————————
I winced as my back slammed against the concrete floor of the jail cell, a twinge of pain rolling up my spine. A snarling face appeared above me only a moment later. He caged me in with a clawed hand on either side of my head, growling only inches away.
“Isaac!” I barked, trying to snap him out of it.
There was just enough space between us for me to brace my hands against his chest. I shoved him away with all the strength I could muster and, surprisingly, he stumbled up onto all fours a few feet away.
Isaac growled again from his crouched position, pupils blown wide, making his eyes look completely black. He snarled, revealing his sharpened teeth, and glowered at me dangerously. In the blink of an eye, he hauled me up to my feet and pinned me against one of the brick walls.
He leaned close, roaring loudly, and my eyes pinched shut as a fear-induced tremor wracked my body. I pressed my back firmly into the wall behind me, my heart sputtering in my chest. I peeled my eyes open when the room went silent and stared ahead with wide eyes, my breath reduced to trembling gasps.
I should probably take a moment to explain how I got myself in this ridiculous situation.
Stupidity, mostly. My intentions had been mothing but good and still, everything somehow managed to fall apart. But that seems to be a trend in my life, doesn’t it?
Earlier that day...
“You really don’t remember anything?” Allison pressed, despite being told the same answer several times on our way to school.
“They called it a fugue state.” Lydia quipped, swaying her hips as she held her jacket tightly beneath her crossed arms. “Which is basically a fancy way of saying ‘we have no idea why you can’t remember running through the woods naked for a week’.”
She rolled her eyes with a huff, as if the whole thing was nothing but a minor inconvenience. I watched her closely as she bounced up the stairs in her heels. She’d been acting way too...normal since we found her. She kept insisting that she’s fine and doesn’t remember a single thing but somehow, that seems so much worse.
“But, personally, I don’t care. I lost nine pounds.” She shrugged with a satisfied smile, and Allison chuckled.
I couldn’t help but frown. There was no way she didn’t have any lasting effects from being lost in the woods for a week, or that Peter’s bite had done absolutely nothing to her. There was just no way.
“Are you sure you’re ready for this?” I peered at her with concern, and she just rolled her eyes.
“Please, it’s not like my aunt’s a serial killer.” She turned on her heel, flicking her strawberry blonde hair over her shoulder, before either of us could respond.
Allison’s lips parted as she stared at her retreating figure, her brows lifting in surprise. I rubbed a hand over my lips to hide the smirk that was threatening to break through. While completely and utterly inappropriate, I couldn’t deny that the comment was pretty funny.
“Yeah, she’s fine.” I followed after her quickly through the front doors of the school.
My steps faltered as I saw that every single person in the hallway had stopped to stare at Lydia. She stood froze in place, her eyes wide as they flickered around the space. Quiet footsteps sounded behind us, the only noise in the otherwise silent hall.
“Maybe it’s the nine pounds.” Allison joined us at Lydia’s other side and leaned down to whisper the jab into her ear.
She squared her shoulders and flattened her features into a practiced boyeed expression before flicking a stray piece of hair away from her face and strutting away. I narrowed my eyes at her back, the persistent feeling that something was going on with her beneath the surface nagging at me. Allison and I shared a quick glance before following her toward our first class of the day.
————————
I let out an annoyed sigh, for once trying to actually focus on the assignment in front of me. We were doing partner work today and since there were an uneven number of students, Mr. Harris put me, Stiles, and Scott together. We were all surprised by that choice, but I honestly think he wanted us to get distracted so he’d have an excuse to give us detention again.
“Why would Derek choose Isaac?” Scott whispered harshly, continuing the conversation the boys had been having around me for the last several minutes.
“Peter told me that if the bite doesn’t turn you, it could kill you.” Stiles’ eyes briefly flickered toward me, and I avoided his questioning gaze. I was already painfully aware that we were no closer to figuring out what’s wrong with me. I didn’t need any reminders. “Maybe teenagers have a better chance of surviving.”
“Does being a teenager mean your dad can’t hold him?” Scott’s voice became urgent as he leaned forward in his chair.
They’d both been freaking out all day. Apparently, one of their teammates was pulled during their morning practice by the police for questioning. His father was killed mysteriously a few nights ago, and he was the prime suspect. Now, that wouldn’t usually be anything more than news-worthy gossip, but it conveniently happened moments after Scott realized he’s a werewolf.
He had to have been turned recently, because Scott only sensed that there was another werewolf on the team this morning. I’d never really noticed the guy before, but he was definitely on my radar now.
Unfortunately, it was most likely Derek who turned him, unless there’s another alpha running around Beacon Hills that we don’t know about. Honestly, I’m not sure which scenario would be worse.
It also just so happens to be a full moon tonight, because heaven forbid a day go by in this town without a supernatural disaster. Scott and Stiles were stressing the fuck out about what a freshly turned werewolf will be capable of, especially while stuck in a jail cell.
“Well, not unless they have solid evidence. Or a witness—wait...” Stiles’ eyes widened as a thought struck him and he abruptly turned around to face the table behind us. “Danny. Where’s Jackson?”
Scott and I peered back toward him as he glanced up from his paper, the pencil in his hand coming to a stop as his eyes flickered over the three of us slowly. They were swirling with a strange emotion I couldn’t quite decipher. It was almost as if he’d been listening in on our conversation.
“The principal’s office talking to your dad.” He answered slowly, seemingly surprised that we weren’t up to date on the latest developments.
“What? Why?” Stiles whispered harshly, throwing his hands up in exasperation.
“Maybe because he lives across the street from Isaac?” Danny shrugged, as if it were obvious.
My shoulders stiffened at his words. We all turned back toward the front of the room quickly when it was clear he wasn’t going to elaborate, not wanting to be caught talking. I glanced between Scott and Stiles, waiting for the inevitable. I could practically see the gears turning behind their eyes. They were coming up with something that I undoubtedly wanted no part of but would get roped into anyway.
“Witness.” Scott sighed, looking defeated.
Stiles’ brows pinched as a look of determination flickered over his face. “We have to get to the principal’s office.”
“How?” Scott leaned toward him expectantly.
Stiles’ wide eyes flickered around our table before landing on the assignment we were supposed to be doing. He practically lunged toward me so he could slide the paper out from under my hand.
He glanced to the head of the room where Mr. Harris was standing, his back to us as he wrote equations on the chalkboard, before crumpling it into a ball. I let out a huff, instantly realizing that he was about to do something incredibly stupid, and snatched it back.
“Wait a minute.” I glanced between the boys with narrowed eyes. “We literally just closed the door on the whole almost being murdered by two psychopaths thing. Can’t we sit this one out?”
“Not when we can help him.” Scott whispered earnestly, his eyes rounding as he silently pleaded with me to understand.
I groaned at his damn overactive conscience and sunk down into my seat, already giving in. I didn’t want to get involved in another problem already, but it was clearly important to him. Stiles held out his hand expectantly and I pursed my lips, hesitating.
He winked and blew me a kiss, the edge of his lips twitching into a smirk. I couldn’t help but roll my eyes. He was having way too much fun with this already. Finally, I dropped the paper ball into his upturned hand.
He wasted no time in chucking it toward the front of the room. It smacked right into Mr. Harris’s head and bounced to the floor. The room erupted into restrained giggles as he quickly whipped around to face the class.
“Who in the hell did that?” He snapped, his brows furrowing in anger.
Scott and Stiles both lifted a finger to point at each other, and I sank further down, making myself small. I had yet to get into any trouble at school, and I wanted to keep it that way, despite whatever potential supernatural crisis we were dealing with.
“To the office. Now.” The boys instantly popped to their feet at Mr. Harris’s curt demand, failing miserably at hiding their satisfaction that the plan went so smoothly. “You too, Ms. Y/L/N.”
I jolted upright in my chair and gaped at him, my eyes widening in shock. “But Mr. Harris, I didn’t even do—”
“Unless you’d like to finish that thought in detention, I suggest you get moving.” His eyes narrowed into a hard glare.
My jaw clenched at his patronizing tone, but I scooped up my things and followed the guys out into the hall anyway. I shouldn’t have been this annoyed, but I was already a full two weeks behind after missing so many days of school while recovering from Peter’s bite. For once, I actually wanted to focus on school and bring my grades up.
Less than a minute later, we found ourselves sitting outside the office, one of Scott’s ears pressed tightly against the window. Jackson was visible through the glass, his arms crossed lazily over his chest as he sat comfortably in one of the plush chairs. His eyes flickered slowly over Sheriff Stilinski, seemingly bored by their conversation.
Scott was reciting their every word as he listened in. It wasn’t like Jackson to care for other people, so exactly no one was surprised to find out that he knew about the apparent abuse Isaac was subjected to at the hands of his father for years without telling a soul.
The office door suddenly sprang open without warning, and I jumped in surprise. Stiles spazzed beside me, arms flailing as he grabbed the closet thing he could find to hide behind. Despite getting in trouble intentionally, he didn’t want his dad to see him. He’d been cracking down lately about his record of almost weekly detentions which were always, unsurprisingly, with Mr. Harris.
He slid down in his seat and lifted the magazine he found to cover his face. A moment later, Sheriff Stilinski walked out of the office with another officer in tow. His eyes trailed over Stiles slowly, his brow furrowing in confusion.
“Hi, Scott. Y/N.” He drawled slowly, his attention still firmly planted on Stiles.
We both waved awkwardly and he just shook his head with a sigh, accepting that his son was a lost cause before brushing past us. We barely had a moment to breathe before a deep, gravely voice fluttered from the open door.
“Kids.” My eyes widened as they swept up to the older man we’d seen at Kate’s funeral. Allison’s grandpa. Time seemed to slow as we all stared at him, equal parts surprised and confused. Just yesterday, we had a different principal. So what was he doing here? “Come on in.”
Hesitantly, we all stood and followed him into what was apparently now his office. We sat down in the chairs opposite his desk and waited anxiously for him to begin our lecture. He tooka few moments to ruffle some papers around on his desk before opening a small manila folder.
“Scott McCall.” He said slowly, his dark eyes flickering over the pages inside. “Academically not the most accomplished, but I see you have become quite the star athlete.”
His gaze swept up to meet Scott’s, who’s lips twitched up into a half-grimace half-smile sort of thing. He was stiff as a board beside me, clearly uncomfortable being this close to someone from Allison’s family.
“Mr. Stilinski.” He continued, attention moving to another folder. “Oh, perfect grades...but little to no extracurriculars. Maybe you should try lacrosse.”
Stiles perked up in his chair, eager to talk about his growing role on the team. “Oh, actually, I’m already—”
“Hold on,” Mr. Argent held up a finger, and Stiles visibly deflated before falling back into a slouch. He pointed to Scott, his eyes narrowing slightly. “McCall, you’re the Scott that was dating my granddaughter.”
Scott’s eyes widened, instantly pancking at his words. The two of them were still sneaking around, since her dad’s threat to literally kill him if he caught them together was very much active. “We were dating, but not anymore. We’re not seeing any of each other or...doing anything...with each other.”
I let out an irritated huff at his rambling. For as often as these guys lie, they should be much better at it by now. Mr. Argent chuckled, but it lacked any humor. It was honestly kind of unnerving, like when a super villain laughs just before killing someone in cold blood.
“Relax, Scott. You look like you’re about to crack a cyanide pill with your teeth.” The three of us just stared at him, unsure of how to respond to that weirdly specific and alarming metaphor.
“Now listen, guys.” He sent us a tight lipped smile, only slightly breaking the quickly mounting tension. “Yes, I am the principal, but I really don’t want you to think of me as the enemy.”
Stiles scoffed harshly from beside me, squirming back and forth in his seat. “Is that so?”
I jammed my elbow into his side at that ridiculously obvious reference to the supernatural. He twitched dramatically and rubbed at his ribs, furrowing his brows at me as if I were the one messing everything up. There was no telling what he already knew. He might not even know that Scott is a werewolf yet, and we didn’t need to be giving him any clues.
