THE CONQUERING MALE
1930
The Conquering Male is a play by Laurence Gross. It was originally produced by Arch Selwyn, staged by Stanley Bell, starring English actor Ernest Lawford as ‘The Conquering Male’. The cast also included Paulette Goddard.
The play takes place in the Mayfair section of London, England.
The story is about a philandering gentleman who discovers late in life that there are more enriching ways to lead his life.
The play went into rehearsal on April 7th with a Broadway opening date of May 12, 1930. Although Laurette Taylor was first mentioned to play opposite Lawford as Mrs. Waring, Ann Andrews was cast, only to be replaced in rehearsal by Gladys Hanson.
Paulette Goddard (born Marion Levy) made her stage debut as a dancer in Ziegfeld's 1926 revue No Foolin', which was also the first time that she used the stage name Paulette Goddard. Ziegfeld hired her for Rio Rita, which opened in February 1927, but she left the show after only three weeks to appear in The Conquering Male. Although she had a small role, her Hollywood publicists later said she had the leading part. Goddard was not even mentioned in Atlantic City reviews of the play.
The play premiered on April 28, 1930 in Newark NJ at The Broad Street Theatre. It was billed as “a smart comedy of London Manners”.
The play then opened in Atlantic City at Nixon’s Apollo Theatre on May 5, 1930. The theatre had been dark the week prior, due to a last-minute cancellation of a booking of Shuffle Along found to be booked under false premises.
That year, Atlantic City hosted the 36th Annual Convention of the New Jersey State Federation of Woman’s Clubs. Federation secretary Beatrice Westcott reported about her trip in the Chatham Press:
“Thursday evening was set aside to do as one wished so I chose to attend a play, ‘The Conquering Male,' thinking it a far cry from a Woman's Club Convention. In the first two acts, the male was as advertised, but in the last act the conquering male became the conquered male (as usual) and I rode back to the hotel feeling quite smug with the female still in the ascendency.”
The play, however, hardly conquered the generally genial Atlantic City critics.
“There are things to laugh at in ‘The Conquering Male’ and they are appreciated all the more for having to wait for them.” ~ J.J. FARRELL, ATLANTIC CITY PRESS
“Arch Selwyn is none too happy about ‘The Conquering Male,' which hasn't completely swept Atlantic City off its feet. He may hold the piece out a time for revision.” ~ DONALD MULHERN, MAY 9, 1930
On May 18, 1930 it was reported that Selwyn was wooing Cyril Maude, presumably to replace Ernest Lawford in the leading role. Maude said that he was not fond of touring and might only entertain the offer to play the role in New York City. That offer never came.
The Conquering Male was born in Newark and died in Atlantic City - a Jersey boy! The title only lives on as part of Paulette Goddard’s biography.

Groundhog Day (1993) (film)
Groundhog Day is a 1993 American fantasy comedy film directed by Harold Ramis and written by Ramis and Danny Rubin. It stars Bill Murray, Andie MacDowell and Chris Elliott. Murray portrays Phil Connors, a cynical television weatherman covering the annual Groundhog Day event in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, who becomes trapped in a time loop, forcing him to relive February 2nd repeatedly. The film also stars Stephen Tobolowsky, Brian Doyle-Murray, Marita Geraghty, Angela Paton, Rick Ducommun, Rick Overton, and Robin Duke.
Rubin conceived the outline of Groundhog Day in the early 1990s. He wrote it as a spec script to gain meetings with producers for other work. It eventually came to the attention of Ramis, who worked with Rubin to make his idea less dark in tone and more palatable to a general audience by enhancing the comedy. After being cast, Murray clashed with Ramis over the script; Murray wanted to focus on the philosophical elements, whereas Ramis had concentrated on the comic aspects. Principal photography took place from March to June 1992 almost entirely in Woodstock, Illinois. Filming was difficult, in part because of bitterly cold weather, but also because of the ongoing conflict between Ramis and Murray.
Groundhog Day was considered a box-office success on its release, earning over $105 million to become one of the highest-grossing films of 1993. It also received generally positive reviews. Reviewers were consistent in praise for the film's successful melding of highly sentimental and deeply cynical moments, and for the philosophical message beneath the comedy. It received multiple award nominations and won a BAFTA Award for Best Original Screenplay. For all its success, the film marked the end of Ramis's and Murray's long collaborative partnership, which produced films like Caddyshack (1980) and Ghostbusters (1984). The pair did not speak after filming until shortly before Ramis's death in 2014. The film was a showcase for Murray; previously seen only as a comic actor, his performance led to more serious lead roles in critically acclaimed films.
In the years since its release, the film has grown in esteem and is often considered to be among the greatest films of the 1990s and one of the greatest comedy movies ever. It also had a significant impact on popular culture; the term Groundhog Day became part of the English lexicon, meaning a monotonous, unpleasant, and repetitive situation. The film has been analyzed as a religious allegory by Buddhists, Christians, and Jews. Groundhog Day is also credited with the mainstream acceptance of comedy films featuring fantasy genre elements. In 2006, the United States Library of Congress selected the film for preservation in the National Film Registry. Groundhog Day has been adapted into a 2016 musical and a 2019 video game sequel, Groundhog Day: Like Father Like Son.
