sometimes i think abt how my parents’ love story sounds like completely fanfic trope-ified nonsense. they got married twice. the first time was a courthouse wedding on like two days notice so they could sign a lease for a better cheaper apartment a few days later. the second time was a “real” wedding w friends and family back east over a year later. they went to the same tiny liberal arts college, had the same friends, were both history majors just two years apart, even took a class together!! and yet didnt know each other until afterwards, when they met in a whole other state. when they met the first time my mom was out w her friends in a bar and my dad asked her out and she was like no im with my friends im not gonna leave them. hit me up some other time. and he ran into her again and asked her out and she said yes. they started dating like a month before my dad moved to the other side of the country for grad school, and this was when long distance calls were more expensive and they were both broke grad students so they could only call at like 2am when it was cheaper. they wrote lots and lots of letters. my mom followed him out west. the first page of his phd dissertation makes me cry every time i read it bc he thanks her and it’s so sweet it hurts!!!
anyways i love them but they literally sound fake. like what do you mean you got married twice

Just sharing two of my favorite photos from 2023, but I also really need to just vent a little. The past year was a trying one for me.
There were some positives, for sure, and I've already written about those elsewhere. Today, however, I want to unload some of the more stressful things. I don't plan on going into a ton of detail, but I think I need to say it somewhere because I haven't been in a good place.
Work
The biggest source of stress for me has been losing my job at the end of June. I made a big move and left my finance job of 15 years to work for a non-profit media company in early 2022, and I got laid off about 18 months later. Make no mistake here: I loved that job and all the people I worked with. It was kind of heartbreaking to leave a place that made me feel so welcome. In the time since then, I've applied to a ton of jobs, and I've had only one interview. The interview that I was able to get wasn't even through the traditional application method—I had a friendly rapport with a recruiter and managed to land an interview that went all the way to its final round. Unfortunately, I didn't get that job and it was crushing. The little bit of savings I had has been depleted, and my unemployment ends in a few weeks. Job searching is fundamentally broken and it doesn't appear to be improving.
I've always struggled to get paid photo gigs, and despite what I'd consider to be a solid catalog of work, it has been difficult to consistently get in front of people who can offer paid opportunities. To that point, I had 4 paid concert gigs last year, out of 26 gigs total. I did have a handful of photography gigs that were not live music related, and I'm incredibly grateful for those, because they've helped to keep my rent paid for a little longer. Still, these are only occasional drops of income that aren't sustainable. I don't know what to do, and I'm pretty exhausted.
Relationships
Last year was possibly one of the loneliest years I can remember. Thankfully, my best friendships are still intact and I don't see that changing. However, there were just a lot of transitions that were starting to settle in for me. Most of my friends are married and/or have children, and quite a few of them have moved away too. It doesn't mean the friendships have dissolved—they're just different now and can't be maintained in quite the same way. Unfortunately, I still find myself occasionally revisiting abandoned friendships from years ago and grieving in one way or another—usually by having a flash of anger and then disappointment.
Romantic relationships were nonexistent. In fact, I essentially swore off of dating early in the year after a particularly demoralizing experience. Losing my job, of course, cemented that hiatus for me.
Professional relationships have also struggled. My attempts to nurture new relationships with artists, editors, and creative staff for photo work were fruitless. I did have a couple of people who successfully recommended me for work, but my own personal outreach was unsuccessful.
Outlook
I have made an effort to take the time and look back on the good things that have happened. I don't have selective memory about the good and bad things, but the bad things have been a mess. I don't know how I'll pay rent next month. If I manage to pay that, then the month after that becomes the new major concern, and so on. This is worse than paycheck to paycheck—there are no paychecks.
When friends casually mention things like plans for kids and marriage to me, I no longer confidently believe either of those things are in my future. Instead, I feel unlovable.
My sleep schedule is completely upside down now, and I don't leave my apartment for days at a time. I'm tired, and I would like to have one bit of security back.
On the very, very slim chance that you've reached the end of this, I applaud you. Part of the reason this is here is because I don't think very many people will check.
I hope that whatever 2023 was for you, 2024 ends up being better.

WORLD POPULATION DAY - July 11
HISTORY: On 11th July 1987, the world population touched 5 billion, which sparked an interest among people about the fast-growing population. In 1989, the governing body of United Nations Development Programme decided to observe World Population Day every year on 11th July. The main aim to establish this day was to understand how urgent it is to pay attention to the issues associated with world population, and enhance awareness about health, finances, reproduction, and many more such topics.
In December 1990, the resolution 45/216 made it final that every year people will celebrate 11th July World Population Day. With this day being established, The United Nations General Assembly aims to pay attention to and increase awareness about the issues faced by population, including environment and development.
On 11th July 1990, more than 90 countries marked this day as World Population Day. Ever since then, many other countries, organizations and institutions have recognized this day, and celebrate it along with civil society and government.
FACTS ABOUT WORLD POPULATION:
▪️The current population of the world is around 8.1 billion.
▪️To reach 8 billion population from 7 billion, it took the world 12 years.
▪️In European Union, the population of women is 5% more than men.
▪️Covid-19 took about 2 million people in Europe.
▪️World’s two most populous countries are China and India.
▪️The world reached 3 billion population in 1960.
▪️The top five populous countries are India, China, USA, Indonesia and Pakistan.
▪️World Population Day is celebrated on 11th July, every year.
OVERPOPULATION: CONSEQUENCES
▪️Deforestation
▪️Unemployment
▪️Immigration
▪️Resource Depletion
▪️Poverty
▪️Pandemics & Epidemics
▪️Climate Change
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO CELEBRATE WORLD POPULATION DAY?
As discussed earlier, the aim of celebrating World Population Day is to increase awareness about the rising population of the world, and the problems associated with it. However, to go in depth of this aim, let’s understand the objectives for celebrating this day.
▪️To empower and protect youth, including both girls and boys.
▪️To provide detailed and right information about sexuality, reproduction and responsibilities.
▪️Spread awareness about unwanted pregnancies, early childbirth and pregnancy related diseases and dangers.
▪️To avoid early-age marriages and wait until both partners know their separate responsibilities.
▪️To remove stereotypes and discrimination based on sex, caste, race, gender, and more.
▪️Raise awareness about Sexually Transmitted Disease (STDs), its consequences and other such infections.
▪️Ensure access to basic and primary education for all girls and boys.
▪️Provide friendly, non-judgmental and enough reproductive health services specialists to guide men, women, and couples.

HOW CAN WE CELEBRATE 11TH JULY 2024?
Every year on World Population Day, policy makers, advocates, grassroot organizers, government, leaders and others come together and discuss the steps they should take in respect to that year’s theme. There are many ways in which people celebrate this day every year. Let’s see some:
▪️Schools: In schools, children are taught about the significance of this day, followed by World Population Day activities. Students are asked to creatively think and make slogans on World Population Day, draw paintings and more.
▪️College/University Level: Many students take part in debates and conversations regarding how they can, as individuals help save the environment from being overly populated.
▪️Organizations: Many non-profit organizations and other institutions do volunteer work by reaching out to the people that lack primary education, to educate them. This sometimes also includes physically visiting sites, talking to people, educating them about over-population, spreading sexual awareness, and more.
▪️Social media: In a world where millions of people have access to social media, people use the power and spread awareness. This is often done by posting quotes on World Population Day and sharing creative slogans for World Population Day.
Following are some more activities that can be done to observe world population day.
▪️Firstly it is important to educate yourself with the rising population statistics across the world.
▪️Understand the problems associated with the increasing population.
▪️Check for the solutions for the increasing population.
▪️Educate others by conducting awareness campaigns in your locality.
▪️Emphasize family planning.
▪️The rights for family planning has to be understood and should be shared to others too.
▪️Educate the less privileged sector of people around you, because awareness is one important factor that will help to maintain the population growth.
▪️Educate the students at school regarding the demographics.
▪️Donate to organizations that focus on dealing with the population issues
▪️Public contests can be conducted addressing the major issues associated with population rise in your locality
▪️TV channels and news channels broadcast various programs related to the importance of family planning. That can be watched and you can also help others to get access to these free programs.
▪️Donate and work for the education of children specially girl child
▪️Work towards gender equality
▪️Importance of maternal health also can be specified through seminars and presentation

