Update on my journey of trying to find music that hit similar to will wood/and the tapeworms because my brain is very picky and doesnt like a lot of music!!!!!

when i started looking for recs the first artists i tried were tally hall and lemon demon (though i kinda like both and know why people associate them together, theyre not similar vibes wise for me) + charlies inferno, which i love, but when i tried more that handsome devils music it didnt feel the same as this one

Then i tried ajj, rare americans and oingo boingo. Theyre also not similar but also quite enjoyable to me, especially ajj’s terrifyer and most oingo boingo songs, as theyre all alike, so if you enjoy one youll probably like more

Then i tried exploring more with the evil-antagonist-cabaret vibes. I found kabaret sybarit and a verbal equinox (yes theres also will wood …….. but listen…….) which led to the dresden dolls and amanda palmer in general

LATER I GOT ENLIGHTENED!!!!!!!! I realized the thing i enjoy the most about will woods music is the folk aspect (ESPECIALLY THE KLEZMER VIBES!!!!!!) in will woods songs theres also a saxophone that matches perfectly with it. This lend to some more artists like golem, or rokiczanka (that i already knew, but my dad said the clarinet? in wyszlabym za dziada reminds him of that saxophone in wwatt) knowing that i tried more slavic folk (which i didnt really like lmao)(besides witcher 3 soundtrack, i love it)

And after some more digging today i tried the avant garde genre. So far i think diablo swing orchestra is cool and i have to listen to some more music from them

Its still not the same and exactly what im looking for, but i feel like im getting so much closer!!!!! Now i know what will wood meant when he said he wants his music to be as original as he can. I find elements of his songs i like scattered in so many different genres, and now whats left for me is find something that combines them, like a modern klezmer and punk/rock combination, or more cabaret like songs that are more energetic.

Its a long ass rant and its so oddly specific that i dont have any hope that people would relate to my musical problems. Not complaining tho!!! The journey of finding and listening to so much unique artists helps me see what i enjoy and what dont. Also i love using tumblr as a diary. End of rant, i hope i wont find it cringe later

OKAY okay so home from the undertale soundtrack was added mostly on accident but it kinda worked and my friends bullied me into keeping it. pay back for me going bonkers in their dms and forcing them to vc with me so i could play music at them probably lol

I was gonna add Bruno Major his stuff felt too modern [if that makes sense] for the playlist so i didn’t add him but his music just is a vibe! Nothing and Home are some of my favorites from him.

The Head and The Heart got cut (along with a bunch of other stuff) because my friend said wow uh I think almost fifty songs is a bit much for a request playlist so uhm yeah. Honeybee or People Need A Melody are my personal faves from them, so uh give those a listen if you want.

Roland Faunte’s stuff is good but it’s sadder and idk didn’t know if you’d like that stuff on your playlist. I recommend listening to Brick by Brick (I linked to my favorite recording of it the acoustic extended version :D)

Danny Schmidt's music is pretty neat! This to Shall Pass is what I'll recommend, but his music is pretty varied and all of it is good in my opinion

I haven't listened enough to Defiance Ohio to properly give them a full hearted recommendation but I really like You are Loved! You might like it too

Amigo the Devil is dark folk not the vibe for this playlist but one you might enjoy if you don’t mind talk of stuff like murder and that darker type of subject material. Different Anymore is my favorite that's my recommendation

Also uh warning for darker material and its like barely even related to your playlist at this point but American Murder Song is a folk band! They write murder ballads (i think thats what its called) and all their stuff is related to american history! Lullaby is the song stuck in my head rn, they definitely have catchier songs though. damn im really out here like yeah there's catchier songs about murder out there. uhm augh sorry I just wanted to talk about them I can't get my friends to listen to them with me :/

📏 What’s your go-to canvas size?

3600x2600 my beloved. <3 Usually I crop down my works to fit how much space I actually use so when it comes to final pieces it's random, but I always start off with the 3600x2600, that usually gives me all the space I need. If I need more vertical space I just flip the width and height.

This reminds me though I need to save this as a preset sooo bad I just never do. I had like 1000 presets when I used Sai but I just haven't bothered with saving them in CSP yet. Really should do that since it's a pain in the ass to start my canvas then go to the dropdown to crop it to like 200x200 for small icons and etc.

