Every now and then, I see tweets about 2D animated movies made around the 2000s... Typically action-oriented movies that were aimed at a "big kid" audience. Typically boys around 8-12 years old-ish. Movies that infamously flopped pretty badly upon release...

The likes of... THE ROAD TO EL DORADO, TITAN A.E., ATLANTIS: THE LOST EMPIRE, TREASURE PLANET, and SINBAD: LEGEND OF THE SEVEN SEAS...

I'm gonna assume a lot of these people who pine for those kinds of movies to be made again weren't alive in the early 2000s, or were very very little when they were first released...

(I'm not specifically singling out Okiro, their post was simply wishing that these movies had done well when they first came out. No harm in that.)

Anyways... A lot of other people wonder why these movies that *slapped* flopped so hard back in the day...

For starters, it's because these movies were not very well-liked back when they first came out.

A lot of them got really mixed to negative critical reception, adults on message boards and forums thought they were or looked absolutely dumb, it didn't help that they were 2D animated during the era where any given new CG film was a big novelty worth seeing on a big screen. Keep in mind, the likes of SHARK TALE and CHICKEN LITTLE - both critically lambasted movies back in the day - still made more money than a beloved movie like LILO & STITCH.

Times changes, tastes change...

For example, in 2001, ATLANTIS: THE LOST EMPIRE was attacked for having a diverse set of characters. Swap "woke" for "politically correct", and you'll see that 2001-times were really no different from now times... We just didn't have social media back then. It was also ripped apart by some American anime fans who felt it was a deliberate rip-off of NADIA: THE SECRET OF THE BLUE WATER, and this was definitely fueled by the whole LION KING/KIMBA controversies that arose in the mid-to-late '90s. A lot of people were convinced that Disney was ripping off another anime classic. (Miramax, who were owned by Disney back then, also infamously tried to cut PRINCESS MONONOKE for its North American release, which also added fuel to the fire.)

But the main sort-of consensus on ATLANTIS was that it was a toothless PG-rated action movie that was probably too intense for younger kids and too silly for anyone over the age of 10 who would rather see a harder PG-13 movie, or something R-rated. They would be likelier to try to sneak into the SOUTH PARK movie than see something like ATLANTIS. That also affected TITAN A.E., TREASURE PLANET, etc. etc. Those movies targeted an audience that was never going to be there to begin with.

Meanwhile, in 2001, adults went and saw the CG animated comedies SHREK and MONSTERS, INC. in addition to families heading to them. The writing and the characters hooked them. I was at a Christmas party a week ago, and one of the older adult guests - who was maybe 10-15 years older than I am - was saying in a conversation about Disney and Pixar movies that he happened to like MONSTERS, INC. In a sorta, "oh yeah, that MONSTERS, INC. one. I like that!" It was hard to get a mid-20s adult to see an animated movie back then, and movies like SHREK and MONSTERS, INC. had the hooks for them.

The year prior, TITAN A.E. and EL DORADO flopped hard, but also, so did buddy comedy THE EMPEROR'S NEW GROOVE, and the general release of FANTASIA 2000. All largely 2D movies, at that. Aardman/DreamWorks' CHICKEN RUN did great, RUGRATS IN PARIS made back its budget, and DINOSAUR was popular despite not making enough for Disney to greenlight a sequel and to keep The Secret Lab (the production company set up to make the movie) operating.

2002 was when TREASURE PLANET came out. That shared the year with CG comedy ICE AGE, which did very well, and Disney's 2D family drama LILO & STITCH, which did pretty good! The anomaly of that sorry era for 2D animated movies... Everything else, though... EIGHT CRAZY NIGHTS, SPIRIT: STALLION OF THE CIMARRON, POWERPUFF GIRLS MOVIE, etc. Rough year. The big hit was the 3D funny animals movie, and also the hybrid STUART LITTLE sequel. Oddly, THE WILD THORNBERRYS MOVIE managed to somewhat make its budget back.

And of course, SINBAD happened to share its summer with FINDING NEMO. SINBAD didn't even make a fraction of FINDING NEMO's opening weekend gross... And that same year, RUGRATS GO WILD, BROTHER BEAR, etc.... All just grossed in the sub-$100m regions domestically and didn't do much better worldwide.

Movies like ATLANTIS and TREASURE PLANET, struggled because they didn't have an adult hook. I remember at the time, the lack of interest (I was 8 when ATLANTIS came out), and later seeing on forums what adults thought of these movies. How they didn't want to see them. How they looked uncool and stupid. Meanwhile, the likes of SHREK, MONSTERS (comma) INC., ICE AGE, and FINDING NEMO? That was where it was at!

ATLANTIS and TREASURE PLANET likely just looked like kiddie action movies that... Little kids probably couldn't go to see, so... For no one, really.

But some kids out there had the VHSes and DVDs of these movies, and watched them again and again and again... And took them, along with several other 2D flops of the era, into their adulthood. The ones who have kids are showing those same movies to them, so that's the happy ending. It's also kind of a Disney tradition... PINOCCHIO, FANTASIA, BAMBI, ALICE IN WONDERLAND, and SLEEPING BEAUTY were massive flops on their first releases, too... I do know that ATLANTIS and TREASURE PLANET did much better on home video than they did in theaters, and I'm sure TV airings helped as well.

