TRICK OR TREAT!! 🍬🦇👻
sooooo i finally got started on the treemina/haysilee/clato oneshot, here's the treech pov part:
one day you'll understand why (everything you touch surely dies)
Three different Games, three boys. Separated across generations, they each stare in dismay at a dying peer (or an ally, a partner, a friend, something more, something less, nothing really, but also somehow everything) with racing hearts beating in denial and rage, frantic thoughts of it's not supposed to be like this running through their minds.
The story ends the same every time.
-
Treech catches fleeting glimpses of Lamina's frizzed unkempt halo of fiery red hair, like a starburst dancing in the corner of his eye, and can't help but think of blood.
He has never seen it in person, at least not on a regular basis, and not in copious amounts. Working weekend shifts at the warehouse, packing and sorting boxes of paper for shipment to the Capitol, put him only at risk of paper cuts, and he's never even had a scraped knee. The Dark Days are so far back in his memory they are almost a fairy tale, and he never even saw a dead body. Blood might not be a familiar sight to him, but he would imagine that he is about to see enough of it in the next few days to last him a lifetime.
A lifetime - he no longer has the luxury of assuming he has any such thing.
Not one to indulge morbid, despairing thoughts, he instead returns his focus to sneaking furtive side glances at the girl seated next to him on the rock. A complete stranger, but she's the only one he's familiar with, the last piece of home Treech has left, and honestly, she's actually quite captivating - in a morose, pitiful way.
Her breaths are noisy and ragged, thick with congestion from her sobbing. Tear tracks flow in rivers down her cheeks, creating smooth lines of pale skin, the water carving little paths of cleanliness that cut through the dirt scattered on her face. Lamina reminds him of a broken bird, and that's not a kind or fair thought to have, but it is the first comparison that comes to mind when he sees her, with her tangled hair and gaunt cheeks and shaking fists.
It isn't as if he judges her to be weak - Treech himself is terrified out of his mind, his fear gathering in his chest in a cloud of smoke and constricting his lungs with a vise grip until inhaling and exhaling becomes a laborious task. He can feel his own heart fighting to stay alive, beating rapidly like a wild animal being hunted. It takes every last remaining semblance of restraint he still has to not reach through the bars of this cage and strangle a Capitolite who got too close, act exactly like the beast they clearly saw him as.
However, isn't it better to at least pretend? To face reality with unflinching stoicism, formulate a logical plan to get back to his family, rather than only fixate on his impending doom?
From Lamina's tremulous sniffles, it is apparent she disagrees. He wonders, out of curiosity, how long she'll last in the Games - the Arena doesn't seem like a place where the weeping Tributes come out winners.
On his eighth side-glance, which he mistakenly believed to be sufficiently well-timed enough to be inconspicuous, she finally faces him, meeting his eyes with her own. He's surprised to find that they are a stunning brown, like the soft foamy soil underneath his feet, or the bark of a healthy young tree. Her gaze sears into him, youthful and innocent and inquisitive, reminiscent of a deer who is aware that it is about to become some predator's meal.
He could tear his eyes away, make the wise decision to ignore her for the rest of their extremely limited and most likely unpleasant time together. Nonetheless, his body inexplicably refuses to force himself away from her.
She looks back, unashamed, and her mouth parts hesitantly, words just cresting over the tip of her tongue and begging to be released, before she seals her lips together and thinks better of it. Treech could ask her what she wanted to say, but he doubts it matters at this point.
He could also indulge the impulse he has to run his thumb along the smudges of thick dust collecting on her face, wipe away this girl's tears and put her back together into something recognizable as joyful and healed, bring her a peace he can't find for himself.
Treech does no such thing.
They stare at one another for the last time as he prepares to abandon her for a larger alliance (his heart and brain and body scream conflicting arguments at him, but he's more inclined to follow whichever act allows him to leave this Arena alive - in summary, brain wins this one even if his heart hurts more than ever before, spasming painfully against his ribs).
