Ranking of all the Christmas Horror Movies I’ve seen (as of 2022)

From worst to best (subjectively):

26: Alien Raiders (2008): There are Christmas decorations you see early on in the grocery store setting, so it counts. Just kind of a hostage thriller, that turned out to be sorta The Thing. Liked the twist ending a bit ,though.

25: Anna & the Apocalypse: I wish I can remember this more, especially the songs.

24: Better Watch Out: Way too effective in making you HATE the villain. Though in hindsight, they got off too easy.

23: Good Tidings: I went in thinking this would be more like a yuletide rip off of the Purge movies. But, we once again get those escaped lunatic tropes I’m not too fond of. It didn’t help that there were way too many points where they blew a chance to off one of these psycho killer Santas. I know that’s one of the themes they were going for. But you couldn’t done more to incapacitate one of them.

22: The Wolf of Snow Hollow: The werewolf reveal is a bit of a letdown, but between those scenes, I was morbidly enjoying our disaster of a human being we had in our protagonist. He really couldn’t do anything right.

21: Jack Frost (1997): Mostly enjoyable goofy slasher movie. But it loses on two points; It’s most famous scene has aged horribly, and the climax takes forever to finish him off.

20: Slay Belles: This might’ve been the cheapest one of the whole bunch; it looked it. You can tell most of the money went to the Krampus suit, though that’s probably the right call. Plot doesn’t even make whole lot of sense, but after a while, you just don’t care.

19: All the Creatures were Stirring: Pretty out there anthology. I’m pretty sure each segment is meant to be a Horror-Comedy. I got a special kick out of one having a certain famous Christmas character being a killer (I won’t spoil)

18: Sint: More like a killer St. Nicholas movie. Probably the most threatening of these considering he has an army he can besieged a whole city with. Not crazy about anyone dressing up as Black Pete, but at least they get offed.

17: The Lodge: “F around and find out”

16: Black Christmas (2019): This one feels like it has even less to do with Christmas then the original (Yes, that’s part of my criteria). What was subtext before is text here, for better or for worse. Not a bad idea, though maybe we could’ve had more fun in making these villains more pathetic.

15: Body (2015): If this isn’t a example of when to drop a toxic friend, I don’t know what is. It’s low because Christmas is only used to explain why the house is deserted.

14: Dead End: The most surreal family breakdown of all time

13: Silent Night (2012): Never saw the 1984 original. I know, how dare I?. Effective enough yule-themed slasher, I suppose.

12: Wind Chill: Kind of a Hitchcockian set up ambushed by a good old fashioned ghost story. Considering the holiday’s history, it’s sad there’s not more supernatural Christmas horror films like this these days. Bonus points for using carols as a plot point. I didn’t think they would keep tying it in once the characters were stuck. Also, another ACAB movie. Always good.

11: Christmas Bloody Christmas: first half is a realistic hang out between two friends. second half is the Terminator: Yuletide edition. Good kills, but it could’ve been even more messed up.

10: Santa’s Slay: Remember when they tried to make wrestlers into Slasher villains for a while? Kinda dull plot, but Bill Goldberg is at least fun and the kills are fun.

9: The Children: Little kids really can be the worst.

8: Rare Exports: Not my favorite killer Santa movie, but easily the most well-thought out.

7: A Christmas Horror Story: The stories are hit and miss, especially the endings. But yeah, the North Pole one is the best.

6: Deadly Games: While the premise is bonkers as presented, it also makes me a bit sad. This psychotic homeless man just wanted someone to play with if you think about it, but he’s clearly disturbed so people just keep passing him off until this happens. And that poor kid! Not only did he lose his dog, but he thinks he ruined Christmas at the end because he had to kill Santa! Though I think it proves my point where killer Santas are at their best either terrorizing kids or being helped by them.

5: Christmas Evil: The American Psycho of killer Santa movies. An early take that to the over-commercialization of Christmas and actually keeps the killer somewhat sympathetic even after he snaps and becomes homicidal. Side note, my theory on the ending is that he actually died.

4: Krampus: Christmas Vacation invaded by Gremlins! The amount of effort put in by this movie has spoiled me for all Christmas horror that has come after it. Michael Dougherty’s films need time to sink in for me. It didn’t help with the confusing ending. But even if it’s not the best Christmas Horror film, based on it’s look, themes, variety of killers, and Dickensian story beats, it might be the most Christmassy.

3: Scrooged: This counts just for A Christmas Carol in general, but I mention this one just on being the most effectively scary, even if I don’t buy Bill Murray as a changed man at the end quite. While it’s an old enough story to make fun of and pick apart, an effective enough modern update can remind us that it’s, at it’s heart, not just a ghost story, but a character breakdown and a psychological horror. Did I truly befriend or look up to people who would steer me wrong? Just because I do believed in the cynicism I am championing and subjecting to other people, is that not enough to make me righteous? Who am I really to the people in my life when I’m not in the room? And ultimately, If I don’t care, what’s the worst that could happen? It’s the essential Christmas story, because it’s about a simple thing; As long as you can act, it’s never too late. So before it looks like things are about to get worst: muster up a little courage, be willing to unlearn toxic habits, reach out to those you depend on, and of course, put a little love in your heart.

2: Black Christmas (1974); One of the original true Slasher movies. And still one of the creepiest. Also, definitely the kind of movie that were it released today would be called “woke”. (pro-abortion, male entitlement being a theme, etc.)

1: Gremlins: A stereotypical picturesque Christmas Movie setting invaded by the monstrous embodiment of the OG Winter Solstice holiday, Saturnalia (look it up). Works as a metaphor of the toll uncontrolled tourism can have on certain places, especially during the holidays. Plus, who doesn’t think Gizmo is cute?

That’s all the ones I can remember so hopefully that’s all of them. If I forgot one or I see a new one, I’ll do a follow-up saying where it would land on here. I might make a more in-depth post about my feelings for Christmas next week.

A little bit of both, no doubt. Reiner has a dorky sense of humor & Mikasa's odd humor makes for a good tension-breaking combination. Mikasa's the quiet one between the two and the loudest she'd ever been was just a deep, heavy whimper. Reiner's the louder one that sometimes Mikasa would have to smother him when they're having a quickie 🤣

Visiting Salem

A few years ago I traveled to Salem for Halloween week. It was a fun trip but not at all the quaint town I had expected. And it was busy. Salem eagerly leans into its witch history and new age spiritualism, sporting many psychic readings and occult shops. To be honest, a large part of my stay was spent walking, shopping, and eating so I didn’t get to visit as quite as many museums as I would have liked. I’ve included a brief review of some of the places I stopped in at while I was there:

Jolie Tea - this was tucked away from the Essex Street pedestrian mall, which made it the perfect place to escape the crowds and blustery wind. They had a selection of seasonal tea blends made in shop. I stopped in several times and took several pounds of tea back as a visiting gift for my aunt. I know it’s an odd compliment but I’m in love with their upholstery and the wallpaper in their restroom. Very limited seating (only 3 tables, one of which only seats two people), but quiet enough at the times I went as to not be a problem.

