Tumblr media
Welcome to my Blog, i hope you'll enjoy your stay. In this post, I have summarized all the information and links you will need to properly navigate this blog.
I'm currently writing a Pokémon AU Webnovel called Ages of Ruin. It tells the tale of the far future, where humans dissapeared due to a mysterious event in the past called the first Cataclism. Recently the second cataclism hit the world and now our team of protagonists have to navigate this newly dangerous world while slowly discovering just how much this second cataclism affected it.
This Story will be suplimented with Worldbuilding posts and a collection of Short Stories called Tales of Origin. These will tell Stories of how the world of Ages of Ruin came to be the way it is and give additional information on Gods and Legends of this world.
And with that out of the way, I hope you like my stories and have a nice day.
(Should Tumblr break the links again please just shout me an ask and I will fix that asap. It happens from time to time)

The list of names
*scary music playing* Ok, guys, in the light of American Middle Eastern policy, that has once again brought me to tears, I decided to do something a bit happier (this is me trying to influence my followers to read the news and fight for the right thing and all that jazz). I’ve got a lot of asks recently, mostly from people new to the world of CC, about which creators are the best, so I’ve made this little list of the creators I download and use the most. This is not in any way a complete collection, I might have forgotten someone (and there’s also plenty of creators I haven’t discovered yet). Also, these are all build creators, mainly creating alpha CC. Please feel free to add to this list. Also also, the description I’ve used for the artists are totally my own making, so if you are a creator and feel like I am describing your work in an unfair way, go ahead and punch me in the face.  If I was a new simmer, I would check out these creators:  Retired: MXIMS - Makes modern, real life furniture with the best quality. Has many downloads left on their website.  MINCSIMS - Similar to MXIMS (with some amazing collabs), also with a beautiful talent for doors and windows. Not many objects left in orbit, but google is your friend.  DAER0N - Done everything from noodles to palms, but the recent Daer0n I would describe as gold, dark and modern, with 3D modeling skills out of this world. Retired, and much of the old stuff is gone, but some can be found at bloomingrosy.  DOX - Similar to Daer0n with a slightly stricter, more wooden approach. The most underrated one of the retired giants. Has some downloads left on their website. ANBS - Super clean aesthetic. Modern, real life furniture. Many downloads left on their website. SLYD - Mostly known as a CAS creator, but has the amazing shoes and bags available as decor. All downloads left on the website.  HVIKIS - Wallpapers and wall art. All downloads left on the website. VIIKIITA - Recolors to die for. Not many objects left in orbit, but google is your friend. Active (I think. I hope. I don’t know):  ARSBOTANICA - Previously simshamlet. Does really lovely, vintage aesthetic perfume bottles and amazing flowers. SLOX - A personal favorite. Modern, I’d say. And realistic. But often with objects you didn’t even know you needed, that ends up being the main inspiration for the whole build. Like some folded shirts, or a stack of books. 13PUMPKIN -  A long with Artvitalex this is the best wood creator in the community. The sets are kind of like “small-lovely-family-home”-style, but can be used in big, modern builds with equally outstanding results.  WONDYMOON - My by far most used creator. The most organized one too, I’d say. All sets match eachother, and are easy to find (and are all named by elements, this guy is a rock star). PYSZNYDESIGN - The Kilburn set is to die for.  MEINKATZ - Literally replicas of real life furniture, with their history and all. Honestly the coolest thing ever. Also, a really nice person.  PRALINESIMS - The best floor and wall creator, hands down. I don’t know if this is really the person I should tag tho, so I’ll tag @cross-design and hope for the best because I honestly still don’t know who is who. I love them both tho. THE TSR GIANTS: SEVERINKA, KARDOFE, UNG999, SIMMAN123, PILAR, ARTVITALEX, ANGELA, DOT, BUFFSUMM, SHINO and NYNAEVE - Yes, a lot of the creators I mention here are active on TSR and a lot of my TSR giants are active elsewhere, but I still, maybe arbitrary, like to put these under the TSR flag because they represent that wonderful vibe of big sets, certain room types and signature colors. PEACEMAKER - a true legend. Some of the CC is borderline MM, but that is what makes them so perfect. They go with both themes. MIO - This is the first creator I downloaded from and they will always have a special place in my heart. Brilliant conversions, flower sets, seating, everything.  NOVVVAS - A way too humble person that claims she is not the best in the game, when she truly is out of this world. RIGHTHEARTED - who I have been referring to as neiden my whole life because I am an idiot.  