dw christmas special no. i lost track: joy to the world

I went into this with low expectations because I generally don't really like 1) Christmas specials, 2) Moffat, 3) Moffat Christmas specials. Because of these things I also wasn't really paying attention to promo and was pretty much unspoiled for everything besides "time hotel" and "Nicola Coughlan".

Anyway possibly for that reason, this exceeded my (low) expectations and I mostly had fun, lol. Cynicism pays off

I think this had a lot of the basic problems I have with most Christmas specials, and it speedran through a lot of the cliches that mark them, but... tbh whatever I guess, I mean, there were some enjoyable bits and at this point it's a Christmas special, right, you know what you're getting.

Time Hotel was a very cool idea and was executed pretty well. Put Disney's money to work

Fifteen abruptly having to spend a year waiting was not an angle I anticipated at all, though perhaps I should've. I think at this point "omg I've NEVER done this EVER before" is just so comically untrue it's an inherent eye roll BUT I'm also at a point with this show where I'm like... it's been over 60 years... of course they've done everything. I'll look the other way. It's fine. The Doctor in mundane scenarios is fun when he's not being an asshole about it and Anita and the Doctor were fun to watch. I also appreciated that they addressed the obvious elephant of "call Ruby ffs" lmao. (Or call the other guy who literally has a TARDIS ... but again, I'll give it to 'em.)

Fifteen's angst about being alone doesn't hit quite right because Ruby didn't leave him, he left Ruby behind. I think you can argue he left Ruby behind because he was trying to get ahead of it -- you can't break up with me I'm breaking up with you! -- but, well, in this era of Doctor Who character stuff comes at you fast and you either roll with it or are miserable I guess. Ncuti is very good and that helps a lot

The general plot of "they want to sell a star so they are using a time hotel and will sacrifice Earth to do it" like. Sure. That's fine lmao whatever it's a DW plot it's serviceable

Joy herself was kind of a letdown ... I def felt more of a connection to Anita than to Joy, unfortunately, and as the Anita montage was wrapping I thought why wasn't the whole ep about this... But I did like the mom-died-alone-during-covid reveal and particularly the jab at the tories. I thought that hit. Fuck em.

It's not a Moffat episode without some generalization about human nature that makes absolutely no sense to me and the "hotel rooms reveal who you are as a person" was way up there lmao. Hotel rooms reveal how much disposable income I have at the time of booking actually.

Moffat's humour is hit or miss with me but it was more hit than miss here, I think. The mansplain bits for example made my eyes roll back into my skull but I liked the plunger joke, the TARDIS toys from the internet, I even thought Joy's boner joke was funny lmao

The ending w the star and Bethlehem and stuff ... pretty naff imo but hey it's a Christmas special. I liked the fakeout of Ruby getting a call and it being from her mom too ... I know they'll reunite next season so I don't mind the tease here.

the reason why you wrote jason into string on til morning is so real. i admit i did actually reimagine the pancake scene to be cass instead when i read it and hearing you say this is so vindicating.

that aside, can i just say how much i Loved straight on til morning? i don't think i actually left a comment but i want you to know that this is the first ever fic where i've actually enjoyed the use of chat. as in i usually hate it so much that seeing chat sometimes makes me stop reading but you did it so well, and i loved the conversations between yj (and the fact that they also had a group with anita greta and cissie!!! they don't have to still be heroes to be friends!!! though i'll forever stand by anita should have been able to keep being a hero this obviously wasn't about her, and mainly i just wanted to say that it's so lovely that you kept the connection between all of them). i loved how you wrote each of them texting and also how it feels like kon has this little bubble of warmth coming from his phone even alone in his sad apartment.

anyway that was way too long but the whole fic was so good. clark and kon!!! and kon's reasons for going for journalism... his sense of obligation to the kents and to tana. it's so sad and so good and i love how hopeful everything is and that you gave him so much breathing room to work things out. this is very rambly but i only realized when i saw your post that you were in tumblr and that i hadn't commented and i just wanted to say how amazing your fic was

and thank you so much!!! honestly i think chats/texts are a form of epistolary and i looove a well-done epistolary work - one of these days i want to tackle a longer full epistolary piece with like, in-universe news articles and stuff. they're a narrative tool like any other, and while i def concur that chatfics are often ooc and cracky i don't think the chat/text medium is inherently worse! it just depends how it's used. i personally love to think about how different characters would text (cassie, a bay area girlies, uses a lot of LOL and OMG and txt-lingo and abbreviations. bart's responses over text are Always the same timestamp as the message before, never even one minute later. things like that) and how you can sorta come up with different tones just via texting! it's enrichment to me. so thank you!! glad to hear it works :D