Count Orlok’s Nightmare Gallery - located on Essex street (the main thoroughfare, foot traffic only) this gallery houses memorabilia and trivia from classic and modern horror cinema. I recommend it if you fancy yourself a horror movie buff. Tickets were $9 for adults and did not need to be purchased in advance. The tour is self guided, walk in any time.

O'Neill’s Pub & Restaurant - honestly I popped in here just intending to use the facilities and get off my feet for a bit but they sell the best pumpkin ale I’ve had to date. The rim is dusted with cinnamon sugar and the head is dusted with a crescent moon of spice. I enthusiastically returned twice a day for the duration of the trip (I was on holiday after all). Their shepherd’s pie was quite good and the waitresses were happy to share insider advice on the best places to park, how to avoid traffic, etc.

Howard Street Cemetery - I visited this cemetery under the impression that the headstone for Giles Corey was there. It wasn’t. There was a memorial at one time but it was toppled by a vandal in 2015. Nevertheless it was a nice, quiet place to stop and take a breather from the crowds.

The Witch House - this is a bit of a misnomer as the house belonged to Jonathan Corwin, one of the judges of the trials. The house is the only structure left in the city that has direct ties to the trials and gives a much more authentic impression of daily life. The tour is self guided but there are volunteers stationed throughout ready to talk about particular items or history of the individuals that resided there. They have a limited capacity they’re required to stick to because of the house’s age so you may be in for a bit of a wait if you catch it during a busy hour. Tickets are about $10 for adults, sold in the gift shop.

Salem Witch Museum - They start the tour by seating visitors in a dark theatre. A recording plays, lighting up vignettes at scheduled points. These vignettes are maybe roughly 9 feet up from where you will be seated, not in sequential order, and cover a full 360° so swiveling your head up and around to find it is necessary. The recording and displays are rather dated; my guess is that they haven’t been changed since the museum’s founding in 1972 (to be honest I was rather expecting Vincent Prince to narrate). After this the group is lead into a small gallery with various placards and pop culture and news printouts. A guide will deliver a brief monologue and then you are free to view the gallery or filter into the gift shop.

I was rather perturbed that the museum spent effort linking hysteria of the Salem witch trials to McCarthyism (and any other time the American media described a thing as a “witch hunt”) but did not give but the briefest lip service to the misogyny that drove the witch trials and the selection of its victims. Anxiety about attacks from indigenous people were mentioned, but nothing of the political tension of territory and property lines, the disputes between Salem and its many pastors, or the institution of witchcraft as a prosecutable offense in a court of common law by King James. For a museum on the trials it was very light on the details. I found more information available in the gift shop’s surprisingly thorough selection of books. You do have to buy tickets ($21 adults) somewhat in advance for tours that rotate on (I think) 45 minute intervals.

Peabody Essex Museum - The Peabody Essex Museum is huge and hosts art and history exhibits. When I visited they had an exhibit on Qing Dynasty empresses and had just finished reconstructing brick by brick, tile by tile, a real Qing Dynasty ancestral home imported from Huizhou, China, Salem’s sister city. General admission is $20 for adults.

The Hocus Pocus House - The house used for the exterior of Max and Dani’s in the 1993 movie is a popular stop but it is quite a long walk away from the main tourist hub. I’m sure there are bus tours that would take you there, but like the spendthrift I am, I hoofed it. You can’t enter the house as it is a private residence so taking photos from across the street is the best you can get. The benefit of walking are the scenic views (at last! The quaint town I had imagined!) and meeting a neighbor a few doors down. She had fashioned a hedge from seashells and had delightful watchdog whose name escapes me, save that it was compound and started with “Sir.” I caught her outside gardening - or rather she caught me - and had a chat about the house, tourists, and living in Salem.

Witch City Mall - free multi-story parking! Get there early.

The Coven’s Cottage - Tools, ingredients, books, and more with an exclusive focus on Asatru.

HausWitch Home + Healing - prime example of the self-care industry meets new age spiritualism.

Artemisia Botanicals - Every powdered or raw ingredient you could likely hope for. I saw advertisements for their tea reading service but none was offered when I visited.

Hex Old World Witchery - a sister store to the one in New Orleans. It sells tools, spell ingredients, enchanted candles, jewelry, and some very jaunty pointed hats for ladies and gents.

Life Alive Organic Cafe - Organic vegan cafe. It has the Sanderson Sisters painted as vegetables on their window.

Opus - A fusion restaurant. The food was amazing and the service was great. They have live shows in their basement level. A perfect place for cocktails.

Adriatic Restaurant - Mediterranean and Italian fare. Decent, but pricey.

Caramel Pasteries & Macarons - Easily the best macarons in town. They also sell ice cream and a limited selection of coffee and tea.

The Satanic Temple Headquarters - Baphomet had just returned from his extended stay in Arkansas. The connected Salem Art Gallery and library was also open, and there were some rather striking vine and wicker sculpture work to greet you. And as expected, the people were quite friendly and helpful with recommendations for what else to do and see in Salem. The only downside is that it is a bit of a hike from downtown, but a much shorter one than the Hocus Pocus house. Self-guided tour is $15 for adults.

Street vendors - there are many of these out and about close to Halloween. You can buy whole bags (and whole bags only) of apple cider donuts and other goodies. Not something I normally go for but it was enjoyable. Bring cash.

Additional notes

There are loads of people in costume days before Halloween. If you are shyly deliberating on whether or not to pack a costume, you needn’t think on it further. Do it and have fun, my darling.

However, I should warn you that if you are one of those that plans to wave a movie replica wand at traffic while shouting bad Latin, I can assure you that you aren’t the first to attempt this and the drivers will not be patient with you. Better to hustle along.

Salem has a noise ordinance that goes into affect at 10 PM on Halloween night. According to the local waitresses most folks don't begin to trickle into town until 10 AM or so that day.

Essex street is cobbled, please wear comfortable shoes.

Shop around! There are many shops selling largely the same merchandise. By and large you'll see the same prices but if you've got a sharp enough eye you can save yourself a bit of cash.

Reserve your stay, wherever it is, AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. I reserved in January and still had to book a room 20 minutes away, which required a car rental.

Speaking of which, if you're driving in from outside Salem, the lanes merge and disappear frequently and it can be a little stressful. Most of the drive into Salem is single lane through neighborhoods - school bus traffic included.

The temperature in late October is mild but the wind chill coming off the sea makes it feel at least 10°F cooler. And it’s quite windy - wear your hair up. Preferably add a hat lest you show up on someone’s doorstep looking like Sadako, as I did.

