Spending the summer with your aunt wasnt something you planned for when school ended. It meant church every Sunday, and Wednesday night. It meant no wifi and being stranded in a strange town on the border of Georgia and Alabama.

You’d never been to Georgia and the possibility of driving to Florida to go to the beach was enough to convince you 5 weeks wasn’t that long. The 10 hour drive there lasted longer than the summer escape.

The first few weeks were exactly what you expected. Church, shopping, eating your aunts famous fried chicken livers, talking on the porch late into the night. On the third Sunday, after church, she informs you that you’re taking a trip to Alabama. Her grandson is coming to spend the week. You both needed to go pick him up from her daughter.

It took 4 hours to get there, napping made it feel like 30 minutes. Your aunt pulled up to a trailer park, and you scan your surroundings. You were even further in the middle of nowhere, then what you were at your aunts house. You always wanted to know the way out. But here, a 2 mile dirt road separates you from the highway you turned off of. You take notice of the neighbors, one had a pool out front, some older ladies floating on pool noodles waved at your aunt, they must know her. The neighbors on the other side of your cousins house weren’t so inviting.

You saw a toddler sitting in the dirt crying. Watching up at his parents flinging spit in each others faces. You avert your gaze when the man flicks his eyes over to you. You know men like that, they’re terrifying and unpredictable. He could walk over to you and start on you just for glancing in his direction. Your aunt ushers you into her daughters house, not wanting you to see the altercation.

You hadn’t seen your cousin since you were a little girl. Now she has a little boy. It was weird. Your family was so large, it was impossible to keep up with everyone. You had many cousins you hadn’t seen since Christmas of ‘06. After a ham sandwich and barbecue chips you were ready to leave, it was more boring here, and your cousin even had cable. You aunt must’ve noticed your boredom, offering a swim in her friends pool out front.

“But I didn’t bring a bathing suit?” You say grinning, knowing you’d go naked if it meant you could swim. “Just wear your bra and I’ll go ask the neighbor if she has some shorts that will fit you.” Your aunt says, swinging open the screen door. You nod your head, quickly braiding your hair to keep it out of your face. You almost lose your spot, twisting knots into your hair when the blonde woman from next door walks in, smiling. “Hey, your aunt said you needed some shorts?”.

You hop up from the couch. “Yes, thank you, I don’t know if we’re even close to the same size but what can it hurt to try?” You give her a soft smile. She looked like a wounded animal. She was way too nice to be getting yelled at like that. You wonder what set him off. But you know better than to ask. “Tanya, your kids crying.” You both look behind her to the open door. The dark haired man was standing there, looking thoroughly disgusted. When his eyes find you again, you have nowhere to hide. “Your aunt says you guys are staying the night.” He informs you, walking away. You furrow your eyebrows, why wouldn’t your aunt tell you that herself?

“She did, James needs a ride into town tomorrow and your aunt couldn’t say no.” She gives you a tight lipped smile. She knows a young girl would rather be spending her summer somewhere else. Once you squeezed into the shorts, you bolted to the pool, with a quick introduction to Sherry and Barb, sisters who owned the park. They were nice, asked you questions and treated you like family. Your aunt must really know them, you had no clue how.

Tanya and your aunt walked across the grass and climbed into the pool. Tanya tightly held onto a bottle of Budweiser, letting you know the night was already starting. You dunk your head, wanting to wash away the sweat from your forehead. When you resurface you see James stomping towards the pool, his shirt missing and motor oil smeared on his chest. “Drinking beer but not watching your kid I wish I could be surprised.” That’s when you notice a little boy in his hands, floaties tightly wrapped around his arms and body. He snatched the brown bottle from her hands, tossing the boy into the pool. “I got shit to do.” He walked away, finishing the beer and throwing the empty bottle to the ground.

After two more hours in the pool, your cousin came out looking for your aunt, leaving you alone with the Tanya and the baby. “Are you happy?” You finally ask, only because you’re truly alone with her. Her eyes well with tears, she shakes her head no. You move across the pool grabbing the boy you’d become acquainted with. You pulled yourself out of the water, not bothering to dry off, but you wrapped the boy in a towel. The sun was setting and it wasn’t warm enough for him to be out here wet. “I’ll be right back.” You give her a firm nod, carrying him in the direction of her house. She just watched helplessly as you turn the corner out of site.

Your heart started beating faster as you walked up to the trailer, knocking on the door. You try to think of what to say as you wait for him to open the door. You hear cursing from the other side before it’s swung open. He stands there for a minute, holding the door open before you realize he’s inviting you in. You step up, still holding onto the toddler. You don’t move from the doormat, afraid of tracking water through the house. “You can lay him down on the couch.” He says, pointing toward the corner of the room. You nod, padding your feet across the cold linoleum. You didn’t even notice the boy fell asleep in your arms, swimming always tuckers out kids. You straighten your back when you feel water droplets sliding down the inside of your thigh, pooling water at your feet.

“I’m so sorry, I didn’t even dry off before bringing him.” You look at the ground, wondering how you could fix the wet footprints that painted his floor. “I’m not.” He says but you barely catch it. “Huh?” You ask.

“Don’t be sorry, it’s just water honey.” You look up at him, not believing his sincerity. His blue eyes are piercing into yours. “Okay, well I better get back to the pool.” He watches you as you walk out of the door, he doesn’t make room for you to slip past him, causing you to turn your body towards him, he smelled good, you don’t know how. He was covered in black dirt from under the car, and sweat. He still wasn’t wearing a shirt and his tanned skin was so smooth, save for the happy trail growing up his stomach.

