Me when fictional characters (or things) are assigned personalised colours and symbology (it reflects who they are as a character and makes them feel and look distinct in a way that’s fun to engage with as a viewer)

#salt grain thoughts#thinking back on all the things I tend to gravitate to and noticing this#I love distinct designs meant to communicate things to the viewer#it makes communicating complex ideas in fiction easier I think#if you attach a symbol to things#(literally just basic colour theory and design tbh)#(but not everything is super effective at it which makes it more noticeable if it’s good)#(like yesss colour code that bitch)#(give me design elements to attach onto)

Hey Jitsu! I hope you're doing well. I know this has nothing to do with your art but I saw in your pinned post that you're a graphic design student. Although it's not exactly what I want to pursue, I'm going to study it next year as well. I just wanted to know how long you're studying this degree/diploma for, what modules you do and how you're finding it! Sorry if this is a little personal or if you don't want to answer. I just wanted to get some insight before making the mistake of studying something I'll regret. I don't know many people irl who do graphic design :)
P.s. I absolutely love your art. Keep going and have a good one 🫶
Hiii there! Thank you for your mail, for loving my art and I'll be really happy to answer your questions in any way I can ❤️ I had the same exact questions before I attended my university for the first time.
First off - I live in Eastern Europe, so it might differ in your country, but I did study graphic design for three years to earn my first degree. Then I worked for some time in the commercial industry but moved on and decided to take up traditional art (with specialization in comics) because of my longing for more creative activities and to earn my second degree because I simply like to study. So, it's 2 more years of attending uni for me - I work on my thesis and final project rn which annoys the shit out of me because I have little to no time for creating my own fanart stuff :(
Second - I understand your feelings pretty well because I literally NEVER aimed to work in the graphic design industry too. BUT! It doesn't really mean you shouldn't pursue this way or at least try it. I did learn tons of useful stuff, studied modules like drawing, traditional painting, sculpting, animation, 3D modelling... but they weren't really the star of the whole subject. What they taught us the most about was stuff like commercial designs (logos, headers, posters, book covers, magazines etc.), also some illustrations & UI/UX/game design. I can definitely say you get to learn many softwares which is really useful, both for work and for your personal projects.
So, it depends what you're looking for tbh. You might get slightly disappointed because yes, they will teach you some straight up art stuff, but not too much, just basics to get a grasp of them and to be able to use them in the graphic design field - it is unless you get to choose your modules like concept art or digital painting specificially, but I didn't have such possibilities sadly.
So why did I study it? To secure my future I'd say, because they pay pretty well in the industry. It was a good start to my artistic adventure tool, and it made me yearn for more knowledge in terms of drawing and digital art - I was never the talented sort of kid so it helped me get through the first stages of learning things like colour theory or basic composition rules.
And why didn't I keep working in the industry? Because I just felt like it kinda drained off and worsened my creative side after some time. It had become a burden to just do one logo after another, then make some social media graphics or menus for restaurants. I wanted to draw stuff, colour it my way, and I wanted people to like the way I create without customers dictate me each and every detail of the commercials I had to obey and follow.
So, to sum it all up - I think you should try, it might develop your artistic side and it's always good to get to know various fields of artistic work and then focus on one or two things.
I hope I was able to help you in any way, I'm sorry if it's not clear enough because of my messy English D: I hope you enjoy your uni time next year!

if you had to rank the designs of the countries (lets just say axis and allies + whichever ones you'd like to keep it simple), what would you rank them and why? (this can be based on creativity, how much it aligns with their character/country, or just general aesthetic appeal)
here we go again + prussia roasting
a thing i will mention though is that i think most of the designs are just simple
Italy: 7/10
His design is like 50/50 for me and i have no idea why. It does show that he just has less of a boring colour to his personality than the rest of the axis. I really want that man to have curly or wavy hair though-
Germany: 8/10
On first glance, that is a complete stereotypical german man, no question. Even his behaviour of being strict and percise. I asked my family member and they recognised it's germany right away
Japan: 9/10
Also very stereotypical tbh. Unlike Germany though, from the first look i feel like i could just vibe with him in a calm manner, which is a yes for me. He's just a shy nerd, that would spend days in his room if he could.
America: 10/10
i adore his design a lot! It's mostly the ww2 US bomber jacket he has. It's also obvious that he's America from inspecting the jacket, which is a nice ''check out this'' From the first look, this dude goes to parties every weekend. Just the smile and the eyebrows being slightly narrow.. i do love the extrovert energy
England: ?/10
it depends on which style am i looking at (not speaking about manga atm). I liked the first season style more for this man. He looked more manly and oldish, unlike now, where he's just a twink. Sure, he might have looked bland in the old artstyle, but he is bland...Engbland.
France: 10000/10
what can i say, this fuck is literally keeping me in this fandom. His design is absolutely fabulous and fancy. Colourful personality and iterests, just like his classical uniform.
Russia: 9/10
He does give off the Russian vibe, his uniform has that extra fancy and the scarf was a nice representation of the cold part of Russia! He doesn't give off the vibe he could kill you at first, just a sweet baby boy
Although idk why his heart falls out sometimes?
China: 8/10
I do like his design a lot, both in green uniform and classical red outfit. They're very creative and pretty fancy. What i'm not a big fan off, and i mentioned this in the nyo one, is that i don't really like too cutesy characters (even if it might be a joke about how he's 4000, but never got old). Especially with China, where he's easily concidered a female. It's just my opinion, but other than that, love him.
Prussia: 3/10
This HOE looks like he just came from a chemical romance and one direction concerts. I just don't like him and it's because of the ANGRY BROWS. Like i saw pictures of him with normal eyebrows and that's a whole different man.
His colour scheme brings out a lot of theories though. It's either, 1. he's an albino 2. he's basically dead, so his colours aren't that shiny or 3. Hima just really wanted to draw the classical anime character with white hair and red eyes.
#ask#i was lowkey part of a courtroom session where i was part of ''france is much hotter than england'' defense team