FINAL RIDE of 2020

As 2020 is finally coming to an end, I took today off as it looked like it was supposed to be the warmest, dry day left of the year. Tomorrow, Christmas Eve is supposed to be warmer, but raining most of the day here in Virginia. With a high of 48 predicted, I got ready to take my likely final ride of 2020.

It was 36 degrees when I pulled the bike out of the shed. I thought that was going to be lowest temp of the day, but it was few degrees colder in the mountains where I was headed. I threw my heated gear in the saddle bags in case I needed it, but I was dressed for the cold in my Under Armor Heat Gear, Duluth Trading Co, lined Fire Hose pants, and my cold weather boots and socks. I put on my glove liners and my mid weight gloves as I wanted to test out both my new liners, and the hand guards I mounted on the bike. Throughout the 218 miles I got in, my hands did get a little chilled along the way, but I think the combo did the trick as they never got really cold. I never did put on any of my heated gear, even at 3,600 ft along Skyline Drive . . . Ahhh yes, Skyline Drive, let me tell you about my route.

I knew two things when I left the shed; 1) I wanted to ride on Skyline Drive, and 2) I wanted to put in around 200 miles for my final ride. I made my route up as I went, and I think I did pretty darn good. I headed out Pageland Drive and wiggled through the Manassas Battle Fields and up to Braddock Road before heading west towards US 15. I was on 15 for a short time, like 200 yards, before I turned off for more back roads of Carolina Dr and out towards Mountain Rd to Waterfall Drive.

Taking Waterfall, I saw the first signs of the recent snowfall, which had passed through late last week, but had melted by my house. Riding through the shadows of the shaded road, I eased through all the curves selecting what looked like the driest line through the curves. I did feel the bike slip a little on some icy patches, but avoided any sudden input on the controls and kept chugging along.

I got on 55 in The Plains and followed that through Marshall, before turning off to take Crest Hill Road out into Flint Hill before I picked up Fodderstack Road and rode through Little Washington and on into Sperryville. I was debating between stopping at the Griffin in Flint Hill and the Headmaster's Pub in Sperryville for lunch. Ultimately, I chose Sperryville as it put me about 15 miles closer to Skyline Drive and I would be freshly “warmed” up before hitting the mountains. I got into Sperryville just after noon, but the Pub was closed until 4:00 PM. I knew of another place in town that was pretty good, so decided to check that out, but it just had carryout - F U Covid! I figured I would find something down the road, and if not I can afford to miss a meal every now and then. I geared up and got ready to hit Skyline Drive.

Just before starting up the mountain, I saw a new restaurant that was open with indoor seating. God bless businesses like this that opened in spite of Covid. I parked the bike and headed inside to this new establishment that was quickly filling up. I ordered a BLT, Creamy Tomato soup, and a coffee. All of the above were Delicious, and just what I needed to warm me, and fill me for the rest of my journey. Sufficiently warmed and filled, I headed back out to my bike and rode 211 up the mountain to Skyline Drive.

Thank you U.S. Department of the Interior Secretary David Bernhardt! In November of this year he issued a directive that gave all veterans free access to the Department’s properties. Today that saved me the $25 motorcycle fee for Skyline Drive. Basically Mr. Secretary, you bought me lunch today, so thank you, Sir!

I knew as I headed up 211 that I made the right choice to come up and ride the Drive. It was absolutely beautiful. The mountains were still covered with snow, and the roads were lined by mostly undisturbed snow. I saw a few deer along the way and also a couple of snowmen that people had made in some of the pull offs. The air was crisp (in the lower 30′s) and clear and the views were spectacular. Yes I made the right choice. If this truly is the last ride of the year, it is a good one.

I stayed on the Drive to Route 33 and rode into Standardsville, then Madison before heading up US 29 towards home. Once down from the mountains, it warmed up to the mid to upper 40′s as promised and I rode in comfort thanks to my gear and my new hand guards.

Putting the bike away, I logged 218 miles for the day, bringing my yearly total to 8,018 miles. After a very slow start, I was able to catch up and pass my goal of 7,500 miles. This total brings me and my 2011 Kawasaki Voyager 1700 ABS to a grand total of 91,226 miles. She will turn 10 next year. Next July will mark 10 years that we have been together. My goal has always been to ride 100,000 miles on her in 10 years. That means I have my work cut out for myself next year . . . Fortunately, I also have a plan . .. .

Austin’s spoiler free ND Rankings from best to worst (with reasons why)

PLS NOTE: There is only one game I actually HATE. Every other game there is something I like about it except my last spot. Keep that in mind.

1) Ghost of Thornton Hall. This game is an absolute masterpiece. It is the best game HeR has made since CUR. It is also the best game I think HeR has put out in recent years. These are characters that you actually FEEL for. Not one of them are unlikeable. The closest you get is Clara, who you wind up feeling for in the end. An absolute work of art (it is also the first game I pre-ordered because from the very beginning I was invested.)

2) Labyrinth Of Lies- Hear me out. I absolutely adore this game. It has Greece, Theatre, and Xenia Doukas. Three things I cannot live without. While I absolutely agree that the whole idea of a rotating set system underground is impossible, this game was a dream come true for theatre kids everywhere. I will never not play this game without listening to Mamma Mia. It’s probably my biggest unpopular opinion of this fandom.

3) Last Train To Blue Moon Canyon- This game breaks my literal heart. Camille and Jake Hurly has always been up there in my eyes with Frances and Dirk from SHA. I have always loved the environment of this game. (This is probably due to the fact that Murder On The Orient Express is one of my favorite books) and this is one game that I always go to when I’m feeling nostalgic. It is also the first time you see the Hardy Boys so that’s a sign.

4) Sea Of Darkness- This is the game that I think has the best graphics HeR has offered. We have a lesbian character which was highly requested as well as a cute dog. The aurora borealis is never not STUNNING to look at and it one of the best games that actually feels like Nancy is “there”. The mystery is also one that I think can be misleading. I always assumed it was Ghost Ship TM but boy was I wrong. Elisabet also has my whole heart.

5) The Final Scene- OH MY GOD THIS IS AN ABSOLUTE SASS FILLED GAME AND I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN HERE FOR IT. I constantly say “I propose you back off!” at every opportune moment. It is the best dialogue Nancy has ever had. Again, it is a Stan for theatre kids everywhere. I have also always thought magic was the coolest thing even though I can't perform it. Solid dialogue and very easy puzzles, which is always a relief.

6) Curse Of Blackmoor Manor- This is not in my top 3 as it is going to be for almost everyone else due to the fact that I think it is a very difficult game. I first played it when I was 12, and it was the only game I could not beat up until that shit show SAW which we will discuss later. Now that I've grown older and wiser, I have really grown to appreciate it more and it is a CLASSIC when looking into this game series. I appreciate the nostalgia value it has and the soundtrack and the characters. Ethel Bossiny FTW. This game also has the best soundtrack of the series.

