Short Story Contest (Fall 2018)

Yes, despite the insane schedule, I still entered for the Fall contest at the end of last month because I wanted to kick my but back to writing. Struggled a lot between lack of time, energy and a theme I don’t necessarily master. I got through and submitted it.

(Roleplaying) Tips & Tricks: SCREENFLY.

( ooc - Tips & Tricks ) Goood morning. I have to eat and get ready for work, BUT I wanted to introduce you guys to SCREENFLY. This little tool allows you to see what your theme looks like on other people’s screen resolution. 

I’v been using it for a few years, I thought it was common knowledge, but with the latest blogs I’ve stumble upon, clearly it is not, as result I found myself searching for 10 minutes for the links allowing me access to pop up windows, or copy paste information because the background was in the way of my reading. I know/understand that some of you are not professional in coding, but when you pick elaborate themes I recommend you double/triple check that at least people with a minimum of 13 inch screen are able to access ALL your links and the navigation and if you can do the effort for the 10 inch screens format it’s even better (per experience it’s always tricky with contained theme to make it work for under 13 inch). Otherwise it is an hassle to navigate on a blog, which is too bad when you clearly have an interesting character behind all that theme and even good writing skills. Your theme may look great on you screen but CHECK if it looks great on other people’s screen (another tip if you have pop up pages on your blog: make sure to have a link version to provide to people who need it).

A little demonstration of SCREENFLY on my current theme.

What am I look for when using SCREENFLY? (personal check list) (1) people can find/access the important links just by looking at the page. (2) people can find/access the navigation to go through my blog. (3) nothing bleeds out/is hidden/disappeared. (4) people can read my posts without having to zoom like a crazy person (size font). (5) people can enjoy the theme.

For 10′inch screens - not bad, they see all the links and navigation, despite the bleeding out of the description, but since it doesn’t hide anything useful that bleed out will get a pass (unfortunately screenfly as trouble to mirror music players but I would assume it’ll go a little over the description seeing how close it is from the bottom). (full resolution).

For 15′ inch screens - my laptop’s resolution, smooth looking great and I’m sure the player is not over anything. I just have to check through the screenfly monitor that all is fine. DO NOT ZOOM OUT to have a better assemble view, it’ll ruin your theme coding. (full resolution).

For 24′ inch screens - Depending on your size of your sidebar and the position you may have surprises. For example on this resolution (which is the max), we don’t even see Greaves’ face, but they still can navigate my blog smoothly. Since it’s the maximum, I decide to not worry for this theme this time, because it’s rare to have followers with 24 inch screens. Again DO NOT ZOOM OUT but carefully go through the screenfly monitor to see where are the link, where the background image stretch or ends so you can fix colours. For this theme, the background is a repeated pattern so I have no issues what so ever. (full resolution 1|2).

Voilà ! I hope this is helpful for you guys. :) Again if you want to disregard people’s comfort for aesthetic you totally can, it’s your choice. Yet, it’s always nicer to land on a roleplaying blog where people can at least find the about page and read your posts.

Japanese honorifics

-San: is the most common honorific and is equivalent to Mr., Miss, Ms. or Mrs. It is the all-purpose honorific and can be used in any situation were politeness is required

-Sama: is one level higher than "-san" and is used to confer great respect

-Dono: this one comes from the word "tono" which means "lord". It is an even higher level than "-sama" and confers utmost respect

-Kun: suffix used at the end of boys' names to express familiarity or endearment. It is also sometimes used by men among friends, or when addressing someone younger or of a lower station

-Chan: is used to express endearment, mostly towards girls. It is also used for little boys, pets, and even among lovers. It gives a sense of childish cuteness

Bozu: informal way to refer to a boy similar to the English terms of "kid" or "squirt"

Senpai: title which suggests that the addressee is one's senior in a group or organization. It is most often used in a school setting, where underclassmen refers to their upperclassmen as "senpai". It can also be used in the workplace, such as when a newer employee addresses an employee who has seniority in the company

Kohai: is the opposite of "senpai" and is used towards underclassmen in school or newcomers in the workplace. It connotes that the addressee is of a lower station

Sensei: literally meaning "one who has come before", this title is used for teachers, doctors, or masters of any profession or art

-[Blank]: is usually forgotten in these lists, but it is perhaps the most significant difference between Japanese and English. The lack of honorific means that the speaker has permission to address the person in a very intimate way. Usually only family, spouses, or very close friends have this kind of permission. Known as yobisute, it can be gratifying when someone who has earned the intimacy starts to call one by one's name without the honorific. But when that intimacy hasn't been earned, it can be very insulting.
