You gave wide smiles to the paparazzi as you walked into the house. Other than the lack of light and the loud music all around, you noticed the main guests this party was for: all of the F1 grid. You saw every picture posted on his account, along with every one he was tagged in. But so did he. And every picture you took holding a man that wasn’t him a little closer than usual had him gritting his teeth and holding his phone a little tighter than usual. To be fair, you knew what you were doing without looking at it; you helped pick the photos for your social media, thinking about what reaction you’d get from the driver if he were to see them.

Of course, you greeted every one of them, talking loudly so you could be heard over the loud music. What a season! They deserve the break and whatever party is thrown for them, although you were sure they’d rather sleep. The other driver you actually got along with was Lando, so as soon as you went and said hello, the conversation went smoothly, catching up with the last few months. You couldn’t help but eye the Spaniard from the corner of your eye, sliding the tip of your fingers along the side of Lando’s arm as you laughed lightly at a joke he cracked. Carlos couldn’t just walk over and snatch you away from his friend and colleague, slapping his hand away even if it wasn’t touching you, so he decided to play your game.

Approaching another guest, she giggled as you watched the Spaniard move his lips, finishing with a grin playing on them. He eyed you almost directly, but somehow the woman in front of him didn’t notice. At this point, the conversation with Lando had faded out a bit, and he offered to go get you a drink, which, after turning back to him to stop looking at Carlos, you accepted. You stood there for a second. You weren’t going to let Sainz win the game you started. To your luck, Rudy Pankow walked right past you and, upon noticing, greeted you right away. Looking back at the Spaniard, who now had his hand placed very lightly, almost not touching the hips of the woman in front of him, as they both laughed, you hugged the blonde actor tightly and longer than usual. You held his arms, asking him how he was doing and how everyone was. He replied to you, but everything you could focus on was the Brunette man giving you a quick look, your eyes meeting for just a millisecond as the woman hugged him tightly while telling him something he genuinely didn’t care about at the moment.

"Rudy, that’s so nice." You said this as he told you all about what he was filming at the moment. He lowered his head slightly to hear what you needed to say, and reaching your mouth to his ear, you continued. "I really need to go touch up; I won’t take long, promise."

With that, you walked to the bathroom. It didn’t take you long to find it, but to your surprise, the bathroom was huge. There was a long counter with a sink and a vase with flowers placed on the other end, two round mirrors along that wall, and not one person was in there. Right after you left his field of vision, the one and only Carlos Sainz rushingly left the embrace of the woman, whose name he didn’t even remember, and without saying goodbye, basically ran after you.

As you looked at yourself in the mirror, carefully running your fingers through your hair to fix it up, a silhouette showed up behind you. And without even looking carefully, you knew exactly who it was. "Carlos Sainz. You looked like you were having fun over there."

Accessible agere #2: image descriptions

Time to talk about image descriptions!

What are they?

An image description is using words to say what's happening in a picture. For example, a photo of a red ball would be described as "a red ball."

Why are they used?

Image descriptions help people who are blind or have low vision, as well as some people who have visual processing issues, to be able to know what an image is, the same way most people would with their eyes.

How do I write one?

I'm not the best person to explain, because my language issues make them difficult for me to do, so I'm using information from other websites (linked at the bottom of the post.)

Think about what's most important to you or jumps out right away when you look at the image you're describing. What is the main focus of it? If you were telling someone about it, what would you say to them?

Don't over complicate it! Use simple, easily understandable language and put the most important parts first and in the most detail. Try to keep it to 125 words or less if possible.

How do I add them to my images?

Tumblr has the ability to add descriptions to images! Click the three dots that appear on an image in a post you're making and select "add alt text." Pictures that have alt text added will have a badge that says ALT that you can click to show the text.

Can I add them to someone else's post?

You can't directly add them to an already posted image without editing the post, but you can reblog and add a description in regular text.

Do I have to do them for every image? What if I can't?

Ideally, every image would be described, but that's not always possible. You might not know how to describe something, or you might not have the energy for it. You can try reaching out to other people for help with it. If it's an image of text, like a interaction banner or a screenshot, you can put it through an image to text converter. If you can't describe it at all, tagging the post as "undescribed" can help people who need image descriptions to avoid it by filtering it out!

hey, I saw that you put in your tags that a plain text image description underneath the image is more accessible than alt text and I'm just curious as to why that is (it being more accessible, not why you said it)

also, if you know, is this a tumblr specific accessibility thing or does it apply to wider web design?