N Chandrababu Naidu's Strategies for Alleviating Poverty and Reducing Socioeconomic Inequalities in Andhra Pradesh
N Chandrababu Naidu, the former Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, is widely recognized for his commitment to reducing poverty and addressing socioeconomic disparities in the state. During his tenure, TDP implemented various strategies and policies aimed at uplifting marginalised communities, enhancing economic opportunities, and fostering inclusive growth.
Under N Chandrababu Naidu's leadership, the Andhra Pradesh government unveiled Vision 2029, a comprehensive plan outlining the development goals for the state. The vision aimed to achieve inclusive growth and eradicate poverty by promoting economic diversification, infrastructure development, and social empowerment. It emphasised the need to bridge regional disparities and ensure equitable access to resources and opportunities across all sections of society. Delve into the official TDP website for more political schemes and achievements of TDP.
Recognizing the importance of economic development in poverty reduction, N Chandrababu Naidu focused on attracting investments and promoting industrialization in Andhra Pradesh. His government introduced investor-friendly policies, streamlined bureaucratic procedures, and established special economic zones and industrial corridors. These measures not only stimulated economic growth but also generated employment opportunities, particularly in sectors such as information technology, manufacturing, and agriculture. Get into the official TDP website for local news and live updates on TDP activities.
To empower the youth and reduce unemployment, Telugu Desam Political Party initiated skill development programs and vocational training initiatives. The government collaborated with industries and educational institutions to impart relevant skills and enhance employability. Through skill development schemes, thousands of youth received training in various sectors, thereby increasing their chances of securing decent employment and breaking the cycle of poverty.
N Chandrababu Naidu's administration launched several social welfare programs targeting marginalised communities and vulnerable sections of society. The "Chandranna Bima" scheme provided insurance coverage for workers in the unorganised sector, offering financial protection in the event of accidents or disabilities. Similarly, the "Chandranna Pelli Kanuka" program aimed to alleviate the financial burden of marriage expenses for economically weaker sections by providing financial assistance and essential items.
Tumblr media
Recognizing the significance of agriculture in rural livelihoods, NCBN implemented initiatives to improve agricultural productivity and enhance farmers' incomes. The government focused on irrigation projects, watershed management, and modern agricultural practices. Additionally, he introduced the "Rythu Bandhu" scheme, which provided financial support to farmers by granting them investment assistance per acre of cultivated land, thereby ensuring a steady income source for agricultural communities.
N Chandrababu Naidu emphasised the development of robust infrastructure as a catalyst for economic growth and poverty reduction. His government undertook numerous projects to improve connectivity, such as the construction of roads, bridges, and ports. The ambitious "Amaravati" project aimed to build a world-class capital city with state-of-the-art infrastructure, creating opportunities for investment and employment.
N Chandrababu Naidu's strategies for poverty alleviation and socioeconomic equality in Andhra Pradesh showcased his commitment to inclusive growth. By focusing on economic reforms, industrialization, skill development, social welfare programs, rural development, and infrastructure, he aimed to uplift marginalised communities and create a more equitable society. Although the effectiveness of these initiatives varied, they laid the foundation for progress and emphasised the importance of sustained efforts to tackle poverty and reduce socioeconomic disparities in the long run.

It’s impossible to believe that in a population of over 300 million, only 49 million job opening have happened since 1989.  There is absolutely no way for this statistic to make sense.
There’s apparently 200,000 McDonalds jobs in the US, most of which have turn over in a few months. So, that means 4 times a year, so 800,000 jobs a year.  Let’s round it up to a clear million, because some people don’t last 3 months.
So, in 34 years, that’s 34 million job openings.
It doesn’t mean federal employees, because the Democrats increased that from 12 million to 19 million.
It doesn’t mean unemployment, because the Democrats have a horrendous record of creating unemployment.
They have a terrible rate for GDP growth, often having negative GDP growth.
So, I honestly cannot fathom what statistic they are using.
Oh, found the statistic
Tumblr media
The question is how can they have job growth while also having unemployment growth?  The only way this statistic makes any sense if it’s people taking a second job.
Now, onto the rest of them:
Democrats:  Against Gay Marriage until 2016.  Trump has been gay friendly his entire life.  Do the Republicans have a good track record on it?  No, about the same as the Democrats.  Take that Trump voters.
Women’s Rights:  There is no good statistic to talk about the success of Women’s Rights. Oh, how about women with university degrees?
Tumblr media
Oh, what’s that?  Steady growth for both sexes since the 1940′s?
The specific comment seems to be about Kavanaugh.  The accusing kept  changing, getting downright silly.  The accuser waited 30 years, and at that point they could not find a single person who could say they were both at the same party.
How about this, instead?  Democrats blocked the first nomination of a black woman to the US Supreme Court.  Because they are progressive, and care about women and minorities.
Civil Rights:  The Democrats were literally the party of Slavery, the Black Codes, and the KKK.  The Democrats literally opposed every single civil right Republicans gave to black people.
Weird saying that abortion and birth control are reproductive rights.  Well, starting from the basics, Republicans are not trying to outlaw condoms, which are the most commonly used method of birth control.  The Democrats are claiming that the Republicans are trying to ban the reproductive pill, but the truth is that they are looking into the questionable safety of it.  It was only ever allowed because of Feminism, not because it was proven safe.  So, congratulations on the Democrats for supporting Big Pharma lying about the safety of their treatments.
As for abortion, there are as many women outspokenly against abortion as there are women that are pro-abortion.  So, can’t call it women’s rights.
Republicans:  Tax breaks for everyone.  Democrats:  Tax increases for everyone.  The framing is completely fallacious, and shows a complete lack fo reading comprehension.
Both the Republicans and Democrats have supported the ultra-wealthy, while outliers in both parties are only ones that did anything to actually help people.  Since then, the Democrats have decided to attack the energy sector and send trillions of dollars overseas, which outstripped anything the Republicans have ever done against the poor.  Trump was that outlier that dramatically improves the lives of the poor.
Ah, yes, because Environment = Global Warming.  The Democrats have completely forgotten about every single environmental policy they claim to have been fighting for.
Supporting our partners in freedom” is the exact same rhetoric W. used to topple regimes around the world, and then the Democrats did the exact same thing.  Trump is the only President in living memory to not start any new wars and create a wave of peace agreements across the world.
By “treat Russia as enemy” they mean break treaties with Russia that gives it legitimate cause to start a war in Ukraine.  Very peace loving and progressive.
Democrats not only built the cages the children were kept in, but when they got power against they increased the kids in cages by 10x.  Trump used it as a temporary measure to make sure that the children were not being trafficked over as sex-slaves.  And Trump succeeded in dramatically reducing the number of children being trafficked.  Biden increased the kids in cages 10x, and brought child trafficking to a point far higher than any POTUS had ever seen.
“Common sense gun reform” ignores statistics, and creates laws that break the laws of physics.
Republicans oppose Federal involvement in healthcare, because it’s unconstitutional.  If Democrats wanted to create it in blue states, they would be able to do so without any resistance.  This means they honestly don’t care about creating it.
Tumblr media
If someone says they're voting Republican because they "care about the economy" they're either stupid, brainwashed, or lying.