He reasons with himself that it is better this way, if only so he can spare himself the fate of going mad with guilt. Because if he allows himself to stay with this strange girl, he'll come dangerously close to caring, and no one won the Games by actually giving a damn about their District partner. Already, she exerts some sort of gravitational pull on him, and he has known her for... a week? If that. Lamina has an uncanny ability to make him want to be closer to her, to know her even just a little more than he does now before he dies, and that simply would not do. These fickle thoughts and wants had no place in the Arena.
She looks visibly wounded, stricken by his betrayal, and he suddenly hates himself for that, but survival has far more appeal, even if it tastes like ashes and regret.

PLEASE tell us more about your vision of Haymitch’s Halloween propo 👀👀
Omg yessssss!!!! Thank you for asking!!
For reference
Plutarch reaches out to all the Victors to try and get them involved in Government propos, specifically ones focused on history/tradition/holiday/unity.
The Victors from District 12 are the first to get the request and all three flat out refuse to participate. Plutarch gives it a week and then calls Haymitch to try again.
Haymitch handles the government calls for the three of them: although Katniss and Peeta are no longer minors, Haymitch was technically both their legal guardians at one point and beyond that still views himself as their Mentor.
Furthermore, Haymitch and Plutarch have a rapport, they’re both strategists and enjoy the challenge of dealing with the other. When Plutarch realizes he’s getting nowhere, he makes a vague reference to the terms of Katniss’s banishment - he says it in a light jovial manor, but Haymitch recognizes it for the power play it is, so he relents, agreeing that he will do a short segment about District 12’s Harvest Festival, but ‘the kids’ will absolutely not be involved: no questions about them and they won’t be on camera.
Plutarch isn’t all that put out about just having Haymitch. For some reason Haymitch has a great Q Score - he’s the nation’s drunk uncle - there is something comforting about him still being alive and still being the same person they’ve know for the past three decades. (His proximity to the star-crossed-lovers doesn’t hurt his appeal either.)
Haymitch doesn’t know this and plans to do the bare minimum to fulfill this duty. He doesn’t clean his house or take any mind to what he’s wearing and turns up the grouch/drunk factor when the crew arrives in hopes this will deter Plutarch from ever asking again - but ‘Grumpy drunk’ is Haymitch’s ‘brand’ and Plutarch eats his footage up. (Haymitch immediately realizes his mistake, so when Plutarch calls for another propo, he readily agrees. This time Haymitch cleans himself and the house and makes a big deal of ‘acting proper’ - Plutarch deems the footage ‘virtually unusable’ and never asks again)
But back to the Fall Fest Footage:
The crew shows up and there are too many people. The director actually remands two of them to a different room while they’re shooting in Haymitch’s house. They just sort of seem to be in the way, lingering in the edge of shots, it’s strange.
Not to mention - It’s shot in August but the director insist it needs to appear to be fall: they put a fire in the hearth and dress Haymitch in a thick sweater. The trees are green and it’s in the 90s but they insist he keep the sweater on for the outdoor shots. (Addition courtesy of @thelettersfromnoone)
When the segment comes out, Katniss and Peeta are eager to watch with Haymitch.
That’s when he understands.
In the footage taken in his home, he’s positioned with the kitchen slightly out of focus in the background: you can make out the figures of two people (a stocky blond apron-ed man and a slight woman with a braid) seemingly cooking a meal in his home.
The actors also appear in the corner of other shots with Haymitch and beyond that, Plutarch has added voice over bits to shots of some blond dude rolling out cookie dough and and a woman with a dark braid demonstrating archery to a gaggle of smiling children. They never refer to Katniss and Peeta by name but the voice over vaguely references ‘the District’s other Victors’ as the actors follow several paces behind Haymitch. Later suggests that apple dumpling are ‘a treat worthy of the Star-Crossed-Lovers of District 12’ as the actors approach a sweets booth.
Haymitch is outraged (mostly because he should have expected something like this)
Katniss can’t stop pointing out ‘blatant inaccuracies’ that the casual observer wouldn’t notice but are ‘egregious’ to her. Things like: ‘Peeta would never knead like that!’, and ‘I’m not that tall and no one smiles at me like that!’ and ‘those trees don’t even grow in 12!’
Peeta thinks it’s fucking hilarious.
