WHERE: Paranormal Beans & Comics WHO: @matthewbaudelaire & @duderosiers
Just a couple hours before noon, before Roman stirred awake from his slumber.  The oncoming headache caused him to groan, why did he have to kill that cheap bottle of whiskey last night?  Still, he pushed forward knowing today was an important chapter in his life.  A day that could set the standard between Matthew and himself.  Perhaps, if things went well it meant he could finally have that relationship he longed for all these years.  Or it could do the opposite and completely turn Matthew away from him, the odds currently were 50/50.
Roman was hoping to strengthen his odds as he stepped in the shower and cleaned off the stench of the auto shop, whiskey and who knows what other stenches clinging to him.  Once out, he stared at himself and began grooming himself.  It had been awhile since he trimmed his beard and today he had real reason to groom himself, truth be told it had been awhile since he cared to put in any effort in his appearance.  Hell, he even got out the nice underwear that didn’t have holes in it.  Although it was casual, Matthew didn’t really give Roman much to go off, besides where to meet and what time.  So, he decided to dress nice and not in his usual jeans and white tank top.  Instead, he got out some black slacks, nice leather shoes hidden in his closet and a nice button up shirt.  Only problem, the clothes practically swallowed his thin stature, strange what less than two years could do to someone.  But, any of his other nice clothes would do the same so he decided to go with it.  Maybe, it would be a point in his favor that he at least attempted to put in effort.
Call it military training, always needing to show up at least fifteen minutes early.  After all, if you’re not early, you’re late.  A motto drilled into the wolf when he signed his life way to the government all those years ago.  In his truck, he looked into the mirror to check himself once more.  You can do this.  In reality, he was not exactly sure if those words rang true.  The man pulled out his wallet and then lifted his wife’s picture from its spot to stare at the beautiful woman for a couple minutes.  “Corey says our son is happy,” he softly spoke to the photo, his eyes starting to water.  “I don’t believe in a lot, but I do believe in you.  Give me strength.”  Sure, it was just a picture of the woman he loved all these years from when they first got married, but she was the closest thing to G-d he ever knew.
Before he exited the truck, he reached down and pulled out his flask and took two swigs so his nerves would calm and his hands wouldn’t be shaking at the table.  And just like many like him, he kept a small bottle of mouthwash in his truck to mask the scent of whiskey on his breath.  “Alright, you got this.”  Another few words of encouragement as he exited his truck and headed inside.  When he entered, he didn’t see Matthew and checked down at his phone to see he still had some time to spare.  His dark eyes scanned the place, the area was fairly open.  Most likely the reason his eldest chose this place.  Somewhere where he would not cause a scene, somewhere very public.  Finding the furthest table from the entrance, he sat with his back against the wall…another military training stuck in his mind as he waited patiently

WHO: @duderosiers LOCATION: Pawnland
Hopping around different countries came with a downside, it meant the letters she received from her sire often went unread for weeks at a time until she circled back home and found her mailbox filled with handwritten letters.  It never failed, Jean Claude always brought a sense of wonderment and love in his letters and every time she received one, it was a reminder she was no longer alone in this world.  The two of them made a family together in all the chaos around them.
The last letter though, it crushed her.  Images of danger and fear rattling in her mind.  All of this happened on Halloween and she was just getting to this letter now at the end of November.  Well, that was it. Too much time has passed since she saw her brother, although the two remained in touch this no longer was working for them.  It was time to go and be there for him, help pick up the pieces and show him a good time.
Of course the young vampire did not call or even hint towards her maker that she was coming to Greywood, no she figured a surprise was in order.
Originally, she was going to stop by his place but that would be too on the nose.  Instead, she ended up at Pawnland strolling around the store and picking up a random object to take it towards the counter hoping he had yet to see her.  “How much are you charging for this?”  She called out, waiting for him to make an appearance.

