Olzha and freda are like my favorites tell me more about their dynamic. i need to go through your toyhouse and read more of the profiles for trainstory... Hi
OK YES THEY ARE ALSO MY FAVORITES
i dont think ive written it down anywhere but the way they meet is like. roughly a month after freya arrives to the train and has befriended isel she keeps hearing the name of this one guy show up and is like alright im gonna figure out who olzhas is. she spends like an entire day just scaling the entire perimeter of the train until she locates em in the midst of renovating eir restaurant and just like stands outside waiting saying nothing. and olzhas seemingly doesnt notice so she just keeps coming by and standing outside for like a week till e's like hey you can come in you know.
and from then on the two start to talk and freya's like. trying to figure out what this guy's deal is because e keeps being mentioned in the context of isel but isel himself just does not want ANYTHING to do with em and olzhas detects this thought with eir clairvoyance and just like. resignedly explains the entire matter of the two's divorce and then is like wow that felt great to talk about. freya's kind of just amused by everything and is like alright. kind of want to put this man under a microscope
freya just starts to visit eir place more and more frequently to the point where it becomes a daily thing.... theyve taken up the habit of having dinner together notably and just generally discussing whatever the fuck. like the major thing between them is just idle chat and forming inside jokes and its all just very leisurely and relaxed between the two of them
eventually after a few conversations about olzhas' telepathic powers (which freya finds very very cool.) e's like hey do you want to try out connecting our thoughts its basically like a secret way to talk. freya (fan of talking and fan of secrets) is immediately willing to try it out and thats basically the basis for the two always being psychically connected. uhh they just get like a full repertoire of one anothers thoughts and emotions and evidently it lead to their understanding of one another getting rounded out VERY quickly, theyre both very familiar with one anothers state of mind and can be super sensitive to any discomfort which has both lead to some interesting stories the two've talked out and also them quickly figuring out precise ways to help one another calm down and whatnot
and honestly its very important for freya shes very shy very anxious about talking to new people in general even if she conducts herself in a kinda grandiose whimsical manner. and shes gotten better about it since then but like her befriending olzhas was a fucking anomaly and it was a very lucky one. over time shes become more outspoken and confident just because those traits of eirs rubbed off on her and conversely olzhas started to gain both a better sense of responsbility and a better sense of joviality because of her.
more broadly speaking i just like their dynamic because its like.... sooooo fucking funny to me conceptually freya's strongest friendships being ones with two divorced men who hate each other so bad but theyd both drop dead for her because shes so endearing. and with these two in particular they're just complete gadflies but olzhas is very blunt and morose and freya has this cheery friendly air about her. but also olzhas is arguably the more levelheaded the one more willing to help others the one who acts objectively, freya contrarily can be extremely self-oriented and willing to disregard consequence or others feelings for the sake of her own wants and needs.... HOWEVER they care about one anothers wellbeing so bad and they know one another inside out and kind of just know how to approach one anothers shortcomings. they balance one another out and its like easy for them to confront one another.... theres this weird mutual elegance and understanding that actually makes it so that they each find it fun to 'argue' because they know it comes from a good place and no matter what theyll hear one another out. at the same time theyre so in tune with one another that it can become insular and they can appear very strange or mean to any onlookers. idk their discrepancies and double standards in the context of how they act as a duo is so charming to me its my favorite thing to write about

7, 12, 17, 23,
you didn't give me any fandom either so it's vibes only babeyy!!
7. what character did you begin to hate not because of canon but because how how the fandom acts about them?
This is actually pretty difficult to answer because I am always a hater about canon and usually I find if I turned into a character hater after being exposed to fandom it's because seeing the way fandom talked about them disconnected so heavily from my experience with them i went back and found all the reasons I actually hate this character and find everyone else's hot takes fucking insufferable and i need the fandom to shut the fuck up about them forever.
That said, while I think hate is far too strong a word in this case, I am pretty salty about the veneration of Rena as like the ultimate higurashi character better than all the rest. Higu fandom's blatant favoritism for her will always get on my nerves, because Rena is a wonderful character and a delight, but you guys are so fucking annoying about it. Really I don't hate her though I just hate higurashi fandom kjnhbgfcxdfcgvhbj
12. the unpopular character that you actually like and why more people should like them
I think you guys should read my post about Tearer AINI! My favorite cringefail murder guy! He's fucking pathetic and tragic! He has severe mommy issues! You should read my post! All he does is kill people, post vaporwave, and dress like a clown! And I love him! You guys don't understand, I love Somezuki Uru so much--/gets shot.
Uh but besides him, but still AITSF is definitely Okiura Renju, a guy everyone hates and I wrote a post about that, but he's definitely my guy. King of haunting the narrative. I love gay people who suck. I love men who are plagued by their mistakes struggling to live in a world they cannot confess their all their secrets to relieve their pain. I love men who are trying, and not always doing their best at it, but definitely trying to care for and connect with others and find some shred of happiness, and it haunts me that he was killed before he could ever fully get there.
17. there should be more of this type of fic/art
I really wish AA fandom had more art for investigations 2, because I2 fucking rules so hard man. I2 is the best one! I will die on this hill! I NEED MORE ART AND FIC OF JUSTINEEEE!!! WHERE IS MY FUCKING WIFE!!!! AND MY SON BOY, SEBASTIAN!!!!! Y'all really have no excuses I get that I2 doesn't have the homoerotic shit you guys come to AA for, but the thing is. It has all the family shit that makes ace attorney wonderful and magical and beautiful. Also Lang is there. Where is my Lang content. Where is my Mr. Shields content. Where is my evil clown--I mean Simon Keyes content. All the good shit you could ever want is in Investigations 2 go fucking play investigations 2 right now and PLEASE USE THEM FOR STUFF. MAKE STUFF FOR THEM. THEY ARE SO GOOD. THEY ARE SO UNDER-LOVED IN THIS FANDOM. IM DYING SCOOB.
23. ship you've unwillingly come around to
No idea. I feel like broadly speaking if I hate a ship I stay a ship hater and I never like it. Or if I come around to something my opinions just weren't that strong in the first place. That said I have deeply deeply begrudgingly accepted like oumota into my soul. But like in extremely specific contexts and circumstances. Me from 5 years ago would literally shoot me dead if they read that.

