What Actually Is DĂ©jĂ  Vu? 5 Times Science Explained The Spookiest Sensations
Somewhere, in the UK, lives a 28-year-old man with a rather peculiar affliction.
As a result of his chronic anxiety, he suffers through near constant dĂ©jĂ  vu. The French phrase means ‘already seen’, and refers to that oh-so-common feeling where you’re convinced that you’ve lived the current moment before.
You’ve been here and you’ve done that already.
He’s reportedly made so uncomfortable by supposedly repeating the same things day-after-day that he avoids reading the newspaper and watching the TV. He describes it as living in a constant time loop.
It sounds like a horror film. And that’s not far off how most people feel when they experience dĂ©jĂ  vu.
Of course, for them, it’s like they’ve predicted the future or seen this all before in a mystical dream. But sometimes our spookiest feelings have the simplest explanations.
So, in honour of it being Halloween, let’s decode some of the strangest sensations believed to be induced by the supernatural and see what’s really causing them.
Tumblr media
What actually is déjà vu?
It’s an uncanny feeling, when you’re walking down a new street only to realise it doesn’t feel so new. Maybe the houses look familiar. Maybe you’ve heard the conversation of the couple passing you already.
DĂ©jĂ  vu is pretty unnerving, and always makes me think I’ve seen this moment in a dream. And if I am having a precognition, there must be a reason why! Is some tragic event about to happen in front of me? Is this a pre-destined moment that changes my fate?
Probably not.
There’s a few scientific explanations for this feeling.
There’s split perception, where you see the same sorta thing two different times. The first time you might see it out of the corner of your eye or be distracted when you're experiencing it. But your brain will take in more than you think and create a complete memory without you realising. The second time you experience a similar event, you’re not so distracted and your brain links it back to that memory.
Then there’s memory-based explanations. This is when our recognition memory is triggered by certain situations - even if they’ve never actually happened.
There’s also a dream-based explanation: you’ve probably experienced something like this in a dream, stowed it away as a memory and are reliving something just like it.
It’s difficult to research dĂ©jĂ  vu as its occurrence is spontaneous. That being said, it has been associated with mental disorders, neurological problems and different medications.
Whilst we all experience it, it’s actually more common amongst sufferers of temporal lobe epilepsy and migraines with auras. Apparently, during seizures, it’s common to experience dĂ©jĂ  vu or its sibling vibe, jamais vu.
Yes, you can also experience jamais vu (when something feels unfamiliar but is very familiar), dĂ©jĂ  entendu (when you’re pretty sure you’ve heard something before) and dĂ©jĂ  rĂȘvĂ© (when you think you’ve already dreamed of something that’s happening).
Tumblr media
The Fear Frequency
This one’s pretty cool.
Sometime in the 1980s, some engineer called Vic Tandy was working in a lab designing medical equipment. But soon the studious work environment shifted to one of fear and anxiety: lab technicians began to report that it was haunted.
Tandy didn’t think much of it. As a scientist, he was used to brushing off such claims. But then, working late one night, he began to experience something he thought was paranormal activity. His hair stood on end. He began to sweat. He felt as if he was being watched and grew more and more uncomfortable.
And then, out of the shadows, it appeared.
A grey shape shifted into his line of sight before vanishing into thin air.
He scuttled home in terror. The next day, he returned with trepidation. But he soon discovered something else odd: a fail blade in a vice was vibrating. What was making it vibrate?
It was a sound wave coming from an extractor fan. It was pitched at 19hz which is just below the human range of hearing. So we can’t hear it, but our bodies still vibrate without us knowing.
Our vision blurs. We get dizzy. We hyperventilate and experience serious discomfort. The infrasound, as it’s also known, generates just enough confusion to cause a haunting.
Electromagnetic Fields And Hypersensitivity
Electromagnetic fields are fields created by electric charges. Fluctuations within the field can cause strange smells or the feeling of being dizzy - things associated with haunted locations.
Scientists have attempted to prove haunted locations are actually just the result of EMFs, but it has so far created mixed results.
That being said, some people believe firmly that EMFs cause strange and sickening problems for humans. Electromagnetic hypersensitivity is the alleged sensitivity to electromagnetic fields. It results in a range of symptoms like headaches, fatigue, burning sensations and other health problems. It is reportedly brought on by close contact to electric fields and magnetic fields, like WiFi and mobile phones.