LOCATION: Erzsebet’s WHO: @duderosiers
Stepping inside Erzsebet’s, Tony spun around as he moved to the beat of his own drum singing Spice Girls to himself as he went to find Bella.  A few judgemental eyes landed on him, giving that slight eye roll wondering when exactly Tony planned on growing up.  Often, Tony could be found in these parts because he happened to be a regular blood donor for the blonde vampire.  Yet, since she got a boyfriend his services were not required as much since she fed on Nicholas when she could instead of him.  Apparently Bella had stepped out for the day, leaving Tony to his own devices.  Today was his day off from the country club and to make matters worse, he had money burning a hole in his pocket.  Just as he was about to head out to find some mischief, he noticed JC.  The two have talked before, but usually very briefly but the French vampire had always sparked Tony’s childlike curiosity.
With other vampires feeding on the donors all around, Tony danced up towards JC and then plopped down next to him offering the biggest grin.  The human had little concern when it came to personal space and leaned in towards the vampire as he batted his eyelashes at the vampire.  “You look fancy today,” he said, still smiling as he went even closer until his head was pressing lightly against JC’s shoulder.  “What are you up to JC?  Are you just hanging out?  I wanted to see Bella, but she is busy today.  So, now I’m just here not sure what to do.  I thought about going to the arcade or buying some weed.  But I dunno.”  He rambled on, just talking to hear his own voice.

France playlist
Tumblr media
When in France, I wear no pants!
This is my French playlist. It’s one that I am very proud of. It took me several months of researching, listening, finding, playing records to gather over 400 songs. But, France. What a country! This playlist could go as far as 500 songs.
Hit play: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL-iHPcxymC1-CHRTel_bBjdT_DAHLrnvX
There is an endless amount of talent from this part of the world. From across many decades the songs just keep coming. Incredible. Une région tellement incroyable pour la musique. Here is a list I created. It took me many months to compile.

003. GET UP CLOSE & PERSONAL
HEIGHT: 5′8″ or 177 cm. WEIGHT: between 121 lbs or 55 kg and 130 lbs or 59 kg. BODY BUILD: she has a banana ( otherwise known as rectangle ) shaped body which, all in all, means she has a rather slim figure or, what would be deemed by some as, the classic supermodel-like look. naturally, it’s easy for her to maintain her desired weight and her flat stomach. indigo has slim shoulders and hips, and thanks to her workout routine, she has toned legs and a more toned bum. she has a small bust — she’s a 32B — and despite being considered petite, she still has some adequate curves. EYE COLOR: her eyes are a dark shade of brown, at first glance. if you pay close attention, you’ll notice how while her right eye is brown, her left eye is black. this becomes more prominent when sun or light are directly lighting up her eyes. EYESIGHT: due to her job and how long she spends on a laptop, as well as reading different articles and books, indigo has eye fatigue and, often, gets blurry vision. in those cases, she wears glasses to help her and so she doesn’t get a headache of any sorts. on the regular, however, she doesn’t wear glasses or contacts. HAIR COLOR & STYLE: naturally, her hair is a dark shade of brown, almost black. currently, it’s dyed in a chocolate brown shade. within indigo’s line of work, appearance is easily one of the most important things and what people base their first impression of you on. alongside her fashion choices, posture and makeup, her hair happens to be a pivotal thing for the girl. in its natural state, indigo’s hair is wavy and, often, that’s how she prefers to wear it — of course, most times she uses the right products and equipment to give it some help and loosen the waves. if she’s looking for a casual, distressed look, she enjoys going for the beach waves or throw her long locks in a messy bun, but for events or other important occasions, indigo tends to go for a sleek high ponytail or sleek straight hair. DOMINANT HAND: left. NOTABLE PHYSICAL TRAITS: the most notable and distinguishable of her physical traits is the color of her eyes — while her left eye is black, her right one is a lighter, coppery-brown shade. her model-like body and, often referred as, towering height are two other things that stand out, along with her long, toned legs. additionally, her long, silky hair that is always kept in perfect condition is another one of her notable physical traits. SCARS AND MARKS: there’s a small scar above her belly button due to a surgery she was submitted to when she was born but, other than