“However, this being my first day, I do need to support my teachers. So, unfortunately, someone is going to have to take the fall and stay behind for detention.” He continued, eyes immediately sweeping toward Stiles.
He was momentarily unaware of all the attention on him as he played with a frayed string on his red flannel. As much as it may suck, it just made sense for it to be him. Scott needed to figure out what to do about Isaac, and there was no way I was sitting in detention for a stupid plan that I had no part in.
After a few moments of tense silence his eyes flicked upward. They widened knowingly and he sighed before sagging back in his chair, ready to begrudgingly take one for the team.
With that decision made, Scott and I were dismissed. He instantly bolted upright and practically ran to the office door. I followed as quickly as possible, squeezing Stiles’ hand reassuringly before I went. Scott frantically tumbled down the small flight of stairs just outside the office before rounding the corner and throwing the side doors open.
“Scott!” I called, urging him to slow down. He wasn’t even using werewolf speed, he was just freaking the fuck out and going way too fast. “Scott, what are you doing?”
I ran outside after him, feeling a chill run up my spine as a gust of cold wind blew past us. He suddenly staggered to a halt and I swerved to avoid ramming into him. My eyes widened as I finally saw what made him stop so abruptly.
There was a police car pulling away from the curb, and Isaac was sitting in the back.
“So what’s the plan?” I breathed, feeling my stomach churn with anxiety.
I didn’t necessarily care what happened to the guy, especially if he did kill his father, but this couldn’t mean anything good for us. Everything just got a hell of a lot more complicated. It was one thing if they were just questioning him, but if they were arresting him our job would be much harder than we anticipated.
Scott let out a huff of annoyance and turned to face me. “Go back inside. I’ll figure this out.”
“Absolutely not.” I crossed my arms, offended at the mere suggestion that I walk away.
There was no way I’d be leaving his side anytime soon. They’d sufficiently dragged me into this problem with them, and now I was here to stay. Plus, I was honestly way too nosy to turn back now. There was only one more period left before school let out anyway, and I wouldn’t be able to focus with all of this going on.
Just then, a black sports car peeled up to the curb with a high pitched screech. I jumped back in surprise, the sight of the tinted windows making me nervous, but almost immediately relaxed when the passenger window rolled down to reveal Derek.
“Get in.” He ordered gruffly, not wasting any time with pleasantries.
“Are you serious? You did that. This is your fault.” Scott raised his voice in frustration and pointed toward the retreating police car.
“I know that.” Derek barked through clenched teeth, his fingers tightening around the steering wheel. Well, I guess it’s confirmed that he was the one who bit Isaac. “Now, get in the car, and help me.”
Scott rolled his eyes and stood firmly in place. “I’m gonna call a lawyer. Because a lawyer might actually have a chance at getting him out before the moon comes up.”
“Not when they do a real search of the house.” Derek shook his head solemnly, although it was hard to tell exactly what he was feeling behind his dark sunglasses.
“What do you mean?” I spoke up for the first time, utterly confused by his characteristic vagueness. It honestly wouldn’t be the least bit surprising if he’d been in Isaac’s house since the murder, but if there was something damning in there, he just needed to come out with it.
“Whatever Jackson said to the cops...” He let out a tense breath and pursed his lips. “What’s in the house is worse. A lot worse.”
He leaned over and popped the passenger door open, peering at us expectantly over his black frames. Scott and I shared a long glance, unsure if we wanted to get tangled up with him again already. Despite the fact that he wasn’t an immediate threat to us, he was an alpha now. That made him dangerous. And if he’s going around turning people, there’s no telling what his agenda is.
With a sigh, Scott stepped forward and got in the car. I chewed on my bottom lip nervously, but followed after a few seconds. It felt like we were opening the door to something much worse than a newly turned teenager gone rouge. I couldn’t place it, but that nagging feeling was back. There had to be something I was missing.
————————
“If Isaac didn’t kill his dad, who did?” Scott asked anxiously, waving a flashlight around the dimly lit space.
Derek was adamant that we wait until the “right moment” to enter Isaac’s house. After a couple hours of sitting around and ducking down to avoid any living thing that crossed his car, I was convinced that he was stalling. The moon would be up soon. We were running out of time.
The goal was to break Isaac out of the station before he has a chance to shift. There’s no telling how many people he could kill while stuck in there and although they wouldn’t be innocent deaths, the last thing Beacon Hills needed was more bodies.
“I don’t know yet.” Derek huffed, seemingly annoyed.
“Then how do you know he’s telling the truth?” I wrapped my arms tightly around myself, feeling the chilly evening air sinking into my skin. This house had absolutely no insulation and I was freezing already.
“Because I trust my senses. And it’s a combination of them. Not just your sense of smell.” He peered around me to glare pointedly at Scott.
I cringed at his disapproving tone as we continued through the house. I swear, sometimes he acts more like a disgruntled father or older brother than a random werewolf we con into helping us sometimes. It was equal parts endearing and off-putting.
“You...saw the thing at lacrosse this morning.” Scott grimaced, his shoulders stiffening as he realized he’d been caught.
“Yeah.” Derek quipped, letting his eyes scan over the disaster of a house in front of us.
There was nothing...wrong with it, per se. It just wasn’t well maintained. There was a mountain of dishes in the sink, clutter everywhere, and dust covering almost every surface. It was just kind of gross, overall. I was surprised that anyone would want to live like this, but after learning about what a dickwad Isaac’s dad was, I didn’t think he had much of a choice.
“Did it look that bad?”
As we made our way around the house slowly, I was beginning to question whether there was even anything here at all. It wasn’t that I thought Derek would intentionally lead us to a dead end, but I didn’t really trust him, either.
“Yeah.” He clapped a hand over Scott’s shoulder and pressed his lips into a firm line before coming to a stop in front of a door. “You wanna learn? Let’s start now.”
He popped the door open to reveal a narrow staircase that led down to a basement. Only a few feet of floorspace was visible through the darkness, but I could already tell it was a cluttered mess.
“What’s down there?” I asked tentatively, squinting my eyes in an effort to see more of the room.
Scott started walking down the stairs slowly, looking from side to side as he went. I chewed on my bottom lip as I watched him disappear into the darkness. Part of me wanted to follow him, but there was also a terrible feeling of dread churning in the pit of my stomach. There was something evil down there, I could just sense it.
“Motive.” Derek nudged my back gently and I sighed before following behind Scott.
“And what am I looking for?” He called over his shoulder, sweeping his flashlight over the space quickly.
“Follow your senses.”
There were piles of junk everywhere. That was the only word one could use to describe the stuff lining the walls. There were tools, random knickknacks, and a bunch of things that honestly looked like forgotten trash. There were big heaps every few feet, making it hard to walk through the room.
“What happened down here?” I breathed, my chest tightening with each step I took. I hugged my sides tighter, needing something to ground myself. It felt like my skin was buzzing, as if I could actually feel the raw emotions that had been left in this place. The air had this thickness that I couldn’t place.
“The kind of thing that leaves an impression.” Derek murmured ominously, and I turned to send him a glare.
He was being the opposite of helpful, as usual. If he knew what happened, he just needed to tell us so we could get the hell out of here. There wasn’t a single part of me that wanted to be here any longer than necessary.
Scott moved a shower curtain that was somehow hanging from the ceiling as he continued on his path around the basement. He fidgeted with a few things as he passed them by, walking around a disgusting, stained couch before kneeling down in front of a shattered TV that looked like it was from the eighties. He ran his fingers along the concrete floor beside it, his brows furrowing in concentration.
His head suddenly jerked upward, his gaze settling on a large freezer against the wall a few feet away. He slowly rose to his full height and stepped toward it. He stopped directly in front of it, his breathing labored. I rushed to his side at the sight of his heightened anxiety, more curious about the odd reaction than anything.
My lips pulled into a frown as he toyed with a lock that hung from a latch on the freezer. That definitely wasn’t normal. Scott’s eyes flickered to me briefly, but it was long enough for me to see the concern bubbling beneath the surface. We both jumped at Derek’s sudden presence beside us a moment later.
“Open it.” He encouraged, his eyes firmly planted on the freezer.
Scott lifted the lid at a painstakingly slow pace, the rusted hinges squealing in protest. He shined the flashlight inside, and my breath instantly caught at the sight of the interior. There were claw marks along almost every inch of the inside. Bloody claw marks.
The worst part was that they clearly weren’t from a werewolf. The scratches were dull, barely perforating the smooth metal. They were human. My heart dropped into my stomach at the thought of Isaac—or anyone, for that matter—being locked in something like this.
“This is why he said yes to you.” Scott’s voice was barely above a whisper as he peered down into the freezer. His eyes were dark, swirling with a stormy slew of emotions.
“Everybody wants power.” Derek quipped, crossing his arms with a shrug as if he hadn’t done anything wrong.
I scoffed in disbelief as Scott slammed the lid back down. He couldn’t honestly think that turning a tortured teenage boy was a good idea. He could’ve killed him, for starters, but instead may have given a vengeful human all the power he could ever ask for. Either way, he was screwed. And now, so were we.
“If we help you, then you have to stop. You can’t just go around turning people into werewolves.” Scott’s voice was hard as his eyes narrowed angrily.
“I can if they’re willing.” Derek lifted his eyebrows casually, completely oblivious to the seriousness of this situation.
There was no way of telling what anyone would do once transformed into a powerful beast. It was downright irresponsible for him to run around making his own werewolves, but as we learned, alphas are stronger with a pack. And if there was one thing I knew about the Hale’s, it’s that they’re power hungry.
“Did you tell Isaac about the Argents? About being hunted?” Scott’s voice rose incredulously, and Derek just shrugged again.
“Yes, and he still asked.”
“Then he’s an idiot.” I snapped, over this whole situation. It seemed that our problems always started with Derek. He was a walking magnet for supernatural horrors and I was more than ready to be done with him. It’d barely been a couple weeks since our issues with Peter.
I jumped as my phone suddenly started ringing in my back pocket. I hastily pulled it out, my eyes widening as I saw that I had several missed texts from Allison and Stiles.
“Hell—”
“We need to do something right now.” Allison’s urgent voice fluttered into my ear as she interrupted me before I could even get a word out. I put the call on speaker and held my phone out so the guys could hear. “My dad and grandpa were asking me all these questions about how Lydia was bitten by Peter and then they sent this guy out.”
“Wait. What guy?” Scott asked frantically, his eyes widening with anxiety.
“He was dressed as a sheriff’s deputy.”
I chewed on my bottom lip nervously. Did that mean the Argents had a man on the inside? Or did they somehow fake a uniform? I glanced up toward the Scott and Derek, who didn’t look any more pleased than I felt.
“They’re sending him to the station for Isaac.” Scott confirmed the fear nagging at the back of my mind.
“He was also carrying this box with him with something on it. Like a carving or something.” She rushed the words out quietly, probably hiding from her family somewhere in her house.
“What was it?” I pressed when she didn’t continue.
“Hold on, hold on. It’s in one of these books. I’m gonna send you a picture.”
My phone vibrated in my hand a moment later and I instantly clicked on the notification. It confirmed what all of us were surely thinking. “Wolfsbane.”
She paused for a moment, most likely wondering what the hell I was talking about. There was still a lot she didn’t know about the supernatural. “Okay, what does that mean?”
“Just come meet me at Isaac’s house. Hurry.” Scott ordered, taking my phone from my hands before ending the call abruptly.
I raised my eyebrows in question, and he sighed. “I have a plan.”
It was only when he dropped the phone back into my hand that I noticed his nails had extended into pointed claws. My eyes widened with the realization that the moon was coming up. That meant Scott and Isaac both would be losing control any minute.
We were officially out of time.
————————
My legs bounced anxiously as I sat on the front steps of the house. They were falling apart, the conceete all cracked and dirty. I let out a slow breath into my hands as I tried keeping them warm. My eyes flickered up toward the sky, my heart sinking further into my stomach with each inch the moon rose.