7) Treasure In The Royal Tower- Another one that will be in everyone else’s top 3 but is not for me, but is still solid. I ADORE this game’s setting and character development- but for me, I never really felt pulled in to the mystery. My time was spent fan grilling over Hotchkiss that the person who broke into the library was on my back burner. HOWEVER, it is still very nostalgic and iconic it is in my top 10.

8) The Phantom Of Venice- Simply put, this game is why I want to go to Italy. I was ALMOST THERE but corona. I absolutely adore the way this game transports you. They included everything they could, even real photos of Venice, which I appreciated as someone who wants to go.

9) Alibi in Ashes- You have to understand how important it is that we finally got a game in River Heights. It was always on the TOP of my list in terms of places I wanted Nancy to go. It did not disappoint. The fact that everyone turned on Nancy so quickly always sends chills down my spine.

10) Legend Of The Crystal Skull- ALRIGHT so another unpopular opinion. This was the FIRST game I every played AND BEAT and so it will always be in my top 10. This is the game that truly got me invested in the series. If it wasn't this, it would not be this high, but it is my number 10 for that reason. Other things I like: Henry, Renee, the setting and music.

11) Warnings At Waverly Academy- WAC’s setting is so amazing. I don’t really know how to explain it, but I have always been intrigued about boarding school mysteries (@ house of Anubis )and this is a solid one. It contains probably one of the best plot twists of the series that blew my mind the first time I played it, and Mel Corbalis is god’s gift to humanity.

12) The Silent Spy- A real tearjerker if there ever was one. This games takes a storyline that has been changed many times (Nancy’s mom) and turns it into something so extremely badass you really wish she wasn't actually dead. Zoe Wolfe is the absolute reason I exist. You also play a cookies mini game which is just about as addicting as crack.

13) Secret Of The Old Clock- Okay, so I feel like this game gets a lot of hate because everyone talks about how weird the time travel is, but this has always been a game I liked. I think personally, that it is the easiest game in the series (if you exclude the dress, which I have never had a problem with) and it is based on the absolute most classic ND story of all. I also highly enjoy this period of time, even though the characters in this game aren't great. Emily Crandall is probably the best one, and even she yells at Nancy.

14) Secret Of Shadow Ranch- Okay. So I’m going to get anon h8 for this. But SHA is... not the best in my opinion. I have talked about this before, but SHA is very tedious in terms of chores and I just do not like that. I wouldn't necessarily mind the chores if they weren't repetitive, but it is the same chores over and over again. With that said, I LOVE the music, the Humber storyline, and the setting, so it is #14

15) Message In A Haunted Mansion- This is probably the only game I have ever pissed my pants over. CUR and GTH didn’t even do that. I think it is bc MHM is one of the first games I played. The hauntings in this game are so AMAZING and when you find out their explanation it totally changes things.

16) The Deadly Device- I love when ND does a Murder Mystery right. This is the time it was done right. The culprit came out of absolutely no where and I loved it. It is ranked this low for me b/c I think some of the puzzles are tedious and hard. Ryan Kilpatrick is an amazing human being and so is Ellie thx.

17) Tomb Of The Lost Queen- Another game which I think gets a lot of undeserved hate. Mummies are badass, especially when the mummy sighting is real and unexplained. Dylan Carter is probably the biggest example of stud you will ever see, and Jamila El-Dine is a bad b****. I am ranking it this high for Jamila alone.

18) Danger On Deception Island- I absolutely adore this game’s music. But I hate Holt Scotto with all the fire within me. He is why this game is not in my top 10. I love everything about this game except Holt F****** Scotto. I want to put it in my top 10. I do. But Holt Scotto sucks.

19) The Haunted Carousel- This was a game which I vividly remember being bullied in daycare over. I took it to daycare one day and we kept getting our eyeballs poked out by the lathe. Daycare memories suck. Also it is the first game by which we get a literal sexual strut by the culprit at the end, which I have never liked. Pluses of the game? An amusement park. Miles.

20) Ransom Of The Seven Ships- SAY IT OUT LOUD. RAN. IS. NOT. THE. WORST. GAME. The puzzles, although always thrown at your face, are actually sort of fun. I would rank it higher but there is way too few characters in a way that makes the culprit very obvious, but it also isn't at the same time.

21) The Captive Curse- This is a game by which I thought had so much potential but I think the monster looks very dumb? It’s like? The inbred cousin of Frankenstien’s monster? However, I LOVE THE SONG “girls”from this game and have a huge love for Lukas, so it isn't bottom 10

22) Stay Tuned For Danger- This game is one that would be so much higher up for me, If you didn’t have to look at EVERYTHING to complete it. If you miss ONE LETTER in a magazine, you cannot beat this game. I get stuck on it every time I play it, but the mystery is amazing and who doesn’t love a good old NYC game.

23) The White Wolf Of Icicle Creek- To begin my bottom 10, ICE. I LOVE ICE as a concept. But, Fox and Geese holds me back from a replay. I absolutely love the idea of a lodge that people are in danger at. The snow atmosphere is amazing and so is Isis. But, Fox and Geese is an abomination.

24) Ghost Dogs Of Moon Lake- I really, really want to like this game because I am a dog lover. However, the insect challenge is such a CHORE to do. I cannot stand to do it. It is so difficult to do in my humble opinion, it requires such a retrace of step that makes it insufferable. Pros? cute doges.

25) The Haunting Of Castle Malloy- YOU ARE LITERALLY THIS LOW BC OF THE END PUZZLE AND YOU KNOW IT. However, not the worst for me because I love Ireland and this game has some of the best music in the series. It is on my top 5 for soundtracks. I love everything about this game except THE END. Fiona is so misunderstood.

26) Secret of The Scarlet Hand- I really like this game, I do, but I am very not interested in the constant phone calls you do in this game. You are on the phone for about 75% of this game and I really didn’t like that about it. LOVE the history behind it though.

27) SCK/SCK2- I really do not like SCK as a concept. School murders are a topic which really turns me off. Not to mention, there is barely a difference between these games but a single character and a puzzle.

28) Danger By Design- Paris? Yes. Fashion? Heck yeah. But I never have really enjoyed DAN because the mystery can literally be solved by pulling a Phantom of The Opera and dropkicking the mask off. I also HATE the cookie puzzle. The edges never curl upwards for me.

29) Creature Of Kapu Cave- Ugh. Shells and fishing make this game untouchable for me. I LOVE HAWAII CONCEPT and supernatural volcanoes and phenomena. But I cannot stand the big island buck system or the man himself. Sorry, big island homies. Also be proud of me because it took me this long to bring up STUPID FRASS

30) Midnight In Salem- I was so excited for this game. We all were. I really enjoy MID’s mystery and as a concept. But, the new format is not good and neither is the constant talking and only being able to complete the game in one order. I was so excited for nothing (which is my own fault)

31) Shadow At The Waters Edge- GOD. The massive nonogram and sudoko have NO place in this game. I refuse to play it because of these 2 puzzles. However, I do love the scares in it. They are top notch scares. I have beat this game in it’s entirety maybe once?

