Do you think Peeta saying in the SOTR epilogue that Katniss is like Haymitch a joke or a compliment?

i've been thinking about this one a while, and wanted to get through sotr again before answering. i think it's both a joke and a compliment, as well as simply an observation.

one thing katniss notes about prim is that she has "an ability to look into the confusing mess of life and see things for what they are." it's something katniss describes as "entirely her own." only, she says it in the context of her family. just prim, not burdock, asterid, nor katniss, has this quality. but, looking outside of framework, it's the very thing she admires most about peeta.

from the minute she understands what he means by not wanting to be a "piece in their games," katniss starts to believe the things that peeta says as the truth. she does the same with prim in mockingjay, starting when prim tells katniss that she could ask for anything she wants and they'd have to give it to her because they need her that bad. haymitch, certainly, sees peeta in the same light.

but it's not just about how haymitch and katniss, who are biased, view peeta as this bastion of truth (which is ironic, considering his last name). when he tells people something that he thinks is true, people can't help but believe it. the capitol audience buys that his interest in katniss is genuine, and not some last-ditch effort to gain sponsors. many doubt katniss, who definitely has at least crush, but never peeta. with the morphling from district 6, she is entranced as he talks about mixing colors while she dies. he successfully reassures a grieving, agonized, entirely uncooperative finnick that annie was not tortured for the jabberjays to mimic her screams.

it's why the hijacking is so effective. because it disrupts the core of who peeta is. but even that doesn't shake him for long. he encourages pollux before they go into the transfer. he compliments tigris on her styling abilities. he garners annie's support against the proposal for a final games. peeta is no less charismatic, no less persuasive during his first captive interview with caesar, when he paints a picture of his time in the games and calls for a ceasefire. but nobody believes him then.

because what gives his words power, what gives them meaning, is that he is someone who looks "into the confusing mess of life and sees things for exactly what they are." as such, his truth is the truth people believe. so when he tells katniss and haymitch they are just alike, he says that because there's no question to him if it's real or not real. it just is.

it's a joke because he's been saying the same thing since katniss found him half-dead in the stream. it's a compliment because it's he loves both haymitch and katniss so much that to compare one to the other is reflecting his love between two mirrors. and it's also just what peeta knows to be true. and, therefore, it is.

Sunrise on the Reaping is about the gradual steps necessary for revolution, and yet Haymitch sees himself as the solo hero who will bring down the Capitol. Sure, he has the Newcomers on his side inside the arena and Beetee and Plutarch feeding him plans from outside, but on some level Haymitch has it in his head that he's gonna be the guy who breaks the Games. He's the person who scored a one in training, he's the person whose reaping was rigged, he's the person directly connected to the rebels, he's the person who Snow wanted a one-on-one chat with. Haymitch accepts from day one that he's gonna die in his mission to break the arena. His only priorities are to keep his friends safe and to do some damage on the way out, and yet he fails on both counts. He tells everybody to stay away from him because he's the person the Gamemakers will be gunning to kill, but it's Ampert and Maysilee who are devoured by mutts. Not because they were associated with Haymitch, but because they did more direct damage than him. Even Maritte from district four was willing to kill some Gamemakers, and she was dead before the day ended. Haymitch couldn't lay down his life in one grand heroic gesture, and he couldn't serve as one cog in the rebellion. He caused some chaos, but nothing that couldn't be erased in the edit. His punishment was to be left alive, safe in the knowledge that he's as harmless as a corpse.

late night thoughts: hypothetically if there were more pets in thg…like hamsters….*insert everyone has a traumatic childhood hamster story here* what would each characters hamster story be? Full transparency (from Jersey, spent summers at the shore, and got a got hermit crab once, put it in the fish tank, and quickly learned that they don’t survive in water) and I still feel so bad to this day

Katniss/Prim: Prim begs for the hamster. Katniss is Not happy because hamsters aren't useful, Prim, they're just another mouth to feed, but also she loves Prim and one of the Town kids at school's got a hamster that just had babies so. Prim gets the hamster. the problem is, of course, that Prim also has Buttercup. doesn't take long before the hamster "disappears" (Katniss finds Buttercup chewing on it and quickly hides the evidence before Prim wakes up)

Peeta: Peeta has such a horrible home life and is looking for something, anything, that he can call his own to get him through. so when the kid at school says he's got hamsters and wants to know if he wants one, he doesn't think twice, just hides it in his bag and takes it home. He keeps the hamster hidden in his drawer and sneaks it seeds and some water every day. it all goes south when one of his brothers slams the drawer too hard.