I let my eyes sweep back to the front door, wondering what was going on inside. The loud squeal of tires against the asphalt had me jerking upright in surprise. I turned back toward the road and let out a sigh of relief at the sight of Stiles’ Jeep lurching to a stop at the end of Isaac’s driveway.
I popped to my feet and jogged toward the car as he threw the passenger door open. His wide eyes flickered over my frame from head to toe quickly, a gesture he’d started after I was released from the hospital. It honestly seemed like a habit at this point, an uncontrollable urge he had to check for some kind of psychotic break every time he saw me.
“Where’s Scott?” He breathed, still leaning across the bench seat.
“Doing something really stupid.” I mumbled, moving out of the way as Derek appeared at my side.
He and Stiles exchanged a tense glance as he wordlessly got into the back of the Jeep. I slid into the passenger seat and let the door fall closed behind me. We were leaving Scott and Allison—who’d arrived a few minutes ago—in the basement to figure out his wolf hormones or whatever. If he was going to be helpful tonight he needed to stay human, and she could assist with that better than anyone.
Stiles eyed me suspiciously, but eventually jerked the car into drive and sped off. The ride to the sheriff’s station was short, but painfully awkward. Derek and Stiles were taking turns glaring at each other in the rearview mirror and I wanted nothing more than to remove myself from the situation and let them work through whatever the hell was wrong with them. But I was stuck, so I sat in silence until we pulled up at the back entrance of the station.
“Okay.” Stiles sighed and threw an arm over the back of the seat so he could glance between both of us. “The keys to every cell are in a password protected lockbox in my father’s office. The problem is getting past the front desk.”
Derek huffed from the back, as if personally offended by that statement. “I’ll just distract her.”
He leaned forward to push me out of the way so he could get out, but Stiles lunged across the seat to grip his leather jacket tightly. “Whoa, whoa! Hey. You’re not going in there.”
Derek’s eyes narrowed before flickering between Stiles’ face and the hand balling up the fabric of his jacket.
“I’m taking my hand off.” His voice rose anxiously as he lifted both arms in surrender.
“I was exonerated.” Derek snapped, clearly annoyed at being labeled a criminal for the lie that Stiles and Scott had come up with a few weeks ago. In their defense, Peter did have us trapped in the school with a bunch of people who knew nothing about the supernatural. Framing him for the murders Peter had committed was the best option at the time.
“You’re still a person of interest.” I tried to reason with him, but it didn’t look like we were making any breakthroughs as he rolled his eyes in aggravation.
“An innocent person.”
“You? Yeah, right.” Stiles scoffed with a chuckle, but instantly sobered up at the glare Derek cast his way.
“Alright, whatever. It’s fine. Let’s just go.” I rushed out, starting to get impatient.
I just wanted this night to be over already. We had Scott probably shifting at Isaac’s, Isaac definitely losing control inside the jail, and Derek causing way more problems than he’s worth. It was a lot for one day.
Derek went inside first, shamelessly flirting with the woman at the front desk. Stiles and I waited a few minutes to make sure that she was sufficiently distracted before slinking inside and quietly ducking past the lobby. Stiles ran toward his dad’s office, and I was right on his heels. Once inside, he found the small lockbox mounted onto one of the walls and punched in the code.
He lifted the front panel off and instantly froze. “Oh, no...”
He bolted out of the office so fast that I had to stand there for a moment, processing what the hell just happened. After coming to my senses and realizing that someone had taken the keys, I ran after him, easily catching up within seconds. My body slammed into his back harshly only a moment later as we rounded a corner and nearly barreled into a police officer.
“Whoa.” Stiles breathed, staggering back a step. His eyes widened in alarm, knowing that we weren’t supposed to be here right now. “Uh. We’re just looking—um...”
His awkward attempt at lying trailed off as his eyes flickered down to the man’s leg. I did the same, my breath catching at the sight of an arrow sticking out of his leg. Allison must’ve gotten Scott under control, since before we left she promised to help if she was able. My panic only grew as I noticed the syringe grasped tightly in one of his hands.
“Oh, shit...” Stiles gripped my arm and started running down the narrow hallway.
We only made it a few steps before he was violently jerked backward. My eyes widened as I felt his hand leave me and I whipped around to see what happened. A startled gasp tore past my lips as I watched the man wrap an arm around Stiles’ throat and haul him against his chest.
“Hey! Let him go!”
He started dragging Stiles down the hall, and I instantly ran after them. I had no idea what I could possibly do to help, but I wasn’t stopping for anything. All I knew was that I couldn’t let him get hurt. His arms flailed wildly and he kicked his legs, trying anything to break free. My eyes swept the area for anything that I could use as a weapon.
“Y/N...go!” Stiles gasped through his struggle.
With a grunt, the man brought a hand up to cover Stiles’ mouth as he used his free hand to land a few punches at his ribs. His eyes were wide as they silently urged me to run away. But I couldn’t. There was nothing that would make me leave him right now.
He somehow managed to pull the fire alarm as the man dragged him through the doorway to the cells. I cringed at the loud ringing, but quickly forgot the inconvenience as the man dropped Stiles into a heap on the concrete floor.
I instantly rushed to his side, placing a gentle hand on his back as he rubbed at his chest and gasped for air. There was barely enough time for relief to begin bubbling in my chest before a low growl echoed through the room. We both stilled at the sound.
Eerie silence blanketed the room for only a split second before Isaac emerged from a dark corner, teeth barred. He lunged at whoever the Argent’s had sent, wrapping a clawed hand around his throat before slamming him down onto a metal interrogation table. I winced at the harsh sound, but could do nothing but watch as he threw the man across the room.
His head met the brick wall first, the impact instantly knocking him out cold. Isaac’s head then whipped in our direction, and my breath caught. A bolt of fear surged up my spine as his empty eyes caught mine. They weren’t even glowing, which was somehow much worse. I’d barely noticed the guy when he was a human, but the sight of him as a werewolf right now was terrifying.
My heart lurched in my chest as he suddenly sprang toward us. Stiles gripped my elbow and tried to pull me with him as he scrambled away, but Isaac got to me first.
“No!” Stiles yelled frantically, flailing up onto his feet as quickly as possible.
And that brings us back to the present...
I peeled my eyes open when the room went silent again and stared ahead with wide eyes, my breath reduced to trembling gasps. Isaac’s beastly face was only inches from mine, our close proximity only making my heart beat faster.
Suddenly, a loud crunch echoed through the room. Isaac whipped around, momentarily forgetting about me, and I peered around his shoulder shakily. Derek’s eyes slowly rose from the syringe he’d just stomped to pieces, landing on mine and Isaac’s compromising position with a glare.
Suddenly, Isaac turned around and lunged toward him with a growl. Derek snarled, revealing his sharpened canines, and growled loudly. My eyes pinched shut as the walls vibrated from the sheer volume of it. I sagged to the concrete floor, my knees giving out as I suddenly felt faint.
My vision blurred as I slid down the brick wall, but I could still make out the way Isaac dropped down and cowered into a corner. Derek finally stopped roaring and easily shifted back into his human form, his teeth and finger nails retracting. Within a second a pair of strong arms were wrapped around my shoulders. I was hauled into a warm chest, and I let my eyes fall closed with relief.
“How did you do that?” Stiles breath fanned the top of my head as he ran a hand down my back soothingly.
I let my eyes flutter open to look at Derek, only to find that he was already studying me curiously. I already knew the answer, and it did nothing to calm my nerves. He was not only an alpha, but the alpha that bit Isaac. They had a connection, just like Peter and I. I couldn’t help but wonder, as my gaze flickered toward Isaac’s crumpled frame...
If Derek had that kind of power over him, what did that mean for me?

your destiny is an archangel
title: your destiny is an archangel (drabble)
pairing: gabriel x reader
h&h sq: archangels
rating: pg-14
tags: following the light, being told to do something you have no say in, being forced into something that you didnt want.

H&H list
ordinary, you were far from it. your brothers were the Winchesters, your father was John Winchester, tho you were the youngest winchester you were still the ever brighter star in the winchester family tree.
your brothers often left you in charge of the impala and all the technical stuff making bullets and things like that. but this was your first hunt. this was the first time being out in the field after months even years of training.
your brothers had sent you to a simple hunt while they handled a vamps nest and a werewolf den. you enter upon the scene after speaking to the locals who all claimed to have seen a really bright light and heard screaming and voices calling their names.
you see the light and suddenly your surrounded by it. the light clears and you are being held back by what look to be several armed soldiers. 2 more walk toward you: one blond hair, blue eyes really ripped. the other chestnut brown hair, brown eyes also really ripped.
the guards holding you back made you drop your handheld as they forced you to bow before the 2 men standing before you.
Michael: why do you look at us like you dont have a clue what or who we are?
you were in a bad mood right then unsure of what would come out of your mouth you didnt think about it you just spoke.
YN: cause i dont you dumbass, now let me go or i swear my brothers will not be kind to you when they find out you have their little sister.
Michael: chill out little winchester, we know who you are... wait let me start this again. my name is Michael son of God archangel of the highest ranking and the leader of the army of God. this fellow beside me is my brother Gabriel also an archangel i believe your people would call him a trickster.
all you could do was stare, you were in a bit of shock and a state of disbelief. you were talking to angels, never mind that archangels, the biblical ones you had red about in the bible.
YN: okay so now i understand who you guys are, but what are you doing here and what does it have to do with me and my current predicament.
Michael: cause its your destiny YN to marry my brother Gabriel and become his wife. he would help you in your quest to help your brothers stop every single damn monster that invades earth.
you instantly looked at Michael like he had just blown up the state building in new york. you looked at him like he had just melted an entire city or brought the dinosaurs back.
but he did non of those things he instead had just told you that you were to marry someone, nevermind that it was the freaking archangel Gabriel. you were not sure of how your brothers, dean especially would react.
YN: are you guys insane? you are telling me that at 25 years old i have to marry Gabriel the archangel who spoke to the virgin mary and announced to her that she would bare Jesus. your telling me that when you both should know full well that my brothers will not like this idea at all... never mind the fact that i like earth i am not moving anywhere that isnt earth. nevermind the fact that my phone is ringing, its my brothers if i dont answer it they will get worried and come after me they know where i am and...
Gabriel spoke for the first time since arriving, tho his eyes had never left your form.
Gabriel: guards release her to allow her to answer her phone
The guards released you, you reached into your pocket and pulled out your phone answering it immediately.
Yn: hey Dean!
Dean: you took a bit to answer, everything okay.
Yn: well umm I found out the cause of the disturbance. But Dean it's archangels. I am being starred at by archangels.
Dean: I'm sorry what? Archangels as in the biblical beings. Did they speak? Do they have names?
YN: I have had the pleasure of speaking with the archangel Michael and the archangel Gabriel. But what they told me I have a hard time grasping the concept of. And your not gonna like it.
Dean: what did those douchebags want?
Yn: Michael said I have the destined honor of becoming the wife of Gabriel. Apparently God set this in his book long time ago.
You could hear the roar of the impala you knew that your brothers were now pissed.
Dean: stay there we are on our way there in 10 min.
The line went dead, you hung up the phone it was Gabriel who spoke next.
Gabriel: is everything okay?
YN: my brothers are on their way. They are coming here they did not take too kindly to the news.
Michael: as it is written the brothers Winchester shall come to bare witness to this auspicious union for it will bring some light into this world.
Gabriel: Michael, dear brother, can I take YN to speak in private?
Michael gives a swift nod, Gabriel holds his hand to you.
Gabriel: would you like to take a stroll with me?
YN: is this of our own free will?
Gabriel: completely..
Yn: then sure we have a few moments to kill before my brothers arrive.
You take the hand of Gabriel, the two of you walk away from Michael and the God squad. Gabriel turns to you a short while later.
Gabriel: how do you feel about this ordeal?
YN: honestly I don't know. I mean my entire life I've been trying to find the person I'm meant to be with for the rest of my life. all my life i have tried to find love before it sneaks up on me. when my father died i shut myself off from love. i have not thought of the idea of love in a long time. but now being told that i am destined to marry, i just dont know what to think.