Okay, fine. This isn’t scientifically proven as a real illness. There’s no way to diagnose it and certainly no basis in science. On notable occasion, some residents in South African claimed they had EHS symptoms as a result of a cell tower near their homes. It was then revealed that the tower had been switched off six weeks prior to the claims.
Tumblr media
Carbon Monoxide Poisoning
This one’s important. If you think you’re experiencing paranormal activity, make sure you have a working carbon monoxide detector on hand. If you don’t think you’re experiencing paranormal activity but you don’t have a detector, get one. Most investigators will make this a priority, as poisoning can be lethal and explain a lot of alleged hauntings.
Carbon monoxide is a poisonous, tasteless and odourless gas. When you breathe it in, it can make you feel unwell. If you breathe in too much, you’ll die. Every year, there’s approx. 60 deaths in the UK due to carbon monoxide poisoning.
When you inhale it, it attaches itself to the hemoglobin in your cells. That’s what oxygen normally uses to get around the body. So, when it’s replaced with CO, you get less oxygen around the body. And eventually, your cells and tissues will die.
The symptoms of poisoning include dizziness, confusion, tiredness and difficulty breathing. This often translates to the feeling of pressure on the chest. Team that up with memory-loss, and you’ve got the perfect setup for an alleged haunting.
Maybe you’ll forget where you put something and be convinced *something* moved it? Perhaps you’ll feel an oppressive presence trying to strangle you?
In one famous Reddit post, a user expressed his concerns after he found post-it notes with an unknown person’s writing across his apartment. He was convinced someone was breaking in and didn’t know what to do.
It was when one user responded to the post and asked if he had a CO detector that the narrative changed. He had been writing himself post-its - and had just forgotten about them.
Sleep Paralysis
In most haunted house films - after the first hints of a poltergeist emerge - a character will wake up in the middle of the night with a start. Maybe they’ll hear a weird noise. Maybe they’ll feel the duvet pulled off the bed.
And then, they’ll see something emerge from the darkness. They’ll try to move. They’ll try to scream. But alas, they are pinned down by the beast!
Unfortunately, sleep paralysis is a common experience that conjures up a horror film scene. We think that a lot of the ghosts reportedly seen when someone is in bed are down to sleep paralysis as the hallucinations are very realistic.
Sleep paralysis occurs when the body alternates between REM (rapid eye movement) and NREM (non-rapid eye movement) sleep. During the former stage, our muscles basically switch off. But when we wake up before the cycle is complete, we are paralysed.

Miracles manifested not in holy light, but in a woman garbed in rose and ribbons. A "human" who had defied Death himself: the god of mortal demise made redundant in his visit. ❛ I saw it. The timeline where you perished. ❜ Yozora nonetheless challenged, dark mantle ripping despite the lack of disturbance in midnight air. Frost departed divine lips with his interrogation. ❛ How are you still alive? ❜
jamais vu ( ‘never seen’ ): the phenomenon of experiencing a situation that one recognizes in some fashion, but that nonetheless seems novel and unfamiliar.
the metropolis she had once called home was now only a shadow of its former self: deserted and left in an ever-growing state of decay due to many of its former citizens having settled elsewhere. slowly but surely people were beginning to pick up the pieces in their broken lives and take steps towards healing ⎯⎯ whether it was through starting a new life in edge or simply going as far as their feet were willing to take them. everyone was managing to move on...except for her. it had been over a year since meteorfall. she had traveled the world, nearly died, and saved it in the span of a few weeks and yet...she felt like she was exactly where she had started. ‘ follow them. the yellow flowers. ’ those words had once been uttered by the planet in guidance, a sign that her fate was bigger than selling flowers on the streets of midgar. a year later, however, she found herself drawn back to the old, dilapidated church in sector five where the yellow flowers grew.
aeris gainsborough, quite literally, was being held back by the past.