How do you think the Cullen's would have turned out if they lived their natural human lives and not forever frozen at an age / the state they were in? For example I think Carlisle would always be kind and tame but perhaps not as idealistic. Rose might grow bitter of the world since even if Royce didn't assault her I can't imagine he would be the loving husband she wanted. Edward, who watched his parents die and was dying himself, might not be as moody and miserable. Who knows about Jasper and Alice and Esme. Emmett would probably stay the same. Bella, if she never met the supernatural, probably would just be a quiet old soul but otherwise not mal adjusted. I can't even guess about Renesmee haha since she has no personality next to being ~inhumanly special.
I mean, sadly, we know the answer: they wouldn't be around very long and would have died miserably. There's no such thing as a natural human life, well, I suppose you can die of old age, but the fate of the Cullens didn't have that in store.
But let's get into it just the same.
Alice
Had James not come across Alice, she likely still would have been turned at some point by her maker, who seems to have been very fond of her. It was just a matter of time. The difference being that, instead of being a newborn completely on her own, her maker would have been there. This is an Alice very unlikely to see Jasper or the Cullens in her future, though who knows, Carlisle and her maker might very well cross paths someday due to the similarity of their work.
But I doubt Alice would ever end up on the diet.
For Alice to remain human, she can never have been sent to that asylum. In which case we have two options a) she's not sent to an asylum b) she's sent to a different asylum.
In the first case, Alice is more than likely murdered by her father. This is what got her sent off in the first place: she was running around town claiming that her father had murdered her mother and now planned to murder her. To shut the hysterical woman up, her father sent her to an insane asylum. Which effectively got her out of his life just as he wished.
If that didn't occur to him, then yes, Alice likely falls gravely ill or has some unfortunate accident that she cannot prevent.
Otherwise, Alice is sent to some other insane asylum, likely still loses all her memories due to electroshock therapy, and probably dies very young due to poor health conditions. The life she does live is utterly miserable.
Bella
Bella dies in a parking lot, she's hit by a truck out of control. Otherwise, Bella dies in Port Angeles, she's raped and her body abandoned in a dumpster. Otherwise, Bella is eaten by a vampire.
And if Bella miraculously survives all of that, I imagine her struggle with depression continues throughout high school and into college. In college, she may meet someone who catches her interest, in which case she becomes completely codependent on them for a sense of validation (as she did Edward and Jacob in canon).
The relationship is a toxic mess, ends in a very messy breakup, and Bella goes through her New Moon phase a bit later. She might finally get therapy and survive this very dangerous phase in her life, at which point, she finally starts the slow recovery from depression.
I imagine Bella will be struggling with depression though for all of her life and, if left untreated, it might very well kill her.
Carlisle
Had Carlisle not been turned this means the vampire likely drained him. Carlisle dies at the head of the mob, this sentences the other Cullens to death as well as now no one will turn them.
Let's say Carlisle wasn't as fast that day. He had a leg cramp, or something. Not being well in front of the others, he's not hit by the vampire first. This increases his chances of death, as the vampire seems to have killed the rest he took a bite of, but he could survive.
Carlisle lives with the haunting guilt that the one time he tracks down a true demon he brought death to his parish. Several died due to his actions, the demon got away, and now there's no sign of it. Carlisle completely and utterly failed.
This is probably the final straw for Carlisle. Demons exist, but they are beyond his capacity to hunt, this is a job for God and not mere mortal men. He stops the demon hunts, stops the witch hunts, and focuses himself strictly on helping the community and preaching.
He lives knowing his father would have continued to be sorely disappointed in everything he does.
Carlisle likely marries within a few years, now that his father is dead and he's the established head of the parish. He may or may not like his wife all that much, but he has a responsibility, and having a wife and children is one of those. I imagine that they either are somewhat fond of each other or quietly tolerate one another.
If Carlisle has a son, the son is trained as a priest, sent to seminary as he was, and set to inherit the parish. If he has only daughters, then it will be her husband who will inherit the parish.
When Carlisle dies he is likely remembered very fondly by the parish for the good he did for the community. No one talks about the demon hunting disaster. He's buried next to his father.
Edward
Edward dies of the Spanish Influenza in 1918.
Had he never caught it, and thus never come across Carlisle, I imagine he lives a somewhat ordinary life. He goes to university somewhere very well established, perhaps even one of the Ivy League schools, I can see him training to become a lawyer. He either joins his father's law firm or, if his father's not a lawyer, some law firm in Chicago where he does quite well for himself.
He probably courts then marries some affluent, well to do, woman who hits all the checkmarks he expects from society. They probably get on quite well.
The market then crashes in 1929, when Edward's only 29 years old, and Edward gets to live through the depression. Edward may be lucky enough to retain his wealthy, however, he very well could not have been. Edward is now unemployed, destitute, and miserable just like the rest of the country.
I imagine this is very hard on him, he becomes very bitter and resentful, and as he desperately tires to find work it just gets worse. Edward becomes mired in cynicism.
Then the war hits, Edward is now 41, and he's too old to enlist in the army. He feels a sense of nostalgic bitterness that, once again, he can't go fight the good fight and has to cheer from the sidelines. Nonetheless, the economy starts to recover thanks to the war, Edward recovers with it and things get better.
Edward lives his ordinary human life and, perhaps, lives to sometime in the 1990's.
Emmett
Emmett is eaten by bears.
Had he not happened to be in the mountains that day then, likely, some other unfortunate accident would have befallen him. He's a mountain man, that's a dangerous life.
He gets eaten by bears, eaten by mountain lions, injured somehow and then dies, hit by a tree that he cut down, there are so many possibilities.
If he does live to an older age then he becomes the gruff mountain man stereotype that we all know. I imagine he remains a very friendly, cheerful, man, probably marries some local girl and has a very large family.
Esme
Esme kills herself. With the death of her child, that was the path she chose, and had she not been turned she would have been successful.
However, had her child lived, I imagine her life would have continued on the path it was on. She would have been a single mother, working as a teacher, and raising her child.
They would have been poor, but Esme seemed determined to make this work, and was doing an excellent job at it.
Perhaps, in time, she would meet the right man and remarry. However, I think that would take a lot of time as the whole issue was that she was hung up on the ideal of Dr. Carlisle Cullen who she met when she was sixteen and never saw again.
Regardless, she's far more of a real person grounded in reality than Esme the vampire ever was.
Jasper
Had Jasper not come across Maria, he likely would have died in the war. Many, many, people died in the civil war, and Jasper would be far from alone in that.
If not, he would have returned to the ravaged south, and likely found himself facing unemployment and very difficult times for wherever he came from.
Jasper would likely pull through, we know he has lived through hell in canon and pulled through there, though changed for life by the horrors of the civil war that will now never quite leave him.
Renesmee
Renesmee is never born. Her father is a demon a hundred years older than her mother. There is no chance that Bella becomes pregnant with Edward's human child, let alone his vampire child.
If Bella does become pregnant with a vampire child, she's likely been raped by Joham. Bella dies in confusion and agony, Renesmee is born into this world utterly alone, is picked up by Serena, and becomes yet another sister of Nahuel's.
Renesmee lives the miserable life that all of Nahuel's siblings do.
Rosalie
Rosalie is gang raped to death by Royce and his friends and dies in agony in an alley. Had she not come across Royce that night then likely, after they marry, he at some point rapes her to death and murders her.
The likelihood of Rosalie, with her parent's ambitions and her looks, of not marrying Royce is very small.
Even then, Royce is in town in general, that means all she needed was one bad night. Which, in canon, she had.
However, let's say she lives and Royce wasn't interested in her hand, she marries option number two. As you note, her marriage still likely isn't fulfilling. Rosalie is there to be beautiful and poised, to have tea with the ladies in society, and watch as a governess raises her children.
This is the world she lives in, and she accepts that, but over time she becomes increasingly bitter and resentful of this thing we call life.
TL;DR Remember, there's no escape from the pit of despair we call Twilight

Joachim Murat: his youth in Quercy.
His steps often joined those of Napoleon. Born 250 years ago in Labastide, Marshal of France, the king of Naples remained, all his life, attached to his native land. His native village now bears his name: Labastide-Murat.