Gale: Gale isn't the one who gets the hamster, it's Rory. Hazelle freaks out and tries to get rid of the hamster, but the idea upsets Rory so much that eventually Gale talks her out of it. They build the hamster an elaborate cage with lots of tunnels and things to climb, it's a project they spend days on, and Posy is in charge of making sure the hamster has enough food and water. the hamster outlives every other one on this list and dies of old age.

Finnick: someone thinks that Finnick needs something to occupy him (which is probably true) and so he ends up with a hamster. Finnick does not want a hamster. Finnick has absolutely no interest in pets or animals, so he immediately tries to pass the hamster off on one of the kids of the other victors. this does not work. he continues to try and get rid of the hamster, and then eventually on a really, really bad day gets so frustrated that he "accidentally" leaves the cage door open. this backfires because it gets stuck in the wall somehow and dies. they then have to take the wall apart to get the hamster out.

Johanna: Johanna does not like hamsters. Johanna ends up getting a hamster as a gift, or at least she thinks she does, because she walks into the house one day and the telltale signs of Blight Meddling (for example, the house is much cleaner) are there, as well as a hamster in a cardboard box on the counter. but Johanna's also not heartless and doesn't want it to die, so she tries to take care of it for a while. she brings it outside and lets it play in the grass because she thinks that's probably good for it, except one day while they're outside before she can do anything, one of Blight's dogs runs over, grabs the hamster up in its mouth, and runs away. Johanna swears off pets after this and will deny it but cries for a couple days over it.

there are many other hamster stories waiting to be unlocked here but i didn't want to make this Too long so i guess we could do like. hamsters part two if people are compelled by this

Yeah like words means things and I need “Incest”/Sibling coded” to be taken away from fandoms when they are just talking about close friendships with no relations ASAP

Immediate thought is that this is LENORE DOVE saying this to Haymitch. SPECIFICALLY in song form, but this could also be before the Reaping /after the Reaping when Haymitch is chosen.

Another strong contender is Haymitch, obviously.

But.

This could also be literally any other character (except Sid, I’d wager)

What if this was Maysilee saying this? Maybe not to Haymitch, but to her sister. Doubt it tbh, but it’s a possibility.

Haymitch could also pull a Finnick during his tribute interview if he didn’t get a chance to say goodbye.

Or, more tragically, this could be said/thought of after Lenore Dove’s passing.

This could also be about a familial bond, which is a relationship dynamic that is so so crucial to THG as a whole.

I’m so so so excited to see what the context for this is. Who says it and to who.

I’m hoping/pretty confident it’s Lenore Dove or Haymitch, but hell I feel like even Haymitch’s Ma might be a strong contender too!

I really love how Suzanne Collins uses romance to support her overall message. While the original books are often reduced to a silly teenage love triangle, they are so much more. Same with Ballad of Songbird and Snakes and Sunrise on the Reaping.

Katniss/Peeta and Corionlanus/Lucy Gray are symbols for the reader just as much as they are symbols for the citizens of Panem. But Haymitch does not allow the Capitol to use him and Lenore Dove like that. They do not end up as symbols for the Capitol to manipulate. But as readers, their love is still symbolic.

Katniss choosing Peeta over Gale was symbolic of choosing peace and growth over vengeance. Coriolanus not choosing Lucy Gray was symbolic of choosing personal gain at the expense of others. Haymitch being tricking into killing Lenore Dove is symbolic of how propaganda usually comes in familiar and easy to swallow formats, and by the time you realize the implications, it may be too late.

im so excited for the movie but i had such a hard time picturing the characters

honestly i struggled to picture them as well and idk sorry i don’t really have fancasts for them :/

all i know is i’d like the cast to be unknown talent! or at least actors who haven’t been in a lot / not had their big break yet.

i’m interested to see what they do about haymitch - will they go book accurate or will they model the actor after woody harrelson?

one thing i DO want is age accurate actors tho as well. i think the casting for ballad was so good because the kids actually felt like kids. i loved jennifer and josh but i want to see how young these kids are. i think the message of the book is lost without that.

sorry i didn’t answer your questions on fancasts but i simply don’t have any already famous actors in mind so thought i’d waffle about what kind of people i want playing the cast. what do you think tho?

Oh, anon, I think my brain (and heart) is still too messed up to come up with truly interesting ideas right now. I will say that, as I was trying to fall asleep last night, I did imagine a little moment from a possible third chapter of 'afterburn'.

Haymitch seeing Katniss and Peeta walking through Victors' Village with a picnic basket and stopping them in their tracks to ask, "Did you remember plates and silverware?"

They look all confused. "Yeah. Of course. Why?"

Then Haymitch just smiles wistfully and says, "Good," but internally he's thinking, 'My Sis would be just as proud of them as I am.'