Hello again
Because we proceed to the next episode
RWBY Volume 7 Chapter 3 Review
1. The Music. Beautiful, Perfect, Spectacular, Amazing, Breath-Taking-
2. Is it some sort of dust in Jaune’s shield??? The purple one? It seems similar to one they need to get for the Amity Tower.
3. “It’s freezing out here!”
Yes, Ruby, it is definitely freezing, maybe you should have had a jacket as well- excuse me being salty, I actually like all new outfits. I wonder now how to braid Weiss’s braid because it looks really cool and I love braiding hair.
Also, I feel like “cold of Solitas” may play some role in the future. Maybe. We don’t know yet for how long we stay in Atlas and how much we will explore the surroundings. Who knows.
4. I know people were discussing Qrow’s new outfit and all the small details and I just want to say that he is wearing a ring on the pointing finger, right? Technically, this attracts bad luck :’D at least I know there is a superstition about it. I also know how people were making connections about the design of the pattern on his shirt to the design on Ozpin’s cane and Ironwood’s guns and I have a cute little headcanon about it. But, tbh, the way his colours match the colours of Ozpin’s cane actually made me feel sad. I think it is not a reference to Ozpin in general, but to the fact that Qrow somehow sees himself as a (Ozpin’s) weapon, not as a person. After all, he had a very strategic role in Ozpin’s scheme of things. This really made me feel concerned for him.
Let him be happy please?
5. Blake being supportive and caring mom-friend for past episodes. Bromance-Monochrome moments literally show the world out there what true friendship is, what support and understanding means. Blake is there for Weiss, and it makes me remember the dialogue between Yang and Weiss back in vol 5. I love it, this is gorgeous, thank you for the great job and great Blake this volume.
6. The fighting part with Marrow is just crazy. Puns? Checked. Cool weapon? Checked. Coordination with the teammate? Checked. Puns? Double checked.
7. Let’s talk about Clover a bit. First of all, I think he knows extremely well how to control his semblance and may actually “summon” it when necessary (he did touch that clover sign on purpose). He is not incredibly lucky all the time, he’s like from 25% to 100% more lucky than other average people. He is just an optimistic person with an advantage he mostly uses when necessary. His luck, though, might have made him a little bit less cautious than he should be. I get a feeling that sometimes his self-confidence outweighs his cold-mindedness. it happens very rarely though.
Qrow, on the contrary, seems to live in a constant battle with his semblance. He confesses that “sometimes [he] cannot control it”, so I make a conclusion that semblances of such type are very strong by nature and require certain level of self-control from the owner. However, knowing his own weaknesses, he is guarded as hell all the time, basically combat-ready any moment (physically or mentally). I feel like sometimes he might push his semblance down to the point it starts pushing back until it gets out of control (natural resistance).
I believe that Qrow and Clover working together and basically just casually being together on daily basis and doing some ordinary daily-life stuff will be useful for both of them, especially Qrow. I think Clover might teach him new ways to control his semblance. If this happens and if my theory with Clover “activating+navigating” his semblance through an object proves correct, then Qrow’s “unlucky” way to wear a ring becomes crystal clear, as he will be able to “navigate+activate” his semblance through a Bad Luck Charm (yes, it is a straight reference right here, I am not even trying to be witty about it). (It will be like the Mjolnir to Thor, if you’ve seen Ragnarök movie.) And Clover, from interactions with Qrow, I believe may learn to be more cautious about the limits of his semblance (especially when Qrow is around).
But, in general, I believe their interaction will result in at least a healthy comradeship and mutual skill growth. (And yes I am generally happy about Qrow socializing thank you.)
On other points about Oscar, Ozpin, communication between the characters, Ruby, truth and Ironwood I, again, have nothing to add so far, even though they are really important.
That’s it for now, thank you all for coming to my TEDx Talk! Stay healthy be positive share love ✨❤️✨
