a carved mother-of-pearl quran box and matching quran depicting al-aqsa mosque from bethlehem, palestine, dating to the 1960s.
mother-of-pearl carving is a traditional craft in bethlehem, especially among women, historically using mother-of-pearl via oysters from the red sea. the craft is said to have been brought over by franciscan monks from damascus in the 15th century. the tradition is still going strong today.

mother-of-pearl carving is a traditional craft in bethlehem, especially among women, historically using mother-of-pearl via oysters from the red sea. the craft is said to have been brought over by franciscan monks from damascus in the 15th century. bethelehemi carved shells depicting themes from the new testament were popular souvenirs for christian pilgrims to the city. the tradition is still going strong today.
