modern games can try and scare you with as many hi-res zombies as they want nothing will EVER beat the sheer adrenaline of running your little pixel character away from another little pixel character moving at moderately high speeds. all my free japanese rpgs downloaded off the internet folks know what i'm talking about

Hey, do you have any rpg maker horror game recommendations?
here is my veryveryvery subjective list of rpgmaker games that i personally played thru. i probably forgot some sorry
(edit: just gonna use this as a masterlist of stuff that i went through)
playing through and/or on the to play list
forest of drizzling rain remake
lisa trilogy
in stars and time by insertdisc5
faves ever
OFF(!!!), mad father (original not the remake), ib, witch's house (read the light novel)
love these
wadanohara, omori, zeno, cat in the box, hylics, elevator hitch, any of the yume nikki stuff (my favorite is yume 2kki online)
like these too
to the moon, cold front, end roll, shtdn, hello charlotte, the gray garden, eloquent countenance, flesh, blood, and concrete, tide up, 8:11, oneshot
just silly
ao oni, superassfuck rpg, misao, too impatient
trashy but i like them but i wouldn't recc these to most people
yanderella, mogeko castle, corpse party
neutral/no strong opinions/mixed feelings; someone will probably find more merit out of these stories than me LOL I know i'm in the minority for my thoughts on certain titles here.
uri's games (mermaid swamp, strange men series, etc.), hello hello world, escaped chasm, angels of death, dreaming mary, grave of traumarei, underworld capital incident, hello...? hello?, alice mare, ayakashi akashi, faust's alptraum, pocket mirror
I did not like these.
savior of the abyss, alone, ann, the dark side of red riding hood
liked a lot but i'm waiting till it's released on steam to finish it
your turn to die
hiatus/dropped but I hear these are worth completing; i just experienced complications on my end
yuppie psycho, witch's heart, dweller's empty path
emphasis on Subjective please don't kill me </3 there are some other games in the #game recc tag that i've made that you should check out!

So what are your thoughts on horror indie games? And would Yuu recommend them?
I like them but I'm too chicken to play tem myself. Of course I like Fnaf, Omori and amnesia. I also loved the Strange Men series if you're into RPG horror. As well as Mermaid Swamp, Paranoiac, Re:Kinder, Ib, Mad Father, Misao, Happy Birthday, The Witch's House, Mogeko Castle, Nadohara and the deep blue sea, Pocket Mirror, Little Goody two shoes, Angel of Deaths that I actually played and finish! And of course Corpse Party. Never got into Yume Nikki or Off though. I didn't like Ao Oni much but HetaOni was fun to watch! Oh and there's this Hetalia fan game called Drematalia that is really fun!
But yeah when it comes to indie my fave are in the RPG horror category. But I like mascott horror too! I can't wait for the next Poppy Playtime chapter, Bendy is getting a movie and yes, I do watch enjoy Banban. I'm not saying it's good, but it is entertaining. I actually strongly suggest you check out the channel Press Start to laugh who made some great Poppy and Banban videos.

what do you think were the best games to come out of that rpg maker horror kick that was going on in the 00s/early 10s? (games like yume nikki, ao oni, mad father, misao etc). also i love white cat thank you for your time
god this is a huge fucking question... i think so many of those games were just utterly perfect in every way that its hard to narrow it down
i think from an objective standpoint i would have to go with ib, the witch's house, yume nikki, misao, and of COURSE lisa the first. i would also personally count the rest of the lisa series too, as all the games were made in rpgmaker, but 2014 and on are a little bit late for the era ur referring to
ao oni is a fucking CLASSIC and inspired so many other games, but i replayed it fairly recently (on stream LMAO) and it really does not hold up very well. there are some really good things about it - the suspense is genuine since, outside of scripted scares, the oni can appear at random - but for the most part its a very one-trick pony, so i wouldnt personally consider it one of the best
mad father is teetering on the "best" line for me; it is a VERY good game, but i do think misao is slightly more interesting/compelling by comparison. the remake did mad father a lot of favors (though not with the new spritework :/), so if that version had come out at the time of the original game, i probably wouldve put it in best tier, but as it stands its just in "very good" tier
also theyre not technically rpgmaker games bc they were made in wolf rpg editor, but i GOTTA give it up to uri and the strange men series - pretty much every single one of those games qualifies as best tier for me. if i had to single out just one it would 100% be mermaid swamp - its a fucking FANTASTIC game and my favorite one of the bunch

Real fuckin stoked about all the rpgmaker horror games I've been playing lately 🥳
Aside from replaying Misao, I've played:
Mermaid Swamp
Wadanohara and the Great Blue Sea
The Crooked Man
Paranoiac
The Sand Man
I'll play the other games in the Strange Men series too!
Games I've played before but not recently are:
Ib (favorite!!!!)
Mad Father (I did play it again like last year on Switch)
The Witch's House (probably played like. 10 years ago.)
I tried to play Desert Nightmare and Substitute Sacrifice Girl, but they wouldn't open properly on my computer. Not giving up on them just yet.

Hi! I was wondering if you have any recommendations for games like pocket mirror? I've played Ib, Yume Nikki, Mad Father, Witches House and I loved them all and I'm wondering if you know any games that are similar to any of these? Thank you! :)
Sure!  Here’s some popular favorites for you to check out c:
Dreaming Mary
Alice Mare
Blank Dream
The Strange Men Series (The Crooked Man, The Sandman, The Boogieman, & The Hanged Man)
Mermaid Swamp
Fantasy Maiden’s Odd Hideout & Cloe’s Requiem
Prom Dreams
Imaginary Friends
End Roll
Seven Mysteries
Miserere
It Moves
Chelsea
Cardiophobia
Two of the people who worked on Pocket Mirror (musician Trass & video editor Asha) worked on Dreaming Mary previously.  Not all of these are quite like each other, but they all have some elements of horror in them with a focus on puzzles & horror (and usually have some well done plot twist)!
If you’re interested in more Yume Nikki in particular, there’s lots of Yume Nikki Fangames you can check out on the wiki!
Hope you enjoy these :D