Video saved many a non-Disney animated movie, too. Like, there's a reason why there were sequels to movies like ALL DOGS GO TO HEAVEN and FERNGULLY. They were video hits. Heck, if anything, the video sales for movies like EMPEROR'S NEW GROOVE and BROTHER BEAR are why they got direct-to-video sequels (and in NEW GROOVE's case, a TV series).

I could also go on a tangent about people pining for the '90s Disney animated movies like THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME and TARZAN, and those same people comparing those movies to the rather focus-grouped and toothless Disney animated films we get now. Like STRANGE WORLD and WISH. And yet, when the likes of HUNCHBACK, HERCULES, MULAN, and TARZAN were released? They were treated as dull, more of the same, "politically correct" (especially in MULAN's case), insulting even. Those movies were also test screened for random groups of toddlers, and stuff was cut or altered because of what they felt. Things weren't perfect back then, either... We may look back on '90s Disney Animation and say "What nerve they had, adapting all those dark stories, folklore, and even American history into G-rated family friendly musicals!" And back then, that really really rankled and even offended folks.

So it's a real case of "you had to be there". In hindsight, a movie like HUNCHBACK or ATLANTIS seems amazing compared to some of the stuff that comes out today. It hits different, for sure. "How could the world have skipped these movies at the box office???" The world was very different back then. Box office reflects where the zeitgeist is at, and it too reflects lots of things, more than just "audiences loved the movie". Sometimes seeing a movie that everyone else is seeing for whatever reason is like some larger cultural thing, that same movie could very well be forgotten within a year.

Let's use 2001, ATLANTIS' release year, as our example... Some of the highest grossing movies of that year were PEARL HARBOR, JURASSIC PARK III, VANILLA SKY, etc. PEARL HARBOR, for example, is pretty reviled... But lots of people went and saw it, but I don't see or hear an ounce of the positivity regularly given to ATLANTIS, given to that movie. And that's a Michael Bay movie, no less! His once widely-despised TRANSFORMERS movies have seen reappraisal in some circles, along with some of his other pictures... So, long story short, box office means a whole lot of things... It just captures where the public is at, not so much the perceived quality of the movie nor if audiences actually liked the movie.

And sometimes, a movie is too late or too early. It's hard to make an impression when you never know where the larger public is at, and there's lots of other stuff out there... Maybe the old way of measuring a movie's success has been archaic for decades now...

(i am also very hyperfixated on bugs right now, specifically butterflies, moths, and mantids, but i will make a board for any bug! please just include the common name and the scientific name or perhaps even a picture so i can get the correct bug, and this goes for sea creatures, plants, and fungi as well!!)

don't be scared to send in a request, regardless of what it is, but just bear in mind i will only be able to take the ones i feel i can confidently complete in a timely manner. i also will not be completing requests in the order that i receive them, because i feel that fudges with my creative process.

Hello, Angelic-beings! My name is Cherie Vivienne Ruby. Cherie from Cher Horowitz, I adore her so much, she's my favorite character from a movie 'Clueless'. Cherie also means Dear / Darling in Franch, so, I manifest that I'll become everyones most lovely girl. Vivienne from Vivienne Westwood, I loved Vivienne Westwood! and last, Ruby from Jennie and the stone. Beside it sounds so pretty, the red shade of the ruby stone was literally gorgeous and elegant.

I always love talking about zodiac, it always amaze me! My big three zodiac is Virgo, Leo as my Moon, and Taurus as my Rising sign. I always love being a Virgo! For me Virgo is the best zodiac ever, I'm not saying that the other zodiac is bad, I believe every each zodiac has their special things and I do love them! I surround by many people with different zodiacs and they are super kind, you guys are the loveliest! I'm super proud for being a Virgo girl in this century.

Now we go more specific about me. My MBTI is address as ENTJ. I am an extroverts! I love being with many peoples and having a lot of conversations with them. I love watching Disney Princesses, they are my comfort movies, Cinderella is my favorite princess. Romance-comedy / Teenager movies such as To All The Boys I've Loved Before, The Kissing Booth, Wild Child, Mean Girls, White Chicks, and there's a plenty more that I cannot mention, speaking of this genre of movie, i think we all know the name Emma Roberts, she's one of my favorite actor ever! I love all of her works, she's amazing. Anyway, back to my favorite genre of movie. I love Action movies such as The Kingsman, Johnny English, Fast and Furious. I love Sci-fi and Fantasy movies like MCU, Stranger Things, and Harry Potter. I also love to watch Modern Family and Keeping Up With The Kardashians! I spend my time watching Anime and Cartoons too! I have tons of anime and cartoon list that became my favorite, but I'll tell you my most favorite ever! It's Haikyuu, Jujutsu Kaisen, One Piece, Black Clover, Hunter X Hunter, and Fairytale. Seems like I enjoy kind of fantasy and magical plot more. For cartoon, I will say that it's The Loud House, Adventure Time, Powerpuff Girls, and Gravity Falls.

I love to listen to a music. Music always got me relax everytime and it feels like music is saying the exact thing that I cannot even describe in such a word. I'm a casual listener to Ariana Grande, The Weeknd, Sabrina Carpenter, Chase Atlantic, Taylor Swift, Niki and Olivia Rodrigo. Since the K-pop is getting heat lately, I jumped into it! I love IVE, Wonyoung is my #1 bias.