Joachim Murat en uniforme de sous-lieutenant au 12e Régiment de Chasseurs en 1792 (Age 25), by Jean-Baptiste Paulin Guérin, 1835
His name will later be inscribed on the Arc de Triomphe de l'Etoile. On April 5, 1791, three young people from Quercy (Murat, Bessieres and Ambert), appointed by the Lot Directory to be part of the King's constitutional guard, whose creation has just been voted by the Legislative Assembly, take the road to Paris. Coming from a family of small social status, Murat will reach the highest military glory thanks to the Republican wars and the prestigious imperial epic.
He was born on a causse with unexplored abysses
Joachim Murat was born on March 25, 1767, at La Bastide-Fortunière, a village in the Causse de Gramat. This physical environment has a certain connection with the future King of Naples' life and character. “La Bastide, a small village on the high plateau, looks like a fortress commanding the country. This majestic appearance amidst the drought, the almost desolation of the limestone soil which unexplored abysses hollow out in some places is the very image of Murat's life, a life full of contrasts where the good and the worst intertwine, where the peak honors and glory are next to disasters, mentions Marcel Dupont in his work on Murat. The sometimes violent wind is still a striking image of the marshal's mind, always filled with clouds and where hopes, vast projects, fury and annihilation collide day and night. Here is summarized in a few strokes, the prodigious and fatal destiny of this horseman who would have no equal to descend like a windstorm on the enemy troops.
His mother Jeanne's favorite child
Yet he seemed destined for a peaceful existence. Murat comes from a family that has lived in the town for more than three centuries. They are hard-working peasants, exploiting poor soil in harsh winters. How could a king arise from this modest environment more conducive to the development of country virtues than to warlike exploits?
This required the ardor of his youth, which will never leave him, but also the revolutionary upheaval. His father exploited the lands of "a few enlightened minds" in the village. Not being the owner, he is the manager, receiving earnings proportional to the crops. These are certainly satisfactory because the couple have a large house in the center of the town. This is the mother’s domain. The ground floor has been converted into an inn and the floor is divided between the family apartment and a few rooms for passing guests. This energetic woman who runs the inn is a caring mother. The good Jeanne Loubières, whom he will adore all his life, in fact, makes of the youngest of her eleven children, her favorite. By her constant presence, her desire to provide Joachim with an education, that goes beyond that of his environment, she will shape this son to the point that he will never forget his childhood.
With his curly hair and cheerful face, he's a rowdy kid, sometimes a brawler, as it should be to be respected in this country where endurance is proof of character. His time at La Bastide-Fortunière school made a good impression on his teachers: he is an average student but whose qualities of camaraderie and friendliness are recognized. His loving mother, who has deep religious feelings, thinks that the day will come when young Joachim will enter the Orders and may be parish priest of La Bastide.
His great pleasure is to lead alone the horses to the village trough. At the age when a horse seems formidable to a child, Joachim, who has an unusual vigor, already knows how to subdue them.
An amazing ability to lead
These predispositions did not arouse any suspicion among his parents who obtained a scholarship to send him, at 10 years old, to the Saint-Michel college in Cahors. He will stay there for 8 years. It is there that he will have as a comrade Jean Bessières from Prayssac, a future Marshal of the Empire. An unwavering friendship is born between these two men who would become close to the emperor.
Far from La Bastide, the young Murat discovers unknown horizons which open up new appetites for him. His intelligence is real. But as soon as he crosses the threshold of the class, he takes a singular ascendancy on his comrades, even develops an astonishing capacity to lead. How to blame him? If he goes too far for his age, he knows how to repent, implore and become very sweet again.
His whole life, he will use these weapons. Many contemporaries believe that he is completely sincere. Going from anger to tenderness, from elation to dejection, he is already and will remain, impulsive, even excessive in everything. Not without kindness and generosity.
At 20, he joins the cavalry
At the age of eighteen, he joins the Lazarists' seminar in Toulouse. But wearing the cassock does not make the seminarian. And this handsome young man of 1.85 meters, with a pleasant smile, already leads, outside the establishment, a private life the "good fathers" ignore. Here comes an important moment in Murat's life: his military engagement. It is allowed to think, with Jean Tulard, that after a quarrel, our too fiery seminarian was excluded from the University and dreading his father, takes advantage of the passage of the Cavalry of the Ardennes regiment to sign up for, he says "a life that does not displease him". In fact, the new Chasseur is "thrilled". He quickly stood out for his ability to train the most reticent horses and quickly became sergeant*.
For the simple rider, the days are repetitive and gruelling. After an early awakening (at six o'clock), you must groom sick animals, currycomb and brush them before preparing fodder, water and oats. It is only after this daily work, at ten o'clock that a soup is distributed. Then the upkeep chores of the stables. Strict rules still from the Ancien Régime! Because already Parisian ideas are swarming in the garrisons.
Giving free rein to his temperament, his need to be a leader, Murat, who places a lot of hope in the new ideas, takes the lead of the discontented men of the Regiment. This behavior is little appreciated by his leaders: he is put on permanent leave and expelled from the army. Humiliated, he decides to go back to the Lot. We are in 1789.
Delivery Clerk in Saint-Céré
Very badly received by his father who cuts him off, he returns to Saint-Céré where he is hired as a delivery clerk. For a few months, he was enraged, champing at the bit with impatience, convinced that his place is not here. The villages are buzzing. He became aware of the real state of France, of the mounting demands of the campaigns. Murat takes advantage of this return to his native land to attend and participate in public meetings of local clubs.
The past winter has been harsh and long. The harvest was poor. Lack of food and unemployment strike everywhere. Castles see their dovecote burned down. " Here will be hanged the first inhabitant who will pay the rent to the lord," says a poster from a Cahors merchant. It’s the revolt. Louis XVI summons the Etats Généraux on May 1, 1789 in Versailles. In 1790, for the Fête de la Fédération on July 14, each department must appoint two to three delegates. You can imagine that Murat is volunteering! The sympathetic, sweet talking but proud young man speaks. And it is in Lotois dialect that he expresses himself in cafes, wishing to reach the greatest number. The Revolution is born: Joachim Murat, who is part of the Third Estate by his origins, tries to change public opinion according to events. Every Sunday, he goes to Cahors: he listens, he harangues the crowd. He is on the Montfaucon list and is chosen to represent the Lot department.
The republican patriot leaves for Paris
Murat, 23, can go and explore the capital. It’s the consecration.
A new man is born. After a secular mass celebrated by former Bishop Talleyrand, speeches on the Champ de Mars ignite the crowds. One hundred thousand Parisians came to celebrate the first anniversary of the Capture of the Bastille. A year later, returning to the army, he is appointed to the King's Constitutional Guard, to protect but also to monitor Louis XVI. Indignant, the protester manifests a flawless patriotic commitment, calling himself a "pronounced republican", facing "this hideout of royalists who gravitate around the king". But the wind turns, Robespierre falls. His revolutionary passion almost interrupted his meteoric career. Bitter and worried, he is put on leave and returns for some time to Quercy, "wanting to become a simple plowman again".
Aide de camp
Skeptical about his future, then dejected, Murat quickly reacts, helped by the deputy for Gourdon, Jean-Baptiste Cavaignac, who encourages him to return to Paris. It is on the night of 12 to 13 Vendémiaire (October 5, 1795) that Murat is put in contact with the First Consul who needs him. He orders him to save the Convention threatened by the royalist riot. Forty cannons are placed by Squadron Leader Murat around the Tuileries Castle. Three hundred royalists will be killed. The government of the Republic is saved again. As Tulard points out: "From now on the star of Murat will merge with that of Bonaparte". No more depression, finally power and glory.
Promoted Bonaparte's aide-de-camp, he leaves for the Italian Campaign, direction Marengo. There, "his clothes will be riddled with bullets", but they will know victory.
He becomes Napoleon I's brother-in-law
In 1800, he marries Caroline, the First Consul's youngest sister, becoming the brother-in-law of the future Napoleon I. This marriage will give Murat an outstanding position among the marshals of the Empire. Quickly, he is invited to move to the Château des Tuileries and becomes part of the close entourage of the new master of France.
The rouser of men from the imperial epic will remain kind to his family at La Bastide. Coming from a small inn in Quercy to fly with his squadrons across Europe and into Egypt, Murat seems like a legendary character. Chateaubriand will devote long passages to him in the "Mémoires d'Outre Tombe". He will be admired by Stendhal, Dumas and Balzac. Three words characterize the King of Naples: ardor, ambition and panache. If he remains the most magnificent rouser of men the imperial epic will produce, he will invest much into the Lot whose deputy he will become in 1803.
And he will show kindness for his whole family. Especially for his mother, for whom he will show a deep attachment: he sends her rosaries blessed by the Pope.
The portrait he has done of Jeanne in 1792 will never leave him. It will be with him, in his homes, in his tent during his campaigns and in Naples, in his palace. He will build a castle for his "La Bastide family" in his native village, modeled on the Palais de l'Elysée, where he had resided as governor of Paris.
The King of Naples dies executed on October 13, 1815.

[Translation is mine.
Note: I translated by ‘sergeant’ the grade of Maréchal des Logis, which is its equivalent in the cavalry (and nowadays in the Gendarmerie).
There is no right translation for “entraîneur d’hommes”, I hope “rouser” doesn’t seem too weird in English.]

Watch What Happens - Chapter 6
Chapter links: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
Summary: Arthur, an aspiring comedian, has struggled to find normalcy and compassion his entire life. Y/N, a hard-working paralegal and transplant to Gotham, has just been put on a case for the Wayne Foundation. When they meet, unexpected sparks fly.
Chapter warning: None
Words: 3,241

