"Okay," he sighed, sounding seven steps past exhausted as he came in with the screen door banging behind him, rubbing the worst of the motor oil off of his hands with a towel before slumping into the kitchen chair beside her, "I thiiink I'm almost done tuning that hunk of junk up, so I'm just going to take an itsy-bitsy five minute break in here, then I'll finish it up."

"You and that car, I'm starting to get jealous," Laura teased, marking her spot in her textbook before leaning over to him and agreeing, "Five minutes then I kick your sorry butt out, got it," as she placed a tiny kiss to the corner of his mouth.

Instead of smiling or laughing - his usual reactions to her joking like that - Max narrowed his eyes in thought for a beat...and then, as though having waged some silent debate within himself, corrected, "Okay, ten minutes."

"Whoa, ten whole minutes, what changed your mi - " only it hit her before she could finish the thought, surprising a snort of laughter out of her, " - are you seriously that easily distracted, Max?"

Again squinting hard as if his answer required any amount of concentration, he hummed, "One way to find ooout..." And when Laura leaned over a second time, kissing him a second time, he grinned, "Ah, okay, fifteen minutes - you drive a hard bargain, hun."