TINGELINGLATER - Does a lot of things but blessed all of us with windows and since then I am in love.  ANYE - Pinkbox Anye, to be correct. Lovely person. Lovely sets. Unique eyes. Adore this one.  FOREVERDESIGNS - Will literally transform your bedroom. And kitchen. And life.  BLACKMOJITOS - Build sets and sexy, stunning posters (and a basket every now and then). Also up for commissions, I just noticed. Go throw money at her. She is amazing.  KAI-HANA - Has a totally unique style, where everything is alpha, but still has a beautiful, clayish touch to it. Underrated.  AROUNDTHESIMS - A bit on the MM side, so if you’re looking for that MM/alpha mix, this is for you. Extremely productive. Does everything and more.  CHERRY-SIMS - A part from the CC, this is also the best picture editor I’ve ever seen. I am a huge fan!  CONCEPTDESIGN - Did someone say trees? YUMIA - Soft flowers, old school touch, vintage AGGRESSIVEKITTEN - Literally killed half the community with the recent brutalism set, which without a doubt will be voted best CC of 2020. Also, where else would you go for both beautiful, vintage objects AND a tarot card reading? Weirdly obsessed with seals. Makes amazing lots. I love you.  DSCO - I gave up trying to spell this creators full name after the sixth attempt. I would describe the CC as cute. But not in the condescending (that I could spell) way. More in a bad-ass-I-need-all-of-these-objects-kind-of-way! KKB - My ignorant and uneducated ass wants to call it Korean, and I am sorry if this isn’t the right way to describe anything. Soft, pastel but at the same time very cool, with rattan and wood.  DR GREENIE - Former Green Girl. Mostly MM, but has made some of my most used decor objects.  HELEN - Extremely productive. Does everything.  NIKADEMA - Has made my favorite sink!  PQSIMS - Makes sets. Usually light wood.  LUNATICAVILLAGE (2SIS) - Another underrated favorite. Everyone should go here and show as much love as possible! LAVI3ENROSE - A creator that entered my world quite recently. Art deco. Bronze. Gold. And the best wrapped Christmas presents of 2019.  DDAENG SIMS - Another giant that recently changed their name (used to be dreamteamsims).  FELIXANDRE - The best historical creator (as in making epic shit that would create the most wonderful castle). Sometimes a bit on the MM side with the furniture, and that contrast makes it, in my eyes, even better.  SIMCREDIBLE - Sets. Color matching. Often light and modern. I use their decor stones in every single one of my .  SOLORIYA - MM creator. But even for us alpha bitches there are wonderful stuff (I think this is the case for most MM artists, I just don’t know so many of them).  XELENN - Also does literally everything. One can scroll this blog for hours.  OWL-PLUMBOB - Amazing build objects.  SANOYSIMS - A long with MXIMS, I’d say this is one of the most “realistic” artists.  WINNER9 - To me, this creator is all about the amazing wall art. But of course they make other stunning objects too. Marble tables, anyone? SJAMBOKSIM - My most used concrete walls (and I use concrete A LOT).  AIFIRSA - Totally different style from everyone else. Absolutely love this aesthetic.  VIVIAN STUDIO - This sounds weird, but their onions are the best object in my game. Don’t judge.  HEURRS - A quite new creator who blew my mind with some recent candles and earned my first reblog since 456 BC. Love you.  I am forgetting so, so many. Please, I sometimes can’t even remember my own name, so don’t feel hurt if I missed you. PLEASE comment your favorite creators below! Where would you advice new simmers to start looking for good CC?  Love you guys!!!

Why Hey There, Stranger.
Guess this is the convenient place to put my “TELL US ABOUT YOU” *insert-generic-introductory-paragraph-here* section goes so uh. Yeah.
My name (if you didn’t read the name on my blog already) is Tom, but for years I’ve gone on social media and across business platforms under the name ShaydensDoodle. It was formally ShaydensSketches but.. I got bored. I’m an illustrator who has been posting and selling work online for about 2-3 years now, its fluctuated in success so instead of saying ‘ShaydensDoodle’ is a ‘Brand’ I just say its a comforter blanket I use online (wow edgy). I’m originally from the middle of no where right next to ‘I don’t want strangers stalking my home address’ avenue and down ‘I really don’t want to meet you criminals and cyber stalkers and I’ll decline the unsolicited genital photos’ street... also known as somewhere near Cambridge in the U.K.
I really love coastal towns, which is ironic given now I live and practice as far from any coast as most places in England which for an Island is impressive. Sadly. But thankfully there are a bunch of cool artists on this island I look up to, go check out Beck Carlton (Bear_Patrol), Jessica Sharville and Hiffy Ulrich just as some examples of British illustrators. But one of my all time illustration heroes is Frannerd, the way she tackles her anxieties in her daily life and her path of being a freelance illustrator is amazing, her colour palette really stands out to me too from an aesthetic POV.
