Those specific ingredients are measured by weight because you BUY THEM BY WEIGHT. Either prepackaged or at the deli counter, you will figure out how much you want by weight, and the price is given in dollars per pound. They’re telling you how much to BUY.
No one in this thread is saying baking or cooking by volume is better or the only way it’s ever done in the US, and yes, there are more people baking by mass in the US than ever before, because anyone who knows anything knows mass is more accurate. We’re saying that using volume is more COMMON in the US and are examining the reasons. I, a USAmerican with a background in medicine and science, would LOVE if the whole country switched to metric and measuring by mass tomorrow, but the former would take an act of Congress or something else official, and approximately half the people in our government (currently a bit more than that) are dedicated to the idea that changing anything even remotely “American” is an evil communist plot to convince their children that Jesus kneels for the national anthem or whatever the fuck.
Like, yelling about some cookbooks you found isn’t changing the fact that most people in this country don’t have scales in their kitchens. Hell, the industrial kitchen I worked in for a few summers didn’t even have one. I do, mostly because I use it for my French press, but I only have it bc my brother gave it to me, and HE only got it because he was experimenting with wine and beer making, two disciplines that demand the kind of accuracy only measuring by mass can provide. I agree that mass is a better way to do recipes, but on average, people usually measure by volume and it’s probably gonna take a bit for that to change.

So, my mom worked at NASA for some time before I was born and I asked her about the American use of US customary units when I heard about the Mars Climate Orbiter's crash.
And what she told me — which was surely a simplification somehow, I was a child at the time — was that periodically, someone would push for this within NASA, and then they would do a study to explore the possibility of forcing them and all the various contractors to use metric, and they would come up with a number which was the cost of doing that and replacing all the non-metric tooling, and then they would shelve the proposal.
So, my point is: before that I thought of the unit thing as like an American culture thing. Like Americans are set in their ways and conservative and arrogant, or whatever. After that, I thought of the unit thing as a state capacity thing. Americans simply can't do a lot of stuff, and when they can't, they puff themselves up defensively, like what they're forced to do is the best way to do things anyways.

Wyrms come in a lot of different flavors in Abattoir land, so we're starting with the Sweep variety! More info found BELOW!
Containing some of the largest species of Wyrms, Sweeps are distinguished by their mouth placed ventrally on the proboscis, needle-like teeth, all 8 limbs used for locomotion, and a swollen hind gut. Sweeps are typically some of the most hardy Wyrms in the wastes, able to continue to move at all temperatures. They thrive at a range of about -100 to -160 degrees Fahrenheit, but are unbothered up and to around freezing point. They ARE more vulnerable to the scalding rain more typical to the Southern areas of their range. If they get to hot they swell up and can burst, so they typically try to stay Northernly! Honestly the best weather prediction you can find nowadays is these guys stuffing themselves full of ice and snow before a storm rolls in.
But! We've got a varied bunch here so lets get into the SPECIFICS of these Annelids! I've got a small sample just to show off some of the basic types you'll encounter.
Sleek Wanderer These guys are found in the remnants of the great plains, which are now vasts expanses of snow and ice. Sleeks are primed to spend their lives enduring the biting winds of their home as they snuffle their way through the ground cover. They move especially slowly, often a single step for every sweep of their mouth! Being in such a barren home, they don't really worry about too much going on around them. Assuming you don't bother them too much you can touch them or even ride one and it wont pay you any mind. The only time they get a little aggressive is when brooding, then they may try to strike. Though it isn't anything you could not leisurely side step.
Whistle The noisiest of the bunch, these guys are known for the iconic whistling noise they make during the uh.. digestion process. They live in warmer areas and eat a lot of plant matter so they tend to have a more swollen gut. On the smaller side of things though! And a LOT quicker than other sweeps, they WILL turn and slash you if you startle them. Still not fast enough to meaningfully chase a human, but they got some reach on em! They typically run into humans a bit more as they also like to congregate around the exteriors of Abattoirs to eat the plants that grow there.
Grimacing Chatter The most BEAUTIFUL of the sweeps, these guys like to curl up their 'lips' and expose their teeth down to the roots. Their teeth are mobile as well, used to shift through the snow and dirt for food. The sound of these teeth clattering against each other is a signature of these big beasties. Probably for the best as these fellas are EXTREMELY aggressive! They are the Southern most variety of sweep, dealing with a wide range of predators by flailing their head towards any perceived threat. If you get caught in their maw they WILL start to chow down on you, never a missed meal with these guys!
Eastward A sweep that enjoys the spoils of a sanguine Atlantic! Eastwards are so named because they are usually always facing that direction, nibbling at the snow and ice to feed on any blood that blows in on the breeze. They begin their lives spawned by the blood sea and will spend the first half of their lives walking away from the ocean. The second half of their life is spent walking back towards it! Once their they are back at the shore, they are able to withstand the heat drifting up from the sea by sweating profusely. They keep most of their body on the frozen shore, reaching into the warmth with their big ass mouth. After a life of walking, they will gorge themselves on blood until they breed, after which they promptly die. Nature is beautiful even now!
Swingsnap While Wyrms have no eyes and therefore don't really have a concept of light, the fact that humans and their derived forms still mainly rely on sight has greatly influenced the Swingsnap. Their dark coloration is perfect for blending in with the eternal night of the wasteland! They possess a highly sensitive sense of smell/taste to track down the remnants of humanity. Once they come upon their quarry, they are quickly able to coil their toothy maw around them, stabbing into them with many hundreds of teeth. Their prey is 'chewed' by the constant coiling and shifting of the mouth, drunk down bit by bit. After a week or so of gnawing, they will drop the remaining pile of gristle and begin the hunt once more.
That's the gist for these fellas! Typically these are the chillest of all Wyrms, both literally and in the attitude sense! Most of the time you'll run into these guys just in the middle of nowhere. Stand still and they'll most likely just pass you by.