Gabriel: what does your heart tell you right now?
you closed your eyes for a moment, taking his position right behind you.
YN: that you are good for me. that with a little work and effort we can be the happiest people on earth we can build a future together based on love, protection and kicking so much ass.
Gabriel at that point spun you around neither of you noticing the lights from the impala nor the people walking toward you. but instead he kissed you, your brothers, michael, the guards all saw this kiss.
the thing that snaps you both out of the kiss is a very very familiar voice speaking in a harsh tone.
Dean: YN what the fuck do you think you are doing?
You stand in defense of Gabriel as your big brother strides towards you. sam just smirked. you knew he wasnt as pissed about this as Dean.
YN: dean stop thats enough. i dont want to hurt you.
Dean: you would dare to challenge family? have you lost your senses completely? he is an archangel, your a human!!!!!
YN: its my destiny to marry him. for once in your life stop thinking the worst and just listen. please dean, for me. if you love me bro, you will listen to what Michael has to say.
dean backed off and went to stand near sam and started pacing. you nodded at michael to start talking.
Michael: peace be with thee Dean for i nor my brother nor my guard wish your sister or family harm. we bring this night news of great joy for all of you. this night ordained by God in his book is the night that i release Gabriel into his new life with YN on earth. i of course will return for the wedding but tonight is the release. whenever thee decides the wedding date my dear brother knows how to get ahold of me. Dean tho you are only ever looking out for your family, take a good look at your sister with my brother, tho they not have known each other for very long have started the release process. gabriel had no idea that the release starts with a kiss and ends with my pronunciation and blessing. but you and Sam need to agree as well otherwise your sister will never find her happy ending nor the ending you wish for her. so what say the mighty brothers winchester. do you both consent to this?
Sam steps towards you and Gabriel giving you a big hug which you return. when he lets you go he speaks soft tones loud enough for all to hear.
Sam: i Sam Winchester, give my permission and consent to this destined union cause it makes me happy to see my sister smile.
you watched as Sam went to Gabriel and shoke his hand welcoming him into the family. then sam went to dean and had this little conversation.
Sam: look Dean i know that you are the older brother and your supposed to look out for me and Yn i get that but this is how her story is destined to go, we are still a family, just an expanded family and at least one of us should be happy in our lifetime of killing all the evil sons of bitches we can find. if you remotely care at all about our sister and how this will affect her if you say no then think about it this way. all mom and dad wanted for all of us was a normal life. with Yn and the destiny squad she gets part of the normalcy while we all still get to keep doing what we do and to top it off we get to see our sister be happy in the ways we never could dean.
dean paced some more he knew what the right choice was but he also had to convince himself that it was the correct choice. he looked at how you were smiling with Gabriel and he started walking towards you Sam became prepared to step in just in case, but both you and gabriel turned towards your big brother and watched his emotions reflect in his facials.
Dean: im such an ass. i mean i walked up in here acting like, well dad did when sammy wandered off to college. look sis im so sorry for how i acted and after pacing round arguing with myself i finally came to the realization that this is not gonna hurt the winchester legacy. in fact it will strengthen it. Michael i know that things are gonna change but tell me one thing, did both our parents end up in heaven? and is it possible for them to join us for their wedding.
you walk closer to your brother
YN: dean does that mean?
Dean: yes i consent you both have my blessing. but i wasnt kidding either that was a serious question.
Michael: unfortunately i am unsure. for you see, i do not know who is up and who is down im too busy training the troops for gods army. the matters of state are not up to me. they are left up to the one person who was anointed by god to do the job fairly. moses. but hey i cant complain. now if everyone is ready i will do the pronunciation and give my blessing.
You all take stance in front of Michael is you facing Gabriel, behind you is Dean, behind Gabriel is Sam, the guards stand away from us witnessing what happens.
Michael: Heaven rejoices this glorious day for here is one destined promise from God this shall be the release of my brother from his heavenly duties but keeping his connections to heaven, and into his new life here on earth with YN. Both of these 2 are about to become more deadly than anyone knows. I was there when YN was conceived. I told John that his daughter would be wonderful that her destiny would be full of family and joys beyond measure. My brother you have no idea how much pressure I have endured from father. When he told me about this day, what was to happen, he said I would feel the emotion of releasing you more deeply than anyone. Gabriel son of God angelic prince of the lower realms, do you accept this destiny as is ordained in the book dad wrote out?
Gabriel: yes I accept what is being laid out before me
Michael: YN child blessed by the upmost holy of hollies, sister to the brothers winchester who have become feared among the supernatural. now here before these witnesses do you also accept the destiny written out before you in the book of God?
Gabriel’s hand grasped your own, suddenly your fear was gone. this allowed you to speak.
YN: i accept the destiny laid before me
Michael: very well, your first task is to get used to this new life, within the time ahead heaven shall expect the following from you both: a wedding, a child, and defeating whatever crosses your paths. can you both promise that?
you nod as does Gabriel.
Michael: by the powers and laws of heaven in accordance to the written word of God i now pronounce this ceremony finished releasing my brother into the arms of this beautiful young woman forever. brother i believe you know what to do.
Gabriel pulls you into a dip and kisses you.
Everyone applauds, congratulations flow in from every guard then it comes to your brothers.
Sam: kiddo, you were radiant up there. That was amazing.
Dean: so I guess we need to start figuring out a sturdy place to put down roots.
YN: for now we are gonna be just as content living on the road with you 2 nuts and besides its the family business, just because this is my destiny doesn't mean i have to stop the family mission. To kill every evil son of a bitch that dares to reek havoc on the earth. Plus we don't have a definite set placement for much of anything at this time. Where to next?
That's when Michael approached you lot.
Michael: don't forget the promises and oaths taken here today. Brother to wish you all the luck in this new life of yours. YN take good care of my bro, he is certainly one of a kind. I'll also expect a formal invite to the wedding it's not every day one of my own brothers gets married. Now I must go still have to patrol the east part. Farewell, till we meet again.
Michael and the guards disappeared. This left you, Gabriel and your brothers, you took into consideration that you had walked to this location so as not to draw suspicion. And you certainly were not up to walking back to the hotel or where ever.
Dean: we have the bags and shit from the hotel, we are heading to Bobby's from here. There is trouble Kansas close to where me and Sam were born. Bobby's gonna brief us before we go, hell he might even join us. But onto bigger issues, the 2 lovebirds can sit in the backseat just no having sex in the car ever not ever. Rule number 2 I pick the music no one else does and number 3 let's hit the road to make it to Bobby's for dawn.
You got into the backseat sliding over gabriel, you were not stranger to conversation but you stretched out your head was in gabes lap, you were exhausted mentally anyway.
physically you felt fine. you felt amazing actually, feeling gabe just running his fingers through your hair and the lull of the impala made you just stare into the eyes of the man to be your husband with love and calming affection.
about 2 hours into the drive, you had fallen asleep. Sam was also sleeping, taking the time to rest and relax. this left Dean and Gabriel still awake.
Dean: for what its worth, you seem to see the best in my sister. i know this is very new for you too but know that you and i have alot to discuss if i am to train you and her.
Gabriel: for what its worth, i could see it in your eyes when you saw me with your sister, saw me holding her in my arms, kissing her. dude i get it, we will figure this out, we are going to approach this new relationship one step at a time.
Dean: by the way how are you feeling after the whole being released from the heavenly duties thing. after the whole basically becoming human thing.
gabriel: honestly it feels like i am floating in a suspended reality that could disappear at any point. honestly i love this feeling. i have to ask tho why are we going to Bobby’s right now. why drive through the night.
Dean: cause i know that YN will need to train, she usually sleeps off an adrenaline rush than crashes with a massive burst of anger in the morning. so if we get there before she wakes up, i will be able to set up the yard make it look like its ready for training. so that way she can spiral and we can watch while she tries to prove her worth. but she will do that for about two hours or so until she crashes on her knees crying.
Gabriel looked down at your sleeping form, knowing that your entire future together would bee full of these moments of learning and hard times together.
Gabriel: and how often does this happen?
Dean: only when something dramatic changes or after sam and i come home with broken bones and such. usually she will go into her burst after she resets us or patches her up. but i was thinking about this a while now, this started just after dad passed. could that have been the thing to set her hunting skills into over drive?
Gabriel: you think these are her hunters skills trying to break through. and what it causes her to crash after 2 hours. that doesnt sound right. i mean it does but it doesnt. you understand that trauma affects people differently, maybe loosing your dad was harder on her than she let you believe.
Dean: then why would she lie to us. say that she is fine when she isnt?
Gabriel: probably cause she didnt want you and Sam to look at her differently. she respects your opinion, as her older brother its your job to notice when she is not being completely honest and she probably does this to try and get your attention. she knows that you wont do anything otherwise so she has to try something else.
Dean had to stop for a second and analyze what Gabriel had just said. he realized that he was right, so within a few more hours you all arrived at Bobby’s. Carefully Gabriel carried you inside and up to your room. your brothers were gonna stay in the living room on the couch, in order to explain things to bobby.
Gabriel having now laid you on the bed pulled off your shoes and your sweater putting a light blanket over you. then he took off his own shoes, his coat and his shirt and crawled under the covers beside you. that was when your sleeping form curled up against him.
that was the first time he had felt truly happy. he passed out short while later anxious to see what the new life would bring. dawn rose high in the sky, the sound of bobby and your brothers arguing in the morning was a sound you knew all too well. you quietly stretched out.
Gabriel: morning beautiful.
you turned to him and smiled.
YN: morning, im gonna take the dog outside. im sure if you went downstairs there will be food for you. ill see you when i return.
you went out the door and downstairs the 3 men in the kitchen heard you, Gabe grabbed one of the muscle shirts out of the pile of mens clothes in the room before he went downstairs.
Gabriel: its an honor to meet you Bobby.
Bobby and Gabe shoke hands thats when Gabriel noticed that you were standing outside with the dog sitting by your legs as you stood at the barrel, with the hand held in your hands and just shooting the tree stumps out in the field.
Gabriel: now i finally feel like i am beginning to understand this thing that humans call love.
Dean: its a funny thing thats forsure. but we have a theory. what if you went outside and see if you could talk to her. she has threatened to shoot any of me, sam or bobby if we get too close but she might let you near.
Gabriel continued to watch you shoot the tree stumps. he just watched, he was waiting for the right moment to go out there.
Gabriel: i just hope that i can get through to her. if the great dean winchester thinks i can bring his sister back into the light then it must be true.
Dean: you know what why dont you go out there right now see if she opens up. cause im sure she wont shoot you down if you ask her if you can join her.
Gabriel hesitates a few short moments before he puts on his shoes and walks out the door. he slowly approaches you. Rumsfeld barks to let you know someone is approaching.
Gabriel: mind if i join you? your brothers mentioned that you might be over here.
You turned to face Gabriel... you were staring into the eyes of the man to be your husband. you felt your knees begin to go weak. you were unsure of the conszequences to what you would soon do, but you did it anyway.
YN: there is another handheld on that stump over there. just hold it like i am and pull the trigger aiming for the tree stumps.
gabriel mimics your movements and stances. you were the most radiant person he had ever seen shooting a gun. gabriel shoots the stumps with you for a bit. but your knees buckle out from under you and you break down in tears.
Gabriel: are you alright?
YN: ever since my father died, i have been living a lie. im no hunter, im not even a proper one. i can barely hold my own when im fighting my brothers, i can only shoot a gun when im by my self in this field with rumsfeld and nothing but the wind. i know i have worried my brothers, i know they are never gonna look at me the same way. im a fool for thinking that i could ever join the family business, help get revenge for dad’s death, i am never gonna amount to what my brothers are.