PLEASE do talk about Vegas using English with Pete I am fascinated by your commentary and linguistics in general and would love to hear what you have to say on that
Tumblr media
SFSFGJDSGFK I WANT TO PUT ON RECORD THAT Y’ALL ARE ENABLERS (but im really touched that you guys want to read my messy thoughts about this, so thank you!!!)
first things first, let’s start with some fancy terms that can be useful to understand bilingualism a little more. there actually are, broadly speaking, two types of bilingualism:
simultaneous (or compound) bilingualism takes place when two language systems are learned at the same time with a single context. this happens when children before the age of three are regularly addressed in two spoken languages. in this case both languages are acquired as first languages, so there’s no dividing line between the two: they are often used concurrently, or even interchangeably, and can easily be switched at will even when speaking. in linguistics, when a speaker alternates between two or more languages in the context of a single conversation or situation, this is called code-switching
sequential bilingualism occurs when a person becomes bilingual by first learning one language and then another. in this case the first language you learn is your native language, while the second one is a foreign language that you learn in a separate context and remain separate in your mind
keep in mind that things aren't actually as simple and clear-cut as this: even in simultaneous bilingualism there can be a dominant language, one that the speaker feels more comfortable expressing himself in, and even in sequential bilingualism there's code-switching and situations in which a second language can become stronger than the native one, but for the sake of simplicity let's not get too much into it
even taking this into consideration, to me vegas definitely falls into simultaneous bilingualism, but either way there are many reasons why a bilingual person would, intentionally or subconsciously, switch codes in a single conversation. the ones that happen more often with vegas are:
identity: the language we speak is inseparable from our identity. sometimes code-switchers will start using another language to present themselves in a certain way and make a different impression [Ep.04: 'don't worry. im not gonna hurt you' to porsche. Ep.05: 'i don't see why not' to porsche]. there's also the concept of group identity, in which code-switching can also be used to better fit in or to exclude someone else [i personally think all the times vegas code-switches with macau and the hedgehog fit this category: he uses english to show affinity to them and exclude everyone else. which is why hearing vegas talking to macau in thai in the hospital scene makes me insanely happy: no need to code-switch anymore, because pete is now part of their family too]
solidarity and gratitude: in this case code-switching can occur inadvertently or with the intention of fostering a relationship [Ep. 04: 'thank you' to porsche. Ep. 07: 'we're on the same team now, you and i' to porsche]
to soften or strengthen command: while asking someone to do something, code-switching can work to both mark emphasis [Ep.02: 'tell me something i don't know' to the hit woman he hired. Ep.14: 'shut the hell up. know your place' to chan] or make it sound more like a request [Ep.07: 'let me try' to the bodyguards during the torture scene, and then later in the episode 'just think about it' and 'arms up' to porsche].
lexical need: especially with technical or idiomatic speech, code-switching occurs when translating such words or phrases could distort the precise meaning [Ep.04: 'saved by the bell' to kinn]
emotions: code-switching is not always a conscious choice. when we experience strong and sudden feelings, people may subconsciously switch into the language in which they feel that they can express themselves better, or that on the contrary carries less emotional weight for us. this is why people sometimes are more comfortable swearing in a language rather than another [vegas does this all the time. when he is angry and has to swear, he always switches to english]
and then you have vegas code-switching with pete. it actually starts because of pretty standard reasons: in episode 7, when vegas asks him 'looking for something?' and then tells him 'come on', it's all about commanding and imposing his authority; both episode 11 ('what a load of bullshit', 'who's a good boy') and the beginning of episode 13 ('do you know how sexy you are') are equal parts lexical needs (idk about you guys, but i could never say 'good boy' and 'sexy' in my dominant language) and emotions (negative in ep. 11, positive in ep. 13)
but then a new reason is added to the ones listed above, a mix of emotions and soften command that's uniquely for pete, which is to plead. everything we hear vegas say in english to pete after pete escapes, we hear him say it multiple times in thai first: 'guu khaaw thot' vegas says multiple times before switching to 'im sorry'. 'ying si' vegas says before yelling 'shoot me'. 'tham mai mueng mai wing' (why didn't you run) and 'mueng tam guu ma tham mai' (why did you follow me) vegas says before finally asking him 'why? why are you still here?'. pete seems to not be responding to him when he says any of those things in thai, so vegas does the only thing he can: he code-switches in the desperate hope that pete may hear his sincerity. every time vegas switches to english with pete in any of these moments it's like he's telling 'please': please believe me, im sorry; please do it, shoot me; please answer me, why aren't you leaving.

please make your critical post of supernatural those are literally the only posts about supernatural i care about, especially since i side eye the heck out of the many people who give supernatural a pass because they ship two boring white dudes (dean and castiel) PLEASE
omg ok nobody make fun of me for posting an earnest criticism of this show i enjoy critical analysis and being a hater
i think most of why this show sucks has already been covered pretty thoroughly but these r the main things abt it that piss ME off.
the racism runs so SO deep. supernatural is supposed to be an exploration of americana thru horror (and i’ll give them that. like the idea of deconstructing america and all its fallacies thru horror is genius and in competent hands it would be absolutely incredible. but anyway) but it only really scrapes the surface of what is inherently horrific about americana! something like that is supposed to be an INTERROGATION of monstrosity and how america (and western society more broadly) creates monsters out of human beings and how white christian morals are established as the ONLY acceptable morals and how anyone who falls outside of those norms (non christian, non white, lgbt, people with substance use disorders, prisoners, the poor, indigenous people/cultures etc) are monsterized, so to speak, because of an oppressive and unloving colonial society. like u cannot have a horror narrative abt monsters attacking family values and white suburban life without invoking some very old and racist conventions! but instead of subverting that supernatural just reinforces it! it consistently fails to make any kind of real statement because the most demonized parts of society are the people who are also treated the WORST in canon! native american beliefs are stolen and turned into stupid bogeymen without the show ever featuring a native character or seriously grappling with the inherent violence of america as a colonial state, black men are consistently portrayed as angry and evil while black women are treated like shit (dean’s happy ending at the end of s5 is with a white woman he fucked one time instead of with the black woman who he was in love with??), impoverished people are mostly ignored and when they’re not theyre monsters (theres one episode centered around a poor rural family that commits murder and cannibalism. no supernatural stuff or monsters. just poor people. thats the scare).