On February 1, television weatherman Phil Connors reassures his Pittsburgh viewers that an approaching blizzard will miss Western Pennsylvania. Alongside his producer Rita Hanson and cameraman Larry, Phil travels to Punxsutawney for his annual coverage of the Groundhog Day festivities. He makes no secret of his contempt for the assignment, the small town, and the "hicks" who live there, asserting that he will soon be leaving his station for a new job.
On February 2, Phil awakens in the Cherry Tree Inn to Sonny & Cher's "I Got You Babe" playing on the clock radio. He gives a half-hearted report on the groundhog Punxsutawney Phil and the festivities. Contrary to his prediction, the blizzard strikes the area, preventing all travel out of Punxsutawney, and although he desperately searches for a way to leave, he is forced to spend the night in the town.
The next morning, Phil wakes once more to "I Got You Babe" and the same DJ banter on the radio. Phil experiences the previous day's events repeating exactly and believes he is experiencing déjà vu. He again unsuccessfully attempts to leave the town and retires to bed. When he awakes, it is again February 2. Phil gradually realizes that he is trapped in a time loop that no one else is aware of. He confides his situation to Rita, who directs him to a neurologist, who in turn directs him to a psychologist; neither can explain his experiences. Phil gets drunk with locals Gus and Ralph and then leads police on a high-speed car chase before being arrested and imprisoned. The next morning, Phil awakens in the Cherry Tree Inn.
Realizing that there are no consequences for his actions, Phil begins spending loops indulging in binge eating, one-night stands, robbery, and other dangerous activities, using his increasing knowledge of the day's events and the town residents to manipulate circumstances to his advantage. Eventually, he focuses on seducing Rita, using the loops to learn more about her so that he can try to sleep with her. No matter what steps he takes, Rita rebuffs his advances, particularly when Phil tells her he loves her; Rita asserts that he does not even know her.
Phil gradually becomes depressed and desperate for a way to escape the loop. He commits suicide in a variety of ways, even kidnapping Punxsutawney Phil and driving them both off a cliff. Each time, he reawakens on February 2 to "I Got You Babe". He eventually tries to explain his situation to Rita again, using his detailed knowledge of the day to accurately predict events. Convinced, Rita spends the rest of that day's loop with Phil; she encourages him to think of the loops as a blessing instead of a curse. Lying on the bed together at night, Phil realizes that his feelings for Rita have become sincere. He wakes alone on February 2. Phil decides to use his knowledge of the loop to change himself and others: he saves people from deadly accidents and misfortunes, and learns to play the piano, sculpt ice, and speak French. Regardless of his actions, he is unable to save a homeless old man from death.
During one iteration of the loop, Phil reports on the Groundhog Day festivities with such eloquence that other news crews stop working to listen to his speech, amazing Rita. Phil continues his day helping the people of Punxsutawney. That night, Rita witnesses Phil's expert piano-playing skills as the adoring townsfolk regale her with stories of his good deeds. Impressed by his apparent overnight transformation, Rita successfully bids for him at a charity bachelor auction. Phil carves an ice sculpture in Rita's image and tells her that no matter what happens, even if he is doomed to continue waking alone each morning forever, he wants her to know that he is finally happy because he loves her. They retire to Phil's room.
Phil wakes the next morning to "I Got You Babe", but finds Rita is still in bed with him and the radio banter has changed; it is now February 3rd. Phil tells Rita that he wants to live in Punxsutawney with her.
Concept and original draft
The original idea for Groundhog Day came to writer Danny Rubin in 1990. He had moved to Los Angeles to work as a screenwriter. While waiting in a theater for a film to start, he was reading Anne Rice's book The Vampire Lestat (1985).[3][4][5] Rubin began musing about vampiric immortality and what one would do with their time if it was limitless. He reasoned that vampires were like normal people who did not need to adhere to ordinary rules or moral boundaries.[4][5] He questioned if and when immortality would become boring or pointless, and how a person would change over time, especially if they were incapable of substantial change.[4] He singled out men he deemed to be in arrested development, who could not outlive their adolescence.[4][5]
Having recently sold his first script for what would become the thriller film Hear No Evil (1993), his agent prompted him to develop a "calling-card" script that he could use to gain meetings with producers. Rubin began work on his idea of a man changing over eternal life but quickly realized that the idea was impractical because of the expense of depicting historical and future events. At this point, Rubin recalled a brief story concept he had written two years earlier that followed a man who would wake every morning to find it was the same day repeating. Rubin married the two ideas to create the outline for Groundhog Day. By portraying eternity as a repeating cycle instead of a straight line through history he eliminated the production cost of constantly changing settings.[4] He believed that the repetition also offered him more dramatic and comedic possibilities.[5]
Rubin opened a calendar and picked the next nearest holiday, February 2, Groundhog Day. He saw it as a date with story potential because it was a recognized holiday without much widespread attention. Rubin believed that people held a vague awareness of the holiday, on which a groundhog predicts the coming of spring. Even so, he believed few people outside Pennsylvania were aware that the actual festival takes place in the small town of Punxsutawney, something he became aware of through a writing job for a local phone company.[4] Setting the story in Punxsutawney provided a small area in which to trap Phil Connors, while reporting on the event gave the character a reason to visit. Rubin took the main character's name from Punxsutawney Phil.[4] He hoped the film could become a perennial holiday favorite like It's a Wonderful Life (1946) and A Charlie Brown Christmas (1965).[6][7]
