Sweet Magnolias S3 Spoilers
Did anyone else think the fight between Maddie, Helen and Dana Sue was so frustrating? Maddie didn't do anything wrong, Helen just lost her mind and couldn't face reality. She didn't like that Maddie made her face the fact that she wasn't happy and then her and Dana Sue acted like Maddie wasn't allowed to ask questions? Like ?????? Isn't that what margarita night has always been? Why are you two allowed to ask her questions about her love life but she's not allowed to ask about Ryan?

So I am on season 3 episode 6 and what the hell are Helen, Dana Sue and Tyler on? Helen and Dana Sue are gaining up on Maddie. Tyler brought Annie to Jackson when her birthday went to shit at the end due to her weirdass aunt showing up, Mary Vaughn sees him and chews him out and then he gets mad at Annie? Saying that he won't bring her to Castlewood, I understand that, but saying she can't go at all? That's ridiculous??? And he gets all jealous about her and Jackson when they are together? Like dude I like you but you have no right.

Sweet Magnolias “Okay, but…” rant
Can we just talk for a second about Show vs. Book characters?!
I’ve seen SO many posts and interviews or whatever that talk about how the show will follow the books and all - and while that is FANTASTIC couple-wise - but I’m not really convinced that it can.
Character Point 1: Annabelle “Annie” Sullivan
Show Annie is healthy while Book Annie had an eating disorder. I’m not saying that if they decided to follow that storyline that it couldn’t work, but… she’s so conscious of what her mom eats - she attempted to remove all sugars from their home after Dana Sue went to the hospital - that I’m not sure how they would make it believable.
Book Annie ends up becoming a physical therapist or some such and working at The Corner Spa. She COULD choose this path for her life in the show. BUT Show Annie seems more design oriented than Book Annie ever seemed to be. At the moment, I can’t see Show Annie having any interest in being a physical therapist person.
Book Annie seems to have less backbone or equal footing in comparison to Show Annie. The way it seems in the books is that Annie became a physical therapist person BECAUSE of Ty. Like her decisions only focused on a boy. That may just be my interpretation. But Show Annie is part of that blog or message board or whatever that posts photos of the “real Serenity” and I just never got that vibe from Book Annie.
Character Point 2: Tyler “Ty” Townsend
Let’s start with the MAIN divergence that I see between the two: cheating on partner and getting someone else pregnant. They COULD do this - I’d stop watching in protest - BUT it would major shifts in personality/perspective/attitude for it to seem convincing. Show Ty was SO mad at his father for cheating on Maddie and ruining their family by getting someone else pregnant. I can’t see the boy who barely tolerated Noreen’s presence and noticeably grew agitated when she watched his games ever turn around and do that to the person he was with. Especially not if that person was Annie.
Book Ty seems TOO invested in baseball to really be the same person as Show Ty. Maybe thats just because we’ve seen Show Ty deal with the loss of being able to play baseball already and having that “baseball bubble” shattered. Show Ty has already dealt with an injury that requires a break from baseball and he’s found other things he enjoys in that time. Book Ty never seems to have that revelation. Show Ty just seems to have more depth of character to me.
Book Ty just seems to think things will fall into place with very little work. I remember in one of the books, Ty has a conversation with Cal and Cal calls him out on believing that just showing up would guarantee that things went the way Ty wanted. Show Ty seems to have started to be a bit more humbled already. Someone his age called him out on just trying to flirt his way into getting what he wants. Also, Show Ty has had to watch Annie with someone else and not be able to say anything. I don’t recall anything like that for Book Ty.
Character Point 3: Maddie Townsend
Show Maddie has been dating Cal a while, right? No proposals or pregnancies as far as I can see. It feels in-authentic for Show Maddie to decide on trusting and marrying someone that fast.
Character Point 4: Helen Decatur
Book Helen and Book Erik were in a friends-with-benefits relationship. Show Helen and Erik are friends - we’re ignoring that rough patch where they don’t talk - but I have yet to see hide nor hair of “with-benefits” in the show.
Book Helen is so desperate for a child that she manipulates Book Erik to get what she wants. Show Helen is a wonderful lawyer that gets what needs done done. But Show Helen would NEVER violate trust given to her like THAT. Show Helen wants children, but she’s gonna do it by herself if she has to; none of that (toxic) behavior needed as she’s too kind-hearted for that.
Need I go on???
Does anyone ACTUALLY think that we can really say that the show will follow the books?!
thank you for listening to my rant.
(Yes, I adore TyAnnie)

Top 100 Ladies of TV
Looking at old blog posts, many years ago I did a "100 favorite female characters" list, but I have met so many wonderful new ladies now that it is quite out of date and needs a major update to accommodate them. International Women’s Day seems like the perfect time to do so!
Only this time I'm restricting it to TV characters, or I will die of Overwhelm.
NOTE: This list is not in any kind of order, I just wrote them down as they came to mind. I considered alphabetical, but found it was nicer to keep everyone from a given show together. And rather than starting from scratch, I kept as much of the original list as I could and just added newer favorites on at the end, if you're wondering why some of these Very Old Fandoms are clustered at the top.