theres this consistent fixation on preserving american suburbia, on saving “normal” (read: white middle class) people and it sets up this dynamic of like. the “real world” is the white middle class and then there’s hunters including our mains who defend that “real world” against monsters and demons, which is just Everything Else. and the writers PRETEND to struggle w the question of monsters and what makes one but they just toss it around without ever actually committing to answering that question with compassion or narrative coherency. they have multiple episodes about characters who were raised human, who want to be human, but have to be killed because of an inherent evil nature. there’s a plot in the early seasons about how one of the main characters has demonic powers, and instead of saying that doesnt make him inherently bad and he’s allowed to fully access all parts of himself without being fundamentally evil, they consistently frame intrinsically neutral traits as inherently evil specifically because they go against a christian ideal of morality! and eventually he learns to suppress these powers and that’s that!
and then it establishes christianity as the guiding principle of america, not in a way of like “american culture and history is deeply steeped in white supremacist protestantism that has led to incredibly fucked up views on god and love and morality and thats what we have to deal with as people who live here”, but in a way of like “the christian god is real and he’s a white guy who fucking hates you.” which like. Ok. they bastardize and trivialize any religions that arent christian while building the entire series on christianity. Ok. like i guess its possible to write stories about white christianity without implying that every other religion is full of shit but supernatural did not do that on any level
its also just. really poorly written. i genuinely loved the first season i thought it was really well paced and that the characters were introduced really well like the first season is a GOOD horror story in terms of family as horror and the inherent terror of americana. but the pacing and the character development started tripping up in s2. by s3 they started raising the stakes Exponentially which honestly is such a kiss of death for good fiction like every season mounting a bigger badder antagonist than the last one is the surest way to kill a story bc it means the earlier entries in that story become basically meaningless in the face of the new bad guy. u dont need to raise the stakes to write a good story! a well written story abt the horror and drama of a close knit and unhealthy family caught up in something they don’t really understand isn’t Less emotionally resonant than, like, having to stop the world from ending, because at the end of the day its Fiction and none of it matters beyond what u can make the audience really Feel. im not gonna feel sorrow if 7 billion fake little people die. i didnt cry when the death star blew up whatever planet it blew up. what DOES make me feel sorrow is a few truly well written characters whose relationships are complicated and tragic and whose motivations i can understand and whose inner lives i can imagine. raising the stakes destroys a good story and thats exactly what happened to supernatural (not that the racism and misogyny and american protestant moralizing wasn’t killing it already)
also, the misogyny makes the female characters basically impossible to watch. like not a single person on that show is a good actor (except sterling k brown love u king u were the best actor that show ever saw) but they didnt even give any of the women anything to work with. its literally so cringey to watch any woman onscreen except maybe like. bela talbot and she was treated like utter shit.
god. you know that expression dont fall in love with potential? i dont do that w people i do it w fiction. i came off black sails and the untamed and frankenstein and i watched the first couple seasons of supernatural with my friend and it was like...there was so much room for it to SAY something about monsters and how society creates them thru violence and how deeply horrific american protestantism is. like theres so many questions and concepts that it brought up that it never actually SAID something about. shithole of wasted potential. and yeah dean and castiel is stupid there i said it

Could you please elaborate on the Sweet Tooth thing, if that's alright?
There's a LOT to unpack and I'm not Jewish so I want to be a bit careful on it but like. Stuffed to the brim with dogwhistles at the very least. My googling abilities for finding better discussions on these specific tropes is unfortunately not up to snuff so its not going to be as heavily sourced/linked as I'd like. This is long so I'm going to put under a cut. Also please if you have good sources dissecting the tropes/caricature things I am referring to, feel free to add them.
to give a tl;dr: Disease decimates earth with symptoms that echo antisemitic caricatures, weird anti-quarentine/anti-masker vibes throughout, and eventually the plot just goes fully into blood libel.
So "Sweet Tooth" broadly is about The Sick, a virus that has decimated earth's population. After The Sick started, all children born were ""hybrids"" with animal features.
So to start off on the deeply antisemitic shit, the symptoms of "The Sick". There are two tell-tale signs of it in the show, and well. They're both antisemitic tropes! Your nose starts turning red (I think it might even get swollen) and your hands start shaking. While these are both like. Sure things that could actually be disease symptoms, but like thats how you do dogwhistles is having "plausible deniability" (though I feel like thats generous to this). Among the most common things focused on in antisemitic caricatures is noses. While usually this is like having large or hooked noses, the red nose is a bit more subtle and broad of a way to do the same idea.
The shaking hand is a sign of greediness. This is a common visual language for greed, to show hands shaking in anticipation in a deal. Unfortunately, this is very often put hand in hand with antisemitic caricatures and thus kinda blends into being one itself.
I don't want to do episode synposes so im gonna try to do this a bit more truncated.
> Dad lies to titular Sweet Tooth, one of the first "hybrids", about the nature of the end of the world, saying it was a "fire" that nature did to get rid of greedy people who were hurting it, and people blamed the "hybrids" because of the timing of the births. This sequence is very classic ecofascist "Humanity is the virus uwu" shit.
> Dad dying of the virus gives a strong visual for how the virus symptoms are just antisemitic caricatures.
> This might be me reading too much into it, but, there is a few sequences early on that show the kid *hearing noises outside the normal range of human hearing* which in retrospect really feels like a "listen for dogwhistles" scene.
> After dad dies the kid is being hunted on their little safe spot. Kid is saved from two poachers by a black man who had initially planned on killing the kid/turning them in for a bounty, but hears that the kid can talk and realizes "Oh hey, they are human?"
> The above scene establishes that hybrids, which mind you are all children, are hunted, killed, and extremely valuable. This hunting is so thorough that the fact that they can speak is alarming to everyone.
> After this theres some shit that has very big anti-masker vibes, like how there was a very sudden quarantine announced when The Sick first starts and how this one woman ended up living in her own prison because of the evil quarantine and regulations. Theres a present-day bit where the kid and the guy who saved him run into other people, who all wear their masks for their guests, who they havent had in like a decade. The man says "You've been sheltered in place, we don't have it, we don't have to wear the damn masks" or something to this effect.
>There is what appears to be an armed faction that helps run clinics for dealing with the sick that is starkly shown to be all wearing masks when people in the clinic aren't, and very clearly shown by the camera as a power showing excessive force.