Rubin spent eight weeks working on the story: seven making notes to define the rules and characters, and one writing the script.[4][5] He struggled with establishing a cause for the time loop, considering technological, magical, and celestial origins. He thought these methods were interchangeable, and that the cause was unimportant and could detract from the story elements he wanted to focus on. Rubin said that the lack of explanation made Phil's situation more relatable, as "none of us knows exactly how we got stuck here either."[4] He chose to begin the story in medias res, with Phil already caught in the time loop.[4] The first scene included Phil waking to "I Got You Babe", predicting the radio host banter and the actions of the hotel patrons, and attacking a pedestrian outside. Rubin thought this would intrigue an audience trying to understand how and why he is doing these things.[5] He chose "I Got You Babe" because it used a lot of repeating lines and was about love, which he felt were thematically resonant aspects.[8] He likened his original script to the 1949 British black comedy film Kind Hearts and Coronets, particularly the flippant way in which Phil's multiple suicides are shown.[4]
Rubin did not initially write the film as a broad comedy, considering it more whimsical. He found that the funnier elements were the easiest to think of; one of the earliest scenes he wrote was about Phil using his ever-increasing knowledge to seduce women.[5] Loops were also dedicated to Phil seeing how far he could get outside of Punxsutawney; inevitably he was always returned to the town.[9] Even so, the script focused much more on Phil's loneliness. He breaks the loop only after realizing that there are other lonely people, and that he can do good deeds to make them happier. Scenes in the finished film happened much earlier in Rubin's script, such as Phil driving over a cliff. The passage of time was also more distinct; Phil would track it by reading one page of a book per day, reaching his low point when he realizes he has run out of books. The original ending also featured a twist: Phil breaks his loop and then confesses his love to Rita. The perspective then becomes that of Rita, who rejects Phil's advance because she is not ready for love, and becoming trapped in a loop of her own.

Not a headcanon question, but why is Playing Nancy significant? I didn't really see it as bringing something to the plot but more a filler song that could have just had small dialogue. I'm just unsure if there's more to Nancy and the song than I'm seeing
(Sorry I’ve taking a little while to answer this, I just wanted to get all my thoughts together)
The song’s significance is thematic. It humanizes Nancy, someone who was just seen by Phil and the audience in Act One as a sexy prop for him to mess around with and dispose to get on with his character arc. This ties into how Act Two (as well as prior songs like Nobody Cares and One Day) shows everyone in Punxsutawney as being real people with their own lives and hopes and longings and not just objects surrounding Phil in his story, which ties into how he learns to care about them and show compassion and have an open mind.
To go further, Nancy’s song also fills the purpose of having another well-rounded female voice in the show besides Rita, and we also see a clear contrast between them and their experiences as women and dealing with gendered expectations and heteronormativity. This is important particularly because Phil has spent much of the show at that point being terrible to the women around him and having a strong female perspective throughout the narrative helps to keep it from becoming just about some asshole’s journey to enlightenment.
In One Day, Rita makes it very clear that she is not going to settle for less than she deserves. We respect her for being able to see through Phil’s BS and not letting him pressure her into anything she’s uncomfortable with. She places high value on her needs and boundaries and confidently asserts them. Nancy Taylor, on the other hand, isn’t that idealized role model. She’s the kind of girl one might say “had it coming”. She accepts being manipulated and used by shitty careless guys because 1) she has a pattern of being overly trusting and 2) she believes she doesn’t have the right to refuse. She doesn’t value herself and she gets easily duped and she doesn’t know how to get out of this cycle. She feels trapped endlessly pursuing empty relationships with men because it’s better than being alone and unloved and she’s been in that reality probably since puberty.
This show portrays both of those experiences as valid and doesn’t shit on Nancy or blame her for how society has messed her up, and both her and Rita Hanson are absolutely deserving of love and respect.
(And in my opinion she’s a closeted lesbian struggling with compulsory heterosexuality wooo)
In addition, her being stuck ties back to how Phil is stuck in the same day over and over and also stuck in the way he is as a person and how, as Rita says, everybody is stuck. There’s a fic I intend to write highlighting this parallel between them set before Hope where Phil and Nancy share another night together and get into conversation about some pretty deep stuff, like the ideas they internalized growing up and how it’s affected them as adults and their ability to have meaningful relationships. They were both taught something along the lines of “guys always want sex, girls always passively give it to them”, and it’s severely harmed them and turned sex into a compulsive coping mechanism for their feeling empty and dehumanized. At the time, Phil is unable to properly process this and it just fuels his spiral into self-loathing and suicidality. Later in the loop, I imagine he seeks Nancy out again with a clearer head and tries to help them both heal and free themselves as much as they can.
Soooo yeah! That’s why I love Playing Nancy and think it is very significant to the show. Of course, I do wish it had a bit of a better payoff, but Larry does seem like a sweet guy who will treat her right. If they don’t date (because, you know, she’s gay), they’ll probably be really good friends and it’d be good for her at any rate to have a healthy relationship with a guy who likes her as a person and cares about her interests. And I wish there was more visible growth in the way Phil treats her, which is what I want to address in my writing.

