Idk maybe I’m just sensitive bc I’m a POC but it definitely seems like people on here are criticizing and being super harsh towards the POC queens more than when we found out Brooke was there. Y’all talked about that situation for a day and then moved on (unless I’m missing something) but now that it’s Silky and Vanj and Shangela y’all are talking about how disgusting they are and going through Twitter to find pics and videos of them out and about. Nobody is right in this situation and y’all are allowed to be upset bc trust me I am toobut Idk it just irks me how people don’t keep the same energy especially bc we’ve seen how Brooke had been going to Palm Springs and hanging out with her friends and even got covid bc she went out while she was in Canada and even said on a live that since she got covid she has the antibodies so she wasn’t concerned about getting sick again if she was around other people. Like I said y’all are allowed to criticize but it’s very clear to me that some of y’all are treating them very different than you did a white queen and it’s just incredibly frustrating bc this is always is the case.

Also I’m not trying to start any arguments with me speaking on my observation but my hope is that you all can ask yourselves whether or not your own internal biases (or biases towards certain queens in general) causes you to be more critical and angry towards V, Silky, and Shangela rather than queens like Brooke. Like imo, and feel free to correct me, had pics and videos of B in PV come out on twitter would you be just as angry and calling her disgusting? As I said before I 100% agree that they are wrong for going and partying and whatnot during all of this and I don’t want you to take this as me trying to defend them but it’s just not sitting well with me that once again it seems the POC queens are getting criticized to high heaven while a white queen does the same and the criticism from what I have seen wasn’t at all this fierce to the point where you were saying she or her actions were “disgusting” or implying that she was a shitty person. Also this isn’t an attack on Brooke I’m just using her as an example.

I may be wrong, and I apologize if I am, but for me this isn’t a matter of colors but of actions and common sense. I’m a POC too and I don’t care about your race, ethnicity, gender, if you’re the president, the pope or my mom, if you’re doing that level of nonsense I’m sure as hell going to be upset.

Traveling is unnecessary but at the same time there are cities whose economy depends mostly on tourism so it’s difficult, I think that if someone has such an urge to travel still not a great decision but there’s options to have a safe vacation and still have fun putting the least amount of people at risk. Following the guidelines of the city, staying with the same small group of people the whole trip, avoiding crowds; you can walk by the beach or pier, walk around the city and get to know the local culture, buy handicrafts, maybe take a tour, go for dinner and even have a cocktail. Unfortunately, there are a lot of people who only came to satisfy their need of party and do what is surely not allowed in their country and which I find selfish, inconsiderate and shows a total lack of respect for my country that is opening its doors to them.

Knowing that I had just lost another family member two weeks ago and seeing all those photos of a packed beach got me so mad, only to come two or three days later to find this video of an over-crowded party that in the last seconds turns to show V, my heart broke. Until that moment we hadn’t seen photos or anything of them going out so I thought within their bad decision they’d been wise enough to maybe stay at the resort as apparently B did when she was here but it turned out different. I’ve been with mixed feelings since then and i dont think anyone is enjoying this unfortunate situation.

And to answer your question, fuck yes if this same situation were happening with Brooke or whoever trust and believe I would be just as upset and disappointed, and maybe even more. COVID isn’t a game, being irresponsible in another country isn’t a joke when at the end of the day we’re all in the same boat.

Gentrification and The Last Black Man In San Francisco

Joe Talbot’s The Last Black Man in San Francisco is a tale told of the heartbreaking wave of culture-annihilating gentrification that has hit one of America’s iconic metropoles. It’s sloping streets, angular row houses, and quirky residents have made it a place of myth emboldened further by its key role in radical social movements such as the Anti-War Movement, The Black Panther Party, etc. But, the story Talbot tells doesn't reflect on the history known by most (white) Americans. Instead, he tells the story of the black man in San Francisco and all of the culture that gentrification is, successfully, trying to wipe away. 

The film’s protagonist, Jimmie Failes IV, and his best friend, Montgomery Allen, take it upon themselves to maintain the house that Jimmie grew up in. The rub of the whole thing though is that neither Mont or Jimmie live there, in fact, this older Yuppie (stands for: Young, Urban Professional) couple are the owners of the property. In one of the first scenes, Jimmie is repainting the window sill in the front of the house and the woman who owns the house threatens to call the police, which is quickly met by her apologetic husband. This struck me as funny because it perfectly represents both sides of the well-meaning, affluent, white person that have become the principal population group in the city. On one side, these new folks are tired of locals giving them shit and not caring about them or their cool publishing jobs; and on the other they won’t call the cops to avoid the risk of being “like” other White people. Although humorous, this scene is a haunting reminder to viewers who are themselves victims of gentrification that this is what the final stages of the process look like. Neighborhoods once teeming with ethnic influence, devoid of the blandness of White America, have now been transformed into pricey and bland versions of the suburbs where these damn people come from. 