Y/N tried to avoid looking at her watch as she sat across from Matt, on the other side of his desk, taking dictation in shorthand. The last time she checked, probably five minutes ago, it was only 11:12 AM. Even as she wrote, catching every detail, her mind was willing the clock to go faster. She'd be meeting Arthur in under two hours. Her lips curved upwards at the thought of him.
Shortly after leaving him at the Newkirk station in Otisburg, after they'd gotten donuts, she'd realized the mistake she'd made in not getting his number. While it was true she'd continue to work in his area, she knew the chance she'd run into him a third time had been slim. Sure, he'd told her he lived on Anderson, wherever the hell that was, but that was it. She supposed she could have looked for his name on the buzzers of all the buildings on that street, if she was inclined to be a creep about it.
While she’d dated casually, it had been a long time since she'd experienced any sort of infatuation. She simply hadn't had time for it. In the seven or so years before she'd come to Gotham, she'd done legal work part-time and shared a house with her father, who'd been wasting away with dementia.
That had been the hardest period of her life, more difficult than her marriage amicably falling apart years prior. Her sister hadn’t been able to help much - she had a family of her own. And her mother had passed away shortly after her father’s diagnosis. It had been all on Y/N’s shoulders.
When she hadn't been at work, she'd been stuck in the daily grind of keeping her father calm, clean, and fed. It was never easy. The lack of time for herself had taken a toll on her. There were days when all she'd wanted was to be alone, but what she'd be left with was the same chores as always, and guilt for wishing it would end. When he died, she sold or donated most of her stuff and left.
Since moving, she appreciated not having anyone depend on her. Not having to answer to someone. Being on her own. Arthur had thrown a wrench into that. The feelings he’d stirred in her were unexpected. And lovely. But asking for his number then would have been leading them both on. She hadn't decided if she wanted him to pursue her - yet.
But if fate was going to throw an awkwardly charming, handsome guy at her three times, she wasn't going to argue.
The reason she'd been on that night's late train was the broken roller feed of the office photocopier. Multiple copies of motions that were over fifty pages long had to be made manually. She'd removed the high-heels from her aching feet and copied each page one by one. It had kept her aggravatingly late.
The laughter had gotten her attention, first. She'd assumed someone was having too good of a time. But when she'd seen him there, the clown with his hand over his mouth, it became obvious he was in pain. Once she saw the assholes in suits advancing on him, not helping hadn't been an option.
She'd been relieved to see Arthur again, but the circumstances made it bittersweet. The situation, the laminated card, his condition. It had clicked for her why he was shy and reserved. As soon as he'd taken off that damned wig, she'd known she would give him her business card.
"Y/N?" Matt's voice interrupted her thoughts. "Are you with me?"
She blinked. "Yeah, sorry.” Her knuckles popped as she stretched her fingers. “This letter is going on a little too long. My hand's starting to cramp.”
He leaned back in his chair and stretched his arms. "Yeah, you're right. We'll come back to it later." Spinning around, he grabbed the oversize mug of coffee sitting on the bookshelf behind him. "You look at that Wayne file yet? Sorry we didn't get to it earlier in the week."
"I've actually been trying to figure out how to talk with you about it," she said, furrowing her brow.
"Well, that's an odd thing to say."
She tapped her pen against her legal pad. "I've looked at the file extensively. Mostly, it's motions back and forth for continuances, eminent domain filings, petty bickering...” Her lips twisted in a grimace. “But there wasn't evidence of anything being claimed by either party."
"Evidence?" he asked. "The buildings are deathtraps."
"Only if you read the Wayne Foundation's motions,” she countered. "I went to one of them on Saturday, and-"
Matt put his arms on his desk and leaned forward. "You what?"
Rolling her eyes, she waved his concern off. "No one saw me. Just an old lady getting her paper. It doesn't matter." She watched as he pinched the bridge of his nose. "I'm not an architect or engineer, but those buildings aren't in the shape the foundation is claiming.
"They’ve also said the buildings are almost empty, but a lot of people still live in the one I visited." She wiggled her foot under the desk before continuing. Matt wouldn’t have a heart attack, right? "They're getting letters telling them they have to leave within ninety days or forfeit their belongings."
He tapped his hand on the desk, looking vacantly at the surface. "Do you have any of these letters?"
Hurriedly, she went to her desk to grab the file. "The woman who saw me gave me this,” she said over her shoulder. “Don't worry. She doesn't know where I work." She dug out the envelope and came back, handing it over.
Glancing at her, he took out the letter. His face remained calm as he read it. "It's not from any Wayne organization," he said. "They all have 'Wayne' in the name. I've never heard of Renew Corp."
"I know, but wouldn't this be a weird coincidence?" she asked.
After a minute or so, he stuffed the document back in the envelope. "You don't know what Renew Corp. is doing. You have one letter from one person."
Slight exasperation entered her voice. "And the fact the buildings aren't as described? I've been going to City Hall on my lunch breaks the last two days to look up code violations. Only one address had them, and that was seven years ago."
Matt nodded, wringing his hands lightly. His voice was low when he eventually spoke. "I need you to stop this inquiry."
She was stunned. "I beg your pardon? Have we met?"
"I'm serious, Y/N." He tossed the envelope in the garbage can under his desk, then looked at her. Despite what he was saying, his eyes were friendly. "We have a duty to our client. That's the Wayne Foundation, not these tenants. We can't go sniffing around on their behalf."
Heat filled her as she clenched her jaw. Disappointing didn't begin to cover how this conversation was turning out. "That wasn't what I was doing," she said, measuring her words. "I was trying to back up the foundation's claims. What do you want me to do? Provide photos of peeling paint and linoleum?"
He gestured dismissively. "You don't need to worry about that. The foundation's big enough. It'll get the land. The whole thing just needs to work its way through the courts."
Y/N flinched. "Why did you put me on this case? To do more paperwork? Why did you want me to go through it?"
"For context. You're good at your job. And, yes, it's paperwork, but it's important." He huffed. "The Wayne Foundation wants to open a medical clinic in that area. It needs to go smoothly. With all the cuts going on right now, unemployment... Think of the jobs it'll provide. The services it'll offer."
She shook her head, not answering. This was beginning to feel like the old boys network in her dinky little hometown.
After some time, Matt stood. "Let's take a break."
Taking the hint, Y/N left his office, closing the door behind her. This was the first time she'd been told to let an investigation go. She knew the Wayne Foundation was their biggest client. But it frustrated her that her firm was willing to look past what she'd found. She had enough experience in the field to witness questionable legal actions. None of them had threatened hundreds of people before.
"Hey," Patricia said from behind her desk, drawing Y/N's attention. "I heard what he said. Don't listen to him. Keep doing what you're doing.”
Y/N arched a brow at her. "I wasn't planning to stop."
“Good. He doesn't have to know." Patricia chuckled. "Well, until he does."
“I’ll remember your wise words when I’m in the unemployment line,” Y/N teased.
Patricia snorted, then folded her arms over her chest. "Now, tell me more about this date you're going on."
"I don't know if it's a date. I think it's a date." Laughing, Y/N shrugged. "I wouldn't mind it being a date." She considered her next words carefully, wanting to protect Arthur's privacy. "Like I said yesterday, I helped an acquaintance on the subway with his bags.” Y/N raised a finger when she saw Patricia’s mouth open. “And yes, before you ask, he’s good-looking. But too skinny for you, I think.” She sat on the corner of Patricia’s desk. “Anyhow, he invited me to pie to thank me. Should I bring you back a slice?"
"Don't worry about me. Just don't forget to come back." Patricia gave her a wink. “Promise?"
Y/N nodded back sharply. "Promise."
~~~~~
Before going outside, Y/N observed Arthur through the lobby windows. He was pacing between the building and the lamp post on the other side of the sidewalk. The expression on his face alternated between excitement and worry. And he was smoking like a man on his way to the gallows. It was sweet, but she wanted he'd be able to relax around her.
Letting her eyes rove over him, she saw he was wearing another loose sweater, gray this time, usual collared shirt peeking out at the top. That tan jacket. Admittedly, she was hoping he'd wear something that accentuated his narrow waist, the way his vest had on the subway. She knew she shouldn't have noticed it, given what had happened. But as they'd strolled down the street together, she hadn’t been able to help herself.
Arthur straightened and flicked away his cigarette when she stepped out, his face lighting up. "Hey." His gaze held hers. "How are you?"
"This morning was trying, but," she grinned, "the day’s much better now." The smile he wore in response was the widest she'd seen on him so far. Still bashful, but enough for her to notice his dimples and one crooked tooth. Get a grip, Y/N. She swallowed hard and pointed him to where they were headed. "There's a diner around the next corner. I've never had their pie, but I'm sure it's good."
They arrived within minutes. Arthur picked a booth for two in the corner next to a window. After removing his jacket and tossing it on the seat, he reached out to help Y/N out of her coat. And she let him.
A waitress came over immediately. "What'll you two be having?"
"Blueberry pie, please," Y/N said.
Arthur cleared his throat. "Just coffee."
When the server was out of sight, Y/N leaned forward. "How are you inviting me for pie and not ordering any?" She swatted his forearm playfully.
He moved his hands to his lap. "Sorry. I'm not usually hungry."
"You'll just have to try mine," she said. The left corner of his mouth lifted at that and he gave a slight nod.
She studied him, the small scar above his upper lip, the laugh lines on his face, the way the sunlight brought out the various tones of his chestnut locks. It was hard not to notice how stiffly he was sitting. He wanted to be there - she could see that in the way his green eyes admired her. But his body still radiated apprehension. How on earth could she ease his mind? Maybe being straightforward would be best. "Don't be anxious around me, Arthur. I wouldn't be here if I didn't want to be."
His shoulders loosened a little. "I don't mean to-" He stopped abruptly when the coffee and slice of pie were delivered. Grabbing the sugar dispenser, he put three servings into his mug, concentrating on his stirring. "I'm glad you came."
It was a small sentence, but Y/N sensed the effort if had taken for him to speak it. How much work had it taken for him to ask her out yesterday? She cut a piece of her pie. "So, I know you like sweets. You're a stand-up. And you work as a clown, I guess?" After tasting it, she offered the fork to Arthur.
There was only a moment’s hesitation before he smirked and took it from her. She wondered if his fingers skimming against hers were intentional. "That's my job. I'm a party clown. But I'm thinking of focusing on my comedy more." He took a bite. "This is good."
"It’s my favorite," she said. "You should tell me a joke. I’d love to hear one."
"All right." His forehead creased in concentration. "Um. Why did the old man like having insomnia?"
Y/N chewed thoughtfully, wondering where this was going. "Hm. I don't know. Why?"
"Because he didn't have to sleep with his wife." Arthur's eyes flicked to hers, his eyebrows raised slightly.
A short, sharp laugh escaped her. The joke hadn't disappointed. And his sudden boldness surprised her. She wanted to see more of it. "That was a good one, Mr. Fleck."
His face softened at that. After a moment, he asked, "What's your job?"
"I'm a paralegal." When she tried to offer the fork to him again, he politely declined.
"What's that?" he asked.
Good. If he didn't know what her job was, he'd probably not been in any legal trouble. "I work at a law firm. Prepare for hearings and trials. Do lots of paperwork. I investigate, too, though I think it annoys my boss." A small snort escaped her. "I go to meetings. It's all very mundane."
Arthur placed another cigarette between his lips. "I don't think I could ever do a desk job."
"It's not for everyone," she said, waving his comment off. "And I work too much. But I love it." She grabbed a napkin from the nearby dispenser and wiped her mouth. "Do you have any hobbies? Besides comedy, I mean."
After lighting up and taking a deep breath, he rubbed the back of his neck. "When I'm not working, I mostly take care of - of my mother,” he said gently.
A tightness entered her chest. "I'm sorry she’s not well."
"She's been sick a long time." He rested his face on his hand. "Her disability isn't enough to cover the rent and everything, so I live with her." His fingers tapped his cheek. "It's easier that way. And with my condition..."
Unsure how to continue, or even if she should, Y/N folded her hands together on the table. "You don't owe me an explanation. I didn't mean to pry."
"No, I don’t mind." He shook his head. "It’s just- I don't talk to people a lot. Outside of work."
She tapped her foot against his under the table. "You're fine," she said. He huffed and ran a hand over his hair, toothy grin spreading across his face. Her heart quickened at that. She lowered her voice, leaning closer. "May I ask you about what was on your card? Your condition?"
“What about it?” he asked softly.
“How long have you had it?”
Arthur straightened, taking a drag off his cigarette. The smoke curled around his face as he frowned at the table. “As long as I can remember.”
She bit her lip. “Is there anyway to help?”
“Changing positions. Breathing exercises. Distraction. They don’t always.” Closing his eyes, he let out a sad chuckle. “It happens at the worst times.”
“Like on the train?”
He pushed his mug away as he signed. “Like on the train.”
Y/N felt like an ass, a well-meaning jerk. She’d been too flippant the other night when she’d told him, simply, that his laughter was “fine.” Sitting here with him, it was obvious his condition caused him distress. And now her genuine attempt at getting to know him had made him uncomfortable. The light mood when he’d picked her up had been replaced with unease. She reached out to touch the back of his left hand as it rested on the table.
His eyes shot to hers; she could hear his sharp intake of breath.
“It’s all right,” she intoned. Smiling, she gave his hand a gentle squeeze. “You don’t have to be embarrassed. It doesn’t bother me.”
A sad, hiccuped laugh left his throat. His thumb caressed the web between her thumb and forefinger. “Sometimes I think I imagined you. That you can’t be real.”
Y/N snickered at that. “Haven’t my questions annoyed you enough to know I’m here?”
He stamped out his cigarette in the table’s built-in ashtray, then got up. “That isn’t the word I’d use.”
After she stood, he helped her with her coat. “What word would you use?” she asked.
The sidelong glance he gave her made her blush profusely.
“Do you have to go back to work already?” The disappointment on his face was plain to see. He pulled out his wallet and placed a few dollar bills on the table.
“No, I have some extra time. Help me walk off the pie,” she said.
He grinned, clearly happy to oblige.
~~~~~
When Y/N returned to work, she leaned back on the lobby door and giggled. Dammit. She needed to pull herself together before going back to her office. Taking the stairs to the third floor would be best.
She’d enjoyed the date (it had definitely been a date) with Arthur even more than expected. After she’d expressly told him his condition wasn’t a black mark, he’d opened up. She liked hearing him speak, wondering what else was hiding under that timidity of his. He’d even tried to crack a couple more jokes. They’d been corny, not particularly funny, and she’d groaned instead of laughed. He’d looked confused at first, but he seemed to understand she was delighted.
He’d pointed out a few of his favorite spots in the district, places she wouldn’t have ever found on her own. A comedy club here, a consignment shop there. Music had come up. Surprisingly, he’d said outright that he was a good dancer. Dancing was a mystery to her. She couldn’t even clap in time. But it helped explained the grace he sometimes displayed.
At the end, when he’d accompanied her back to her firm’s building, he’d looked at her like he wanted to kiss her. He’d either been too shy or respectful to do it, and simply nodded his goodbye. Either way, that was what sealed it for her. She didn’t repeat the mistake of letting him go without getting his address and phone number.
It had been a long time since she wanted to really know someone, to lighten their day and have their presence brighten hers. It felt a little alarming - but mostly wonderful.