that, she doesn’t have any other noticeable scars. scattered through her body, indigo has some freckles. she has a birthmark on her right foot and another one on the small of her back. TATTOOS: on the inside of her left wrist, she has a small camera — reference. in small, cursive font placed inside her right arm, indigo has the lyrics satisfaction feels like a distant memory. on the side of her left ankle, she has a feather tattoo — reference. along her left hip, she has the lyrics kissing to cut through the gloom in small, handwritten font. indigo has a hanger tattoo — reference — on the side of her left arm, nearing her wrist and she has a small world map inside her right wrist — reference — and a eiffel tower tattoo right next to it — reference. a little above the junction of her lower and upper left arm, she has the quote be yourself first in cursive font — reference — and on the side of her right ankle, she has three small birds — reference. she has cote d’azure tattooed in small font, on the left side of her rib cage. she has a matching tattoo with alana, a flame on her right hip — reference. on her ribcage, below her left boob, she has the lyrics pour dire la vérité, je te veux just toi — dvsn’s the line’s lyrics, meaning to tell the truth, i only want you — a subtle tattoo she has gotten for will. beside it, she has an eleven — reference — tattooed in cursive font, her boyfriend’s shirt number. PIERCINGS: she has her regular lobes pierced and two tragus piercings on her left ear. VOICECLAIM: shay mitchell. ACCENT & INTENSITY: when she says certain words, you can hear her subtle marseille accent underlying what is, otherwise, a new york accent. likewise, if she’s angry or if she has returned home after spending some time in france, her marseille accent becomes more prominent. in general, however, her french accent isn’t particularly strong anymore and, more often than not, the new york one overpowers it. ALLERGIES: cats and hayfever PHOBIAS & FEARS: snakes, being forgotten and trypophobia. MENTAL & PHYSICAL ILLNESSES: she has rhinitis. ALCOHOL USE: she drinks on social situations and she doesn’t say no to a glass of rosé after a long, stressful day of work.

Amused by the situation, Bailey instantly felt the shift of the werewolf.  The heat rising in his temperature and sounds of his heart pounding furiously against his chest ringing in her ears.  Perhaps, she should have eased back and gave the poor guy a breather, but she tended to test her boundaries with people just for the sake of fun.  “Is this your first time?”  Now, she may have felt somewhat guilty if she found out that she would be his first vampire bite.  Especially since she was like a car with her prey, teasing and playing with it before devouring.
At his sweetness, she smiled.  Lifting her hand up, she ran her fingers through his hair and eased his eyes back on her.  “I like,” she paused as she started to truly gauge the situation and how he was handling it.  Bailey was coming on strong, it was in her nature.  “I like different places and positions,” she smirked.  “But you seem somewhat inexperienced.”  Then she leaned in and kissed at his neck to feel the pulse against her lips.  “I prefer the inner thigh,” she murmured in his ear.  “But, I think maybe you might prefer the neck.”

She had sat herself on his lap and the unexpected proximity sent alarm bells blaring off in his head. Undoubtedly, she'd be able to detect the quick rise of temperature in his body, the rush of blood, the racing of his heart, the sweat in his palms that he tried to subtly rub against the side of the lounge chair since he couldn't rub them dry on his jeans because she was sat there. Her fragrance invaded his senses as did the smell of suspended rot that accompanied all vampires and dead beings. The overwhelming sensation of everything that she was made it difficult for him to focus at all on what she was saying until she'd settled her hand down to the inside of his thigh.
The expression on his face turned dark from his shock at the touch, so close, she was so close, his thoughts raced almost as fast as his heart. If he was a werewolf with less impulse control he might have shifted right in that moment but while he did not, he couldn't stop the way his jaw muscles tightened to a sharp point of severity. Was this how it always was? "U-u-u-mmm..." his teeth felt like they were on the verge of shattering at how hard he was grinding down on them, "I-I-I d-d-d-don't k-k-know..." he said again, struggling. He turned his face away from her, avoiding looking at her face, she was so bold and he was a mess. Inwardly he cursed at himself and his inability to just be normal.

"W-wh-wh-where d-d-d-d-do," he inhaled, tried to regain some semblance of control over himself and his heart beat, "d-d-d-do y-y-ou l-l-l-like?"