32) Trail Of The Twister- Internship simulator forever. Chores galore, what a bore. Uncompelling mystery and hateful characters. The only thing I liked was the country music, a sentence you don’t hear often.

33) The Shattered Medallion- I literally played the beta of this game and it was ions better than the actual released product. That’s reason enough.

Hey everyone, uhh so I have some tea for you all.

So I met this guy (I’ll refer to him as J) during the last meeting of the quarter for the graphic design club last fall. Here’s everything that happened between December 5 through February 22.

December 5

Honestly, I haven’t noticed J at any of the previous meetings, but that one night, he just came up to me out of the blue and complimented me on my cozy winter gear.

So J and I happened to be taking Intro to Design that quarter and we talked about our group projects for the class, which we just turned in earlier that day (I had just pulled two consecutive all-nighters and had just taken a 3-hour nap prior to the meeting, so I was very sleep deprived at this point). We continued our conversation while walking down some stairs and outside the building, and he asked me about other clubs that I’m involved in, to which I told him that I’m the secretary and Head of Hufflepuff for the Harry Potter Alliance (HPA) and that I’m also in the ballroom dance club. He seemed very interested in HPA. He mentioned that he played second violin in the video game orchestra (VGO) and that they were having a quarterly concert that weekend. A friend in HPA had promoed the VGO concert the night before, but I wasn’t really interested, as I had no knowledge of video game music. J and I exchanged Instagram handles and later that night, I answered all of his questions about HPA. Then on Sunday, sort of at the last minute, I found out that a few friends from HPA were going to the VGO concert and I went along because $5 for a concert is not bad, and I haven’t been to an orchestra performance in a while. The concert was so much better than I expected!

December 9

Finals week just started and J randomly asked if I was studying on campus 👀

December 11

We met up at a boba shop near my apartment to study for the Intro to Design final (it was raining pretty hard and J refused to have me bike out to campus in the rain). We studied off a Quizlet set for about 3 hours until my laptop’s battery was running low, and then we talked for another couple hours! It turns out we have a lot in common! We’re both only children, 22 years old, left-handed, design majors (J is actually a design and managerial economics double major), and we play the violin (I used to play violin and cello, but I digress). Oh and we both have an iNTeResTinG injury story haha. Then, before we went our separate ways, he gave me a one-armed hug, which I couldn’t reciprocate because I had my arms full with a cup of boba and my umbrella.

December 12

J DM’ed me out of the blue asking for my Spotify wrapped up. I normally don’t give in to trends easily, and this was something I wasn’t really interested in sharing with the entire world, but I shared it with him anyways (Spoiler: It’s mostly Game of Thrones soundtracks, Taylor Swift, and BTS). Despite being an orchestra nerd, I find it really difficult keeping up with popular music, and my musical taste stays fairly consistent even several years later. I was kind of expecting him to laugh at my musical taste, but he actually complimented me for liking dramatic tv/film soundtracks. And then we arranged another study session right before the design final.

December 13

The Intro to Design final was supposed to be 50 questions, all multiple-choice, no trick questions. It was supposed to be really easy, and I thought we got almost everything down at the previous study session. So why were we having another study session right before the exam? I thought either he really wanted an A in the class, or he wanted to see me again before we went on winter break. Right before going in for the exam, he asked if I wanted to meet up again for a “post-final celebration” when we were done with the exam. Okay, now I was really starting to think he wanted to spend some more time with me before winter break 👀

So after the design final, we walked down to one of two boba shops on the edge of campus and downtown. We both ordered our drinks, he got some popcorn chicken, and we talked for four hours! I can’t remember everything we talked about, but time really flew by. And then, before we went home, he gave me a one-armed hug again.

December 14

I had plans to fly home to LA today. I had spent the previous night cleaning my apartment and packing stuff (I managed to forget to bring a pair of sneakers because, for some reason, dumbass me decided to wear heeled boots to the airport because ~fashion~). I was sitting in the airport, about to board the plane, when I got a message from J. He remembered that I was flying that day and was asking if I got home safely. Aww he actually cares. I told him that I would be boarding soon and will be offline for the next couple hours. And then I updated him when I got off the plane, when my parents picked me up at LAX, while we sat in the typical LA traffic, until we all made it home.

December 15 - January 5

Over the next few weeks of winter break, we messaged each other a couple times every day. We shared pictures of the holiday decorations in our home, and I shared pictures and video clips of my pet bunny too. On Chistmas Eve, he asked if I had any plans, to which I told him we were going out for dinner to celebrate my mom’s birthday. He wished my mom happy birthday and I passed the birthday wishes to my mom. “Hey mom, my friend says happy birthday.” “Thank you — who???” And I had to tell my mom about J (whoops). Her judgmental ass was not exactly happy to hear that J is a Caucasian dude from yeehaw country, and after showing her J’s Instagram feed, she was not a fan of his art style smh. Anyways, the day I was coming back to Davis, J was like AHHHH you’re back!!!!!!! Just pure excitement 💖

January 9 - 16

We met up at yet another boba shop after the first week of classes. Our meeting was shorter than all our previous meetings, because I had to bike back to give an apartment tour later that afternoon. Two weeks into the winter quarter, we met after our design studio classes and walked to an HPA meeting together. We also went to a graphic design club meeting together, after which he offered to drive me home so that I wouldn’t have to bike with the cold wind on my face. I trusted J at this point, so I gratefully accepted. I think my trust in him went up at least 10 times in this moment, because J managed to secure my small and heavy bike to the bike rack on the back of his car, which already had his bike strapped in. After dropping me off at my apartment, he invited me out for dinner that weekend (it was also MLK weekend).

January 18

J picked me up at 7. The restaurant he chose was hella ~ f a n c y ~. It was an Italian restaurant downtown with dim lighting and pasta priced at $13 - $16. He said he didn’t know the place would be that fancy and that he trusted Yelp’s description of “casual Italian.” I told a friend about our sort-of-date night and she thinks J picked a date-y restaurant on purpose 👀 Oh and my mom went the extra mile of writing down J’s name, the place we were going to, and I was to call home at 10 PM (I ended up getting back and called an hour early).

February 14 - Valentine’s Day ❤️

Unfortunately, J never came to another HPA meeting because the campus radio station, KDVS, holds meetings at the same time, and he’s trying to get a job with them. And we don’t really see each other very often because design classes are usually 3-hours long and J is really busy with 5 classes. But J has been super excited about Yule Ball ever since he met me. J came over while I was tabling for ticket sales. He mentioned that VGO was going to see Sonic that night, and invited me to hang with VGO. Let me tell you, it was quite an experience and definitely not the typical Valentine’s Day date.