Oh yeah did I say I’m an illustration student with crappy humour I really can’t remember and reading what I already wrote feels like more pain than its worth, but lately my work has been developing in all kinds of directions. I mainly take inspiration from old video game designs and concept artists, but my work leans towards children’s book illustration naturally, I’ll dump some doodles on here at some stage I’m sure!  I love animation and working with 3D which is weird since most people think illustration is 2D drawings, but I’m here to change your minds, or not depending on how passionate or ‘Anti-anything-but-2D-being-classed-as-illustration’ you are
In my own practice I am mostly known (’known’ as if I’m the next David Shrigley or Gemma Correll) for live-streaming while I’m working, and also sharing my work in various depths of the internet such as instagram. I also have a monthly thing called Patreon where I share out my art as prints like a subscription service. I really don’t want to force more antagonistic promotion down your throats so I’ll hold back on that for now. But follow my instagram @shaydensdoodle for a basic intro to my work! *Badum Tssss*
Also my work tends to be pretty surreal/exploratory/left wing AKA Racists, TERFS, Misogynists and LGBTQIA+phobes please stay away the door is out the window and 3 stories down. Thanks.
-Tom
PS below is an example of my work I did recently, just as a ‘taster’ I’m hoping as this half of the year goes on at uni, my work improves with it and who knows, maybe I’ll discover what I want to do with my career.

legitimate advice for new phandom blogs
hey !! so i know sometimes posts like ‘RULES FOR THE PHANDOM XD’ are made and they’re all like “numba one. dan is a squishy bean respect this uwu” but this isn’t gonna be like that lol. im just going to list a few actual things that might help people new to the phandom learn about and become integrated into the community! of course these aren’t ‘rules’ and u dont have to listen to any of it ofc,,, im not here to control ur blog, just here to say what people normally do. feel free to rb whether u are a new blog or not, ill appreciate it either way!
(NOTE: PLS TELL ME IF ANY OF THE LINKS DONT WORK AND ILL FIX THEM PERIODICALLY!)
italicized text is defined in the glossary at the bottom!
1. be interactive!
here, unique to our corner of timmy darn communism, we have a lot of like virtual traditions that everyone knows. these help you to make friends and also grow ur blog with some new mutuals. here are some examples.
networks: networks, or nets, are a sort of selective gc, usually with a theme or concept that it’s based around, in which all who wish to be part of fill out an application form that determines whether they get in. this is kinda the one with the most work, as u also have to make a group blog and info post, but it’s definitely worth it. i have made my closest friends in nets (such as @phleurnet which i birthed), and a lot of people on here would say the same. if you want to know more or apply, my friend diana runs an update blog @phandomnets! (examples, these are all open btw: x x x)
meetups: meetups are not in real life, don’t worry. a meetup is when someone organizes a specific time at which we all post thing around a certain theme! for instance, on halloween on tuesday, my friend milo hosted a halloween meetup. usually people post selfies but if u are uncomfortable with that, u can post art, music, or anything else related to the theme. a blog called @phandommeetupwatch keeps track of these! (examples, all happening soon/just happened: x x x)
follow forevers: a follow forever is a big celebration post when u reach a follower count milestone, no matter 50 or 5k. u tag all of the blogs you love, and they reblog it to appreciate u! it’s really positive and shows people how their work has paid off. usually people are tagged in alphabetical order, and sometimes people bold their favorites but the stylization is up to u. (recent examples: x x x)
milestone activities: sometimes people do things for their followers when they reach a follower count that involves their followers requesting something! there are many many forms of this type of thing. a common one is blog rates, in which there is a set template and the blogger rates each blog that sends in an ask using the template (info post ex: x; rate ex: x). there are also url edits (x), name/url moodboards (x), and more. u can certainly come up w an idea of ur own, being creative is great!
talk to people: that’s right dude!!! ye!!! u can message a blog u think is cool, or send an ask if u think something they made or are talking about is interesting, or add something sweet in the tags (more on etiquette later) when u rb their post. additionally, sometimes people stir up discourse, and u should participate in it if u want (past discourse examples: x x). u can also send asks when people reblog ask games, which are a list of questions with a theme (new one of mine ex: x).