Gabriel: dont talk like that. you are every bit the woman that your brothers would ever want you to be. dean mentioned to me about how you mihgt just open up if i came out here. but that isnt why i came over here, i came to you cause you are my present and my future, im not gonna let you suffer in this alone. i know we are still new to this whole idea that we are to be married and such, but i promise you this you will never be alone. i might not be fully angelic anymore but i can still be pretty angelic when i want to be. part of my negociation with my brother about my release was that i get to keep my wings. so thats exactly what i plan to do. how bout we go for a nice flight? maybe to Paris, have some breakfast?
you got up with Gabriel for support, you had stopped crying sort of, but those tears got wiped away by the love of your life. you sent a quick text to Dean before Gabriel pulled you flush with his body, his wings came out and he flew you both off to paris.
this left Bobby, Dean and Sam in awe as they had just watched this take place from the window.
but that is another story for another time.

"Bigfoot."
Hopper leaned back in his chair; let it creak and groan under his weight until he knew it was at its limit, and then pushed it a little more. He studied the no-nonsense expression on the hunter before him, and intrinsically knew that the man was speaking truth.
"Bigfoot," the old man said again, speaking a little sterner than he had before once he recognized Hopper's amiable expression of disbelief. "I seen't him out in the woods just the other day."
The aging man had lumbered into the police station almost immediately after Hopper came in, bundled in some worn hunting gear that looked almost as old as he was. The deputies had offered to speak with him after hearing his initial claim, but they'd been refused when Callahan couldn't stop smirking. The old hunter had insisted on speaking with Hopper, who leaned forward now, taking the stress off of his chair to take a sip of the coffee Florence had brought in for him. He didn't look at the old man as he drank.
"So let me get this straight," Hopper began, setting his coffee aside to rub at his forehead, "you came in first thing in the morning worried about a missing friend of yours, but now you're telling me you're worried about Bigfoot."
"You know me, Jim," the hunter said, a slight hint of pleading desperation edging out of his voice. "You know I ain't some crazy old coot. I ain't seen Lamm in a long while, and yessir I'm worried 'bout him, but when I went out to his cabin to check on him I seen it: I seen Bigfoot!"
As incredulous as the claim was, Hopper believed him- not about it being Bigfoot, exactly, but he believed that the man had seen something out there in the woods, and it had the possibility of being that something he'd spent the last two weeks fruitlessly searching for.
Regardless, he didn't want to let the old hunter know he was taking him seriously. The last thing he needed was for his community to think he believed in this sort of nonsense, but people in town were going missing, and people he knew were getting hurt: if his only lead should turn up in the form of an old man believing he'd caught sight of an urban legend, then so be it. He'd follow it through, but he'd be subtle about it.
"You sure it wasn't just a trick of the light or something, Wes? You know your eyes aren't what they used to be," Hopper remarked casually, softening his voice to let him down easy. "And this isn't the first time Lamm's gone missing; you know he's one of those types of shut ins. Remember those weeks he was gone hunting 'vampires'? He's the kind of guy who lives in his own head more than he lives out here, he'll turn up again on his own time."
The hunter's lips twitched into a frown. "Alright, maybe Lamm is a little off kilter," he relented, averting his eyes for a second, "and maybe it weren't Bigfoot, but the tracks it left were huge 'n mighty, by God, and I ain't seen nothin' else like it before. If it weren't Bigfoot, then at the very least it had big feet, Jim, and I ain't never seen feet quite like 'em."
Interest piqued, Hopper became more attentive. "How's that?"
"Well, they was stretched out lookin', for one." The hunter paused, tilting his head slightly as he tried to recall the details of what he'd seen out in the woods. He held his hands up, spaced apart in an approximation of how long the prints he'd found had been. "Human lookin', almost, which is what had me thinkin' it coulda been Bigfoot. They weren't the tracks of somethin' native 'round here, and I only caught but the barest glimpse of it, but it was tall, Jim; taller'n you or I."
That sounded right; the prints he'd found and unsuccessfully tracked were, as the hunter said, 'huge 'n mighty' and matched the description of what he'd just been told. It didn't take an expert's opinion (though he had consulted one) to discern that the markings just weren't natural. Hopper set his mug of coffee aside and pulled out a notepad from one of his desk drawers. He uncapped a pen and held it to the page for a moment before writing down a few preliminary notes for himself on the top line.
The hunter cocked his head and leaned forward to look at what he was writing and said, "That don't look official."
"Because it's not; this one's just gonna be between us, alright?" Hopper said, looking up to meet Wesley's blue, watery eyes. He held the stare long enough to get his point across, waiting for a sign of affirmation before looking back to the notepad and pressing the tip of the pen to the paper. "Tell me where and when exactly you saw this 'Bigfoot' of yours."
The day was cold and grey at its start, with harsh, biting winds ushering in thick clouds that blocked out any hope of the sun ever making an appearance. Steve eyed the sky apprehensively as he made his way back to his car, wary of the way the clouds looked as though they might start dropping hail on him at a moment's notice. Billy feigned disinterest as Steve opened the rear passenger door and leaned in to shove the box of things he'd bought at the Hunting & Camping store into the backseat. Even with his vision obscured in part by the sunglasses he'd elected to wear, he didn't miss the strong look of annoyance that graced Steve's features when he came around to the driver's seat and entered the car with a pout.
"That guy give you a hard time or something?" Billy asked as Steve buckled in and put the BMW into reverse, turning in his seat to hastily jerk the car out of the parking lot. "Why do you look like someone shit in your cereal?"
Steve clicked his tongue. "He just kept asking what a 'kid like me' needed with a bunch of chains and rope and shit. My god, he just would not let it go, like he thought I was trying to build my own sex dungeon or something. Fucking annoying."
"You mean that's not what we're doing?" Billy asked, grinning a bit at the way Steve's face pinched up in disgust. "What'd you say?"
"I told him the truth; said it was to tie up a werewolf. 'It's a full moon tonight, y'know? Gotta tie 'em down or they go all crazy on you', I said to him, and you know what he said to me then?" Steve asked, speeding out of the little downtown shopping area Hawkins played host to and sounding every bit as gossipy as Carol did when she caught wind of a scandal.
"How the fuck would I?" Billy drawled, turning away from the conversation to watch the scenery pass by disinterestedly.
"He said, 'Damn fool kids will never learn'," Steve said, ignoring him. "'Damn fool kids will never learn', like, what the hell does that mean?"
Billy shrugged. "Who knows? As long as he accepted daddy's plastic then what does it matter?"
Steve clicked his tongue again in annoyance and rolled his eyes. "Fuck you."
Feeling the beginnings of a headache coming on, Billy declined to retort. They rode on in silence, the chains in the box Steve had bought clinking together softly in the backseat before the radio was finally turned on to mask the sound.
Regardless of whether or not Steve actually believed something was going to happen to Billy that night, he couldn't deny that the whole day leading up to that evening just felt… off. From meeting up with Billy earlier that afternoon to go by the camping store, to grabbing lunch together before heading over to the Henderson's house, it all felt wrong.
It was something Steve had difficulty pinpointing the origins of, but as they began work on clearing out enough space in the cellar for Billy to do whatever it was he thought he was going to do, he soon came to realize that the feeling of wrongness seemed to stem from Billy himself.
Few words could better describe Billy than 'annoying' or 'smart-mouthed', but he'd been uncharacteristically tight-lipped all day. He'd become a remarkably dull version of himself, and Steve wasn't sure quite how to handle that.
Usually one to argue and bite back at everything Steve said, when he'd begun dishing out instructions on how best to clear out some floor space in the cellar, Billy hadn't talked back to him a single time; merely lit a cigarette and blinked at him slowly, silently acknowledging what had been asked of him before getting on with it.
It was unsettling. Steve could almost say that he hated how submissive Billy was because of how used he'd gotten to the back-talk and smart-ass remarks Billy usually had ready for him, and though, yes, there were times he had wished for this kind of attitude from him, the silence and absolute subordination coupled with all of the other behavioral changes Billy was exhibiting were enough to set Steve on edge.
Billy kept tonguing the gaps in his teeth where they'd fallen out over the course of the week, and he never seemed to realize he wasn't alone. Sometimes he'd jump at the sound of Steve's voice, or shake his head and crease his brow in confusion when he turned around to see Steve moving stuff somewhere behind him, but arguably the worst part of it all was that he stank.
He'd tried to mask it with an overabundance of cologne that had nearly suffocated Steve when they began working in closer quarters, but buried beneath that was a hint of something that smelled awfully rotten. If he had to, Steve could liken it to the stench of the monster they'd encountered in the woods, but he chose not to, instead chalking it up to a severe case of nervous b.o. or something. The implications that the scents could be related bothered him too deeply to believe, and even then he wasn't sure he really wanted to know what the source of the smell was.
The stench of decay emanating from Billy's person was worrisome enough on its own, but with so much to do in order to get ready before sunset, Steve had a hard time figuring out where to primarily apply his focus: there were simply too many things going on for him to worry about one thing more than another.
The giant hole in the wall that Dart made to tunnel out of the cellar was his immediate concern, but Dustin had done a good job of hiding it from his mother by placing a tall shelf in front of it, essentially blocking it off. That didn't mean it wasn't entirely inaccessible, but Steve wasn't sure what more he could do about it. In all honesty, he'd forgotten about it until he'd tried to move the shelf aside and then found himself peeking into the eerie tunnel. He'd knocked over several things in his haste to put the shelf back in place, but Billy hadn't seemed to notice it, and if he didn't, maybe he wouldn't think to use it if- or when- he lost himself to whatever supernatural effects he was experiencing.
"Big if, though," Steve muttered aloud to himself. Turning away from the shelf, he looked over to where Billy was inspecting some old power tools, turning a nail gun over in his hands before setting it back in the box he'd pulled it out of. "So, are we good or what? This baby-proofed enough for you?" Steve asked, startling Billy out of whatever ruminations he'd been lost to.
Billy looked at Steve blankly, face impassive and emotionless. He frowned, and then looked around himself as though he'd forgotten where he was. When he spoke, his voice was monotone and devoid of his usual arrogance as he said, "I don't know, Harrington; is it?"
"You tell me, man, this was your idea." Steve watched as Billy returned his focus on the box of tools he'd originally been rummaging through. Picking up a hammer, Billy balanced its weight in his hands before gripping the handle tightly. Steve distrusted the look in Billy's eye as he held it. "What are you, a child? Quit rifling through their shit, put it back," he said.
Billy didn't reply or even acknowledge that he'd heard him. Ignoring Steve's demand, he stepped up to the abandoned work bench to splay his left hand out over the wood and lifted the ballpeen up.
"What the fuck are you doing? Put it down," Steve said again, his voice rising slightly in pitch when he understood what Billy was doing. He started towards him in an effort to stop him, but halted when the hammer was brought crashing down.
It missed his hand, but the force of the impact splintered the wooden table's surface. Steve gaped as Billy turned around, a cocky little smile turning up his lips.
"Someone could get hurt real bad down here if they weren't careful, huh, Harrington?" he said, a fierceness that Steve hated to admit he'd missed charging his voice. "But we've been real careful cleaning this shithole out, haven't we, pally?"
"You sick piece of shit, give me that," Steve snapped, snatching the hammer away from Billy's pliant grip. "Fuck you, Hargrove; you could've just said you wanted to move this shit out of here."
"Had you pegged as being more of a visual learner," Billy sneered as Steve threw the hammer back into the box of tools. "Your concern was touching, though, really."
"You're the one who came asking me for help, fuckface. Begged me, almost, if I'm remembering right. 'Oh, Steve, help me, I'm so scared of fake movie monsters!'"
Steve hadn't meant to rise to the taunt, but Billy's insufferable attitude had him stooping to his level as he hoisted the hefty box of tools in his arms and lugged them over to the stairway. Billy laughed dryly at Steve's mocking tone.
"We both wish that fucking thing had been fake," he said as Steve placed the box on the ground at the foot of the stairs beside the box of supplies he'd bought earlier. They were both quiet for a moment, their attempt at a conversation dying as quickly as it had been brought on.
"Only one thing left to do then," Steve said morosely.
Billy blinked and turned to face the stairway, eyes rising slowly up to where the cellar doors were propped open wide. Steve felt the guilt of having to lock him in prematurely and had to remind himself that he wanted to be locked in.