>The show has a bit where it follows a man whose been involved in treating it, and has him inherit the legacy of searching for a permanent cure. There has been a way to fight/treat the symptoms and stave the disease off for a while now, though its manufacturing is mysterious.
>Turns out this is why the kids are hunted and killed. To make medicine so that some select people can safely live. This is the point at which I just said "Oh so its fucking flat out blood libel okay" and walked away.
This is speculation, but, given whats been established, I wouldn't be surprised if the plot ends up going in a Plandemic route.
Again, I am certainly not an expert in this shit and am not Jewish, but based on what I've read about dogwhistles and specifically the history of Blood Libel, its pretty clear to me that this show is an antisemitic mess.
Theres other shit in there that sucks and is bad but I dont want to spend any more time on this than I already have.

I have a question and I hope it’s not offensive as I am just genuinely curious, but why does trans magnus always wear panties? I ask because all the trans men I know (my brother, for example and i’m super close to him so most of what I’ve learned of the trans experience has been from him but i’m aware there are different experiences) wear boxer briefs, with my brother in particular I know that was the first change he made when transitioning and was super important to him because wearing underwear targeted at women was a big trigger for his dysphoria. In these fics are we operating under the belief that magnus would be a trans person who doesn’t experience dysphoria? Or do some trans men who do experience dysphoria just not care about underwear because at the end of the day it’s just a piece of material? Again I hope this isn’t rude, i’m just trying to learn different perspectives.
I'm gonna be real bro I just based it off my own experiences which means like. huh flexible dysphoria. some days i want absolutely no tiddies, some days I'm all good. some days i like pretty lacy things some days I'd rather die. sometimes it's a mix. I don't have much bottom dysphoria in general (partially why words like pussy and clit don't bother me, although it's also partially just I don't like the alternative words like "slit"), although it can strike sometimes especially when menstruating, and like, I'd be fine with most of the things I write. (The things I wouldn't do myself aren't gender related, so much as "love reading that kink--wouldnt do it tho" probably bc I don't trust like that lmao)
but in this particular instance i write about it a lot specifically as a sex thing, and part of the reason it IS sexy is bc its like, ah, man in panties ;) it's got that light like humiliation (???)/forbiddenness in addition to just being aesthetically pleasing, and it's kind of almost a rebellion like yes, even a trans man in panties, it's still a Man in panties. like wearing nail polish bc that's not just for girls u kno but it's still genderfucky? and if a guy wears it it has a certain Vibe and it doesn't change if the guys trans, it doesn't mean he's "Reverting Back To Girl" or some shit, and it's the same with dresses and makeup and the panties
personally I don't think he'd necessarily wear them every day under his clothes, but I can see why you'd think that from my blog since I mention it a lot. same with dresses, but that's just bc this is a porn blog, so I'm writing about him having fun sex (and therefore often he may or may not be prepared with pretty panties when normally he may have worn boxer briefs or whatever) and im not really focused so much on talking about dysphoria and serious shit that is kinda depressing, cos this is my fun porn blog, yknow? I talk more about things that make him (or me!) feel good
for the record tho a) gender euphoria. also i feel like while I can't do this cos I'm not like, medically transitioned so I still unfortunately look pretty smol and feminine, but since magnus has got like a full sexy man body, that'd make shit like panties work all the better, bc personally if I looked like that, being able to wear ultra feminine shit and still look like a man, like a man in panties, would be incredibly validating
b) I'd also be totally open to magnus without dysphoria tho! I kno its another target on my back with the "You're actually a girl"/"you're not a real trans" crowd, but like, you don't need dysphoria to be trans, and truscum can suck my dick. and don't leave an unfunny "what dick?" joke in my inbox it's not original
anyway more broadly speaking, personally I wouldn't care too much about more feminine undies unless it was a Bad Day, but I prefer like more "masculine" underwear just because it's more comfortable. panties r great but I don't like wearing them on a daily basis or for long periods of time bc they tend to annoy me. like, itchy lace, or it's a constant ever so slight wedgie--idk maybe I just haven't found the right size yet but I'm fine with my pokemon boxers or whatever so I haven't bothered. I'll still wear them sometimes but only if I'm really in the mood to "feel pretty"
but it could be really important to other people with worse dysphoria, and that is totally valid and makes sense. it's not that it's "just a piece of material" it's just for me personally it doesn't always bother me, and in the case of Magnus, I big time project (plus, I mean. magnus sexy in panties and this is a blog all about magnus being sexy. just sayin)
hope that helps?? I just woke up and typed this on mobile so I hope it's coherent

Comparing RWBY and YGO DM: The Handling and Evolution of Themes
Hey! Its been a hot minute since I last posted anything RWBY-related but Im laying in my bed right now and Im sick and bored so I guess we're doing this. Today I will do my best to analyze what I percieve to be the main themes and messages of both of these shows, or more specifically, how theyre handled narratively. Im mostly focusing on that part because, while these series do have similar themes and messaging, they are still a few things in which they are wildly different. And with that, lets start with this essay-post-thing!
1. Theres something we need to adress first
Okay so, before we can really talk about this, theres something I feel the need to clarify here: Neither of these stories was "planned from the beginning".
Now, I dont think a story being planned from the beginning or not nesscessarily makes the story any better or worse by default, however, it is still important to acknowledge because the way the story is planned is going to affect every facet of it. Things are not going to be foreshadowed properly, things are gonna be set up only for nothing to come of it, the story might drastically change directions, characters might act differently, etc, etc.
And, this is bit off-topic but, it's much better to just admit that the story was not planned than trying to pretend that it was. Like, there are a lot of reasons why I tend to be so forgiving towards YGO even though its not very good, but one of them is definitely the fact that, as far as Im aware atleast, the guy who wrote it isnt pretending to have had this big master plan all along and neither is the fandom. With RWBY on the other hand... yeaaaah, its kinda the opposite. From what Ive seen of RWBYs fandom, there seems to be this pretty popular narrative that everything was planned even though it clearly wasnt. Thats pretty bad and honestly lowers my opinion of the writers so much more than if they would just admit to not having a proper plan.