the situation was confusing as equally as it was annoying but she still kept returning despite her own frustration and uncertainty. she tended to flowers that she knew deep down didn’t need tending to anymore; they would continue to thrive with or without her presence. she kept talking to them during her visits and got no answers in response just as she had back when she was just a teenager. she kept waiting for something ( or was it someone ) that seemed adamant on wasting her time and not arriving as promptly as it should. what was she even waiting for? why was she even waiting? did she even know? ( the answer was no ). days grew into weeks, weeks blossomed into months, and for the first time in her twenty-four years of living, aeris experienced the natural passing of seasons. she nearly cried tears of joy when her vegetables had begun to sprout in the spring, she chopped off her hair in the summer due to the hellish heat, she quietly mourned the dead, fallen leaves in the fall, and she retreated inside in more ways than one in the winter.
the seasons changed yet her feelings remained the same. she felt stuck.
it was difficult waiting, yearning, for something that felt so out of reach so she had decided to stop waiting. she hadn’t visited the church in weeks, determined to ignore the pull towards it...at least until tonight. the choir of voices in her head had been what awoke her, their voices uttering one demand: go. aeris knew what they were referring to but she, however, really, really did not want to do that. it was cold. it was one in the morning. most importantly, it was cold. she laid there for a few minutes, face first in her pillow before pushing herself off her bed with a tired sigh so that she could go do what was expected of her ⎯⎯ even if she complained to herself during the entire trek there. once she was finally upon the familiar steps of the church, aeris couldn’t help but slightly hesitate. how many times had she walked through those doors and found nothing? what would be waiting beyond them now? after nervously breathing in the winter air, gloved hands planted themselves against one of the doors and pushed it open.
if this moment was meant to be when everything would finally click ⎯⎯ it didn’t happen.
the one she had been waiting for had been standing in front of her flowerbed, his gaze turning to meet hers as she stepped through the door. he either wasn’t one for formalities or he simply assumed she knew who he was since he didn’t hesitate to jump straight to why he was here. nearly everything about him, from his words to his tone, dripped with too much familiarity for her to be a stranger to him. he sounded...almost annoyed by their situation, as if her daring to die had somehow managed to be an inconvenience to him. this should’ve been the part where she gave a witty retort about how he had kept her waiting or where she pettily told him she didn’t know what he was talking about ( which technically was the truth ). instead, there was nothing but silence while aeris stood there and blankly stared at him, the reality of the situation slowly dawning on her.
                                       ❛ i don’t know you. ’
it was a simple, yet equally earth-shattering revelation said in the faintest whisper. the cetra could feel her hand slip away from the door, it slamming shut behind her just as her knees gave out; it felt as if her body was slowly shutting down to compensate for her pouring all of her energy into desperately trying to place a name, a memory, anything at all to a face she knew she should recognize but for the life of her could not. the stranger, apparently as quick as he was blunt, was there by her side in an instant, catching her by her arms before she could hit the ground entirely. there was an awkward yet surprisingly gentle way in which he handled her, carefully lowering her onto the floor while she fought the urge to push him away. she didn’t know who this man was. the realization was deafening, nearly paralyzing the woman as she clutched her chest in pain as she repeated the same words over and over again as if in a trance: i don’t know you. i don’t know you. i don’t know you.
Tumblr media
it feels as if whatever spell she’s been under for has finally been broken; her disillusion growing now that she could see clearly at last. aeris had waited in this church countless times, secretly hoping that this would be the day where the void in heart would fill. that maybe, just maybe, the planet would reward her with something more than just a scar, nightmares, and bouts of depression after everything she had done. she had hoped that she would be able to return home to edge, look at her friends and not feel a wave of jealously, bitterness, and then waves of guilt afterwards. she had hoped she wouldn’t be alone anymore; that maybe whatever, or whoever, she was waiting for would be able to understand her just as she would be able to understand them. had she been hoping for something impossible all this time?
the stranger had finally begun to speak again, although whatever he said was completely lost to her while in this daze. it’s through staring at him directly that she comes to understand exactly why everything hurts so much: he’s the source. she doesn’t even know who he is yet she knows that he is the cause of the void that has been in her heart for so long, the emptiness that’s been weighing her down, the loneliness she can never find herself able to shake. as she sits here, crying in front of a stranger in the middle of the night, aeris couldn’t help but wonder what part of her was shedding tears right now: the woman that had supposedly died or the woman who was sitting here alive and well? was it both? did it even matter? ( it didn’t ). emerald eyes, a near perfect reflection of the lifestream itself, slowly moved towards the flower bed ahead of them and one question ran through her mind,
                                    why make me experience this?
the flowers were silent, saying nothing in return ⎯⎯ just as they always did.