2. play around with your blog!
customizing your blog can start giving you what we call a branding, making you distinguished from other bloggers. this can include everything from as simple as using an icon to coding your own about page.
themes: a blog can be way more appealing if it is aesthetically pleasing. admittedly, i often follow people just because of the smoothness of their mobile theme. a mobile theme is rather easy to construct as u can do it on ur own with a phone. it is how ur blog looks on a phone. although u don’t have to do this, i recommend sticking to two to four colors on ur theme and avoiding stuffing it with a lot of bright things because it can distract from content. additionally, bloggers often make their descriptions short and succinct. (my fav mobiles: x x x.) on a pc, your blog theme can be customized completely on html, meaning there is a lot of freedom. u don’t have to learn to code for this, bc u can find free themes anywhere, just search ‘free tumblr themes’ on google. once again, be creative, but u shouldn’t overload. (my fav pcs: x x x.)
about pages: in order to avoid chunky descriptions but still let people know the key deets about themselves, bloggers create about pages. sometimes these bout pages are uncoded but u can also use html code if u want to. some common things in an about page are interests, maybe personality types/horoscopes/hogwarts houses, original content, and links to other social media. (examples: x x x)
urls: urls are a key part of your blog’s brand. ‘rebranding’ is what people say if they change their url! if u are tired or bored with your url, changing it is an opportunity to change your theme and other parts of ur blog as well. (url change ex: x).
saved urls: saved urls are basically when bloggers hoard sideblogs in order to reserve the urls used for them. if you ever encounter a blank blog that has ‘saved’ as its title, that’s probably it. sometimes people like to give away their urls, either as a constant thing (ex: x) or by doing a url giveaway (x). either way, it’s a good opportunity to change it up!
tags: in order to keep their blog cleancut and organized, a lot of bloggers have special tags for certain people, certain topics, and/or certain types of media. many people in the phandom particularly have tags for dan and phil that match (strawberries and cream, lune and sole, etc). if they have many of these tags, there can be a page for their tags on their blog. this page can be coded with special html or just a regular tumblr page, it doesn’t really matter. but it’s very useful for those who visit your blog, and makes it easy for u to navigate older posts as well! (examples: x x x)
3. learn to make og content!
producing original content helps you establish what your strengths are and why people should follow you. it also allows u to contribute to the fanbase, and gives u a chance of being noticed by dnp! and the validation is lovely. there are many options if u want to make something.
gifs: gifs are an ART here in the phandom, and its mechanisms still perplex me to this day bc ive never tried it. u probably already know what a gif is, but if not, its essentially a short animation made in photoshop that repeats. gifmakers are often distinguished by a unique coloring (example gifmakers: x x x), such as my friend emily’s smooth dark blue tint (x). it can be a long process to learn how to gif but it is very rewarding in the end, from what i’ve heard. (tutorials: x x)
art: there is a very wide range of phanartists, all with such talents, either digital or traditional, that you can draw inspirations from for your own work. you can make cartoons, comics, realism, abstract, nsfw even, or any mix (or none) of the former. artists on tumblr definitely deserve more attention than they get here on tumblr, so be sure to show appreciation towards them! (my fav artists: x x x)
edits: edits are the Graphic Designs of our community and are usually very aesthetically pleasing. they can be centered around a certain event, like a video or something dnp made, or just for fun. the more practice you get making them, the more dexterous u’ll become. they can be a great tool if u like the design aspect of art but don’t want to actually draw. (edit makers: x x)
icons: icons are just the little profile picture that u can insert for ur blog. it’s really easy and fun to make them, kind of like a lazy version of edits. you can make them using photoshop or an app like picsart or medibang, and it doesn’t take a lot of time. more on how to use icons in section 4. (examples: x x x) (my lil tutorial: x)
moodboards: moodboards are nine pictures arranged 3 by 3 that have a certain color scheme. it’s kind of like a collage except the photo feature here separates the pictures for u. there are a lot of innovative moodboard makers that stun me w how pretty it looks or how they arrange the pics. moodboards are also an easy and fun option! (moodboard tags: x x x)
textposts: this is by far the easiest and more common form of content u will find. it’s just writing about dnp in a textpost! if a textpost isn’t very serious, people also call it a meme or shitpost. shitposting is defs on the rise here so its a good business to get into. it’s also a great outlet for ur emotions or personal connections to what dnp do! (example talk tags: x x x)
fics: by far the most famous media to come out of here, phanfiction is a popular form of phan indulgence. u have probably heard of the most scarring ones (list: x), but there is actually a really vast range of it, not just creepy smut! some other genres are fluff, angst, and slow burns. u will discover that, despite the sterotype, not all fanfiction is bad. you can find lovely fics on @phanfictioncatalogue by genre, au, or topic. and, if u need help writing something, many writers would love to help. (a few well-known fics: x x x x x)
4. tumblr etiquette!
i know tumblr might seem like a simple social media (or perhaps not after u’ve read all the above?) but there’s a lot of things that u just....u just don’t do. it’s sort of like virtual manners, and if u don’t follow them, then it’s unlikely that people will like ur blog. once again, this is by no means me forcing u to run ur blog a certain way. it just happens that the types of ppl who break these rules are who we mock in gcs :////////. so yea, here’s some advice.