Like, I initially consumed YGO like this: Yu-Gi-Oh Duel Monsters, Yu-Gi-Oh (aka Season 0), like, a quarter of the Yu-Gi-Oh manga (I still havent finished it)
In all three of these we have the character of Yami Yuugi, or just Yami. Broadly speaking, he is an ancient egyptian gamer spirit who lives in a magical puzzle that has not been solved for 3000 years until this highschooler named Yuugi Mutou comes along and solves it, thus setting him free and allowing him to possess Yuugi and have access to the vague magical powers of the puzzle.
In Duel Monsters he's perfectly fine most of time, morally speaking. There is an instance of him almost murdering a guy and its a bit unclear what exactly happens to those he mindcrushes but overall he's very much a pretty good guy. In Season 0 most of what he does is set up these games for bad people, where they will go insane no matter what they do. From how I understand this whole Shadow Game, Penalty Game stuff, if you lose a Shadow Game, you get violent and intense hallucinations and you will always cuz yknow, gamer spirit. But if you try to cheat, which most of the bad people do in this show, you get violent and intense hallucinations as a punishment.
Since the two anime are generally considered two different continuities, its perfectly fine that Yamis characterization is wildly different in both of them. But in the manga both of these characterizations appear, basically one after the other with no real arc or consequences, for that matter. Why is that? Simply put, someone thought it was a good idea to try to turn an episodic, very slice of life-y light-horror manga into a more traditional, more plot-driven battle shounen. From what Ive heard, it was apparently largely because of network interference or something, but the point is, it changed directions incredibly drastically with little planning and everyone knows this and I can understand that for the most part.
In RWBY we have the character of Blake Belladonna, who, in the first 3 volumes/seasons atleast, was this aloof, more toned down loner-type character with a pretty strong sense of justice. She's an in-universe marginilized racial minority and she clearly cares about racial injustice. The way its initially framed makes it seem like she had a very hard life and no stable support system, which is what eventually pushed her to join a Civil Rights group/Terrorist organization (good god, the Faunus subplot is so awful, I could write a whole essay about it but Im already de-railing rn so I'll just save that for later).
Then, in volumes 4-5 it turns out her father is actually like, the mayor or chief of this island-place called Menagerie and she grew up in this big mansion with multiple guards/servants. Oh and also, apparently "space is a commodity" on there, so theres that. She still retains large parts of her personality but she's kinda like, worse somehow I think. I cant really describe it in a meaningful way but I hope you get what Im saying anyway. Then in Volume 6 she confronted her emotional abuser Adam (sorry for not mentioning him sooner but yeah, he was like, her abusive boyfriend, which is something that a lot of people disagree with but I wont really say anything about it either way because I dont really feel any specific way) with her friend, Yang, and ended up killing him.
After all that, she pretty much lost the rest of her personality, as well as her arc about all the Faunus stuff. She just kinda became the meek, generically nice, recovering abuse victim. Why? Well, the actual reason is that they didnt plan out shit and are just kinda flying by the seat of their oversized clown-pants and if they and the fandom just admitted it, I would have less of an issue. I still wouldnt be as forgiving towards RWBY as I am towards YGO because the crux of the issue, for me, is just that I dont particulary like RWBY but also like. Do you really expect me to take MKEK seriously as writers after admitting to not have a timeline because iT wOuLd CaUsE pLoThOlEs?
However, since they want us to believe that everything was planned out from the beginning, the explaination would be.... Idk, they deliberately butchered one of their main characters?? Because.. they hate her?? Maybe????
So yeah, that was quite a detour however, I would like you to keep this mind going forward.
2. Themes of the Early Series'
First, what do mean by 'Early Series' for both of these shows respectively? Well, for YGO that would have to be Season 0 or if youre reading the manga, everything pre-Duelist Kingdom. Basically, the part of the series thats a episodic, very slice of life-y light-horror series.
For RWBY that would be the first three Volumes, also known as the Poser-Era. Back then it was just kinda an action series that took place at Anime Warrior Academy (also known as Beacon) with some pretty bare minimum worldbuilding, character-driven plots and developments but now its more of an epic high-fantasy story with more of an emphasis on plot as opposed to just action.
The themes and messages in Early YGO are kinda vague, very confusing to me and if you were to follow any of it literally that would be pretty bad. For now Im just gonna say the main themes are Friendship and Identity and mostly focus on the Identity aspect.
Now, it took me a little while to figure out RWBYs deal but I think the main themes for Volumes 1-3 are also Friendship and Heroism. Once again, I'll mostly focus on Heroism and touch on Friendship more briefly later.
I dont have much more to add to YGOs themes right now, so I'll briefly go over Heroism in RWBY.
In RWBYs setting there are these man-eating monsters called Grimm that have basically infected the planet. In order to deal with that, they have people called huntsmen and huntresses that kill them and protect people. Theyre trained at special academies like Beacon and go on missions there and stuff like that. Our four main characters, Ruby, Weiss, Blake and Yang, are training to become huntresses and one day they go on this mission to clean up a grimm infested city block with one of their teachers. Obviously, that takes a long time so they have to camp out in one of the empty houses. Weiss, Blake and Yang cant sleep because theyve been thinking about this question that their teacher asked them when they were fighting grimm: "Why do you want to become a huntress?"
They have a heart to heart and we find out about their motivations; Weiss wants to bring honour back to her family, Blake want to distance herself from the White Fang (that terrorist organization I mentioned earlier) and as an extension from Adam, Yang wants to have a life of adventure. They also talk about why Ruby wants to be a huntress and it turns out that she judt wants to help people. Unlike the others, she has no motivation besides that. We're meant to listen to that and look at her as a sort-of personification of Heroism: kind, but not naive, strong and most of all, selfless. The others on her team are not portayed as bad for not being like Ruby by any means but we are clearly meant to admire her the most out of all of them.
Okay, now comes the part Ive been looking forward to the most:
3. How did these themes evolve in the Modern Series'?
Alright, before we can really delve into the way they evolved in YGO I'll have to give you a brief summary of the character progression. At the start of DM, during the Duelist Kingdom arc, Yami Yuugi is just that; A darker Yuugi. Hes more confident, bolder, his voice is deeper, hes somehow taller, more ruthless, all that good stuff. Notably, he doesnt actually seem more skilled than Yuugi even at the start of this story, but he's still dependent on Yami. Yami on the other hand, has no identity of his own or even hints at one at this point. He's just The Other Yuugi.
