You know what I don't ever much talk about here? My utter shit vision.
So fun fact; throughout my childhood I had perfect vision, 20/20, no signs of what was coming. My dad had crap vision and so did a fair amount of my aunts and uncles, but eh, we weren't too worried. Again, constantly passing the eye exam.
Then came fifth grade.
Now to further explain this, I think I should specifiy something to clarify a thing to make it clear my parents weren't being abusive or anything in context of what I'm going to say next. My older sister faked failing an eye exam at one point in elementary school because she thought glasses looked cool. It got out almost immediately when she saw the actual optometrist who was able to call BS and my parents were understandably unhappy with her.
The reason I mention that, is that when I did the eye exam in fourth grade again, perfect pass, 20/20 vision.
Then came fifth grade.
I bombed the test. I got then a 20/200, meaning I was seeing shit as if it was two hundred feet away from me rather than twenty. It was bad. School nurse told my parents to take me to see the optometrist since that is a very concerning shift.
They didn't, because the sheer scale of it made them think I was faking ala my sister back when she'd been in elementary school. Meaning I went through all of goddamn fifth grade barely able to see the board (my teacher had a classmate read things off for me/help me out since obviously couldn't see shit) which understandably lead to me not having the greatest year. Still passed and stayed in the middle school version of honors track.
So I complain repeatedly over the course of the year, and through the summer and finally my dad gets fed up with me bitching, and decides to 'play a prank on me'. Namely, he who also had 20/200 vision handed me his glasses. Now dad's expecting me to finally fess up once I put them on that I really can see, that I've just been faking.
My response?
"Oh that's so much better I can actually see the TV now!"
My parents' response?
"Oh shit Barid's being serious."
They made an appointment for me to see the optometrist ASAP (which still meant a week between, the man didn't have an appointment until then). Did the test there, 'wow your vision is shit!' and got my first pair of glasses.
From ages 11 through...19? I want to say 19. I was going through glasses twice a year, with fairly rapid shifts in steadily decreases vision. Blessedly my parents both had eye insurance through their jobs so I just rotated between, which is good because I very quickly had to go for the super expensive type of lenses that are some sort of special polycarbon because of how thick they were getting. Also needed shit like photogray since I was wearing them outside in the summer and thus needed sunglasses, and also shit like scratch proofing; for the record I still get all of those even though I also wear contacts, since I was told a few years ago to wear my glasses more since it's healthier for my eyes. Per my appointment this year that's working since my present optometrist noted my eyes are in much better shape than expected for someone who's vision is as shitty as it is.
I didn't start wearing contacts until college (couldn't get comfortable touching my eyes for the longest time). For those of you familiar with contacts, now at age 30 I wear -8.0 in contacts, and can if need be (such as me being out) wear -8.5 with minimal issue.
I only stopped needing to update my glasses on a yearly basis two years ago. Which hey, keeps the costs down! I apparently didn't even have any sort of shift this year when checked, just needed a new script to order contacts.
(Fun fact, by the way; my sister continues to have perfect vision to this day, and at this point is the only one in our immediate family like that)

The Cost To See
Some people are blessed with 20/20 vision; unfortunately, I am not one of those people. Currently, there are a bunch of available options in the market to allow for better vision. Glasses and contact lenses are some possible choices. In my case, I currently use Orthokeratology or Ortho-K contact lenses. These are made out of rigid gas permeable (RGP) lenses and personalized to your own eyes. It is meant to be worn overnight to reshape the cornea for clearer vision in the morning without the need for soft contact lenses or prescription glasses. I have been wearing Ortho-K lenses for about six years, and now I am trying to decide whether or not to continue wearing them or look at other substitutes.
Before making any decisions, I must briefly mention my sunk costs, the money that has been spent and cannot be recovered, which include the initial tests of my cornea, trial lenses, prescription emergency glasses, the frequent eye appointments, and the follow-ups, which amount to about $3,600. Considering that this cost was incurred years ago, it is irrelevant in the decision-making process because my decision would only impact the future and not the past; this cost should not be seen as a factor when determining which option is better. Therefore, my analysis is based on the additional cost of new Ortho-K contact lenses or the marginal cost (the additional cost of another product or unit). Soft contact lenses and glasses are substitutes for Ortho-K lenses as there is no need for all three, so to determine which type is better, rational economic decision-making requires the evaluation of costs and benefits.
Opportunity cost is the cost of something given up in order to get something else. My opportunity cost of a new pair of Ortho-K lenses is what I could have used with that money (such as daily soft lenses or on a pair of glasses). Total cost includes both implicit and explicit costs. First, let's look at the cost and benefit of Ortho-K lenses.
The following are my explicit costs:
Each new pair costs $360 and lasts about 2-3 years depending on personal maintenance, meaning that potential issues such as breaking them or having it fall down the sink would result in an additional $360 to get them replaced. Since I am looking at the cost each year, a new pair would cost $180 a year (or $120 a year if they last for 3 years but for my calculations I will use $180).
There is an appointment every six months, and those check-ups cost $120 yearly (or $60 every six months).
Ortho-K has complement goods: the two types of contact solution, AddiPak Vials that cost $21 for 100 vials (or $42 a year) and Clean Care Plus cleaning and disinfection solution for $24 (or $72 a year) as well as a $5 lens suction for removal.
This all amounts to about $419 a year.