On December 16th 2001 singer/songwriter Stuart Adamson took his own life.......
Stuart's parents, expats, lived in Manchester when their boy was born and moved home to Fife when he was just four, don't anyone fuckin dare tell me he wasn't Scottish!  The family settled in Crossgate on the outskirts of Dunfermline.
Adamson's father was in the fishing industry and travelled the world. He encouraged Stuart to read literature, and both parents shared an interest in folk music, Fife born author Ian Rankin attended Beath High School, two years beneath Adamson, and would later become a big fan.
Stuart founded his first band, Tattoo, in 1976 after seeing The Damned in Edinburgh, a year later he formed Skids and recruited Crosshill lad Ian Jobson, The legendary John Peel plugged them on his Radio 1 show which led them to playing support to the likes of the Clash and The Stranglers and a record deal with Virgin. Stuart walked out on the group just as they were about to make it big, for a time he rejoined the band for a tour to promote their album Scared to Dance.
Hooking up with guitarist and long-time friend Bruce Watson, Adamson formed Big Country, the line-up also featured, on keyboards, Peter Wishart, later of Gaelic rockers Runrig, and now a polititian. Originally they experimented with the synthiser sounds that were all the rage then, The Human League were riding high in the charts, but Adamson wanted something more traditional and the synth sounds made way for the guitar sound that was a unique sound for the band and that became their trademark sound. Adamson said later....“Music used to be a thing where working people got together on a Saturday night and played some songs. Someone’d play the guitar or the fiddle or an accordion. No bastard’d played the synthesiser.”
They roped in Jam drummer Rick Buckler on some demos which were hawked around a number of recording labels unsuccessfully, a support slot with Alice Cooper went disastrously too, the band’s half-baked sound grating on an audience looking for glam-metal thrills. By the second night of the tour they were sacked.
Their manager Grant Scott called in Adamson and convinced him the band needed a shake up, out went Wishart, in came in came bassist Tony Butler and drummer Mark Brzezinski, who had just finished an album with Pete Townsend of The Who. Butler, a much respected bass player had also played with Townsend, Roger Daltry and The Pretenders. The final link in the chain that brought them success was when they were signed by Phonogram records, who appointed Steve Lillywhite to produce them, Lillyywhite had just finished work on U2's breakthrough album War and had previously worked with Siouxsie And The Banshees, the Psychedelic Furs and XTC.
Initially contracted to just do a single, the sessions for Fields Of Fire produced not only that classic song, but gave birth to the Big Country sound and inspired a new bout of songwriting from Adamson, the band had it all in front of them. At the heart of it all was Adamson, the punk rocker with the virtuoso talent. He used to say, ‘Don’t call me a musician. I’m a songwriter, guitarist, singer, but muso – I don’t like that tag’,” but musician he was.
The music of their album The Crossing was epic and inspirational, as big as the glens and as loud as a cavalry charge, this was rock music yes, but not the type played by the likes of Led Zeppelin or AC/DC, this had a Scottish spin. The crowd-friendly skirling guitars, big beats and uplifting calls to arms were all great, but The Crossing also tone the sound down with the, in my own humble opinion, brilliant Chance, which Lillywhite describes as a “a beautiful, depressive song,” Released in July 1983, The Crossing went on to sell over two million copies worldwide.
Their follow up album Steeltown hit number one in the UK and hit gold status in sales, another two top ten albums followed, but all the time Stuart Adamson was fighting his demons.Although sales were good the music press started to turn on them, Steeltown was collection of songs born out of the political landscape of the 80's - the Falklands war, unemployment, tales of people trapped by circumstance and crushed by forces outside their control, it wasn’t what the press wanted to hear, the dour Scotsman. In the eyes of the music press, the band were pompous and dreary and so not cool, the dour Scotsman, in the eyes of the music press, were a pompous band and dreary and so not cool.
1985 took the pressure of Stuart a little, they were signed to score the film, The Scottish classic, Restless Natives,  the instrumental score freeing him from that "dour Scotsman" tag. The bands manager Grant tells of Stuart leaving the band, but not, relentlessly on the road, doing press, radio, TV and in the studio and not at home as much as he would have liked.He was also hitting the booze big time.Unable, at the time to get a definitive answer from Stuart on the bands future they missed out on a spot at Live Aid, having previously featured on the single Do they know it's Christmas.
Come 1988 they recorded Peace In Our Time, a more mellow Middle of the Road album, which was an attempt at cracking the US market, it bombed there and the band looked east, playing  Russia’s first international rock festival in August ’88 (Grant: “My pitch to him was: Bono – Amnesty International. It only added to the music press attitude that they had lost their way and were "self-important, pompous do-gooders."
After Russia, Stuart Adamson decided to split the band.They reformed in 91, recording No Place Like Home, it was the first of their albums that failed to reach the UK top 20. The music of the 90's didn't have a place for Big Country, the ensuing albums didn't dent the top 40, it felt like they were just going through the motions.
There was a small glimmer of hope when their single Fragile Thing looked like hitting the top 40, but some bizarre wrangle with the chart compilers about the CD singles cover having "too many folds in it"  meant it was disqualified and languished at 69, it  would have given them a springboard to punt their new album....... Stuart had by then moved to Nashville and the songs he was crafting reflected the country music scene that immerse the place. He had kicked the drink for a while  but reckoned he was happy in Nashville and could start boozing again. In October 2000 Big Country played their last gig in Kuala Lumpar, Malaysia. Adamson almost missed it when, drunk, he got on the wrong plane.The gig was a disaster. Butler later said “We were a karaoke version of what we were,” Butler told the band they should take a break for a couple of years, he didn't think it was helping Adamson's drink problem carrying on. Various people spoke  about the next two years, phone calls from concerned friends, Adamson said in one call from Steve Lillywhite that..."I’ve worked it out, I really can’t drink, I mustn’t drink, I’m happy now not drinking…’” There was talk of a collaboration, with amongst other the subject of Saturday's post, Mike Scott and other singers a sort of British Crosby Stills and Nash. On November 15, 2001, Adamson left a bar in Atlanta, Georgia. His marriage to his second wife falling apart, he was also facing a drink-driving charge that could have led to jail time. He fell off the wagon, hard. He flew back to Nashville where, instead of going home, he stayed in various hotels. Grant hired a private detective to find him – to no avail. “He drunk solidly for eight weeks in hotels,” says the manager, “and every time we found out where he was he’d just checked out for another one.” On December 4, he flew to Hawaii and checked into a hotel near Honolulu Airport where he requested the delivery of three bottles of wine to his room each day. He never left the room. On December 16, he was found by security hanging from a clothes rail. No suicide note was ever found. He was 43. Putting this post together has been difficult for me, I fight my own demons every day, and could easily fall into a life of constant boozing, I do however manage just to hold things together. Adamson's music was a big part of my formative years and I still listen to his songs regularly, some with tears in my eyes, like this one, the aforementioned Fragile Thing, the lyric tells a story much like my own and I can empathise with him through this tune......... Thank you ma'am for asking Yes I'm on my own I guess it's kind of obvious I'm eating here aloneI'm grateful for the company Tired of talking to myself Don't you look into my eyes You might see someone else
If you decide to watch/listen to the track, you might recognise a certain Scottish female singer adding her vocals to the song......
If I have made any mistakes of mispelled anything here please don't tell me know, leave it be, like Stuart Adamson and myself, it is flawed.