AND YEAH i really sat there for a while going hmm. i don't actually know what kon would go into careerwise! and then it hit me that if i don't know, kon definitely doesn't have to know either. he's such a fun character to explore the sense of duty with because the most surface-level reading of him looks like he's just a hedonist and a silly little guy, but then you get to things like how deeply he blames himself for the death of that one superboy impersonator or the camera crew that cyborg superman killed in front of him, etc., and it's just so... ough!!!! and his issues with tana's death in particular just. yeah that would i think tip him over the edge into thinking he Has to follow in superman's footsteps and be a journalist. he has to be Like Superman. he owes it to tana. (he does not have to do any of this but he needs a minute 😭.)

INTERNSHIP WEEKLY JOURNAL

WEEK 1

This week is my 1st week working at the Convention Service and all I can say is that I am learning a lot and being happy because they are always guiding me in every way they can teach me. I am anxious and scared at first but I am getting excited to work because of my colleagues. I spoke to my Supervisor in the Banquets department, Mr. Zimmer, Convention Service is under Banquets about my rotation on my December so I can prepare myself again for adjusting and adapting. I will be transferred around December 23rd. My last day of the week was very tiring but I had to stand my ground. I was left to work alone with my night shift supervisor Mr. Rob Givens, we worked separate rooms and he had to finish a room on the 14th floor named Wilson’s Plover and I had to finish the Ballroom called Audubon D,E,F for a convention event. We finished working around 3am in the morning, luckily I had to come in at 2pm the next day. I realized as I end my week I garnered 43 hours in just 5 days of work. My work in the Convention Service department will be totally different from the thought processes of my last internship in the Philippines in Crowne Plaza because this is more of a behind the scenes department, with less guest interaction.

WEEK 2

This week is my 2nd week working at the Convention Service and the only way for me is up claw my way and learn. I can say is that I am still learning a lot and happy and excited about my progress since they told me I easily adapt and a fast learner, well the reason is they are showing me the ropes. I just have to pick up my pace. I spoke to the HR Department regarding my housing if they could still extend my stay in the hotel until the 8th of November because I am waiting for my father to send my down payment and first month for the housing that I am trying to get. This week was more of learning for me than action because all we had to do is refresh all the rooms, for the reason that we were still having the same people from last week's Raymond James Investment Solution Forum. But on the last day of the week was filled with action because we had a wedding for Mr. and Mrs. Jasper , I had to set up the Foyer and Promenade alone. It was challenging since I had to do it all on my own but I felt respect, responsibility and trust. My work in the Convention Service is more of Set up, Refresh, or Clean and Clear. That's basically the structure of the cycle that I am learning so far.

WEEK 3

This week is my 3rd week working at the Convention Service and I have to say I am happy about my progress since I am getting more familiar with the techniques and rooms ,then I just have to pick up my pace .As I am approaching the week of moving into another I had to prepare myself from commuting and being more independent than just living in a hotel. This week was more busy than last week because we had to turn a meeting room to a wedding venue at 7pm on the first day of the week. But as the day went on I was busy but manageable. We only had to set a few rooms into a conference room and theatre for meetings and talks respectively. My work in the Convention Service has added another function in the cycle Set up, Refresh, Turn or Clean and Clear. Turn means you’re turning a room in the middle of a break to another type of set up or add more tables or chairs in it. Depending on the request of a guest.

WEEK 4

This week is my 4th week working at the Convention Service and I can’t believe that I am enjoying my work even if I am a people's person, since we are more behind the scene with more actions like setting up and breaking down rooms. Commuting is very troublesome if I take a bus going to work because there are no bus stops going to the property so as much as I take Uber or Lyft rides, sometimes my roommate Roy gives me a ride going to work whenever he is free. This week was not as busy as the other week because we only had a few functions, We had two new groups Bay Care Medicine Group and the Tech Data Corp, We had to set up White Ibis and Herring gull into a U-Shape Conference room with the usual pads, pens, candies and waffles. My highlight for this week was I had to turn a room named Cormorant from a theatre setup to a school room set up. My Manager Mr. Zimmer gave me the task alone to scale my abilities that I have learned so far. For the rest of the week it was more refreshing of the rooms and cleaning up. than turning them because they stayed in the hotel for almost more than a week.