Yandere Hybrid Team 141
I’ve been seeing posts like this and thought I would jump on the bandwagon. The idea of yandere hybrid 141 is not my idea but this specific scenario is.
Summary: Team 141 stumbles upon y/n. Thinking that she’s small and fragile they attempt to ‘take advantage’ of her only to figure out she’s a polar bear hybrid. (Polar bear hybrid was chosen because they actively hunt humans.)
Team 141 had relocated, their base stationed in colder weather. Soap didn’t mind, considering he was merged with a wolf. He quite liked the snow and throwing snowballs at his captain.
Price was not amused at all. Given the fact that he was a grizzly bear hybrid his instincts told him to get ready to hibernate. Thus, leaving the male annoyed most of the time. A few times he almost lunged at Gaz for flying around so much in his little ‘battle’ with soap.
Gaz, being a harpy was the most human like out of all the men. The only thing that changed about him was his arms, meaning that the male usually stayed bundled up which in turn was given odd looks by ghost from time to time. But now ghost, an undead being began to get used to seeing his fellow teammate underneath two layers of clothing
Gaz was the first one to stumble upon you During one of his rounds he looked up from above, his eyes catching sight of you in the cold, crisp water. White, round ears were on top of your head. You must’ve been a panda hybrid. You didn’t seem dangerous at all.
A wicked grin crossed Gaz’s face. Swooping down, the sharp claws grabbing you. But before he could get far with you, you bared your teeth at him. Sharp canines covered in blood from your latest kill were flashed. Your sharp claws slashed his face before dragging him down into the water. Immediately your form switching making Gaz’s eyes widen in horror. Such a sweet, helpless looking girl was actually a polar bear hybrid. Your pupils dilated, jaws snapping at him as the beast seemed to foam at the mouth, getting ready to rip his throat out.
Price was the first to arrive, hearing Gaz’s screams and yells.
While Gaz was under you he saw a flash of brown. The harpy sitting up, wincing in pain at his broken leg but his eyes leaving the mangled leg and up towards the fight that was happening. The roars of both the bears attracting the attention of the rest of the team. Gaz has never seen price almost loose a fight before. Polar bears were already larger than grizzled bears but because you were a female you have a good two feet over him. Your fur was more adapted to the arctic waters but Price’s wasn’t, his movements were a tad bit slower than yours due to the below freezing temperatures. Just as the rest of team 141 arrived you were gone.
After the ‘fight’ Price scolded Gaz. Grumbling about how he shouldn’t have assumed what kind of hybrid you were. But based off of your human descriptions he didn’t blame Gaz for trying to snatch you up.
Price only had minor injuries. A couple of gashes and bruises. It would leave some scars but nothing too serious. On the other hand Gaz’s leg was broken. The gash on his face had left a nasty scar. Ghost only mocked the younger male, telling him to suck it up and to not do dumb shit.
Soap had the second encounter with you. After a few months Gaz was able to walk again. But Soap was to accompany him as they did their rounds.
“That’s her.” Gaz whispered, crouching down making Soap follow suit. The wolf hybrid peeking around the corner to see you. He couldn’t believe that you were the one that did all that damage. Granite it was in self defense but you looked so fragile and soft.
When y/n turned around she had a fish in her mouth. Her eyes immediately catching onto Soaps who had been careless when admiring y/n from a distance. Y/n’s gaze wasn’t threatening like what Gaz had described. She seemed curious.
Soap took this as a green light to fully come out. Gaz whispers to not falling on deaf ears. When soap began to get too close a growl came from y/n as she took a step back making her drop her fish. She had to look up at him, which she didn’t like.
After a few moments Soap gained her trust, picking up the dropped fish and slowly inching close to her. Y/n opened her mouth, taking the fish from his hand. Nuzzling her black button nose against his hand, a purr coming out of her but she stopped. A whiff of Gaz’s scent on Soaps hand making y/n pull away. “No! No, no, no! I’m friendly.” Soap exclaimed, putting his hands up. He needed to avoid all conflict. The only person that was able to take you down was captain price, he doubted that Ghost could take you down in your monster form. Soap knew he’d need to calm you down. Polar bears actively hunt humans, meaning Gaz and himself were on your lunch menu. But y/n only turned around leaving once more.
Now price’s encounter with you went a little bit different. The man went out to have a smoke. “That shit stinks.” A feminine voice came from behind Price. Turning around he seen your form crouched down, a wolf torn open in front of you. It was the same size as Soap in his monster form. Its guts spilled out, coating the white snow in its blood.
“Didn’t know you could talk.” Price muttered, breathing in the smoke from the cigar. His eyes taking in your form. You were fragile looking, just as Gaz said. Your big doe eyes could have fooled him.
Y/n didn’t respond, instead opting to rip out more chunks from the wolf with her jaws. Tearing into the predator that turned into her prey. “Ya�� hurt one of my men.” Price said loud enough for y/n to hear.
“That lousy excuse of a bird?” Y/n said as she ripped into the wolf. “Tell him to keep thinking with his dick. Maybe next time I’ll tear his throat open.”
Price chuckled, leaning back on the tree as he watched you eat. You were fiesty. The longer he stared at you the more the gears in his head turned. You had wide hips, perfect for carrying his cups. You looked healthy, a few scars hear and there but each one told a story.
Pushing himself off the tree he stalked towards you. A growl ripping through y/n’s throat as she make eye contact with Price.
“I ain’t gon take your food sweetheart.” Price said as he crouched down in front of you and your kill.
“I said that shit stinks. Put it out.”
“And if I don’t.”
“I’ll eat you before you can turn.”
The two looked at each other for a while. “I’m stronger and faster than you darlin’.”
“Not if I drown you in that water you won’t be.” Y/n shot back. Ah, so she’s caught on to his weakness. Price was considerably weaker in colder water temperatures. Especially if the waters were deep.
Needless to say, Price put out the cigar.