"Better hop to it then, Harrington," Billy said lowly, lips curling back into a familiar grin, but without all his teeth in place to flesh it out, Steve found the display to be more unsettling than annoying. "Let's get this sex dungeon set up."
Steve grimaced. "Not even in your wildest dreams, Hargrove."
"Nothing's off the table in my dreams, pretty boy." Billy breathed out a small laugh at the disgusted look on Steve's face, but the grin he'd been displaying slowly fell away. "Is it getting dark yet?"
"Uh, kind of, but the sun hasn't set yet," Steve replied, stepping up into the stairwell to check the status of the sky. It was as dull and grey as it had been all day, the overcast weather acting as a harbinger for the snowfall the local meteorologist had foretold was coming. "If you took off those fucking sunglasses you'd be able to tell."
"These are for your benefit as much as mine," Billy snapped, frowning suddenly.
"Yeah, okay, whatever that means," Steve said dismissively as he began to fish out the cords of rope from the box, letting them spool out onto the ground before gathering them into his hands. "How do you uh, how do you want to do this?"
"Aw, is this kitten's first time tying someone up?" Billy purred, not moving from where he stood in the middle of the cellar, directly under the light. "Who knew 'King' Steve's favourite flavor was vanilla."
Steve rolled his eyes as he brought the ropes over, wrinkling his nose at the mixed smell of rot and cologne that got stronger with proximity. "I've dated girls kinkier than you'd know what to do with," he retorted as he gestured for Billy to hold out his hands.
"Oh please," Billy said with a snort, "there are no kinky girls in Hawkins or I would've found them by now."
"You're obviously not looking hard enough," Steve muttered in response, gesturing again for Billy to hold out his hands.
Shrugging out of his leather jacket and tossing it over the work table he'd splintered, Billy held his hands up obediently and watched stoically as Steve wound the rope around his wrists, binding his hands together roughly.
"What's should our safe word be?" Billy teased, smirking as Steve wound another, longer length of rope over the original knot.
"There is no safe word because this isn't a sex thing!" Steve insisted angrily.
Flustered, he sighed irritably as he wound the long part of the rope around Billy's waist, hating how close he had to get in order to make sure the rope was tight enough, though Billy seemed to be enjoying how close he'd gotten. He kept shifting his weight around, trying, it seemed, to get Steve into a more compromising position. Annoyed, but determined to finish, Steve did his best to ignore Billy's constant movement and the disgusting, rotten musk that was wafting off of his person to finish tying him up.
"Why do you fucking stink so goddamn badly?" Steve finally asked with a scowl, repressing the urge to gag as he tied the ropes off into a clumsy knot. He stumbled away from Billy, reaching up to pinch his nostrils shut so he wouldn't have to smell the rot anymore, but the rancid scent seemed to have lodged itself deep into his nose. "You smell like a dead Calvin Klein model or something, holy shit, did you use a whole fucking bottle?"
The amusement Billy had held while taunting Steve left his face. His smirk shrunk into an awkward grimace as he looked away in embarrassment.
"I don't know, alright?" he admitted bitterly. "It doesn't matter how much I bathe, and between that and my eyes I have no idea what the fuck's going on with me."
"What about your eyes?" Steve asked hesitantly, unsure if he really wanted to know the reasoning behind why Billy had insisted on wearing sunglasses all day.
Billy faltered for a moment, hesitating briefly before reaching up and plucking the sunglasses off his face. With both hands bound together, he awkwardly folded the legs against the lenses and tucked them into the collar of his button up. He turned his gaze to Steve, who couldn't help but suck in a slight breath of surprise.
His eyes were so bloodshot they looked ready to start bleeding straight out of the sockets. There were hardly any whites left in the sclera to be seen as Billy winked at him, looking immensely uncomfortable at the way Steve was gaping openly at him.
"Do they- hurt? Or whatever?" Steve asked, unconsciously taking a few steps forward to get a better look. In the dim lighting of the basement, even the blues of Billy's eyes looked reddish.
"What's it to you if they do?" Billy snapped, suddenly irritable. He squared his jaw and looked away, unable to face the amount of concern Steve was showing him.
The worry Steve felt for the both of them in that moment grew stronger as he backed off, letting the matter of the changes in Billy's physicality drop, despite how alarming they were. "If I don't hear anything an hour after the sun goes down, I'll let you out," Steve said abruptly as he walked backwards towards the stairwell, grasping for the hand rail behind him blindly, unsure why he was so reluctant now to let Billy out of his sight. It was what they'd agreed upon earlier, and he said it meaning for it to sound reassuring, but the way Billy's lips twitched made it apparent he didn't interpret it that way.
Billy didn't respond.
"Well, uh, I guess that's it then," Steve said as he bent down, placing his box of chains atop the box of tools Billy had been messing around with before lifting them up together to carry them up and out of their man-made dungeon.
The cellar doors shrieked loudly as they were closed, a high pitched agony that erupted when the metal grinded against itself uncooperatively. Steve didn't mind that so much as he hated the sound the chains made as he wove them through the door handles, reminding him of what he was doing and who he was imprisoning as the steel rattled sharply against the doors. He winced at the commotion, but continued to loop them through the small door handles until no more could be fit between them. He tested their sturdiness by attempting to pull them open, and to his pleasure, they remained shut. The doors were secured; the cellar, as far as he was concerned, was now a suitable prison. All that was left of him now was to play the role of the jailor appropriately.
He stared down at his handiwork for a moment before the cold, blowing winds prompted him to seek shelter. Already a few snowflakes were fluttering out of the sky, flying into his cheeks as he turned away, re-gathering the box of tools in his arms and headed for the door Dustin promised he'd leave a key for.
Searching under the backdoor mat, Steve found the promised key, and true to the rest of Dustin's word, the entire home was empty, save for the cat that chirped a greeting for him from atop the kitchen counter. With a deep intake of breath Steve glanced at his watch, stepped inside, and shut the door behind him, wondering if he really was prepared for the worst. In the trunk of his car his bat waited for him, ready to be put to use just in case shit really did hit the fan, but he found himself questioning if he'd really be able to use it; bludgeoning monsters to death was one thing, but turning it on a boy he knew was only a monster figuratively was something else entirely.
For both his and Billy's sakes, he hoped it wouldn't come to that.
Shrugging out of his thick coat, Steve set it down beside him as he took a seat on the Henderson's couch. He glanced at his watch again, dismayed by the fact that time wasn't progressing as fast as he wished it was and sat in anxious worry about what the rest of the night might have in store.
But at least he was comfortable and warm.
The cellar was not.
It wasn't the cold that Billy minded, so much as it was the anticipation: when would the transformation start? Exactly at sundown? A little before? A little after? Would he actually end up transforming? And why the fuck did the word 'transform' make him so damn uncomfortable? The unknown factors surrounding his circumstances were almost worse than any of the physical symptoms he'd been experiencing as of late, and he'd been experiencing a lot.
Anxiety wasn't something Billy had a lot of experience with, but it was the only thing he could think of that explained why his heart had been beating oddly all day. It was running at a notably higher rate, as though he'd been playing basketball or working out extraneously, and brought on palpitations he wasn't used to dealing with at the elevated speed.
In short he felt terrible. His whole body ached like it was going through puberty again. Both his arms and legs were sore in ways that mimicked the aches that came with growing pains when he'd had them, but he couldn't understand why he would begin to hurt in that way again. He hadn't had the energy to work out in two days despite eating practically anything he could get his hands on, so the soreness in his limbs was unwarranted. Either his body was preparing itself for the coming night, or he was having an incredibly drawn-out heart attack.
Standing at the foot of the stairwell, Billy felt the cold permeating in through the closed opening and moved away to find a better spot to wait. He wanted rub his arms to bring some warmth into them, but couldn't with the way they were bound. Already the ropes were beginning to dig into his wrists, rubbing uncomfortably against his skin as he realized he wasn't actually that cold anyway, despite the frigid weather; his body temperature had been on a steady incline leading up to now, leaving him with a rosy complexion and a near constant fever, the long-term effects of which left him feeling severely disoriented.
He could barely remember meeting up at Steve's house only a few hours ago to carpool to his kid friend's house, riding with the windows down in spite of the severe wind-chill as they went into town to get lunch and buy rope. Even though they'd ridden together, he couldn't remember now if they'd actually talked about anything or not. All he could remember were the low tones of the radio and the resonating throbs of the wind as it swooped in through the open windows, rushing to fill the audial space between them. It was as though his mind had been steeped in a fog, and he couldn't accurately think through it: everything was clouded over, incomprehensible, like waking up the morning after a bender and being unable to remember everything he'd done the night before, but knowing all the same that he'd taken part in some memorable shit.
Would there be pain, he wondered, and would it come on as suddenly as it had to the character in the movie he'd made Steve watch? Even though 'American Werewolf' was just a movie, stories like that had to spawn from some sort of truth, didn't they?
The dim little lightbulb that hung overhead flickered briefly, drawing Billy's attention to it as he took a seat at the work table's bench, wishing his eyes weren't a dry and sore as they were.
Coming from above, he could hear the muffled sounds of a TV show permeating through the cellar's ceiling. He couldn't help but think ill of Steve in that moment, but if their situations had been reversed, he probably would have been doing the same thing; he couldn't fault Harrington for finding a way to pass the time, though he wished he had something similar to do for himself. There was nothing interesting to hold his attention, and time passed at a dreadfully slow rate.
Stretching out on the bench, he laid himself down slowly, mindful of which parts of his back hurt the most, and gazed up at the cement overhead disinterestedly. He listened to the muffled sounds of the distant television, trying to conjure an image in his mind that corresponded with what little dialogue he could hear, but the rapid beating of his heart overpowered the noises coming from the TV. He closed his eyes and focused on his breathing in an attempt to lower his heart rate, but it just kept going, pounding in a determined rhythm that seemed to be quickening with each passing minute. A bead of sweat trickled down from his scalp and over his ear as he wondered if the tingling he felt in the tips of his fingers was because of the cold or from the ropes being tied too tight.
He flexed his fingers, opening and closing his hands into a fist to try and bring sensation back into his fingertips, but to no avail. They remained numb, and the cause of which eluded him.
Frowning, Billy stiffly sat up and began to pinch at his skin, belatedly realizing that the numbness was spreading slowly down the lengths of his fingers, a sensation that sent a chill running down the length of his spine.
"Oh," he said. "Oh shit."
The pain, when he finally did begin to feel it, started in his feet. There were still thirty minutes before the sun went down.
Billy licked his lips nervously as he tried to get his boots off, his numb fingers and bound hands fumbling uselessly with the laces as the pain centralized in his toes and grew in sudden intensity. He was no stranger to pain, but this was unlike anything he'd ever felt before: it was sharp and stabbing, with each throb of pain stemming from the bones in his toes, as though they were growing more pointed in an attempt to pierce their way through his skin as they elongated. He could feel them cracking; each joint slowly popping free of itself as the bones began to push themselves forward.
"Oh, shit," he repeated, and could hear the muffled sounds of a laugh track from whatever sitcom Steve had turned on upstairs roaring in delight as he struggled to finally pull his boots off.
The stabbing sensation didn't relent, even once his shoes lay discarded by his feet. He peeled away his socks with shaking hands and stared down at his toes.
They'd turned a bright, beet red and were bulging like they might burst apart, his skin bubbling up around toenails that were already starting to peel off. He couldn't help the whimper as he tentatively felt them, a pain like touching a freshly popped, skinless blister causing him to draw his fingers back.
It was real. It was happening.
Sweating freely now, he reached away from his feet to brush his dampened hair away from his forehead as sweat rolled down the sides of his face. He paused when he felt his hair pull free from his scalp, clinging to the back of his hand stubbornly. Billy stared at the loose, curly strands with a horrified expression and reached up with a shaking hand to grab more. When he pulled, a handful of his hair came away easily, eliciting another whimper from deep within his throat. Disgusted and frightened, he threw his hair away to the floor.