I fancy my eyes on fashion, makeup, skincare, and Formula 1! I am certified professional yapper of these things. Speaking of Formula 1, I’d say I’m a big fan of Ferrari with a sparkle of every team—I mean, I’m just a girl so why would I only pick one team when each driver is talented? However, let’s take a quick quiz, guess who’s my #1 favorite driver? Here’s the clue, 🌶️ you got it, right?

You know, I’ve been thinking abt villain/redemption discourse and I want to propose a challenge. I call it the SU Test. How many shows do you know that actually give every single character a chance to heal and be better? And I do mean everyone. No deaths. There needs to be antagonists and/or “problematic” characters. Any piece of media is fine. Anyone is welcome to play. Ready? Go! (Btw really like this blog!)

I'm gonna give this challenge a shot! Chose animated shows and movies.

Let's see if everyone got "the Steven Universe treatment," a trope which villain-redemption haters claim is "saturating shows with redemption arcs galore." (Wut? Lol)

In Steven Universe, none of the villains were killed off nor punished through retributive means that prevented the characters from getting a second chance/improving as people.

Will this criteria apply to the shows on my list? Let's find out!

Note: I will only be mentioning villains who were punished (non-restoratively; i.e., not allowed to get better) or killed off. Even one instance of these outcomes disqualifies a story from receiving a Steven Universe star of approval. ⭐

Finally, Marvel and DC cartoons won't appear on the list. Teen Titans (2003) will be the sole exception, however.

Is there any shows/movies you watch that arent anime that you like? Like cartoons, live action, etc? Have you heard of RWBY?

I used to watch stuff more actively, but I've fallen off.

But I've also kind of fallen off from anime/manga, too.

For ongoing manga for example, I now actively only follow One Piece and Dragon Ball Super and even then I fell behind OP for quite a while.

I fell behind My Hero Academia and since it seems to be heading towards the ending, I've decided to go back to it once it is done; I've kind of grown to have much more satisfaction in binging stories.

I think it's only recently I've tried to get into some anime/manga series again but not many seem to be working. So much new stuff feels like it is without any Identity of its own.

But going back to series/movies (live action stuff?) I've been even worse about that stuff.

I think the last live action series I remember watching and really loving was the HBO Chernobyl series. I think it still had that Hollywood dramatisation flavour in there, but I think it was an incredibly good depiction of not only the disaster, but also the society that created it and as someone living in a former Soviet Union country, I still recognise some of those hallmarks of that society as still being present today and how the countries under the Soviet regime are influenced by that regime to this day.

It jogged some really interesting memories.

To anyone interested and not in the know, though definitely heavy explicit content warning for it. It was genuinely extremely nauseating and hard to watch at points.

I've actually always been drawn much more towards any kind of cartoon (from eastern to western to anime) than I have towards live action stuff, well, live action movies and series that is.

Everyone else around me have been into like Game of Thrones, House, Scrubs, Lost. A bunch of stuff besides that.

My sister was into like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Bewitched (I think that's what the latter one with like the three witch women was called).

I sort of also caught like Xena the Warrior Princess and stuff when I was younger, all of these have been in my periphery, but I never really "paid attention" to them so to say.

From my childhood I have memories of some of movies like Home Alone and its sequel (they are in fact the only good ones), the Terminator movies (again only the first two are probably good), the Matrix movies (I kind of have a soft spot for all of them), a whole bunch of those dumb, probably not actually very good disaster movies like The Day After Tomorrow.

A lot of horror. Like The Shining and Alien and schlock stuff like the Resident Evil movies). I remember a lot of space horror stuff, actually. A whole bunch of it came on after I stayed up for way too late and I probably was exposed to a lot of it much younger than I should've been.

But the thing with much of this stuff is that I've seen most of it only once and I don't remember most of it down to the detail.

I have not seen a bunch of the big "classics" like any of Stanley Kubrick's or David Lynch's stuff, "cult" stuff like Bladerunner or some of the "pop culture/nerd" stuff like any Star Trek series. I've never fully seen the Lord of the Rings movies for example, either, only bits and pieces.

There is so much stuff I know I haven't seen I'd like to eventually get to.

As for cartoons, from Disney I have at least some level of like for Mulan, the old and new Fantasia movies, Frozen, Hunchback of Notre Dame, but I also remember liking Aladdin, The Little Mermaid, The Lion King and Princess and the Frog in particular. Disney's stuff has the wierd effect of having sincerety in there, but at points being undercut by strange leaps of "this is definitely for children in this forced way now" to me.

From Pixar movies my favourites are Ratatouille, Wall-E, Finding Nemo and Monsters Inc. Pixar feels like a "fully sincere" Disney.

Hmm. There is also DreamWorks. Shrek and Ice Age, I think. Shrek is a meme. The first movie maybe has a positive message about appearance not mattering in there, but a lot of it is kind of wierd and mean-spirited. I think I genuinely like the first Ice Age movie.

Hmm. Then there is also Don Bluth who I think has memorable animation, but whose movies I have zero memories for.