I'm going to answer these, but oh my goodness am I invested in why the strawberry is threatening the desert!
🍓 How did you get into writing fanfiction? Is it bad to say I honestly don't remember? 😅 The best I can remember is a friend and I were looking at Hetalia memes and stumbled upon fanfiction.net. A world of beautiful mistakes and regrets opened its doors
It kind of amazed me that I could make my own stories about characters I already loved and basically play with the characters like dolls and put them into scenarios and machinations of my own devising. And I never stopped.
🔪 What's the weirdest topic you researched for a writing project? Oh, I have a list because I found most of the topics I've had to research fascinating. These are all from fanfics I haven't finished yet, but the top three that sound weird are probably:
Scars. I have done so much research on this subject from burn scars to lacerations, surgical scars, skin grafts, and my personal favorite, Lichtenburg scars. I needed to know the healing time for a few of them, sensitivity to touch and atmospheric pressure (weather and sudden temperature changes), the likelihood of some scars to fade better than others, and so on. One of my main OCs has burn scarring across his upper back and shoulders and some general nicks and cuts that are visible, which kind of spurred this whole interest.
Sexual intimacy and sensitivity in paraplegics. It sounds so much worse than it is, but it ties into my Oracle Tim fanfic where he uses a wheelchair due to paralysis from the waist down. I fell into a pit of interest when I was looking into things regarding paraplegia and spinal cord injuries and needed to know EVERYTHING I possibly could! This included the different wheelchairs, types of paralysis, occupational therapy, and how the human body is so adaptable and unique. I read something about arousal in one article and suddenly needed to know everything about it. You can probably tell by now that anatomy and physiology is a special interest of mine!
Eels. You know the shrieking eels from The Princess Bride? I started a Young Justice AU (I'm going to finish it I swear) and needed to know about eels. They lay eggs, they do not have testicles, they're carnivorous predators, and I made Superboy fight the eels.
🏜️ What's your favourite type of comment to receive on your work? I lose my mind every time I get a comment that either quotes something from the fic and expands on it or screams about it, or picks out a detail I thought would go unnoticed! But people who can poke fun and make me laugh always put a smile on my face for the rest of the day! :D

[father-daughter] iron tank!helena & von pushup one-shot
Helena couldn't afford shit. But to be more specific, she couldn't afford a new sink, because the old one (in front of which she stood) was broken (she broke it, while trying to install it).
It was her fourth month as an apprentice coach of Iron Tank' team, so she knew that the lack of a decent sink would not go unnoticed by Colonel Von Pushup.
,,What the heck do I do now, Larry?" she asked mop, which was leaning against the wall. When she turn her head in said direction, mop fell to the floor. ,,Shit."
For a moment, Helena considered the option of returning to South Africa, changing her name and forgetting about this whole farce called the Super League. But then she remembered she didn't have enough money to do this.
She sighed, stood up and started walking towards training base.
,,If anything happens, I will hit him directly in this beer belly" Helena talked to herself, trying to encourage herself. ,,Just like that."
Working for Iron Tanks was the best option for her among all job offers for other teams (Supa Strikas was too boring, even though her admiration for Coach, and on Hydra stadium she was this close to beat the shit out of Liquido). So it wasn't that unexpected that heads of the Super League decided to send her here... to Germany... in the Alps.
While leaving the building, she put on the fleece military jacket that Colonel once had given her when Helena had gone outside, unaware of the frost. Of course, at first he laughed at her and started telling his players some anecdote about why he always finds it funny when tourists come to this area, not expecting such cold weather. Present day was definitely warmer than mentioned one, but Helena still coudn't get used to temperatures of this region so while Iron Tank's players were wearing long sleeve shirts and Von Pushup himself wore a leather jacket with fur trim around the collar, Helena looked like as if she was going to climb mountains.
,,Fuck, my grandfather was a pilot in an English squadron 70 years ago, and I can't talk to my superior like with normal human being?" she thought, standing two steps away from her mentor.
Colonel Von Pushup with an almost smoked cigarette in his mouth and sunglasses on his nose, gave Helena the side eye.
,,The sink broke" she said with straight face.
Von Pushup started chocking on his cigarette. In a panic, Helena started hitting him on the back and then performed the Heimlich maneuver on him, as a result of which the wet cigarettebutt fell to the ground.
,,Vat?!" Von Pushup screamed, scratching his throat.
,,It was an accident!" Helena screamed back, doing pouty face.
,,How the hell did you break the sink?!" Von Pushup looked at Helena with shock on his face and a dead look in his eyes. ,,Verdammt! Was zum Teufel!"
,,I'm sorry. It was unintentionally!" Helena swore, rubbing her shoes on the ground.
,,Holy-"
Von Pushup looked up and down on Helena and just shook his head, running his hand over the bridge of his nose.
When he at first heard that they will sent him a new apprentice, he thought they will gave him some dodger, who would avoid work and probably not survive 3 days in The Fortress.
But they sent him Helena.
She immediately made a positive impression on him, because the first thing she did when she arrived on stadium was getting into a fight with Thor over the last energy drink in vending machine, but it still didn't change the fact that Helena apart from being very first apprentice Colonel truly liked, was also an underachiever.
Suddenly he felt hunger. Hell, he didn't eat anything since 5 am and this memory of the vending machine just made him even hungrier.
,,Missy Supervisor, we are gonna cook and I don't want to hear any mumbling" he said, tapping Helena hard on the shoulder. ,,This is your penance!" he reminded, when Helena opened her mouth with the intention of interjecting something of her own.
,,More like for both of us, sir" Helena announced, shrugging.
The corners of his mouth turned upwards. She is good.
His eyes turned towards the football players standing in place, closely watching his conversation with Helena.
,,And why are you don't do anything?! Faster, faster, faster!" he whistled with his fingers. ,,All of you will be fixing the sink that our Supervisor broke."
Her eyes widened and she looked at Von Pushup with terror.