He was a lot older than you, more than 15 years, you’d guess. But you couldn’t tell standing this close to him. Your brain forces you out of the door. If you stood there in the tension for a second longer you don’t know what stupid thing would come out of your mouth. When you got back to the pool everyone had rejoined Tanya, even your aunt and cousin were drinking. You escape to your cousins house, changing back into your leggings and putting on your t-shirt. You check on your baby cousin, he’s sleeping in his room, not a worry in the world. You take the chance to spend a minute alone and turn on the tv.

You don’t even care to change the channel, SpongeBob played, lulling you to sleep. You’re awoken by your aunt, handing you the neighbor boy. “Will you watch him for a minute?” You just nod, and she’s out of the house. You peak through the curtain to see blue lights out front. Why are the cops here? You rock the boy to sleep, laying him down beside your cousin in his bed. When you walk outside everyone’s gone. The cops, your aunt, the neighbors. “What the hell.” You say out loud. You go knock on Sherrys door, hoping your aunt was there. But no one answered. Walking across the grass field someone caught your attention. It’s James, yelling at his trailer. “You don’t love me anyways, bitch.” He throws another beer bottle, this one smashes against the siding of the house. “I should’ve never fucked you and let you have my kid.” You stop in your tracks when he turns around, obviously drunk. “Hey.” He says, slowly walking towards you. “Are you okay?” You ask naïve as ever.

“I’m a good person, right?” He asks. You don’t know what to say, not wanting to tip him off that you were shitting your pants right now.

“Yes, you seem like a really good dad.” You’re trying to deescalate. “I am.” His voice is a little louder than it should be. “I don’t doubt it.” You’re still standing in the same spot, too afraid to move. “You’re nice.” He says, smiling widely. You give him one back, he hadn’t done anything to you yet, you weren’t going to give him a reason to.

It was no secret that you were nervous. Your breathing was fast and your eyes kept darting past him. “You don’t have to be scared. There’s nothing to be afraid of.” He throws his hands in the air. “I’m not going to hurt you.” He says, stepping closer to you again. “Everyone hurts me. Treats me like I’m not worth anything.” He lets his head hang, and you start to feel guilt building inside of you, this man just needed someone to lean on. “I’m not worthless, right?” He looks up at you with tears in his eyes. You know he’s drunk, but this pain was real.

“You’re worth more than you know.” It was cliche, but a true blanket statement, no one knows their true worth. “Thank you.” He says, wiping his eyes. “I just need someone to hold me for once.” You felt that, you knew exactly what he meant. “Wanna hug?” You offer, knowing that sometimes that’s all people need, church the last three weeks had taught you that. Sometimes a smile and a handshake is all the human contact people get all week.

He just looks at you, expecting you to close the gap between you. So you do, you walk towards him, fear in the form of sweat, still dripping from you. You give him a warm smile as you lay your head on his chest, wrapping your arms around his middle. His hands quickly found your hips, pulling you even closer to him. He squeezed you tightly, and you swear you hear him smell your hair. You try to pull away after an awkward silence falls over the two of you, but he won’t let you go.

“I’m sorry you’re going through stuff man, I am.” You say, patting his shoulder to tell him to let go. You feel his body go rigid against yours so you think he’s crying again. Drunk tears are never ending. “It’s okay.” You wrap your arms around him again, rubbing up and down his bare back. You try to pull away again, this time saying something “Don’t want Tanya to come out here and catch you hugging a stranger, probably best we let go now.”

His silence was a thousand words. Then he spoke, “You can’t do that.” He says lowly. You pull away and try to look at his face. “What are you talking about?” You ask, fear filling you again. He looks into your eyes, letting one of his hands slide down to the curve of your ass. You instantly put your hands on his chest and try to push him away. “You can’t be sweet to me and expect me not to like it.” His voice was different now, desperate. He presses his face into your neck, sloppily kissing up to your jaw.

Your heart is beating out of your chest now, and you stop fighting, not wanting to anger him. “You don’t want to cheat on your wife, you’re just drunk.” You try to break through to him. “You don’t know me.” He says, pulling you towards the back yard. “No I don’t, but you seem like a good man, don’t let a drunken mistake ruin what you’ve built for yourself.” You keep trying to persuade him.

“I wasn’t drunk earlier, when I watched you bend over in my living room, dripping wet. I wanted you then, just didn’t say anything.” He says, pressing you against your cousins house. He breathes in your face, and you smell more than beer on his breath, whiskey was pungently invading your nose. “So what? You like me or something?” You ask, confused on where this was going.

“Something like that.” He says, pressing his lips to yours. You’re shocked, you thought you were gonna be able to talk your way out of it. “This isn’t right.” You stop the kiss, nodding towards his trailer. You look between his eyes and try to find some common sense. “Then why does it feel right?” He grabs your hand, forcing you to cup the hard mass in his pants.

You gasp, you’d never felt one before, your virginity not up for debate, you’d never even had a boyfriend. “See, you like it too.” It’s like he’s trying to convince you. You look between him and the houses, searching for a witness. When you couldn’t find a soul, you stop fighting all together. He feels your body relax and takes it as permission to pull your leggings down. “Hey!” You say, but you guess it was too loud for his liking because he covers your mouth with his hand, looking you dead in the eye while his fingers push past your panties and dip inside of you. “You like being scared little girl?” He pulls his hand away from you, licking his fingers and tasting you.

Him reading you like a book was also a turn on. You stay silent, telling him everything he needs to know. He twist your body, pressing your face into the plastic. “Maybe you like it rough too, huh?” He slaps your bare ass, rubbing the raised red welt to soothe it.

You whimper, you’re going to let him have his way with you. If this was the only eventful thing that happens this summer, then what the hell. Tanya wasn’t happy and neither was he, who were you to interfere with destiny?

Blunder at the Farmers' Market

Summary: The moms send Jamie and Baxter to the market for some groceries. She gets distracted and makes a rather humiliating mistake.