Charakterentwicklung in Staffel 2

SO: I just finished watching Sweet Magnolias on Netflix in the span of 24 hours and I just have a few things to say:
Aunt Helen is my favorite. Aunt Helen deserves the world. Aunt Helen for President.
Small town charm.
Small town probs.
The kids are so great--seriously. They are young people playing young people with real problems in a small town, and in a world of shows like Riverdale, it's kind of refreshing to see something on the other end of the spectrum.
The struggles of each of the characters were written and portrayed with a lot of nuance and care--there wasn't a simple solution or a "right" answer to a lot of their issues.
Strong women running a business. Yas.
ALSO: Good for you Noreen. Very happy for you.
Aunt Helen adopting everyone. Did I mention that I love her???
WTF WAS THAT ENDING????
If we don't get a season two I will always wonder and I can't handle that.

The Farmer or the Father?
Part 2:
WARNING: SMUT
A/N: It’s a shame there isn’t any fan fiction about Dana Sue so I am here to change that.
Tumblr media
Dana Sue has been working on the food for the little gala the Sweet Magnolias are throwing for the town. After the accident, everybody kinda needs a good reason to forget life for a while. She wiggles herself in her dress as Helen knocks on the door. "Need some help?" She smiles while leaning against the door frame.
Dana Sue rolls her eyes and points at the zipper of her dress on her back. Her suede dress is a dark red and is wrapped tight around her waist, showing off the swell of her breasts and her curvy body. The dress sways around her legs and has a deep split on the left side, showing her black shiny killer heels. Helen steps behind her and closes the zipper with a smile on her face.
"What?" Dana Sue snarks and Helen laughs hard. "I haven't seen you this dressed up in a while and I think the last time was when Ronnie was still around." Helen's smile says it all. "I know what you're thinking and don't you even go there. This party is to forget some of the horrible things that happened and I tend to do exactly that." Dana Sue turns around and puts a hand on her hip.
Helen comes closer. "With Ronnie?" She whispers and Dana Sue's expression goes to a scowl that makes Helen laugh and bend over, trying hard not to pass out. "I really hate you right now." Dana Sue smiles even though she doesn't want to think about Ronnie, they have history. Really important history and she wants to do the right thing for her family... but what about Jeremy?
----
She walks down the stairs and there he is in a black suit with a white dress shirt and dark grey tie. He outstretches a hand towards her and she takes it as her other hand grabs a part of her dress to walk down the stairs. "You look incredible." Ronnie says while kissing her cheek sweetly, something he has been doing a lot lately. She swallows hard and looks everywhere but at him. "Thank you." She murmurs.
He guides her to the main room where everybody is talking, dancing, and enjoying their time. He is still holding her hand when Maddie and Cal are coming their way. "Aren't you two looking beautiful." Maddie says as Cal agrees, nodding along. Maddie has always been on Ronnie's side when it comes to the relationship. Dana Sue wants to roll her eyes at the statement when she feels a hand creeping around her waist. She looks up at Ronnie who is still in conversation with Cal.
She pulls herself free from his arm and walks towards Helen, her dress flowing gracefully behind her. She stops in her tracks when she sees Helen smiling and laughing with someone. When she comes closer she sees it is Eric and she doesn't want to impose.
She walks outside on the patio which is surrounded by white flowy curtains. The evening breeze does her good and she closes her eyes, taking in the surrounding sounds of the night. After standing there for a few minutes she hears footsteps behind her and before she can react, her waist is enveloped by two large arms. She sighs heavily and her head leans back against a firm chest.
She knows she shouldn't do this, but she can't deny their chemistry. "You seemed lonely out here so I thought why not join you?" He breathes against her neck and she feels a shiver going down her back. He slowly turns her around in his arms and she opens her eyes, looking straight into his. He smiles gently and pulls her even closer into his embrace. Her hands wrap around his biceps and she can see he is closing the gap between them.
Her head moves back without her even thinking about it. There is a hurt look on his face before he lets her go. “I’m sorry Ronnie but I can’t do this. I am with Jeremy now and you need to accept that.” She sighs heavily as she only looks at the ground, her hands in front of her fidgeting. He steps back and looks her up and down. “You know the guy should be lucky. I know I would.” She looks up at that and sees his retreating back.
Her eyes become glassy and she feels her cheeks getting wet from her tears. Saying goodbye to someone that was such a large part of her life is intense. She walks back inside to see Helen laughing and dancing with Erik. At the other side of the room, she sees Maddie dancing with Cal, being in love and Dana Sue feels a pang in her chest. She slips out of the Spa without anybody noticing and gets into her car. She drives aimlessly until she finally gets out of her head.