WEEK 5

This week is my 5th week of working in the Conventional service. I have to say it has been hard but all we have to do is grind hard. Entering this week with that mentality was kind of disappointing because we were not busy until the 21st. We did not have much work from the17th until the 19th, the 20th we had to set up for the big day tomorrow. They were to hold a two day owners meeting in the Roseate Spoonbill room. We had to assemble new office chairs and put up a U-Shape setup with the new office chairs that we just assembled. This was a very big deal for me because if we get something wrong in the setup our manager Mr. Zimmer Hair will be in the meeting he will be able to notice it.

WEEK 6

This is my 6th week working experience under Conventional Services. This week was swamped because a College football team is coming over to stay in the hotel for 5 days. We had to set up all the meeting rooms into a sports facility on the second floor, while the Audubon Ballroom became a breakfast and lunch buffet. We had to build small massage beds for the players where they can do their stretches and massages. On the 26th we had another client in Herring gull so we had to turn the meeting room from a theatre setup to a U-Shape style set up. Then after the meeting finished we had to turn it again into a theatre style room. I was told that I was going to be moved to the morning shift so I was scared because I am not a morning person. November 26th at night I checked out a car and bought it. It was the best investment I ever put money into.

WEEK 7

This is my 7th week working under Conventional Services, a new month and a new schedule for me, they moved me to the morning shift usually 5am-2pm or 7am-4pm. It is a different setup in the morning, because at night shift you focus on setting up the meeting rooms, however in the morning shift it is more on guest assistance and refreshing the rooms. In the morning shift I noticed that they speak English which is good, I was getting a hang of the Spanish already but English is okay too. This week as well I have been introduced to the Banquets team because I will be working under them soon. I think that working in the mornings was more relaxed, because we only set up water stations and refresh rooms.

WEEK 8

This is my 8th week of working under Conventional service, working in the mornings is fun because we actually interact with more guests. This week we had two groups who came in, the Teachers Association of Tampa we had Audubon A for them, while we had the other group on the second floor for a Lunch meeting.

WEEK 9 

I have not been to work this week because they gave me a time off from my job.

WEEK 10

This is my 10th and last week of working under Conventional service, for my last week I tried to give my best, we had an outdoor wedding in the Casitas, and a reception on the 14th floor.

WEEK 11

This is my 1st week working under Banquet Services, on my first week it is more on training on the basics. My first task was to shadow the Buffet runner, for the whole week I was assisting the buffet runner understanding what I have to do. Sometimes I also assist the servers to get to know my other colleagues.

WEEK 12

This is my 2nd week working under Banquet Services, on my second week. I became a buffet runner for a meeting in Audubon A for a lunch meeting from 11-2:30pm.

WEEK 13

This is my 3rd week working under Banquet Services, I have started to work as a banquet server, I am having recollection of my first internship in the 7 Corners restaurant. I am learning from Miss Anita with all the Standard operating procedures.

WEEK 14

This is my 4th week working under Banquet Services, I have started to work as a banquet server, I am having recollection of my first internship in the 7 Corners restaurant. I am learning from Miss Anita with all the Standard operating procedures.

WEEK 15

This is my 4th week working under Banquet Services, I have started to work as a banquet server, I am working on the 14th floor in Armani’s restaurant. For a week we have been serving 120 people for breakfast and lunch.

WEEK 16

This is my 5th week working under Banquet Services, we have a Super Bowl Party in the whole Audubon. So we had to set up a carving station and a buffet line per request from our clients. The following day we had a group in the casitas, they did lunch in the restaurants and for dinner they headed to Casitas for an outdoor party. We had set up a bar and a lot of cocktail tables.

WEEK 17

This is my 6th week working under Banquet Services, I have started to work as a banquet server. I am working on the 14th floor in Armani’s restaurant, with the morning crew. We usually have breakfast buffets in the restaurant. After that lunch meetings are usually in Audubon A or Outside the patio, so that the guest will enjoy the sun. February 6-9 we had two big groups coming in Audubon A, it was a group of scientists and innovators. The other group was in Audubon DEF.

WEEK 18

This is my 7th week working under Banquet Services, we have The Kansas City Chiefs staying over the hotel, once again we became busy because breakfast, lunch and dinner will be buffets. Adding to this we have a wedding at the 14th floor on the 6th of February so we were also tasked to set up a cocktail party. We serve nutritious food for the athletes, unlike the usual breakfast buffet. I noticed they love oatmeal with honey and fruits, they love biscuits and gravy which was kind of weird though that is why I am here for learning their culture.