MotS: Persona Lyrical Analysis
Ok. So, it’s no secret that this comeback is largely (if not entirely) addressed to ARMY. There are different ways to interpret each song, but they intersperse familiar metaphors in their lyrics to draw attention to this focus on Army:
“With the wings of Icarus you gave me, not toward the sun but towards you, let me fly.” -Boy with Luv.
Tumblr media
Wings is both a reference to their past album and to the fame and success their fans have given them, allowing them to reach farther and higher places.
Mikrokosmos
I was on the right track when I said Mikrokosmos would use the ancient philosophical notion that each person is their own “mikrokosmos,” a small universe unto themselves. RM, the philosopher king, lays this out nicely in his verse:
“One history in one person. One star in one person. 7 billion different worlds, shining with 7 billion lights.” -Mikrokosmos
What I didn’t expect was the added layer of imagery of each person being a shining star and the emphasis on them lighting up the night.
Suga’s verse, “7 billion lives, the city’s night view is possibly another city’s night,” makes me picture this:
Tumblr media
Here, every individual Army literally looks like a star in the night sky. It makes me think of how each city on their tours must look like their own night sky created just for BTS.
“City lights, this city’s star, I remember the night sky I saw when I was young where people are light, where people are stars. in this place full of where people are lights, people are lights. We shinin’.” -Mikrokosmos
There’s this sense of reciprocity. Army shines for BTS and they shine in return, and there’s comfort in that connectivity.
The album also addresses their insane level of fame and the alienation that can bring. For this, they call back the imagery of the desert and the sea they introduced with the hidden track, Sea off of LY: Her.
“Across the desert and the sea, this wide wide world, I was wandering.” -Make it Right
“I’m thirsty wandering this desert without you, so hurry and grab me quickly, I know the sea without you is the same as a desert.” -Make it Right
The solution to the desert and the alienation seems again to be that connection with Army, but there’s a tension in the song. Why is there a need to “make it right” if that connection was never broken? What happened and what has changed? There’s an insecurity in the relationship that never quite goes away.
“In this excitement that's driving me crazy, I wasn't even able to greet you (yeah, right). Yeah I’m going out baby. The whole world is my home.” -HOME
Everything’s grown to such a huge scale, and it’s exciting, but in the excitement it’s harder to connect with the fanbase.
“Whatever I fill becomes emptier. The more we're together, I feel lonelier.” -HOME
This line made me so sad. Even as BTS repeatedly calls Army their “home,” in some sense it’s not enough. The hole just keeps getting bigger the more they try to fill it.
I’m going to skip over Jamais Vu, but I see similar themes in it and a connection to Daydream in J-Hope’s verse.
Dionysus
I love love what they did in the lyrics of Dionysus. At first glance it comes across as a hardcore party song fitting for the God of wine. But pretty quickly into the song RM tells us what it’s really about:
“Art splashing inside this clear crystal cup. Art is alcohol too, if you drink it, you'll get drunk fool.” -Dionysus
This song isn’t about alcohol, it’s about art and their fame. At the end of this album they’ve decided to fully indulge in the excitement and revelry that is their current level of fame and success, and they invite Army to join them. It’s a full Bacchic frenzy the whole song through, which is encouraged by the uptempo beat. (Bacchus is the Roman name for Dionysus).
Tumblr media
I love that they compared Dionysus’s thyrsos (staff covered in ivy and Dionysus’s symbol) to their mics (″my mic made of ivy and rough wood”). And I love that they used the myth about Dionysus’s birth to describe their own rebirth as international artists.
If you’re unfamiliar with the myth of Dionysus, there are a couple of different versions, but he’s described as “twice-born.” In one version his mother is killed before he can be born, so Zeus, his father, sews fetus Dionysus into his thigh until he is reborn a few days later.
So it seems like they’re really trying to reinvent themselves with this album, have a rebirth as artists, while reconnecting with their music and their fans.
Everything almost seems to end on a positive note. Just drink more and get drunk on it! Except there’s an insatiableness to the drinking:
“Toast to this, one shot, but I‘m still thirsty” -Dionysus
And as enticing and intoxicating as Bacchic revels can be, they’re also wild and dangerous (just read Euripides’ Bacchae if you don’t believe me).