Adult Privilege is when the government makes housing laws discriminating against students
I'm going to walk you through my experience of trying to get house and financial support as a student and why my government has actually put laws in place that specifically discriminate against students. A bit of background first. We all know the typical student stereotype. Even where I'm from, where tuition is free, students still skate on the poverty line and some who can't work, like myself, are below it. My government likes to pretend that just because our tuition is paid and they give out a £4000 loan (most people get into like £30000 worth of debt just to live) every year that students are okay and that they have given them more than enough when this really isn't the case. The rent for my apartment is £900 a month for an unfurnished, 2 bedroom flat that has a leaky ceiling from the leaking roof, bugs that wont go away, single glazed windows, a broken security door and won't allow my cat. We were lucky to get this house, that's considered cheap. Its open plan and its tiny, and financial stress constantly eats away at me. I get no unemployment or housing support simply because I am a student. So then we got a 3rd person who could afford to pay a deposit on a new house and so the hunt was on for a 3 bedroom. A many months long hunt. Some landlords would refuse to speak to us and let us even view a house, apartment whatever because we were classed as more than 2 households. We all arent related to each other. My friend found a potential loophole in what is called the HMO law where he said he could simply say that the house we'd be renting wouldn't be his secondary residence, therefore he didn't count as a household. The government got back to us after an agency said that they wanted that in writing. Apparently you can do this ONLY if you are over 25 and not a student. Most people have graduated and earn a semi decent wage, at least national living wage here by the time they are 25. The government specifically says; The requirements for a property to be licensed as a HMO are governed by the Housing Act 2006. This Act provides (at section 125(4)) that living accommodation occupied during term time by a student is “to be treated as being that person’s only or main residence”. Any guidance on what is your main residence for tax purposes cannot change what is considered your main residence for the purposes of HMO. Accordingly, if any accommodation houses three or more unrelated students during term time, then that accommodation requires to be licensed as a HMO property. (Redacted) Constituency cannot relax any requirement set out in the legislation. What all that bullshit means is literally anyone, even people who have just gotten out of prison and are staying with a few 'buddies' can exploit that loophole but specifically students, who most likely young people, cant. So we arrive at today where my friend and I are actually getting married, I never thought my wedding day would have me marrying a man as I'm a lesbian and he is gay but I guess that means that this marriage will not lead to anything. Even then, fucking marriage. To get a house and a student loan to live off of that isn't based on my dad's income. Its so far to go just to live comfortably, its absolutely abyssmal that this is how far we actually have to go. You'd also have house listings of nice houses and flats near the university at an affordable price and then it would say: No DSS, No HMO, No students, no pets, family friendly, professionals can enquire. Some of them even required that you be over 21 or 25 to apply for a viewing which is ridiculous. And it just engrages me, full on enrages me when they say shit like that. "family friendly" yes because the nuclear family is the only kind of family people have. And when they say "family friendly" they mean immediate family, as in parents or brothers and sisters. No grandparents, no aunts and uncles unless they have custody over you and if you're over 18 they're not considered immediate family apparently because after you're 18 no one can be your legal guardian. But like... You're still not an adult though, so you don't deserve to get paid as much as a 'real' adult, making life more difficult. Its so disgusting and slimy. Everyone needs a home, a place to feel comfortable and safe and students and young people should not be expected to put up with over priced, shitty housing in loud city areas, not be allowed to have pets or eat a healthy diet or for go heating for electricity just because we're studying. We're studying to make their future better! They need to stop being so entitled and ungrateful. Ah yes we'll suffer through all your bullshit 'trials' and at the end work for you and benefitting you in the long run, because that's fucking fair isn't it. Young people, students, are the future. They are contributing to society, they will make the world a better place and benefit the entitled asses of the adults around them who fuck them over. We deserve respect, we deserve a living wage, we deserve financial support and deserve to feel comfortable and to make our own families as we choose. My friends are my family, they don't need to be blood related to me for me to call them that. They are there for me, they give me advice and help me out of binds that I am in. They care for me, they are there for me. Its a hell of a lot more than my dad has done for me in the past 9 years, but somehow he is more 'family' that my friends who bust their asses to make sure I'm okay. This has all got to stop its so fucking petty and ridiculous. Being a petty bitch is all well and good or whatever but when petty and ignorant people are in power they can actually make laws to specifically fuck people over. So many young people on the verge of homelessness and work so hard all because of dangerous stereotypes, ageist attitudes and this whole idea of the 'nuclear family'. These fucks are so backwards, their petty bullshit is literally fucking up their own future and I am simultaneously excited and terrified to see this seriously bite them in the ass. Thank you for coming to my Ted talk.

Swaziland - Dancing With Reeds
After our close encounter with the mamba we decided that traditional African dancing would be more enjoyable than hiking. Luckily for us the Reed Festival in Swaziland was taking place that weekend.
Eswatini (formerly known as Swaziland) still has a true monarchy. The people are incredibly friendly and cheerful despite a 40% unemployment rate and the highest number of HIV cases in the world have been reported.
The Reed Festival was first performed in the 1940s to ensure young unmarried women were suitable for marriage. If a girl had become pregnant outside of marriage her family owed the King a cow. The 8 day event entails tens of thousands of girls across the nation traveling to the Ludzidzini Royal Village where the girls collect and bundle reeds to deliver to their Queen Mother. The reeds are then used for repairs around the royal village. The dancing occurs on the last day which happens to be the only day open to the public.
We arrive at 11:30 for the 1pm dance and sit in the custom built stadium seating. Important people started to show up including ambassadors from China, Russia, US, Israel, and various African Nations. The king decides that 4pm suits him better so the guests wait.
The girls are broken into groups based on their ages and their tribe. The outfits are vibrant and made to accentuate their dance moves. The girls were bare breasted but confident. The only sounds you could hear were the chants and the stomping of bare feet on the grass. The number of girls is overwhelming at first but we spent hours looking at how the tribes’ outfits differed.
To end the ceremony the King and his court rush onto the field to bow in front of the lovely ladies. The girls are smitten and proud to be serving their King and Queen Mother.
After an all day event we travelled back to our beehive accommodation made out of local reeds in Milane National Park. The next morning we mountain biked throughout the park and saw zebras, crocodiles, wildebeests, kudu, warthogs, impala, but more importantly, no snakes! Back in the hot wheels— I mean— Hyundai i10 to South Africa to explore Johannesburg- a city where you only carry what you need and leave the smart phones at home.