WEEK 19

This is my 8th and last week working under Banquet Services, We big group coming called PACIRA bioscience. They held a team building event and awards night in the hotel premises. It was a very fun group because they are very accommodating, we had to set breakfast and lunch at the tent because they were a large group, for dinner they wanted it in the outdoors so we had it in the casitas. They were there for the whole week, the awards night was held in the Audubon which was pretty grand. We had an Indian wedding in the Audubon, it was a plated dinner of 300 pax. gathering in the said event. It was super fun and accommodating, they really love to dance. Sadly it is my last week working with them. I had a blast with the group because I love serving, and the environment.

WEEK 20

This is my 1st week working under 1823 Kitchen & Bar, I started as a buffet runner. I was in charge on every detail of the buffet, I had to prepare the lamps, heaters, labels, utensils and the most important food. I have to make sure that the buffet is always presentable. 

WEEK 21

This is my 2nd week working under 1823 Kitchen & Bar, I started as a busboy. I was in charge on every detail of the table. Resetting the table, busing the plates and glasses, cleaning the tables and I also help the main servers with their tasks so I will learn more about the restaurant.

GOD… WHAT A DUMBASS CHILD I WAS…….. I LOVE YOU LENALEE LEEreally tho, i do like her a lot. and i hate that i now feel the need to justify that because like… she’s great! i love lena! but she has so many haters, and then she even has haters because people like me love her, even though we love her as loudly as possible because everyone hates her (most of the time) for no good reasonlook, okay, if people can love kanda and lavi, two gigantic, raging assholes, then they have no good fucking reason to dislike lenalee unless they’re just sexist, because they’re no better than she is. or allen, for that matter, because a lot of the excuses for hating lena is 1. she cries a lot, which, so does allen, and 2. she’s a damsel in distress, and… god, anyone who said that just didn’t fucking pay attention, like literally allen and lena had the same dam chara arc during the ark arc, the only difference is that they were at slightly different times, so allen’s started before the ark arc and lena’s started during. basically, that they both used up all their strength and fucked up their innocences fighting an enemy stronger than them, and were out of commission until the order found a way to help them get their powers back and stronger, and because they had another powerful enemy causing the need for them to get their powers back. both of them struggled so much without their powers and ended up hurting themselves without them, and that was only because they were so desperate to get their innocences back that they didn’t care about any damage they did to themselvespeople who hate lenalee because she’s a “crybaby” or a “damsel” are misogynistic cowards. it’s just the facts

there are, like, actual legitimate reasons to dislike lenalee (though actually, the only one i’ve personally come up with is the fact that she doesn’t want to save the world, onlt her friends, which. uh. same goes for lavi and kanda and allen, so) but people don’t usually go after any of the good reasons, now, do they? they just go for the bullshit because they can’t accept that lena is one of the smartest, strongest charas in the series, smarter than the others of the main four and strong enough that she was able to fuck up the first level four they ran into without being at general level, as well as destroy level fours after that, and her innocence was notable enough that for a solid while there everyone thought she was the heart and fuck! she still might be!

anyways, my point is, for all her flaws and mistakes, i love lenalee lee

alright i’ve answered too many of these at this point… i think i have to admit it to myself… i have no story ideas whatsoever. in a general sense (heh) i’ve always wanted to write some cross/lena, but… sometimes i feel so bad abt that ship bc she seems so gay…. we don’t have much of a good lady to ship her with… why are there not more girls in d.gray…i mean i know why. we all know the fuck why.

other story ideas… i don’t have many, but i’d like to write lenalee in a modern au school setting, because like… every time i see someone write her in a modern school setting, they always make her like. a med student, or a psych major, or an art or drama fucker, and like? lenalee lee? the big fucking nerd? i want her to be some STEM fucker. or a historian. or fuck, like, a football coach. let her show off and piss off some old men in the process, please

um. dunno. i like her friendships with miranda and jeryy a lot. her relationship with anita? miss that. i like… lena having friends. like. friends who understand her as a girl. like she’s friends with all of the guys and she loves the science division dudes and her brother, but i like her being able to have friendships that would equal an opportunity to have like. a sleepover w/ her girls. it’s good times.

also, because i’m fucked up, i guess, i enjoy her relationship with malcolm. it’s relatable. i want her to kick his ass someday. i guess in that sense i just enjoy what their relationship could become, that is, lenalee dancing on his grave in her innocence heels

Belle: my fave is def the scene where she’s taking care of the Beast after the wolves attack them and he gets all grumpy and she Shuts That Shit Down. i take so much of my inspo for belle from that scene alone tbh--but i also do love the opening sequence and how could you not love I WANT ADVENTURE IN THE GREAT WIDE SOMEWHEREEEE

Simba: ugh, so many good moments, but the best scenes in the whole movie are def the stars scene with mufasa and when simba sees rafiki. i also LOVE LOVE nala and simba’s reunion. also, ofc, okay this part is def my fave: the running back to pride rock UGH THAT SCENE

Toulouse: FFT FFT FFT!! that was legit the only part of the movie i remembered from watching it as a little kid. also when he and ber are fighting on the piano, i love that scene, it’s so cute.

