December reads!
I read a lot more this month! (Thank god for Christmas break.)
Archivist Wasp by Nicole Kornher-Stace: A fantasy/dystopian story about a young priest-archivist who captures ghosts to study and destroy them–until she finds one who wants her help and they end up on a journey through the underworld together. The world-building in this had some really neat original mythology blending fantasy and sci-fi and I liked that it’s a novel about complex, intense platonic cross-gender friendships (it’s sooo rare to see male-female friendships given the same amount of depth as romance and this book was very refreshing on that front) and I’ll definitely be reading more from this author.
How Moon Fuentez Fell in Love With the Universe by Raquel Vasquez Gillibrand: I really picked this up on a whim because the cover is really pretty and the main character is a twin–it’s about a girl who lives in the shadow of her famous social media influencer sister until she’s invited along on tour and begins to learn how to love herself. There’s some tinges of magical realism among the explorations of religious purity culture and body image and a very slow-burning romance.
Hellblazer vol. 2: The Devil You Know by Jamie Delano: Dude this was fucked up!
Hench by Natalie Zina Walschots: I finally read this on the recommendation of my sister and WOWWWWW it was intense! Follows Anna, a low-level employee of a supervillain who is horribly injured by a superhero and decides to calculate the cost of the accumulated damage superheroes inflict on the world. Super interesting exploration of collateral damage and good vs. evil
Boy in Bloom by Nina Powers: A young adult coming-of-age/gay romance about a boy who falls for his reckless roommate while dealing with the stress of senior year of high school and his strict principal father’s high expectations. This was written by a teenager and it shows–and I don’t mean that in a bad way, just that is really captured the stress and turmoil of trying to prepare for life after high school.
Marvel’s Voices: Identity # 1 (anthology so I’m not listing all the contributors): A collection of short comics about Asian American Marvel superheroes by Asian authors and artists. Quick but fun, made me want to catch up on Silk and Ms. Marvel comics.
A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder by Holly Jackson: Young adult thriller about a girl who decides to solve a mystery most people in her town dismissed as open and shut years ago. It was very engaging and I enjoyed the mixed-media format, but some of the twists and the fact that the main character didn’t face that any consequences for her crossing-the-line-in-the-name-of-justice actions felt a little unrealistic?
Eternals vol. 1 by Kieron Gillen: I literally no nothing about the Eternals and haven’t seen the movie, but I thought Kieron Gillen was a great fit for a comic about a bunch of dramatic immortal assholes trying to solve a murder mystery.
The Refrigerator Monologues by Catherynne M. Valente: Reread! A collection of stories commenting on the trend of dead and abused girlfriends of superheroes in comics. Valente’s writing is rage-fueled and great.
Hellions vol. 1 by Zeb Wells: Reread! Suicide Squad but make it X-Men.
Comfort Me With Apples by Catherynne M. Valente: Oh, this was great! Very eerie novella about a woman who has the perfect life and the perfect husband–or does she? I really don’t want to say too much about this because it’s a very speedy read and I really watching the heart of the story emerge.
Hellions vol. 2 by Zeb Wells: Okay, now I see why everyone likes this comic so much, I really enjoyed the chaos of this volume. Also Kwannon my beloved ≤3
The Secret Lives of Church Ladies by Deesha Philyaw: Hi yes mark the calendar Lulu enjoyed an adult literary fiction book about people having sex and figuring out relationships, this is incredibly rare. A collection of short stories focused on flawed, realistic Black women navigating sexuality and religion.
Being Seen: One Deafblind Woman’s Fight to End Ableism by Elsa Sjunneson: A memoir by a Deafblind woman. I picked this up on my sister’s recommendation and really liked it–very eye-opening, snarky, angry, and contains some interesting insights into portrayals of disability in media.
The Haunting of Tram Car 015 by P. Djéli Clark: Final read of the year! It’s a novella set in the same magical steampunk Cairo of A Dead Djinn in Cairo and I enjoyed it, the world-building is neat and it’s cool to see it get expanded on more and more. (I’m reading A Master of Djinn right now and also enjoying it.)

My Favorite Art Books of 2019
This year I reviewed 62 art books, a dip again from the 74 I did last year, and 82 back in 2017. I attribute the reasons for the falling numbers to a combination of reduced readership for my blog ( less readers = less conversion, which unfortunately gives me less resources to procure books ) as well as the comparatively smaller number of interesting Japanese art books that I felt was worth picking up.
Despite the reduced quantity, there’s still plenty of great art books that were published in 2019, and these particular 10 are my favorites. I hope you’ll find something of interest in the list, and here’s to a happy 2020 ! –
1) Spider-Man : Into The Spiderverse – The Art Of The Movie
Published in late December 2018, this book narrowly missed my fav art books list of 2018, so I’m including it here for posterity.
Winner of the 2018 Academy Award for Best Animated Film, and a movie I’m super proud to have worked on, this book explores the stunning concept art created for the film, with a surplus of sketches, storyboards, character/environment designs as well as color scripts. The beautiful images that you see in the film were greatly informed by the amazing visuals the concept artists created, so if you like the movie, you’ll the art work in this book too.

2) Tokyo At Night – The Artworks of Mateusz Urbanowicz II
Tokyo based Polish illustrator Mateusz Urbanowicz‘s first art book Tokyo Storefronts was one of my favorites in 2018, and he’s back again this year strong with Tokyo At Night, a collection of delightful watercolor illustrations that explores the the moody nocturnal sights of the sprawling, skyscraper topped metropolis saturated with neon lights, mysterious back alleys, wet cityscapes lit by reflections and more. It’s a stunning art book from start to end, and I love it.

3) Real Size – Katsuya Terada Art Book
Renowned Japanese illustrator Katsuya Terada’s Real Size is a superb collection of his black marker art works, many of which were created during his live drawing events. The title refers to the print size of the reproductions which are at 100% scale of the original art works, large mural pieces which are cropped and presented across several pages in the book. The complete drawings are also included, scaled down to 16% of the original size.

4) Making Solo: A Star Wars Story
Industrial Light & Magic Presents : Making Solo: A Star Wars Story is a handsomely photographed making of book by Rob Bredow, the SVP, executive creative director, and head of Industrial Light & Magic.
As a child, the production photographs of the AT-ATs from The Empire Strikes Back inspired Rob to become a filmmaker, and in meticulously documenting the progress of the production on Solo he hopes to do the same – to inspire the next generation of artists, engineers and storytellers.
The beautiful set photographs gives readers an intimate glimpse into the journey that Solo took from pre-production, production, and post-production, fully documenting how this film came to the big screen.
This book is a great companion for the equally fantastic Art Of Solo – A Star Wars Story, which focuses on the concept art behind the film ( and incidentally one of my fav art books of 2018 ).

5) The Idol – Sushio
Sushio is a Japanese animator/illustrator who started his career as an animator at studio Gainax for the TV animation series Neon Genesis Evangelion. After working on many renowned anime series and movies such as One Piece, he took on the character design work for the anime hit series Kill La Kill, catapulting his status in the animation world.
This book is his long-awaited first commercial collection that looks back over his career to date. It features notable works from Kill La Kill, Gurren Lagann, Momoiro Clover Z, along with a panel illustration of Anime Matsuri 2015, his work overseas for an annual anime convention held in Texas, and much more. This book also features Sushio’s illustrations of AKIRA: two original illustrations depicting the imaginary post-AKIRA world, which was officially approved by Katsuhiro Otomo himself, and two illustrations taken from the Tribute to Otomo art book.

6) The Making Of Alien
The Making Of Alien is an in-depth and comprehensive book charting the complete story of how Alien was made, featuring new interviews with Ridley Scott and other production crew, and including many rarely-seen photos and illustrations from the Fox archives.
I already own several excellent books on the making of the Alien films, Alien The Archive and Aliens – The Set Photography just to name a few, but this huge hard cover volume explores plenty of material that I’m only seen for the first time, most notably the huge collection of “Ridleygrams”; detail storyboards draw by the director himself, as well as on set production photographs and a giant depository of concept art pieces by several artists like Eliot Scott, Chris Foss and Ron Cobb.
But the book isn’t simply your regular coffee-table book glossed over with just pictures and images. The small print text accompanying the visuals are cramped with detailed production stories and are more scholarly than just a casual read.
As a big fan of the franchise I’m absolutely delighted with this book, and I really look forward to the upcoming Making Of Aliens book, also by J.W. Rinzler.

7) Children Of The Sea Background Art Book
Children Of The Sea ( Kaiju No Kodomo ) is a Japanese animated film directed by Watanabe Ayumu and produced by Studio 4°C, based on the highly acclaimed manga by Daisuke Igarashi. The art direction and background art is supervised by Kimura Shinji, who previously bought us the amazing background art in Tekkon Kinkreet and Steamboy.
Published in the same format at the fantastic Shiro ( White ) background art book for Tekkon Kinkreet, this hardcover volume is bursting at the seams with stunning background art painted by Kimura Shinji, with some 250 pages of art work.

8) Hellboy – 25 Years Of Covers
I enjoy every page and panel of Mike Mignola’s Hellboy comics, but the art covers he has illustrated for the comic are something special; often drawn with just that extra, delicate detail. Over the years as the volumes of Hellboy and the shared universe BPRD grew it became harder and harder to keep track of all the covers that he has illustrated, and I started hoping for an art book that is dedicated to just the covers. Hellboy – 25 Years Of Covers is exactly that.
This hardcover volume features more than 150 full-page cover pieces from Mike Mignola, Richard Corben, Duncan Fegredo and more, all neatly collected for easy viewing and enjoyment.

9) Ikegami Ryoichi Art Works
An art book that is long overdue, Ikegami Ryoichi Art Works is a superb collection of illustrations from the famed manga artist of Crying Freeman, Sanctuary and Mai The Psychic Girl.
Running at a sumptuous 288 pages, the art book is split into 2 separate volumes, with one book dedicated to male characters, and the other female. While a good portion of both volumes feature illustrations from Crying Freeman, likely the artist’s most famous work; there’s still a good spread of content from Ikegami’s other mangas, and this is the biggest collection of his art work published yet.

10) Akira Art Of Wall Art Book
This book arrived just in time to be included in this year’s list, and also made for a very splendid Christmas present.
Four sets of giant Akira murals ( see the pictures I took here, here and here ) used to decorate the construction walls of the Parco Shibuya shopping mall in Tokyo from the period of 2017-2019 are fully reproduced in this stunning boxset. The panoramic art work looks spectacular when fully extended, and would immediately class up any wall lucky enough to be adorned with it. I think this might very well be my favorite art book of the year, among all my favorites.

Besides the 10 books that I’ve listed above, some other noteworthy mentions include Marvel Monograph: The Art Of Esad Ribic, Perfect Blue Storyboard Book ( New Edition ), The Art Of Kazuchika Kise and Bram Stoker’s Dracula – Mike Mignola Graphic Novel ( B&W edition ).
You can take a look at the full list of 2019’s art book reviews here, and I also recommend my favorite art books of 2018/2017/2016/2015/2014/2013/2012.
If you need help with ordering on Amazon Japan, the FAQs below will guide you through, step by step.
One small request – Due to the falling readership of my blog, I’ve been finding it harder and harder to purchase more books for review. I kindly ask that you use any of the Amazon purchase links in this post or anywhere on my blog to buy books; it won’t cost you anything, but the affiliate fee I earn as a result will allow me to continue reviewing more books. Thank you !
And lastly, I’ll love you hear about your favorite art books this year too, if you have any to share. Happy New Year !