She can see she is driving up the road towards Jeremy’s farm. Her mouth turns into a wide smile as she remembers the feeling that he brings out in her. She parks her car alongside the house, the lights of her car go out and she sees the front door opening. A tall handsome man is standing in the doorway as she gets out. “Not that I don’t love it that you’re here but shouldn’t you be at your own party?”
He takes her hand and guides her inside. “I know but I missed you, everybody was dancing with their loved one and I couldn’t.” She can see that Jeremy is very flattered at her words and a slight blush comes across his cheeks. “Well, you can have anything you like.” He winks at her and she chuckles. They walk into the living room and she looks around. She has never been here before and his house is very cozy and looks nothing like a farm.
The interior is clean with a lot of grey and wood, but it also looks very warm and inviting. He watches her as she looks around, still holding his hand. Her eyes roam a particular piece of art. It’s a tree caved out of wood. It looks beautiful and very realistic. “My dad made that. It is our family tree. If you look closer you can see our names carved in it.” She looks closer and smiles when she reads Jeremy’s name under his dad's name and to the side it says, Benjamin.
Her hand slowly moves over the name. “Benjamin?” She looks up at him and his eyes go sad. “Yes, it’s Benji from the co-op. That’s my uncle, my dad’s brother. You knew him from back in the day when you got everything from the co-op.” His voice cracks and his sad face breaks her heart a little. She squeezes his hand with hers and he looks from the tree to her and smiles sadly. “My dad would’ve handled the co-op but he died two months before uncle Benji did.”
She now turns fully towards him and he does the same, both staring into each other’s eyes. “So I did what I had to do and inherited this big responsibility. I am not complaining whatsoever, I just wished my dad was here to tell me how proud he is of me as I try to handle all this.”
She puts her arms around his waist and pulls him close to her. “He would be so proud of what you have accomplished with the co-op. You made the business your own and I wouldn’t want to be in business with anybody else.” She stands on her tiptoes and pecks his lips lightly. His smile turns more genuine after she does that and she can’t help but smile as well. “What?” She asks as she watches his face up close. He laughs and the sound makes her heart skip a beat.
“How am I so lucky with a woman like you? What did I do to deserve you?” He kisses her and she melts into him as her hands go around his neck and his arms envelop her waist. She moans against his lips and he deepens the kiss, his tongue swiping her lower lip.
She gives him entrance and pushes her body closer to his. The heat between the two makes her head dizzy. When they part his wicked grin makes her cheeks red with want and desire. “Because you make me feel like this.” Her hands go to his chest and he looks at her with one eyebrow raised. “And how is that exactly?” She chuckles and puts her forehead on his chest along with her hands as she spreads her fingers across his firm muscles.
He puts one finger underneath her chin and makes her look up, still, his eyebrow raised. “I am waiting for an answer ma’am.” She laughs and so does he. She goes onto her toes again and kisses him, slightly putting pressure on his chest with her fingernails.
He groans as she is bold in the kiss and deepens it. His hands go lower and end up on her ass. He pushes her against his body and feels his heartbeat accelerating. He breaks the kiss abruptly and she looks flushed. “You still didn’t answer, please tell me, Dana Sue?” He never uses her name unless he is very serious. She blinks twice before she tries to find the right words.
“You make my heart sing when I am close to you. When you are not around I think about you and dream about you. I can never really concentrate when you are close to me and I lose track of everything around me.” She bites her lip as she shuts herself up.
He smiles at her lovely words. “You know what they call that sugar?” She shakes her head slowly and his smile brightens. His face comes closer to hers and his lips touch hers slightly.
“Love.”

Sweet Magnolias writers know how to leave viewers with catastrophic season finales, and to say it’s upsetting would be a lie. This isn’t the type of show where things won’t be okay in the end. We understood as much when the Season 2 premiere, “Casseroles and Casualties,” showed us that despite the horrific accident, everything is fine. Or, well, as fine as it can be. The new season gives its characters ample room for exploration and growth and leaves them with the kind of twists that likely won’t undo how far they’ve come.
While Sweet Magnolias’ debut season was good, its sophomore run is where it becomes great. The entirety of this season and this finale demands conversations. It’s what’s likely going to make fans invest themselves even further into the story because the heart of the series is now better than ever. The love stories are even more exhilarating, and the friendships continue to astound us.
And though the season finale leaves us with more unanswered questions than we’d like, it’s worth noting that this is the strongest episode of the season. There are new, threatening faces in town, relationships are on the mend, others will be facing their most challenging tests yet, and there’s still plenty of work needed to make Serenity a better town.