Breathing quickly, he hastily rubbed his hands free of the loose strands in a panic and tried to calm himself. His whole body trembled as he breathed in deeply through his nose, wondering if he should try to call out to Steve to alert him that the worst case scenario was indeed unfolding. Another laugh track from upstairs came through the ceiling as he felt a sharp, sudden stab of pain in his ribs, prompting him to gasp loudly and curl forward over himself. He could actually feel some part of his ribcage shifting inside his torso as he tucked his arms in to his sides. Any lingering thoughts of trying to remain calm left him as he transitioned from panic to full on fear.
He stood up not knowing what he was going to do, but regretted it instantly: as soon as he put weight on his foot, his ankle collapsed in on itself and brought him to the floor. A shout almost came out with his fall, but he managed to internalize the pain as he was used to doing and grit his teeth as his foot essentially broke itself in half.
The central part of his foot that arched snapped without warning. Billy swore loudly and reached for his foot instinctively, wanting to hold the break in place, but he couldn't bear the agony that came with the contact. Warm tears leaked from his eyes, and when his other lateral arch also split in half, he couldn't help but cry out.
From up above, the noises coming from the television ceased. Steve must have heard him and was listening for him now, trying to gauge whether or not he should intervene. Billy clenched his jaw tighter, determined to keep quiet, but gasped loudly when two of his molars gave out under the pressure, snapping to the side and coming loose of his gumline. The copper taste of blood filled his mouth as he spat the teeth out, shuddering uncontrollably when he felt the vertebrae in his spine begin to pop, one by one, pushing up against his skin that was quickly beginning to feel too tight.
Huffing in great breaths of air, he panted heavily as the bones of his tones finally pierced through his skin, causing most of the flesh surrounding them to burst open like little balloons. Blood splattered across the floor in gruesome, miniature arcs and Billy finally, finally became undone. He shrieked, unable to keep silent any longer as new appendages could be seen inside the flayed bits of bloody skin, slowly growing outward, already a part of him.
Warm tears of pain streaked down his face in thick lines as the skin of his feet continued to be ripped apart, making way for more muscle, new flesh. He wiped at his eyes helplessly and thought he could hear Steve's voice distantly calling out his name, asking if everything was alright.
He blinked, his vision blurred by the tears that would not clear away as he pulled himself over to the stairway.
Shaking wildly all over, Billy stretched out on the floor, realizing belatedly that the waistband of his jeans was growing tighter and tighter. Hissing sharply, he cursed himself for not having the foresight to undress himself as he hastily tried to undo his belt. A pain similar to the initial agony he'd felt in his toes was beginning to manifest itself in his fingers as both of his hands slowly began to turn red, swelling up under the bonds of the rope as he fumbled with the buckle, desperately trying to get it to come free.
"Fuck!" he shouted in frustration, his clothing growing ever tighter as his body continued to bloat. He felt like he was being pinched in half with his belt acting as an unneeded tourniquet. "Fuck! Fuck!"
"Hey! Talk to me Hargrove, what's going on?"
Steve's worried voice trilled down through the cellar doors as he continued vocalizing his frustrations. Billy felt an organ in his abdomen shift out of place before popping, prompting him to groan and curl in on himself before he threw up. His couldn't undo his belt as his vision began to darken.
"Hargrove!" Steve shouted, banging a fist against the steel door. "What the hell's going on? Talk to me!"
"Fuck you!" Billy screamed, unable to articulate anything else as he tried to rub the blackness out of his eyes, but the more he pressed his fingers to them, they more they began to hurt.
A pressure was building up behind them the more he rubbed, and as it increased, his vision grew ever darker. He kept blinking, over and over, feeling his eyes bulge out of their sockets and against his eyelids, trying now to keep his eyeballs in place. He was hyperventilating when he finally went blind, the pressure behind his eyes becoming intolerable eyes before it finally came too much, and his eyes popped free.
He felt them slide out onto over his checks and onto the floor, the slimy, blood-slick nerves leaving tracks of blood on his face as he became totally and completely blind.
"No," he whispered to himself, retching again on the floor as he scrambled across the cement, trying to find the stairs, unable to see. "No, no! This isn't real!"
Beyond the cellar doors, Steve had his ear pressed against the slight crack between the panels, desperately trying to understand what was going on. He wasn't sure what to make of the noises he was hearing, unable to determine if Billy was just trying to mess with him or if he was in actual distress.
"Hargrove," he said impatiently, turning his head to try and peak in through the crack to get a glimpse of what was going on, "you gotta start talking to me, man; what the hell's going on down there?"
"I'm fucking blind," he heard Billy shout, his voice rife with fear. "I can't see anything!"
His voice was shaking as he spoke, and Steve knew then that whatever was happening was legitimate; Billy wasn't one to openly show weakness.
"Okay, stay calm," Steve stammered, but he wasn't sure if that was actually sound advice or not. "It's- it's going to be okay, okay?"
Billy howled, and Steve understood that the pain that carried with his voice must have been terrible to get him to shriek like that. He licked his lips anxiously, not knowing what support he could possibly offer him. He continuously opened and shut his mouth, words of encouragement dying on his tongue before he could manage to speak them.
And then, all at once, the cacophony of agony ceased.
Steve couldn't hear anything over the rapid sound of his breathing for a moment before he finally spoke: "Hargrove? Is… are you okay?"
"Hurts." Billy's voice, quiet, strained, and barely audible over the sounds of things (flesh, fabric) slowly tearing, sounded disconcertingly like he was speaking with a throat full of water. It was gargling and grotesque; completely unlike the smooth, honeyed voice he'd become known for.
"Okay, what, uh, what… what hurts?" Steve whispered in response, fear quieting his previously urgent tone.
"Everything."
"Shit," Steve said to himself, backing away from the cellar door panels as the sounds of something large and heavy being knocked over made him jump. "Just, uh, stay calm," he said, though he wasn't sure if he was saying it to himself or Billy. From down below, he heard Billy groan loudly before going silent again.
Steve's heart was pounding as he hesitated, unsure of what to do. All the details of Billy's haphazardly concocted plan fled his mind as he tried to think back on what they'd agreed to do if something ended up happening, and his first instinct was to open the doors to go down and check on him. He looked at the chains wrapped tightly around the door handles and bit his lip before crouching down and pressing his eye to the crack.
The overhead light wasn't bright enough to reveal much, but at the base of the stairwell there was a small circle of illumination. Steve squinted, ignoring the cold of the steel as he pressed his face against the door, trying to see all that he could.
Blood stains. Torn bits of… something he couldn't quite make out. Dark masses on the stairwell; lots of evidence that pointed towards Billy transforming, but no trace of Billy himself.
"Hargrove," Steve whispered, and then shook his head to clear himself of his cowardice. "Hargrove," he said again, louder and with more emphasis, "dude, you have to talk me through what's happening down there."
He waited, unconsciously holding his breath as he waited for a reply. It was steadily growing darker as the sun slowly sank, making it all the harder to see into the cellar from the tiny slit. Frowning and unable to see anything, Steve turned his head and pressed his ear against the door. From somewhere in the depths of the cellar he could hear something breathing heavily. It was moving, too; he could hear something shuffling, moving around the floor space cautiously.
When he turned his head again to see through the crack, he caught a glimpse of... something large and hulking cross under the light, tall enough to set the lightbulb swinging. He couldn't help but suck in a sharp breath of air, his lungs and throat burning with the sting of the cold weather. The thing- whatever Billy had become- halted just outside the rim of light. Entranced, Steve found he couldn't move as it emitted a low, threatening growl that sounded more like a man impersonating a dog than an actual beast.
From his limited viewpoint, he couldn't see the way the muscles in its legs were tightening, or how it had begun to crouch; he didn't have time to react as it sprang forward, jumping up the stairs in a single leap to ram itself against the doors.
The chains held the doors shut, but the sudden impact smashed the metal against Steve's nose and soon all he could smell was blood as it drained out of his nostrils. He fell backwards, holding his nose as the Billy-creature growled again. Horrified, Steve could only sit in the snow and watch as the doors lurched forward when Billy rammed against them again, trying to escape. The second impact loosened the restraints, and all Steve could do in that moment was watch as they rattled uselessly in place, beginning to slip through the handles as they hadn't been properly locked into place.
Cursing to himself, staggered to his feet and rushed to grab the chains, but as Billy threw his body against the doors again it soon became obvious that even if the doors stayed shut, they were about to pop free of their hinges entirely. Blood dripped down over his lips and onto the metal panels as he tried to think of what he could possibly do to counteract the damage Billy had done. In an act of desperation, he threw himself against the steel and hoped that his added bodyweight would be enough to keep them in place.
If it managed to do anything, he couldn't tell. Almost immediately Billy was throwing himself against the doors again, nearly bucking Steve off.
"Stop!" Steve cried out, grasping for the chains to hold them in place. His fingers scrabbled against the cold steel links even as Billy let out another deep, throaty growl. With the doors as loose as they were, Steve was almost certain the doors wouldn't survive another body-slam. "Give it up, Hargrove!" Steve said again, desperately. "Just- fuck, Billy, stop!"
He braced himself for another impact, but it never came. Eyes closed in anticipation, Steve blinked them open and exhaled shakily, his fingers trembling as he let the chains go. Crystalized air puffed out in front of his face over and over as he rolled off the doors and stood up unsteadily, trying to wipe away the blood that had already frozen over and turned to crust on his upper lip. Somehow, miraculously, his pleading had worked, but before he could take comfort in that fact, other disturbing sounds began to creep back up to him from down below.
Things were being tossed around; the metallic clang of old paint cans being bounced off the floors and walls mixed with the hoarse, angry vocalizations of the creature Billy had become made his blood run colder than the air currently was. The noises Billy was making were at once both animalistic and human, deep and throaty and more akin to the bellows of a moose than a man or wolf.
Steve stood in front of the cellar doors not knowing what to do. Already their plan was falling apart, and he was quickly becoming aware of how vastly unprepared he was to handle the situation. He wanted the security of the bat in his trunk, but didn't trust himself to leave the doors unattended for the length of time it would take him to run back inside and grab his keys to get it, but he felt so weak without it.
Another loud, crashing noise came from within and Steve stilled, listening intently. Faintly, he could hear Billy snuffling about, and after the sun finally completely descended, all was quiet. His nose was throbbing as he stood attentively, but when nothing more could be heard, his stomach sank.
With trembling hands and his mind screaming at him to stop, he knelt by the doors and slowly unwound the chains from the handles. The fact that he couldn't hear anything coming from within didn't sit well with him; he had to make sure Billy was still down there.
He tried to shift the chains as quietly as possible, but with how nervous he was, he had a hard time keeping his hands steady. They rattled noisily against the door, grating on his already frazzled nerves as they slid free. Heart pounding madly, Steve carefully pulled the doors open and took the first step down into the cellar.
It was silent. He couldn't hear anything as he hesitantly took a second step, mentally berating himself over and over for being stupid enough to walk defenseless into the lion's mouth. He had no idea what Billy was capable of now, or if he'd even recognize him enough to (hopefully) have enough sense to not harm him. The lightbulb that dangled freely from the ceiling was swaying, throwing its light around erratically, showing him glimpses of the gore that lined the steps.
Eyes wide, Steve gagged at the sight of the flayed strips of bloodied skin that were splattered near everywhere. He had to avert his eyes as he took another step, making slow progress as he was careful not to step in any of the mess. At the bottom of the stairs he warily peered around the walls, hoping he'd only stuck his head into the lion's mouth figuratively. To his immediate relief, but long-term dismay, there was no trace of Billy to be seen in the space of the cellar.
Exhaling deeply, Steve tried to even out his breathing as he came to stand in the middle of the room, looking around to assess the damage. As the swinging lightbulb steadied, he turned towards where the shelf that was hiding the tunnel had been and found it on the ground, knocked to its side and several feet away from where it had originally been positioned. His shoulders drooped at the realization of Billy's escape.