Sweet: everything?? about him??? he’s so great?? all his lines?? but i love the part where he’s taking care of the old king the best bc before that moment he’s kind of been liek quippy and comic relief but u get to really see his compassion and strength and steadiness in that scene and i love it.

Maui: his backstory, definitely. that was what made me really interested in playing him bc he totally models slyth but is actually a big ole puff and just wants people to love him. also i like the scene where he leaves moana after she Fucks Up (tm) i know that’s probably a weird scene to love but idk i thought it was super interesting.

Hercules: alskdjfladjkflaskjdfljfl EVERYTHING ABOUT HIM?? herc is just my precious darling. but i love how awkward he is but then how FIERCE he gets when he’s protecting people. like you think what a soft marshmellow how is he a hero and then when faced with danger he RISES and it just always warms my heart. my fave is the hydra scene bc that’s the first time he’s like rly sUCCESSFUL as a hero and it’s such a good fight and he uses his strength to his ADVANTAGE ugh i lvoe hercules.

Attina: ahaha she also doesn’t have a lot of canon, but def my favorite is when they find out that ariel has been #gettindown at the club and attina is like NO ABSOLUTELY NOT and hten everyone makes puppy faces at her and she caves so easily. i based a lot of her character on that. like she seems like a hardass but she’s rly not she wants her sisters to be HAPPY

Akela: gosh, he really does not have a lot of canon to go off of at all, in either movie. i’m gonna say the Law of the Jungle. That’s really important to his development in my head. also the scene in the live-action with grey where he tells him that the runts get eaten sometimes bc it’s like the only time he’s not the Serious Alpha but to me it just showed this like softer side to him? that was playful--and i based a lot of his character on that.

♥: One thing you love about your Muse.

Belle: laksdjflkajdf what don’t i love about belle? i mean as a character as a whole i love how inspiring she was to all young girls who loved to read and encouraging girls to be SMART and not be SHY about it. to EMBRACE their bRAINS which is such an important lesson for young girls. and i really love that about my belle too. that she is very demure about a lot of things but DO NOT QUESTION HER INTELLIGENCE. it is the one thing she will unflinchingly defend about herself and i don’t think we see that enough in female characters.

Simba: i love how much simba loves himself. i make fun of it quite a bit, bc he can be so over the top with it, but i really appreciate his level of self-care because that’s something i struggle with. like--not so much confidence, i have a decent amount of that but just, he really does take care of his overall physical health. he exercises, he showers, he eats properly (tho i mean he eats a lot too and lets himself indulge which is important). but he like idk keeps his beard trimmed and takes care of his skin and this sounds like a really weird thing to admire but since i struggle w depression, it’s nice to see ppl who function normally even tho he also struggles w depression. ALSO i love his flirting. haha. inspires me to be a better flirt.

Toulouse: kind of self care too, in a way? i love that lou is unapologetic about who he is, even when he doesn’t like himself. and he really does take care of himself before anyone else. like he does not let other’s opinions (except his siblings) influence his decisions and that’s something i struggle with. it actually makes lou one of my most genuine characters, because if he is sweet to you, if he helps you, if he protects you, he’s doing it because he wants to, not out of any obligation. as someone who struggles to say “no” to people, it’s admirable.

Bambi: ahaha honestly there isn’t much i admire about bambi. not because he’s a bad person but because he’s a teen who is still finding himself and struggling with a lot of self loathing and is in that place in his life where he is making mistakes. but, i do like that, writing him, im getting a--chance to look back and rexamine teenhood from a new perspective which is interesting and fun.

Perdita: i love how FIERCE she is. i always say perdita’s attitude is mine if i didn’t care about what people thought of me and that’s definitely true. i love that the first impression that paul got from her was she didn’t care what anyone thinks BUT i love that she really actually does too bc it just adds so much dynamic.

Sweet: gosh i love how level-headed he is. as someone who is temperamental i really appreciate characters like sweet and poca and haku who are very centered and strong and sturdy. i appreciate their calm presence in my head. i also LVOE how poetic writing him is. he’s one of my characters i feel like i can indulge lyrically in my words with the most.

