small  portrayal  note   :            my  rendition  of  shadowheart  still  has  the  tattoo  she  was  shown  with  in  earlier  promotional  content  .  i've  been  struggling  to  find  larian's  original  intent  for  this  tattoo  ,  so  the  reason  as  to  why  she  has  it  and  what  it  means  is  up  for  debate  .  i'll  share  some  of  my  thoughts  below  ,  but  these  may  change  in  time  if  i  find  more  information  . 

in  the  early  acts  of  baulder's  gate  ,  we  all  know  that  shadowheart  suffers  from  amnesia  .  she  cannot  remember  a  large  portion  of  her  past  and  in  the  beginning  ,  this  tattoo  is  also  afforded  the  same  treatment  as  everything  else  .  she  does  not  remember  getting  it  done  or  by  whom  and  does  not  truly  know  the  meaning  behind  it  ,  although  from  it's  design  she  can  only  assume  that  it  was  made  in  tribute  to  the  dark  lady  . 

later  on  ,  perhaps  towards  very  late  act  II  or  early  act  III  ,  shadowheart  will  begin  to  remember  bits  and  pieces  of  getting  the  tattoo  .  eventually  she  will  figure  out  that  it  was  done  in  baulder's  gate  ,  by  a  member  of  her  cloister  whom  she  also  regarded  as  a  close  friend  .  in  her  heart  ,  the  tattoo  was  both  a  tribute  to  lady  shar  but  also  a  tribute  to  her  good  friend  .  a  way  to  remember  her  as  eventually  shadowheart  comes  to  re-learn  that  this  friend  had  been  lost  to  battle  shortly  after  departing  on  a  mission  .