Printing your comic
Part I: Presswork vocabulary
“If it walks like a printing press staff, and talks like a printing press staff, then it must be...an aspiring comic artist!”
So, you went through all of the organization phase, worked really hard, followed every tip on project management and now you have your beautiful comic (or maybe another kind of art book) ready to print. But, how to do so? When we’re at the edge of this crucial moment, most of us realize we need a little help and basic knowledge to guide us, so today we’re going to talk about the key terms and process you need to be familiar with.
First of all, most print shops will be able to help and solve some of your problems, you can trust at least someone in the staff has the knowledge to solve the most common complications around printing a comic. The reason I start by saying this is that printing anything can be a very stressful process, full of re-works and need for quick trouble-shooting, and you might feel tempted to be angry at the print shop crew. What I want to make clear from the start is that the printing machine itself can be tricky, sometimes you’ll export in the wrong format and get mad at the print shop, and sometimes people will in fact stitch your pages wrong. Take a deep breath, and chill.
If you’re printing, chances are you’re going to take this material to a convention and you have a deadline, and I also acknowledge how stressful this can be, so please be aware that your emotions might get the best of you, which is why I want to help you to be able to communicate as best as you can with your printer. In order to do so, let’s get familiar with some crucial terms:
Printing vocabulary
Trim line: This is a line that indicates the final size and format of your page. Everything outside this line will be cut off the paper sheet, and everything inside of it will be on your final book. The digital file you’ll be sending to the print shop will be a little bigger than the final book, because you also have your bleed.
Bleed area: It’s an area which is still within the paper sheet during the printing process, but is outside your trim mark. That means, this area will be trimmed, cut off your final book. So, why is it relevant? The bleed is a precaution for the possible dislocation of the paper sheet as it is going through the cutting machine. You basically extend your art just a few millimeters outside the actual page to be sure you won’t end up with ugly undesired white lines at the edge of your comic pages. The recommended bleed size is between 3 and 6 mm, but you can always ask your print shop for the suggested setting for their machine.
Slug area: So, your art is inside the trim lines, it extends a little bit outside of them to create your bleed area, and even outside that area, we finally have the slug area. Slug area is a good thing to have and to be able to communicate clearly to your printer, though not everyone does so. You can inform the size of your bleed area via e-mail or other method, so this is not necessary, but let’s just go through it: the slug area is the area outside the page containing all of the marks and information necessary to properly cut your page to it’s final format. Trim marks and bleed marks are indicated here with specific iconographies, which we will talk about in next week’s article.
For many print shops, this is not necessary and you can inform such formats in their own website as you upload your artwork. Always, always ask questions and communicate when in doubt.
Gutter: It’s the inside space closest to the books spine, the middle of the book once you open it. This is more relevant for books with over 200 pages, but it’s worth the acknowledge in any way. Simply take in consideration that once your pages are bind together, this space where the two pages meet is slightly compressed, squeezed together and subject to a little deformation due to perspective. Most importantly, do not put any relevant art and especially texts in this area closer to where the pages meet: you don’t want people to have to force your book open in order to read a character’s speech bubble. If you have a really big book, and/or heavy paper pages, you might need to make a slight adjustment in the gutter along the pages of your book. Talk to your printer staff and follow their recommendations. (This is a very specific topic, so if you need help here, just feel free to contact me!)
Safe area/danger zone: Remember that the bleed area is there for when the paper is possibly cut a little further outside the edge of your page? Well, sometimes the opposite might occur: your art might get trimmed just a little more on the inside of these predicted lines. In order to prevent mutilation of your beautiful comic pages, you can create a margin for your danger zone: don’t put anything crucial or texts between the trim line and a safe margin, about 6mm inside the trim lines.
Fore edge: Another non-crucial term, but useful to keep in mind in order to provide a good reading experience for your reader. This might sound logical, but remember the person reading your comic will have to hold it in their hands. While doing so, their thumbs are probably gonna grab this outside area of your comic page, leaving it a little more damaged over time, and also their hand will partially cover this area while they’re reading, so just plan this little thing ahead: avoid putting crucial information too close to the fore edges!
Saddle stitch: This is the most common format for comics, and you’re probably already familiar with it: all pages are attached together by two (or sometimes three) staples in the middle of the book. This is a more affordable format, and it’s generally recommended for shorter stories, with not many pages. Big, bulky books sometimes cannot be stitched together just with that, and so they need a different binding method. Advantages: it’s quick and efficient, and also more affordable.
Perfect binding: In this format, the entire volume of pages will be distributed into smaller sections, called booklets. These booklets will then be attached together at the book’s spine with a strong, but flexible glue, along with the cover. This method generally creates a beautiful rectangular shaped spine, in which you can add your book’s title or other art. The size of this spine will vary according to the number of pages and chosen paper. You can guess-timate it, but always contact your printer for more trustworthy estimatives. Advantages: it looks just so beautiful! But also, it can accomodate a big volume with more pages than the saddle stitch would be able to. Also allows hardcovers, which are really pretty and offers a lot of mechanical resistance.
Cover: This might seem a little obvious, but let's cover all the bases (see what I did here?) just to be sure. Your cover for a saddle stitch will be composed of front cover and backcover. That’s two “pages”, right? But also keep in mind that in saddle stitching, the inner part of the same paper sheet used for the cover also counts as cover, making it have four pages in your file. This will be relevant later when we talk about page count, so hold on to that. If you’re printing hardcover, you’ll also have two end pages to attach this cover material to the inside pages of the book. You might also want to have a flap, which is an extension of the cover that folds inside and can serve as a page marker to your reader. Always ask your printing staff about those possibilities and what they imply on.
Now it’s time to close your file for printing! Let’s talk about some terms that generally puzzles us while preparing the file to the printing shop, and we will start with a very important concept: color!
CMYK and RGB: most of us are familiar with those acronyms, but if you’re more into just creating digital art, you’re probably not very sure about what they imply. Let’s take a look at what distinguishes those two different color languages. CMYK stands for cyan, magenta, yellow and black (which is “key”), the four primary pigment colors used for printing. RGB stands for red, green and blue, the three primary light colors that can produce any other visible color on your screen.
Why are those colors sets different, if they both should be primary? Let’s break this down because it might be a little confusing at the beginning: CMYK is pigment, and RGB is light. That means CMYK is subtractive color, and RGB is additive. That means, the more you mix pigments, the darker it gets, until it reaches black. Black means no light is reflected, so you’re subtracting light by adding pigment. Are you following me? Now, RGB is pretty much the opposite: the more light colors you add, the brighter it gets, until it reaches complete white, where all the light is reflected, making in an additive process: the more colors, the more light. Take a look at it:
So, why should this matter to us, comic creators? Because you’re probably making your comics digitally, or coloring them digitally or at the very least editing them and giving it final touch ups on your computer screen. At the moment you create a digital file, in order for it to appear on your screen, it must be converted to RGB, the language of additive color which your computer uses to convey image to your eyes. That means you’re probably gonna work with an RGB file but print a CMYK file. Proper and careful conversion of one to another is the key, and will take about it on the next section of this article.
Now you understand how color works on printed paper, but what kind of paper are we talking about? These are some of the common varieties of paper and questions you will be asked when printing your material:
Paper grammage: This is the measurement of the paper weight, not it’s thickness. The distinction is important because due to the ratio of cellulose and cotton of some types of paper, they might look thicker, but actually be lighter, or the other way around. To put it simply: grammage measures the weight, in grams, of a sheet of one square meter of said paper. (For US folks, sometimes this measurement is made based on pounds) Overall, 90 gsm is very light and does not make much of an impression, but anything from 115 gsm on should do the trick. Heavier paper makes a good impression and makes the entire book more resistant and aesthetically pleasant, but there are a few things to consider before you go 300 gsm on the entire book! First off, remember what grammage means: you’re making your comic book heavier when you choose a higher grammature, so if you intend on mailing it, considerer this details and plan ahead for a more expensive shipping cost. Thicker pages also mean more wear and tear on the folding of the paper, so if you intend to have your inner pages as thick as 150 gsm on, you might need some coating and lamination to make sure your pages won’t get prematurely outworn.
Coating: Most printer shops will also give you options for the paper finishing, sometimes varying depending on what grammature you’ve chosen (very light grammature such as 75 gsm might not be suitable for coating). The paper finishing gives it a final texture quality, and the options available are generally gloss, silk and uncoated. The gloss finish, as the name suggests, gives your art a very shiny glossy aspect, similar to magazines and printed photographs. It can get really reflexive, so beware. A paper with silk finishing, also sometimes referred to as a matt finish, gets a more velvety texture, soft to the touch and not as reflexive. Personally, my favorite to print comics, since the printing is vibrant enough to convey the desired colors, but it’s not reflexive enough to get in the way of reading and appreciating the panels. The third option is simply not to have it coated at all, leaving the natural paper and paint texture. This is generally the more accessible choice, but it comes with its drawbacks: quick detratition of the pages due to lack of protection from the regular manipulation of the book. The colors will also look a little more dull without any coating.
Paper size: A very crucial part of printing your comic is deciding what size will it have in the final format. In fact, that is something you should be planning from the start. Adapting and A4 size comic page to a US standard comic format can be incredibly tiring and time consuming, so why not make the pages already conceiving their final print format? Here are the most common printing formats for comics: International paper size (A Series paper size), US standard comic size and manga size (B series paper size).
A series: Comic are generally printed in A4 size, or 21 x 29,7 cm (8.27" x 11.69")
US standard comic size: 6.63" x 10.24" (16.84 x 26.01 cm)
B series: Manga are generally printed in B6 size, or 12.8 × 18.2 cm (5.04" × 7.17")
Remember to have the final format in mind when thumbnailing and executing your pages. It will save you a lot of time when you decide to print your comic!
That’s it for today! This topic was getting a little to long so I've decided to split it into two weeks articles. In this first one, we cover the basic vocabulary and terms we need in order to communicate with our print staff and understand what’s going on. Next week, we’ll be talking about really fixing troubles, exporting files and how to bring this comic fully to life.

Seed of Destruction: Addenda
“Mike Mignola’s Hellboy” 2 x 4 page stories, both with same credits
Plot & Art: Mike Mignola | Script: John Byrne | Letters: uncredited - though comics.org lists them as Mike Mignola for word balloons & sound effects / John Byrne for typeset
Colours: Matthew Hollingsworth, colours added for the collection, originally published in black and white.
Originally published by Dark Horse in San Diego Comic-Con Comics #2 | August 1993 & Krause Publications in Comics Buyer’s Guide #1070 | 20 May 1994
Collected in Hellboy - Volume 1: Seed of Destruction | Hellboy Library Edition - Volume 1 | Hellboy Omnibus - Volume 1: Seed of Destruction
Plot Summary:
In the first story, Hellboy battles Anubis at a gas station.
In the second, Hellboy rescues a woman kidnapped by mad Nazi scientist Herman von Klempt and his pet gorilla Brutus.
Reading Notes:
(Note: pagination is solely for the stories themselves and are not indicated anywhere in the issues or collections. The story break between the two occurs at page 5.)
pg. 1 - The mixture of Americana, Old West, Egypt, and Nazi Germany as mentioned by Hellboy in the narration is impressive and overall indicative of a lot that we’re going to find in the forthcoming Hellboy stories. This series is kind of a melting pot for old and new forms of storytelling, along with a deep syncretization of multiple mythologies and belief systems. For a first panel in the Hellboy universe, this is very telling for what’s in store.
pg. 2 - I like the theme of “nothing as it seems” presented here as the seemingly harmless puppy dog turns into a giant dog monster that Hellboy claims is maybe Anubis.
Anubis: As Hellboy states, Egyptian god of mummification. Mostly represented as a jackal god, though scholars and archaeologists are now claiming that he has the head of an African golden wolf. He was the keeping of the rituals of embalming and a gatekeeper for the realm of the dead. Also, the Denver International Airport.
pg. 3 - I really like the layouts for this story. I find them more indicative of what we’ll see later as Mignola develops an even more deliberate tone and style for the main Hellboy stories. As I’ve said earlier, it reminds me a lot of P. Craig Russell’s work.
pg. 5 - This splash page opening up the second story is just fun. Just the visuals of a Nazi scientist as a head in a jar and a gorilla with metal spikes sticking out of its neck are entertaining. It’s ridiculous, but it works within the logic of Hellboy.
Also, the image of the woman, though definitely in Mignola’s style, shows influence to me of Kevin Nowlan’s work. This is a well done piece of art, and one of my favourites of early Hellboy.
pg. 6-8 - Like the first story, this is much a showcase for the artwork and the action. It’s fun.
pg. 1-8 - One of the things I like most about these two stories is the incorporation of the lettering. The narration boxes and many of the word balloons bleed into the gutter as though they’re part of the panels or cut-outs from them. I love this style, reminding a lot of many of the times that some of my favourite letterers like John Workman and Todd Klein have employed this technique. Particularly Workman’s work on The Mighty Thor. Whether or not it’s true, it just makes me think more thought went into the overall construction of the page than in many of the other styles of lettering. It looks like one cohesive whole from the creative team rather than independent parts.
Final Thoughts:
Though these are two of the earliest Hellboy stories, I find that they embody a lot of what is great about the series and capture the tone and feel of some of the best entries into the universe. I also think that they foreshadow some of the immense heights that Mike Mignola is going to reach with his short format stories as he grows more confident in his overall storytelling abilities.
Plus, who doesn’t love seeing a giant Nazi gorilla?

Le Monde Group HQ, Paris
Design: Snøhetta
Location: 67-69 Avenue Pierre-Mendès-France, Paris, France

With the completion of its new headquarters, the 1,600 employees of the Le Monde Group have been brought together under the same roof in a generously arching building on 67-69 Avenue Pierre-Mendès-France in the 13th arrondissement of Paris. With its bold new plaza and semi-transparent outer skin, the building creates connections to the general public and surrounding transit while also offering citizens and passersby a generous respite in the city. On December 11, 2020, the building received the prestigious French real estate prize, the Grand Prix SIMI, within the category “New Office Building Larger than 10,000 m²”
photo © Ludwig Favre
The Le Monde Group comprises some of France’s most famous publications, including Le Monde, Courrier International, Télérama, La Vie, and HuffPost, and their new home unites them under a shared roof together with the publication l’Obs, which is also owned by the group’s shareholders. Previously scattered across different sites in Paris, the six newsrooms now share a common home on the Rive Gauche of Paris, all while remaining independent and retaining their own space in the building.
photo © JARED CHULSKI
The project represents Le Monde Group’s re-investment in its staff at a time where other media outlets experience a down-sizing of their newsrooms, and their deep commitment to cultivating a vibrant public realm through democratic access to information and physical space. A translucent, dynamic façade and expansive public plaza express the building’s openness to its surrounding context.
– I am happy the Le Monde Group has chosen the heart of the Paris Rive Gauche district as home for its new headquarters, and by doing so, contributing to the district’s transformation, says the Mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo. – Besides the building’s magnificent architecture, the project’s openness to its surroundings will make it an integral part of everyday life, both for the district’s inhabitants and the 13th arrondissement. At a time where information and dialogue are more essential than ever, my hope is that the 67-69 Avenue Pierre-Mendès-France becomes the heart of this exchange, promoting transparent and accessible information for all.
Indeed, the project itself emerged from a moment when these priorities were called into question. As the Le Monde Group deliberated over architectural proposals for their future home in early 2015, just days after the attacks on Charlie Hebdo Magazine’s headquarters, they ultimately selected Snøhetta and local partner SRA’s design, opting for a building that remains in open dialogue with the city of Paris and its inhabitants.
photo © Ludwig Favre
– Since its inception the Le Monde Group Headquarters has embodied an architectural and symbolic counterpoint to the many challenges our societies face today. The building is primarily about opening up in a time where fear and uncertainty pushes our societies to increase barriers and strengthen security enforcement. In this sense, the project invites us to reflect on how architecture can create spaces that can be both public and private, exterior and interior, transparent or opaque. Like so many other of our projects, it is a hybrid building that explores the interstices of architecture and that is conceived to be at the service of the public, says Founding Partner of Snøhetta, Kjetil Trædal Thorsen.
photo © Ludwig Favre
Sitting adjacent to the historic Gare d’Austerlitz train station, the project is a close neighbor to the historic Latin Quarter and the lushly planted gardens of the Jardin des Plantes. The concave form of the building bridges over the below-grade railyard, anchored on both sides with two seven-story cantilevering volumes held together by a complex network of steel. Three gestural «cuts» shape the building mass: the «sky cut» reveals the oblique surface of the solar-panel-clad roof; the «city cut» pulls the building back from the along its street-facing facade; and the «ground cut» carves out the underside of the bridging structure, enveloping the new public plaza together beneath its expansive arched form.
-The construction of the Le Monde Groupe Headquarters marks a historic milestone for all our publications, explains the CEO of the Le Monde Group, Louis Dreyfus. – Our building illustrates both our editorial and aesthetic ambitions, but also the diversity of our newsrooms. In a world where the demand for high quality information is only increasing, our new common home offers our 1,600 employees a luminous working space with top amenities and dedicated spaces for each newsroom. This in turn ensures that we can continue to deliver journalistic content on all our platforms and in all formats, whether written or audiovisual, both today and in the future. Moreover, the office interiors, developed in collaboration with Archimage, offers our newsrooms a warm and soothing atmosphere with secluded spaces that ensure privacy when needed, says CEO of the Le Monde Group, Louis Dreyfus.

A Uniting Structure at the Heart of Modern-Day Paris The 23,000 m2 Le Monde Group Headquarters is built at the intersection of the old, historic parts of the French capital, and the more modern districts on the Rive Gauche. A previously industrialized area with railway tracks, the district has experienced a mass development since the beginning of the 1990’s under one of the most comprehensive urban developments of the French capital since 18th century Haussmannization. Today, the district has continued to develop as a high-density commercial and business district.
The building’s pixelated outer skin is composed of more than 20,000 pixelated glass elements in a strictly organized pattern with 772 possible configurations, that give the building a sheer appearance that shifts with the changing weather and light conditions. Each glass element represents one distinct pixel classified on an opacity scale ranging from transparent to fully opaque depending on its placement, allowing for the best views from the building as well as a maximum of daylight penetration. This highly sophisticated pattern references the printed letters of newspapers and magazines and makes up a text-like pattern that can be read more clearly when the 10 000 m2 facade is seen from afar.
photo © Ludwig Favre
Spanning 80 meters from one side to another, the building is a response to the conditions and challenges of the site: Acquired by the Le Monde Group in 2014, the site is situated just above the railways and platforms of the Gare d’Austerlitz which makes the creation of a technical basement impossible. The first challenge, therefore, was to construct a building where the entire technical system of the building would be cleverly incorporated into the structure of the building itself. The second challenge was that the site could only carry a specific amount of weight, and only on the two extremities of the site. As the middle section was not planned to hold the weight of a building, the client’s initial brief was to create two buildings on the parts of the site that were buildable.
photo © JARED CHULSKI
Snøhetta and SRA’s response to these challenges was to work on the idea of merging the two units together through a bridging structure of steel that would literally leapfrog from one side of the site to the other: a highly demanding engineering task for a building that weighs more than the Eiffel Tower. Nonetheless, it was a necessary one: only a unified building would create the dynamic environment needed to unite the different magazine and newspaper titles of the Le Monde Group.
photos © JARED CHULSKI
A Walk Through the Building The journey through the Le Monde Group Headquarters commences at ground level where visitors are greeted by a broad public plaza with integrated vegetation. The plaza invites passersby to linger and interact while also creating connections to the cityscape on each side of the building. From 2021, this physical connection will be further enhanced with the introduction of a new bridge that will spanning across the neighboring railways of the Gare d’Austerlitz.
New retail spaces also help activate a dynamic public realm. Situated below the warmly lit arch of the building, custom designed concrete benches offer refuge from the activity of the busy surrounding area. The site further encourages diverse transit modes and greener mobility alternatives with more than 300 bicycle parking slots and through its immediate proximity to neighboring train station.
photo © JARED CHULSKI
The materiality of the plaza is predominated by concrete with clear references to the urban context of the building. The concrete environment creates a sense of continuity and consistency, as if parts of the ground were gently peeled back and fused into the arching roof soaring above the plaza. Cast in in-situ concrete, the arch above the plaza is carefully hand-treated to create a textured finish.
The concrete plaza and elements from the façade continue inside the building. The building’s wayfinding, which is also developed by Snøhetta, is inspired by the glazed facade of the building and adorned with classic typewriter typography. This custom wayfinding guides visitors and staff effortlessly through the building.
The Le Monde Group Headquarters can be accessed from the two extremities of the building, one of them public, leading to food and retail services and providing access to a two-story auditorium. The other entry leads to a reception area for parts of the building which are only accessible to the Le Monde Group. The reception area reveals itself as a white canvas framed by a grey-scaled concrete terrazzo flooring that evokes the plaza outside.
photos © JARED CHULSKI
Two large amphitheater stairs in each entry lead up to the third level of the building, providing an unformal meeting space for staff and visitors. The stairs mark a physical continuity with the building’s arching middle-section, as if the stairs were mounted on top of it. The stairs provide access to the auditorium through an open reception area, well-suited for either conferences or receptions. The floor also comprises a staff cafeteria and restaurant including back office functions and meeting rooms.
From the third to the eight floors, the building offers high-quality, expansive open office spaces with a ceiling-integrated heating, ventilation and lighting system assuring the building offers maximum layout flexibility. With its floor-to-ceiling windows, and views overlooking the Seine and the surrounding city of Paris, the offices offer a bright and spacious backdrop for the thousands of employees and journalists of the Le Monde Group. Floors second also feature amenities such as a library, a staff restaurant and an analogue archive dedicated to the Le Monde Group.
From the fifth to the sixth floor, one finds the office spaces dedicated to the Le Monde newsgroup. Just like the office floors below, the Le Monde offices are organized as an open space, while also offering a diversity of flexible workspaces that integrate over 100 private work areas and over forty meeting rooms for group collaboration. The floors are connected by a double-spiraling staircase that opens the central part of the two levels. The staircase ties the newsroom together, breaking down artificial collaboration barriers and securing that information may be shared easily across the entire newsroom.
photo © Ludwig Favre
Finally, the top level of the building leads out to an open-air terrace which is accessible from both sides of the building. Framed by vegetation, the terrace creates beautiful views overlooking the surrounding cityscape and the Seine.

The Complete Guide to Growing Your Business with Instagram Marketing https://ift.tt/2n4AvTS
Instagram is one of the fastest-growing – if not the fastest-growing – social media platforms out there. In just nine months from September 2017 to June 2018, its user base skyrocketed from 800 million to 1 billion.
In roughly the same time frame, the number of Instagram marketers grew by nearly 7 percent. For comparison, Facebook’s only grew by about 0.5 percent and Twitter’s actually decreased by 0.3 percent.
It’s clear from statistics that Instagram has had a huge impact on the way people – and businesses – function on a daily basis. It’s become a key source for entertainment, learning, communication, and commerce.
But there’s a big roadblock for brands that want to jump on the Instagram marketing bandwagon. Many find themselves thinking, where do I even start? It can be downright intimidating to wade through all the disjointed tips and resources out there.
Well, friend, we’re glad you’re here. This guide will take you through the ins and outs of Instagram marketing in an actionable, clear-cut way.
We’ll discuss:
An overview and definition of Instagram marketing
How to set up an Instagram business profile
Using Instagram’s features to build a powerful marketing strategy
How to grow your following and profit from your efforts
How to track your performance with Instagram Insights
Some cool apps to help you along the way
Here we go.
What Is Instagram Marketing?
On our way to making you a master, let’s start with the basics. What is Instagram marketing, and how can you use it for your business?
As one of today’s most popular marketing channels, the platform offers a wide range of ways for you to reap its benefits. All you need is a good strategy and some dedication to making it happen.
Instagram Marketing Definition
Instagram marketing is a type of social media marketing in which marketers use the Instagram platform to promote their business. If “promote their business” sounds broad, that’s because it is: Instagram marketing can involve a number of different strategies and tactics, used to accomplish all kinds of goals a business might have.
When looking at various ways to use Instagram for marketing, you can split the activity into two main categories:
Paid tactics like advertising and influencer marketing
Unpaid tactics like creating organic content, such as posts, Instagram Stories, and comments, as well as engaging with other users’ content
Typical business goals might include selling your products or services, getting more followers and engagement, building relationships with potential customers and other brands, and generally boosting a brand’s reputation.
A little later, we’ll get into the specifics of how to set goals, and how to use certain tactics to accomplish them.
Instagram Algorithm
You may have heard the term “algorithm,” which is a widely misunderstood term. You don’t need to be a master of the Instagram algorithm, but a basic understanding of it can help achieve your goals faster and with fewer headaches.
While some marketers feel that the Instagram algorithm is their arch enemy, it’s actually a friend. That’s because its ultimate goal – like every other online algorithm – is to deliver relevant, entertaining, and engaging content to each user.
Algorithms do this by carefully studying their users’ activities and behaviors, then using this data to make informed guesses on what those users will want to see in the future. If your content happens to pass the “test,” you’re teed up for success.
We could go on for hours about the Instagram algorithm, but the main takeaway is that you should always, always focus on creating quality content that really provides a benefit for your audience.
No spammy posts or comments, and no content just for the sake of creating something. Be thoughtful and strategic, while constantly asking what your audience wants and how you can serve them through your efforts.
Examples of Instagram Marketing
To get your creative juices flowing, let’s look at a few common examples of Instagram marketing.
1. Organic Content
Organic content is an umbrella term that describes any unpaid content that you post, like photos, videos, and Stories. These posts should be at the heart of your Instagram marketing strategy, because t’ll be much easier to make those sales if you can keep your audience interested organically.
FitBit does a great job of promoting their product while giving their followers a “bonus” in the form of a Spotify playlist to listen to during their workout. The post features a fun visual of a FitBit displaying Spotify playlists.

2. Instagram Ads
If you’re looking to get some cold, hard sales, Instagram Ads are a more direct approach to Instagram marketing than organic content. There are several types of ads you can run, including image ads, video ads, carousel ads, Story ads, and shoppable posts.
Image and Video Ads
These show up in user feeds the same way that organic posts from other users do, so your ads can be front-and-center in the user experience. As you may have guessed, an image ad refers to an ad that features an image, and a video ad features a video.
These ads include a call-to-action button that encourages users to take a specific action, like:
Shop Now
Book Now
Learn More
Watch More
Contact Us
Send Message
Listen Now
Here’s an image ad from Student Universe, a company that scores travel discounts and promotions for students.
And here’s a cool video ad example from Volvo that invites users to take a “thumb drive” of its new XC60 luxury SUV.
Carousel Ads
Carousel ads function in a similar way to organic posts that feature more than one image or video. They appear in a user’s feed along with other posts, allowing you to display up to ten images or videos per post. What’s cool is that each of these items can have their own unique link to lead your users to.
If you have a dropshipping store, for example, you can highlight a few sale items and lead potential customers to your website to shop.

Story Ads
This is one of the best ways to sell on Instagram. Story ads are immersive, full-screen units that let your brand infuse creativity to make the ads more appealing for your audience.
While image ads are likely to retain their top spot as the most popular Instagram Ad format, Kenshoo’s quarterly trends report reveals that Story ads are growing fast.
According to the findings, advertisers’ share of ad spend on Story ads doubled year-over-year from nine percent to 18 percent in the second quarter of 2019.
Story ads pop up in between Instagram Stories from the accounts people follow. They can deliver a positive experience to potential customers. They also feature a tiny “Sponsored” tag at the top right and a call-to-action at the bottom.
To make money with Story ads, run a campaign that promotes your product or service, and ensure you add a call-to-action at the bottom to encourage people to buy.
You’ll have a choice in ads to publish either an image or a video. Whatever you decide, make sure your Story is attention-grabbing to snag the users who swipe fast through their content.
Shoppable Posts
In 2018, Instagram released a great feature that allows people to purchase an item without leaving the app.
Called Instagram Shopping, the core functionality of this new feature allows businesses to tag products in their Instagram content, after which potential customers who click on tagged items will be taken straight to the product page on the company’s website.
Let’s say you’re a women’s accessories brand, and you have pictures of a model wearing a few of your products. Potential customers can tap to view the items and then buy them directly in the app.
You can sell products via posts and Stories once you’re approved as a seller. There’s even an option to create an Instagram shop if you want to take things up a notch. Just remember – you need a connected Facebook business account to use this feature.
If you’re new to all of this, you can read our beginner’s guide to Instagram Shopping. It’s a deep-dive into how the feature works, how you can integrate it into your Instagram marketing strategy, and how you can increase your visibility on the photo-sharing app.
3. Influencer Marketing
Influencer marketing is one of the most popular forms of social media marketing out there today. Instagram influencers are people who’ve grown an organic, dedicated following based on their content niche. They exist in every industry, from fashion to tech to finance. And influencers in general exist on pretty much any social media platform you can think of.
When you can find the right influencers to match your brand, it can give you a serious boost in followers, sales, and overall brand recognition. The key here is that it’s imperative to find the right influencers.
In this example, Audible’s Canada division partnered with tech influencer @thetrendytechie. In her typical post style, she explains what she’s listening to and why she likes using Audible.
Here’s an influencer marketing post for the foodies out there: pierogi brand Mrs. T’s Pierogi’s collaborated with Ashley C. of @spoonfulflavor to create unique content. Ashley created a recipe using the pierogies and shared it with her followers, encouraging them to try it for themselves.
She sealed the deal with a relevant hashtag, #easyweeknightmeal, which makes the post searchable to Instagram users who want home-cooked meals but don’t have extra hours to slave away in the kitchen.
Another common form of influencer marketing is partnering with other brands to cross-promote contests and giveaways.
In this example, recipe curator @thefeedfeed partnered with DeLallo Foods and furniture company Room & Board to host a contest with prizes from each of the three brands.
As an added bonus, the image used to promote the contest is an actual entry – a gorgeous and mouth-watering appetizer spread from one of TheFeedFeed’s existing followers.
Now that you have the gist of the various forms Instagram marketing can take, let’s get to the juicy parts. First up: the dos and don’ts of setting up your profile.
Setting Up an Instagram Business Profile
Before you dive into Instagram marketing, make sure you have a proper business profile – not just a regular personal profile. This way, you can reap the benefits of business features like ads and Instagram Insights, which we’ll discuss later in this post. Plus, it’s more credible in the eyes of your audience.
Let’s take a look at how to create a business profile and some best practices that can turn a good profile into an awesome one.
How to Create an Instagram Business Profile
To create an Instagram business profile, you’ll need two things:
An Instagram account, which can be your existing personal profile or a new one you’ve created just for this purpose. We recommend creating a new handle with your company’s name for brand recognition.
A Facebook business page for your company. Instagram requires this for verification purposes, so go ahead and make one first. Here’s a step-by-step guide to create your Facebook business page.
Without further ado, here’s an overview of how to make an Instagram business profile:
On your smartphone, log in to Instagram with your company handle.
Tap the circular icon in the bottom right corner. The screen will expand to show another menu. Tap “Settings” in the bottom right corner.
On the Settings page, scroll down until you find “Switch to Business Profile.”
Instagram will then ask you to connect the account to your Facebook business page and edit your business’s public contact info: email address, phone number, and location. This will be public on your profile, so avoid adding private info.
And voilà. You’re ready to add some flair.
What Makes a Good Instagram Business Profile?
When you optimize your Instagram profile, it’s crucial that you stay consistent with your brand. This means including the same colors, fonts, and images that you have in other places, like your website and other social media accounts. This makes it easy for you to promote your business in a clear and recognizable way.
There are two main elements of your profile: your profile photo and bio. For the photo, we recommend using your company’s logo. It helps with brand recognition, which is why most companies use this technique.
For your Instagram bio, here are a few tips to make sure it gets some attention:
Make it about your customers, not your business. To do this, explain the benefits that you’re offering. Instead of saying something business-oriented like, “We post amazing travel photos,” National Geographic’s Travel account says, “It’s a big world. Explore it through the lens of our photographers.”
Use it as an opportunity to promote any important events or content on offer. Oberlo does this by encouraging users to join the Oberlo 101 course for starting your first online business.
Encourage users to engage with your brand. Wayfair does this by asking users to share their style in an Instagram post with the branded hashtag #wayfairathome. In exchange, the company features some of these posts on their account.
Include a link for users to explore. Your bio should lead users to experience your brand, whether it’s linking to your website, a specific sale or piece of content, or a content aggregation tool like Linktr.ee or LikeShop listing. MVMT uses a shortened URL to link to their new Element watch line, which we recommend if your URL is long or unsightly.
Use emojis. You’ll notice that most brands using Instagram for business use them. That’s because emojis are a quick, visual way to get your point across. Not to mention they’re super trendy. Bulletproof, a brand that’s widely associated with coffee but does much more, has a short-and-sweet description, “Coffee is just the beginning.” A single coffee mug emoji drives it home.
As you can see, there are many ways to build a stronger relationship with your audience through your Instagram profile. Just remember: you only have 150 characters, so use them wisely!
The Most Powerful Instagram Features for Businesses
Instagram has plenty of cool features that help connect users and enrich relationships. Even if you’re not a religious Instagram user, you’re probably familiar with the most popular ones.
Let’s look at a few features that can help boost your Instagram marketing strategy.
Instagram Hashtags
It seems that hashtags are virtually everywhere on the internet these days. When applied to your marketing strategy, Instagram hashtags are a clear signal to users that your posts are relevant to what they’re looking for.
In fact, many users look for content based on hashtags alone. So if your posts are related to a trending topic, be sure to include the associated hashtag. This can help you get in front of the eyes of people who are genuinely interested in what you have to say.
You can search directly in the Instagram search bar to find trending hashtags and scope out content that others are posting.
Other cool tools like Keyword Tool will generate hashtags for you based on your keywords. Many of these tools offer some free results, but require a paid upgrade for more extensive lists.
It’s also a smart idea to create a branded hashtag and use it frequently. This hashtag might include your company’s name or the name of a particular campaign, event, or promotion.
Instagram Stories
As of January 2019, more than 500 million people use Instagram Stories. The psychology makes sense: they’re a more exciting and ephemeral way to share with your followers, since they can only be 15 seconds long, they disappear after 24 hours, and they aren’t listed on your main profile or feed.
Stories are a worthy addition to your Instagram marketing strategy, as they give you an opportunity to touch on things that are more timely or in-depth, or don’t quite warrant a standard post.
Here are a few ideas for how you can use Instagram Stories:
Answer popular questions within your company’s niche or about your company specifically
Show “behind-the-scenes” content to give your audience a peek at how you do your thing
Promote your content, like a new blog, ebook, or infographic
Have a “takeover” where one of your employees (or an influencer) posts their own content for a day
Poll your audience on a popular topic or ask them for feedback about your company
Host a contest or giveaway in which you ask users to create a post a story that tags your account or includes a branded hashtag
Men’s clothing brand Chubbies has a creative “Welcome Back from the Weekender” series every Monday, which features a compilation of stories that act as a fun news-style show.
Be sure you mind your Instagram Story dimensions so your images and videos don’t look wonky to your viewers.
Instagram Live
Just as the name suggests, Instagram Live is a feature that allows you to engage your audience in a real time “live broadcast” format. This is an especially helpful feature for if you’re attending an event or discussing anything timely or urgent.
The cool thing about Instagram Live is that your story will show up first in your followers’ Story feed, and they’ll also get a notification that it’s happening when they open the app. But with great power comes great responsibility: don’t use this feature unless you have some truly good content to share, or you might push users away for wasting their time.
IGTV
While each Story can only be 15 seconds long, IGTV was made especially for long-form videos. These can be 10 minutes, or up to an hour for accounts with more followers. You can think of it as Instagram’s take on YouTube.
IGTV allows users to search for videos that pique their interest, and also makes recommendations based on their past behavior and activity. This helps make sure that audiences are connected with content they’ll like.
If you’re just starting out, IGTV may not necessarily suit your needs or goals. But if you’re a media company, or otherwise produce long videos, it can be a useful tool for getting your message across and engaging your audience.
Creating an Effective Instagram Marketing Strategy
Just like any other type of strategy, your Instagram marketing strategy will work best if you have a clear goal, choose individual tactics that will gradually build toward that goal, and keep track of your progress along the way so you can tweak where needed.
And that’s exactly what we’ll discuss now.
Identify Goals and Objectives
Your goals and objectives are the pillars of your marketing plan. We like to follow the SMART acronym for goal setting:
Specific: Give exact numbers and milestones instead of a vague goal.
Measurable: Choose goals that are trackable and measurable with analytics and insights.
Attainable: Be realistic. A million followers in a week is prooooobably not going to happen. (Unless you’re an egg.)
Relevant: Stay aligned with your industry, business, and outlook.
Time-bound: Give yourself a timeframe to accomplish the goal.
So instead of saying, “I want more followers,” try something like, “My goal is to gain 500 authentic followers in three months.”
Instead of, “I want more sales,” try, “My goal is to earn $1,000 in revenue from Instagram Ads sales this month.”
And instead of, “I want a more engaged following,” try, “My goal is to grow my engagement rate by 1 percent in six months.” (Check out this article to learn how to calculate and grow your engagement rate.)
Once you set a goal, it’s time to flesh out your Instagram content strategy.
Build Your Instagram Content Strategy
As we discussed earlier, you have several posting options for building your Instagram content strategy. Choosing the right ones depends largely on knowing your audience.
Ask yourself: What are the key demographics of my audience? What do they like to do, see, and experience? What entices and entertains them? How do brands generate trust and motivate them to make a purchase?
You probably won’t know all these answers right away, which is perfectly normal. It’s a learning process that you’ll get the hang of as you go. But you’ll find that as you get a laser-focused understanding of your audience and what makes them tick, your Instagram marketing strategy will perform better and better.
Here are some pointers for building a strong Instagram content strategy:
Make sure every post is aligned with your branding and aesthetic.
Keep a consistent “vibe.” For example, if your brand is high-fashion, ensure that all of your images are high-quality, conjuring feelings of elegance and sophistication. If your brand is quirky or funny, Instagram is a great place to let your true colors shine.
Shoe company Allbirds knows that their audience loves animals and memes, so they incorporate these regularly into their content strategy.
Like this post, which shows a photo of some lambs wearing sweaters, with a caption that reads: “When the whole squad has their fall fashion looks down.” Cute.
Get valuable intel from your friends and enemies.
If you’re just starting out, it can be a huge help to peep at what other companies are up to. Check out top-performing posts from similar brands, your biggest competitors, leaders in specific niches, and the most broadly popular accounts on the platform.
Doing this competitive research will tip you off when it comes to important trends, best practices, and little-known tricks and Instagram hacks to take you to the next level.
Create a social media content calendar to stay on track.
Create a social media content calendar so that you can always stay on top of your Instagram content strategy, ensuring that it’s cohesive and consistent.
To start, write out all of your posts for the next month, scheduling at least three posts per week. If you’re looking for inspiration or having trouble filling in all the spots, take advantage of free templates that follow common post styles and popular posts from other brands.
If you have a few bucks to spare, you can buy full packs that feature several templates with consistent visual themes, like this 48-template Instagram Commerce Pack from Tugcu Design Co.
If you really want to stay on top of things, you can use a tool like Later or Buffer to schedule automatic publishing for your posts. We’ll cover some of these apps a bit later, but in the meantime, here’s a handy guide for scheduling Instagram posts.
Use Instagram Insights to track your performance.
Instagram Insights is a free tool that’s available for everyone with a business profile. It gives you a valuable look at key performance metrics of your account, like how much attention your posts are getting and how engaged users are.
You can also see demographic info on your followers, giving you better intel on finding your target audience on Instagram. While this built-in analytics tool isn’t mind-blowingly comprehensive, it’s a fantastic tool for starters.
Now, let’s go through some tips to get more Instagram followers.
Growing Your Instagram Following
How can I get more followers on Instagram?
It’s a question we get asked all the time. Though there are some great techniques that work well if you already have a popular brand, the good news is that there are also several fantastic Instagram marketing tactics that work even if you’re starting from scratch.
Here are some of the methods you can implement right now to grow your Instagram following.
1. Host a Giveaway with Another Business
Partnering with another business to host a contest or giveaway can work wonders for your following.
Low-sugar chocolate brand Truth Bar, for example, partnered with sugar-free Belgian chocolate brand SkinnyMe Chocolate to host a giveaway that generated solid engagement.
The idea here is that if both of you have similar customer profiles, you’ll both gain high-quality followers. Request that everybody who enters the competition ‘likes’ the post and does some secondary action, like a tag or a follow.
2. Repost Other Companies’ Content
If you’re looking to gain a huge following on Instagram, consider sharing other brands’ content on your account.
This is both a smart and a natural way to get more exposure for your business. When you tag another business in your post and promote their content, they’re likely to reciprocate.
In some cases, they’ll follow you back and promote your business as well. And just as crucial, their followers are likely to take notice of your profile.
You can do this manually or use an app like Repost for Instagram for the purpose.
We suggest you go for the app because it lets you quickly select the accounts you’d like to repost. Plus, it automatically tags the original profile, giving it the credit for the content.
3. Give and Receive Instagram Shoutouts
Another version of the reposting strategy involves shoutouts.
This is where you ask another business in your industry if they would like to post your content, and in return you post theirs. The cool part of it is that you can give and receive shoutouts in various ways.
Digital cameras brand Canon, for instance, allows photographers who own a Canon camera to give it a shoutout using the hashtag #MyCanonStory in the description of their post.
Canon regularly returns the favor by sharing some of the most enticing work from those photographers. Here is an example:
This is a brilliant Instagram marketing strategy that benefits both the brand and its partners, who experience a significant uptick in their following and credibility.
You can learn more about shoutouts in our ultimate guide to Instagram shoutouts. All it takes is finding the right partners who’re open to offering a mutual value exchange.
4. Let an Influencer Take Over
This is a popular tactic that connects your business with an influential person who’s prominent within your industry.
For example, if you’re in the business of selling athleisure, you might collaborate with an athlete or fitness model.
This will expose your company to the influencer’s followers as they announce the Instagram takeover in the days leading up to it.
You can find relevant businesses and individuals to partner with by signing up to influencer marketing platforms. These are online tools that automate the discovery, vetting, and reporting processes, enabling you to focus more on developing influencer relationships and planning memorable takeovers.
5. Write Captions That Move Your Audience
Many people scroll through their Instagram feed when they’re bored or trudging through a mundane daily routine. You can attract and get this audience to follow you by creating intriguing Instagram captions.
The goal is to convey the story or feeling behind your video or image.
If the video or image is about a product, the caption is your canvas to fill in a quick description of your item. Explain why people should care, and don’t forget to include a few emojis.
In general, posts with strong captions can help shape your company’s personality and story. The key is to craft a copy that encourages engagement and makes people realize they need what you’re offering.
These four strategies offer a simple and effective way to increase your follower count. That said, it can take some time for results to come in if you’re starting from scratch with zero followers. That’s because no one knows who you are yet, which makes it hard to get initial followers.
But don’t let that deter you. To hit the ground running, check out our recommended strategies on how to gain followers on Instagram. Who knows, you might get 10,000 followers in as little as six months.
The Best Instagram Apps for 2019
Instagram itself offers tons of useful tools and filters, but sometimes you need a little extra push to set yourself apart from other businesses in a crowded feed.
Fortunately, there are plenty of Instagram apps available to help you do just that.
The best Instagram marketing apps will make your posts memorable, distinguishable, and share-worthy. While you might not be able to entice all 1 billion users, you should be able to attract the attention of those that matter most to your business.
Whether you’re looking to create better images, schedule posts in advance, or delete inactive followers, we’ve rounded up the essential apps that every business should add to their Instagram marketing toolbox. Note: Most of the Instagram apps in the list below are available for both iOS and Android devices.
Photo Editing Apps
There are dozens of flavors of photo editor apps to help you perfect your images. Some of our favorites include:
Snapseed (iOS and Android)
Snapseed’s brush tool enables you to adjust for saturation, color temperature, and exposure, which is ideal for situations where you don’t want to auto-enhance every detail in your image.
VSCO (iOS and Android)
VSCO is popular for its movie-like filters and editing features that often beat Instagram’s in-app offerings in terms of creativity. You can use it to adjust contrast, enhance skin color, darken edges, and more.
Afterlight 2 (iOS)
With this app, you can add text and special typography to your photos. This is an opportunity for you to do something like create hype for a product or promote a sale.
You can also download Instagram video editor apps to edit your clips. Thanks to features like clip trimming and noise reduction, you can create good-looking videos without hiring a pro.
Scheduling Apps
Once you figure out the best time to post on Instagram, you can use scheduling apps to create and push more content to your audience. Here are our picks:
Later (iOS and Android)
Later is extremely simple to use. You just have to upload a media item from your phone’s library into Later’s dashboard, and the scheduler will pop up. You can also write a caption, tag the location where the image or video was captured, and tag profiles of other users to increase your content’s discoverability.
Hootsuite (iOS and Android)
Hootsuite’s “Compose” window lets you decide whether you want to post content now, save it as a draft, schedule it manually, or queue it for later. Other Hootsuite features allow you to measure content performance, follower growth, and more.
Sprout Social (iOS and Android)
Videos and images can be posted and scheduled directly from Sprout Social’s mobile app. You also get access to several features, including a calendar that lets you see all of your scheduled content across social networks.
Content Apps
If you want to get more followers on Instagram, you have to publish content that stands out. That’s where content apps come in. Our favorites include:
StoryLuxe (iOS)
This is one of the best Instagram Story apps out there. You can use it to apply a variety of stylish filters, colors, textures, and templates to your Stories. Most of these are trendy and creative, often inspired by cinematic photography.
Layout (iOS and Android)
Layout is a super-smooth, feature-rich image mixer that instantly lays out up to nine images in several combinations to create a collage. You can select photos from your camera roll or capture them with the built-in image booth as you go.
Splice (iOS)
GoPro’s Splice comes with simple-yet-powerful editing features. You can use it to combine your favorite images and videos into one cohesive media clip, and then use the integrated music library and transition effects to create a masterpiece.
It’s worth experimenting with these apps and using Instagram Insights to monitor how they’re impacting your marketing strategy. Use the ones that have made a positive impact in conjunction with other mobile marketing apps to grow your business. With all the incredible apps available in the market, you’re sure to land some good combinations.
Making Money with Instagram Marketing
If you love being active on Instagram and have a decent number of engaged followers, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t be able to make money from this platform.
While top influencers make millions per post, even those with a following between 1,000 and 10,000 have the potential to turn Instagram into a healthy source of income.
To help get you started, check out these three ideas to start making money with Instagram marketing.
1. Sell Your Own Products
You can start making money by selling any digital or physical product that you manufacture yourself or buy from suppliers.
Physical products require keeping some inventory, meaning you’d need to spend some money to rent a place where you can keep the items. However, not everyone has the startup capital or funds to rent storage space.
The good news is that you can always sell dropshipped products. This technique lets you sell on Instagram without ever holding any inventory.
Once you’ve made a sale the supplier will ship the ordered goods from their facility, straight to the customer’s home. You’ll never need to worry about shipping, storing, or packaging your products.
2. Sign Up For an Affiliate Program
Alternatively, you can sell other people’s products as an affiliate and receive a cut. There are many people and companies that make money from Instagram like this. Make sure to use relevant hashtags on all affiliate posts to reach more audiences who might be interested in taking up your offer.
Affiliates earn their bounty via a promo code or a trackable link (most Instagrammers put it in their bio) to ensure any clicks are converted to sales. You can use these eye-catching post ideas to ensure your content draws people in to check out your affiliate product or service.
Find an affiliate program that pays the commission you want, and is related to the niche of your business in some way. For example, if you’re a veterinarian by profession, you may sign up for an affiliate program promoting a certain pet food brand or supplement.
The best way to do this is to search for your niche or profession on Google, along with the keyword “affiliate programs.” A veterinarian can search for “pet affiliate programs” or “dog food affiliate programs,” for instance.
3. Become an Influencer
With an influencer status, you can start pitching brands to promote their products and services in your posts.
Companies tend to partner with influencers to create sponsored content that helps spread the word about their offerings. Common types of content include an Instagram story or Instagram post that will include an explanation of the business or its products.
So, once you have increased your follower count above a thousand and have a good engagement rate, start your influencer outreach. The easiest way to do this is to send direct messages to brands you think are relevant to your business. If you’ve seen them collaborate with other influencers of your level, they’re likely to be open to hearing what you have to offer.
Top influencers make hundreds to thousands of dollars per sponsored story or post. If you create one piece of sponsored content per day, you can potentially make thousands of dollars per month.
With all of the new features and opportunities available on Instagram (and more to come), the platform is becoming one of the more popular channels for people and companies to make some cash.
Don’t let a small follower count discourage you from selling what you have to offer.
As long as you’re selling high-quality products, signing up for the right affiliate programs, and collaborating with relevant businesses, you’re on the right path to earning money via Instagram marketing.

Or, if you’re looking for tips that will help you create additional streams of potential revenue, check out our detailed guide on how to make money on Instagram.
Harness the Power of Instagram Marketing
Instagram is an absolute powerhouse in the social media world. For brands, there’s a virtually infinite amount of untapped potential to get attention, stimulate engagement, build strong relationships, and cruise past those annual financial goals.
While it can seem like a vast and intimidating world of its own, new companies have nothing to worry about – as long as they’re constantly watching, listening, and learning as they go. If you start your Instagram marketing strategy with a growth mindset, you’ll find that it gets easier and more lucrative as you go. It also gets pretty fun, if you play your cards right.

Real Talk: Is Blogging Dead for Marketing?
A recent study showed that the only epidemic that has killed more things than the Black Plague in the last century is the digital marketer.
(...don’t ask me for the name of the name of that study.)
OK, yes, this was a tad dramatic of me, but I’m not exactly wrong either.
On what feels like almost a weekly basis, marketers grab their pitchforks and rally proclaiming the death of yet another tried-and-true tactic or platform.
Keywords are dead.
SEO is dead.
Twitter is dead.
Honestly, the grief is too much.
Digital marketing thought leaders and experts insist on declaring these (and others) flatlined, yet they still walk among us today, alive and well, in some form or another.
In reality, it’s not that these strategies need to be put out to pasture; rather, the ways we approach them do -- but I’m getting ahead of myself.
Today, my friends, we’ve gathered here to discuss the latest victim of a fatal industry prognosis -- my good friend, blogging.
A Brief History of the Blog
Turn the clock back about 10 years and blogging was just taking its first mainstream steps in the online world.
In their first incarnations, blogs were essentially personal, online journals -- I know more than a few of you had a LiveJournal back in the day, don’t lie! --but as we entered the early and mid- 2000s, they began to emerge as underground, but reliable sources of niche information and advice.
Politics, popular culture, technology, cooking, and travel, among other topics, all had prominent blogs dedicated to them.
It was only a matter of time before marketers and businesses took notice.
Blogging for business slowly started to rise as an effective digital marketing tactic and with good reason.
When done right, not only did it prove to be a powerful way to get found in search engines by a qualified audience; it was also a brilliant way to share your unique expert opinions and truly show that you knew your stuff.
Long story short on this article -- none of that has changed.
More Effective Than Ever
Frankly, if you’re reading this today, you’ve already answered the question of is blogging dead.
Blogging still accomplishes everything it did a decade ago. And then some.
More than ever, people are seeking answers to their questions online. This is especially true when it comes to making a purchase.
In 2018, 71% of B2B buyers said they consumed blog content during their buyer’s journey, up from 66% just one year prior, and marketers confirmed this, rating blog articles the most effective content format in the awareness stage, according to CMI and MarketingProfs.
(Note: There are more interesting content marketing statistics where that came from.)
Despite all of the naysayers, a recent poll from Databox even found that 68% of marketers find blogging more effective than they did two years ago.
So, why are so many others crying wolf?
Blogging Is Not Dead; It’s Simply Reincarnated
Like all of the tactics before it, blogging is not dead for marketing in 2019, it has simply changed.
The catalyst of this is mainly because the blogging arena is saturated.
As it became commonplace for brands over the years, consumers needed ways to sort through the noise and search engines responded with new regulations and algorithms to help make this possible.
In turn, in order to still see results, the way we blog and create content had to change as well and, unfortunately, not everyone was equipped and willing to change along with it.
As marketers, we’re only human and it’s natural to be resistant to dramatic changes to what we know, but it’s a matter of survival of the fittest, really.
To continue succeeding with blogging for marketing, you need to adapt to the current environment.
So, What’s Changed?
As the digital space has flooded with competitors creating content on many of the same subjects, quality has become a key differentiator, rather than quantity.
In 2009, you would create hundreds of blog articles with the same keyword to show your expertise. The more pages you had on the topic, the more of an authority you were, but in 2019, this is more spam than substance.
Pillar content was the solution to this.
Pillar Content & Topic Clusters Reign Supreme
Bear with me for a second as I try to condense this vast topic for you.
At its most basic definition, a piece of pillar content is a long-form (usually more than 4,500 words), high-quality piece of content designed to be the core of a topic cluster.
It exists with the goal of ranking for a competitive, high-volume search term and linking to several smaller related pages and articles on a website to help it overall be seen as an authority in the topic by search engines.
Here’s an example of one we did on how to create a content style guide:
When Google or another search engine sees a pillar page like this, it helps all those linked to it rise in rank, in turn, cutting through the noise of competitors.
This is a huge departure from the way many organizations have created content all these years and frankly, it is not for the faint of heart.
Pillar pages require a great deal of planning, strategy, and knowledge to create and the marketers who can create them effectively are a grade above the rest.
They show they truly know their crafts and can be trusted with your business.
It is only fitting that this effort and expertise be rewarded in search engines. That those who share their knowledge get brought to the surface.
If you ask me, it’s great to see search engines finally reward the earnest, but that’s a conversation for another day.
Overall, pillar content should have a heavy hand in your content strategy.
It’s not the end-all-be-all, but at IMPACT, for example, a good portion of the articles we put into editorial calendar each month are those that come out of our topic cluster and pillar strategies.
In the past, you might have risked one of your pages outranking another with your spam, but with pillar content, one article feeds the other, and all ships rise.
What Hasn’t Changed?
Our good friend and partner Marcus Sheridan always says that while the platforms we use as marketers may change, the principles that guide how we use them, should not.
The biggest of these principles when it comes to blogging for marketing in 2019 is what we refer to as “They Ask, You Answer” or TAYA.
They Ask, You Answer
No matter where blogging goes, your strategy should always aim to answer the questions of your audience. It should deliver the solutions they seek when they arrive on your website, blog, or even YouTube channel.
How search engines and your audience members digest content will always evolve, but what they want from it, likely will not.
Focus on creating high-quality, original, authentic content that speaks to your buyers’ concerns as you always have (hopefully), pay attention to search engines, and blogging will continue to deliver the results you seek.

This is How You Write an Industry-Changing Book
If someone named the achievements of legendary copywriter Bob Bly, they would seem utterly fantastical:
Ninety-six published books (and counting), dozens of high-profile presentations with just as many corporate trainings, nods as “America’s Top Copywriter” from publishing giant McGraw-Hill, nearly four decades of experience in writing and copywriting, and consultancy credentials with business behemoths like Digital Marketer and Weiss Research. In addition to his battalion of books, Bly has also published myriad case studies, newsletters, e-mail campaigns, briefs, op-eds, essays, catalogs, and ads.
Did we mention that he’s a self-made millionaire?
There’s little doubt that Bob Bly is a polestar in copywriting, but he’s also an untapped resource for entrepreneurs who need guidance on how to write their first, foundational book.
Many of these ambitious entrepreneurs have the same problem: They want to write a book, but don’t know where to start.
That’s why I hooked Bob Bly to chat with me about the ins and outs of the process (one he’s more or less perfected), all in an effort to give ETR readers a springboard for ideation and action.
If you’re ready for your first book-writing credit, read on…
What do you think about the assertion that writing a book is one of the most effective ways for an entrepreneur to establish authority or expertise?
Although books serve that purpose, I don’t write books for that reason. I write them because whenever I learn something—and learn it well—I feel compelled to pass that knowledge along to others.
I’m also motivated to write books because I see a lack in certain area. For example, my first job out of college was as a technical copywriter for Westinghouse. At the time, the only resource I had to use for style was Strunk and White’s “Elements of Style.” But that didn’t serve technical writers very well. So, I went to McGraw-Hill and suggested the idea of a style guide for technical writers. They loved the idea. So I worked on it and they published it in 1982. That book has sold over 150,000 copies to date.
Impressive! And a fantastic start—a reference guide like that has staying power if it’s done well. Did you start by publishing some of your technical style concepts in articles before pitching the book?
I did publish a few—mostly in marketing trade journals. I enjoyed that, but I thought that a book would be a better way to educate people. As it turns out, it was also good for my consulting business. That wasn’t my plan when I first considered it, but it definitely worked out that way.
I do wonder about how you approached McGraw-Hill. I have to imagine that’s not an effective way to pitch an idea to a publisher these days.
You’re right—and I actually misspoke. I hired a literary agent and they sold the idea to McGraw-Hill. If I had approached them directly, they never would have talked to me.
That makes sense. So how do you go about finding the right literary agent? They specialize in certain genres, right?
A lot of literary agents will cover multiple genres, but generally, yes, if you’re a business author and you’re looking to publish business-related content, then you should be looking for an agent with that kind of experience. There are several directories of agents online (Writer’s Market is a good place to start), so start looking for them there. These directories will give you information on the kind of material they work with and how you can connect with them.
Also, a quick warning. A real agent will never take money from you. They don’t ask for reading fees or anything upfront. When you publish your book, they get paid—usually 10-15% of the advance and 10-15% of royalties.
Good advice. Okay, let’s talk about your process. How do you come up with your thesis, and when do you know you have a “critical mass” of information that calls for the writing of a book?
I’m not sure there’s a formula, but there is usually a moment when I realize that I’ve learned a lot about a subject and I know I want to pass that along. The sheer volume of information I have on it is usually enough to write a book, so I create a thesis around that.
How do you take that to a literary agent? Do you offer a formal proposal?
Well, first it depends on whether you’re self-publishing or aim to work with a traditional publisher. There are pros and cons to both, but I prefer working with a traditional publisher.
So, I usually write a one or two-page synopsis of the book and share it with my agent. If he likes it, then I put together a formal book proposal.
Part of this process is creating a very detailed table of contents. This is the tipping point—if I can’t create one, then I know I don’t have enough information to write a book.
Would you consider collaborating with another author in that case?
I have done that on at least a dozen occasions, and sure, that sometimes makes sense. But when I consider a book proposal, I typically approach it as a standalone author. If you’re co-authoring a book, it’s best to know that at the outset.
How do you go about finding the right publisher for your work? This has been my pitfall many times—sending my work to an inappropriate publisher.
Well, the literary agent should be able to push your content to the right publishers. They’re the ones keeping up with the publishing industry, so they know what will work and what won’t.
Having said that, it’s not a bad idea to take a look at books you enjoy in bookstores to see who the publisher is. Then, send them a letter referencing that book and suggest your own book as a great addition to their portfolio. I’ve done that several times.
Back to self-publishing, since that seems to be a very popular choice for up-and-coming authors these days. What are the advantages and disadvantages here?
If you want to publish a book for a very narrow audience—teaching business success principles to people in the self-storage industry, for instance—you probably want to self-publish. There’s just no room in a traditional publisher’s portfolio for something like that.
Self-publishing is also a good option for people who want to get their book out fast and don’t want to go through the hassle of pitching it to mainstream publishers. The flexibility of self-publishing serves these people well.
If you are self-publishing digitally, is it important to have a “print on demand” option for customers?
I think it’s very important, and I’ll tell you why. Although most of my books are published by traditional publishers, some of my content is not anything that they would touch, and yet my readers still ask me for it.
For example, I publish a weekly e-newsletter with essays on business, copywriting, and the like. When I have 75 or 80 of these that I think are good and my readers really enjoy, I send them to a graphic designer who assembles them in book format and publishes the collection for me with Create Space and Kindle. These books are then sold to my readers or used for sales materials.
With both the digital and print formats, I have a broader reach and more sales options.
That actually brings to mind something you wrote in a recent blog post on your Amazon account. You tell the story of a friend handing you a “book” they got from a recent conference that was really just a saddle-stitched, 50-page pamphlet. You described it as little more than promotional material of a personal brand. This vaulted you into a tirade about certain books that shouldn’t be written. Can you elaborate on that?
Let me say this: I don’t like books like these in part because they have inferior content. Because of that, readers are not getting a lot of value for their money. You’ll often see “books” like these that are superficial, sloppily produced, or full of typos—sometimes all three. Also, the authors’ aim is not to educate, but to sell their products and services. Their “books” are little more than sales brochures.
But you’re also just getting LESS content. Sometimes, these “books” would be better as e-books covering a single topic—something that’s around 15,000 words. My books, conversely, are about 80,000 words or 200+ pages.
That said, if you take a shorter “book”—something that’s say, 10,000 words long—and publish it on Kindle, then quickly and easily publish five more of them, it looks like you’re an establish, prolific author. I can’t fault that approach—it works. It builds credibility.
Can you talk a little bit about originality in book-writing? I know many up-and-coming writers who are hesitant to publish anything that isn’t 100% original. And yet, their point of view is original. What’s your opinion?
Ray Bradbury said it best: “Don’t worry about originality because your experiences aren’t like anybody else’s on the planet.” Even if you’re writing about the same topic as other authors, the book you are creating will be different.
The only exception to this is plagiarism, but that’s an obvious no-no.
Let’s get into some of the meat of a good book and what it should deliver. Does it have to have a lot of ideation and innovative thinking? Actionable content? What are the most important elements of a good book?
It definitely has to have a lot of actionable content. You need to be able to put the book down when you’re done reading it and DO something. As I’ve often believed, reading a good business book doesn’t make you money; doing what’s in the book makes you money.
Now, in terms of ideation and originality, here’s the safety net. Most readers read as much for reinforcement as for learning. So, if 80-90% of your book is stuff they already know but stated in a fresh and compelling way, they won’t be disappointed. If you’re helping them understand it even better, then they’ll say, “This guy knows what he’s talking about!”
The rest of the book—the remaining 10-20%—should be new ideation or a new approach to known information.
Talk about what you do to get past dreaded writer’s block. You once wrote that the best way to conquer it is just to write—even if you don’t have much (or any) inspiration. Does that really work?
It does, actually, but you need a few things in place first. Start by making a table of contents, as I mentioned earlier. Make it as detailed as possible—with chapter titles and sub-chapter titles. The beefier the outline, the better.
Then, put this into a Word file and add space between your titles and subtitles. Now you have your organization, your major topics. All you have to do is dive into one of them—not necessarily in order—and write 500 words on it. You don’t have to wait for a prompt or inspiration because the chapter or sub-chapter title provides that.
This process is much less intimidating than sitting down to a blank document and telling yourself you need to write 50,000+ words on a broad topic.
I’ll have to try that—but first I need to find my golden premise. Speaking of which, you’ve been in the business/copywriting field for decades. What niches still need good content in your opinion?
There are a lot of narrow niches that people don’t explore because they’re too small—but there’s lots of opportunity there. For example, a guy I went to high school with just wrote a book on marketing for eye doctors. Another friend writes articles and books on how to improve audiology practices.
While it may seem that a broad niche is more worth your time—because you’ll hit more people, which means more sales and more money—that’s not always true. The reality is, the narrower your audience, the more they’ll pay for valuable content. And if you establish yourself as an authority in that niche, it’s much easier to turn a reader into a lead and a lead into a client or customer.
Last question, then I’ll let you get back to writing your next book: What’s the biggest key to business book-writing success in the 2018 marketplace?
I think the people who will have the most success writing business books will be those who enjoy reading them—and who enjoy writing in general. I’ve never understood people who become writers but moan about how they’re rather do this or that. There are plenty of other ways to make good money or build your brand.
So, like so many other things, if you don’t love the writing, it will show. Go do something else.

Road Map to Success: Creating the Content of Your Audience’s Dreams
In 1995, Steve Jobs was interviewed by Robert Cringely for a PBS documentary, Triumph of the Nerds. During the on-camera discussion, the future Apple CEO reflected on the notion that generating big ideas isn’t the same thing as being able to bring them to life in a valuable way. As he said, “There’s just a tremendous amount of craftsmanship in between a great idea and a great product.”
It’s a distinction that most content marketers are familiar with – especially if it’s your job to spin rough, disorganized insights and ideas into high-performing content gold.
From an outsider’s view, it can be easy to assume content creators simply generate imaginative ideas, write (or record) them, and then publish them as a blog post, email message, or other content piece. But while those tasks are certainly key parts of the creative equation, a lot more has to happen behind the scenes if those creative assets are to perform successfully as a marketing vehicle – i.e., get found by the right audiences, drive meaningful conversations with them, and compel them to take action.
Ready to discover the secrets of producing well-conceived, well-written stories? Read on for a handy tutorial on the essentials, along with resources that can help take your content creation to greater levels of success.
Before you proceed: If you aren’t confident you have the right foundation in place to support your creative efforts – or just need a quick refresher on a particular topic – you may want to take a step back and review our previous Road Map to Success guides:

Turn Your Strategy Into a Stellar Editorial Content Plan
A practical view of content creation
There are three main areas to consider when it comes to establishing and activating your organization’s content creation capabilities:
Who will create/contribute to the content?
How will our creative efforts align with our strategic goals?
How do we craft compelling stories that our audience will love?
1. Establishing your content creation model
There are multiple ways your business can assemble its content creation force, each offering a distinct complement of pros, cons, and practical considerations. To determine the best contributor model to work with – and decide whether to use it in combination with other approaches – you need to weigh factors like the nature of your business, the competition your content will face, the level of expertise your content will require, and the team and budget resources you have. Here are some examples:
Hiring a dedicated writing staff: If you place a higher priority on content creation, want to produce a high volume of content, or need content to fill multiple channels and platforms at once, it may be worth having full-time writing talent so you can maintain control of the process.
Leveraging internal subject matter experts: If your content requires a high level of technical know-how or other specialized expertise, you may want to incentivize your executive management, sales teams, or other fellow employees to contribute content.
Incentivize your executives, sales teams, or other specialized employees to contribute content, says @joderama. Click To Tweet
Outsourcing to freelancers or other specialists: Smaller businesses, startups, nonprofits, or other companies that aren’t ready to invest in full-scale editorial capabilities may prefer to work with freelance writers (including trained journalists), or to partner with a content agency or other creative services provider.
Soliciting external contributors: If you are a B2B business that has a strong community of subscribers, known industry thought leaders may be interested in guest blogging on your owned media platform in exchange for valuable backlinks to increase their reach and exposure. Or, if your business has a more B2C focus, you might look to enable your ardent fans and followers to create user-generated content on your brand’s behalf.
Automating the process: While content creation via artificial intelligence is in its early stages, there’s every indication that automation will play a significant role in content marketing in the near future. Brands willing to invest in and experiment with the technology will be poised to make a big splash, leaving their competitors behind in the kiddie pool of AI-driven content innovation.

2. Aligning creativity and strategy
Sharing compelling, useful stories your audience will love is an admirable goal for any content brand. But, of course, there needs to be an effective marketing purpose supporting that love fest. In other words, if you aren’t working with the right content formats and types to draw the attention of your target audience or aren’t positioning your content in the right way to drive engagement and conversion, you’ll keep needlessly spinning the wheels of your content engine with nothing tangible to show for your efforts.
Achieving creative and strategic alignment is a top-down endeavor; so, let’s start with the practical and tactical decision-making that should come before you write a single word of content.
Evaluate your format and content type options
According to CMI’s 2018 Benchmarks, Budgets, and Trends research, social media posts, blog posts, emails, e-books, and video continue to reign supreme when it comes to the content formats and types B2B and B2C marketers rely on the most.
But just because these content options seem to have universal appeal doesn’t mean they are a good fit for every purpose or that there aren’t compelling reasons to work with other, more specialized tactics. It’s important to become familiar with the strengths and limitations of each option so you can make informed decisions on which to pursue.
Some #content options have universal appeal; that doesn't mean they're a good fit for every purpose. @joderama Click To Tweet
Here are some starting points for your research efforts:
Blogging
Video
Email
Social media
E-books
Interactive content
Visual content
Podcasts
Live events
Find your unique approach
Next, there’s the matter of how you distinguish the content you create under your chosen tactical umbrellas – an essential consideration if you want your content to rise above the noise, attract and engage the right consumers, and compel them to take action on behalf of your brand.
One way to approach this task is to find a content niche (aka a content tilt) that you can cover better than anyone else in your industry – think of Moz with its Whiteboard Friday blog posts or Hop Grenade Taproom and Bottle Shop using podcasting to become a media powerhouse in the craft brewery industry. By focusing your creative resources around one specialty, you eliminate the paralysis that can come from trying to fill too many content buckets at once and ensure that everything you create under that theme ties to your strategic purpose in an organic way.
To zero in on a viable content niche, ask yourself these three questions:
Can we own the conversation in this area for our industry?
Does our audience have a pressing – and unmet – need for this kind of content?
Do we have the right know-how and production capabilities to consistently create valuable content of this type?
Nail down your plan for strategic-creative alignment
Need more help determining the right content types or the ideal niche to set your content apart from your competition and drive you closer to your business goals? Continue your journey of discovery with these key resources:
Choosing your content tactics
Identifying your unique content tilt
3. Crafting your stories
Your content should serve as a platform for communicating your brand’s unique perspectives, capabilities, and value proposition; but it also needs to tell a story that resonates strongly enough with readers to convince them to act. In addition to the usual creative considerations – like determining topics, generating story ideas, and maintaining a consistently high level of creativity and writing quality – content marketers need to be comfortable working within a storytelling framework that leverages the power of persuasion.
Your #content needs to tell a story that resonates w/ readers to convince them to act, says @joderama. Click To Tweet
Identify worthwhile content topics
Kick off your creative ideation process by determining which subjects you should be writing about and eliminating the ones you don’t feel reflect your brand’s identity in the most meaningful and targeted way.
One way to approach this task is to identify some primary subject areas your target audience has actively been searching for information on. Conducting keyword research or using more sophisticated techniques like topic modeling at the start of your ideation process (if you don’t have this data on hand) can help you get a deeper understanding of the challenges your content should be helping readers solve. It can also help you confirm you’ve found a niche where your initiatives might be able to gain a competitive advantage: If your search uncovers relevant questions for which useful answers aren’t forthcoming, it’s probably a topic that’s worth addressing for your audience.
Generate creative article ideas
It takes a lot of creative ideas to fuel a content engine and keep it running smoothly on a long-term basis. Team brainstorming sessions are one great way to help your writers get their creative juices flowing and come up with a high volume of ideas to consider. Another approach is to incorporate word games and creative improvisation techniques – like the ones Cisco Systems’ Tim Washer describes – into your creative ideation process.
Incorporate word games and creative improv techniques in your #content ideation process, says @joderama. Click To Tweet
Prioritize your ideas
Not every idea your team generates is a good fit for your business: Some may be fantastic on paper but require more time and attention to produce than your team can spare; others may be creatively brilliant but not useful for your target audience. Make sure you have a prioritization process – like the core content strategy matrix Meghan Casey uses – to gauge the comparative value and urgency of your content ideas and help you decide which ones to move forward with.
Transform your ideas into resonant stories
Regardless of the creative process you use, content creation boils down to one essential step: the physical act of writing your stories. And when it comes to successful content creation, Steve Jobs’ thoughts on product development certainly apply: Turning a great idea into a great content piece requires considerable craftsmanship.
But that doesn’t mean the writing process has to cause a tremendous amount of anxiety and frustration. Ann Handley once pointed out that learning to become a better writer simply requires you to show up every day and practice your craft. Thankfully, she also provides some valuable tips to help make writing sessions more organized, eliminate unnecessary distractions, and stifle the inner critic that can derail your creative confidence and keep you from meeting your deadlines.
To be a better writer requires showing up every day and doing the work, says @annhandley. Click To Tweet
Strengthen your creative muscles
Over time, the rigors of the writing process can wear on even the most talented and prolific content creators. Look to aids like headline generators, productivity tools/guides, killer examples from inspiring content brands, or a little sage advice from a creative master when your writers need an extra spark of creative energy or a little help beating the occasional bout of writer’s block.
Enhance your writing quality
Content riddled with typos, grammatical errors, tech issues, or factual inaccuracies can cost you the trust and respect of your audience and, possibly, their patronage. To avoid being mocked for producing lazy, low-quality assets or labeled as a purveyor of fake news, carefully proof, test, and fact-check every content effort to ensure that it is as clear, functional, error-free, and above reproach as possible.

Jumpstart Your Job Hunt With a Quality Resume
After years of working in the executive staffing and recruiting industry, collaborating with countless hiring managers and human resource administrators across various industries, I acquired a thorough understanding of what these individuals were looking for in potential job candidates. I began to see patterns, consistencies, universal tendencies, and I began to see just how important a good resume really is.
As a point of fact, hiring managers only spend around 15 seconds perusing over a new resume and they are really only looking for a couple of things when they do. They’re on autopilot, for the most part. They want to know:
1) Who have you worked for? 2) Have you had steady employment? 3) What notable achievements and recognitions have you had throughout your career? 4) What do you have to offer which will meet with their specific needs?
An effective resume will answer those questions with a minimal amount of effort and, as with any effective marketing tool, it will also leave the reader wanting to know more. You want to give them just enough info to prompt them into action. That’s when they pick up the phone and call you for an interview!
So your resume is your professional introduction. It’s your only chance to make a memorable first impression and I can tell you right now that if you do not take your resume seriously, then your resume will never be TAKEN seriously. It really is that simple.
Now, if you feel you are capable and qualified to write a compelling and dynamic resume, then by all means give it a shot. However, if you’re not extremely confident in your skills as a writer and/or marketer, I would sincerely recommend you hook up with a professional resume writer to help you craft the perfect resume for you. A seasoned veteran in these matters can be an invaluable resource. After all, I trust my mechanic to work on my car because he works on cars all day, every day. Well there are people out there who work on resumes all day, every day…so trust us!
For those who are convinced they have what it takes, this article should help you with some of the finer points. Although job markets and technologies are always changing, there are some things which are fairly universal and constitute the basic principles of a winning resume. To guide you along, I have compiled a comprehensive list of resume writing Do’s and Don’ts, complete with secret tricks of the trade as well as a collection of common mistakes people make. So pay close attention, take my advice into consideration, and you’ll be on your way to landing that dream job in no time!
DON’T
Misrepresent the Truth – Lying on your resume is never a good idea. You don’t want to start a professional relationship based on the misrepresentation of facts. Just as you would hope the employer is not lying to you about the job requirements, salary, etc, they expect you are not lying to them about your background and/or skill sets. It’s the decent and respectable way to conduct yourself and there is no room for dishonesty in the workplace because, sooner or later, these things always have a tendency to come to the surface. Remember: The truth shall set you free!
Use Slang or Jargon – You need to be as professional as possible in the context of your resume if you expect to be taken seriously as a professional. For this reason, you should avoid using familiar lingo, slang, or jargon in your resume. The exception to this rule is when using very industry-specific terminology to describe your particular skills. This can actually help to lend you credit as a knowledgeable individual and an expert in your field, but your such terms wisely and tactfully.
Include a Picture – Unless you’re a model or in a professional dependent on physical attributes, I always advise against putting your picture on your resume. In my experience, it can do more harm than good. So keep the formatting of the resume simple and let the hiring manager use their imagination until they call you in for an interview. Plus, your looks should have nothing to do with your professionalism or the credentials qualifying you for the position. In the business world (even legally), your appearance should have no value as a selling point for you as a competent job candidate.
Include Irrelevant Info (AKA “Fluff”) – If it’s not important, don’t add it to your resume. If you were a cook 10 years ago but now you’re looking for a job in retail management, don’t clutter up your resume with irrelevancy. Try to put yourself in the shoes of the hiring manager and ask yourself what they would see as important. How does your background correspond with their needs as an employer? Anything else is fluff. Don’t add your hobbies to your resume. Don’t add your references (if they want them, they’ll ask at the appropriate time). And don’t include your high school education either. Finally, don’t be redundant and repeat yourself throughout the context of your resume. It’s OK to reinforce themes, but don’t push it. If your title has been Branch Manager at each of your past three companies, find a way to differentiate each of these positions and highlight your most notable accomplishments. Don’t just copy and paste the line “Managed a team of branch employees” three times. That will get you nowhere.
Include a Core Competencies Section – I find Core Competency sections to be fairly worthless in a professional resume and I’ll tell you why: It doesn’t matter if you’re a waitress, an administrative assistant, a nurse, a teacher, or a sales executive – it doesn’t matter what kind of background you have – anyone can describe themselves as “Self-Motivated”. Anyone can say they are “Goal Oriented” and “Results-Driven” and everyone has “Strong Verbal and Written Skills” when they’re applying for a job. I can say with some degree of certainty that the majority of hiring managers and HR administrators skip right past a Core Competencies section and with good reason. The key to a successful resume is in SHOWING a manager how you are “Results-Driven” and “Goal Oriented” instead of just TELLING them! Your accomplishments speak volumes, let them do the talking. If you are going to include a Core Competencies section, make sure it’s unique and adds value. Again, vagueness will often work against you here because it cheapens the experience of reading your resume.
Rely on Templates or Sample Resumes – If you are surfing the web and looking for a good resume sample or template to use as a guideline for your own resume, make sure the sample you settle on is appropriate considering your background, the industry you’re in, and your career intentions. Because when it comes right down to it, different styles of resumes should be employed in different industries. By way of illustration, a computer programmer’s resume will vary greatly from that of a sushi chef. They both have very different skill sets which need to be highlighted in very different ways in order to be effective. If both those individuals tried to write their resumes in the same format, it would be a disaster. Hiring authorities, respectively, each have their own expectations and some resume formats are better than others at addressing those individual expectations.
Write a Novel and Call it a Resume – I repeat: Do NOT write a novel and call it a resume. Too many people make this mistake. They want to write this wordy, drawn-out thesis outlining their life story and their career aspirations. They have all these skills and accomplishments and they want to include them all in there somewhere, but the problem is most people just don’t know when to stop. Don’t be afraid to leave out some of the details and explore those further in the interview process. My advice is to highlight only those aspects of your background which are most applicable for the job, or types of jobs, you are planning to apply for.
Limit Yourself to One Page – In contrast to the last point, you may not want to limit yourself to a 1-page resume. A common misconception is that a professional resume HAS to be one page. However, that’s not really the case these days. I while back, before the miracles of technology, I may have agreed. But now that most resumes are being read on a computer screen versus on paper, there’s no need to limit yourself in such a way. Those who try to cram all their info on 1-page resume usually resort to smaller font and zero spacing. When viewed on screen, this is not an attractive format and it’s hard to read. Now, I’m not saying you should write a 20-page catalogue of your experiences, nor am I advocating the use of size 20 font. Instead, I would say 12-14 size font should suffice and I recommend you keep it at two pages. That leaves plenty of room to say what needs to be said. Of course, if you have limited experience then a 1-page resume will do just fine.
DO
Use Bullet Points – When it comes time to explain your experiences in your resume, use bullet points to outline your accomplishments. It is much easier to read and even easier to skim, which is what hiring managers are doing most of the time anyways. Bullet points draw attention to important information. They are also visually appealing and make the information seem more accessible to the reader. So keep them short and meaningful. Some people opt for a short paragraph explaining their duties and responsibilities, followed by bullet points highlighting their most notable achievements. This too is acceptable, just make sure to keep that paragraph very succinct and avoid any redundancies as well.
Have a Strong Objective Statement – Although this is a matter of some debate these days, I firmly believe a strong, concise Objective Statement can go a long way. First off, it immediately tells the reader what job you are applying for. That can be a big deal when you’re submitting your resume to a HR representative who has their hands full with many different job openings. Recruiters as well. And if you’re a senior manager, you don’t want to get thrown in the pile with the mail clerks, right? Not only that, but an effective Objective Statement will briefly summarize your qualifications so a hiring manager can make an instantaneous decision whether or not to keep reading. They do that anyways, so why not address their needs in the intro and add value by showing them what you have to offer right off the bat. Remember, I’m only talking about one sentence here. One sentence to market yourself. Once sentence to spark their interest. You don’t want to give the reader too much to think about, rather you want them to proceed on and read the rest of your resume. So grab their attention, establish your professional identity, show them your value, and let them move on to the good stuff!
Choose the Right Format – One thing you need to remember is that there is not one universal formatting methodology because, in truth, there is no cookie-cutter way of writing a resume. What works best for one person may not be best for another. Some people will benefit from a Chronological resume whereas that format may be detrimental to someone who has jumped around a lot in their career. The only thing I can suggest is that you do your homework. Know the different types of resumes (Chronological, Functional, Targeted, and Combination) and know the distinct merits of each. Then make an informed decision as to which style is best for you. If you are surfing the web and looking for a good resume sample or template to use as a guideline for your own resume, make sure the sample you settle on is appropriate considering your background, the industry you’re in, and your career intentions.
Cut to the Chase – Don’t waste time…get to the good stuff. As I said before, a hiring manager will most often skim, scan, and glance over a resume. Keep in mind that they have specific questions in mind when they review a resume for the first time and they expect specific answers. One of the most important questions they are asking is: “Who has this person worked for in the past?” For this reason, I always suggest that serious job seekers highlight their experiences first and foremost. Right below your one-sentence Objective Statement you should transition into and Experience section. In this section you should list your past employers, the years you worked for them, your job titles, and a brief description of your duties there. Of course, this may not be the best approach for some people. If your background is heavily dependent on your academic experience, then you may want to jump into that first.
Focus on Your Target – My reasons for saying this are as follows: An unfocused resume sends a very clear message that you are unfocused about your career. And a hiring authority doesn’t want to see that. They want to see that you have career goals and that those aspirations correspond with their needs as an employer. So keep in mind that a customized resume, modified for a specific position, is always preferable to a generalized and vague resume. If you’re serious enough about a job then you should take the extra time and effort to tailor a resume to that job’s requirements. I assure you your efforts will not go unnoticed.
Be Articulate and Grammatically Exact – In my humble opinion, it’s of the utmost importance to be eloquent within the context of your resume and to make sure you’re using proper grammar and syntax. For your current job description, use the present tense. For past jobs, use past tense. This seems like a no-brainer, but again you’d be surprised at how many people make this mistake. Being articulate can go a long way as well. Most hiring managers will consider it a plus if you can convey your level of intelligence in your written communications. So don’t be afraid to break out the thesaurus and make sure you have someone else edit your resume before you send it out to potential employers. That’s imperative!
K.I.S.S. – A wiser man than me once made this bold statement and it’s extremely applicable when writing your resume: Keep It Simple, Stupid! Too many people make too much of an effort to “stand out from the pack” and in doing so they may unwittingly be hurting themselves. In some professions, such as the creative design field, it may be advantageous to show your originality and imagination, but in other business fields this kind of flamboyancy in a resume is unnecessary and can actually be injurious to your cause. In terms of formatting, the same holds true. I have found that people tend to have much more success when they opt for an uncomplicated formatting style. Some people still want to get all jazzed up with pictures and text boxes and funky font, but that’s just fluff. It’s noise. It is irrelevant to the purpose of your resume, which is to sell yourself through highlighting your skills and accomplishments. And hiring managers see right through that!
Take Your Resume Seriously – As previously stated, if you don’t take your resume seriously then your resume will not be TAKEN seriously. If you choose not to work with a professional, then at the very least have an impartial third-party edit it for you and give you some constructive feedback. This is for your own sake. What happens when you accidentally type “Manger” instead of “Manager”? Do you think Spell Check is going to bail you out? Whatever you do, don’t send it out to potential employers without having someone else look it over. Some people just need to swallow their pride because when it comes right down to it, you may be the best at what you do, but if you don’t write resumes for a living then chances are there’s someone out there more qualified to write your resume than you are. Please consider that if you’re serious about being taken seriously!
