Cruz sighed with a mocking wistfulness, leaning back in her chair as she pretended to brush her fingernails off on her shirt, glancing down at them down her nose.

But then she let that fade away, allowing her fondness for her friend to shine brightly through her smile as she told Mirabel, "Eh, no use in pondering the impossible. We're in too deep, babes, you're stuck with me now."

Cruz had actually been super stoked about moving out this year! Hence why she’d opted to when she could have easily stayed at home. Don’t get her wrong, she loved her mum and grandfather, they were like the best house mates a gal could ask for. But it was apart of the experience!

But she had sort of neglected on getting her part of the room set up this year. She’d been more focused on helping out with getting everything ready for the Grand Prix program that she had basically forgotten to move in at all, as it had just been easier to go home and crash. Super speed made any distance in Swynlake a breeze, you know.

Anyway, she was getting it down now! And was making it her mission to get to know her roomie because Cruz was determined to not be the nightmare roommate everyone always talked about their first year in!

“Do you like the set up?” she asked, having only put her sheets on the bed and her stuffed animal friend that had been dragged around with her since she was a kid. “Like, where your desk is and everything? I mean, we can probably change it any time during the year, too, but just to start out, you know.”

This year, the 10th anniversary of the exhibition, saw a record-breaking show attendance of over 80,000 gamers queuing to play their favourite titles of tomorrow. The hall was certainly buzzing from start to finish. Soon after I arrived I did a quick lap of the hall to get my bearings, and then dived right in, and here are my top picks from the games played this year. Super Mario Odyssey There was only one way to start my time at EGX, with my most anticipated game to be released. Before even picking up a controller I have been hearing for weeks how it is 'the complete Mario game' and the 'best since Galaxy 1 and 2'. To say the hype train was running full steam doesn't quite cover it. And wow, I was not disappointed. I ran a demo level set in the Sand Kingdom, which straight away looked bright, colourful, and fun. The area was vast for a Mario title, and reminds me of the 64 days. Those who have played previous titles will feel right at home with the controls and direction the game takes you in. What I really wanted to try out was the new hat feature. By moving both Switch controllers in a forward swinging motion (or a button press if you prefer), Mario will launch his hat in the direction he faces. This can be used for collecting items, hitting switches, but more importantly, for possessing the body of the enemies in that level. The main enemies to take control of in this particular level were Bullet Bill and a funky sunglass-wearing statue called Miruzou. By successful capturing them with a throw of your hat you take control of their movements and abilities. Bullet Bill I can see being particularly challenging in later levels as he continuously moves forward, so working out your end goal and obstacles to avoid hitting before you reach it will be key, as will improvising on the fly as obstacles cross your

Cruz waited but was pleased when she saw the smile on Mirabel's face. She gave a single, sure nod of her head at the gratitude. She knew Mirabel hadn't asked her for advice or anything and that she was sticking her nose were it wasn't supposed to be, but that was the small town-er in her. It was hard to resist sometimes! Like when it showed up on your front door.

"Pffftt, never apologize for that. I'm here to be a sound board," she said, waving her hand to dismiss any worries that she was bothered. The only thing that had gotten under her skin was the note itself and how unnecessary it was.

"And I will take cryptic notes so long as they're cute love notes or something. Or a puzzle on how to get to a good slice of chocolate cake or something," Cruz smiled, rolling forward in her chair so she could give Mirabel's leg a pat-pat before going back to her desk. "Okay, I've seriously got to finish this assignment. Stop being interesting for, like, an hour."

Cruz regarded her roommate and friend for a moment as admiration welled up because she'd been witness to the ups and downs of Mirabel's love life. The Alice of it all, the Candace of it all, the firefighter, the girl who'd left the weird-ass note on their door. But this was a show of emotional intelligence. At least, from Cruz's perspective it was. To be able to say I'm in pain and here's why without blaming anyone showed a level of maturity Cruz didn't know people their age were capable of.

And yet, there was Mirabel.

"Now you're speaking my language," she said, as the person who believed there was nothing a good run couldn't fix. "And, hey, if you ever want to talk about it more or whatever else, you know I'm always here, right?"

Cruz's expression softened and fell as she listened to Mirabel describe Penny. It was sweet. It made her chest tighten because obviously Mirabel really liked her, but the fact that it was something that was out of either their control that had caused the separation was...it sucked!

"You don't have to apologize. Judgement free zone, remember?" Cruz said, hooking her thumb toward the sign she'd made with those exact words and posted on her wall above her desk for these very occasions. "I'm sorry if making you talk about it is making it worse. We don't have to if you don't want to, but...for what it's worth, I doubt she was being nice just because that's how she is. It's also probably because she cares about you, and wants you to be happy."

Cruz frowned at this because...waaah? What did that mean? Mirabel had known they were going to get blasted all over the internet? Then– oh. She meant about the breaking up part of it, since Mirabel had been the one to pull the trigger on that decision.

Hm.

"Did she have anything to say about it?" Cruz found herself asking. "Or did she understand where you were coming from?"

Mostly because she was interested to know if it had been an amicable parting or if she was going to be needing to act a certain type of way if she saw this girl around campus.

Cruz nodded slowly to this because yeah. Yeah, she knew. She wasn't the most confident girlie around, believe it or not!

"Yeah. I get that," she said. "But she grew up in that world, right? Not to say it's any easier, because woof who wants their secondary years put out there for all to see? But, you can't really compare yourself to how she handles her social media versus how you do. She's had the practice.

"And that's a totally valid reason. I'm not trying to knock you for your decision. I think it's good you know what you want and what you don't and are setting boundaries!" Cruz amended, not wanting to sound like she was putting Mirabel down when she was no doubt already sad about the whole thing. "I'm sorry everyone else had to ruin it for you guys. I wish people didn't have to be weird about celebrities and we could all agree to be normal."