love that i said that as if i am able to leave well enough alone and leave it at that !!
(credit for this goes half to my dear @burningsilentlystrong because we just had some devastating discourse about this <3)
listen. LISTEN. tim adding this song as the opener for act ii is a VERY specific choice and here’s why:
1. the vibes of the show this far, while being kinda funny, all held that “hint of sadness” but THIS song is what REALLY shifts the tone to set itself apart from the musical in terms of actually setting out to tackle some of the deeper themes and meanings in the show.
playing nancy is the turning point.
this isn’t where the story ends, this is only where is changes.
we hear this song and we KNOW that some sad shit about to rip our hearts out.
2. this story is about dreaming. everyone here wants more than what they have. they are happy enough, but it isn’t enough to be “happy enough.” and that it’s okay to want more. that when the world tries to make you settle, you can demand more than “succumbing and settling.”
frankly, the presence of one line ALONE is enough to demonstrate the importance of this song:
“who am i to dream of better?”
this is the line that ruins my life the most. she feels guilty for wanting more, for dreaming of being happier than she is, but there is something empty and chasmic that reaches into her chest and it’s eating her alive.
it’s okay to dream of more. it’s okay to want to be more than happy enough.
3. one of the things that makes phil’s growth difficult is his inability to see others as more than objects he can use to fill the void in his chest. he tricks nancy into sleeping with him, likely multiple times, and even the other residents after a point stop seeing who she could be and the hopes she has in life. this goes doubly so for the audience. we see nancy as just another prop that phil messed with on his “journey” and forget that she is a real person too, that there is more to her than the role she has in act i, and the role she has in the story, and the role she has in phil’s path to not being a shithead. seeing someone who was directly and deeply affected by the actions of our protagonist is so important to OUR journey of what this story means at all.
playing nancy reminds us that a. there is more to people than the mask they wear in public (which is big for phil considering this man acts like a dick to hide his depression) and also that your actions have consequences on the people around you. and that even things that seem small to us can be a lot bigger to someone around us.
characters like her are also so often forgotten, especially in the story of some man. the love interest gets to say her piece but the one night stand and the person who was hurt earlier is erased, her pain forgotten. as if she didn’t matter to us, either, let alone the protagonist.
4. nancy also MAJORLY acts as a narrative foil to rita ?? the last song we heard was about rita dreaming of more and hoping that some day she will get more than what she has (one day) and then again 3 songs after this one is another song rita sings about wanting more than this, about dreams and hopes and regrets. nancy taylor is what rita hanson could have been. if rita succumbed and settled down, or decided she was sick of being lonely, she and nancy would be so close in terms of arc. both women were told to be or present themselves in a certain way, and their slightly different interpretations of what to do with that brainwashing is what led to their diverging paths in the story. rita said i Refuse to listen and nancy decided being alone was worse, let the brainwashing and gaslighting get to her. they were both told that they were “put here to be stared at” and their choices after that are what set them apart.
5. also ! considering this story focuses so heavily on community, on friendship and having people who care about you, how silly would it be if there wasn’t any community engagement? if the people of punxsutawney don’t ever tell their stories, then the message of community falls flat. it feels empty and pathetic and frankly meaningless.
6. i touched on this before but like. playing nancy also shows the duality of us as human beings. that the masks that we show others are rarely how we feel on the inside, and just because we seem happy and confident (rita and larry talking about phil on one of the suicide days) doesn’t mean anything. this is so important in real life too, with the whole psychology term that i cannot seem to remember right now? where you attribute someone’s actions to their personality as opposed to their mood. we think we know people from our interactions, but we don’t, and this further pushes the narrative of being wary of the consequences of your actions, and how your views of people will eventually convince them that they can’t be anything more. nancy being used over and over again makes her think she doesn’t deserve any better, that this is as good as it will get.
7. while her story doesn’t have much effect on phil himself, it’s vital for the audience to understand the point of the story. and the biggest point of groundhog day as a whole is that it is never too late to try again, to start over, to be better than you were. it is never to late to dream of something better.
god i could go on but i am running out of words already organized into coherent thought. everything else is a jumble of hysterical sobbing and yelling in rage that some people don’t see the importance of this track.
feel free to add more if you wish ! thanks for coming 2 my tedtalk.
girl help once agin thinking about how Vital playing nancy is to groundhog day the musical..

Groundhog Day the Musical is based on the extremely popular film from 1993 with the music and lyrics written by Tim Minchin. A show which started out in the West End and did fantastically well at the Olivier Awards, I had just missed it back in October as it closed a few days before I had a trip. Therefore I could not resist heading to see the show when out in New York, so pleased I did as well.
Andy Karl in the leading role is absolutely outstanding from start to finish. It cannot be an easy show to perform in with the same day being repeated over and over again. This certainly gave it that fantastic comedic edge though with the audience really being able to find the funny side of it all. You probably have to have seen the film though to really appreciate certain parts of it and to really understand the story.