We pulled into a Sonic drive-in for dinner (because gotta get in that Sonic mood lol). A girl introduced herself as D (name altered to protect identity, of course). She clearly has some sort of leadership role in the group because everyone pays attention to her, but she constantly makes jokes about being everyone’s daddy. The jokes are so vulgar and obscene. It was like weirdest video game nerd and band kid hybrid (J later tells me she’s a violinist. What?! Orchestra people are usually super chill lol). After dinner, we get in our cars and head down the street to the movie theater. The VGO had reserved seats in Row J. J and I had just booked our tickets several hours earlier and we were in Row F. Throughout the movie, someone in the theater yelled at every pivotal moment (including, yes, that Tails reveal in the post credits). J thoroughly enjoyed the movie and laughed along with whomever was yelling behind us, while I knew absolutely nothing going into it, except that Sonic is a blue hedgehog that can run super fast. J also gave one additional bit of info before the movie: Sonic really likes chili corn dogs for some strange reason???

So that’s how my Valentine’s Day went lol

February 18

J came by around 3 in the afternoon, right before we were going to pack up for the day, and purchased a Yule Ball ticket. He’s obviously very excited to go to Yule Ball with me but he says he doesn’t know how to dance. I told him we have a waltz lesson planned. He’s like aww and says he wants me to personally teach him (my heart 💕). And as always, he gave me a hug before leaving to go to class. Recently, I noticed that J has been giving full hugs instead of his usual one-armed hugs, though it depends on the situation.

February 22

✨❄️ Y u l e B a l l ❄️✨

J and I arrived separately at Yule Ball because I had to help set up the venue for the event and I had spent the entire day working on an Azkaban wanted poster prop and literally finished it two hours before our meeting time for setting up the venue. The dance was supposed to start at 7 PM and J got there early enough to help me out with last-minute decorations. I had signed up to be in charge of the photobooth from 7 to 7:30, but no one came for pictures during that 30-minute period, so I was free for the rest of the night. J and I had a fantastic time admiring the detailwork in the decorations around the venue and laughing and dancing to the weird selection of 2000s music. J did pretty okay with learning waltz basics and I gave him tips here and there on standing in closed frame, balance, the slight tension in the left hand, etc.

Sometime towards the end of the night, my ballroom friend pulled me aside for a bathroom chat and asked if we’re dating. I don’t know??? We haven’t decided to call it official so ??

After helping clean up everything at the end of the night, J dropped off a friend and right before turning to drop me off (I live across the street from that friend), he remembered that I hadn’t had actual food all day prior to Yule Ball (aww he actually cares, and he probably wanted some extra time with me even though my apartment was right there). So we went downtown for (a very late) dinner. While we chatted over food and boba, our conversation drifted towards soundtrack music and I mentioned The Theory of Everything soundtrack, my favorite soundtrack besides Game of Thrones. J immediately searched up The Theory of Everything soundtrack album and streamed it on the way home (that’s some serious dedication right there), and he liked it!

Oh and I forgot to mention that J forgot to bring a jacket and I had a very warm scarf and coat, so we held onto each other with a one-armed hug while we walked to his car. I really love his hugs, one-armed or full hugs.

I usually post a picture from Yule Ball every year so here’s this year’s! Yep, that’s J. And we’re both Ravenclaws :)

Taemin is just next-level. Minwoo from Shiinhwa is also as impossible to look away from today as he was 20 years ago. N has a style all his own.

I also am bad at censoring my face, and I also love singing, and I also love food.

I mean, if you’re kind, that’s all you need at the end of the day. Physically I think long hair is really beautiful, especially when dancing.

"NOYA!" I ran to my cousin as I stepped foot in the gym.

"Y/n!"

"Y/n-Chan." I felt other people join our hug, making me laugh, I pulled away laughing.

"Dad-chi! Suga-mama!" They laughed and shook their heads, I smiled at the young couple. "I missed y'all."

"We missed you too kid, hey.." He leaned closer and whispered. "Noya told us, you're sick, are you okay?"

"I'll be fine." He nodded backing up only for Suga to envelope me in a hug, patting my head.

"Keep fighting, you strong girl!" I laughed and nodded my head in his chest.

"Yes, Suga-mama."

"I want a hug too, Y/n!" I pulled and shook my head ruffling up Tanaka's hair.

"Sorry, but no Tan-perv." The old group laughed at my words.

"Oi, King." I looked over at Oikawa and another guy.

"How are you today, Y/n? You're birthday's tomorrow!" I nodded smiling, I can't believe Daichi remembered.

"I'm fine, and it is. F/n is taking me shopping."

"F/n? She's here?" I pointed to the girl trying to cool the tension between Oikawa and the other guy.

"F/n!" They all ran over hugging the poor girl, I sweat dropped walking over to Iwa, who was next to the other boy.

"Poor, F/n.."

"For real." We looked at each other before laughing.

"You can laugh!?" We stopped as an orange-haired boy ran over.

"Why do you people think you don't have a soul Iwa?" He shrugged his shoulders.

"Don't ask me." I nudged him laughing slightly.

"Probably by the way you treat Oik."

"Are you Iwaizumi's girlfriend?" I looked at the boy again, this time Noya ran over.

"You didn't say y'all were dating!"

"Chill, Noya, you'd be the first to know."

"Oh, right. Y/n, this is our first years, Hinata." Orange-haired boy. "Kageyama." One that doesn't like Oikawa. "Tsukishima." Tall dino. "and Yamaguchi." Cutie.

"Nice to meet y'all. I'm Noya's cousin." They looked at me then Noya. "This is my best friend, F/n!" She waved staying by Oik. "Baby carriage," I mumbled but they heard me, Iwa laughed, putting his arm over my shoulder before whispering.

"I give it till my birthday."

"When's that?"

"The 10th."

"Hm.. I give it till.. about a day or two." I whispered back.

"Deal." He held out his other hand, I shook it nodding.

"Deal."

"Quit betting on us!" We laughed at the two.

"Let's get settled." Me and F/n walked over to Ki, sitting next to her as they begin.

"Hey, Ki."

"Hey.”

"Hi, Ki-Chan!" She smiled at F/n and hugged us.

"How are you? Noya told us-"

"I'll be fine."

"Y/n’s a fighter," F/n informed her.

"She is. So, didn't know you were close to Iwaizumi.." She turned to look at F/n who was on her other side. "and Oikawa." She blushed and looked down, I laughed taking out my camera.

"He's my next victim." I showed her the pictures.

"What's this?" I looked at it.. it's me? The first one is when we were on the roof and I was enjoying the wind, the second was when we were in class, today. When did he?

"Iwaizumi..."

"You look beautiful." I smiled and looked at them, I do.

"So free."

"He's really good."

"He's also a good dancer." I blurted out, my eyes widen, and heat raised up to my cheeks.

"Y'all danced? When?"

"Uh, the park. I asked for music."

"What song?"

"Dynamite-Taio Cruz."

"Ou, lose music."

"Eh, didn't feel like slow dancing." We all giggled, I looked at the pictures Iwa took, he really is good.

"Y/n, look." I looked up in time to see Iwa spiking the ball, yes! No, we watched in shock as Hinata strikes the ball over the net. Eyes closed, what the? This went on, in the end... we lost. I saw Iwaizumi slouched over, I walked over and jumped on his back.

"You did well."

"We lost."

"True, but you'll get them next time. You have to fall in order to grow, Iwa. It's one lost to a lot of wins." I kissed his cheek and got off his back. "Now. Give me a hug." He chuckled and looked down.

"I'm sweat-" I know what he was going to say, but I hugged him anyway, I wrapped my arms over his shoulders.

"You did good, Iwa!" He wrapped his arms around me spinning me.

"Thank you." I laughed and pulled away ruffling his perfect hair, smiling.

"No problem.. that's why I'm here." He smiled patting my head, I looked at Karasuno and the rest of the team looking at us. "You guys did well too!" They smiled and nodded their heads.

"I should shower."

"Yeah, you should, you smell." He gave me a look, but we laughed.

"I can't smell worse than Shittykawa." We laughed more.

"Iwa-Chan!" I watched as they left to shower, Iwa hitting him in the back of the head.

"You like him." I jumped and looked at Ki, then looked at where the boys left.

"So? Can't be as bad as F/n liking Oikawa."

"Y/n-Chan!" I laughed as she pouted.

"You've been hanging around Oikawa too much."

"You're still gonna do the photoshoot today?"

"I have an idea!" I held up a finger. "I'll do it here."

"Hm, sounds good to me."

"Do what here?" We turned around to see the boys.

"You're shot."

"You still do that?" I nodded, we were about to walk out but Iwa pulled me back.

"It's raining." Huh? I looked and saw it was, when did it start? Ou.

"I got it! I need an umbrella!" I turned around only to burying my head in Iwa's chest.

"Here!" I backed away and grabbed it handing it to Iwa.

"What's this for?"

"Your shoot, silly." He looked at me funny but I pushed him out the door, with the umbrella open of course. He sighed before walking where I told him to.

"Now, look off to your right." He sighed but did as told. "And have the umbrella slightly more up."

"Like this?" I smile and nodded my head.

"Perfect."

1. Nickname

I tend to just respond to whatever people yell in my direction, so I go by Reagan and Morgan semi-frequently. I also love the really friggen weird ones that have nothing to do with my actual name, like Crystal, Storm and Ms. Albright. (Mr. Albright was a teacher that recently retired, and as far as I’m aware, did not have a wife or children). I also respond to “hey you,” “NERD,” “lady,” etc, and went by Dragon when I had my old username.

INFP HELL YEAH. However, I’m only like... 3% more introverted than extroverted. I can do both and it is extremely helpful.

5. Favorite features

I’m assuming physical features, so my hair and skin tone. I’m white AF with friggen anime-length brown hair. Seriously, my hair is loooong. I colored it a few months ago to give it a reddish undertone and darken it a few shades. (I can also wear anything except white or flesh tones, which is nice)

6. Favorite color

Red and gray! Red is so powerful and symbolic, blood and love and rage, etc, while gray is subtle and you can do so, so much with it. I love the sheer amount of color on overcast days, all the different blue-grays in the clouds. It’s only dreary if you don’t know what to look for.

7. Favorite animal

Uhhhhhh. Hard to pick? Tossup between cuttlefish, elephant and giraffe, leaning towards cuttlefish. Soft genius bois.

8. Average hours spent sleeping

At current work or at college, 6-8 hours. When on vacation, 8-10. I get kinda lethargic on vacations. I don’t like it.

9. Dogs or cats

Dogs are superior work animals, cats make better pets. They’re better at entertaining themselves when I’m busy.

10. Morning or evening person?

Hard to say? I think I define this differently than most people. I consider “morning people” people that can function right out of bed - they don’t need an hour to “wake up,” and I fall in that category. Once I’m up, I’m up and moving (makes me great for jobs where I’m on-call during sleeping hours - like my current job). However, I vastly prefer being awake later in the day and I hit a second wind at night without fail.

11. Dream trip?

Piranha fishing in the Amazon, checkin’ out bugs and fungi in Australia, or fishing in Alaska.

12. Dream job?

Something meaningful? I’m trying to get in with a prison ministry organization stationed around here, though apparently I love kids? I honestly didn’t expect that? This camp counselor thing is great. ANYWAY. I want something where I make a difference to people, ideally working with individuals, and maybe where my science background is relevant. (OH I LOVE COOKING - I also really want to open a candy shop. Currently working on that with my mother.)

13. When did you make this account?

Uh. Dunno? Sometime? And like unexpected-profundity said, I have no issue with people digging all the way back into my posts. I don’t think that’s creepy at all. This is an archive of things I choose to share, not my diary.

14. How many followers do you have?

HOLY POOP WHEN DID I GET 49?! Uhhhh hi and thanks. I also have an askblog for my original story @askwordsworthconsolas but I have done literally nothing with it yet. Gonna reblog all the oc asks I do over there eventually. Someday.

15. How many pets do you have?

My dad has a dog, I have a cat and five chickens, as well as innumerable fish in our koi pond/self-sustaining ecosystem thing. When I live somewhere that allows pets, I get random toads or lizards from the wild, let them chill out in my terrarium for a week until I get bored of them, then return them to the wild. I hatched some eggs from an anole once.

16. Best place to visit in your country?

I highly recommend the Great Lakes, specifically Lake Huron. Beautiful, dangerous expanse of water, lots of fish.

17. Favorite ice cream flavor?

Vanilla tbh. I really, really like vanilla everything.

18. How often do you read?

Haaaaaaa I feel called out. When I was younger and had more free time and less things that I wanted to actively learn, I read all the friggen time. 4-6 hours a day. Now... not so much. I like writing better?

19. Favorite study locations

Somewhere quiet and away from others. I can NOT study in a group. I typically end up in my room.

20. Favorite book series?

Young Wizards series by Diane Duane. Very nuanced for a young adult series, lots of mature concepts without making things too grim dark and cynical. Actually, it’s not cynical at all. It’s all about persevering in the face of inevitable loss because every person, every second is WORTH IT. (I’m also like 99% sure there’s a lot of Christian subtext in it, with the forgiveness and the love and the redemption arcs of so many people.) But! It’s not, like, super glaring. I like it because it resonates with me, but it’s not obvious.

How Winter Freeze Shut Down ERCOT

Hard winter weather just doesn’t happen in Texas? Not anymore. Find out how a winter cold snap froze up ERCOT and shut it down cold.