Maui: i love how conflicted maui is. i love that he has this really stark duality to him and is much more than his cocky exterior and he genuinely really does care about people, not just about the attention, though that is a big draw. i also love what a BOY he is. it’s really fun to play him walking that line of fuckboi and genuine person.

Hercules: what a PRECIOUS MUFFIN HE IS. i just love the whole super strength but has no way to control it thing. it’s just a great duality to play with. like he is so gentle and so afraid of hurting people but has this awesome power. he’s just very precious to me just so sweet and good and pure. 

Attina: my self indulgent bae ahaha. i love that she’s a MERMAID i love that she’s so bubbly. i don’t have any BUBBLY characters. and she’s so happy and smiley. i mean, simba is kinda like that both of them just Radiate Joy. and i also love playing sisters. i love love the family dynamic and the fact that there is so many of them, because it just leads to such RICH character development. i love what a romantic she is. i love how soft and kind but how protective. how scared but how brave. ugh my beeb

Akela: he’s another really calm person. i love that akela doesn’t linger on his mistakes. he has regrets. he acknowledges when he’s done something wrong and then--wait for it--HE MOVES ON. he doesn’t dwell. he doesn’t beat himself up. he picks himself up and dust himself off and moves on. which is so refreshing bc most of my characters are wallowers ahhaa

Belle: well her voice comes so easily to me i love it except it’s SO thinky. she is always who i write the longest posts on bc she just examines everything but i love it bc i so do not think like that but it opens my mind to interesting thought processes i haven’t explored myself before. though i also edit her the most bc her dialogue is SO HARD. it’s getting better tho as she gets more confident but it only takes one set back to go back to stuttering and holding her tongue.

Simba: gosh. i love his voice. it’s so COLORFUL. i can write simba all day because even in his darkest moments he is so BRIGHT and he feels everything so deeply. i love his background. i love writing about africa and islam and how he is bisexual and his race (but in the little things like how he has sensitive skin and likes movies like Hairspray lol). he’s really so different from me in so many ways, but he’s also an accumulation of like all the men in my life i’ve admired so he has a v special place in my heart.

Toulouse: gosh i love toulouse. idk his voice comes SO naturally to me. he is, without a doubt, the character i just instinctually know the best. i can’t even explain it but he just popped into my head completely formed. i knew everything about him almost immediately and even the things that came later just fell into place so easily. i just love him because he is so complicated and dynamic and feels so deeply while also having a really complicated relationship with those emotions. writing him is both frustrating bc he always makes the same mistakes, but very easy for me.

Bambi: ugh i love bam. he’s another one that i just loved from the start. i wanted him for so so long before i actually got him and he just mad sense to me. i love his shyness. i like writing his view of the world since he def has so much influence from books and movies and he thinks in like tropes a lot and i’ve never written like that before and it’s super fun.

Perdita: i love how concise she is. i love all the sharp language i get to use with her. how every sentence i feel like i hit the period mark really fiercely. every sentence is important and to the point. she doesn’t like meander and as someone with flowy writing it’s nice to be able to know that i can do shorter stuff.

Sweet: UGH i love the poetry to his voice. making him a poet was a great move on my part bc i just looooove it. i love his voice. how calm. how gentle. how wise. and beautiful tbh. also all his experience is really fun to write. he’s like a fully formed person.

 Maui: i think i mentioned this but what a BOY he is. i love it. i love being able to play with the line between saying shitty sexist things but not knowing they’re shitty and sexist and really being a (mostly) genuine person but not always kosher or PC or anything like that.

Hercules: im still getting used to his voice but i really like how much he curses lmao he is like FUCK FUCK FUCK in his head at all times and i love that bc he’s so soft and smol and it’s such a funny contrast. also i get to play with humor and irony a lot with him and that’s fun. hopefully i can do more allusions to mythology once i start working with his powers more and that’ll be fun

Attina: i love her OCD. i think it makes for really interesting writing because people with OCD repeat phrases and stuff a lot and always having to be hyperaware of her actions like--remembering she doesn’t like to touch people and remembering that she locks the door nine times and that she doesn’t eat food from public places. it just really plants me in her head every time i write her.

Akela: his connection to nature. tbh being able to play as a wolf im ngl. but also a LEADER that people RESPECT AND LISTen TO. also i love how his voice is sad but not depressingly so. so it makes it really interesting to write like balancing all that emotional with his cool, level-headness.