Watched a bunch of Cartoon Network cartoons: Powerpuff Girls, Courage the Cowardly Dog, Megas XLR (100% deserved more episodes btw, was a blast), Dexter's Laboratory, Samurai Jack.

Old cartoons like Tom and Jerry and Looney Tunes.

Spent much less time with Nickelodeon stuff, but I remember liking early Spongebob.

Futurama and early Simpsons were very good.

As for RWBY, I saw the first few episodes I think back when it dropped, but it was ugly and did nothing for me in terms of writing.

Felt something like an old Newgrounds series/a bad 3D animation I occasionally see around with equally bad fanfic writing.

Turns out I've consumed a lot of stuff and there is probably a whole bunch of stuff besides this I've consumed, too.

An Impressed Look at the Costumes in Sleeping Beauty (1959)

Let’s talk about the costumes (and art design) of the third Disney Princess movie.

First, let’s talk about the the Princess herself - Aurora!

For most of her screen time, Aurora is wearing this peasant dress. The colors are muted compared to her princess dress because she is, after all, a peasant.  They also coordinate well with the Prince’s hunting outfit. She matches her woodland surroundings, which makes sense since she is in hiding.

Female Representation: 8/10 This category is a little different for animation, since it is obviously a drawing instead of an actual garment. She’s completely covered and this certainly makes for a good costume for any age. But in comparison to her predecessors, Aurora looks much older and not much like a 16-year old. This dress especially makes her seem to be in her 20s, and I think the other two princesses I’ve talked about did a much better job at looking their ages.

Practicality: 9/10 I feel like she would catch her full skirt or her shawl on brambles all the time. Other than that, it’s very practical for her life as a peasant.

This is the princess dress that the fairies make for her, which she wears both at her debut and when she is asleep. Despite what the branding suggests, it is blue most of the time. The fairies argue over whether it should be blue or pink, so it does switch back and forth a few times. Still, it’s usually blue. Anyway, dress color controversy aside, it matches both the setting and is reasonably similar to the other costumes. She still stands out, though, which makes sense for this part of the story. It is very different from peasant dress, switching out her plain headband for a crown and bare-shouldered compared to the high collar. It would make sense for her second costume to be grown up, but I think the change in style might be indicative of how uncomfortable she is initially in the role of princess.

Female Representation: 7/10 As with the previous dress, this design is definitely adult - probably more than the previous one. I wouldn’t say it sexualizes her exactly, but the fact that she is 16 and has such unrealistic proportions is a concern. The ball gown is much more daring than her peasant dress and emphasizes how aged-up she appears compared to Cinderella and Snow White.

Practicality: 10/10 For a ball gown, it’s great. It passes the most important test of any garment - she can lay down for an extended period of time without mussing it!

Flora (red), Fauna (green), and Merryweather (blue) are the Good Fairies and they have a pretty major role in the movie. They have what I like to call Powerpuff Girl colors, where trios usually are color-coded with the primary colors (in light, not pigment). It is a shorthand to get across their differing personalities, with red being in charge, blue being pressed, and green being chill. 

Female Representation: 10/10 Fantastic representation of multiple body types. They are matronly without being dowdy. These dresses may not be as fun as the Princess’, but they are still brightly colored with multiple layers and accent colors to give the outfits an extra pop.

Practicality: 10/10 I admit I have no idea what practical wear for a fairy would be, but these are presumably their best outfits to attend a celebration at the palace (is it a christening? Seems like it would be). They obviously have no problem flying around in their costumes, so they must be very practical.

The fairies disguise themselves as peasants, maintaining their color-coding but much more muted. They are still wearing much brighter colors than Aurora does, so perhaps still a bit much for peasants (vibrant colors are difficult to dye). Still, it makes it easy to tell them apart and maintain character continuity (even their hair is done the same). Their layers are similar to Aurora’s but with mature touches.

Female Representation: 10/10 Basically the same as their previous outfits - these are obviously less fancy and would not be as fun. But they have more variety than their fairy costumes and thus show more individuality between the three. The layers are again fun and are now more diverse.

Practicality: 9/10 Very practical dresses for peasant women. The bright colors each of them has is the only reason it’s not a perfect score - the time spent dying something that brightly would make it not practical for everyday wear.

You didn’t think I’d forget the Mistress of All Evil, did you? Maleficent is the antagonist of the film, willing to curse a child just for not being invited to the birthday party (christening?). Her initial design was red and black, apparently, but they went with purple to soften it a bit. Still, she makes for a very intimidating (and memorable!) figure. Her headwear looks reasonably period-appropriate, though emphasized to look more like horns than was necessarily the fashion. The rest of her outfit is relatively shapeless, just voluminous robes around her thing figure. She contrasts with the plump Good Fairies by being emaciated and extremely pale.

Female Representation: 10/10 It would be easy to sexualize the villainess as a way to compare her to the virginal princess (or matronly good fairies). But she is pretty gender-neutral, unlike the previous villainesses in princess movies. And I think it’s great that a representation of All Evil doesn’t emphasize gendered traits to enhance her malevolence.

Practicality: 9/10 Again, this category maybe doesn’t work for magical creatures. The robe may look like tentacles, but I can’t imagine how she never trips over all that fabric. Still, it’s pretty practical all things considered.

What’re the vest powerpuff shops in ur opinion and why?

