Dire Crowley = Dear Crowley

The Japanese language is big on shortening words, and combining shortened words together to create new words.

If you’re into anime at all you are probably already familiar with this, with Pretty Cure being referred to as precure, Uta no Prince-sama becoming UtaPri, etc.

This system is not limited to anime titles and objects but can apply to people as well. Usually celebrities, with Brad Pitt becoming brapi, Matsumoto Jun becoming Matsujun, etc.

This happens often inside Twst itself! “Blast cycles” on NA are “magical wheels” on JP, which gets shortened to magi-whee, while Spelldrive is originally “magical shift”, which gets shortened in-game into “magi-ft” (or maji-futo), which is a play on words that connects it to the katakana-pronunciation of football (more here).

The game’s creator Toboso Yana is big on wordplay:

The Bloom/Broom series, for example, is called ブルーム: the katakana-ization of both the words “bloom” and “broom” (and the designs involve blooming brooms (more here)

To return to to Dire Crowley: his first name, “Dire”, should technically be written as ダイア in katakana (“daiah”) but it isn’t.

Yana has retconned the word “dire” to be pronounced as ディア (“dee-ah”) and this is the exact same pronunciation as the English word “dear” in Japanese.

Here is a tweet by a JP-server player recently realizing his name is not “Dear Crowley,” (beloved/affectionately) but “Dire” (dreadful/disastrous).

(We do not really see "Dire" written in English in the main story, so there is no way for us to know unless we look it up in his profile. As far as the average JP-server player knows, his name is "Dear.")

From a JP-server perspective this means that Crowley’s name is being pronounced as “beloved” while secretly meaning “disastrous.”

To Sleeping Beauty: Maleficent’s raven is, as explained in the fan book, named “Diablo”.

In katakana this is written as ディアブロ (dee-ah-boo-row).

If we return to the practice of shortening words in Japanese and apply it to Crowley, we get ディアクロ (dee-ah-koo-row).

ディアブロ = Diablo ディアクロ = Diacrow

In katakana, there is only one sound keeping the two characters from having identical names.

While not official, there is also the theory that Crowley could have been partially inspired by bisexual English occultist, philosopher, magician, poet, painter, novelist, and mountaineer, Aleister Crowley.

Wikipedia says Crowley believed in the objective existence of magic and he deliberately adopted an exceptionally broad definition of magic that included almost all forms of science and technology.

He was a prolific author and published several books, collections of poetry and instructions for his own tarot deck, including:
