Francisco de Goya y Lucientes (Spanish, 1746-1828) Las Santas Justa y Rufina, 1817 Sacristía de los Cálices, Seville Cathedral Santa Cruz, Sevilla, Andalucía Justa and Rufina are the patron saints of Seville, whose cathedral is seen in the background. Their legend states that they were sisters and natives of Seville who made fine earthenware pottery for a living, with which they supported themselves and many of the city's poor. Traditionally, they are said to have lived in the neighborhood of Triana. Justa was born in 268 AD, Rufina in 270 AD, of a poor but pious Christian family. During a pagan festival, they refused to sell their wares for use in these celebrations. In anger, locals broke all of their dishes and pots. Justa and Rufina retaliated by smashing an image of Venus. The city's prefect, Diogenianus, ordered them to be imprisoned. Failing to convince them to renounce their faith, he had them tortured on the rack and with iron hooks. This method also having failed, they were imprisoned, where they suffered from hunger and thirst. They were then asked to walk barefoot to the Sierra Morena; when this did not break their resolve, they were imprisoned without water or food. Justa died first. Her body, thrown into a well, was later recovered by the bishop Sabinus. Diogenianus believed that the death of Justa would break the resolve of Rufina. However, Rufina refused to renounce her faith and was thus thrown to the lions. The lion in the amphitheatre, however, refused to attack Rufina, remaining as docile as a house cat. Infuriated, Diogenianus had Rufina strangled or beheaded and her body burned. Her body was also recovered by Sabinus and buried alongside her sister in 287 AD.

Tiny and Fluffy by Regina Via Flickr: Another encounter of the cute kind last weekend at the park. This duckling is a young red crested pochard. There were five ducklings and they were tiny, probably only a few days old.

Story time - yes, it's trek - related! 🦎🦎🦎

Last year, the crappiest year of my life after 2016, I made a new friend. Rufina. Honestly, she's amazing. She's everything I could ever dream of when it comes to a friend. Even when we barely knew each other, she was there for me every time I needed her, and I didn't even have to ask. She's honestly adorable. She's witty, funny, a lovely Aquarius. (I'm a lovely Sagittarius for astrological reference.)

The problem is... she had no idea about Star Trek! In fact, early in our friendship, she asked me, 'So, what's that Star Trek about?' 😂 She literally knew NOTHING. I was shocked that she was so clueless.

So, how should I start talking about it? If you know me even a little (and I bet you can see my icon), I started talking to her about Baby Spock. I poured my heart out to her and she literally didn't even blink. She was unamused. LOL. She 'cuted' me (just made a word) for being in love with him, but she wasn't interested in watching anything trek.

Months passed, and we became so much closer, but her indifference to our precious star trek was always there.

So, a couple of months ago, when my mental health finally came back to normal and brain started functioning even better than before, I talked to her about Janeway. I should have done that earlier.

NOW SHE WAS INTERESTED. Now we could talk. A female captain leading the show? Being such a badass? Saying lines like 'there is coffee in that nebula'? 'OMG, she sounds amazing.' She loved her. And she loved the idea of watching Voyager some day.

More time passed, and the other day, I was like, 'It has to happen'. I told her, are you in the mood to do some Voyager? It's about time.

She thought we'd watch 'Caretaker'. MUHAHHAHAhahahfhahhah.

We watched 'Threshold'. She's a very strong person. I knew she could handle it.

We went through it. She managed. Her bravery made me tear up. She didn't comment anything while watching. She didn't make any question. She was absorbed into the screen.

After the episode ended, she told me that 'Star Trek is really something after all' and that she's in the mood for some pizza pepperoni. She also wondered what episode we should do next.

She'd passed the test.

Oh, Rufina. You can't imagine how much we've bonded now.

"The first three days of the protests were marked by massive arrests and unprecedented levels of state-sponsored violence. The testimonies of those released from jails include accounts of minors and seniors being arrested, overcrowded jail cells, the use of torture, blood-stained floors, and a lack of food, water, and medical aid. Released medical protocols include accounts of rape and organ damage. Testimonies published in the independent Belarusian and russian media report that certain warders imitated nazi concentration camp practices by releasing gas into the jail cells and police transportation vehicles, assigning numbers to prisoners, and marking those due for extra-violent beatings with yellow paint and those who had already been tortured with red. The audio recording leaked by BY_POL (initiative organized by former police who are against Lukashenko's regime) in early January 2021 confirms the regime’s plans to create concentration camps for the protesters. Observers have reported one such camp was built near the town of Ivatsevichy in the Brest region. As of the end of 2020, the Viasna Human Rights Center has documented more than 1000 testimonies of torture victims. Their analysis suggests that acts of torture were widespread, systemic, and well organized as a politically motivated punitive operation perpetrated by the authorities to intimidate the Belarusian public. By December 2020, more than 33,000 people had been arrested since the beginning of the protests. According to Viasna Human Rights Organization, as of today, there are more than 530 persons who are considered political prisoners and remain in jail."

Duckling cuteness by Regina Via Flickr: Last weekend when I was at the neatby park I saw some ducklings but at the time only had my macro lens with me. So I returned to the park yesterday morning and luckily found them again near the place where I had first met them. This time I was equipped with my long telezoom lens, the ducklings were quite cooperative too and I could take a series of photos. Maybe I will post a few more occasionally. These ducklings are young red-crested pochards (Netta rufina), a species I don't see very often here, which made the encounter even more exciting.