The original songs are pretty impressive with Tim Minchin really adding in his unique style. A slight warning should be that it certainly is not for young children. It has a very good sleek feeling to it as it flies through the day over and over again. Adding the musical numbers at brilliant times as Phil Connors is attempting to work out just why he is stuck reliving the 2nd of February. In that you know horrible little town that he totally hated. It is amusing to see what he then decided to do on different days and that is something that makes you wonder what types of things would you get up to if it didn’t really matter as you would wake up being the only person who knew what had previously happened.
It is wacky at times but in well such a great way, seeing the truck being driven across the stage was well pretty hilarious. I loved the style of the music (and have since brought the Broadway cast recording) and thought it was very heartfelt at times as well. I am therefore extremely pleased that we managed to get tickets to see this show. Had a brilliant view of the stage as well, which obviously makes attending the theatre even better.
Andy Karl was a truly terrific leading man and deserves all of the credit for how much energy he places within this show from the opening moment to curtain call. I really was blown away by him and it has to be the best male performance I have seen in a very long time.
Something either unique or strange about this show has to be that while you know the story (I am assuming everyone has seen the film) the songs are all brand new. I hadn’t listened to any of it before the show. I actually really enjoy that about a new musical, being able to experience all of the songs on stage for the first time. It means you are in for plenty of surprises. I certainly hope Groundhog Day keeps going on Broadway and that we have it back in the UK at some point as well, I think this is a show that would do very well on tour!

((ooc)) top 5 GHD characters?
❄ meme :: put “top 5” anything in my ask and i will answer ok go :: accepting! ❄
{ This was weirdly difficult once I got past the first two characters, so thank you to @philconnors for letting me annoy her with my reasoning before I finalised this one xD Also, not spoiler free, so if you’re avoiding them before you see the show please be cautious! }
{ I might have cheated. I’m not sorry.
Phil Connors & Rita Hanson :: Joint first place, obviously. This can’t be a surprise, right? I was initially going to put Phil in first place and Rita in second, but that really didn’t feel right. I love them both equally, both for overlapping and entirely different reasons.
Phil is exactly the sort of character I tend to like (I’m a sucker for any variation on the ‘jerk with a heart of gold’ trope, what can I say?), and it’s a testament to Andy’s performance that I rooted for him as much as I did the first time I saw the musical (as I think I’ve mentioned before, not a huge fan of the film (despite being a Bill Murray fan)). The transition he undergoes during the musical is incredibly moving, and I struggle to recall a character I’ve wanted to see succeed as much as I do with Phil even now I’ve seen the show so many times!
And the fact I adore Rita this much is nothing short of astonishing when you consider how much I dislike the nothing of a character she is in the film. The musical’s Rita is such a well-rounded, interesting, funny, strong, vibrant, emotional, capable woman - she’s a joy to watch, and a joy to write. She’s not just a cut-out ‘perfect woman’ for Phil to win at the end of the story; we learn so much about her, and the fact that they end up together is her choice, based on the man he’s evolved into - the man she’s got to know on that last iteration of Groundhog Day. That’s really important to me.
Fred Kleiser & Debbie Johnson :: Joint second place, because how on earth could I split these two up? Honestly, I ship Frebbie as hard as I ship Phita xD I think they’re a really sweet ‘beta couple’, and their interactions are the perfect balance of sweet and really funny. They’re even better in the Broadway version - Debbie’s a little… Softer now (the ‘doorknob to my heart’ line used to just be her smacking him in the chest and going ‘it’s perfect’ and I think that works a lot better?) - still a woman who knows what she wants out of her relationship, though! But I love the fact that even though they’re very minor characters you get a good insight into the dynamic of their relationship. Also, in the diner scene before Everything About You, their track as Phil is running out of the diner and the scene is changing is absolutely hilarious: if you’re on the front row you can hear Freddie just saying something like ‘Oh, I’m Debbie, and I love my sister’s ring more than anything!’ with his hand stuck out in front of him like he’s examining an engagement ring, while she’s shouting ‘Do you really think I’m that shallow?!’. It was just a really hilarious little moment to notice.
Ned Ryerson & Nancy Taylor :: I told you I was cheating! But I can’t choose between these two, either. I really love how the musical takes two characters who just exists as stereotypes in the film, and makes them into much more rounded characters. I’m in the camp of people who find the film’s Ned irritating rather than funny, but in the musical I’m always genuinely moved by the reveal in the second act. Both Andrew Langtree and John Sanders play him incredibly well - there’s a nice balance between the pushy, enthusiastic, overly friendly insurance salesman we meet at the beginning, and the grieving, widowed father we learn he is in act two. And (while I think a little more could’ve been done) I love the way Nancy gets developed too. We all know the stereotype she’s meant to be, and getting to see her beyond her ‘role’ as Phil’s one night stand is important. I also really love the little moment between her and Larry during Seeing You. Georgia Hagen and Rebecca Faulkenberry both play Nancy with a lot of warmth - there’s sweet moment during Punxsutawney Rock where Nancy is teaching Mrs Lancaster how to dance like her, which I always love.
