. it would have been easy. she would have felt in her element. but maybe being out of her element was something she was learning not to hate.
" we have twenty minutes to spare, then. you want a drink for all of your hard work? because i may or may not have had a couple of shots while you were .... busy. " the tiny smirk returned back to natasha's lips. " so i think it's only fair that you also have a drink. you know, for courage. unless you're the goody two shoes type that won't have a few drinks on the job. " it was to blend in. or at least, it was a decent excuse. she could remember the day she'd submitted her expense report to shield for getting intel on someone -- the lecture fury had given her was enough entertainment for weeks.
" you're good at this, you know. i shouldn't be surprised, really. " she didn't know exactly what kind of vibe that carol gave off, but it wasn't like natasha had seen her fight, had seen her work, all that much. and it wasn't like natasha just fit into one mold either -- she'd seen and done plenty. she'd worked for shield for so long, but there was plenty she did off shield's radar that she'd kept secret for ages. " i'm impressed. you're full of more surprises than i thought. "
carol may not be a spy but she had picked up on the ability to look out of the corner in her eye to see what her companion was doing without giving her away. she watched natasha as she moved casually, with the practiced ease of a professional, and tried to resist the nagging voice in the back of her head that longed to know more about her, to understand how she had learned this stuff, it couldn't have been all shield's influence? but, she focused on the task at hand instead, which was the blonde who was leaning in closer to her to hear her better. if she got the device in, and maybe if she got the blonde alone, could she get more information out of her? would natasha be impressed by her? oh, sue her, she has a bit of an ego that needs maintaining sometimes.
"seemed like you were with somebody else," the blonde said, blinking at her from under her eyelashes. she was a bit shorter than carol, and admittedly beautiful; under different circumstances, maybe this would've led somewhere more private for the night. out of the corner of her eye again, she caught natasha's gaze -- stall her? she could do that. time to lay it on thick.
"not quite," carol replied, her voice dropping a tone as she put on her best flirty smirk. she shifted until one leg was off the stool, keeping a close eye on the blonde's body signals as she shifted to look a little taller. thankfully, the blonde reacted perfectly, her body moving to face away from the bar as carol subtly guided her with her eyes. "in fact, you might be able to help me with that..." she leaned in, her lips brushing the blonde's ear. if she was right, this was when she would be able to feel the blonde shiver at the closeness. yep, there it was. "we were just looking for a bit of fun."
when she pulled away, the blonde's pupils were dark, her gaze flitting between carol's eyes. she didn't notice natasha reach into her purse and then set her phone back down, but she did lean her head a bit to the side, towards natasha, as though she was going to look at her. suspecting this was about to backfire really badly, carol took a chance and placed her hand on the blonde's hip, distracting her. when the blonde looked back at her, she said: "what do you mean?"
carol looked down at this woman, momentarily forgetting about the situation around them as the sultry voice distracted her. her head tilted slightly as she studied the other woman's face. beautiful, indeed. eyes half lidded, she leaned in until their noses were brushing, lips barely apart. she waited for the blonde to do exactly what she expected: freeze, take a shaky breath, tentatively raise her hands to touch carol's arms, then finally try to lean in to close the distance. carol slowly pulled away before she could, eyes drifting to natasha. then, she winked.
before parting from the blonde, she whispered some last words to her and pressed her lips to the back of her hand in a soft kiss. (second time she'd done that that night.) when she left her, the blonde was staring straight ahead, looking a bit shell-shocked. carol felt the back of her neck heating up but she kept her cool as she approached natasha, greeting her with a; "hey, babe" and a hand reaching out for her elbow to guide her away enough from the bar.
"enjoyed the show?" she asked once they were out of earshot, her lips curled up in a smirk. she sincerely hoped this confidence didn't fade her tonight after that little performance. "i told her to meet us in the back in 20 minutes. want to see if we can get information out of her? if not, we can always find someone else to intercept, maybe get them to tell each other some information. what do you think?"

@twinklefists said: ❛ i don’t think i’ve ever seen you smile. ❜ from some meme || always accepting
Wanda turned her eyes down, a soft laugh escaping her. For a long time there had been nothing for Wanda to feel happy about. She’d lost her parents, her brother, and then Vision. But the one thing she’d been able to save was her children. Tommy and Billy were beautiful, compassionate, and loving boys and Wanda would do anything to keep them safe. Her heart would always ache for the people she’d lost, but her boys were like a balm.
When she looked up at Carol again, she shrugged. “They make it easier to smile,” she replied. Wanda glanced at the boys playing on the jungle gym of the park. “I don’t know where I’d be without them.”

@twinklefists [continued from here]
Peter couldn't say that he'd never gotten pulled back into this universe and dumped into instant trouble before. But he could say that this'd been the first time that'd happened while he was mid-suiting up. Spider-Man suit on underneath his clothes as it almost always was, his shirt and jacket were somewhere back in his own universe while his jeans and sneakers had stayed on. Not the best way to keep a secret identity secret- especially since he hadn't been quick enough to get the mask on. But-
"Guessing you know him then?" he asked, peering closely at the vial before carefully applying some to the wound he hadn't been quite quick enough to avoid. It seemed to be some sort of actually working liquid bandage- much better than the flimsy, barely sticky stuff that fell off if you looked at it wrong that was available in most bodegas and grocery stores. "The, um... I mean we're all real, but this universe's Pe- Spider-Man? And um I- I just sorta snap back eventually. Working on a thing that'll help me control it, though. Since I do have a life of my own. Technically speaking."