Implicit costs, costs that don't require an outlay of money, include the inconvenience of carrying all the solutions and contact cases when traveling and getting enough sleep or risk blurry vision in the morning. This also includes my implicit opportunity costs, such as the time since my optometrist's office is about 30 minutes away in a heavily congested area which could have been spent doing something else. Since my appointments are early in the morning, my opportunity cost of waking up early is the additional hours I could be sleeping. Every decision involves trade-offs, and so in buying a new pair, my opportunity cost is the time and money I could have saved up and put in the bank for it to garner interest, for tuition, or more immediate expenditures such as for food or gas.
The most obvious marginal benefit of a new pair of Ortho-K lenses would be that I would be able to see better because, after 2-3 years of use, the lenses are typically scratched up and cannot shape my cornea effectively. Additionally, I can spend the day free from soft contact lenses or glasses because I have total visual clarity once I take them off in the morning. This means I don't have to worry about contacts falling off when I rub my eyes, I can easily cry without worrying about my soft contacts (you never know when a cry session is needed, it can happen at any time), and it is not as bulky as glasses which can also be easily lost or misplaced.
Now, let's analyze the costs and benefits of soft contact lenses. There are daily (single use) ones, bi-weekly, or monthly ones in the category of soft contact lenses. Generally, daily contact lenses cost can range from $480 to $720 for a year's supply, depending on desired comfort level. I do not have to incur any additional cost for daily contact lenses because the disposable pairs are pre-sealed with the solution and can be easily taken out with your hands. However, there is a potential negative externality on the environment through single-use lens packaging. In terms of bi-weekly or monthly contact lenses, it would cost around $300 for a year's supply, but the additional cost includes the solution. The solution (depending on the brand, size, and quantity) is typically about $150 to $200 a year. Implicit costs for soft contacts as a whole include the discomfort it can pose throughout the day, potentially forgetting to put them on, or it can fall out. The marginal benefit is also being able to see, not have to worry about getting enough sleep at night, and that it is more travel-friendly. Considering the explicit marginal cost, Ortho-K is comparable if not even cheaper than soft contact lenses.
In terms of glasses, the explicit cost varies depending on the frames, where the designer brands are more expensive. Still, the prescription lenses themselves are typically under $100—glasses on average cost about $200. The implicit costs of glasses are its bulkiness; sometimes they are inconvenient when doing sports or other activities, the inconvenience of putting them on and off throughout the day, and getting them lost or stolen, resulting in blurry vision. The implicit opportunity cost of glasses is the time lost from picking out frames and eye appointments. The benefits are that typically glasses last for a couple of years (1-3) depending on changes in eye prescription, and the frames themselves can last even longer since the lenses can just get replaced. Also, compared to soft contact lenses, they do not require disposable plastic packaging and thus more eco-friendly.
Tumblr media
We learned that one of the Ten Principles of Economics principles is that "Rational people compare marginal cost and marginal benefits." To choose to continue using Ortho-K lenses, my marginal benefit would have to exceed my marginal cost. Taking all of the cost and benefits into account, when looking at the margin, the marginal benefits of Ortho-K lenses do, in fact, exceed its marginal cost. I want to note that because my implicit cost and benefits are not easily quantifiable, I can only compare my explicit cost while only mentioning my implicit costs and benefits. For this reason, when determining which option is the best for me, I compare the explicit costs (as seen above in Fig. 1) and look at which option's benefit I value more and which implicit cost I deem is lower. Even though the benefits of each option share a commonality: being able to see better, I value the benefits of Ortho-K lenses more than the other options since I won't have to wear anything in the day. Despite the explicit costs of glasses being less than Ortho-K lenses, I find that the marginal cost for glasses exceeds the marginal benefit. Thus, it is in my best interest to continue using Ortho-K lenses instead of using soft contact lenses or glasses.

Being independent costs different amounts for different people. The cost of living on my own is higher than that of my brother, at least inherently. He probably spends a lot more on weed and booze (which I'm not judging him for) than I ever will because I don't drink unless it's offered to me and I only smoke once in a blue moon. But if we're just talking about what we need to get by month to month, my cost is higher than my brother, H.
So everyone in my family has the same genetic predisposition to depression, anxiety, and ADHD but I managed to get a double dose where as H got a tasting. I'm not saying he doesn't struggle, but how we're affected by that differs. H has spent most of his adult life unmedicated (aside from booze and weed) but I can't function without high doses of a handful of medications. When I age out of my parents insurance, I may not be able to pay for my medicine anymore which is terrifying so I have to prepare for that in my budget and maybe even be ready to pay full price on occasion. Not to mention, I'm visually impaired. So I need to be able to pay for a yearly eye exam, and at least 2 pairs of glasses and there are a lot of extra costs associated with my prescription. So even if I opt to never wear contacts, I'm still in the hole about 200$ a year which isn't much but is still an expense that H, who has 40/20, doesn't have to contend with.
If I completely ignore OTC migraine medication and just suffer through the pain, then I'm still paying 665$ for my pills.
So, in order to live independently, I have to deal with an extra 865$ per year that my brother doesn't have to and that's just bare bones essentials. It doesn't account for emergency situations, chiropractic appointments, and therapy. It's not an undoable expense but it's certainly a speed bump between me and living on my own.
Being disabled is expensive, so forgive me if I live at home a little longer than most people. I pay my rent by doing dishes and taking care of the houseplants.