For one example, screenshots of twitter posts automatically come with "ALT text", but it only describes the text in the "main" post, and doesn't describe any images or replies, even if they're in the post itself, so most of them time they're missing more than half the information that's required.

Since most people don't bother checking alt text, it's not obvious to most people that the post isn't accessible, so having it in plain text is one surefire way to make sure everyone can tell if a post is misleading or missing crucial information.

tumblr itself is also incredibly notorious for glitching and changing things without warning or caring about community feedback, so while tumblr alt text in the best case scenario might be completely accessible at some point, that can change at any time with no warning. A few months ago the alt text was white text against a neon purple background, which made it inaccessible for people who needed to physically read it who couldn't use screenreaders.

I think it would be a good idea to treat plain text image descriptions as a good default, since they're usually more accessible.

im trying to like make the new dash usable and just... it dont

heres the main things im having trouble with in no particular order

there needs to be extra padding on top of the site, it feels claustrophobic without the buffer of the previous Top Dash

ad-free, domain, and store dont all need to have separate icons, just incorporate domain and ad-free into the store

settings are always the furthest down, idk if this is a rule but it feels very intuitive, same as account being at the top or at the bottom never in the middle

the icons are too small and more notably the text makes it very cluttered! you can have text for the store but other than the store and activity feed* the icons are generally the same as other sites and dont need explanations

*the activity feed also dont need text because its a tactile tab, as soon as notifications become a thing you have to worry about then you will click on the tab

the simple create a post button should be where the rest of the activity is, hiding it in the corner will do no good to anyone

this is a me specific problem but i have tumblr opened in a minimized window so i can use two tabs on the same screen and it feels crushing to be encapsulated on all sides by Stuff, let us navigate recommended blogs and the radar in the explore tab instead, it feels like that is where theyre supposed to be rather than on the main dash

personally i would love if search went back to the left hand side and maybe the sidebar thats replacing top bar went to the right side but those are minor issues

heres some other changes that i think would be good for the site in general

in the explore tab; dont default to Today, default to For You if you want to drive engagement, or trending, @staffs choice

rename Staffs Picks in the explore tab to Radar since they seem to be the same thing, staff doesnt have a great image so it might get more use in it if the dash name is used

like solitarelee said; it would be amazing to have custom dashs for different blog content, having a tab specifically for content from your followed tags is nice but having separate dashes can really be expanded on (and if you want to consider the option then this could be monetized as in you get 3-5 free custom dashes and then you pay per added dashboard, this should however be brought up to the users first because if the number is too low staff and automattic will simply be seen as evil)

PLEASE rename Manage to Labs or something, its much cooler and is more indicative of what you're getting from the tab as manage usually comes with Manage Settings, adding a beaker icon to the sidebar for labs content could even be a good idea to get people interested in it

i am begging on my hands and knees for staff to have a public dev log, please look at how the minecraft community eats up the mojang patch notes and understand that this would be good here too. warn us about upcoming changes like the dashboard update and treat us as costumers rather than shareholders, we dont want to solve an ARG to understand what you're going to do with our primary social site, we want to be told straight up whats happening so we can continue to make informed decisions about what we want to do with the site

something im surprised hasnt been done is tumblr adding an optional tutorial on how to use the site upon account creation, maybe it exists, maybe it doesnt, it should be optional and also the no tags warning should be able to be toggled in settings

Very important edit: Ladd Ehlinger, the creator of the 2007 film that’s free on youtube, is an extremely racist and misogynistic conservative. He made a political ad so blatantly racist and sexist that youtube has literally resstricted it, so that you can’t share the link outside the site. Simply google his name and you will see dozens upon dozens of articles about how bigoted he is.

Please be aware of what kind of person made that movie when you watch it. His bigotry is baked into the movie, and is why he refused to actually do anything with the original political commentary from the book.

You are not a bad person if you already watched the movie and enjoyed it, but you do need to be aware of what kind of person made it and how that affected the movie, and make sure others are warned. He is also here on tumblr with the username filmladd. I highly recommend blocking him.

What does your “partially inaccessible” tag mean? I see them all the time and always forget to ask

oh hello! if there's undescribed image or audio in a post but some of the post is still accessible i'll tag it. like if there's a bunch of text and one attached image without alt text, or if a video's audio only is described.

for posts with any of this i use #inaccessible if the whole thing is picture/audio/video, #partially inaccessible if i nebulously think the main point is still accessible, and #partially accessible if it's mostly inaccessible

i don't distinguish between visual and auditory accessibility, and i don't know if people with screen readers might just prefer to skip all these types of posts. it's just a thing i saw people kinda doing and now i somehow have a few dozen active followers. if anyone is helped by these tags, i'd be grateful for any feedback

Hello :) First of all: thank you for providing so much help for the indie rp community. I have some questions that I hope you could help me with?