Rating: K+ - Suitable for more mature childen, 9 years and older, with minor action violence without serious injury. May contain mild coarse language. Should not contain any adult themes.

Notes: I’m changing my mind on Baxter. I’m kind of looking forward for his DLC, though I got some spoilers and I didn’t like what I’ve heard. Oh, well...

It was a nice, Saturday morning. Just perfect for a stroll at the farmer’s market, which the moms made sure to send out their youngest daughter to run that errand for them.

Luckily for Jamie, who hates driving, one of their neighbours also had half a mind to go out for some grocery shopping just as she was leaving. Not Cove, though, who was out in Nevada helping out his mother, Baxter was the one in need of some restocking to his fridge. He told her that he was glad to drive her if she was so kind to point him on the right direction and tell him the better stands over there.

Instead of the usual “divide and conquer”, they preferred to walk together, tackling neighbouring vendors at the time, with one ordering them for both households, electing to run the tally when they get home, for convenience. The young man had a small cart in which they could ferry their purchases without too much effort, and, should they elect to pack them separately, they might not fit too comfortably on the inconveniently-sleek car of his.

Jamie shifted her weight between her feet, as she starts to grow tired from walking, while she waits for the honey seller to finish packing up the jars she ordered. She twirled a pen on her fingers, she used it to mark down the price and volume of each purchase, making sure she both does not forget anything nor ends up short when settling with her neighbour.

After a few minutes, the middle-aged woman hands her the paper bag with a commercial smile.

“Will you and your husband be needing anything else?” The attendant asks, helpfully.

Husband. The word stops her heart and her movements. That was one big assumption to make about an admittedly-precocious nineteen-year-old and her twenty-one-year-old companion, but one not entirely unwelcome or unwarranted.

They had been involved over his time at Sunset Bird, and it would be fair to say that the thought of Baxter adorning such a title, as her husband or even something more casual, such a boyfriend or a date, has been in her mind as of late. It has been a while since she figured out that she had a bit of a preference towards him, a very strong preference, though the words have never been spoken out loud until now. A shame neither of them were the one to do it.

It was certainly something she could get used to.

“This should be it, thank you.” The girl responded.

Gripping the pen in her hand tighter, with a smile she could not suppress even if she tried her hardest, she returns to writing down the last of the items she was supposed to be ordering for her neighbour, as he remains busy talking with another merchant. They are mostly done, and could probably sit down for an early lunch as soon as he was done haggling the price of eggplants with the old man running the stall.

A sense of boredom takes over her mind. She leans on the small cart, filled to the brim with bags and boxes, and begins to doodle on the tiny notebook on her hands.

Soon, she finds herself signing a name. Jamie Ward. It has a sound to it.

Her heart flutters and her whole chest blossoms with warmth as she writes her name followed by a surname that did not belong to her. She stares at the letters on her own cursive and finds it quite fetching.

How perfect his name looks with hers. Someday, would that really be her name?

Oh, well, this is not something she really ought to be concerned with as of right now. Eggplants should take precedence on her mind. That, however, is a most boring topic, so she turns the page on her notebook and starts doodling once again.

Some three minutes or so later, Baxter finishes his conversation with the vendor and walks back to where his neighbour waited for him.

“Hey. Sorry for taking so long.” He greeted, cheery.

“Don’t worry. I’m glad you get such low prices on everything. I get to keep the change, you know?” She smiled in return. It was then she realises he was still empty-handed. “Where are the eggplants?”

“Ah, I got 75% off them, but only if I took the ones they thought they wouldn’t be able to sell. They got to pick them up from the truck, so it’s going to take a few more minutes.” He explains, rather sheepish, embarrassing for having a lady wait for him on the sun. “Can I have a piece of paper, please? To write down the order.”

“Sure.” She turned a page on the notebook, ripped it off and handed it to him.

“Sorry again for taking so long. Would you like to go ahead to the car? I can give you the key.” He offers.

The girl shakes her head. “No, no, it’s no problem for me. I’m just going to stand here for a little while longer, people-watching and doodling. Don’t worry.”

“OK, then. I shouldn’t take too much longer.” He said and walked off, back to the stand.

With Baxter still preoccupied with his discount eggplants, she decides to have a look around the neighbouring stands. A few storefronts down, a couple of local New Age communes were selling their products. It is filled with jewellery, crystals, books and other odds and ends, as well as a few cookie recipes that lacked flour, milk, eggs and just about anything that she would consider necessary to define something as such.

Jamie smiled. That is the fun about the farmer’s market, you never know what you are going to find. With the odd list of items her neighbour asked for, it is no wonder that they had to come here, even if it was a good few ways out Sunset Bird. She chalked up to his privileged upbringing.

As the young woman walks around and checks the merchandise at the stands, the little cart pulled behind her, she ends up hanging around her paramour as he impatiently waits for his produce. His conversation with the vendor had long ended and, as she stands closer, his arm snakes around her shoulders.

He pulls her closer and kisses the top of her head. “Are you too tired, Jamie?”

The sound of his voice, the small smile on his face that he often wears when speaking to her, pulls her in like a moth to a flame. She lets her hand lay on the other side of his hip, enjoying the soft heat he radiates warming the tips of her fingers. She is unable to not get lost in his eyes when they stare at her so softly and lovingly.

How Jamie become so lucky to receive such devoted, gentle love, she will never know, but she would always accept it for as long as Baxter was willing to give it to her.

She smiled bashfully. “Well, I wouldn’t say no to some lunch.”

“It shouldn’t take much longer now. Where would you like to eat?”

“Ah, nothing too heavy nor too hot. The sun is making me dizzy.” She complained lightly.

He smirked at her. “You really should’ve taken Liz’s hat when she offered it to you.”

The young woman made a grimace. “It’s too big! I’d look ridiculous on it.”

“Well, have some water if you feel sick, alright?” He offered, slightly concerned about her health. “Did you see anything…?”