credits: if u decide to use someone’s art, edit, gif, or icon on the theme of ur blog, check what they require of u before u use it. most content creators strongly ask for credit in the description of ur blog, either by link or like ‘icon/header/art by ____’. it is just a common courtesy to the person who spent time on that, and if u think credit will ruin the aesthetic of ur blog, a) u probably don’t have an aesthetic in the first place and b) learn to appreciate art, binch.
anonymity: anon asks can be very powerful either negatively or positively depending on how u yield them, so make sure that u are careful with what u send. compliments are always welcome and criticism as well, but blatant rudeness or hate will do nothing. u will only make someone feel bad about themselves and it will not accomplish anything. also, u face the threat of all their friends turning u into a meme.
sensitivity: a lot of people here are way too easily offended by harmless jokes, a common example in the phandom being when we insult dnp affectionately and people take it way too much to heart. please don’t start drama over something w no real meaning. however, there are times when it is indeed necessary. if u want to criticise a blogger, be respectful of them simultaneously. by all means, if u spot someone being racist, homophobic, transphobic, misogynist, or the like, feel free to call them out on it. but beforehand, make sure that u have done ur research and are educated on the topic, or u could turn out to be blatantly wrong.
adding to posts: everyone makes this mistake when they start out here and that’s totally okay, but adding to every post u reblog is incredibly bothersome. a rule of thumb would be don’t add anything unless what u say will actually improve the post significantly. if ur additions are along the lines of ‘LOL’ or ‘i relate!!!!’ or ‘philly is a smol bean XD’, learn to use the tags for heaven’s sake. they’re there for not only organization but also for commenting. some exceptions, though, would be if u are mentioned in the post or the op is your close friend.
respecting privacy: this should already be obvious to u, but respect dan and phil’s boundaries. do not tag them or their main tags (#daniel howell, #danisnotonfire, #amazingphil), in any phanfics, phanart (like specifically with them as a romantic ship), or phan edits. do not talk to their family members, expose their personal info like address or phone number, and do consider that they are real people just like u. we may make things based around phan, but it is kept in a community for us and not for dan and phil’s eyes. this is very important.
5. have fun!
sorry if this is all overwhelming, but i tried to make it as simplified as possible. and also sorry for the sass, i’m kinda tired of all the ding dongs on here and want to prevent further ding dongs from being created. thanks so much for readin and be sure to send me an ask anytime if u have questions! welcome to hell!
glossary
timmy darn communism: me being my usual weird self and replacing ‘tumblr dot com’ with random words that start with the same letters
mutuals: someone who you follow and who follows you; usually who u interact with most
rb: shortening for ‘reblog’
discourse: when theres is intense discussion of a certain topic, sometimes phan-related sometimes not, sometimes serious and sometimes silly
branding: the word ‘branding’ kinda started as a joke, but it’s generally what we use to call what someone’s blog reminds them of, whether it be a certain color or a discussion topic; my branding, if u asked a mutual, would probably be impressionism, tea, and baguettes (dont ask ab that one)
html: a simple type of coding used for designing websites! u can learn basic html here or here, it’s way easier and funner than it looks
dnp: dan and phil; we also say ‘deppy’, ‘dip and pip’, ‘the boys’, ‘the rats’, and more
coloring: basically the stylization of a gif, shown through filters, textures, contrast, brightness, etc.
talk tag: a tag in which all of the textposts that a person makes are sorted into
phanfiction terms
smut: porn fic :/
fluff: just what it sounds like, a type of fic that usually has a lot of soft stuff like cuddling, flirting, and looooove
angst: a fic with a lot of drama, usually sad or very emotional
slow burn: a fic where a pairing, in this case phan, slowly falls in love
au: stands for ‘alternate universe’, a fic in which dan and phil are written not as youtubers but in a completely different scenario (ie. bad boy and new guy in high school, university students, space exhibition, anything u can dream up really)
anon: short for ‘anonymous’
op: short for ‘original poster’, aka who made the post

This edition is a bit different from the last. Two more sections have been added: Loud Looks and Dream Support. That's right, the Dream Support section is officially here. Literally, right here:
Dream Support:

Fernie Mac is a 22 year-old photographer. He’s always been interested in photos, film, and art, but recently started taking his photography more seriously thanks to the inspiration from a friend. Fernie has made an effort to learn what it takes to take good photos and invested in a better camera. That investment sparked even more of his passion for photography, capturing moments such as these:

Taxi For Bob are from a town called Barnsley in South Yorkshire, England. The band started in 2013, covering songs by Green Day and Blink-182. They have an energetic, upbeat, pop-punk sound with very catchy melodies that you can’t help but sing along to.
Their members are Tom Jackson, Alex Bower, and Mattie Jones. Some of their musical influences include: Good Charlotte, Alkaline Trio, Ramones, and Stiff Little Fingers. Regarding future plans, Taxi For Bob would like to take it as far as it can go.