#with all that said#I like to think Haymitch is smarter than this#that he would have figured it out before the propo aired and tried to sabotage#but I’m suspending my disbelief for the sake of the humor#I like to think that Johanna calls immediately and starts rubbing them all#haymitch abernathy#I don’t know how to tag this actually#plutarch heavensbee#katniss everdeen#peeta mellark#thg headcanons#postwar#ask answered

Do you know of any Odesta fanfics that feature Finnick and Haymitch’s friendship or Annie and Haymitch’s? There was this really good one you recommended a while back that was from Haymitch’s pov and featured Odesta near the end. so I was wondering if you knew of any that had this dynamic
Hi, I do know some like that!
the bottom of the deep blue sea. by Cat_nevermind - I read this one for the first time around 4 years ago and I still come back to it. It's from Haymitch's POV and has a great perspective on his relationship with Finnick and the other victors.
It's Not the Waking, It's the Rising by carnationhes - This is another great Haymitch POV that takes place during and shortly after Finnick's Games. It sets Finnick's story in a cool and unique light, so you might like to check it out.
Haymitch's Victor(s?) by TheWalkingGrimes - This one explores a little moment right before the end of the 74th Games, and it's such a cool portrayal of Haymitch's relationship with Finnick right before the rebellion. The whole series is one of my favorites so definitely check it out if you haven't already.
Triptych by deathmallow - This is a post-war (canon compliant) fic that focuses on the dynamic between Haymitch, Annie, and Johanna. It's beautiful and long and heartwarming and does justice to all the characters.
Madrigal by sabaceanbabe - This one focuses on the Finnick, Haymitch, and Johanna dynamic which I absolutely love. The characterizations are wonderful and it covers so much time without getting bogged down in the negativity.
The Golden Mean by FernWithy - This one takes place during the 3rd Quarter Quell with a lot of emphasis on the behind the scenes aspects of the rebellion. Haymithc is the POV character but there's a lot in here about his relationships with the other victors, which I really like.
Moss On The Ruins by Trovia - This is another favorite of mine. It's Finnick's POV with his relationships with the victors as a focal point of the story. I like his dynamic with Haymitch in this one.
I am also a fan of this dynamic and Finnick's relationships with the other victors, I think there's such an interesting history there. Feel free to share recs of your own or promote your own work!

hi friend! wanted to ask you smthn
ive been thinking and wondering why Snow didn't have Katniss (and everyone she loves) killed outright honestly or staged it somehow.
i'm remembering how Haymitch won and i still don't see it as a way of 'mocking' the capital. but Katniss' stunt with the berries was far more openly rebellious to me as a reader yet Snow sat on this decision to take care of her but murdered Haymitch's family within 2 weeks
im just contemplating hmmmm was it because others were already rebelling as well and if he took her out ASAP then it might've just added fuel to the fire ?
you got me wanting to revisit the series!!!! curse you (affectionately)!!!!!! i need to find a thesis topic send help OTL
hi there! well, you're definitely right in your assessment that haymitch's defiance was less inflammatory in the grand scheme of things. idk if you have read tbosas but i think that book gives you a good idea of how snow is not just obsessed with power but also control. and haymitch doing what he did took some of the capitol's control over the narrative of what makes a victor. it wasn't that he won because he proved himself to be the stronger, more ruthless fighter. he won because he was smart. and while you can easily manipulate a victor who wins the games on the capitol's terms (and is basically a capitol drone), a victor who defies this traditional victor narrative and uses the capitol's weapons against them poses much more of a threat (at least in snow's eyes). and i think, at least to a degree, snow was worried that if given a chance, victors like haymitch would use their status to rally people behind them. so he made an example of him. he didn't have to kill all of haymitch's loved ones, but he did. simply to show that he can. (not just show haymitch but every living victor and all the victors to come.) in the end, i don't think that it had much to do with haymitch and everything to do with the possibility of what some like haymitch could represent. the kind of stories you could spin around someone like haymitch.