🎼 Your favorite music to draw to right now?

Recently I've been listening to a tooonnnnnn of Modest Mouse so I can figure out lyrics to put on Art Fight attacks. Usually it doesn't drain me to listen to a single artist/ song/ whatever (the one plus-side to my adhd) but since I'm kinda requiring myself to, I've been getting tired of it. 😭😭 Though if I listened to more of my favs I probably wouldn't be as tired, just not as easy to since I need to listen to more songs I haven't heard yet to decide if I can use their lyrics.

Honorable mention to the Ash Bricky break I took tho. Here's a handful more folk punk bands, just for y'all! I did these in green cause I felt like it, go listen to them! Happy Saturday before I go to Porch Fest :3

Stick and Poke: an acoustic outfit that was my true introduction to folk punk. I found their music in therapy when their song I Don't Even Smoke moved me to tears. They're not really putting stuff out anymore but Poison is my favorite song literally ever and people love hearing it when we busk

Between the Backwoods: a pair out of Kentucky that describe themselves as "Kentucky fried folk." Morgan, the mandolin player, and my boyfriend Max, did a really rad game of musical HORSE the last time they came our way. They sent us a ton of merch one time, I don't remember why, lol

Yes Ma'am: Lil Matt is king of the oogles, this guy is always hopping some train doing some wild drugs* with the hottest alt women imaginable. Almost more of a fast grass sound. We're playing with him at New Year's Eve I can't wait. Listen to the whole album of How Many People How Many Dogs, it's his new one and it's amazing.

Holy Locust: not exactly obscure by any means, but I don't see a lot of folks talk about em. Have a very gospel sound, almost. Uranus Vs Mercury is my favorite of their songs, but like every one is a banger. Very classic folk punk outfit in that there's like a dozen members. My buddy knows em pretty well, apparently one of them spent the whole night hitting his sister tho, lol, but they're apparently cool.

Apes of the State: another band I can't really call obscure, but April is like the nicest person ever, she did a TEDx talk about addiction and recovery and music once. Is incredibly good at Posting on Twitter Dot Com, lol. Lots of their songs are about addiction or heartbreak, though my favorite is Internet Song (which is lyrically ironic considering how online April can get)

Long Sought Rest: A smaller outfit that again I'm not sure is still putting out stuff. If you like that scratchy, loudish sound you'll prolly like em, they sing a lot about traveling and hopping trains (don't we all). Cold Dinner is so much fun, and Punk with a Camera did the video for it (it's on YouTube). I've never met em, unfortunately.

Goodwin Rainer: I almost wanna call them ska-folk? Met them at the house show where I met Spider Bucket, they're fantastic folks. Blink?! was a lot of fun at a packed-out show, I can't wait to see em again.

Confession Kids: another Florida band that's cool folks, though we've never met in person. I love the way they harmonize. Lots of their songs are super anti-capitalist. Jeff Goes to Space is real good and so is Lousy Leeches.

Of course not all of these are super obscure and you've probably heard of a handful, but I'm only like a degree removed from a lot of the bands I talk about, if I don't literally know them. In a lot of ways it's promoting my friends and I love doing that :3

I promise there's more folk punk recs coming, I swear. I've got a lot going on like trying to get ready for our busking tour in DC/NYC in about a week, so packing and prepping for rough living is a slight priority.

But I'm still seeing people talk about folk punk like it's only AJJ, Days n Daze, and Pat the Bunny's assorted projects. And like don't get me wrong I love those, but there's so much more than that out there and like I like Je-C as much as the next guy but there's so much more out there. So here's a non-exhaustive list of bands I plan to gush about in more detail in the future, if your playlist needs a dose of stuff that's not the same three bands I see tumblr talk about. Think of it as a bit of joy in this trying time.<3

As usual, some of these are folks I know personally, others I'm a couple degrees removed from, and others I just think y'all need to know about. Everyone's on Spotify unless I specifically say they're not.

Blossomin' Bone: Probably some of my best friends. They've got a new album coming but Wild Mosey is my favorite song of theirs, but they're all amazing.

Swamp Rats: Andie's banjo playing is to die for, if I'm ever half as good as her I'll know I've made it. Whiskey and Weed is on repeat a lot. Their dog is cute and I love her.