“We’re not doing it for the success, we all just love doing it. But it would be amazing if we could get any kind of career out of it.”
     ~ Alex Bower
After hearing their single “If You’re Not Dreaming, You’re Just Sleeping”, I was immediately pleased with the message of the song and reached out to Alex to find out more about the band. If you’re interested, I urge you to check out Taxi for Bob and follow them to stay updated on their project:

By: Mallery Lewis, Age: 20
This awesome illustration of Tyler Carter (vocalist of the band Issues) was made by Mallery Lewis. She’s a 20-year-old artist from Ohio and has been drawing all her life, continuing to progress with art as she got older. “My mom was a big inspiration because she’s a very creative person and I watched her paint a lot as a kid,” states Mallery. With that being said, I believe she’s a great example of a little inspiration going a long way.
Mallery is currently going to school to become a graphic designer. She hopes to work in that field as well as sell her traditional art on the side. With these goals as her focus, we can all be sure she will succeed! There’s way more art where this came from. Check out more of her work here!
Loud Looks:
This section will feature unique fashion, hair, clothing, diy, and more!
We all know fashion is another great way of expressing yourself. Why follow the trends when you could stand out? We aren’t ordinary. We are not duplicates. We are custom-made.

Tumblr media
In the last edition of Live Mind, I encouraged you all to dedicate a week to focusing on an idea of yours that deserved more attention and growth. How did you do? Personally, I decided to take this Live Mind blog more seriously. After discovering that people actually submitted content for it, I was extremely thrilled and I realized that this is more than just a mental project. This is really happening. These results have inspired me to say yes to more opportunities of growth and I must say, I've been happier and more confident.
Challenge #2: Do something that scares you a bit.
Stop saying no and talking yourself out of the opportunites that could potentially get you exactly where you want to be. You don’t know what you could be missing. So, why not find out? You’ll likely be surprised at you results!
If you believe your story will inspire others in some way, tell me all about it at [email protected]. It may be featured in an upcoming blog!
Get Inspired:
This poem creates scenery. Picture it as you read:
-Untitled-
You came into my life a subtle thoughtful breeze Joy and laughter quickly overtook me I became slave to your refreshing sound Each gust retrieved a part of me The warmth of your temperament cleansed the air bringing freedom as I inhale Into open hands I placed keys to doors long forgotten sacred places locked away Long betrayed by the others Places beyond the stairs beyond the walls and painted columns You'd trek through bitter winds Over broken pieces enduring hailstorms with nothing but trueness as a shield Endless volumes could not contain what's meant to be shared If hearts could speak do they give themselves away? Reveal the secret, or retain mystery. A lifetime of tomorrow's full of wonderment & surprise From shadowy mornings wrapped in haze...then Moon-glow spotlight to capture the effortless sway of the night It's rhythm is a pulse, the rhythm a passion The rhythm is a dance....with love its serenade.
     ~PoetryNPain
The writer of this poem chose to remain anonymous, which actually inspired the title of this blog. Retain a little mystery in your creativity. Not only will others keep wanting more, but you will too!
Thank You:
Thank you so much for reading this edition of Live Mind. I honestly feel extremely fortunate being able to put out a second blog. That’s only thanks to your support! I’m very grateful for that and your spreading the word. I hope to see you in the next one. Until then, keep it live. Dream louder.

RADWIMPS on How to Weather the Storm of Popularity!
Following their work on Makoto Shinkai’s Your Name, RADWIMPS found themselves on a rocket to popularity. As the film reached global acclaim, the group discovered that their newfound reputation led to a tour and numerous records, culminating in yet another partnership with the famed director on his new film, Weathering With You, and a global tour of their own that will include North America and Europe. We sat down with the band to talk about everything from how movie music is different than other types of music, what the band would do on their day off, who their musical influences are, and more!
Thank you for taking the time to speak with us! Could you please introduce yourselves for our readers?
Takeda: The name of our band, RADWIMPS, is a combination of two contrasting words: “Rad,” which means “cool” or “awesome,” and “wimp,” which refers to someone who is cowardly and timid. The vocalist Noda and guitarist Kuwahara started the band with three friends from their hometown during high school, and then I, Takeda, joined as the bassist, and Yamaguchi joined as the drummer, bringing the band to where it is today.
So, back again with Makoto Shinkai! How has it been to work with him again on a new project?
Noda: We were able to further hone our skills in writing movie soundtracks. I think we were successful in making music that fulfills its role behind the scenes. I also think we were able to utilize our experience from having done this once before. Thanks to our prior experience, our work and discussions went very smoothly.