Those are overall my thoughts on the new mini album, though honestly I could have written a lot more. There’s just SO much. I’m interested to see where they take it from here. What will be the aftermath of the party in Dionysus?

Let's talk about ipseity!
Ipseity is the sense of having a minimal self, which is essentially a feeling of mine-ness to one's thoughts. It is different from the narrative self, or identity. Thought ipseity is non-reflective--that is, you don't have to think about a thought or experience you're having to know that you're the one having it. For most people, that is. However, for those with schizo-spectrum disorders (like moi), this ipseity is often disturbed, called self-disorder. There's a number of ways one can feel distanced from one's thoughts and experiences, and some of them overlap with other disorders, but many of them are virtually only seen in schizo-spec people. Here's a list of some of them:
-Thought pressure
-thought block
-thought echo
-ruminating (rethinking or reliving events that have happened over and over)
-hearing one's own thoughts
-experiencing thoughts in physical space
-experiencing multiple contradictory feelings at once, causing issues making insignificant decisions
-confusing real perceptions with imagined scenarios
-being unable to describe or name one's feelings
-becoming irresistibly drawn to a meaningless detail
-short-term memory disturbance
-differences in the perception of time
-word-finding difficulties
-feeling anonymous
-feeling as if one's thoughts are not one's own
-feeling disconnected from the world
-hyperreflectivity
-feeling as if there are multiple people within oneself; this is different from having alters in that a) they do not have distinct identities, b) they cannot independently control the body, and c) there are no memory gaps. This can also have delusional qualities, such as having other beings transmitting thoughts into one's head.
-lack of common sense
-feeling as if one is younger or older than one is
-lack of clarity of consciousness
-mind-body distance
-feelings of the body moving when it's not
-suddenly needing to consciously control movements which are usually muscle memory, like walking, brushing teeth, etc.
-feeling as if there is a link between one's own movements and that of other people's or of objects
-confusing oneself and/or one's body with someone else, or feeling like another person is somehow intruding on one's existence by being near them
-thinking that unrelated phenomena reference oneself, or that the universe centers on oneself
-feeling that the world is fake or an illusion/that other people are automatons
-sudden change in spiritual or religious beliefs
-misinterpreting objects
-visual fragmentation
-objects shifting or changing before one's eyes
-objects appearing larger or smaller than normal
-vision seeming brighter or duller in color or illumination
-objects appearing closer or farther away
-distortions in the perceptions of space
-differences in the volume or accuracy of sounds
-synesthesia
-perceptions of past, present, and future are warped, confused, lacking, intrusive or otherwise disturbed
-feeling like anything could happen and it wouldn't be surprising or worrying
-feeling profoundly different from other people, observing them as a detached spectator
-feeling as if one can read others' minds or control their actions
-Feeling as though other people can read one's mind or control one's actions
-familiar people or things seeming unfamiliar in a strange way, or vice versa
-people seem as though they are trying to communicate something important regardless of the content of the conversation
-feeling compelled to withdraw from other people, defy people's wishes, act without regard for social rules, get along perfectly with everyone, or make everyone laugh
-having trouble with associating the meaning of a word to the word itself
-having unconventional ways of breaking up words and assigning meaning through storytelling throughout the word
-using grammar in unconventional ways
-using make-up words
-disorganized speech
-echolalia
-feeling like one is speaking about someone else when speaking about oneself
-inanimate objects seeming alive
-deja-vu or jamais-vu
-feeling as if the world has become puzzling or incoherent
-constantly feeling watched
-feeling as if everything is being controlled by an outside force
-double-bookkeeping
-feeling as though one is an automaton
-feeling as though one is a character in someone else's story
Of course most people experience a few of these occasionally, but if you experience many of these you might want to think about wether you fit the criteria for any of the schizo-spectrum disorders: schizoid personality disorder, schizotypal personality disorder, paranoid personality disorder, schizophreniform disorder, delusional disorder, brief psychotic disorder, schizophrenia, and schizoaffective disorder. If you already know you have one of these, i hope you can get some clarity out of this! I'm schizoaffective and I just learned about it recently, and it makes a lot of sense that I've experienced most of these. <|:)