1. Is there a convenient way of using gifs from gif packs for replies? Do I just save them all on my computer (which might be a hard thing to do especially for mumus) and then just drag & drop them into my replies, or is there a more practical way?

2. Is there a list of faceclaims that are widely unaccepted in the rpc (preferably including the reason why they are unaccepted)? There are a lot of fcs I would like to use, but I'm unsure whether they are unproblematic to use or not.

3. Is it okay to reblog all resources on a sideblog (with the main blog clearly linking to said sideblog, of course) in order to not spam the dash?

1. I open the gif page and right click on the gif I want, selecting "copy image URL" and then paste the URL in the RP reply. To get rid of the box under the GIF which appears when you post, press the link icon on the gif and delete the text in there.

2. Although problematic is subjective I think most of us can agree that some people are a hard no. I'd say that there are faceclaims who are unacceptable and should be unacceptable but not all people believe that, for one randomly off the top of my head I don't think anyone should be using Ezra M*ller (abuser). If you add a fc's name at the end of my url, for example dear-indies.tumblr.com/tagged/Ezra M*ller without the * you'll find posts about them, so please feel free to /tagged/ search the faceclaims you want to use to see if there's any posts and alternately you're more than welcome to message me too! Same with searching Google!

Also, I've accidentally suggested people who are gross and people have let me know (assuming I didn't know which was correct!) so please don't stress yourself about it too much.

3. And I'm sure that'll be ok! A lot of resource makers don't get their things reblogged (sometimes not even liked) which is a huge problem right now so as long as the blog clearly states that it's connected to X I don't think that'd be a problem but of course content creators please chime in if you think otherwise!

Twitter | CounterSocial | Mastodon Feature Comparison

Here are some of my observations of feature comparisons between Twitter, CounterSocial and Mastadon. I've been using Twitter for more than a decade, CounterSocial since late April 2022 and Mastodon via Universodon for only a few days.

This is only a brief overview of what each site has to offer. It's some of the basics and features I find the most useful. Your experience may vary. My explanations are below.

A NOTE ABOUT MASTODON

Mastodon is a network of social networks that are interconnected. You have to choose an instance (or server) to get started. You can change your server, but your posts won't follow you. Whether or not your followers move with you depends on their server's software supports move activity.

There is also a very heavy cooldown period in which you cannot migrate again, so be very careful before using this option!

ADVANCED WEB LAYOUT

If you're looking for a column based feed, you'll need to use a third party website or app if you're a Twitter user. CounterSocial (herein referred to as CoSo) enables the Advanced Web Layout by default and Mastodon allows you to enable it optionally in your profile/settings.

ALT TEXT REMINDER

Twitter is the only platform that will remind you if you haven't entered ALT text on an image before you submit your post. Both CoSo and Mastadon have gentle overlays if you hover over the image once you've attached it to your draft, but beyond that I'm unsure. Mastadon claims to have a reminder to add ALT text (at least within the Universeodon instance). I have not uploaded any images to Mastadon yet, so time will tell.

AUTO-DELETE POSTS

Only Mastadon gives you the ability to auto-delete your posts after a certain time period for free. CoSo does have limited functionality for direct messages that you have to opt-in to. Pro (paid) subscribers can use the exploding post option on a per post or "set as default" basis.

BOOKMARKS

Twitter has bookmarks, but I often forget they exist. There is a link to view bookmarks in one place, but it just doesn't engage me. CoSo does not have bookmarks, however I believe it's a feature they could possibly implement since they appear to be running on Mastodon's OpenSource software and Mastodon, does indeed have bookmarks. My bookmarks have their own column for visbility.

CHARACTER LIMIT

Both CoSo and Mastadon beat Twitter's 280 character limit allowing 500 characters each.

CONTENT WARNINGS

While Twitter only has content warnings integrated for images, CoSo allows you only to mark the entire post with a content warning, wheeas Mastodon allows you to mark either the image, the post or both.

FILTERS

Twitter has muted words, etc. They're buried deep in your profile. Both CoSo and Mastodon have links to muted users, blocked users, hidden domains and muted words on the three dots menu next to your profile image.