Then during the Battle City arc, they find out that Yami was actually a pharao prior to being sealed in the puzzle, he just didnt know because of amnesia, I guess. So now they need to find out his real name and then send him to the afterlife because hes meant to be dead, but not before saving the world from being swallowed by darkness, which is also a thing they have to do now.
Then we finally get to the Memory World arc, where Yami, Yuugi and the rest of the gang astralproject to ancient egypt via puzzle magic. Yami is trying to figure out what the hell is going on and who all these familiar people are, while Yuugi & Co are trying their best to help him. Then some weird shit happens and it turns out that all of that is not just Yamis sealed away memories, but also a giant D&D Shadow Game that will destroy the world if Yami loses. So now theres Pharao!Yami who is still clueless on the metaphorical and literal playing field and Player!Yami, who is kinda controlling himself now? I guess?? Yamis opponent, The Spirit of The Ring, has something similar to that going on where hes both controlling and properly participating in the game. So Player!Yami is now fighting against Player!TSoTR, Pharao!Yami is now fighting against Thief King Bakura (who is like, the human, ancient egyptian version of the Ring Spirit) and Yuugi is now fighting against Yami Bakura (who is like, the human, modern japanese version of the Ring Spirit). Yuugi gets Yamis real name, he and the gang go over to Pharao!Yami and tell him his name, meanwhile Player!Yami is also somehow helping as well and they defeat the Ring Spirit, thus saving the world. Then they travel to modern Egypt, the Ceremonial Duel happens and Yuugi wins, sending Yami to the Afterlife where he can finally rest and that was the series!
I originally wanted to recount the stuff that was going on with the Ring Spirit and his host as well because they parallel eachother, but this summary is already far too long and I think youll get the point without me needing to explain any more.
My point here is, that the story went from being vaguely about Identity, maybe? to being very clearly about Self-Discovery and Learning to Be Independent. I think this is a very good way to evolve the messaging of your story. How does RWBY track on that?
Well, uh... its not great. I will acknowledge that they have tried to introduce new themes and ideas since, even though I wont really be talking about them in this post. But yeah, the whole Heroism thing really regressed.
Like, I didnt explicitly say it when I was explaining grimm earlier, but theyre not going away. The grimm have always been there and people who sign up to become huntsmen and huntresses are effectively signing up for a job that will never truly be done, no matter what they do. Characters like Ruby and even more minor ones like Phyrrah have shown us that that doesnt matter when youre a hero. No life isnt worth saving, no grimm isnt worth killing, no criminal isnt worth arresting. Then, in volume 6 they find out about Salem. Salem is the Big Bad of the show, shes immortal, controls the grimm and is supposed to be very powerful.
What do our heroes do? They give up. Sike! They were just mindcontrolled by monsters or some shit, of course they didnt give up their mission (which is to bring an Important Macguffin to a city called Atlas, sorry I didnt mention it)!
But then they arrive in Atlas (which is llike, a city thats floating over another city called Mantle) and yknow, they do some plot stuff thats not really important right now until the city gets invaded by Salem and this big grimm army she has.
What do our heroes do? Well, Ruby, Weiss, Blake and some side characters are chilling, drinking tea in a mansion and Yang and the B Team were actually trying to do something, but even those efforts seem incredibly minimal.
Oh wait, I also forgot to mention that Ironwood (a fairly minor, vaguely antagonistic character up until now) wanted to lift Atlas even higher to save Atleasian civilians from danger while leaving Mantle vulnerable to Salems invasion.
What would be the most heroic thing to do?
A) Let Ironwood lift Atlas, get as much support as they can down to Mantle and save as many Mantle civilians as they can from the invasion
B) Prevent Ironwood from lifting Atlas but then split up in order to protect both Atlas and Mantle civilians
C) Prevent Ironwood from lifting Atlas and then dont do anything else
Congrats! If you choose C, you think exactly like the writers!
And I just
This is so mindboggling to me, I feel like I shouldnt even have explain how this is bad. And like, it wouldve been so easy to actually make them seem herokc through their actions, to make it seem like they did try but no.
I have never seen a central theme be this botched, how in the world did they do that? Why did they think it was a good idea for Ruby "The Embodiment of Heroism" Rose to sit in a mansion doing nothing, no planning, no organizing just ..... God, how are they this bad? Like, this doesnt even have anything to do with it being planned in any way, this is just straight up incompetence
4. Very briefly touching on friendship
The friendship is awful and its not solely because they all have the same opinions. They barely interact with eachother outside their designated pairs which leads to it all feeling incredibly hollow. Theyre also practically indistingushable from one another now, which is a shame because it wasnt always like that. Like, I dont think the characters were that well-developed in earlier volumes but they were very well-characterized. But now we've gotten to a point where you can literally copy and paste one characters dialogue onto another and literally nothing changes, it really sucks.
5. Some closing words
Damn, this took way longer than I thought it would and now Im pretty exhausted. I have no idea how yall always write these but props to you! I feel like this ended up a bit rambly but overall, Im pretty proud.
Please let me know what you think of the points I brought up! Id also really appreciate some tips on how to get better at these longer posts because I am planning on writing more in the future (not the near future, probably but yknow).
Thats all I have to say for now, thanks for reading!

what frustrates me the most abt this china narrative is that the US created al qaeda and ISIS, those groups are recruiting and causing terrorism in xinjiang, china has been trying to handle the situation with re-education programs often suggested by westerners, and its still being treated as this major human rights violation. there are actually dozens of countries with several robust anti radicalization programs that are just as strict, like singapore, colombia, yemen, bangladesh, saudi arabia, and indonesia. this paper ive linked to was even funded by the DHS so like...why has detaining someone and basically reverse brainwashing them out of being a terrorist been so acceptable for so long but now its an issue?
if you take issue with chinas program, you have to prove its somehow exceptional to these other programs. since we really dont have any way of knowing what is truth or reality thanks to the enormous disinformation campaign going on, you fucking cant. we dont even know what the programs entail because even googling it gets you exclusively hyperbolic concentration camp accusations.
what i will say is that relations between the han majority and the uyghur minority have been strained since at least the 80s. link is the notoriously conservative and pro US intervention human rights watch, so dont say im using pro commie sources or anything. every time i do any bit of research on this i seem to find an attempt from major news outlets in the early to mid 2000s or late 20-teens to prove this all started or became dramatically worse now, but things have always been tense. and its not really a surprise that things really got bad after the collapse of the soviet union, an event that was geographically close to china and the xinjiang region and also just like, a fucking major global event in general.
what i find to be very odd is just how dramatically the narrative has changed. the diplomat, one of my favorite periodicals, went from taking very nuanced and balanced positions on xinjiang that i almost completely agreed with to being just as aggressive as outlets like the BBC and CNN in the span of five years. they have eleven pages worth of articles on xinjiang, mostly covering the terrorism and beijings response (which i agree is too harsh) and xinjiang muslims’ relationships to the greater muslim world.
an example is how this article talks about the conflict at the time which warns of escalating violence as a result of han chauvinism and beijing being unable to deal with the extremism holistically. it points out how there were uyghurs captured among taliban ranks in afghanistan and how many might have even been working with ISIL.