Im going to assume ship in this. Alright here we go!

I can see really any pairing with the girls and boys and ill throw in some other ones too. But imma go down the line by my faves. Im only gonna put the ships i like so if you dont see one then i prob dont ship it hard, or i havent thought about it. 

I know you didnt ask but i feel like no one is fully straight here and i love that vibe.

Blossutch- 100/10: THE FLAVOR. Amazing, perfection, just yes. I think Blossom and Butch would have a very fun dynamic. The classic uptight girl with the laid back guy. The complement each other and add to each others strengths. Also I think they are the best looking ship. They give me Roger Rabbit and Jessica Rabbit vibes. Goofy and serious at the same time. aka my wife can kick your ass and id let her kick mine too. Def my fav ship. ITS SOOOOO GOOD. BUTCH IS A SIMP. fuck it imma simp for this ship. 

Reds/Blossick: Out of the matching ships, this one is my fav. The rivals to lovers complex is so funny here because its two people who try to be the best at all times and they would get so caught up in out doing each other that they don’t realize they would be perfect for each other. I think they would also have the understanding of what it takes to be a leader and have that weighing on their shoulders. King and queen vibes. Really close to number one but my fav color code ship. ALSO THESE FICS ARE SO GOOD. (and prob my fav ship growing up)

Greens/Butchercup: The counterpart ships are really nice because they reveal the weakness that they each face and the other one can relate. This is just the fun couple that likes to party but loves the other so much. It rough and gritty but pure and some people may not understand them but they only care about each other anyways.  

Blues/Boomubbles: This one is like pure fluff. Its soft, sweet and simple and just a really cute ship. They are like swans. They have one true soul mate and then they die. Heres the thing. I think Bubbs and Boom Boom are meant for each other and they are prob the best ship in color code (i just like the drama of the reds lol) I perfer bubbs with him over anyone else. 

Butchubbles: Classic bad boy, girl next door ship. Leather jackets and soda pop. Everyone is intimidated by Butch except for his fluffy girl who makes him watch disney movies and shows him its ok to cry. Probably the most aesthetically pleasing ship

Boomer x Buttercup: This is cute. Boomer is supportive of his strong ass kicking girlfriend and bc loves her adorable air head man. 

Brickercup: They are the most stubborn ship i would assume. But still cute and intense. I vibe with it. 

BlossomxBoomer: Its cute, i dont mind it. Smartest girl and dumbest boy. kinda bland but cute. 

BrickxBubbles: Kinda like the bad boy x sweet girl vibe but with less flavor idk. its fine.    

(me not knowing all the ship names, but to be fair none of the ship names are as pleasing as other ones lol) 

Now onto the other crack ships

Princess x Brat: The sugar momma vibes this gives off. I could just imagine Brat scamming people on the internet for money and then she finds princess and genuinely falls in love with her and instead of Princess having a wimp arranged marriage of a husband, she has a baddie wife. the fucking flavor of this???? amazing. 1000/10 

Princess X Robin: There was a whole discussion with friends about this and its the rich badass woman with the humble girl who kicks the rich bitchs ass and brings her ego down. Robin is a lawyer in this ship and defends her business mafia wife. 

Princess x Bubbles: This is lowkey funny because the thought of Princess stopping crime cause she got whipped by the joy and laughter. 

Princess X Blossom: Princess making all those plans and elaborate machines not to steal but to get noticed???? Yes please. 

Robin x Mike: Cute. typical boy next door meets girl next door (wheres the flavor) 

Boomer x Mike: You can not tell me the boom boom is straight. I wont accept it. Just two soft boys and one might be an ex-con but mike says everyone has flaws. SOMEONE PLEASE DRAW OR WRITE ABOUT THIS. I NEED IT. (XBOX ON SHIP) 

Mitch x Mike: Mitch is gay panic boy but tries to be cool but mike is so pure and soft and loves his goth bf. 

Boomer x Mitch: Because surfer boi with goth boi and the fact that their ship name is BITCH AHAHHAHAHAH. 

I dont think the punks and ruffs would go well together too much chaos. And even though i could see some puffs x punks, not my fav. I hope you liked this and im always down for talking about ships :)

26, 29, 30, 36?

*cracks knuckles*Alright, let’s do this.

26: The late Robin Williams & Hayao Miyazaki are two particular people in my life I’ve idolized for what happiness/imagination they’ve brought into others lives. Robin Williams untimely passing still hurts for me to look back on because this man made it his mission to bring so much joy into other peoples lives through his acting on the big screen, whether it was dramatic or comedic. That’s what I found the most impressive about Robin’s range in acting. He could be an over the top funny individual, but Robin’s acting chops were in a league of their own. Whether he was behind the microphone having the time of his life as Genie on Aladdin or giving a powerful dramatic performance on Good Will Hunting as Will’s therapist, I could feel the unconditional kindness. There was something about Robin’s acting power that would usually manage to reel me in. Even if I never knew him in real life, obviously, this man just radiated with so much kindness that I felt from his entire presence on screen. It’s seriously unfortunate what became of Robin Williams in the end with his unexpected death, but his legacy has inspired me to be kinder to others in real life. As for Hayao Miyazaki, this guy is a huge factor in why I got into loving anime related stuff all the more, as his creations in storytelling and the art itself for the movies were beyond unlike anything I still have yet to seen be topped quite frankly. It’s so easy for me to get emotionally lost in his films like My Neighbor Totoro, Princess Mononoke, Castle In The Sky, and Spirited Away. This man never ceases to amaze me with how usually impactful and in depth his films are. They’re so full life that it’s easy to lose sight of whats happening in the actual story at times. Mayazaki understood how to breathe a ton of humanity into creating such resonating works of fiction. Have a much greater appreciation for them in my adult years. There’s a reason why they inspired companies, like Pixar, to create immersive stories of their own.