and then katniss comes around, and unlike haymitch, she isn't reaped. she volunteers for her little sister—a blond, pretty little thing that half of panem becomes enamoured with over the course of katniss's games. the people do not just fall in love with prim, they also fall in love with katniss, the girl that keeps showing a lot of compassion for the people around her. and she does draw attention with that. people know her. people support her. oh and what a story she makes! oh what a narrative! the girl who volunteered! the girl on fire! and then she does the most rebellious thing by pulling out the poisonous berries and threatening the victor narrative that has been so carefully established over the years. the girl with the berries! she flips the script in the most radical way, and if she didn't have all of panem's eyes on her before, she does now. and the people look at her and her compassion and begin to stir. they begin to see that change is possible, so they rebel. you mentioned it already, but killing her AFTER the stunt with the berries was impossible. not just because people would have known why and by whom she was killed, but because it would have added fuel to the fire. snow, much like coin later on, realises that the rebellion will only co-opt her image and make her a martyr. snow definitely sees that katniss alive can be used in a way that can potentially help his cause, whereas katniss dead will always gonna end up helping the rebels in their cause. and killing katniss's mother might have been possible without raising many questions, but killing prim? no way he could have had her killed without making people suspicious. there is also a big chance that the rebels would have co-opted prim's death as well (or at least bank on the suspicions swaying some people). and without her family, how would snow have anything to control katniss with?
and the thing is. while haymitch was an incovenience he was never a real threat. not the way katniss is. killing haymitch's family was a means to an end, but nothing more. snow didn't need to control him beyond making him fall in line because haymitch had absolutely no social power to rival snow's. but katniss has. she has many of the district citizens at her back. and the only way to contain her (in snow's eyes) is to hold the threat of hurting her loved ones over her head. take that away and snow has nothing to stop her from leaning into the role the rebellion has assigned her. which is also why he doesn't kill peeta in mockingjay. again, with peeta gone there would be nothing holding katniss back from working with the rebels.
the social power that haymitch and katniss wielded after their respective games is basically what makes all the difference (in my opinion). and that's why, with katniss, snow's hands were tied by circumstance (in a way). retaliating against her directly (either by harming her or by harming her family) would have resulted in more problems than solutions, while killing haymitch's family & girlfriend was a quick and efficient way to stop an inconvenient victor in his tracks AND use him as an example that saves snow the time to put every victor in their place individually. in a cruel way, haymitch simply had bad luck on top of his bad luck.

i wonder what the sotr movie will do in re: book vs movie continuity, because obviously the mockingjay pin is a huge part of maysilee and haymitch's story in the books but in the movies katniss gets it from greasy sae so will the movie somehow connect them or will it just ignore that entirely? idk i'm curious.
#and as we've established i think about the mockingjay pin and 'does haymitch realise katniss' mockingjay pin is maysilee's mockingjay pin'#very often. bc like. does he.#that's what i need answered in this book idrc about anything else i need this#thg

more than ever at this current time i fear we need to make that club about mischaracterized guys... (reference to post i can't remember but!!!!!!!!!!)
this!! god we absolutely should.
i was rereading a fic a while back and beetee was in a scene and literally every single time he spoken i was just like 😐 are you sure this is the beetee mateo latier or another character because who the fuck is this guy.
i have found that ever since i became completely obsessed with beetee, i have become way more critical of the fanfic i consume because every time he appears i’m literally like that’s not even beetee. no one understands him like i do (except for my beloved mutuals ofc).
#dayne answers#sigh. it’s literally marlene mckinnon all over again.#but i would love to know what brought this on!! did something happen in the haymitch community i don't know about??#dayne’s beetee tag#beetee latier

what were the talents of Haymitch, Chaff, Lyme, and Blight?
Haymitch: Doesn't have like a traditional Victors' talent, with like magazine and tv highlights. Imagine he sometimes carve stuff out of wood with a knife, but he hasn't sat down to do it properly for years
Chaff: Similarly to Haymitch, think he makes jokes that his Victor's talent is comedy. Like the idea he has some musical talent. Has one of those nice deep voices.
Lyme: Making stuff out of rocks, like sculptures and statues
Blight: He mostly work in lumber as his hobby. Have made nice furniture and such though.