Iron Tank's players have been trying to fix what their friend had done for half a day.
Would it be easier if Von Pushup (or at least Ginerva) just called a plumber? Probably yes, but everybody knew Von Pushup's methods, so as long as The Fortress was not flooded, there was no need to call professionals to fix anything.
,,You know that, it looks like a dead squirrel with sweat from our guys' shirts?" Helena asked Iron Tanks coach, while looking at pork knuckle that she and Von Pushup had been preparing for two hours.
Von Pushup cackled with big smile, slapping his knee.
,,I consider this as a confirmation, sir" she said with sweet smirk, while pecking out a peace of meat with a fork. ,,I'm not gonna eat this."
,,You will! You destroyed our sink, and...!"
Von Pushup couldn't finish his sentence, because after a while there was a loud crash, and water gushed out from the adjoining room.
Von Pushup's face blushed furiously, but before he could do anything, Helena handed him their knuckle.
,,You know what, sir-man? We better eat that while it's hot."
In anger, he took the first bite of his and Helena's meal.
She is a good kid.
,,All of them will eat cat food for the whole next week."
,,Of course, sir. Of course."

While you were with the kamaboko squad, all four of you were travelling down the mountain, you began shivering. The rainy weather last night definitely did not make things better, instead, it made the temperature up the mountains colder.
You didn't think inosuke was human, how could he survive this weather, he wore less clothing than you. Actually no, HE WAS SHIRTLESS !
You admired how inosuke didn't even think it was cold at all, perhaps he was used to this kind of weather, but not you. The demon ripped off you sleeves and some parts of your uniform.
If you were cold just now, your freezing now. You were about to turn into a popsicle when Tangiro, being the kind one here, offered his haori for you. Zenitsu, seeing this, also offered his to you ! How kind ! Unless you are a boy. He wouldn't give jackshit if you were a boy.
But you saw Zenitsu was also shivering from the cold just now, so you declined both of their offer kindly. But tangiro being tangiro, he refused and helped you to put on his haori and clasped both of your hands with his.
" The haori is something precious given to me as a symbol of my family, but I will give it to you without thinking about it, I am very happy to help and I would do absolutely anything to make others happy, even if that means that I would sacrifice even the only thing that reminds me of my family, the haori. " was what tangiro said.
But you were shocked hearing that, did he just say that he will GIVE you his haori or he just meant that he is lending you his haori. You were downright confused at this. But Zenitsu and inosuke just stared at the both of you, your hands in tangiro's hands. It was so warm...you thought. Your eyes gazed into his before he let your hands go and apologised if he had crossed any boundaries.
THIS BOY IS SO SWEET, PLEASE GIVE HIM A HUG !
Anyway, *cough cough*,
The four of you stopped at the house with the wisteria family crest. ( basically free hotel service )
After the old lady treated all four of your injuries and got all of you into new clothes, dinner was ready by then. After dinner, the four of you fooled around with nezuko of course.
When it was bed time and everyone was asleep, tangiro's bed was beside yours as he reached out his hand and tapped your shoulders.
You turned when you felt someone tap your shoulders only to be met with tangiros face near yours. He whispered to you if you wanted to go outside for some fresh air with him because he noticed that you couldn't sleep.
SUCH A SWEET BOY FR !!
Of course, you agreed to his offer and the both of you went outside quietly without disturbing zenitsu and inosuke from sleeping. When the both of you stared into the moon, sitting on the wooden floor, tangiro suddenly said " Y/n, I like you, do you feel the same ? " while he fidgeted around with his fingers.
Upon hearing that, your face became red, like very red. The words in your throat died out as you suddenly forgot how to speak. You've been friends with tangiro for over 4 long years, you didn't expect him to fall for you and actually feel the same for you. Your brain tried to think of what to say as you opened your mouth, but no words came out. You were a nervous wreck by now, face all red, palms sweaty, your fingers fidgeting around as well.
Tangiro could smell your nervousness and just said " just nod your head if you do, no need to say anything fancy or come up with long sentences, just do you. "
You nodded your head while averting your gaze upon hearing that. You were a blushing mess infront of tangiro as he just said " I see. " before pulling you back into bed and you guys slept together on one bed and cuddled to sleep.
Of course, the next morning, zenitsu freaked out as he yelled at tangiro for doing that to a girl. You saw him wink at you and you immediately understood. Your relationship and his, was a secret. You intend to keep it until he's ready to tell them.

SUMMARY: Majin Buu has been destroyed, and the Earth has known peace for close to a year now. Life hasn't been too peaceful for the person responsible for saving the world and the entire universe however, but when an ordinary woman meets him one day, things start to change.