His words are cut off by the merchant that helped him before. “Mrs. Ward? Here you are.”

Her arm is barely touching his, but even through such little contact, she can feel him stiffen the moment both of them hear the name listed on the order.

The older man carried a paper bag with a note stapled on the flap, written on the notebook sheet she had given Baxter a few minutes prior. On it, on a bold blue ink, was her practice signature.

Jamie Ward

A moment of silence falls between them as they try to wrap their heads around the situation. Embarrassment fill both of them.

“Ah, yes.” He tears his attention away from her and reaches for the paper bag the vendor has handed him. “Thank you.”

The vendor looks at them concernedly, likely predicting another round of haggling from the cost-conscious young man. “Does everything look okay with your order?”

The question goes unanswered for quite a while and she swears that the only noise in the whole market is the erratic beating of her heart as she watches her date’s porcelain skin burn red and brighter than the shirt on her back, from his cheeks to the tips of his ears. He seems so shocked he cannot even find it in himself to try to cover his blushing cheeks like he normally would and her own cheeks are not any better.

Should Jamie just run away in embarrassment and hope he does not question her about it later? She would not be able to carry all the produce on the bus back to Sunset Bird, but she does not think her neighbour would just keep them, likely handing them over to her mothers. What if he is not okay with this? They have not discussed how it is going to be between them after the summer, lest of all something so big like marriage. What if he is not ready and she has seriously overstepped some boundaries? Well, overstep she absolutely did. The question now is by how much.

The longer Baxter stays silent, his ember eyes glued to the paper in his hands, the worse her anxieties grow.

Well, maybe Jamie should just take it lighter. It might be just her brain talking over her heart that is making her worried, all for naught. There is no doubt of his love and devotion in her heart or his own and, even though he is not saying anything at this moment, the beating heart in his chest is screaming in excitement, even if his face expressed clear surprise, not that she can really blame him. He had not excepted it and it can naturally send him through a whirlwind of emotions that are very hard to comprehend. She should just wait until he could express them to her privately and own up to her little mistake.

She is right that there is a whirlwind of emotion going through his heart, though not those that she expected. He has known for a long time that he wanted her to be his forever and that he would be quite happy to pursue whatever this is to its logical conclusions, whatever those may be. He is beyond grateful for the patience she has shown him until this point, with his flirty and flighty behaviour and skittish demeanour.

However, it does not mean that the idea was in any way pleasant to him. He appreciated being together, being “couple-y”, but he understands that this is not to last. He is selfish and he wants to take as much as he can get, but when Labour Day comes, he will leave California and forget all about these people, no matter how he feels about them.

If he was a good person, he would avoid them at all costs, behave like the ghost he hopes to be, but he is not good. He is bad, and so he pretends he means to stay, that he intends to be true to his feelings and his promises. Seeing Jamie believe in him makes it more real to him, it reminds him of what he is doing, and it hurts.

Even if it took him a while to open up, he feels that, ever since their dance at the country club so many years ago, his heart has always belonged to her, everything that was Baxter Ward was hers. Seeing his surname signed on her adorably round handwrit like it belonged to her only makes him think he has been foolish to think that he could just disappear from her life and leave nothing behind. If he wanted to have just a casual summer fling, he should really have picked someone else.

The air around them is almost uncomfortably hot, both of their blushes burning brightly on their skin. Jamie needed to break the tension before they both combust in a flame of awkwardness but, the moment she perks up to speak his name and ask him if he is alright, he clears his throat and finally answers the merchant.

“Yes, everything seems to be in order. Thank you.” The young man responds, an easy smile on his face.

His voice had that charming lilt as it normally had, even though his cheeks are still tinted a lovely shade of red and his lips are tugged into a usually unseen sincere smile. His free hand finds hers, long fingers slipping between the spaces of her own and squeezing tenderly.

“Come on, Mrs. Ward. Let’s grab some lunch.” He says, teasingly.

A Wonderous Christmas Ch 9

A little while later, the snowflakes slowed down and the Aroura Borealis-like lights begin to grow dimmer. The human guests were beginning to yawn, and the children began to doze off. Balan, noticing the energy declining, decided that it was best to now end the party. "I guess it is time to bid you farewell and goodbye, but the holidays aren't over yet so don't cry. There is still so much left the coming days, and don't forget Christmas is a good days aways." He said, patting a sleepy Tim on it's head.

Leo, while he was still getting tired, had hidden the snowflakes for his mom inside of his bandana, so she wouldn't expect where it might be, however, his eyes were getting dangerously close to closing, and him drifting off to dreamland. "Must...stay...awake..." He told himself, trying to keep his eyes open.

Cal let out a yawn "Hey Balan...how are we supposed to get back? It's snowing like crazy outside." He said. "I can easily use my transportation, it'll get you quickly to your destination." He said. However, THAT got everyone's attention as they all let out a loud 'NO!!". Balan was caught off guard by the shout, and landed face first into the snow. Yuri was quick to help him back up.

"Erm...What we meant Balan was, Uh...well, We...Don't exactly want to go through that wormhole again, because it was...much." she said. Balan took Yuri's hand as he stood back up "Oh don't worry Yuri, I know the predicament, but you see, That's not what I meant!" He said. The visiting guests looked confused, until Balan snapped his fingers, making the Wonderworld express appear "All Aboard!" He yelled as he flew to the engine

The humans boarded the train as Balan blew the whistle, signaling it was time to go. Soon, the Wonderworld Express slowly began to chug on its magic tracks away from the Isle and into the dimming Borealis. Haoyu stuck his head out of the window and dipped his hands into the glimmering lights. To his wonder, his hand seemed to create extra streams of light, like a split in a waterfall.