asked
“If it's okay to send things late - arrogantshipping for 001 :)”
I just finished writing a big segment of Arrogant, so with that fresh in my mind, and to help flesh out more, here we go! I also took the liberty to really ramble here, since it’s a semi-rare ship, and it’s been the most challenging side to writing this Ettu thing. ^.~ So thanks! When I started shipping it if I did: Individually, I think I fell in love with Mai first? She was an instant fave on principles evident in her very design for a “boy’s” game show, but we did not yet know if she would be a recurring character at all. Kaiba, I initially assumed we were supposed to hate this evil and probably secretly even more evil bad guy, and support the sole “main character.” But... then we saw him hack Pegasus’ system to make the MC win? It felt like it happened slowly at the time, but the rescue-my-brother angle stole my heart, forever. Any character insinuating that his mission was anything but the most noble and wholesome thing made me overprotective. Mai was also knocked for being practical and having expensive taste, and it’s easy to see how guys would resent her after she took advantage of them thinking she was an easy target -- but I loved all that about her! Throughout Face Off (Kaiba vs Yugi/Yami atop the castle), Tea was especially pissing me off for glorifying Yugi’s equally loving mission, and blindly vilifying any reason Kaiba could possibly have. Her speech to Kaiba when it ended really did her in for me. And then I got to see Mai kick her butt - but surrender to take the high road. She wanted to give those star chips back to Yugi all along. She just couldn’t stand Tea getting all mushy and high-horsed about it all. So, nice! Also proves that throughout BOTH these duels, Tea was completely clueless as to what was going on under the surface. Naturally, I tried to figure out how to get my 2 faves together... Technically my first ship, or at least almost? My thoughts: Independent girl with expensive taste + independent boy with all money, smart enough to not underestimate her as a woman? Well, he thinks he’s better than everyone, & he’d still win against her, but it wouldn’t be a sexist thing. Just personal ego, personal skill, fate, destiny, etc. Problem is - they’re both TOO independent and TOO egotistical that it’s difficult to not have them just repel each other! Yet it’s not like how Mai turned down Jeane-Claude? He was a chauvinist, unrelenting in trying to lock her into a marriage against her will, and sexually harassing her, not to mention kidnapping. Even at Kaiba’s worst, he’s never shown me anything like that- besides the past kidnapping lol. There are qualities in Kaiba’s character she would appreciate & relationship needs he would fulfill well, and vice versa-- (what pushes me to Ettu is that it’s still hard to see how they can fulfill all of each others’ heart’s desires. Enter Joey.) Basically, it’s not about the money. But, not worrying about money takes a big load of stress off their minds & hearts. What makes me happy about them: Kaiba has no emotional connection to his money; it’s merely a tool. He needs the power to stay in control due to his own worries and mental state, but sometimes he still seems to understand what it’s like to have nothing. Money isn’t his god; it’s just how he keeps control to protect what little he does care most about: Mokuba, and his dreams to build theme parks for other little kids. To a certain extent, Yugi & Joey. And, occasionally, the world still existing and not being ruled by absolute evil.  Mai, on the other hand, seems to have been born wealthy, and is trying to get back to that level??? It’s always made me wonder what happened between her & her parents/family. I’ve never really seen it explained.  They mutually understand the appeal of solitude, but also how feeling isolated hurts. They’re both ambitious and emotionally unstable, craving to finally obtain control over their lives. Give them the Kaiba fortune, add Mai to his inner circle, and they’d be an awesome power couple! They even want to give back: Kaiba wants to help other kids who were like him, and seeing as Mai directly tries to repay those star chips, I think her come-around to “friendship” would include some further altruism. What makes me sad about them: They both struggle with the concept of weakness... Kaiba, however, still has his #2 position and Kaiba Corp’s success to back up his strong image. Mai is fresh off the heels of complete breakdown. He’d need to get over his accepting of her weaknesses before they’d ever think twice about each other. Things done in fanfic that annoys me: I’ve only managed to read 2 fics recently that truly paired them up on any level, but nothing really annoyed me. As far as other people just talking about them, they don’t seem to accept the areas where, while Mai & Kaiba may agree, they are wrong. Things I look for in a fanfic: For those 2 fics, I was just looking for something short enough to digest quickly. I guess I would have to say, realistic ways they come around to each other? Those 2 didn’t get too deep as they didn’t emotionally open up to each other, but they both felt perfectly in character and realistic.  Who I’d be comfortable them ending up with, if not each other: JOEY!!! duhhh. lol, well, actually, Valon turned out to be a good guy for Mai to possibly end up with. And for Kaiba, DSoD has me feeling Prideshipping. My happily ever after for them: Power couple runs Kaiba Corp! Adoption. Getting everything they’ve ever wanted: Love, acceptance, and security. And honestly, therapy. Creating together the family life they both resent being deprived of. Who is the big spoon/little spoon: Mai’s the one to seize her need for touch, so she’d big spoon him regularly. However, if she’s in turmoil, he’ll spoon & hold her til she feels safe and grounded again.   And sex-wise, this is the one pairing where I see Kaiba as that “naughty librarian” stereotype, and Mai’s already always overtly naughty. She’s more socially adept at flirting/seduction/courtship/foreplay, but behind closed doors, they both get wild.  What is they’re favorite non-sexual activity: For once, NOT dueling. Mai’s big league, but, given Fate’s narrative in this world, I’d see them both getting frustrated with it being one-sided. Instead, it’s enjoying being big corporate hot shots and working for their creative ideas to come into fruition, and general showing off.