The role of race is also very present in this film as it does a great job establishing the symbolic gravity that happens whenever Jimmie or Mont are on the screen. This becomes especially clear when the film returns to where Jimmie and Mont actually live, which is the far-off borough of Bayview-Hunters Point. This area plays just as key a role as the decadent Victorian house that Jimmie longs for, as it establishes the result of when a cities inhabitants are priced out of not just their homes but their impact on the cities culture. In this part of the map, there are a group of local men who spend their days busting the balls of any and everybody that come their way. This group acts as Greek Chorus which provides commentary and atmosphere to scenes where Jimmie and Mont seem to be singularly focused on the old Victorian. Another character that stood out to me was a Preacher who stands on a milk crate and preaches to these men, and anybody walking past, about the insane levels of inequality that have pushed Black people so far from the city. In one scene, the Preacher is railing against this mysterious cohort of men wearing hazmat suits cleaning some sort of chemical spill in the Bay right behind where the Preacher is standing. “Why are they wearing suits and we’re not? What are they not telling us?” he roars atop his milk crate to the attention of, uh, nobody that’s listening. 

The imagery of this movie, which includes the Chorus and The Preacher, speak to the San Francisco that is fading away fast. Another image that stands out is a scene where Jimmie is waiting at a bus stop next to a nudist and they are both accosted by a party bus full of inebriated Yuppies. They roar and cackle at the sight of the nudist and proclaim him “the fuckin’ man!”, but fail to realize they’re role in the extermination of people like the nudist. Jimmie and this nude man sit silently in shared exhaustion of this wave of people storming they’re city, despite their best efforts to “be cool”, the city is dying with each yoga studio and salad bar that opens. 

Although my experience as a straight, white man has no comparison to the struggles of POC and LGBTQIA+ communities in this country, I do share the same feeling of being exiled from your own home. I grew up in Hoboken, New Jersey which has now turned into a hot bed for gentrifiers who desire to work in New York. This is yet another iconic American metropole that has had it’s soul stamped out by the wave of suburbanites who feel it is their right to claim the city as their own. This is seen, mostly, in the cost of housing and cost of living which has skyrocketed as a result of the wave of private equity money that flooded the city and whose tentacles have reached nearly every industry you could imagine. Hoboken was once a working class town that had its fair share of racial tension, as any town in this country, but it always remained genuinely Hoboken, until the real estate developers came. Wharfs and warehouses that once played a key role in the American economy were demolished and turned into apartment complexes. This obviously brought more money into the community, but soon the locals that made Hoboken were being pushed out further and further. For instance, my mother and I lived in one apartment for my entire childhood until the end of middle school but the rent got raised and we were forced to move to Jersey City. In high school, I spent most of my free time in Hoboken because that’s where my friends were but everytime the party was over and my friends walked back to their childhood homes, I had to walk across the city to the train station to get back to my new home. I felt displaced and lonely for most of my high school days as I grappled with the harsh realities of gentrification and the brutality of capitalism. It also did not help that my mother was laid off from her job in 2009 and was essentially job-less for five years. 

My childhood home was sold to a young couple from somewhere that they turned into some trendy little spot for them to live for the time being. No care was given to the memories I made there or the progress that my mother made as a single mom raising a child in this area, just a cold “Sorry, thanks for cleaning it before you left”. The coldness of gentrification is the most galling result of this phenomenon. The young people move in and immediately lust for making their mark; whether it be calling the police or 311 on locals loitering on the streets, or building breweries in old school buildings, etc. Business' that I grew up walking by every day became boarded up and replaced with hair salons and boutiques that were going to close in six months anyway. But, despite the spirit that lives in places like Hoboken, San Francisco, New York, or Boston; money always seems to win.