"Haoyu! Be careful!" Lin Lin Chang cried, worried for her son's well-being. "I know mom, I'm being careful." Haoyu said before sticking himself back inside. Iben and Aria struck up a friendly conversation after Phil and Lila fell asleep, while Trisha Jane and Cal were head to head in a game of Chess (and Trisha Jane was winning, much to Cal's shock)

Jose, Nancy, and Miguel had been chatting with tye Brand family, while Mei and her siblings were making origami Lotus flowers. Meanwhile, Leo and Emma were chatting among themselves about Alice's gift, when Rebecca asked Cal if they could switch places. While he found the request a tad bit odd, he soon found himself sitting across from Lucy...and a sprig of mistletoe had magically appeared above them.

Cal felt his cheeks get EXTREMELY warm, and his face turned a bright shade of red. Lucy giggled at his flustered form, and gave him a smooch on the nose. Cal's eye shrunk and he Gave a lovestuck smile as he gave her a kiss on the cheek in exchange. Bianca and Clem, Cal and Lucy's children giggled at their parents kisses under the mistletoe, while Rebecca and Trisha Jane gave a knowing look.

Eis and Sana were snuggling with eachother under Eis's rather large coat, while Bruce and Mara were holding each other's hands gazing at the world outside. Soon, the other children had fallen asleep due to Thea singing to the Bruno Childen, her voice singing a soothing version of various Christmas carols. By the middle of "White Christmas" Every child, both young and teen, had dozed off to sleep.

"Well, You certainly have a soothing voice." Attilio said. "Yep! A singer has to have a good selection of songs to sing." Thea said. "You should try singing in Christmas Rose Park one of these days." He suggested. "That would be fun! Maybe I'll do it over the holidays." She said before snuggling up with Stefan.

A little while later, the train had become quiet and still. The visiting humans had all fallen to the call of sleep. Balan and Lance looked into the car and smiled at the peaceful sight. Balan saw Fiona shivering in her sleep, and summoned a blanket for her, causing her to smile and stop shivering.

"Well, We're in for a peaceful ride. It was a good idea to let them come inside." Balan whispered to Lance. The two maestros took their own seats in the train and got comfortable (on opposing sides of the car) while their clones drove the train onwards to the real world...

I’m Looking Forward Now 💖Thank you and good bye

So, it’s been a little over a week since Steven Universe Future ended… 

I’ve been hesitant to write this, honestly, but I’m tired of holding myself back from properly expressing myself in fear of appearing overly invested in the media I consume, even in private. Writing helps me organize my thoughts and feelings, and I feel like these thoughts in particular may resonate with many, so I want to share them. I want to talk about what Steven Universe has done for me personally, both as an artist, and as a person.

I’ve been around since the day the first episode of the original series aired. I actually remember when Steven Universe was just a logo on Wikipedia’s “List of Upcoming Cartoon Network Shows” list, back when I was a freshman in high school. It piqued my interest, but when commercials finally dropped for it, I thought it was going to be bad because of the way marketing handled introducing Steven as a likeable character. There was still something about it that made me want to give it a chance though, so I went online and watched the pilot before the first episode's release. I was hooked immediately. I knew I was going to love it, and I did. I fell so absolutely in love with Steven as a character, and the world that he and the gems lived in. I became obsessed. I was always so excited for new episodes to come out. Little did I know what else it would do for me as I went through my adolescence alongside it.

As the show progressed, it was evident that what I wanted out of a western animated childrens’ cartoon was finally coming into fruition: this show was becoming serialized. There was continuity, there was plot, there was character development-- it was getting deep. It was pushing the groundwork that Adventure Time laid out even further (thank you, Adventure Time).  

I will give credit where credit is due: earlier western childrens’ cartoons I grew up with like Hey Arnold, and Rugrats, among others, also touched on heavy topics, but Steven Universe was able to take similar ideas (and even more complex ones, concerning mental health and relationships) and expand on them outside of contained episodes and/or short arcs. These themes, which were a part of the show’s overarching story, spanned across its entirety. Continuity was rampant. 

What did this mean? It meant kids cartoons didn’t have to be silly and fun all the time and characters weren’t just actors playing a part in 11-minute skits. Steven and the gems would remember things that happened to them, and it affected them and how they would function and play a part in their story. This was a huge deal to me as a teenager. I always wanted the cartoons I grew up with featuring kid characters to feel more. In my own work, I often felt discouraged when combining a fun, cutesy western art style with themes as dark or layered as anime would cover. I always thought it had to be one or the other because an audience wouldn’t take a combination of the two seriously enough, based on discussions I had with classmates, friends, and online analysis I read at the time. Steven Universe proved to me otherwise. This show was opening the door for future cartoons exploring in-depth, adult concepts. I felt so seen as a kid, and was inspired to stick with what I love doing.

I was actually very worried about the show’s survival. It was in fact immensely underrated and the fandom was miniscule. Then in 2014, JailBreak dropped, and it’s popularity exploded. Part of it was because of the complex plot and the themes it was covering like I mentioned, but also because of its representation. 

I remember when fandom theorized that Garnet was a fusion due to grand, tragic reasons. Turns out, she’s simply a metaphor for a very loving w|w relationship. This was huge. I cannot stress how important it is that we continue to normalize healthy canon queer relationships in childens’ media, and Steven Universe finally was the first to do that proper. Introducing these themes offers the chance for a kid to sit there and ask themselves, “Why is this demonized by so many people?” I asked myself exactly that. Ruby and Sapphire were my cartoon LGBT rep. They were the first LGBT couple I ever ecstatically drew fanart of. I was dealing with a lot of internalized homophobia at the time, and they showed me that I was allowed to love women and feel normal about it. The process of overcoming this was a long one, but they played a part in my very first steps into becoming comfortable with my sexuality. I could go on and on about it’s representation in general-- how it breaks the mold when it comes to showcasing a diverse set of characters in design, in casting, and in breaking gender roles. It’s focus on love and empathy. Steven himself is a big boy, but he's the protagonist, and the show never once makes fun of his weight, or any other bigger characters for that matter. It wasn’t hard to see why the fandom had grown so large.