She liked going for walks around the countryside. Some might think it’s foolish for a woman to live basically out in the middle of nowhere on her own, but the pros of she not having to deal with noisy neighbors or other human aggravations made it worthwhile. As did the beauty of nature that surrounded her.
It was a shame she couldn’t be completely independent from society though. She wasn’t knowledgeable enough on how to grow her own food or make her own clothing, and she was too dependent on luxuries like internet to go without them. Having heating, running water, and electricity was also very nice.
Her job out in the city thankfully wasn’t a huge pain to travel to or from, it paid well, and it itself wasn’t something that demanded she invest all of her time and energy into. She worked her absolute hardest during her shift, but outside of it, she gave anything related to work little attention.
Today was her day off, and she chose to spend it outside. Enjoying the pleasant weather and temperatures, she kept her eyes aimed at the sky, watching a group of birds pass by. There was something else in the sky that caught her attention, and after taking a moment to look closely, she could see it wasn’t another bird.
It was a person. She could make out that they had quite the impressive head of spiky hair.
She gaped up at them, unsure if she was just imagining things, but then they suddenly descended from the sky. Too nosy to just ignore what she witnessed, the woman quickly trekked towards the location they dropped down in. When she got there, she was face to face with someone she frankly thought she wouldn’t see again after their meeting a handful of days ago.
His face held a rather introspective expression, but it faded when he saw her appear over the hilltop. Recognition had his face lighten.
“You…weren’t you that apple woman from before?”
“Apple woman?” Of all things she could’ve expected him to call her, that wasn’t one of them. She tsked, crossing her arms. Now that he was standing this time instead of sitting, she took note that he was about a foot taller than her, but she wouldn’t allow that subtle intimidation factor to work.
“I have a name.”
“Oh?” That smirk of his was back, and one of his gloved hands came up to rest on his waist. The amusement that bled into his outlandish voice wasn’t missed by her.
“What is it then?”
She knew she should be cautious when it came to strangers. It was unwise to give your name to one, but in this instance, an idea came to her. She was far too curious about this man for her own good.
“I’ll tell you mine, if you tell me yours. First.”
“Aren’t you bold?”
He chuckled. Thanks to their close proximity to one another, behind his curled lips she could see the elongated canines of his teeth. A feeling of uncertainty had her confidence waver.
“Vegito.”
“…Huh?” She blinked.
“My name is Vegito.” He scrutinized her, for her reaction surely. He may have found it to be lack luster, as she only gave him an impassive stare and nothing more.
He was like a mystery box that just kept giving. She couldn’t determine if his name meant something specific in another language, or if it meant anything at all, but at least she wouldn’t forget it. Vegito…
“_____…”
His eyes widened ever so lightly. Before he could possibly comment on her name, she moved onto something more pressing.
“How were you doing that?”
“Doing what?”
“Floating in the sky.” Her gaze flicked up to it.
“Oh, that?” Smugness joined his playful demeanor, as he looked down at her with onyx eyes that sparkled with a certain light.
“I can fly. Nothing more to it.”
“…Fly?” This evoked a reaction. Shock erased her frown, and her arms went limp at her sides.
“Yes, fly. You know, what most birds and many insects can do.”
“I know what flying is.” She hissed, but unaffected by her irritation, Vegito snickered.
“How were you doing it?” Unlike flying birds and insects, he had no wings that she could see.
Silence was his initial response. The intensity of his gaze was truthfully unnerving, and even though she wouldn’t admit that, the woman felt herself starting to sweat.
“Before I can answer that…I must ask you this. Do you know what ki is?”
She wondered why that was relevant to the discussion, but she saw no harm in it.
“Yes. It’s supposed to be the life force of all living beings, or something like that.”
“You’re right.” Vegito was visibly surprised, not expecting her to be somewhat knowledgeable of the concept. She felt a small amount of pride at having managed to get that cocky look off of his face, if only briefly.
“Where did you learn of it?”
“I’ve looked into martial arts.” Pieces were starting to connect. Vegito wearing a gi made sense; he must have been a martial artist himself. It helped explained why he was so ripped at least.
“I don’t practice any though. Just read about some things that interested me.”
“I see….well, ki is the energy that our spirits naturally emit, but the strength of it varies from person to person. You can channel it, and use it in a variety of ways. One way, is by flying.”
That sounded far-fetched, but she wasn’t ignorant. Unlike a lot of humans out in the world, she knew there was more to things than what met the eye. Like this spiky-haired, fanged man here.
“How do you use ki to fly? Do you have it carry you?”
“Close. To cut a long explanation short: you force your ki underneath you to push yourself upwards. It generates lift, similar to what rotor blades do for a helicopter.”
“Really? That sounds…complicated…”
“Eh, it’s not. Anyone with sufficient ki and control of it can fly. Even children.”
The day she sees a child flying through the sky is the day she might question existence itself, but for Vegito, he was likely speaking from personal experience.
“I think you can learn how to fly. You’re strong enough at the bare minimum.”
“…Strong enough? Like, my ki is?” She quirked a brow. Vegito didn’t seem to be pulling her leg, but then again, she couldn’t be utterly sure. “How can you tell?”
His smirk returned with a strength that made her want to roll her eyes.
“I can sense ki.”
Sense it? How in the world was that done? Her head was starting to hurt.
“But I can teach you how to fly if you want _____. I’ve been pretty bored lately, and I don’t mind imparting knowledge onto someone else.”
He leaned forward, and the excitement upon his face was blatant. In the moment, he was like a child who couldn’t wait to do something fun. The abrupt innocence in his smile was…jarring, and she was at a lost for words. She was saved by a buzzing noise that cut through the air then, and an object vibrating in her pocket. She reached down into it to pull out her phone.
Checking the screen, she sees that she received a text message. It was from one of her co-workers, asking her to…come into the office in an hour? For a favor?
The rush of anger had her exhale a puff of air out of her nose.
 “I have to go. I’ll…take a rain check on that flying lesson.”
She turned on her heel to stomp away, furiously typing out a reply on her phone’s screen. Vegito watched her leave, slightly disappointed that his offer wasn’t accepted, but he shook if off. Standing straight, a hand went to his chin as he thought about one particular thing.
He was oddly motivated. This irritable lady has been a new spark, among his dull days…he felt like bothering her more, just for a little while longer.