Watching “The Last Black Man in San Francisco” gave me a strange sense of hope because it showed me how to defend your home, even when the odds are terribly stacked against you. There was a scene at the end of the movie where Jimmie Failes is sitting on the bus and overhears these two Yuppie women shitting on San Francisco and talking about much they “hate it here”. Jimmie turns to them and tells them “you don't get to hate it unless you love it”, which doesn’t make an impact on the women, but it made an impact on me and many others who have seen the movie. Hearing transplants bitch and moan about how shitty the New York subway is or complaining about the cat that lives in the bodega makes me laugh when it used to make me sad, because I know that the city has won. What I mean by that, is that when you hear Yuppies complain about the community they’ve gentrified it's clear that they’ve failed to make “the city their own” and have succumbed to the community that was already there. Cities are magical places that are the center for so many things, but what truly makes them magical are the people that built them, whether it be physically or spiritually. So, I hope to embody the spirit of Jimmie and Mont as fierce defenders of their homes even when it doesnt even seem worth it to fight for it anymore.

Hello, I am 21 and in college. I am in Northeast Illinois. I have not driven a car since I was 17. This is because I did miserably in driver education. I've carried my auto and homeowners insurance with State Farm for about 15 years. I've had multiple auto claims but only one claim on my homeowners poicy. Hurricane Maria: Inside Puerto Rican Barrio's Fight to Survive

On a hot and cloudless afternoon in mid-October, the eight San Juan barrios known collectively as the G8 look a lot like other neighborhoods in the hurricane-battered capital. Uprooted trees lean against roofless homes. Piles of storm detritus and soggy furniture crowd the streets, an odd diesel generator providing a rumbling soundtrack and some power, still a rare commodity on the island three weeks after Hurricane Maria laid waste to the national grid.

But these barrios are unique – a disaster zone within a disaster zone. For decades, G8 residents have lived in a near-permanent state of emergency on the perimeter of San Juan’s gleaming “golden mile” business district. The immediate cause of this emergency is a collapsed waterway: 25,000 people are clustered along the Caño Martín Peña, an inland channel that once drained rainfall into lush mangrove swamps, then carried it east into the San Juan Bay. But that was a long time ago. Unregulated dumping and development have narrowed and clogged the Martín Peña into a parody of a functioning wetland. Since the 1970s, heavy rains have brought flooding to the streets of Cantera, Obrero San Ciprian, and the six other G8 neighborhoods. All lack a modern sewage system, meaning floodwaters invariably mix with trash and waste-waters.

“Growing up here, you get used to waking up after heavy rain to find everything floating, water for blocks around your house,” says Chrismaury Alomar, a 22-year-old community leader from the G8 neighborhood of Las Monjas. “The Maria surge was worse, just like we knew it would be.”

Routine flooding, government neglect and vulnerability. These have defined much of life and local identity in the G8, sometimes called the Caño communities. They’ve also weaved a social fabric of special strength, its eight bolts connected by community institutions that offer a model of “resilience” – that new-century buzzword for building out social and environmental defenses in an age of accelerating climate change.

“The island is going to receive more intense hurricanes as the atmosphere and oceans warm,” says Louis Jorge Rivera Herrera, a San Juan-based environmental scientist and winner of the 2015 Goldman Environmental Prize. “The kind of community projects you see in El Caño, deeply rooted in citizen involvement and empowerment, provide an excellent footprint to follow in the years ahead.”

“Resilience” translates to Spanish as “resistencia,” a term with a double meaning that captures the essence of the G8’s political culture. This culture has effectively organized campaigns for infrastructure investment by the government (promised but as-yet undelivered), and built networks of participatory democracy that from webs within and between the barrios.

This culture, which has helped G8 residents deal with regular flooding for years, helped them weather the heavier hits of Irma and Maria.

“Our communities may not have the most resources, but they know how to rapidly organize and help themselves,” says Estrella Santiago, an environmental manager with Project Enlace, an umbrella organization for G8 institutions. “Being organized and having a history of active participation and solidarity was essential after Maria, especially in the crucial first week. The leadership already knew the specific needs of families, who were most affected, who needed diapers, a tarp, money. They also had experience with dirty floodwater and preventing diseases. In a lot of ways, people in the G8 were more prepared and more open to help each other.”

In the streets of Israel-Bitumul, a Caño community, I meet barrio president Jose Gonzalez as he delivers bottles of water. A jolly giant of a man, he makes sure I notice a nearby wall covered with political murals. “The kids made these,” he says. One depicts residents marching under a banner posing the question, “If you get to walk on carpets, why do we have to walk in shit?” Another shows a youth blocking a bulldozer and declaring, with an outstretched hand, “I am from here, and here I will remain.”