Fandom was always a joy for me. It was a hobby I picked up when I was in middle school, like many of us here did. I would always cater my experience to fun, and fun only. I only started getting more deeply involved in SU’s fandom when I had just turned into an adult. During the summer of 2016, between my first and second year of college, I drew for the show almost every day non-stop when the Summer of Steven event was going on and posted them online. This was a form of practice for me in order to become not just more comfortable with experimenting with my art, but also to meet new artists, make new friends, and learn to interact with strangers without fear. I dealt with a ton of anxiety when I was in high school. When I was a senior applying to art school for animation, I decided I was going to overcome that anxiety. I made plans to take baby steps to improve myself over the course of my 4 years of college. Joining the fandom, while unforeseen, was definitely a part of that process. I started feeling more confident in sharing my ideas, even if they were fan-made. I fell in love with storyboarding after that summer, when I took my first storyboarding class, and genuinely felt like I was actually getting somewhere with all of this. I remember finally coming to a point in my classes where I could pitch and not feel hopelessly insecure about it. I was opening up more to my friends and peers. 

But this process, unfortunately, came to a screeching halt. 

My life completely, utterly crumbled under me in the Fall of 2017 due to a series of blows in my personal life that happened in the span of just a couple weeks. My mental health and sense of identity were completely destroyed. All of that confidence I had worked for-- completely ruined. I was alone. I nearly died. My stay at college was extended to 4 and half years, instead of the 4 I had intended. I lost my love for animation-- making it, and watching it. I could no longer watch Steven Universe with the same love I had for it beforehand. It’s a terrible thing, trying to give your attention to something you don’t love anymore, and wanting so desperately to love again. I dropped so many things I loved in my life, including the fandom.

Healing was a long and complicated road. I continued to watch the show all the way up until Change Your Mind aired in the beginning of 2019, and while I still felt empty, that was definitely a turning point for me with it’s encapsulation of self-love. I was hoping James Baxter would get to work on Steven Universe since he guest-animated on Adventure Time, and it was incredible seeing that wish actually come true. The movie came out and while I enjoyed it and thought highly of it, I was still having issues letting myself genuinely love things again, old and new. It was especially difficult because cartoons were my solace as a kid, when things got rough at home. I remember feeling sad because the show ended, and not getting the chance to love it again like I used to while it was still going.

By the time Steven Universe Future was announced, I was finally coming around. I was genuinely starting to feel excitement for art and animation again. I wasn’t expecting there to be a whole new epilogue series, but happily ever after, there we were! Prickly Pear aired, and the implications it left in terms of where the story was going did it. I was finally ready to let myself take the dive back into fandom in January of this year. My art blew up, something I wasn’t expecting considering my 2-year hiatus. Following this, I was invited into a discord server containing some of the biggest writers, artists, editors, and analysts in the fandom. I had no idea there were so many talented people in the fandom, some already with degrees, some getting their degrees-- creating stuff for it on the side just for fun. The amount of passion and productivity level here is insane, and so is the amount of discussion that has come out of it.

I didn’t realize it at first, but it was actually helping me gain back the courage to share ideas. I lost my confidence in pitching while I was taking the time to heal, and graduating meant there would no longer be a classroom setting I could practice in. This group helped immensely. 

I have made so many friends through this wonderful series, and I have so many fond memories talking to like-minded creatives, getting feedback and a myriad of sources for inspiration, as well as all of the memes and jokes and weekly theorizations that came about as we all waited on the edges of our seats for episodes to air. I needed this so badly, I needed to get back in touch with my roots, when I would go absolutely hog-wild over a cartoon I loved with people who loved it as much I did. Future has been a blessing for me in this way. I graduated feeling like I was back at square-one, but now I feel like I’m on my way again.

It’s 2020 and while I’m doing great right now, I am honestly still recovering from the total exhaustion that followed after graduating a few months ago, and finally leaving the campus where my life fell apart behind. Needless to say, watching Future was like looking into a mirror. Watching one of my favorite characters of all time-- one that grew up with me-- go through so many of the same things I went through not too long ago was absolutely insane to watch unfold. It’s such an important thing too, to show a character go through the process of breaking down over trauma and all the nasty things that come with it, and to have them go on the road to healing. Steven got that therapy. He wasn’t blamed. The gems were called out. The finale was everything I could have ever hoped for. The catharsis I experienced watching it was out of this world.

As I continue my own healing journey, I will always look up to the storyboard artists, revisionists, and designers that I have been following over these past 7 years, as well as the new ones introduced in Future. It's been such a joy watching these artists release their promo art for episodes, talk about their experiences working on the show, and post the work they've done for it alongside episodes airing.

Thank you Rebecca Sugar, the Crewniverse, and the fans, for making this such a truly wonderful and unique experience. Thank you for reminding me that I am, and always will be, an artist, a cartoonist, and a fan. Thank you, my followers, for the overwhelmingly positive response to my artwork. I have had so much fun interacting and discussing the show with you all again over these past few months. Steven Universe and it’s fandom will always have a special place in my heart, and it will always be a classic that I will return to for comfort and inspiration for decades to come. I am sad that the cartoon renaissance is over, but so many doors have been opened thanks to this show. I am so, so excited to see what this show will inspire in the future, and I hope one day I get the opportunity to be a part of that. 