30: Favorite TV shows range from Cowboy Bebop, Avatar The Last Airbender, Yu Yu Hakusho, Digimon Adventure 01 & Tamers, Teen Titans (2003), Batman The Animated Series, Ed, Edd,& Eddy, Samurai Jack, Courage The Cowardly Dog, The Powerpuff Girls (Screw that garbage reboot.), Chowder, Bojack Horseman, DuckTales (1987), DuckTales (2017), Gravity Falls, Code Geass (This series has shaky writing in a number of areas, but that ending was beautiful.), Amphibia, Steven Universe, Oban Star Racers, Made In Abyss, Stranger Things, Gargoyles, My Hero Academia, Naruto (I’ve got a soft spot for this series despite my MANY problems with its story later on.), Pokemon (Serious nostalgia overload!), Dragonball Z (My very first anime series I got into through the Toonami block. 36: My three dream scenarios I’d like to fulfill? 

1: Become A Voice Actor

Been interested in voice acting since I was a young teen, but have been in a conflicted state over these recent passing years in my life on whether or not I’d like to approach that route. There’s a lot of commitment I’d have to put into auditioning my butt off for roles I may or not get. Then comes the consistent practicing to keep my vocal chords in shape, so I don’t get rusty whatsoever. The industry for this kind of job can be hard to get recognized in too by how many other notable well known VA’s there are already. Not to mention, from what I’ve researched up on being a voice actor doesn’t bring in the money naturally, as it’s more of a passion job which that’s terrific and all, but if I want to partake in this profession I’ll have to juggle a job along with that which putting all those factors in my head honestly makes me intimidated. Ahhh well, it’s just something I’ll have to wait and see on if I can make that idea into a reality or not. No need to rush myself, of course.

2: Taking Up The Mantle Of Reviewing Shows & Films For A Living

Fiction, just like for many people, has been a great deal of helping me in my life moments of stress, solitude, depression, and anger. I’d love nothing more than to further express that to anyone out there in reviewing in great detail certain films or shows that I’ve come to love over these years in my life so far. Mostly for animation though, as its been a gateway for finding many gems of quality films or series. It never ceases to surprise me on how creative and powerful animation can be with its inventive ways of getting me to become an emotional mess. While I do enjoy live action series and films they pale in comparison to the beauty animation has brought into my life, since my early childhood of watching shows on Cartoon Network, Toon Disney, and Nickelodeon to a smaller degree. I’d like to think I’m good enough with how I present my reasons on why I feel so strongly connected to these stories showcasing characters trying to find hope in their own hard times. I try my hardest to take moments of my own life and find ways to connect it with whatever story I’m getting into next, so it can be all the more a special experience for myself. It’s important to put whatever character resonates with you most in their shoes for why you feel their emotional journey connecting with your own life on every conceivable level possible. That will make it when you write these kinds of reviews a very empowering read for others to feel either heard in their own feelings or simply giving others a new perspective to consider on this piece of fiction you’re discussing. Seeing some of my own particular analytical posts in the past here on Tumblr garner some attention from people gives me a boost of feeling better about potentially making this choice.

3: Starting A Family Of My Own…?

I can’t begin to tell ya how many times I’ve gone back and forth for getting married in the distant future to become a father has sped through my mind. On one hand, it scares the crap out of me to be taking up that big of a responsibility. However, on the other hand its deeply fascinated me emotionally of creating life through love for your significant other in starting your own family tree. I’d love to be able to raise kids of my own to pass on the lessons I’ve learned in life to make them become better people in the distant future, while showering them with unconditional love and affection. That would fill me up with such an indescribable joyous feeling to hear their own dreams and desires on what they want to accomplish in life. While I’d be a strict parent, I wouldn’t be a hard headed one quick to dismiss their own complaints if they had problems with how I handled things, once they start to get older. The kind of parent I’d want to be is an understanding open minded one who doesn’t judge their son or daughter for when they have an issue with me. Just because I’m a parent in that scenario doesn’t put me on a pedestal of immunity from criticism. Granted, I certainly don’t want to be a doormat for them to try taking advantage of either, but it’s also important to not let your parental role go to your head, too.

Although, I don’t plan on even trying to make this last dream of mine happen anytime soon. This is something that is MUCH later down the road that I wish to have happen. However, I won’t lie and say that I haven’t considered just staying content as a single guy for the rest of my life relying on close friends to bring me joy equivalent to this dream. While I adore the concept of creating life through love and being a father, there’s a shit ton of responsibility that comes with it. The life of a parent is not just putting your all into it. You gotta give more than just 100% when wanting to be a parent. It’s a serious test of your spiritual endurance, which I’m not sure is something I’ll ever have the courage to do, but then again things can change in life on the flip of a dime, so I’ll see how this all plays out for myself. Maybe I’ll stay happily single or I’ll happily be raising kids.