This type encompasses humanoid-shaped vegetable creatures. Note that regular plants, such as those found in ordinary gardens and fields, lack Wisdom and Charisma scores and are not creatures, but objects, even though they are alive. A plant race has the following features.
Plants have the low-light vision racial trait. Plants are immune to all mind-affecting effects (charms, compulsions, morale effects, patterns, and phantasms). Plants are immune to paralysis, poison, polymorph, sleep effects, and stunning. Plants breathe and eat, but do not sleep, unless they want to gain some beneficial effect from this activity. This means that a plant creature can sleep in order to regain spells, but sleep is not required to survive or stay in good health.
Low-Light Vision (1 RP): Prerequisites: None; Benefit: Members of this race can see twice as far as a race with normal vision in conditions of dim light.
Cold Vulnerability (-2 RP): Prerequisites: Plant; Weakness: When exposed to Winter weather conditions for at least an hour, Strength checks are halved.

-Where does your race tend to live and why?
Pumpkinheads hail from the Autumn kingdom. They are not a particularly widespread race, preferring to stick to the temperate (between low 70s and low 40s with minimal snow and rain fall) forests and plains of the Autumn kingdom. While other races may struggle with the inability to grow many crops due to the climate, Pumpkinheads, being plants, can survive easily on what they can grow and forage in addition to their own pumpkin livestock. While they can process meat and dairy, Pumpkinheads prefer bones and blood to gain such nutrients.
It's only been within the past 30 years that Pumpkinheads have begun to travel and immigrate outside of the Autumn kingdom. They're still a rare sight outside the strip of land on the south side of the Darkwoods Mountains that comprises the Autumn kingdom.
-What does your race look like? How does the members' appearance help them adapt to their typical environment?

Pumpkinheads avoid traveling to much cooler temperatures due to being plant life. When temperatures become too cold, they will wither and enter a temporary hibernation state until warmed up. While they can die in this state, it would take many months of intense cold for the body to finally die. They dislike intense heat, but they can weather it better with additional water.
Pumpkinfolk possess magic, specifically the ability to trans-mutate other pumpkins. This is the origin of their pumpkin livestock, and how they reproduce. Pumpkinhead reproduction requires two Pumpkinheads and three plain pumpkins. One of these will need to be carved with a face, one will become the torso, and the other will be used to create the vines that form a Pumpkinfolk's limbs.
Pumpkinheads start life as the equivalent of a young human child, and age rapidly after creation. They reach physical adulthood after about 3 years, and their age of majority is 5. Pumpkinheads live for about 20 years after creation. An elderly Pumpkinhead will be softer as they near the end of their life. You can tell a Pumpkinfolk has died as the vines that form their limbs will shrivel up and fall from the pumpkins that form their body.
Pumpkinheads notably glow with dim light from inside their faces in darkness.
-What is your race's history? Does it have a creation myth? Were there pivotal events in the race's history?
The exact creation of Pumpkinheads can actually be tracked to the day. Originally, they were created by a powerful witch, Lavinia, who followed the teachings of Baba Yaga seeking to live unbothered while she attempted to gain greater powers. In order to deter those who would seek to destroy her, she created pumpkin golems to serve as her own private army. Settlements of the Autumn kingdom reported sightings of these pumpkins in the distance. Whether the witch was slain or simply moved on from the Autumn kingdom is lost to Pumpkinhead kind. Whatever happened, these golems were left behind. Left unchecked, the magic grew within the golems as they slowly gained their own sentience. Slowly, they began to form their own settlements.
Pumpkinheads today are recognized as a native race of the Autumn kingdom. They are one of only three races recognized as such (Strangelings (Catfolk, Batfolk, Ratfolk), Boogeymen, and Pumpkinheads).
The most famous Pumpkinhead was a Medium, Mosch Ambercup, who was often consulted by heros seeking to quest in the Darkwoods Mountains beyond the Autumn kingdom. Most notably, he foretold of an undead army attempting to march on Aureas from beyond the mountains in an attempt to seize a priceless artifact housed there: the awakened cauldron, Elias, used by the Pumpkinfolk and visitors alike to enhance potions. Thanks to this forewarning, the Pumpkinheads were able to send for help from nearby Strangeling and Human settlements and defeat the undead hordes. It was a difficult battle, many lives were lost, and over half of Aureas and several Pumpkinhead and Strangeling villages in the warpath were burned down. Mosch gained notoriety as a prophet, at which point, he disappeared, possibly captured, possibly dead, possibly just hiding in the mountains to avoid the pressure of being a celebrated prophet.
-What kinds of relationships does your race have with other races? Does it have allies? Competitors? Enemies? Hated foes?
Pumpkinheads are a non-confrontational race despite their origins. They tend to keep good relations with other races for trading purposes. They have very little contact with non native races aside from humans, who have settlements towards the outskirts of the Autumn kingdom. Their largest settlement is a Pumpkinhead city, Aureas, to the Northern part of the Aumun kingdom. Certain villages have had trouble with feral Strangelings or aggressive humans, but these are not widespread problems.
Following the Darkwoods Raid, the Pumpkinfolk, Strangelings, and a few Human settlements forged a loose government, the Golden Council, comprised of the leaders, or other representatives, of the various villages that meet yearly.