Doris :: I rooted for Doris so hard at the end of Philanthropy the first time I saw the show than it kind of cemented her place in my heart. Whether she’s being played by Emma Lindars at the Old Vic or Rheaume Crenshaw on Broadway, it pays to keep an eye on Doris whenever there’s a diner scene going on - the facial expressions that get pulled (especially during the diner scene where Phil is in the fur coat) are stellar, and some interactions with Jeff in the back of scenes can be really sweet. I also adore Rheaume’s headcanon that she owns the diner.
Jeff :: He could be on the list for ‘Jeepers, Debbie!’ alone tbh. But (while Phil outing him to his dad is problematic, and I do get why some people don’t like it), I think his story is quite sweet. He goes from being closeted to openly dancing with his father’s Deputy at banquet, and it might be a small and not entirely perfectly done story, it’s one of my favourite little parts of the show. And also, as with Doris, it’s worth keeping an eye on him when he’s in the back of a scene - especially when he’s cleaning cutlery behind the counter during the fur coat scene.
Honourable Mentions :: Larry, Buster, Mrs Lancaster, Chubby Man / Jonathan, the Sheriff & the Deputy, and Gus & Ralph.
#❄ ( ANSWERED ASK :: anything you need; just ask ) ☼#❄ ( ANSWERED OOC :: and i would be a lot more zen ) ☼#❄ ( ANONYMOUS ASK :: not quite my type ) ☼#❄ ( OOC :: out of sticky buns ) ☼#❄ ( ABOUT THE MUN :: and weird is fine; but not all the time ) ☼

Groundhog Day The Musical (Original Broadway Cast Recording) (2017)
This has been a hard piece to write. For the past couple days I’ve had an open Tumblr editor with a title, image, and closing sentence; a collection of thoughts whirring through my brain, and no real idea on how to cohesively get them across.
You see, the problem is: I adored Groundhog Day (music and lyrics by Tim Minchin) when I saw it at the Old Vic late last year. My perception was clouded, no doubt, due to my love of the movie, but I honestly found Andy Karl’s Phil Connors to be a delightfully charming asshole, and the overall production was a funny and dark musical exploration of the source material.
Here, my thoughts haven’t changed in some of those respects. Karl’s voice is still a perfectly-pitched blend of smug, endearing, detestable and likeable, and the Broadway Cast are all very well-suited to their roles. They perform exactly as they should, with nary a step out of place.
It that sounds like faint praise, perhaps it is. But I don’t think that blame lies at the feet of Karl or the Cast; I think the reason I feel so conflicted is because, while the musical was a triumph in my mind, I think the music itself is a bit... self-indulgent. Self-important. Self-aggrandising. It’s a musician and lyricist who knows how clever he is, and seeks - as often as possible - to ensure that you’re aware also.
And don’t get me wrong, the switch between styles throughout the piece are impressive, but ultimately they feel soulless. Hearing traditional ballads followed by classic rock tracks (complete with Axl Rose-alike backing vocals) is fun to note, but... well, who cares about the range of styles, if you’re not doing anything interesting with them? Take Hope, for example, the aforementioned rock number: on stage, it’s accompanied with an incredibly inventive series of suicides, juxtaposing the message of Hope and Never Giving Up with the quest to end one’s life; somehow, it’s both an auditory and visual delight. In audio form, it’s just a relatively shitty rock song.
I think this encapsulates a part of what I find so underwhelming with the Cast Album: its lack of anything interesting to say, or even any attempt therein. I’m well aware this isn’t a fair comparison, but take Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Hamilton and the line “I imagine death so much it feels more like a memory.” Even now, a year after first hearing that line, I get chills just typing it. Compare that to a couple of Minchin’s Groundhog Day lines (from Connors opening line in Day One and If I Had My Time Again, respectively):
“Lumpy bed, ugly curtains, pointless erection.”
“I once masturbated seven times [...] in the bath [...] in one evening [...] It wasn’t fun but still, [...] a man my age [...] it’s nice to know I can.”
Of course, you’re more than welcome to say that I am picking and choosing two entirely different styles of lines, from two entirely different styles of musical, and my thoughts can be dismissed. But to try and pull you back around, compare Connors’ first line with Alexander Hamilton’s: “My name is Alexander Hamilton, and there’s a million things I haven’t done, but just you wait.” One is clearly an (unfunny, unnecessary) joke, and the other is a statement of intent, a character expressing a need and objective. It tells you everything you need to know about Hamilton’s ambition, whereas... well, maybe “...pointless erection” is also an encapsulation of Connors’ character: in which case, he’s unfunny and uncharming. Why bother spending time with him?
This is coming out a lot more negatively than I think I intended initially, which is a shame. But the truth is, the more I think about it, the more I think the Cast Album is a boring and unnecessary musical album. Sure, it’s well-produced and well-sung, but it isn’t saying anything of note.
The one last thing I’ll mention, and I do hope this entire piece has followed some sort of logical order, refers once again to the comedy. While I’m aware that not all comedy is made for everyone (and certainly not made for Me), I’ve been struck on my last few listens of the disregard and distaste that Minchin has for some of his characters.