More than anything, we’re overjoyed to have worked so closely with Mr. Shinkai over the past few years to create this film together. It feels like we were able to connect with him on a higher level than we did when working on Your Name, and that we came to love him even more. We still meet for drinks occasionally now that everything has wrapped up, and there’s a unique closeness there. I doubt that we’ll ever have such an incredible creative partner again.
What were your initial thoughts on the huge popular reaction to Your Name? Were you surprised by how successful it was?
Noda: During the first week after the movie was released Shinkai-san and I were exchanging emails, and he expressed that he was thrilled that our intentions had reached the audience. But, as we began entering the third and fourth weeks after release, we started to talk about how the movie might have become bigger than us. By the time it had become a worldwide hit, it almost felt like it wasn’t even happening. I think things turned out the way they did thanks to the movie’s quality and integrity, as well as several miracles that tied everything together along the way.
Are any of you anime or manga fans yourselves? What do you read or watch?
Takeda: Lately I’ve been watching That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime. I also like sci-fi anime like Gundam. Gundam UC is my favorite.
Since working on Your Name, you have been pretty busy, and that doesn't seem to be slowing down! How do you keep yourselves psyched up to perform?
Noda: Other than Your Name, I think that performing in Pieta in the Toilet was actually a big turning point for me. Up until now we hadn’t done anything outside of performing as a band, and working on movies has taught us how wonderful it is to create a single work of art together with other creators. After that, people have been reaching out to us about projects in a variety of genres. That includes creating the soundtrack for Your Name, appearing in television shows and dramas, and voice acting in Wes Anderson’s Isle of Dogs. Of course, we’re still producing original albums as well.
I don’t know how long we can keep this up, but my personal wish is to be able to leave this world having contributed everything I can with what I have. For me right now, I’m working under the belief that this is the main way I can connect to the world.
So even though it’s important to take a break sometimes, I’d always like to be creating something.
For Weathering With You, what were your thoughts on producing this album and the sound you wanted to create for it?
Noda: I received the Weathering With You script from Mr. Shinkai about a year after Your Name was released, in the August of 2017. After reading the script, the first song I composed was “Is There Still Anything That Love Can Do?” and “Daijobu.” These two songs became the beacon in working on this film for the next two years.
The other three songs came about by lengthy discussions with the director in addition to understanding the story better. Two of the songs were composed to match the scenes, so I prioritized expressing the psychology of the characters. I completed all five songs at the end of 2018. I then shifted to working on the OST of the film. I worked so hard every day, talking with the director and stayed in the studio, that I almost forgot that my main job is the band!
What differences do you see when producing an album for a movie, like Weathering With You or Your Name, and your own albums?
Noda: A film score has to embody a specific world, which makes it a slightly different experience from producing an original album because we have to challenge ourselves to come up with music that best matches that specific scene. Also, when making music for film, we can use any instruments we like, and it’s our job to choose the most appropriate ones to make the most suitable music. That completely removes the “band” framework and allows us to create music in a much more open field.
Standing out isn’t always the most crucial thing when it comes to movie music. In fact, the ideal might be for the music to melt together seamlessly with the scene’s characters, lines, and scenery and reach the audience as a single experience. When writing music as a band, the equivalent of a movie’s scenery and characters and lines are all part of the music itself, so the creative process naturally differs. It shows more of the creator’s ego.
Kuwahara: We can put sounds together as we please when creating an original album, but when writing a film score, we can’t just push our own preferences. There’s something novel and interesting about that. We have to match the music to the timing and the images, meaning it’s not just music you experience with your ears. That’s the biggest difference.
Picture this: You've got a day off to relax, no performances upcoming, no projects to finish. What do you do?
Noda: Honestly I’d probably write music, since music is basically a hobby for me. But if I had to choose something else, I’d like to go to a hot spring and spend all day sleeping.
Kuwahara: I like eating good food, so I think I’d spend the day trying different delicious dishes.
Takeda: I recently started participating in triathlons, so I’d like to do that.
Do you have any particular musical influences or artists that you turn to for inspiration?
Noda: If I had to give one it would be the Red Hot Chili Peppers. A while ago we had the opportunity to perform before the Red Hot Chili Peppers at a Japanese music festival called Summer Sonic, and seeing them on stage again reminded us of how important an influence they’ve been for our band.
Kuwahara: For bands, I like the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Oasis. I’m also a fan of the Japanese bands GLAY and L’Arc~en~ciel. I used to listen to and copy their music all the time. There are times when I realize how much they’ve influenced my own playing.
Takeda: The bassist Marcus Miller. I like the bass technique known as “slapping” the bass, and I learned a lot of that from watching his performances.
We can't wait to hear more about your upcoming tour around the world in the new year! Before we finish up, is there anything else you'd like to say to our readers?