GLOBAL POST VISIBILITY

Post visibility has a lot to do with how many users are on the platform, but these three are all very unique.

As far as Twitter goes, you see who you follow, what you might like, what the accounts you're following like, reweets, trending, etc., but discoverability is limited. Hashtags (tags) are a free-for-all (though nowhere near off the chain as Tumblr), so any custom hashtag can be used (without spaces, sorry Tumblr).

I believe CoSo sets themselves apart in this arena the most because they set up curated tags that help customize your space, find others with similar interests and share with others like you. Again, no spaces here. There's also the community firehose with posts from all of CoSo. You still have who you follow in your main feed and what they repost as well, not what they like, not what you might like and all that jazz. YOU curate your space.

Mastodon is a bit trickier. You have to join an instance (or a unique server), then you have a feed for who you follow and their reposts, then you have your server's posts, then there are posts from ALL the servers using Mastadon. In minutes you can have thousands of posts come through the feed. It can be too much. Again, not what other folks like (favorite), what you might like and all that jazz. You do curate your space, but you might either have fear of missing out (FOMO) or be overwhelmed in a sea of posts.

GROUPS

Groups are a paid feature only available on CoSo at this time. However, one might consider the instance (server) you join on Mastodon as a group depending on its specialization.

MOBILE APPS

All have both Android and iOS apps. Twitter's mobile app seems to be the most comparable to its web app, however if you're a content creator with a business/professional account, some features can't be accessed, such as overall analytics.

You won't get the advanced web layout with any.

CoSo has some web only features outside of advanced web layout, but it doesn't really affect the mobile app experience in my opinion. They're more bells and whistles.

I'm using the official Mastodon app and I can't quite tell what's going on there, but I feel like I'm missing out. On that note, there are quite a few free and paid third party apps available. It looks like Fedilab for Android has the most robust features and gives you more of the web experience. I cannot comment on iOS apps at this time.

ADS

Twitter's main revenue stream is ads. Neither CoSo or Mastodon have ads. CoSo is community funded, much like the individual instances (servers). Mastodon itself is a gGmbH (a German form of a non-profit LLC) as of 2021.

POST EDIT

The ability to edit posts is a featue of Twitter Blue, which recently increased in price to $7.99 (USD) per month. With Twitter Blue, you can edit a tweet up to five times within 30 minutes.

CoSo only allows the abiity to delete and re-draft. It saves you the work of rewriting the post, but you lose all likes (favorites), retweets (boosts) and comments.

This is where Mastodon excels. So far, I've been able to edit my post with no loss of anything for over 24 hours. I will continue testing to see how this feature works.

PUBLIC LANDING PAGE

Twitter's public landing page is in the form of a URL and is available to all account types. It's cluttered with sidebars.

CoSo offers a clean public landing page for Pro users (paid account). They currently charge $4.99 per month for a Pro account and have a variety of features.

TAGS

Again, no spaces allowed in tags on any of these platforms. All three allow use of custom hashtags, but I find CoSo's curated tags to be of the utmost help in seeing posts and finding users that are like-minded. Since they're curated, discoverability is much higher. Both CoSo and Mastodon allow you to pin tags, as well as have multiple tags within a pinned column. Twitter does not allow you to follow tags (hashtags).

VERIFICATION

Twitter has opened up verification to all by integrating it within Twitter Blue, somewhat making it meaningless, in my opinion.

As far as I can tell, you cannot verify your user profile itself on either CoSo or Mastodon, but if you're a website owner, you can verify your website. This is the extent of what I've tried.

OVERALL

I prefer CoSo overall, however two features that I would love to see implemented over there are better post-editing and a bookmarks feature. What wins me over the most about CoSo, though, is the curated tags. It really makes the user experience more friendly and increases discoverability.

i do love to improvise, and i do love realistic drama, but i’d prefer out-of-character permission before anything gets way out of hand. i do control how my character acts and what he thinks and says, and wish for no forced motions or putting words in mouths.

i have a very whimsical, formatted way of writing: i write in novella and multiple para. my preferred style is present-tense, third person. sometimes i’m dialogue-heavy. sometimes i use icons, and sometimes i don’t. sometimes a line of dialogue might seem confusing or mushed together for a lyrical word scramble, or my character tends to repeat things already mentioned/translated to him in a reply previous: this is purposeful, and part of a character quirk. i’m more than willing to translate ic babble out-of-character if it’s needed.