Dragon’s Crown would make for an amazing 80s movie, what games would you like to see on the big screen?
Let’s attain the heights of Mortal Kombat: Annihilation
[Header picture: Sorceress (1982)]
Video Sport Motion pictures. They not often work out, proper? Generally made as a fast straight-to-video cash-in, typically made with the most effective of intentions, both means they often fail ship an expertise worthy of fan expectations, or their supply materials. Alone within the Darkish, Useless or Alive, BloodRayne, Useless Rising, even Far Cry. It does not matter for those who solid Kevin Nash as Bass Armstrong, you in all probability ought to’ve simply left properly sufficient alone.
The issue right here, all issues thought of, is that Hollywood is not coming to me for concepts. ‘Cos I bought your pitch: Dragon’s Crown. Give me a few million , a mound of the white stuff, and ship me again to the early 1980’s and I will provide you with a film primarily based on Vanillaware’s RPG brawler that might’ve set the American box-office on hearth.
We’ll get in Sybil Danning as Amazon, Julian Sands as Wizard and Maggie Cheung as Elf, or the shopkeeper, or anyone (I simply need her within the film). Lately-discovered megastar Arnie can play Fighter, which can give the entire shitflick some Hollywood gloss. For the villains, we’ll rent particular results genius Tom Savini to create a horrifying roster of beasts, monsters, and demons.
Roger Corman can government produce, to ensure Dragon’s Crown wraps in two weeks, properly under-budget and lacking a ton of vitally-important scenes. Then all that is left is casting of the pivotal position of Sorceress… Hmm… I suppose I gotta give it to Cassandra Peterson, higher identified to Z-list film followers because the incomparable Elvira: Mistress of the Darkish.
Stick in a bucketful of gore and I reckon that’ll make for a fairly candy 75 minutes on the silver display, would not you agree?  Krull could be bricking it come the Summer time blockbuster season. Are you able to do higher? in fact you may. Tell us under what video video games you suppose needs to be up there on the large display. Within the meantime, listed below are some concepts from the Destructoid crew.
Anthony Marzano
Sure I do know they tried to make a film primarily based on BioShock the sport however they have been flawed proper from the beginning. The story of Jack Ryan’s return to Rapture is one that matches completely within the gaming medium as the entire “Would you kindly” twist would not work as properly if it was for a non-playable character. So you’ve got misplaced one of many largest hooks of the story on account of utilizing the flawed medium. Additionally, the great ending (which let’s be sincere could be the movie one) to BioShock was ham-fisted and ended up in a bit too neat of a bow for my liking. So what do you do with the story ripe world of Rapture? Inform the tragic story of how its creator so pushed by his ambitions may acquire a lot, then lose all of it.
Like all good films, the most effective story would come from a ebook and ever since studying the prequel ebook BioShock: Rapture it is the one model of the story I’ve wished to been seen put to display. It switches from character to character telling of how all of them got here right down to the marvelous marvel beneath the ocean after which reveals how all of them died horrible deaths as their collective hubris got here collapsing in round them. It additionally was printed earlier than BioShock: Infinite was allowed to return in and taint Rapture with its stink, so it has that going for it as properly. Would it not be a cheerful film? No, however do you actually desire a completely satisfied ending to a BioShock film? I feel not.