Goodbye Steven, thank you for everything. I wish you healing, and I wish Rebecca and the team a well-deserved rest. ♥️

🎁 + Usually when it comes to gifts Bor prefers to make things himself since it'll be more personal than bought ones. The gift they had in mind for him was probably one that Vince might not trust if it was made by the demon themselves, at least in their mind. In the middle of Vincent's plants was an empty pot with a red bow, A shop's label was right on the sides reading 'Rhyne's singing garden', the rest was in... um looks like a mix of Latin and Sylven. One thing was clear in what it does, plant's potted in these can sing to its tender to show them their health, mood, and status. On top of the red bow are just a calling card of the demon's sigil and a poorly drawn roachie.

Instantly Vincent recognizes something out of place amongst the plants by the far wall and bristles, considering if he needs to set traps in this place like he does to his proper gardens. This is a place that he allows others to shelter, but if there is a threat to his childen here..?

A step closer eases the tension though. No damage to them at least, not much moved, the intent here seems..kind. Just another pot with a bow, marking it as a gift.

Crouching to read the tag, it appears to be from some sort of shop of supernaturals. It clarifies what it's meant for and he..loves it. A tool to better care for his children. Something that matters.

Then he sees the mark of who it's from.

That jolt of excitement is a powerful emotion, but it's quashed by an opposing confusion just as strong.

Why.

Why.

WHY FROM THEM? What REASON do they have to do this except to taunt him?

HOW can they treat him like this? HOW can they treat him like cattle in one breath and in the next like a FRIEND, not just in that agonizingly fake cheer, but THIS? If he and its previous targets were just meaningless, replaceable bags of emotion and flesh to squeeze dry, WHY WITH THESE CHARADES? He can accept what this arrangement is, but the lying, The outright LYING, obscuring his ability to read what's real or where things stand is an agitation that crawls in his flesh. He. Hates. To so blatantly not be able to read someone.

Bor may have been careful to choose a store bought item to avoid Vincent's paranoia, but he still finds his way to spiral. There's too much conflict in him to avoid it.

FUCK. A series of clicks starts in his throat, a not-quite-growl.

The empty pot is gripped in both hands, and the urge to smash it against the flooring overtakes him, to deny a LIE, and to see, will something infused in magic blow up when the enchantment is ruined, will it burn? Go up in flames and burn? Will it spark, or will it die QUIET. He hopes it burns into his palms, HE WANTS TO RUIN IT.

But he can't. For all of the things that he takes care of here, he can't. The thought of what it is and what it could be sets excitement alight again even in this upset. This!! THIS. WHY WOULD IT GIVE SO MUCH!? Something so useful, this could be a foolproof introduction pot for everything he's never grown, never had a chance to know! The care requirements for anything new would be so easy to learn! When they could tell him what they need, he'd know how often or how much of anything a new species requires! Or in disease-in disease will it let him know what's hurting, what's damaging what? Will he be better able to recognize how to treat insect damage, viruses, infections?

And to HEAR them!! To hear them at all! Communication, allowing him to do better by them in so many ways.

His clicking grows loud, a deep rumbling growing underneath of it. If he wasn't holding the pot, his claws would be deep in his own palms, if not worse. Shakily, the pot is set down atop one of his few shelves and he drags himself outside still growling, needing fresh air in his lungs.

He's.. normal now! He's fine!

He just. Needs. To hunt something. Now. Now.

I first off like to say that a part of me is disappointed that we didn’t actually get the clash of the titans between Revolver and Soulburner. That duel would have just been so epic and I’m crossing my fingers so hard that they will end up having a rematch in the future. I’m very thankful though that the writers didn’t go the route I seriously thought they would have by having Lightning’s group show up to interrupt the duel just so Soulburner wouldn’t have actually lose because lets be real here, with the way he was acting, Revolver would have kicked his ass so badly if he wanted to. 

No, I’m genuinely surprised how much I enjoyed this episode. Like holy crap, this was amazing for character development and season 1 nostalgia. This is a obvious statement but jesus everyone in this show needs therapy, even those that went to therapy need more therapy!

First off let’s talk about Takeru/Soulburner. This episode really solidified a big character flaw of his. His emotions. When his anger gets the better of him, he really doesn’t not think straight. His dueling, while it might not seem like it on the surface, was just so rash, summoning his ace monster whose effect makes it so much better to summon it in the late game but he summoned it right out of the gate just to have a big beater on the field. And I just love how Flame was the one to address this. He was willing to risk Flame’s very life, when it wasn’t necessary in the first place, just to get his revenge on Revolver. And guess what, he didn’t care. He put his own partner’s existence at risk, not thinking of the consequences of his actions, because all he was thinking about in that very moment was getting even at Revolver for the Hanoi Project and his parents’ death. If Revolver was actually going to be dueling for keeps, he would have destroyed him because Soulburner wasn’t thinking straight at all. He would have lost Flame because his anger got the best of him in that moment. Interesting implications for what this could mean for the future because now that this fatal flaw of Takeru’s has been addressed, it is definitely going to come back to bite him in the ass and the next time this happens, he is going to lose Flame and who knows how Takeru is going to react to that. After all, Flame is the one that has been helping Takeru through all of his problems, the one that has been addressing his problems and helping him find a solution for them. His depression, his lack of confidence in himself, his anger. I’m genuinely worried about Takeru’s emotion state if he actually does lose Flame. It is definitely not going to be pretty.