Little Foot: every time I go see a show of his, I cry. He's even got a button that he sells at shows that says "I cried at the little foot show." Growing Up Is Giving Up is my life motto.

Rambler Kane: A little more country-ish and folksy than some of the other bands here, Pat (not that one) is like the sweetest guy. Pride Before the Fall will sell him I promise.

Rail Yard Ghosts: a little crusty, a little witchy, and also great people according to my buddy who's hopped trains with some of em. Burning Down the Landlord's House is a banger.

Spider Bucket: Met them at a show at the punk house, then went to their fest up in NC. Raining Iguanas is a beautiful love song to the great state of Florida.

X Dirty Fingers: Poignant songs about being crushed by society, and with an amazing voice to boot. I've probably met them but don't remember. Third Shift Love Song is super good.

Chad Hates George: Do you like Days n Daze? Do you wish there was more of them but acoustic? Good news, cause Je-C has another band with his sister, and this is it. Shooting Up Breaking Down is the first song I learned on ukulele.

Escape from the Zoo: Do you like Days n Daze? Do you wish there was more of them but more ska-punk? Good news, this is yet another Jesse Sendejas outfit. Twelve Rounds is my favorite, and the first song I got punched in a pit to.

Matt Rivers: Sings a lot of anti-corpo and union songs. He's a friend of a friend, and I'm told he's a cool guy. Shame on Shaw is a song about the train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio. It doesn't pull any punches.

Of course this list is non-exhaustive, so stay tuned cause I will have full write-ups about these folks eventually and there's even more to come.

ok anyway im leaving in. the day after tomorrow at like 2am so im just saying its tomorrow cause im literally just gonna stay up till then theres no point in sleeping. BUT two things. one i need to finish packing. my clothes are dry so i just have to bring them upstairs and pack. sort of stressed out bc like. i like my outfit i dont want to change it but everyones telling me its too hot for a leather jacket like i know!!!! but its my jacket :(

anyway i just have to do that so ill do it now and then…on top of that i wanted to get the draft for my ghost story done but i havent been working on it at all >_< ive just been reading comics the past couple days. so tomorrow. for sure. i will definitely work in getting the draft done totally.

Mitsuri Kanroji: At a whopping 65%, I found that you were most compatible with Mitsuri! She’s fun, she’s loving, but most of all she loves you with every fiber of her being! Kyojuro Rengoku: Oh boy, here we go. Ok so scoring a very nice, very cool 35% we have Kyojuro Rengoku. I think Kyojuro would be very attracted to you simply because of how awesome you are! He’d be completely enamored by your poetry, your musical talents, and personality. He’d be extremely supportive of everything you did, almost to a fault. For example, he would push you to be the best at everything you did, especially your music. This is mainly because he loves listening to you play and to be honest he can’t get enough of watching you do what you love. It’s a little unsettling but while you play he would sit across from you and just watch. Without blinking. (*insert meme of guy screaming at cat to BLINK MF BLINK*) but he’s not going to because he doesn’t want to miss a single thing. Will suggest that you teach him, and if you agree he will become so dedicated that it will honestly frighten you. (Live by the bass, die by the bass). Kyojuro is intense but he makes up for it by bringing you food. The two of you have single-handedly supported the bento box industry, nearly crippling it actually. If you ever have a difficult day he is there right by your side with food, support, and love. Kyojuro is another one that cuddling skills surpass all others, as he is much tall than you he has no issue in scooping you up and keeping you right beside him all night. Get comfortable because he has an iron grip. In conclusion I believe he would the first to say “I love you” and he’d rather die than not tell you everyday. 10/10 fucking wholesome, I’m bringing champagne to the reception.

How far into modern music do you think Alastor would go? I can't imagine him listening to mondern pop, but maybe he would at least give a shot to things in the 50/60?? I just can't imagine him not having so many music opinions, all of them a bit out of date. Do you think that he thinks "queen" were promising upstarts? He loves music and, though not his type, wouldn't he at least listen to a bit¿?