Gee, I wonder why this dream of being a parent resurfaced in my head recently this year? Oh yeah, it was thanks to this character here.

Seriously, Della Duck holds a real special place in my heart for making me feel these kind of feelings yet again. Darn you space mom! LOL.

Unfortunately, before she can get to her favorite chapter about deductibles, she gets interrupted by everyone's favorite Santa Claus Claw Demon.

For the first time since Blisstersweet Symphony, Him makes an onscreen appearance in the reboot. He had one mention in Mojo The Great and got replaced by a generic devil in Ragnarock and Roll, but this is his first on-screen appearance in Season 3. There's already one problem with his appearance in this episode: he doesn't have his echoed voice. That is going to be a sign.

Blossom tries to throw the book at him, not exactly saying that joke but a different one that fits just as well, but Him shoots her with a beam that shrinks her before the book could even leave her hands. Him happily tells Blossom that...

Him: Your soul is mine!

Even without his voice filter, this episode's Him is far closer to the Him I would imagine him to be. I'd rather see Him as Shang Tsung from the first Mortal Kombat movie than the Frogurt salesman from that one episode of the Simpsons. Blossom asks how this happened, and he explains to her that her sisters did it.

We get a flashback to Bubbles and Buttercup, or Bubblescup as they essentially share the same role in this episode, going ga-ga over the Snowsploder 7000 Turbo. It's a rocket powered bobsled that comes equipped with a waffle maker, and it's available for the low, low price of $585!

Unfortunately, Buttercup only has $4, and Bubbles has a huge wad of cash that only goes up to $580. I guess if she can eye laser any potential mugger, she can carry her whole life savings with her. Unfortunately, with only $584, they're a dollar short, and they'd give anything to get that dollar. Suddenly, Him shows up to offer them a contract: they get that dollar, but they have to give him Blossom's soul, which he says is the most important thing to them.

Yeah, apparently not important enough, as they agree to this contract immediately. One would think an offer from such a prominent member of the Powerpuff Girls' Rogues Gallery would give Bubblescup some pause, but the episode wouldn't continue if they didn't sign this contract with no thought whatsoever. I mean, it's just their sister, what harm could selling her soul possibly do compared to the agony of not having a rocket-powered bobsled that can make waffles?

Bubbles: Ooh, I love the red ink!

Him: Yeah...ink...

Maybe I'm just bewildered that this reboot could imply that blood exists, but I found that particular line funny.

After that flashback, Blossom is immediately condemned to Him's realm, shown for the first time in this reboot. The original had so many great shots of that realm. In fact, it's one of the few things that were improved in Season 5 and 6, because they took advantage of computer animation to make it as surreal as possible! With 2016's amazing technology, what does the reboot do with it?

Eh, just put some random objects in a purple and green gradient, and have them all float in the void. I could see this as Blossom's personal hell, and the way she reacts to it implies that could be the case. But, no, Him says this is his home, and this is how he likes it.

As Blossom is starting to go insane from all of the nonsensical items in this realm, like apples and oranges in the same basket, Him is going to play in a mariachi band. I guess since this is the Chaos Realm, grabbing a joke from the Soundless Slippers pile makes a lot more sense.

Meanwhile in the world of the living, Bubbles and Buttercup run into a problem: they may have the exact money for that bobsled, but they still need to pay tax! If only Blossom was there to teach them about the importance of that.

Just kidding, of course Bubblescup get the bobsled and are having the time of their lives. Pretty much every scene with Bubblescup's portion of the episode has the same premise: they don't have any remorse over what they did to Blossom. They don't even mention her name. I could understand Buttercup not realizing the error of her ways, because she's the rascally little green princess, but Bubbles is okay with this, too?

There's a little more plot to this, and I really mean little. Their amazing bobsled has caught the eye of a fellow professional bobsledder, who wants to sign them up to be a part of his team...

...the Quacksledders! It may not be the Disney-related Ducks I usually talk about, but this is the closest we get to a crossover between the two shows I review, so I might as well mention it.

Speaking of which, much like an episode of a different show I just reviewed, they try to do some sort of transition between these two plots. Most of them come off like this one:

Buttercup: (after becoming a Quacksledder) This is the best day ever!

Him: Ugh, this is the worst day ever!

This feels very forced by comparison. The shots aren't even remotely similar visually. This would have been mitigated a little if Him actually lived in a fiery place of misery, because at least there would be some contrast to the icy place of happiness that Bubblescup is in. As Him is complaining about his trumpet player keeping the band from becoming great, he bumps into a door.

Him doesn't remember there being a door or a giant wall in his realm, and he has to press the buzzer. The guy behind that buzzer asks if he has an appointment, and he tells him that he's the supreme ruler of this realm. The guy tells him he isn't. The door opens, and Him can't believe his eyes when he sees that monster with red horn-like structures on her head.

Somehow, Blossom took over the realm while Him was busy with his band, rebranding it as Chaos Incorporated. They don't elaborate how this happened. She just says that she lived in a place that was disorganized, and then she organized it. She then opens a window showing a bunch of demons in cubicles, making cold calls.