How Did Cold Weather Freeze The Texas Grid?

With Arctic-like cold and wind chills likely sticking around Texas until the weekend, many electricity customers inn ERCOT are finding time to wonder what happened on Sunday, February 15. After all, the past week’s cold weather catastrophe seems more at home in the bleak whiteness of Jack London’s Yukon than sunny Sugar Land. To help sort it all out, we’ve been assembling the story as the facts emerge. And as with any raw crisis, we’ve discovered a whole lot of questions to answer. Just how did a winter cold snap freeze up the ERCOT grid anyway? How could it affect your electric bill? And — more importantly — could it happen again?

How the Arctic Vortex and Winter Storm Froze Texas

Each winter, cold air over the North Pole forms a vortex that spins cold air around the northern region. Last year, a normal low pressure kept the Arctic Vortex bound up nice and tight over the North Pole. But this winter, high pressure over the Pole sloshed the Arctic Vortex across the northern hemisphere. In early January, the Arctic vortex underwent a “Sudden Stratospheric Warming” event that broke up the vortex and sent smaller daughter vortices whirling across the northern hemisphere.

As Ground Hog day dawned, One of those vortices flowed into an atmospheric trough over the middle of the U.S. This trough led far south deep into the heart of Texas. Bitter cold temperatures flowed southward. On February 11, ERCOT warned to expect “record electric use as a result of the extreme cold temperatures that have already reached much of the ERCOT region”.

Within two days, a storm system developed in the Pacific northwest. Strengthening as it moved east, it veered to Texas, changing into snow and ice. For the first time on record, the National Weather Service issued Winter Storm Warnings for all 254 counties in the state. As a result, the Railroad Commission of Texas issued an emergency order to protect residential customers by prioritizing deliveries of gas to electric generation facilities.

Texas Generation Mix

According to ERCOT, its Texas generation supply is roughly 22% coal, 35% combined cycle natural gas, 12% nuclear plants, and 25% wind. ERCOT’s annual winter forecast planned for 67,200 MW of coal, natural gas, and nuclear, 24,962 MW of wind, and about 3,800 from solar.

But as Texas temperatures plummeted and customer demand for electricity to heat homes rose and rose. That afternoon, ERCOT formally requested the U.S. Department of Energy to authorize all its generating units to run full blast. The request named 99 coal, natural gas, and fuel oil burning plants. That means that the fuel mix the night of February 14 favored about 67,000 MW from “thermal generators”; natural gas, coal, nuclear, and oil.

Thermal generators use heat to make steam and spin up a turbine that generates electricity. So, it’s a little ironic that thermal plants are susceptible to freezing because many of these plants have exposed steam pipes and switching systems. That’s when ice forms in the pipeline and blocks the flow. For Texas natural gas fueled generating stations, these freeze offs shut them down hard.

Natural gas power plants deliver plenty cheap energy to Texas electricity users. But only when the gas actually gets to them.

What Started The Electric Outages?

During the night of Sunday, February 14, winter peak-demand in ERCOT hit a record of 69,150 MW. Beginning around 11 pm multiple generation stations rapidly tripped offline due to the effects of brutal cold weather. Outages from coal and natural gas plants were at least 10,000 MW over what ERCOT planned for it worst-case scenario.

At that point ERCOT asked TDUs to shed 16,500 MW of load or about 2 million homes worth of electricity. Why Did ERCOT Just Black Out?

On Monday, February 16, nighttime weather conditions deteriorated further. ERCOT scrambled to find working generators and balance their system. By 4 PM, ERCOT had managed to restore approximately 2,500 MW of load. But with temperatures falling into teens that night, ERCOT requested another 18,500 MW of load to be shed. By Tuesday, about 45,000 MW and over 180 generators had gone offline.

ERCOT and the TDUs scrambled for generation as it became available. But at the same time supply had to balance load to keep the grid stable. On Tuesday afternoon, CenterPoint warned Houston residentsto prepare for power outages as generators continued to struggle. Even the South Texas Nuclear Power Station shut down about 1450 MW when cold weather affected its feedwater system.

The Big Texas Freeze Problem Spreads North

Shortages from natural gas freeze offs didn’t end at the the “Welcome to Texas” sign. Texas is top producer of natural gas in the U.S. Its wells supply gas used for heating in northern states via major pipeline networks. Nearly half of the state’s natural gas production has screeched to a halt as wells in the Permian Basin, Eagle Ford, and other gas fields froze off.

Monday gas supplies to northern states faltered. Some 17 States, some seeing temperatures below -25°F and as far north as Iowa, Nebraska, Minnesota, and the Dakotas were hit with energy shortages that included low natural gas supply for heating and rolling black outs. Consequently, this big Texas Freeze isn’t just a Texas problem. It’s a national one.

When Will My Lights Come On?

As of Friday, February 19, ERCOT had cancelled the emergency and is reporting “normal” conditions. Prices have slid to their normal levels. Much of that was due to the PUCT ordering ERCOT that energy prices should reflect scarcity of the supply. Companies offering customers wholesale rates, like Griddy, told customers that they should switch to another provideras soon as possible or face insanely high bills. Other providers offered customers $100 rebates and waived cancellation fees as incentives to switch to another provider.

The PUCT kept that rule in place until ERCOT finally cancelled the rolling black out emergency on Friday, February 19 at 9 AM. But during that time, ERCOT demanded that retailers needed to cough up cash for collateral for the Day Ahead Markets. Though big Texas energy companies like NRG and Vistra dig into their deep pockets to pay billions this week, small companies are scrambling to pay millions in collateral charges – in one case up to $6.5MM for less than 4,000 residential customers.

As a result, REPs could be bushwhacked by financial troubles as their bills come due. That means customers should keep a weather-eye peeled for some companies raising electricity rates or changing ownership. One retailer has already formally asked the PUCT to re-price rates during the emergency period to a cap of no more $1,500 per megawatt hour for energy. It is not know as of this writing how the PUCT will react.

Will This Happen Again?

Arctic vortex visits are not new to North America. Take for example the winter of 2013 to 2014 which brought record cold to normally sultry Georgia and Florida. As then ERCOT Chief Tripp Doggett explained to the Dallas News covering the event, “Things that you would expect to winterize prior to a cold period are the problems. In a lot of cases, I suspect, they were wrapped in insulation, and perhaps they underestimated the amount of insulation needed. Perhaps they didn’t recognize they needed a heat source near the insulation.”

The investigating taskforce later validated Daggett when they reported that there were no state or industry regulatory rules mandating power plant winterization. Unfortunately for Texas energy customers , that policy is ongoing. ERCOT does request power plants to perform checks and follow “best practices”. However, generator winterization mandates still do not exist in Texas law.

Governor Greg Abbott is now urging lawmakers to pass legislation requiring the energy grid is cold weather-ready.