Chris Hovermale
I get pleasure from a superb film, however I don’t get pleasure from them almost as a lot as video games, so I actually can’t consider any recreation I’d get pleasure from extra if it have been merely tailored right into a film.  So as a substitute of considering of a conventional film, I requested myself — what would make for a terrific documentary? Generally the impression video games have on individuals’s lives could be as fascinating because the tales in video games themselves. And for all that they’ve executed to convey us collectively and tear us aside, I’m shocked there aren’t extra documentaries primarily based round occasion video games, most of all Mario Occasion.
Shockingly constant cube rolls breeding skepticism. Bowser areas wreaking havoc on everybody besides, paradoxically, the one who landed on it. Purposefully thrown minigames placing quick leashes on a “teammate’s” Star conquest. The explosive arguments. The remorseful nights on the sofa. The heartfelt apologies and reunions. Mario Occasion would make for a superb movie, not for its content material itself, however the way it molds with our family members.
Then first and final place swap stars from Likelihood Time and historical past repeats itself. They shoulda… shoulda possibly performed Mouse Lure as a substitute…
Occams Electrical Toothbrush
Rule of Rose is a darkish coming-of-age story involving a 19-year-old orphan named Jennifer as she recovers the forgotten recollections of her childhood and remembers the individuals she knew on the Rose Backyard Orphanage. Leaping forwards and backwards between reminiscence and actuality, the sport shifts into an nearly dream-like state at occasions. Thematically, this recreation offers closely in trauma. And guilt. And the evils perpetrated upon each other, particularly how women deal with one another. I’ve all the time discovered this concept fascinating and the sport did one thing with survival horror that I do not suppose has been matched.
I see the film as Lord of the Flies set in a 1930’s British orphanage starring pre-teen women. All the film, aside from a number of key flashbacks, takes place within the Rose Backyard Orphanage. It’s a twisting, darkish place. Burgundy upholstered furnishings and mahogany partitions draped in pale electrical lights that sparkle and wrestle to remain on, groaning with an audible hum as if the constructing itself was crying.  Her fellow orphans are merciless to the purpose of caricature, as Jennifer’s recollections (very similar to our personal) paint the story with such a selected brush. Earlier than she was sufficiently old to have the phrases of the reality, she created monsters to fill within the blanks. Representations of monsters and the monstrous acts she bore witness to that her younger thoughts may course of. These are the boogeymen that hang-out the orphanage.
The entire story performs out as a phantasmagoria of horror and thriller. A soundtrack heavy on cello and piano to imitate the sport’s unimaginable rating. Ti West to direct.
Jonathan Holmes
There’s quite a lot of good that may come from this week’s theme. A Dangerous Dudes film starring Jean-Claude Van Damme and Rob Van Dam the place Bam Margera performs the man who’s all the time on hearth could be good. A Tomba film the place Brendan Fraser performs Tomba and the solid of Frasier performs the Evil Pigs could be even higher.
However all issues thought of, my bets on a BurgerTime film directed by David Cage, starring Nicholas Cage as Pepper Pete, Channing Tatum because the Sizzling Canine, Debra Messing because the Fried Egg, and Michael Cera because the Pickle. Higher but, the basic BurgerTime theme music would play on loop for everything of the movie’s 140 minute run time.
As if that we’re sufficient bang to your buck, those that stick round for the post-credits scene can be handled to the sight of Karnov (performed by Roman Burtsev, the person they dubbed “The Fats Russian Leonardo DiCaprio”) coming into the fray, formally kicking off the Knowledge East Cinematic Universe.
CJ Andriessen
Some video video games lend themselves properly to the cinematic format. World of Warcraft, Tomb Raider, Murderer’s Creed, Hitman, Silent Hill; these are all gaming franchises which are completely ripe for a movie adaptation and I hope someday some studio can flip these IPs into first rate, or on the very least watchable, movies. I’d additionally hope some studio — maybe Toho, Shochiku Co., or Toei Firm – may discover a solution to fund a characteristic movie adaptation of one of many wildest, most colourful and eternally joyous video games ever created: The Fantastic 101.