Craig commands the track ably, and you can tell why he was such a solid foundation stone for Bad Boy.

A Tribe Called Quest : The Pressure

Great tune from "Beats, Rhymes, and Life". I don't remember Tribe ever doing a DJ track but the section of this before Q-Tip comes in might be the closest - lots of cuts and scratches, much of which came from their own records! Phife goes off on the second verse, continuing the rampage that kicked off back on "The Low End Theory".

I don't know how I've managed not to play you this one already! From the very nicely-priced "Mouse Outfit Remixed" collection, this is a shoulder-mover where Sparkz kicks Manchester rhymes over TBG's trademark boom-blap. 

Phonte : Such Is Life

One of the best MCs in the artform, and one who has let us into his life from the beginning of his career. The "No News Is Good News" album comes seven years after Phonte's last solo release, and it's a powerful, concentrated album which is packed with real life experiences that we will all face. This particular track, produced by DJ Cozmos, is a standout on my strong purchase recommendation for the month!

Simtraks ft. Camp Lo : Eternity Window

In a more reflective mode than many will know them for, Camp Lo take the mics for a deep cut in all senses of the phrase. This was a standout on the "Sputnik Sweetheart" album by Houston's Simtraks, and the samples of the astronomer Carl Sagan add to the cosmic vibe of the track. Not a well-known track, but an excellent one - if I could change just one thing though, it'd be that snare...

Guilty Simpson ft. Meyhem Lauren and Starving B : CO-OP

I'm not familiar with Cuns and Sine One, but they did a top job on the production here. Great new single from Detroit's Guilty Simpson alongside two Queens MCs, conjouring up images of the New Day Co-Op in "The Wire".

Tanya Morgan : Just Not True

AKA the Trump theme tune...a pick from the 2009 "Brooklynati" album that I hadn't heard in a while. Brick Beats on production, allowing the group to use all their energy on the mic.

PRhyme : Rock It

The second PRhyme album came out this month and I think it may well have surpassed the original! This single gave us the first peep at what to expect, and it's just a great beat, classic Premo cuts, and killer rhymes - not all of which you'll catch at first. Definitely some rewind lines on this one, and take some time to appreciate how DJ Premier breaks down the main hook/bridge phrase on the turntables - masterful.

J-Zone : The Art of Shit Talkin' (Instrumental)

I somehow don't have the vocal version of this (yet) but it's the expected excellent level of production from J-Zone - you can get this beat as part of his instrumentals collection on Bandcamp. Peep the technique.

G-Dep ft. Ghostface Killah, Keith Murray, and Craig Mack : Special Delivery (Remix)

A sparse, uptempo number from the Bad Boy camp, and a solid single for the currently-incarcerated G-Dep back in 2001. Every MC drops quotables, from the always-fire Ghostface through to the surprise appearance of Craig Mack, who'd last released a record four years previously and stepped back from the industry. In a kind of tribute to the incredible "Flava In Ya Ear (Remix)" video, this one was also shot in B&W but with a pace to match the EZ Elpee-produced beat. This MC lineup was just the thing needed to elevate the original track from "Child Of The Ghetto".

Camp Lo : Retro

Back to that slang-dense Lo flavour! One of the best tracks from their latest album ("The Get Down Brothers"), they channel some old-school flavour but keep a modern feel at the same time. I bought the digital release of this LP, so I'm still trying to find out who produced this cut!

Eazy-E : Eazy-er Said Than Dunn

It's been twenty-three years since the NWA founder's death, and he's too often forgotten. For this selection, we go back to his 1988 "Eazy-Duz-It" solo album for the only track clean enough for radio play - and intentionally written as such. Dr.Dre and Yella produced it, and Dre is also credited as the writer - which is interesting, as in later years he would be known as someone who would employ writers for his own lyrics! This song was tributed eleven years after its release by fellow Compton native DJ Quik on his "Quikker Said Than Dunn".

Black Moon : Who Got The Props?

The first time I heard this on the pirate station Supreme back in Leeds in the early 90s, they didn't announce the artist or the track title, which was frustrating - because I thought that this was one of the best records I had ever heard! Eventually I found out what it was and emptied my pockets to buy the import 12" single. A straight classic of Brooklyn rhymes over a jazz sample and some kicking drums, which gave us a preview of the quality to expect from the "Enta Da Stage" album.

[Hangmen 3] Benzino : Bang Ta Dis

Back in the days of the SOHH message boards, this beat was a popular one when it came out! Benzino's not the most heavyweight lyricist in the world, so searching out the vocal of this isn't a must necessarily, but he along with Johnny Bananas and Jeff Two Times kill it on the production here.