“They’d love to get rid of us,” says Gonzalez, 42. “Just like they did with Barrio Tokio.” Tokio, once the westernmost barrio of the Caño communities, was razed in the 1980s, its residents removed but not resettled. After the nearest section of the channel was dredged, construction began on high-rise condos, a sports stadium, and office towers. “We’re not going to let the city and developers do that again.”

At the center of the G8’s web of community networks is Project Enlace, which coordinates a range of activities across the area, including youth groups and adult education, urban farming and public art. In 2004, Enlace established a Community Land Trust to prevent displacement and gentrification; it marked the first time an “informal settlement” (as the G8 is designated) had ever used a public-private land trust to protect its territory. The pioneering Trust has since inspired other similar communities around the world and drawn international notice, including a UN World Habitat Award.

The offices of Project Enlace served as an emergency bunker in the immediate aftermath of Maria. Cells were established to organize clean ups, search and rescue, and other forms of aid. It also provided a ready-made network for city and federal authorities to plug into. In the days after the storm, FEMA contacted Enlace and asked them to help canvass the Caño communities’ needs: Who needed a tarp? Who needed wood? Who needed insulin?

G8 residents signed up to assist in distributing federal relief, but have sometimes found FEMA to be a frustrating partner.

“They never gave us a time frame for delivering the aid, and from what I have seen, I have little faith,” says Evelyn Quinones, a G8 resident who collected aid requests on behalf of FEMA. “We do this work with a lot of love, but also with a lot of sadness. We can’t tell people when the aid will come. We’re still waiting.”

While sympathetic to the magnitude of FEMA’s job, some G8 leaders have been disappointed by what they say are gaps in the agency’s ground game. Lucy Cruz, the president of G8 Association, says FEMA is short on Spanish-language technicians, and has asked the communities to provide translators during visits. When Cruz visited FEMA’s headquarters in the convention center, she says only a handful of FEMA staff members spoke Spanish. And very few of those could be found in the communities where they were most needed.

“We understand they’re stretched thin, but we are the most impacted communities in San Juan,” says Cruz. “We expected them to at least have offices here on the ground. They’re asking us to prepare claims through the Internet and over the phone, but people don’t have access to those things.”

In an email, FEMA’s spokesperson in San Juan, Daniel Stoneking, disputed such accounts, saying the agency had sufficient language resources on the island. “At least a quarter of the 1,500 people in the convention center are bilingual,” he wrote. “Many of our staff are local citizens. Virtually all of the Puerto Rico National Guard are bilingual. [Thirty] days and I have not once had a problem communicating with anyone. Responders and survivors have been working well together with grace and dignity.”  

The federal government, meanwhile, has yet to deliver on its promise to dredge the Martín Peña and help prevent and mitigate future flooding. No timeline or funding plan has been announced; both are complicated by Puerto Rico’s debt crisis and the austerity measures imposed by the Washington-appointed Financial Oversight Board. The role of the board in its problems is something G8 residents understand very well.

“You can see the building where they have their offices from here,” says Alomar, the activist from Las Monjas. “There’s money for debt payments, but not to build us the same infrastructure everybody else has? We deserve to live healthy, the same as the rich. People are tired of waiting.”

By triggering a wave of emigration, Maria has brought the G8 communities full circle. The growth of the barrios dates to the aftermath of San Ciprian, a 1932 hurricane that devastated much of Puerto Rico’s agricultural economy. The government encouraged newly unemployed farmers to migrate to San Juan, find work in the factories, and build homes by clearing the mangrove forests on the banks of the Martín Peña Channel. Nearly nine decades later, Maria has triggered another wave of migration, this time an exodus for the U.S. mainland.

It has not escaped residents that Maria’s dramatic highlighting of their arguments for environmental justice has accelerated the depopulation of the community. Like so many from around the island, many third- and fourth-generation G8 residents are making plans to leave. Among them is a very reluctant Chris Alomar, the 22-year old organizer from Las Monjas. His mother has enforced plans to move the family to Hartford, Connecticut, before the end of the year.

Standing on a bridge overlooking the narrow canal, Alomar tells me he plans to return to Las Monjas as soon as he can.

“I told my mom I’m not staying long,” he says. “My grandparents lived here. Survived here. Sometimes, yeah, it’s hard. Sometimes it makes you sad. Who wouldn’t get depressed? We live in shitty ass conditions. Flooding. Bad plumbing. But that’s when you got to hold yourself up. We’ve been through a lot. And we still here.”