The threat will not be an existential one to the Chinese state, as most Uighurs would prefer a peaceful accommodation. But even if only 1 percent of Uighurs hold extreme views, there are 10 million in Xinjiang and even for a state security apparatus as formidable as China’s, 100,000 or more angry people present a tough challenge.
i think its totally right that china does not allow people in that area to have cars, woodcutting tools, and amonium nitrate (which is used in bombs) is very strictly regulated. i completely agree that this is not how you combat terrorism. most people do not want war and broadly punishing these people is itself a human rights violation that went unnoticed until now.
however, in that same year, the diplomat also published this article about the infamous turkestan islamic party. members of TIP are like, literal jihadists lmfao.
TIP fighters call on the world’s Muslims to join the jihad against Western countries in internet videos. Perhaps most worringly for China, the TIP believes that Muslims may fight locally using various means instead of coming to Syria and Iraq to conduct a “holy war” against the “infidel” Western regimes.
yeah i definitely want to hear more about what these guys have to say. the article is really good because i think it highly illustrates just how dangerous these people are. theyve killed hundreds of people across china and want to establish a fascist religious state in xinjiang. while the article speaks for itself, i believe the last paragraph really highlights why china is being singled out whereas countries like france and canada are considered allies to muslims for whatever reason:
However, as experience has shown, China takes a passive position in the struggle against global Islamic jihad in Syria and Iraq. Beijing has not sent its troops to the Middle East to fight ISIS and has instead confined itself to diplomatic support for Russia and the United States. The Chinese government uses the attacks of Islamic jihadists to persuade Western countries to support Beijing’s position on Xinjiang and turn a blind eye when the freedom and rights of Uyghurs are harshly suppressed by Chinese security forces. Therefore, China is not perceived by the West as a reliable partner in the fight against terrorism. [emphasis mine]
im just a little surprised to see that a lot of these violent attacks from extremists throughout the years have targeted not just han chinese but also other uyghurs. in the west people do not typically sympathize with terrorists as freedom fighters, even on the left, because we know that no matter how angry or how seemingly justified the violence might seem, terrorism is unacceptable and it grossly misrepresents islam. it is a fascist act because those terrorists often follow an extremely right wing version of islam. also, we know that those who carry out terrorist attacks even outside of the west are middle class and professionals in some way, not poor and marginalized people. the level of nuance afforded to terrorists outside of xinjiang is pretty staggering.
yet in china, there seems to be this excitement than they are killing chinese people, even if some of those chinese are other uyghers or otherwise muslims. those who carry out attacks in xinjiang dont get any nuance or analysis because theyre justified.
ive referenced the diplomat earlier but this article from 2013 says it perfectly: Call Tiananmen Attack What It Was: Terrorism. except terrorism is bad. and the west wants you to support the uyghurs. and make no mistake, they do not want you to support the millions of uyghurs who want to live peacefully, free of any repression, american or chinese. they want you to support the jihadists randomly blowing up chinese and tourists alike because you are meant to sympathize with their plight.
terrorism isnt something to be romantacized or cheered on. it is something someone or someones do when they feel they have no other option. people do not want to kill even those they feel they have every right to because thats a line you cant uncross. murder changes you, justified or not. see the last chapter of wretched of the earth for this.
terrorism is great, however, for destabilizing a region or a country, and xinjiang is resource-rich. establishing a US-friendly regime, no matter how good they are on human rights, is the goal. the US does not care about muslims. they do not care about human rights. china, also, does not really seem to care about muslims or human rights either. but we’ve seen this since vietnam, and the US has learned since vietnam. the vietnamese were sympathetic. they were minding their business.
after vietnam, merely being communist isnt enough to warrant invasion. theyre killing their own people. nevermind that bolsonaro kills his own people and no one wants to invade (yet--biden has mention sanctions wrt us which is scary but again, thats got everything to do with making sure latin america is loyal to the west, not HR offenses). korea, although it was before vietnam, was less publicized and learning from vietnam gave the US a valuable lesson: always blame the victim. and thus, the US blames the victims of its violence. even if its ‘justified’, even if its ‘true,’ as was the case with saddam hussein, invading and occupying was the nightmare no one but the imperialists anticipated. because they dont broadcast what occupying forces do to the occupied. i am old enough to remember abu ghraib. have it seared in my memory forever. you perhaps are also old enough to remember, but also think millions of abu ghraibs and guantanamo bays are always worth it, always justified.
i know people arent going to read this and remind me really rudely that they didnt read it but i want to really emphasize how one of imperialism and colonialisms features is ethnic and racial separatism. how the rwandan genocide couldnt have happened without previous belgian and french rule. how yugoslavia wouldve remained a single country had it not been for NATO. i think its easy to diminish the role of the colonizer in all of this, but it is actually one of its goals: divide and conquer. exacerbate the existing conflicts to the point of genocide.
and if the west succeeds in balkanizing china, you will get more racism rather than less. you will see more violence against muslim minorities rather than less. they will feel less empowered rather than more. china has to learn that they are also to blame in a way that will be catastrophic for over a billion people. han chauvinism and outright racism must be addressed beyond window dressing.
wrapping up, china is in the wrong here. what theyre doing is racist and humiliating a population that has to be empowered. and the one child rule, even for the han majority, is imo fucking evil lol like sorry tankie tumblr im tankie too but i cannot for the life of me accept that as a good thing.... but i also dont buy the accusations of genocide, because even tho a lot of these articles are kind of glossing over it, china is trying to handle the terrorism in the region. imo theyre feeding into it by getting more han in the area, but also having more han but forcing them to take worse jobs would be a show of good will. idk, this situation is extremely complex and frankly, most uyghers do not want secession.