That's what was going through Cruz's mind, unfortunately. Flimsy. See, there was a lot of times that a kid would go down during a drill or something and be 'hurt,' when really Cruz knew it was just them trying to come up with an excuse as to why they didn't preform like they wanted to. Not exactly like the men in soccer when they rolled around on the ground and held onto their shins like their competition had just taken a hammer to them, since they were trying to get the Oscar for best Penalty, but it was along those lines.

And right now, Cruz felt like Mirabel was laying on the field citing a cramp while the real reason she'd missed the play was yet to be said.

"Cut out for what, exactly?" she asked. "As in the attention? Or being with her in that kind of relationship?"

"Sure," Cruz agreed right off the bat, bright. Then she shifted her expression with the skepticism that filled her, "Still doesn't change the fact that she did it. Have whatever sympathy you can, but that's not an excuse for...this!"

She didn't even know what to call it anymore. It was juvenile, but Cruz still felt like she was only 16 herself most of the time. Texting her mum every day, having to google how to do simple things like how to change her credit car pin number, not knowing how to navigate certain confrontation. They were in uni. They were all growing!

It was just different when someone was treating her friend like this for a learning moment. And she didn't want Mirabel just to roll over because she felt bad.

"You were right the first time around, you did nothing wrong. This is obviously something she's insecure about and thinks she's getting out ahead of it by blowing you off or whatever. So, you can give her the benefit of the doubt, but don't let her make it seem like it was your fault, okay?"

Hmmm.

The more Mirabel went on, the less Cruz thought she understood. Because at first, Cruz got it.

Being famous? Sounded like a rough gig for sure. Especially these days when the internet allowed people to be mean for no reason and not have to face the consequences of their words or actions, and it could be put right on your phone's notif screen. Ahh, nothing like a hater in the inbox for a wake up call.

And, look, it wasn't like McQueen was Penny Forrester famous, but Cruz had often wondered what it would have been like if people had known her as Lightning McQueen's Daughter rather than anything else. The fans of the Magick Grand Prix weren't as scary as a the Sidney movie star, but they were a passionate community. Cruz was used to being in her little pocket of the world in Swynlake, she would have probably busted a gasket if what had happened to Mirabel had happened to herself.

But the family stuff....hmm....

"Did you talk to your family about it?" She felt a little bad about poking at Mirabel's reasons, looking for the holes, but she also wanted to know! "Because I always saw your family as supportive. Were they really that bothered?"

She nodded because yeah! Cruz also wanted to know, and hoped that Mirabel would come back to fill her in on how that conversation went. Gossip and drama wasn't necessarily something that interested her but, hey, when your friend and roomie was getting hit with it, it was hard to ignore.

"Of course! Just let me know if you need back up. Or an escape route. Or if you need to plant a note of your own. No one would even know I was there," she said. Demonstrating this further by holding up her hand so that her index and forefinger were pointing down, resembling two legs. She wiggled them quickly, moving them to the left as she made the woosh sound effect, and then back to the right.

"How'd you meet her? Have you told me this?" she asked. "Can I even be asking this? I can stop. Sorry, I feel like I've just become all in on the Crazy Girl Saga now. "

Cruz dragged her desk chair a little closer to Mirabel's bed so as not to be as far away as she would have been had she sat on her side of the room. Her brow furrowed at the supposed reasoning that Mirabel was allegedly fine. Because...uh...Cruz was pretty sure that the person who did the breaking up could still be upset about it!

And it seemed like that was the case, as Mirabel went on to explain more. Though it only made Cruz more confused!

"Can I ask why you think you didn't have a choice?" she asked, tilting her head.

Cruz hadn't thought it was a relationship relationship, but hadn't known what else to call it since technically it was still a relationship, right? Anyway, as far as Cruz was aware, Mirabel hadn't been in anything, like, substantial since Alice. She didn't expect anything significant to happen without Cruz noticing.

"Seems like she already thinks it's a whole dramatic thing if this was her first thought," she said, eyeing the note. "She's new to town, right? Does she, like, not know that the Spill isn't serious? Or is she just that self conscious?

"Not to psycho analyze or anything, I'm just trying to understand how she thought this was the move. Maybe then you can have a game plan going into the conversation. Other wise she'll probably just think you're attacking her or something and not want to have an actual conversation about it." Because, clearly, she wasn't good about that if she'd rather resort to sticking notes on people's doors.

No, this kind of confrontation was not easy. Having to deal with people's oh-so fragile egos, especially if they were heavily tied to some sort of trauma or resonating experience that had hurt them to make them react so dramatically, was something to tread carefully upon. And if you were like Mirabel, who was pleasant and lovely and very nice, then Cruz could imagine it was all the harder.

Personally, she wouldn't have dealt with something like that as Mirabel was. It was one thing to not think highly of one's self, it was another thing entirely to dismiss someone else's feelings just because they were so blind sided by their own. And to do this whole thing over a note? Blegh. What was this? Primary school?

She recognized she was being harsh toward Miss Joanna Vane, but she was playing on Mirabel's side of the court right now. Even if that meant Mirabel herself was going to be on Joanna's team.

"Couldn't agree more. I guess I get not wanting to deal with the confrontation if she's anxious about that sort of thing, but...I hate to throw shade on someone you like, Mira, but it just makes it seem like she doesn't respect you enough to have a say. Which you deserve to have since you're apart of the relationship, too," Cruz said. "Do you think she'd answer a text or something? To set up a meeting? Because I don't think you should have to track her down."