For those who haven’t performed The Fantastic 101, you’re what’s flawed with the world. It’s a superhero recreation with 100 superheroes, every with their very own skills and backstories, that’s stuffed to the brim with high-quality motion set-pieces and fascinating storyline. Consider the cinematic marvel that might be seeing 100 distinct superheroes preventing in opposition to Operation 001-C. Or consider how cool the time-slowing mechanic of Surprise Black’s Unity Bomb would look on display. Hell, consider the toys and spin-off potential.
The Fantastic 101 flew beneath too many radars, locked on a console that did as properly. It was handed over and forgotten by the lots, regardless of being one of the crucial creative titles of the previous decade. If avid gamers can’t admire its brilliance, possibly moviegoers will.

BET Awards Celebrate Black Designers, Stir Calls for Fashion Change – WWD
https://pmcwwd.files.wordpress.com/2020/06/claude-kameni-001.jpg?w=640&h=415&crop=1
There wasn’t an actual red carpet, but Sunday’s virtual BET Awards was an impressive showcase of Black style nonetheless, starting with host Amanda Seales, representing all Black-designed clothing, jewelry, hair-care and makeup brands, including a custom gown by Los Angeles-based rising fashion star Claude Kameni.
“We wanted to tell a story of Black creativity, pay homage to iconic moments of Black style, and amplify the work of these Black fashion innovators,” said Seales.
“The BETs are our Oscars, our Grammys, our everything, where we are able to show ourselves and have fun and show off,” said her stylist Bryon Javar of the 13 looks, using pieces from Pyer Moss, Romeo Hunte, Sergio Hudson, Sister Love, Brother Vellies, Grayscale, Bishme Cromartie, Dapper Dan-Gucci and more, and paying homage to iconic moments in Black style history, from Hilary Banks’ Nineties power wardrobe in “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” to Janet Jackson’s fierce “Rhythm Nation” outfit. “It made sense for this moment to celebrate Black everything,” Javar said.
Seales’ regal, off-shoulder, high-slit gown was custom made by Kameni, whose Lavie by CK men’s and women’s label incorporates West African textile designs into body-enhancing gowns, sundresses, jumpsuits, blazers, shirting and soon-to-be-released swimwear. The look was a nod to the 1988 film “Coming to America.” And in a full-circle moment, Kameni will have clothing in the sequel “Coming 2 America,” due out Dec. 18, with costume direction by Ruth E. Carter.
“I really hope, as other awards shows start to come back, we will see more Black designers represented — not just when it’s convenient,” said the self-financed Kameni, 26, last week at her Hollywood home office, adding that she hopes to show her collection in New York in September, and one day sell at Nordstrom.
Alicia Keys performed in a sleek black coat, bra top and jewelry sourced from the Slauson Swap Meet, the legendary South Central L.A. style and shopping center. “It’s a look of strength and mourning with a nod to Angela Davis,” said her stylist Jason Bolden.
And sisters Chloe and Halle Bailey rocked custom sexy-sporty black vinyl and white utility looks by TLZ L’Femme, styled by Zerina Akers, who also promoted the small, experimental Black-designed L.A. label on her  All Black Everything list “to celebrate companies that might not have access to certain markets or get the visibility their products deserve.” The list was shared on her client Beyoncé’s web site on Juneteenth.
Besides serving up Hollywood’s first mega-fashion moments since the pandemic, the 20th annual BET Awards were an opportunity to reflect on what could be for inclusion in fashion and celebrity dressing if Black designers are considered as a norm, not just for the moment.

In the wake of the racial equality movement sparked by the killing of George Floyd, several initiatives have recently launched to advocate for more Black representation in fashion and support Black fashion professionals — the Black in Fashion Council spearheaded by Teen Vogue editor Lindsay Peoples Wagner and p.r. specialist Sandrine Charles, with more than 400 members; the Black Fashion and Beauty Collective for glam squads started by stylist-designer Jason Rembert and hair stylist Lacy Redway; the Kelly Initiative petitioning the Council of Fashion Designers of America to hold the industry accountable; the 15 Percent Pledge from Brother Vellies designer Aurora James asking retailers to buy more Black brands, and Akers’ All Black Everything list.
But much of the disparity comes down to economics. (BET founder Robert Johnson, for one, recently made the case for the U.S. government to pay $14 trillion in reparations for slavery.)