Now Ryoken/Revolver. Oh my god, and I thought his guilt complex was bad during season 1. It seriously has gotten so much worse during season 2. Now I know the fandom is very divided when it comes to Ryoken/Revolver as a character. You either love his guts or you want to stab said guts. There really is no middle ground when it comes to him. Still, regardless if you hate the guy or love him, you can’t deny his impact on the show. This guy has had a hand in everything that has happen at this point. And that really has not been a good thing for Ryoken’s mental state. This whole duel, Revolver allowed Soulburner to use him as a punching bag to unleash his frustration on because in his eyes, he probably thinks he deserves it as the son of the man who destroyed Takeru’s life. And it is just sad because when it comes to the Hanoi Project, Ryoken did nothing wrong! Yes he was the reason that Yusaku ended up in the Hanoi Project but do I have to restate the fact that he was just a kid! Heck I even went back to episode 43, the episode where we got Ryoken’s backstory, and he even states it himself that he had no idea what was actually going on! So no, you actually can’t blame him for that. If anything, he saved his life! Those six kids probably would have died if Ryoken didn’t do what he did. But as we all know, Ryoken couldn’t feel good about that because life had to guilt him with ever choice he makes. Geez, Ryoken seriously is just the unofficial 7th Lost Child. This single event destroyed his life as well and has continued to destroy it. He became Revolver when he was 13. That just says a lot right there. He is just so obsessed with completing his father’s work that’s lets say he actually does destroy all six Ignises. Then what? Where does he seriously go from there? I don’t know and it is concerning when you remember that he was planning on suicide bombing Link Vrains just to kill the Ignis.

I do like to mention Yusaku/Playmaker role in this whole thing. As good as this duel was for Ryoken and Takeru’s characters, this whole thing probably could have been avoid if he just told Takeru what the heck was up when it come to Revolver. Yeah we know Yusaku isn’t some social butterfly, and in his mind probably didn’t think it was his right to tell Takeru about Ryoken without his permission, but you seriously didn’t tell Takeru anything?! You could have left the detail out about who Revolver actually was, again that feels like something Ryoken should do personally (and holy crap he actually did in front of everyone. That made my jaw drop when he revealed his real life identity to everyone) but you could have at least told him that Revolver was the one to save you guys from the Hanoi Project and inform him that he wasn’t the one directly responsible for it. I feel like this is a trust issue between them that needs to be addressed but isn’t going to be. Yusaku has shown that he’s a bit protective of Takeru after the whole Blood Shepherd’s incident but that doesn’t mean you just leave the guy in the dark when it comes to the same event that you both were apart of. He has a right to know as well, Yusaku. I mean yeah he needed to get that build up anger out of his system but this situation still could have been handled so much better if you just told him the truth. Though with that in mind, I take it he doesn’t know about Spectre being a Lost Child either? Yeah we just need to sit Takeru down and tell him everything huh?

Now for the other half of the episode. The return of the Tower of Hanoi. Holy crap, that was awesome. I love when shows take a symbol that was once used as destruction and turn it into something the heroes can use later down the line. The Tower of Hanoi has essentially been turned into the symbol of the alliance between Team Playmaker and the Knights of Hanoi since they all came together to turn it into a locator for Lightning. That was just the highlight of my week. I also liked how Takeru and Flame had a moment together about this alliance. Ryoken knows that Takeru sucks at coding but he still had him show up, knowing that he was going to be pissed at him, just so he could get his anger out of his system. I just love how in his own way Ryoken cares for each of the Lost Incident victims and wants to make up to them for what his father did. They are still going to have to fight against each other later down the line but I’m going to enjoy this alliance and Ryoken being a big brother figure to the Lost Childen as long as I can. On another note, I find it interesting how in this episode we find out how Neo Link Vrains wasn’t even a fixed up and improved Link Vrains but simply a new version of it. The old was so destroyed because of the Tower of Hanoi that SOL Technologies couldn’t fix it or they simply didn’t even try to. Knowing SOL, they probably didn’t even try. 

The Frog and Pigeon. I love how Revolver wasn’t having any of their crap and just trapped them in a hamster ball and just decided on the spot that “hey I have a frog and pigeon as pets now.” I truly do love this meme lord. He really make this show so much more fun. I do like how he allowed them to come along with him and the others when they were entering Mirror Link Vrains. I truly do think Revolver is going to use them to show the world that the Knights of Hanoi are fighting for a good reason and that the Ignises are a threat to humanity. Don’t think the start of season 3 is looking to good in Playmaker’s favor if he and his team are going to be seen as the enemies in that case for supporting humanity’s greatest threat. 

So a last few things to add before I wrap this up. Playmaker/Ai, Soulburner/Flame, Blue Maiden/Aqua, Revolver, and Spectre are the ones heading into Mirror Link Vrains. Ghost Girl is staying behind to watch over normal Link Vrains should Lightning unleash an attack while everyone is gone. Kusanagi is watching over the boys as always, the rest of the Knights are watching over Revolver and Spectre as while as the rest of the network, and Blue Maiden...well she is a strong independent woman who doesn’t need anyone watching over her. We got to see Bohman and Haru during this episode. Bohman seems to be getting his final upgrades and he thanks Haru for watching over him as a brother during his beginning states but Haru just tells him he did so because of his orders. Interesting how Bohman still see Haru as his brother and I wonder if that’s going to have any effect in the upcoming episodes for the both of them? Bohman did say an infamous line from ARC-V, implying that him and Haru are also going to be joining together at some point and it makes it wonder if he’s actually going to go through with that? Ai finally fulfilled his promise to Roboppy and made her smarter and I’m 100% sure that’s going to have some terrible repercussions. Akira seems to have made a program to protect Link Vrains so hopefully he will be joining Ghost Girl soon in guard duty. Windy...I don’t even know what the heck he is wearing. The tiny cape and eyepatch are just amazing. He isn’t to happy about his new appearance though. Seriously hoping his Origin has a similar design because parallels. 

But yeah a really good episode. I bash on this show a lot but when it does good things, they are really good things. The preview is also looking promising because with what we saw of Haru this episode and what was stated about him in the preview, it really looks like Blue Maiden might actually get the win and get through to Haru. This will be a nice call back if so to season 1 during her duel against Spectre on how she tried and failed to save him because she truly didn’t understand him. Maybe this time she will with Haru? If not, and she actually does end up losing, the fake out is real.