SHIPPING

this character flirts. he comments openly of physical, mental, and spiritual beauty, but that never means that I, the writer, am forcing a romantic/etc. relationship. i encourage any and all ic reactions that happen in result.

with shipping, i would like chemistry first and foremost. my character is romantic, but not enough to tie the knot immediately, at least without involved plotting. there will be smut on this blog, but everything is put under a ‘read more’ and will be tagged appropriately. i will not write smut or explicit themes with anyone under 20, & i will block minors.

i have no problem shipping with duplicate characters, or canon characters, so long as the relationship is solid. talk to me ooc! i’m sure we could figure something out.

GENERAL

i have a timeline on my verses page for the three Dragon Age games made by Bioware, in which the main verse of this character is borne. i have played all three games, and i am very diligent over yt playthroughs and thought-provoking meta. the timeline on my verses page does give yearly points over where my character has been, but they are not fixed points. a thread, or an ask, can completely commence whenever, wherever, all depending on the people involved.

this is a lore and irl magick-based blog, which will include blood and drugs and great, mystic topics, with questionable symbolism, nudity, and sexual situations. i will always tag anything not safe for work, but please tell me if i miss a trigger.

posting your fic in multiple places. not everyone is on ao3, consider other fanfic specific webbed sights -some of the best fics I have read were exclusive through personal connections on google docs. You could also consider opening things like a kofi for sharing writing if you want. (altho its important you don't link any commerce avenues to Ao3. it's against policy and will get your account deleted, for legal reasons)

joining/making community of people who share your passion for fan works or a certain fandom. and then working to make it a Nice place to share these things, by supporting other artist. the most engagement I ever got on ao3 was due to the fact that I had joined discords specifically focused on my fandom, and all of us would wait with bated breath for fics to be written and shared. so we could go read comment and share them in other places.

supporting other fan works in general! comments and kudos often contain a link back to your profile! if you give a thoughtful comment (or a comment at all on a obscure work). and I often check the profiles of comments from like-minded people to see if they have any works that might fit my tastes.

Share your fics in public spaces. things like a tumblr post with a copy of your description and an image of your tags can help people who aren't constantly on Ao3 remember that there are cool fics out there.

work on your writing skills in general. people are more likely to share writing that is well crafted. and while it's completely valid, (and honestly joyful for me personally) to post or read something that isn't completely polished. refining your skills can help make you stand out.

making your fics Acessable! more people will enjoy your fan works if they Can actually consume them! Ao3 supports alt text for images. and that's a great start to making more people Able to enjoy your works. but consider also looking into HOw to write alt tex in ways that are actually helpful to screen readers. along with how to break your text up visually so dyslexic readers can better read your works. (there are tags for these things too! and people who need/prefer these accommodations Will use those!)

Working to slow pace of fandom. i hear time and again from fandom elders (elders lol, I mean anyone like 30 and above and that is NOt elderly) that the immidancy of media in the modern age has shortened the amount of time people are doing fandom things. (which hurts fanfiction culture hard because it takes so much energy and time to write!). things like competing Streaming services, time crunches at media corporations, algorithmic fandom spaces, and the push to commodify of hobbies All affect the way the public interacts with fanworks. staying educated and vocal about what you think is right, and ways we can stop profit from being the main driver in creative works can and will help all of us get more time to write and share and read fics. (without feeling left behind) - see also: letting yourself be behind in fandom, if you publish a moving work on a piece of media that's not currently being aired it is likely that people will read it and get re-excited about it. hell I watched all of M*A*S*H (1972) and devoured whole swaths of the fanfics available because of gifs I saw on tumbr in 2020. and I probably would have started writing my own fics there, if it hadn't been for that meddling pandemic, and the seasonal depression too.

having a schedule! this one can be tricky exspeishaly on ao3 where you are not (And Should NOT) be getting any financial compensation for posting. but if you can manage to have a regular posting routine it means that people who enjoy your fics can know when to come check for them. I've only done this twice. one I had mostly written out (through the support of friends) and just decided that posting a chapter a week would be reasonable and motivating. the other time I had a strong outline and idea of what I wanted and had the luxury of working on them daily. but those remain the most commented on fics I've ever done!

nothing pisses me off more than when i see a fic on ao3 talking about reach. "this ship isn't here but i added them for reach" "this fandom tag isn't necessary but i'm adding it for reach" "reposting for reach" STOP IT!!!! this is not tiktok this is not twitter this is an ARCHIVE this is not how it works!!!