I do think Alastor actually kept up with music for a while after his death—and with tech too, at least the tech that interested him. In life, he was on the cutting edge—he didn't just use the newest, hottest technology, he worked with it, he was a pioneer in a completely new field of media and so deeply enmeshed in the industry that it formed the basis of his soul's identity in death. Going from "I'm so cutting edge you'll bleed if you touch me" to "if it wasn't invented before the 26th of December in 1933 at 3:12 p.m. I will hiss like a vampire exposed to sunlight if you try to make me use it" is a harsh change, and I don’t buy it. It makes more sense if we assume there must have been a transition period during which he lost his enthusiasm for keeping up with the latest and greatest and slowly withdrew into the past.

Same goes for music. When he first arrived, he probably soaked up new music like a sponge. What about beloved musicians who had died too young—how many of them had ended up in Hell, and had they produced new music since they died? What strange mutations of jazz were cropping up down here where people who were familiar with the earliest iterations of the genre were trickling in and it had evolved and progressed in near isolation from the latest developments in the living world? Are there medieval bards playing covers of "Royal Garden Blues" on the hurdy-gurdy? Who else has played new versions of songs he knows? Who does he get in contact with in the next few years to ensure he gets a steady supply of new songs by his favorite artists still in the living world, either in the form of smuggled-in phonograph records or new arrivals who learned the songs and can now share them in Hell? What songs that have been forgotten for centuries can he learn? What musical genres are unique to Hellish culture? Where are all the artists and styles and genres he's interested in going next?! He's got to find out!

I've got two different headcanons for when that changed.

In the fic verse I'm writing, due to Circumstances, Alastor spent roughly all of the 70s being a depressed lump and the 80s in the Cannibal Colony. Those years where he withdrew from the world are when he stops keeping up with both technology and music. By the time he starts trying to engage with broader Hellish culture again, it’s been a couple of decades, everything on the radio sounds different and weird, and rather than trying to catch up he just kinda defaults back to what he’s used to, which peters out in the mid-60s.

In less-fic-verse more-canon headcanons, I think it was a gradual tapering off over the same time period. I’m restraining myself from going all The Psychology Of How Humans Develop Their Tastes In Music, but the short version is that, VERY BROADLY, people’s tastes tend to develop & solidify in adolescence/young adulthood—anything that came before then is old-fashioned and boring and anything that comes after that is weird and sounds like noise. Alastor, who’s All About Music, can keep up with new trends longer, but slowly the newest hottest sound will evolve out of what he’s able to hear as Good Music. Just, over the years, there will be fewer and fewer new musicians that are playing in a way that he likes. I figure it’ll be about the 70s before all the popular music makes him go “eh, they don’t make it like they used to,” and from there he sticks with what sounds good to him.

Now, in either one of these scenarios, I think there’s still some modern music that he’ll enjoy, but for the most part it’s going to be music that sounds closer to what he’s familiar with. So like, swing revival as a genre. Generic lounge jazz would bore him, and so would jazz of the “pushing so hard on the boundaries of music that you have to be neck-deep in the last 60 years of jazz history just to understand what they’re doing” variety, but modern big band-style jazz would appeal. He might listen to some modern ska when it swings more toward the “big brass sections” side of things rather than the “punk rock” side of things. He’d dislike electro swing that’s like “chops up songs he heard in the 30s and sets them over a drum machine” but he’d like electro swing that’s like “composes original modern swing that’s good enough to make up for the fact that there’s a synthesizer in the background.” Vintage style covers of modern songs would appeal to him, and no I’m not talking about “Postmodern Jukebox” as if they’re the only folks on the planet who’ve ever done that, I’m talking about “Alastor goes to a jazz club twice a month to join jam sessions and sometimes the musicians there go ‘hey we heard this great new song on the radio, listen to this’ *two demons play Uptown Funk on a sax and a piano.*”

And I think he’d put in an effort for musical theater no matter WHAT genre it’s in. We see him hear Charlie’s song once and immediately perform a cover of it, and Charlie’s song is definitely way outside of the kinds of genres he’d be inclined to listen to, except that it’s musical theater style. So—would Alastor listen to industrial rock? No. Would he watch and enjoy Repo! The Genetic Opera? Hell yeah. Would Alastor listen to hip hop? No. Would he watch and enjoy Hamilton? Hell yeah.

Musical theater might be the best way to ease him into modern music tbh. Get him into a few musicals he likes in spite of the modern sound and use them as a stepping stone to branch out to similar-sounding modern music.