I think alternative therapy, herbal remedies, acupuncture and hydrotherapy are all nonsense, by and large. I am a firm believer in science, medicine, and the scientific method. But Minchin has Connors visit various such ‘therapists’ in Stuck, and they exist purely to be the butt of bad jokes. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with exposing ‘medical’ frauds, or finding their scams to be a source of humour, but to have an author so clearly dislike his own creations leaves one wondering ‘What’s the point of listening to this?’ The overwhelming sensation becomes one of negativity, not humour. If even the author cannot find anything likeable about them, or suggest any drive or intention behind their actions, why should we make the effort to listen?
The unfortunate thing is that, in proofreading this piece, I can’t necessarily find anything more positive I wish to say. Barrett Doss’s portrayal of Phil’s love interest Rita Hanson is well-performed, and I haven’t hated listening to the entire album over the last few days at all - if anything I’ve enjoyed it fairly enough. But it feels like an Album of the Week for me, and it’s nothing I think I’ll miss.
You can check out the album for yourself over on Spotify (and, presumably, your streaming service of choice). And hey, let me know what you think or how I’m wrong. Is there anything else to be said?

Starring Julianna Margulies, Matt Czuchry, Christine Baranski, and others, “The Good Wife” has been one of the smartest, most well-crafted shows on network television since 2009.
While several famous actors have appeared in small roles on the show (Michael J. Fox and Nathan Lane among them), we’re looking at the actors who’ve surprised us with their roles as lawyers, criminals, judges, and the likes.
Who’s been your favorite “Good Wife” guest star? (If you don’t have one, that’s fine. But if you don’t have one because you don’t watch “The Good Wife,” call in sick tomorrow and get started!)
Matthew Perry The “Friends” star had a small arc during the show’s third and fourth seasons as Mike Kresteva, who runs again Peter (Chris Noth) for Illinois governor, and who Peter epically punches in the face.
David M. Russell/CBS
Jonathan Groff The former Backstage cover star and “Looking” actor graced “The Good Wife” on the Season 3 episode “Live from Damascus.” Jonathan Groff plays Jimmy Fellner, the brother of a girl who was captured while studying Arabic in Syria.
Laura Benanti On the Season 5 episode “Tying the Knot,” Tony winner Laura Benanti plays Renata Ellard, the most recent lover of “The Good Wife’s” most devious killer, Colin Sweeney. When Alicia (Julianna Margulies) stops by the lovebirds’ engagement party to get legal papers signed, she finds herself at a murder scene again, and Benanti is not as sweet and innocent as she seems.
Martha Plimpton Though Martha Plimpton is a recurring character, she’s just too hysterical to ignore. As defense attorney Patti Nyholm, Plimpton uses her character’s pregnancy and motherhood as a tactic for delaying hearings, being late, etc. Plimpton took home an Emmy in 2009 for outstanding guest actress in a drama series for the role.
Rita Wilson Rita Wilson pops up every once in a while as Viola Walsh, a competing defense lawyer and acquaintance of Diane’s (Christine Baranski). And when Walsh’s character comes into town from California, you know there’s gonna be trouble.
Jeff Neira/CBS
Kelli Giddish The “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” actor guest stars on four episodes of the show as Sophia Russo, a private sector investigator who’s romantically involved with Kalinda (Archie Panjabi).
Nestor Carbonell In the Season 5 episode “The Deep Web,” Nestor Carbonell plays a flirtatious juror with whom Alicia later goes out to lunch.
Aaron Tveit The “Graceland” actor took his turn on “The Good Wife,” as lawyer Spencer Zschau in the Season 3 episode “Executive Order 13224.”
Audra McDonald Six-time Tony winner Audra McDonald play Liz Lawrence on the Season 4 episode “Runnin’ with the Devil.” As Alicia’s law school nemesis, McDonald’s character goes up against her in a case involving Lemond Bishop (Mike Colter).
David M. Russell/CBS
Linda Emond This two-time Tony nominee appears in three episodes of “The Good Wife” (thus far) as Judge Leora Kuhn, a military judge whom Alicia argues in front of, and later helps on a case.
Kate Burton The “Scandal” and “Grey’s Anatomy” actor portrays Chief Justice of Illinois Victoria Adler who respects Diane deeply and tries to help her become a judge, though she later retracts the offer.
America Ferrera The actor formerly known as Ugly Betty appears in four episodes as Natalie Flores, a college student who worked for Peter’s state’s attorney opponent Wendy Scott-Carr (Anika Noni Rose). When Eli (Alan Cumming) tries to expose her as an illegal immigrant, he finds something attractive in her instead. The whole unrequited love situation brings out the surprisingly endearing side of Eli.
JP Filo
Parker Posey Parker Posey plays Eli’s ex-wife for three episodes throughout Season 3. The “House of Yes” actor is a perfect match to Eli, making us wish the two would rekindle their love.
Amy Sedaris Amy Sedaris licks whipped cream off of Alan Cumming’s fingers. And yes, you read that correctly. Sedaris plays Stacie Hall for three episodes during Season 3, a lobbyist who appears to be Eli’s match. However, when she becomes his ex-wife’s campaign manager, her manipulative (and sexual) tricks are too powerful for Eli to fight.
Bebe Neuwirth What kind of show would “The Good Wife” be without a Bebe Neuwirth guest role? The two-time Emmy winner plays one of the many judges we see our favorite defense attorneys argue in front of.