Pumpkinfolk tend to favor fighter and ranger with a smaller population of wizards, clerics, and gunslingers. There are a few notable alchemists, specifically in Aureas.

A record number of Americans died from heat last year.
A new study analyzing federally reported data since 1999 reveals that as the planet warms, heat-related deaths are on the rise in the U.S. In 2023, more Americans died from heat than in any other year over the past two decades, according to findings published Monday. Last year was also the hottest on record globally, marking another grim milestone in the ongoing climate change crisis.

The study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), reported 2,325 heat-related deaths in 2023, though researchers acknowledge that this figure is likely an undercount. Even after adjusting for the growing and aging U.S. population, the death toll remained alarmingly high.
"The warming trajectory and climate change we're experiencing are now visibly reflected in rising death rates," said Jeffrey Howard, lead author and associate professor of public health at the University of Texas at San Antonio, in an interview with USA TODAY. "This is something we hadn't previously been able to quantify."

Howard, along with researchers from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Maryland and Pennsylvania State University, analyzed death certificate data from 1999 to 2023. Deaths were counted if heat was listed as either an underlying or contributing cause.
The number of reported deaths remained relatively steady until around 2016, when they began to rise sharply. Howard, who studies the health impacts of extreme weather, described this trend as a "hockey stick." This analogy, often used to depict the steep rise in global temperatures due to climate change, reflects the sudden and alarming increase in heat-related deaths in recent years.
Howard's study indicates that the rising human toll of heat-related deaths mirrors the broader pattern of increasing global temperatures. A key metric is the age-adjusted death rate per 100,000 people, which has surged compared to the early 2000s, regardless of age or population size.
The rate has accelerated in recent years. In 2022, 1,722 people died at an adjusted rate of 0.47. But in 2023, there were 603 more deaths, with the adjusted rate climbing to 0.63, the highest ever recorded.
These deaths weren't evenly distributed across the country. In an interview, Howard noted that the vast majority occurred in traditionally hot regions like Arizona, California, Nevada, and Texas.
The study has limitations, particularly in how local governments classify heat-related deaths, which suggests the actual number may be undercounted. Additionally, the data could be skewed as public awareness of the dangers of extreme heat increases. The study also didn't specifically analyze vulnerable groups, such as those without air conditioning, individuals who live or work outdoors, and people with underlying health conditions—all of whom face a higher risk of serious illness or death from heat.
Heat is often referred to as the silent killer, explained Sameed Khatana, an assistant professor of medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and a cardiologist at the Philadelphia VA Medical Center, who has researched heat-related death reporting.

Khatana noted that officials are increasingly aware of the role heat plays when completing death certificates. “There’s a growing recognition of the subtleties highlighted in research over the past few decades," he said.
Researchers, including Khatana, have previously advocated for better reporting of heat-related deaths.
Ashley Ward, director of the Heat Policy Innovation Hub at Duke University's Nicholas Institute for Energy, Environment and Sustainability, highlighted that how heat is attributed on death certificates varies across counties. “We need to develop guidance and standards for determining when heat is a contributing factor,” she said.
The study published Monday also urged local officials to consider investing in hydration stations, public cooling centers, and additional buildings with air conditioning.
In 2024, summer heat continues unabated. While it’s unclear how this year’s heat-related deaths compare to previous years, recent months have seen multiple heat waves across the country.
For instance, Phoenix has set a record for the number of days exceeding 100 degrees, with the city’s Sky Harbor Airport reaching 91 consecutive days of such temperatures, according to Mark O'Malley, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service office in Phoenix.
In July, California and New Hampshire recorded their hottest July on record, while 19 other states also experienced one of their top 10 warmest Julys, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

There are risks with genetically-modified mosquitoes as I have warned here for years.
Whether or not genetically-modified mosquitoes caused the increase in dengue fever cases will be a topic of scientific debate. But obviously they did not cure the problem.
Whether any of the genetically-modified mosquitoes were intentionally also released in Peru is not clear–but as Peru shares a long jungle border with Brazil, it is reasonable to conclude that some genetically-modified mosquitoes crossed the border one way or the other (the other being in planes or autos, etc.).

According to the AP (A Bill Gates-tied mosquito project is not responsible for recent US malaria cases | AP News), the cases of malaria that have recently popped up in the United States were NOT related to Bill Gates, his funding of “mosquito research” related disease prevention (Gates-Funded World Mosquito Program Engages in Gain-of-Function Research – The American Spectator | USA News and Politics), or Oxitec’s (another Gates supported company) release of genetically modified mosquitoes for the past several years in Florida where the outbreaks occurred (see the previous two articles).
The AP has noted that the Gates Foundation does fund malaria work and GMO mosquitoes but states it’s funding for Oxitec’s genetically altered mosquitoes that are being released in Florida (where those mosquitoes are released) does not include any modifications related to malaria, and so they could not be the cause. …

To claim that since the intent of the genetic-modification was not to increase susceptibility to malaria does not mean that could not have been the result. Humans simply do not know all the consequences, intended or otherwise, when they genetically-alter living things. While that does not mean that the Gates mosquitoes resulted in malaria in the USA– the fact is that it is in the USA now.
That said, the release of other genetically-modified mosquitoes had been tried years before in Brazil, but the results were not as the proponents hoped:

GENETICALLY modified mosquitoes that were designed by scientists to help populations decrease are actually thriving.
This is according to new research that claims the plan to create gene-hacked mosquitoes that have offspring which die immediately has spectacularly backfired and now scientists don’t know what will happen next.
The modified mosquitoes were released in Jacobina in Brazil and were supposed to mix with the local population and decrease numbers with their weak offspring genetics.
Although the wild population did plummet for a short while, 18 months later it was right back up again.
This is mostly concerning because scientists think the new ‘super mosquitoes’ have properties that might make them harder to kill.
Research about the pests has been published in the journal Nature Scientific Reports. …
Mosquitoes like the Aedes aegypti variety that was edited can carry dangerous diseases like yellow fever, Zika virus and Malaria.
This is why efforts are being made to reduce their numbers.
However, now traces of the genetically modified genes have been found in the natural population.
This means they are successfully interbreeding. …
The offspring of the gene-hacked mosquitoes and the natural ones are thought to be more robust but whether they pose a threat is unknown.