i also take extreme issue with people saying that adrian zenz is somehow reliable. not only is he a nazi crackpot, hes also literally the only source for almost all of what we know about this in the west. that is not how you do journalism. i dont understand how people are saying ‘yeah hes an extremely fascist grifter but also i believe him because hes anti communist and also anti china’. thats also not really the point? the point is that hes also the ONLY SOURCE on almost all of this, which is alarming.
i also find it very startling that in order to keep interest in the story, every few weeks the US has to remind people that the chinese are also doing what the US is doing to women in its own camps. forget that the US is separating minors from parents (since 2008). forget that the US is sterilizing women en masse (since 2017). forget that the US is raping women at the border (since there was a border). forget the US even has camps because now they arent even called that anymore. this is not that ‘you can be angry at two things at once’ but a clearly cynical attempt to get its citizens to forget that the US is detaining, deporting, sterilizing, and raping, and gassing non US nationals.
they are not ‘your own people.’ they are me. the other. i am an immigrant to the US, currently in my country of birth, so i am the other to you, the american. the chinese are doing the evil crime of killing their own. but the americans could never kill their own because they dont consider black americans to be their own. latin american nationals are not their own. bombing millions globally is not their own. thats always justifiable. there is clearly an element of racism in how these crimes are perceived as more or less evil.
the way immigrants and black americans are brutalized in the US is almost naturalized. like its the way things are supposed to be. you can live with that. its upsetting that you have to hear about antiblackness and the like but you know thats just how life is. you dont necessarily call for the US to be sanctioned or bombed by other countries because you believe in the inherent goodness of white america. but countries like china and iran and north korea deserve to be starved and killed for their crimes. and you can never say ‘maybe bombing and starving a country isnt the answer’ because it means you agree with it. you can never say ‘this is clearly propaganda to make me hate another race so much’ because it means youre a genocide denier. im sorry, but again, i remember iraq in 2003, i remember libya in 2011. i dont buy it.
finally, theres been a lot of attacks on asian people in the US lately and if you cannot see the violent way the US talks about china the country and how that influences people to harm asians within the US then idk what else to tell you. people will really believe this shit and say the chinese are all blood thirsty islamaphobes and thus need to be harmed. ‘im not like that! i defend my asian friends from racism!’ thats nice and all but idk how spreading some sinophobic propaganda designed by the US to make you support some kind of violence against one billion chinese people isnt inherently racist. also its unhelpful because sanctions dont really solve problems. but ive spoken too much.

how did u do research for tnw!!!!!im only partway thru and the authenticity of the writing is.........mindblowing. is there any works tht u referenced writing tnw? what inspired u to write it? also the period typical way of speaking if great too!!! what did u do to research that?? and also thank u for writing such an incredible fic
Hi nonnie, thank you so much! I really appreciate you letting me know you’re enjoying the story! 🤗
I’ve written a little about some of the books I found most helpful and/or interesting while writing TNW here: recommended reads and about my research approach here: research methods/sources. I didn’t do a big study of actual written diaries of the time, though, because I had a pretty clear vision of how I wanted Bucky to sound and feel in the text, and I didn’t want to cross-pollinate with actual primary sources too much, but I definitely did read some letters, etc. and I visited museums that often quoted oral histories or letters or things of that nature.
Re: Inspiration
Broadly speaking, I’ve always loved the period and I inhaled movies and stories from the era. I can’t even tell you how many times I’ve seen Band of Brothers, for example. And so I think that interest primed the pump for me to tackle the story. As for what inspired me to write TNW specifically... There are three big reasons:
I was writing a chunk of what will become part of the future fic in this ‘verse and I quoted from Bucky’s CA:CW notebooks. It’s very disjointed, incoherent, misspelled, etc., and I thought: well, this would have more impact if we knew what his writing was like before. And so the idea of him having been a diarist, a word guy, kind of hit me. So I started writing a couple of excerpts, and then realized... I can’t write about this guy recovering himself, and recovering his memories, without knowing what those formative experiences are. So I realized I had to write the actual entire journal in order to have a rich foundation for characterization in the future.
I hated that CA:CW handled the reveal that WS=JBB in the most blasé way of all time, and that nobody seemed to care. I thought it didn’t make sense within the context of the Howling Commandos having trading cards and so I thought: wouldn’t it be interesting if Bucky Barnes was a cultural icon in his own right?
I felt like the immensity of World War II was downplayed in the films and often in fandom discussion and fic. It’s treated as a setting, not as a massive, overarching context and character in its own right, and I felt like there was an opportunity to use the war to understand not just who Steve and Bucky are, but also how a guy might go from being essentially Joe Brooklyn to the Winter Soldier. So part of TNW is meant to explore that psychological transformation, and address the vast trauma of World War II, which was the worst thing humans have ever done to themselves.
Re: period-typical speaking
🤔
You know, I sat here and stared at this question. I’m not really sure that I did any serious study of speaking patterns or anything. I definitely did a lot of etymology research, to make sure I wasn’t using idioms that hadn’t been invented yet, or slang terms that were inappropriate, etc. Mostly I asked myself what books Bucky might have read, what movies he would have seen, what songs he would have listened to, because those things find their way into our speech and thinking patterns. Hm. I think a lot of inspiration for Bucky’s style of storytelling-writing, especially when he’s recounting a conversation or something funny that happened, comes from where I live in Boston. Older folks here, “townies,” have a very particular style of storytelling:
“Okay, so I here I was, ah, goin’ down to the, fuckin’, the donut shop, and this guy says to me: hey pal, nice fuckin’ job clearin’ the snow off your goddamn car, and so I go, “what the fuck is it to you, asshole, I live down the goddamn street, I’m not goin’ on the fuckin’ highway, and so this punk keeps walkin’ like I didn’t say nothin’ and this other guy, real asshole, saw the whole thing, he comes up and yells to the other guy, hey motherfucker, he asked you a goddamn question!”
So, yeah, I think that probably inspired some of the way that Bucky tells stories: just a guy shooting the shit and busting balls with his buddies, if that makes sense. 😊