Republican Presidents Of The 20th Century
Rep. Schiff: Only Question Is How Many In GOP Will Support Impeachment | Morning Joe | MSNBC
Theodore Roosevelt, 26th, 19011909: The “Trust Buster” is considered one of America’s greatest presidents. He was charismatic and larger than life. He was;also the youngest of all the presidents, entering office at age 42. In;contrast to later Republican presidents, Roosevelt fought hard to limit the powers of large oil and railroad companies.
William H. Taft, 27th, 19091913: Taft may be best known for supporting “Dollar Diplomacy,” the idea that US foreign policy should provide stability with the ultimate goal of promoting American commercial ventures. He was the only president who served as a justice of the Supreme Court .
Warren G. Harding, 29th, 19211923: Harding served just one day shy of three years, dying of a heart attack while in office. His presidency saw the end of World War I but was marked by scandals involving bribery, fraud, and conspiracy.
Reality Check : The Democrats Legislative Fix Will Never Happenand Doesnt Even Touch The Real Threats
Its understandable why Democrats have ascribed a life-or-death quality to S. 1, the For the People bill that would impose a wide range of requirements on state voting procedures. The dozensor hundredsof provisions enacted by Republican state legislatures and governors represent a determination to ensure that the GOP thumb will be on the scale at every step of the voting process. The proposed law would roll that back on a national level by imposing a raft of requirements on statesno excuse absentee voting, more days and hours to votebut would also include public financing of campaigns, independent redistricting commissions and compulsory release of presidential candidates tax returns.
There are all sorts of Constitutional questions posed by these ideas. But theres a more fundamental issue here: The Constitutional clause on which the Democrats are relyingArticle I, Section 4, Clause 1gives Congress significant power over Congressional elections, but none over elections for state offices or the choosing of Presidential electors.
Poll Finds Startling Difference In Vaccinations Among Us Republicans And Democrats
A Washington Post-ABC News poll has found a startling difference between Democrats and Republicans as it relates to COVID-19;vaccination.;The poll found that while 86% of Democrats have received at least one COVID-19 vaccine shot, only 45% of Republicans;have.
In addition, the survey found;that while;only;6% of Democrats said they would;probably;decline;the vaccine, 47% of Republicans;said they;would;probably not;be inoculated.;
The poll also found that;60% of unvaccinated Americans believe the U.S. is;exaggerating;the dangers of;the;COVID-19;delta variant,;while;18% of the unvaccinated say the government is accurately describing the variants risks.
However, 64% of vaccinated Americans believe the government is accurately describing the dangers of the;delta variant.
Iran fighting COVID 5th wave The variant is having a;global impact.;Irans;President;Hassan Rouhani;has warned that the country is on the brink of a fifth wave of;a COVID-19 outbreak.;The;delta variant of the virus, first;identified;in India, is;largely;responsible;for the;rising number of hospitalizations and deaths in Iran, officials say.
All;non-essential businesses have been ordered;closed;in 275 cities, including Tehran, the capital.;Travel has also been restricted between cities that are;experiencing;high infection rates.
Reports say only about 5% of Iranians have been vaccinated.;

Past Jumps In Party Affiliations
The bump in Democratic affiliation following Biden’s inauguration mirrors that of former President Barack Obama’s first term, Jones said.
“That was really the high point that we’ve seen; kind of the 2006-2009 period, when really the majority of Americans either identified as Democrats outright or were independents but they leaned toward the party,” he said.;”Our data on this only goes back to the ’90s, but it’s pretty much the only time we consistently had one party with the majority of Americans on their side.”
Republican advantages, though rarer and more short-lived, followed the Gulf War in 1991 when George H.W. Bush was in office and the 9/11 terrorist attacks during President George W. Bush’s term, according to Gallup. More people also reported GOP affiliation after the 1994, 2010 and 2014 midterm elections.
Whether the Republican Party can regain advantage during the 2022 midterm elections may rely on the successes of the Biden administration, according to Jones.
“A lot of it is going to depend on how things go over the course of the year. If things get better with the coronavirus and the economy bounces back and a lot of people expect Biden can keep relatively strong approval ratings, then that will be better for the Democrats,” Jones said.;”But if things start to get worse unemployment goes up or coronavirus gets worse; then his approval is going to go down. It’s going to make things a lot better for the Republican Party for the midterm next year.”
Democrats Think Many Republicans Sincere And Point To Policy
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Democrats, however, were somewhat more generous in their answers.;;More than four in ten Democratic voters ; felt that most Republican voters had the countrys best interests at heart . ;And many tried their best to answer from the others perspective. A 45-year-old male voter from Ohio imagined that as a Republican, he was motivated by Republicans harsh stance on immigration; standing up for the 2nd Amendment; promised tax cuts.;;A 30-year-old woman from Colorado felt that Republican votes reflected the desires to stop abortion stop gay marriage from ruining our country and give us our coal jobs back.
Other Democrats felt that their opponents were mostly motivated by the GOPs opposition to Obamacare, lower taxes and to support a party that reduced unemployment.;

Gallup: Democrats Now Outnumber Republicans By 9 Percentage Points Thanks To Independents
I think what we have to do as a party is battle the damage to the Democratic brand, Democratic National Committee Chairman Jamie Harrison said on The Daily Beasts . Gallup reported Wednesday that, at least relatively speaking, the Democratic brand is doing pretty good.
In the first quarter of 2021, 49 percent of U.S. adults identified as Democrats or independents with Democratic leanings, versus 40 percent for Republicans and GOP leaders, Gallup said. The 9-percentage-point Democratic advantage is the largest Gallup has measured since the fourth quarter of 2012. In recent years, Democratic advantages have typically been between 4 and 6 percentage points.
New Gallup polling finds that in the first quarter of 2021, an average of 49% of Americans identify with/lean toward the Democratic Party, versus 40 percent for Republicans.
Thats the largest gap since 2012:
Greg Sargent
Party identification, polled on every Gallup survey, is something that we think is important to track to give a sense to the relevant strength of the two parties at any one point in time and how party preferences are responding to events,Gallup senior editor Jeff Jones told USA Today.

Also has several smaller political parties known as third parties. Senators should not have term limits. There are more democrats than republicans in congress b. Executives of americas large public companies have long played a role in public policy by advising leaders of both parties but those corporate chieftains themselves are far more likely to be republicans than democrats, a new study shows. Most contentious issues in the united states and thats of abortion a liberal would view this as a the liberal point of view is yes we have a very unequal society theres a lot of discrimination race should be considered military and likewise you could find republicans who similarly have a mix of viewpoints. Nearly A Third Of Young Americans Say That Politics Has Gotten In The Way Of A Friendship; Differences Of Opinion On Race
Thirty-one percent of young Americans, but 37% of young Biden voters and 32% of young Trump voters say that politics has gotten in the way of a friendship before. Gender is not a strong predictor of whether or not politics has invaded personal space, but race and ethnicity are. Young whites are more likely than young Blacks to say that politics has gotten in the way–and nearly half of white Biden voters say politics has negatively impacted a friendship; 30% of white Trump voters say the same.
When young Americans were asked whether a difference of opinion on several political issues might impact a friendship, 44% of all young Americans said that they could not be friends with someone who disagreed with them on race relations. Sixty percent of Biden voters agreed with this sentiment, as did a majority of women and Blacks . Americans between 18 and 24 were more likely than those slightly older to feel that race relations would cause a problem with friendships. Differences of opinion on whether or not to support Trump was an issue for slightly more than a third , followed by immigration , police reform , abortion , climate change , and guns .
Democrats Return The Favor: Republicans Uninformed Or Self
The 429 Democratic voters in our sample returned the favor and raised many of the same themes. Democrats inferred that Republicans must be VERY ill-informed, or that Fox news told me to vote for Republicans.;;Or that Republicans are uneducated and misguided people guided by what the media is feeding them.
Many also attributed votes to individual self-interest whereas GOP voters feel Democrats want free stuff, many Democrats believe Republicans think that I got mine and dont want the libs to take it away, or that some day I will be rich and then I can get the benefits that rich people get now.
Many used the question to express their anger and outrage at the other side.;;Rather than really try to take the position of their opponents, they said things like, I like a dictatorial system of Government, Im a racist, I hate non-whites.;

Taking The Perspective Of Others Proved To Be Really Hard
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The divide in the United States is wide, and one indication of that is how difficult our question proved for many thoughtful citizens. A 77-year-old Republican woman from Pennsylvania was typical of the voters who struggled with this question, telling us, This is really hard for me to even try to think like a devilcrat!, I am sorry but I in all honesty cannot answer this question. I cannot even wrap my mind around any reason they would be good for this country.
Similarly, a 53-year-old Republican from Virginia said, I honestly cannot even pretend to be a Democrat and try to come up with anything positive at all, but, I guess they would vote Democrat because they are illegal immigrants and they are promised many benefits to voting for that party. Also, just to follow what others are doing. And third would be just because they hate Trump so much. The picture she paints of the typical Democratic voter being an immigrant, who goes along with their party or simply hates Trump will seem like a strange caricature to most Democratic voters. But her answer seems to lack the animus of many.;;
Democrats struggled just as much as Republicans. A 33-year-old woman from California told said, i really am going to have a hard time doing this but then offered that Republicans are morally right as in values, going to protect us from terrorest and immigrants, going to create jobs.