Takeda: I would be happy if this film could entice emotions that provide energy in the audiences’ everyday lives. Please check the movie out. Thank you!
We really want to extend a huge thank you to RADWIMPS for answering our questions. Performing with the Red Hot Chili Peppers sounds like a pretty amazing time, and it seems like this band is really enjoying the opportunities anime is delivering to them! Weathering With You will be in theaters January 17th, with some special Fan Previews going on January 15th and 16th. You won't want to miss Shinkai's latest masterpiece, so get your tickets today!
Are you a RADWIMPS fan? What are your thoughts on their work on Weathering With You or Your Name? Let us know in the comments!

047: Ashley Lana Scott & Sarah Dennis: Become a co-conspirator for social justice
“We’re all different and that’s part of human nature, to celebrate those differences.” -Sarah Dennis
Calling in, rather than calling out…
In this episode, I had the privilege to discuss the history and the current reality of racism in our society as well as the potential for change from the inside out (and the outside in) with educator Sarah Dennis and artist & activist Ashley Lana Scott.
Sarah and Ashley had never met before so this was a truly candid conversation about what it takes to be an ally, how to support one another in looking inward at our internalized racism (regardless of skin color), and why these sometimes uncomfortable conversations are crucial to the cultural dialogue. (BTW, that’s the difference between calling in and calling out…  IN is initiating a conversation, OUT is pointing a finger in an accusatory way.)
Of course we talk about impostor syndrome and feeling like a total fraud when trying to have said difficult conversations, too!
This is a conversation that is humorous, sensitive, hopeful and deeply thought-provoking.
So take a deep breath, relax your mind open, have a listen, and let me know what you think over in the Facebook Group.
And if you haven’t already, check out Episode 045: Talking to strangers, where you’ll hear how I met Julie and why I’m taking on a theme on the show that pushes me out of my comfort zone. Also, Episode 046 with Andrea Ranae Johnson on how to use your power and privilege for good.

“At the end of the day, the thing that is pulling the strings is our silence, on every side, and that silence is deadly. Like Sarah was saying, when you allow yourself to feel that shame and then you don’t want to do anything about it, you allow it to overcome your action, it makes the decision for you… I suggest getting your hands dirty with that shame.” -Ashley Lana Scott

“I actually like the word ‘co-conspirator’ better, I think ‘ally’ is really soft and wimpy. For me it’s not a call to action, being an ally. But being a co-conspirator makes me feel like, “I want to dismantle this system and I’m going to do anything I can to figure out what that looks like.” -Sarah Dennis

About Sarah Dennis
Ph.D, Biography
I grew up in Chicago, attending a Chicago Public Magnet school that attracted children from diverse racial, ethnic, religious and socio-economic backgrounds near the Cabrini Green Housing Project in the mid-late 80s/early 90s. From the young age of about 10, I was inspired to become an engaging educator committed to social justice to help turn children on to the love of learning and reading, and try to change the inequities in many of the systems in the United States. Also from the age of 10, I was a proud member of the Chicago Children’s Choir, a multi-cultural, multi-racial, secular city-wide organization committed to social justice. My experiences at my elementary school and choir helped shape my commitment to social justice.
After attending New York University for a Bachelors degree in Early Childhood/Elementary Education and then teaching preschool/Kindergarten, 3rd, 4th and 5th grades at public schools in New York City, I began coaching and mentoring preschool teachers in the Best Practices in Early Literacy Project, which led to two Early Reading First projects (2002-’05 & 2005-’08). During these years, I earned a Masters in Literacy Education (2005) and a doctorate in Early Childhood (2008) from New York University.
I have presented at many dozens of conferences nationally including the National Head Start Research Conference in Washington D.C. (2002, ’04, ’06 & ’08), NAEYC’s Professional Development Institute (Pittsburg, 2007; Indianapolis, 2012), NIEER’s Conference (2002), the Early Reading First Grantees Meeting (2004 in AZ, 2005 in FL, 2007 in CA), the Illinois Reading Council Conference (Springfield, 2011-2014), and have provided professional development and coaching to many hundreds of teachers and coaches. I have also been assessing and tutoring children (Kindergarten-HS) for nearly 15 years in NYC and Chicago.
I am the founder and co-leader of the Illinois Chapter of the National Association for Multicultural Education: Advancing and Advocating for Social Justice & Equity, and have also founded and co-lead the Families for Racial Justice Chicago Facebook Group. I recently participated as part of a panel on anti-racism for the Quentin B. Young Equity Project (Feb 2017) (see photo below), and I am currently in training to hopefully become a trainer with the People’s Institute for Survival and Beyond.
I hope to hear from you soon to see how I can support your work to inspire the children of the next generation!