This is an episode where Blossom's soul is sold to the devil, she goes to a place that is essentially hell in all but name or looks, and Blossom ends up becoming the supreme ruler of it. As soon as Him says "what" at this, we get a Townsville news bulletin.

No, there's no real transition here. This bulletin is all about the hit bobsledding sensation. They appear on magazines, boxes of WhEaties, and they even their own hit record in Japan. Newscaster Nick StillNoLastName interviews them to ask what their secret is. Needless to say, they don't say it was because they sold their sister's soul to the devil.

Bubbles and Buttercup are ready for Bobsledageddon, and Buttercup specifically tells any potential challengers to "bring it on".

In come the Tracer Triplets, the constant winners of the Bobsledageddon. I can't help but think that's because they are apparently the only other team that decided to show up for it, as we don't see anyone else. That's still one more than the Battle of the Bands from Electric Buttercup, at least. Also, they're evil! How evil?

Yellow Tracer Triplet: Also, we don't think baby animals are cute!

Nothing actually caused them to say this, but they had to say it because they're the bad guys! Bubbles is absolutely delighted to hear this from them.

And by that, I mean she makes this veiny face and turns her pigtails into fire. She then tackles the not-Derbytantes, leading to an off-screen beatdown even Buttercup can't bear to watch. See, the joke is that Bubbles is normally a cute little teddy bear, but sometimes, she gets angry! What an original joke, and not something that has been overdone.

This plot is so boring. If I have to watch this plot for another minute, I'm going to go nuts. I don't belong in this plot, see? I wish we could go back to the other place.

Thankfully, we do, using an explosion as a transition. At least it's something. This totally-not-a-place-where-damned-souls-are-tortured-for-all-eternity has now become a call center, where demons like Him cold call people with amazing offers that only cost their soul.

Blossom shows up, and she's cosplaying and acting as the boss from Office Space, complete with a coffee mug and suspenders. This outfit only lasts this one scene, and it's only there because this reference just wouldn't be as funny without it. It's not really that funny even with it, to be honest.

Because he failed to abide by the dress code, which did not include Santa Claus outfits, he gets demoted to the mail department. I wish they would have elaborated on this beyond having winged devils taking care of this, but I can assume this is where all the junk mail comes from. He wants his realm back, and his sentient leprechaun cup gives him an idea on just how to get it: tear up that contract! Thanking him for the idea, Him shoves his sentient leprechaun cup into the mail chute.

Oh yeah, maybe I should elaborate on that. See, this would cause a distraction, so Him can go to the filing cabinet to find that contract before Blossom can fix it. There, that explains everything.

Blossom, now back in the suit she was wearing before, catches Him in the act, revealing that the contract was in her stubs this whole time. Boss Blossom doesn't want to go home, she has so much to do. She just got finished collating the koalas. Chaos, ooooh!

Those koalas do end up being the last straw, as he starts firing lasers that turn into a walrus, a Christmas tree, and an accordion. I originally was confused by the Christmas tree, considering what this villain represents, but then I realized he wears a Santa Claus outfit. As for the walrus and the accordion...chaos! Ooooh!

This fight scene isn't too bad, actually. I actually liked this one bit where, while Blossom is putting those random items Him was firing at her in a filing cabinet, Him just bursts out of that cabinet and punches her out. That actually took me by surprise, which, surprisingly for an episode with "chaos" in the name, is pretty rare.

Best of all, it's not one-sided, with both combatants dishing out pain on each other in an equal amount. I'd argue the devil should be putting up way more of a fight, but I'd argue this lack of chaos has weakened him.

This ends with the devilish supreme ruler of this realm of pure darkness playing a game of tug-of-war with Him. How that sentence isn't me making another potshot at the Reboot Puffs is part of the reason I kind of like this episode. I mean, Blossom taking over what is essentially Hell.

After the obvious conclusion of a tug-of-war involving a piece of paper and a pair of claws, everything gets reset. Chaos Incorporated goes back to the uninspired gradient nothing-scape it was before, and Bubblescup's bobsled disappears while they're in mid-air. Fortunately for them, they can fly. Unfortunately for them, they forgot that about as much as they forgot how important Blossom is to them.

After an exterior shot of the house with sitcom music playing over it, feels like the Powerpuff Girls to me, I lie, we see Bubblescup practically mummified in full-body casts. Blossom tells them that she hopes they learned their lesson.

The episode does at least do a book end, a literal one, by having Blossom read the Tax Code book to them. The soul sellers groan, as if this wasn't a deserved punishment. Episode end.

Does the title fit?

The "brand" part actually fits into what Blossom wants to do with Him's.

How does it stack up?

I honestly couldn't give this a Disgusted. The plot seems like it was going to turn into another "Blossom gets the short end of the stick" episode, but it ends up turning into a rather unique episode.

I can't imagine Him fans are going to be very happy with this one, though. I would personally disagree, as I found it funny that the biggest evil of the franchise was relegated to just being a mere white-collar worker, but I can see how people would hate that.

I really didn't have much to hate about this one outside of a rather useless B-plot that only served to give the A-plot a decent premise and nothing else. I debated whether or not this should be a really low Happy or a really high Neutral, and I think the concept put it slightly above that threshold.

Next, a tale about a tail unlike any other. There's a good reason for that.