So, at least some scientists have been concerned about “the unanticipated outcome.” Having mosquitoes that are “more robust” makes them harder to kill and, thus tends to increase their longevity.
Well, I anticipated something just like this when I reported about the release of GMOs mosquitoes on July 28, 2018. Here are some of my posted warnings.
Mosquitoes can carry and spread many diseases.
But releasing genetically-modified ones into the wild presents unknown risks.
One assumption that scientists have tended to make with genetically-modified organisms (GMOs) is that if they do not see any dangers, then there are none. That is foolish, yet that continues to be the view of the pro-GMO crowd.
While there certainly are risks associated with contracting the Zika virus (see Zika is more dangerous than many thought; USA has its first Zika death), this ‘solution’ poses risks to various parts of the ecosystem as well as the possibility that some of the offspring produced will have greater longevity as opposed to greatly reduced longevity.
The vast quantity of mosquito offspring increases the possibility that there will be some that have the opposite traits that the GMO crowd is hoping to get. And if this occurs, this could cause much greater problems than the GMO ‘solution’ was supposed to fix. …

GMOs are very dangerous precisely because scientists CANNOT ANTICIPATE all the potentially negative outcomes. IT IS NOT SCIENTIFICALLY POSSIBLE FOR TO KNOW ALL THE RISKS, yet these experiments with genetically-modified mosquitoes in the wild continue.
And while I suspect that malaria will be brought under control for a while, and genetically-modified mosquitoes could play a role, the fact is that super-mosquitoes are a health-risk.
Mosquitoes, GMO or otherwise, have major potential to spread pestilences and cause pandemics.
Notice some of what Jesus warned would happen prior to the start of the Great Tribulation during the beginning of sorrows:
7…And there will be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in various places. 8 All these are the beginning of sorrows. (Matthew 24:7-8)
11 And there will be great earthquakes in various places, and famines and pestilences; and there will be fearful sights and great signs from heaven. (Luke 21:11)
(Perhaps it should be mentioned that contrary to the views of some Protestant prophecy preachers, the fourth horseman of the apocalypse is NOT Islam, but has to do with death and pestilence: see Fourth Horseman of the Apocalypse).
Mosquitoes are pests, as far as humans are concerned, and can spread many diseases.
Bible prophecy shows that the situation with pestilence is expected to worsen:
7 When He opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth living creature saying, “Come and see.” 8 So I looked, and behold, a pale horse. And the name of him who sat on it was Death, and Hades followed with him. And power was given to them over a fourth of the earth, to kill with sword, with hunger, with death, and by the beasts of the earth. (Revelation 6:7-8)
Mosquitoes, and the diseases associated with them, are consistent with the “beasts of earth” that Revelation 6 is discussing.
Genetically modified mosquitoes can be harder to kill than natural ones and pose dangerous, and seemingly prophesied, risks.

There are many legends and myths surrounding mermaids, the charming half-human, half-fish creatures that are said to live in the depths of the ocean. One of the most well-known characteristics of mermaids is their irresistible urge to explore and swim in rivers and streams.
However, it may come as a surprise to some that mermaids are not able to fulfill this desire in all rivers and streams. Specifically, in the case of sidestreams - smaller tributaries that feed into larger rivers - mermaids face unique challenges that make them inaccessible for their urges.
One of the main reasons is simply due to size. Mermaids, being creatures of the sea, are adapted to swimming in large bodies of water. Many sidestreams, on the other hand, are too narrow and shallow for a mermaid to comfortably move around in.
In addition, sidestreams are often surrounded by dense vegetation and underwater obstacles such as fallen logs and rocks. These can pose a danger to a mermaid's delicate fins and make it difficult for them to maneuver and explore.
Another factor that makes sidestreams inaccessible for mermaids is water quality. As creatures that thrive in clean, clear ocean waters, mermaids may struggle to adapt to the murky, polluted waters that are present in many sidestreams. This can not only affect their overall health, but also their ability to navigate and enjoy the body of water.
Furthermore, sidestreams are often connected to larger rivers, which can bring in strong currents and additional challenges for mermaids. These currents, along with other natural factors such as water temperature and weather conditions, can make it difficult for mermaids to safely explore the sidestreams.
Human activity also plays a significant role in making sidestreams inaccessible for mermaids. Many sidestreams are located in heavily populated areas where human interference, like pollution and development, have greatly impacted the environment. This can make it unsafe and uncomfortable for mermaids to swim and relax in these areas.
Lastly, due to their elusive nature and the lack of scientific evidence of their existence, mermaids may also face the challenge of not being able to find suitable sidestreams to explore. The locations where mermaids are reported to be sighted are often in remote and hard-to-access areas, making it unlikely that they will come across a suitable sidestream.
In conclusion, while mermaids may have a natural urge to explore and swim in rivers and streams, sidestreams present unique challenges that make them inaccessible for this purpose. From size and water quality to human interference and elusive locations, there are various reasons why mermaids may not be able to fulfill their desires in sidestreams. However, this does not diminish the magic and fascination surrounding these elusive creatures.