As for Queen—honestly I don’t think he’d think about Queen. Almost half a dozen folks now have asked me specifically about that—but what about Queen tho, do you think he’d at least think Queen is good?—and like I just don’t think he’d care lmfao. Why is Queen always the first and only band people wanna know his opinion of? He’d like that the music video for “Radio Gaga” uses clips from a movie he saw while he was alive, and the lyrics would secretly make him a little emotional, but he’d dislike the song itself because they couldn’t even be assed to have a real human play the drums; and for their other songs he’d be like “yeah, that’s music.”

Here is a good video on it its essentially just Gatorade and monster and then a shit ton of sour candy/powders/etc but we replaced the monster with white claw. Its good tho even if you don't put alcohol in it last month parkwr had a series of mental breakdowns that involved us making battery acid at 3 in the morning and then just driving around listening to folk punk and hyperpop. Its a good drink to make if you want to have that classic addict experience of putting things in your body and being like "I dont care! I dont care what happens to me and I dont care about my health! I like this Because its bad for me" but you're trying to stay sober/avoid actual substances

Herald: Student/Mentor type of relationship. I dig that we can kinda develop it with him, and he is a good student! Precious boy, 10/10, would teach again to beat my ass in the future. He is gonna make Berath proud some day!

Steel: She really tried to have a better relationship with that old fella, even back in the day. She has enough enemies as it is, she does not need any more. And hey, now there is time to catch up on some stuff. Also, fellow dog friend. And if there is anything easy to bond over, it’s cute animals. Now, as to more random headcanons about her. This is gonna be all over the place, just a warning.

- Guess her Suit Design from her first Villian name idea.

- Escaped the Farm when she was 17, probably, highly likely by blowing something up. She got enough lessons to teach her to be a Wannabe MacGyver, and she put that knowledge to use.

- Hitched a ride with a group of Cross country travelers that didn’t ask any questions about her. She picked up her last name and smoking habit from them.

- She picked her first name because it is not a real one. Just how she isn’t a real human. Later it did appear in a game tho.

- She does smoke, at first just cigarettes. Nowadays though?

- She is a Villian. A Gentleman Villian as much as she tries. A classy Thief, to juxtapose her... usual self. She smokes Pipe.

- Also doesn’t smokes Tobacco. Smokes Tea leafs. Better than weed, trust me.

- Tried to train an Irish accent on herself. She can pull it off very convincingly.

- Can insult you in 21 different languages. And will insult you in 21 different languages.

- Is 30, looks like 25, dressed like 18. She didn’t really get her Teenage phases and needs to catch up somehow.

- Wants the truth to be out in the open. And maybe, just maybe, would not mind to see certain people dead. Would never kill anyone herself though. And keeps people safe as much as she can.

- Tries to be Leverage type of Villian. (Leverage being a series, btw, about Criminals grouping together to take down big corporations that get away with illegal shit with their very own illegal methods, very good series, highly reccomend it)

- Tech savvy, but tries to get to know the Underworld slowly as well. For now though, she has Bo for that.

- Would love to have a pet, but knows she does not have the time for one. For now. She already knows what she would get though. She would try and get a difficult case, a stray dog or cat nobody want’s to take care of.

- Met Ortega probably on one of his Missions. She was just hanging out in a Crackden at the time, not up to much, homeless and just drifting along in life in obscurity. Then she just saw this guy barging in, electrical lightning all around the place, getting himself into a pretty flashy fight with a Villian who was also high on crack, and she was impressed, getting curious about the guy. Ortega does not remember their first meeting. She does. Their real first meeting included her trying her best to get dramatic timing right and... charging in to save the day. In the end, she did not make the BEST first impression. She did get an ass kicking, because she had never been in mass fights before. She was used to 1 on 1, more than anything else. But she did make an impression. 

- Drinks coffee disgustingly sweet. 1/3 is syrup.

- Wants to travel the world at some point.

- Listens mostly to Synthwave, Irish Folk Punk, Shanties and Symphonic Rock. Niche music only. 

- Currently has so much money from robbing Criminals, she doesn’t know what to do with it all. Hire more Henchmen? Work out the tech? Buy information? Buy stones for her collection? Fill her shitty apartment with literal treasure just because she can? So much money. So many choices. She settles on more tea.