Without the same access to capital, Black designers have difficulty establishing and maintaining their own brands, garnering attention from legacy media titles (including WWD), and competing in the high-stakes red carpet game, which is typically dominated by luxury brands with the money to grease the wheels with payouts for managers, stylists and celebrities themselves.
“It is about investing in independent Black brands and designers. And it’s not just incumbent on Black investors. It’s incumbent on those who invest in fashion period,” said New York designer B Michael, who in 2019 became the first Black designer to dress an Oscar winner — Cicely Tyson — a fashion milestone that wasn’t covered by the mainstream fashion press.

Even when Black designers do dress celebrities for the red carpet, some say their accomplishments are overlooked.
“I designed at least four or five Oscars gowns for Samuel L. Jackson’s wife, LaTanya Richardson, and she said my name on the red carpet, but I never got the print,” said Los Angeles designer Angela Dean, who has been working since the Eighties, including a stint at Trashy Lingerie, where she created a cone bra for Madonna that preceded Jean Paul Gaultier’s but has not gotten the same recognition. In 2019, Dean cofounded the Black Design Collective to bring attention to bygone talents such as Ann Lowe, who created Jacqueline Kennedy’s wedding dress, and create opportunities for new talent.
On the red carpet, the rise of the celebrity stylist in the 2000s has been a blessing and a curse for inclusion. “When we started out, designers would dress stars, and make millions of dollars from the exposure,” said Dean. “Then it got to where brands started paying [stars], and paying the stylist to get the stars, and I wasn’t in that grid…Stylists were making $6,000 a day, they became bigger than the designers.”
“Stylists are drawn by the companies that have the economic power to attract them…the same companies that have the money to hire social media influencers,” said Michael, whose custom design house is in the process of developing a new ready-to-wear collection. “You have to have Black businesses that are successful to really create change.”
But for younger Black designers, social-media savvy stylists have been a gateway to success outside the fashion system.
“She found me by my going viral,” Kameni said of stylist Karla Welch discovering Lavie by CK via Instagram, and reaching out for a custom dress for Tracee Ellis Ross to wear while hosting the 2018 AMAs. The style is still the brand’s best-seller. (Welch did not respond to a request for comment about the label.)

“You don’t have to depend on print and advertising if you have Instagram and dress JLo, but the struggle is still there. We may get the red carpet, but we don’t get the stores or the backing. And we don’t get respect from the industry,” said L.A. designer Sergio Hudson, who had his first show in New York in February, and has dressed Jennifer Lopez, Michelle Obama, Amy Poehler and more in his sleek, modern designs. “I’m an American sportswear designer going for the same client Michael Kors and Oscar de la Renta are going for, but when you enter that genre, there is a door closed.”
Some Black creatives are bristling at the sudden industry and media attention — often showered on the same group of people. “It feels very token. The CFDA has their picks — this is the cool designer, this is the cool organization,” said Hudson. “I’m tired of the popularity contest in fashion. It’s old and dried up.”

“I have put clients in a lot of things by Black designers, but it’s never been deemed important,” echoed Bolden, who works with Yara Shahidi, Ava DuVernay and Amandla Stenberg, among others, adding that as a Black stylist, he has not gotten the same opportunities either: “I have had managers and p.r.’s say to me, ‘I thought you only styled Black people.’ My name would never drop down when they were looking for someone for Cate Blanchett,” he said. “It’s not just our problem.”
Law Roach agreed, urging his white stylist counterparts to step up to hire and nurture Black assistants, and speak out beyond hashtags about how they are going to make the fashion industry more equitable. But he also acknowledged he has been “part of the problem.”
“I have made it part of my career, and gained some recognition with Zendaya, to find and help elevate smaller brands, most recently with Christopher Esber and Peter Do,” said Roach, who was part of the high-profile, two-season Tommy x Zendaya collaboration with Tommy Hilfiger. “In hindsight what I’m ashamed of, and heartbroken about is that I didn’t focus that energy toward African-American designers. That was me not paying attention, and not working as hard at shining a light on businesses that look like me.”
Now, in true Hollywood form, the “America’s Top Model” and “Legendary” judge wants to turn shining a light on Black brands into a TV show. “I’m not busy right now!” said Roach.