The Doobie Brothers :  You Belong To Me

My assumption is that this is supposed to be a love song. However, it can't be just me that think it sounds a little...pimpish? This song was written in the late 70s by the Doobies' Michael McDonald and Carly Simon, who herself recorded a more popular version than this, one which got a Grammy nomination. Anita Baker, J-Lo, and others have recorded it as well, but this, the first recorded version (from "Livin' On The Fault Line") is my personal favourite. McDonald is one of the most unmistakable voices in music, and he does a top-notch job with this song.

Marvin Gaye : After The Dance (Instrumental)

An early track from Marvin Gaye's 1976 "I Want You" album, some of you will know this as the ending credit music on "American Pimp". While the vocal version is clearly a love ballad, the Gaye and Leon Ware-produced instrumental seems to take on a sadder character without Marvin's voice over the top. I love it.

If you have Spotify in your country it's a great way to explore, but otherwise there's always Youtube and the like. Seeing your favourite artists live is the best way to put money in their pockets, and buy the vinyl/CDs/downloads of the stuff you like the most!

Mel- sleeps with just one. 

Ber- MANY super many he is incapable of getting hot in the night unless he’s sick. Though tbh Im sure he and Simba have compromised and he has like a seperate blanket for just him or Ber just curls up super close to Simba to suck in all his body temp

Kiara- gets hot at night, so just one sheet 

Hades- One sheet too, gets all tangled up with tossing and turning

Milo- He’s the type of guy to always kick the sheet all the way down to the end of the bed so really he should just go without

Nala- Sheet/comforter very standard

Kiki- she likes blankets. She has a quilt passed down from generation to generation that she has to sleep with in addition to everything else. 

Anita- also a blanket lover. She probably has a snuggie tbh bc she reads before bed and she gets cold otherwise. Gonna say 2-3 blankets (also def has like a bunch of pillows on her bed too)

Prince- one sheet or no sheet lives in a forest

Paul- Eh, one sheet kinda dude. 

Andrina- one sheet, also kicks it all the way down to the bottom of the bed. Bed always a wreck. Sometimes bunches comforter up as pillow instead of using pillow. 

Merida- Blanket lover. She also has a special blanket her mother and she sewed together as per custom. Despite being at odds with Elinor, she still uses  it. 

Mowgli- Very used to warm weather so he’s gonna be a baby when it gets cold (though he’ll love the snow). Soooo though he’s used to rather thin sheets, maybe one or two, he’ll probably need like five blankets and he’ll sleep underneath all of them all curled up like a bear cub

🎀- Does your muse like to accessorize? What are their favorite pieces of accessories?

Mel- she actually does but it’s usually one statement piece, like a beautiful stunning pendant or gorgeous statement earrings, never both. She loves to experiment with make up too, so she’ll wear bright neon eyeshadow or dark edgy lipstick all the time. 

Ber- not often. creature of habit, his accessories r the same. He has some leather wrap around bands on his wrist. 

Kiara- ALL THE TIME she’ll go overboard too. Loves jewelry, loves pins on her jackets and shirts, loves putting flowers or clips in her hair. Is extra, knows it, embraces it. 

Hades- yesss he loooves his rings and his necklaces. Type of boy to wear several long gold necklaces at once. Always has several rings on when he goes to those fancy schmancy events. On the day to day he will do like one or two though.

Milo- lol no do his glasses count. Has a watch?

Nala- Yes! Like Mel, she usually just does a statement piece though she buys sets of necklaces/earrings that go together and wears them appropriately. She loves jangly jewelry and cant wear it as much as she wants bc its not ‘appropriate.’ 

Kiki- Yes! She also likes wacky pieces like Mel, and usually wears several long necklaces or long earrings. Not your typical pieces that you’ll find. 

Anita- She isn’t a big accessory kind of gal. She likes simple charms if anything, small dainty pieces of jewelry. She has sold most of her favourite pieces because she is poor now. 

Prince- lol look he’s just getting the hang of shoes

Paul- He has one necklace he wears literally almost every day, often tucked under his shirts so its not entirely noticeable. It was his deceased brother’s, Lucas’s. 

Andrina- honestly she’s not big into accessories. She mostly does it for special occassions like going out or something but on the day to day she cant be bothered

Merida- lmao no Merida doesn’t know how to accessorize and avoids it at all costs. 

Mowgli- Mowgli loooves accessories much like Hades, and has lots of pretty jewelry that his mother bought him.