David M. Russell/CBS
F. Murray Abraham Most recently seen in Wes Anderson’s “The Grand Budapest Hotel” and on “Homeland,” F. Murray Abraham plays Burl Preston on “The Good Wife,” a big shot lawyer from Los Angeles.
Lisa Edelstein The “House” actor appears in three episodes of “The Good Wife” including “Get a Room,” “Feed the Rat,” and “Marthas and Caitlins.”
Eric Bogosian Eric Bogosian spends three episodes on the show in Season 5 as an agent with the Office of Public integrity who’s determined to prove someone rigged Peter’s election for governor of Illinois.
CBS
Gillian Jacobs The “Community” star guest-starred on “The Good Wife” before the Emmy noms and critical acclaim. Gillian Jacobs plays Sonia on the pilot episode!
Jerry Stiller The “King of Queens” actor made an appearance as one of the show’s many judges. (Among them are Denise O’Hare, David Paymer, Peter Riegert, and Jeffrey Tambor, to name a few.) Stiller plays Judge Felix Afterman on the Season 2 episode “Silver Bullet.”
Christina Ricci In the Season 4 episode “Anatomy of a Joke,” Christina Ricci plays Therese Dodd, a vulgar comedian who never apologizes for anything. When she gets sued for taking her top off on live TV (supposedly to perform a breast exam), the network decides to sue her for damages. However, the case is only made more difficult for Alicia and Cary (Matt Czuchry) when she can’t keep her potty mouth closed.
Sarah Silverman Most recently with a guest-starring role on “Masters of Sex,” Sarah Silverman was a “Good Wife” guest star as well. In a part so perfectly fitting with her unapologetic/often sexual stand-up routines, Silverman plays Stephanie Engler, a woman who runs a website that allows users to have affairs with random matches.
Jeff Neira/CBS
Lily Rabe The “American Horror Story” actor has a teeny, tiny role on “The Good Wife.” As Petra Moritz, a reporter first appearing in the show’s second season, Rabe’s role is the kind of quick take that makes you say, “Is that Lily Rabe?!?!”
Matt Letscher Currently recurring on “Castle” and “Boardwalk Empire,” Matt Letscher guest-starred on “The Good Wife” on the Season 2 episode “Two Courts.” Letscher plays former campaign manager Adam Boras who attempts to go over Eli’s head and bring Peter big cash donors to his cash-poor campaign.
Hunter Parrish In the Season 5 episode “Dramatics, Your Honor,’ Hunter Parrish plays…I…I can’t. This one’s too painful for any fan of the show to discuss. See why here.

Richard Kind Currently on Fox’s “Gotham,” Richard Kind first guest-starred in one of the most pivotal and nail-biting episodes of “The Good Wife” as Judge Alan Davies on the Season 5 episode, “The Next Day”; it’s the one after the shit hits the fan, as any “Good Wife” fan remembers.
Tracy Thoms Known for playing Joanne in “Rent,” Tracy Thoms appears on one episode of the show (Season 4’s “Runnin’ with the Devil”) as Lemond Bishop’s sister, Judy.
Corey Stoll Most recently seen in “This Is Where I Leave You,” the “House of Cards” actor plays Collin Grant in the second episode of “The Good Wife.”
Wallace Shawn Every so often, Wallace Shawn (“Toy Story”) pops up as Lemond Bishop’s (the biggest drug dealer in Chicago) personal (and most definitely crooked) attorney. Courtesy of CBS
Kyle MacLachlan In two Season 4 episodes, Kyle MacLachlan (“Twin Peaks” is coming back!) play Josh Perotti who has Eli on tape committing a felony regarding political donations. He and David LaGuardia (Hamish Linklater) offer to make Eli a deal if he wears a wire and gets Peter confessing to the crime as well.
Kristin Chenoweth As Peggy Byrne in two Season 4 episodes, this Tony winner is a political reporter who gets a bit too personal with her questions but is quick to quiet reporters when they dig into her personal life.
Jason Biggs Before his epic “Orange Is the New Black” comeback, Jason Biggs appeared on two episodes of “The Good Wife” as Dylan Stack in Seasons 3 and 4. He first posed as the lawyer for the creator of online currency Bitcoin, but it’s later discovered that he’s one of its three inventors.
David M. Russell/CBS
Miranda Cosgrove On the Season 2 episode “Bad Girls,” the actor formerly known as Carly Shay (“iCarly”), plays Alicia’s pop star client Sloan Burchfield who’s accused of attempted murder after allegedly driving drunk.
Tamara Tunie Amidst her 14 years playing Dr. Melinda Warner on “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” Tamara Tunie guest-starred on one Season 4 episode of the hit CBS show as Serafina Norvy where the lawyers battle a West Nile Virus case.
Bryce Pinkham Tony nominee for “A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder” Bryce Pinkham plays Dr. Hanson on the Season 1 episode “Unplugged,” about a case involving the wife of a comatose musician.
Pablo Schreiber The “Orange Is the New Black” villain appears on the Season 2 episode “Ham Sandwich” as Gregory Mars. The episode follows Lemond Bishop’s divorce, Kalinda’s grand jury subpoena, and Peter’s campaign (The first one!).