He went and stood before the opening of the tunnel and felt all hope of remedying the situation vanish. A numbness overtook him as he recognized his responsibilities of keeping Billy captive had changed; he was the only one who knew about Billy's circumstances, and he was the only one who could do anything about it now. Distantly, and much further away then he would've liked, he could hear the muted, labored sounds of Billy's breathing as he escaped confinement through the underground system.
The burden of his responsibilities threatened to overwhelm him in that instant, but instead of letting himself be overtaken by despair, Steve took a deep, steadying breath and rolled his shoulders back. He hesitated for only a minute before he took charge and ran in after him, disregarding his urgent need to turn back and get his bat out of the car. There was no time, he thought; no time to get a weapon, no time to get a flashlight. If Billy was now as the werewolf in the woods was, then he was capable of speeds greater than Steve could muster, and every second mattered. If he lost his trail now, then it would be lost to him entirely. There was no time; he had to go now or he wouldn't go at all.
Alone and unarmed Steve ran, chasing after Billy into the dark, cold tunnel, hoping he would be able to catch him in time, and dreading the repercussions that would come if he couldn't.

Like Me Better//Liam Dunbar
this is my entry of @lovefilledtragedy ‘s writing challenge (finally, i know i’m sorry)!! thank you so much to Audrey for hosting this writing challenge and letting me be apart of it.
check out other submissions to the writing challenge here!
the song i chose was “i like me better” by lauv: you can listen to it here. (it comes into play more at the end, not really the whole thing whoops)
warnings: swearing?? (is that even a warning with me tho)
Y/N POV
Another pack meeting, another night in which I sat quietly beside Mason and tried to block out the rest of the world. Being one of the only humans in the pack was hard, but what was even harder was watching Hayden put her hands all over Liam. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t have a problem with PDA, I have a problem with her.
I’d had a crush on Liam for a few months before he and Hayden started dating, but I kept quiet because she made him happy. That is, until I couldn’t take it anymore. Mason is the only one who knows about my feelings for Liam, and how I feel towards Hayden. Seeing them so happy all the time almost killed me, but when they started fighting I felt even worse. He was one of my best friends and I couldn’t even help him because of my own damn feelings.
I climbed the stairs up to Derek’s loft and with every step closer to the door, I could feel my stomach twist. When I entered, I was relieved to see Mason already there, talking to Lydia on the couch and scanned the room for the rest of the pack. Scott was in deep conversation with Derek, probably discussing why we were all summoned here on a Friday night, while Stiles and Malia were raiding the kitchen for snacks. I brought my gaze back to Mason and Lydia, but before I could greet them, the front door swung open only to reveal a nicely- dressed Liam and a very angry looking Hayden.
“Guess someone had a date tonight” Lydia whispered, as I tried not to laugh. They entered the apartment and all that was heard was the loud tapping of Hayden’s heels against the hard floor. Luckily, the awkward silence was broken shortly thereafter when Derek and Scott started the pack meeting. To be honest, I wasn’t paying much attention, but trying to clear my head and steady my heartbeat. Sitting in a pack of werewolves while trying to avoid emotional confrontation wasn’t exactly easy. I could feel his eyes on me while mine were glued to the wall, but out of my peripheral vision could see Hayden pulling on his arm, forcing his eyes back to Derek. Great, another thing for her to yell at him about later. I couldn’t help as guilt washed over me just before Derek called for a break in the meeting.
As soon as the word “break” left his mouth, Hayden had her hand on Liam’s arm, pulling him to the balcony with her while everyone else splits up to talk. Mason glanced over to me and gave a small smile and a pat on the shoulder before getting up from his spot on the couch. I pulled out my phone and began to aimlessly scroll in an attempt to clear my mind, yet it proved unsuccessful. Just as I was slipping my phone back into my pocket, loud shouting came from the balcony and I didn’t need heightened werewolf hearing to understand what was being said.
“You tell her you’re no longer friends or we’re done Li”.
I could feel the tears welling in my eyes and forced myself to look at him. Even through the glass doors, I could see his face perfectly, and although it was covered with shock, he remained quiet. I glanced over to Hayden, who looked incredibly satisfied with herself before looking back to Liam. His blue eyes met mine and a deep breath released from his chest, no words coming along with it.
Without another thought, I rushed out of my seat and towards the door, letting it slam behind me. The sound of the metal stairs echoed through the corridors as I made my way out of the building, but before I could open the door, a hand grabbed ahold of my arm. I spun around only to see a frantic Mason standing in front of me, slightly out of breath. “Y/N! Where are you going?”.
“Where does it look like Mason? I need to get out of here. Excuse me if I’d like to have a breakdown by myself instead of in front of the whole pack, and I’m sure as hell not giving Hayden the satisfaction of seeing it” I spat back, tearing my arm from him grip. I pushed the door open and the cool autumn air wrapped itself around me as I made my way into the night. My feet slammed against the cold, hard ground and was the only noise to be heard in the darkness.
When the tears stopped falling, and my body became tired, I found myself at the lacrosse field. The empty field at night was almost eerie but the hum of the lights that illuminated the bright green grass gave off a nostalgic vibe. I sat on the cold bleachers and thought of the first time I’d seen Liam play on this field. I’d come to a game with Mason and he introduced us afterwards, and ever since we’d been as close as ever. Another tear slipped from my eye as I quickly wiped it away. I sat there alone for what felt like hours, reminiscing about Liam and I’s friendship. The crunching of leaves brought my attention back to reality and to the field in front of me. He was standing there, in the middle of the field and when I looked up at him, a wave of relief came over his body. I ran my hands underneath my eyes one last time, even though the puffiness due to tears still lingered. I took a deep breath as he walked over and knelt in front of me. Before he could speak, I cut him off: “I can’t do this, I can’t sit by and watch you be with her anymore”. I could feel the tears welling up again and my words getting caught in my throat. I avoided eye contact with him as much as possible and instead focused on the way he held my hands in his. “She’s not good enough for you Liam. You deserve so much better--”.
“We broke up” he said quietly. My head shot up in hopes of meeting his gaze and a sharp breath entered my lungs, but it was his turn to avert his eyes. I leaned forward and brought my right hand to his cheek, “I’m so sorry, Li”.
He shook his head, and I could feel his jaw clench before letting it drop. “Don’t be. I didn’t like who I was when I was with her and I’ve done some things I’m not proud of, but one thing I will never do is lose you”. He brought his baby blue eyes to meet mine and stood up, still holding my hands. He began to walk towards the sidelines of the field, pulling me with him until he stopped and turned back to me. “Do you know what happened in this exact spot?” he asked, my reply being silence and a confused glance. “Right where we’re standing is where we met for the very first time, and a few months later is where I realized I loved you”.
His words made it feel as though all the air had been taken from my lungs. “You what?’’ I asked, voice low and eyes focused on his. “I do. You make me happy, you’ve made me a better person. And you’re the only person I want to be with”.
Damn, I like me better when I'm with you
I like me better when I'm with you
I knew from the first time, I'd stay for a long time 'cause
I like me better when
I like me better when I'm with you
As he spoke the last word, I brought my hand to his cheek and firmly planted my lips to his. In no time, he did the same, and I snaked my other arm around his neck. Our lips moved together in perfect harmony and with such passion. When the kiss finally broke, we both took a few deep breaths before smiling at the other, foreheads pressed together. “I love you too”.
“Good”, he let out with a sigh of relief and a chuckle. “How did you even find me here in the first place?” I asked, but was met with a quiet and frown-faced Liam. “Mason told you didn’t he?”.
“He said you come here when you want to be alone” Liam replied softly, it was sweet he went to Mason. “It looks like I’ll need to find a new spot for future use” I teased, giving him a playful smile.
“Trust me, you won’t need it”.

Monsta X as Werewolves
Pace yourself with the scenarios and reactions okay? But i want to request Monsta X as werewolves, 🐕 since you have a lot of vampires. 🦇
I will, thank you for the concern! This is my first werewolf!au and I LOVE au’s so this was so much fun to write :D I hope you enjoy this and have a lovely day, anon! ~
Shownu:
You were convinced he hated you at first,, He would often stare you down, or avoid you, or leave if you entered a room. As the newest to the group, you often wondered why you were let in when the leader didn’t even like you
Frustrated, you vented your feelings to Minhyuk while you were partnered up for a task. He laughed at your worries; “He doesn’t hate you! It’s actually the opposite - He thinks you’re so beautiful that he can’t stand to be around you!”
With this new info in mind, you start to test Minhyuk’s confession. You showed more skin, would frequently corner Shownu to “ask” him something, often brushing against him
While working with Minhyuk, he vented about you. “I’m loosing my mind! I can’t think straight anymore!” and with a meek voice, Minhyuk admitted that he might have told you about his crush
Now aware of your game, Shownu teased you back
And this back and forth flirtation resulted in a relationship ... after a night of passion
With mating season drawing near, the leader had locked himself away, afraid of loosing all control and taking you on the ground, with everyone around
But knowing his reason, you “visited” him and helped relieve his stress
So yeah,, basically, he’s the pack Dad and you’re the pack Mom (regardless of the gender you identify with)
Wonho:
Kind of a fuckboy but a nice one, does that make sense?? He has a big heart and wants to share it with everyone, male or female, human or werewolf
That’s why it’s no surprise when he ends up in your bed one night, not caring that you were human. What is surprising, however, is when he wakes up to see you gone, a note stuck to his forehead: ‘I’m out. Be gone before I’m back.’ The cold tone cracks his heart. He’s not used to being left, usually being the one to leave
He can’t get you out of his mind so after a few weeks, he tracks you down again
“I’m that good that you sniffed me out again?” you tease but he doesn’t laugh
He looks very serious, stood on your doorstep with a single rose in hand. “That’s not why I came back. I want to know ... Can I take you out to dinner?”
You humour him, more so looking for a casual fling. But Hoseok surprises you that under that handsome man, is the biggest sweetheart you’ve ever met
Although neither of you make it official, you know your hearts belong to each other
Minhyuk:
Not really a werewolf, more of a werepuppy
He’s in charge of easing newbies into the pack and entertaining the kiddies while the adults do work
It was when he was younger, only a teen, that an orphaned wolf was put into his care. You weren’t much younger than him, so the bond never became anything fatherly. And he was too playful to be taken seriously anyway. He was more of like a close best friend, who also happened to be your guardian
Minhyuk took care of you diligently, often bringing you back pretty stones or other things he’d found while hunting. An almost perfect condition wrist watch was one of his greatest finds and you treasured it
So when you got into a fight with a fellow wolf, who smashed it, you saw red. After nearly killing her, Shownu was on bad terms with you. You almost were kicked out of the pack. But when Minhyuk found out why you had flipped, he fought to keep you
And now you were even more indebted to him
Minhyuk felt bad about the incident, often bringing the girl you fought medicine to help her recover. This annoyed you to no end and you often tried to stop him visiting her
“Why??” he asked eventually. “Don’t you want her to live?”
“No,” you admit, the blood rushing to your cheeks. “She broke my second most precious thing and is going to take my most precious thing away.”
“Your second most precious thing is that pocket watch I found you, right? So what’s your most important thing?”
Shyly, you buried your blushing face into his chest. And he grinned from ear to ear
“So cute!! You love me?! Why didn’t you tell me before?! I love you too!”
Kihyun:
Was sent on a task to track down a human. He was told that they held important information about the wolf world that they shouldn’t know
Eventually he found you, working at a bookstore in town. You looked harmless, stacking books, but an order was an order
He kidnapped you as you walked home that night, done with your shift. And interrogated you. Except it wasn’t much of an interrogation. You were terrified, shaking like a leaf; “I don’t know anything! I seen a boy turn into a wolf and that’s it!” Your heart doesn’t falter so he knows it’s the truth
But he can’t let you leave. You didn’t know as much as Shownu thought, but knowing was all it took to warrant an execution. Except he couldn’t; it felt like trying to slaughter a baby lamb
Instead, he brought you pack to the pack. It took months until you felt comfortable around them, having been afraid they might snap and kill you
Kihyun took charge of you, making sure no wolf messed with you, and sometimes breaking rules to make you happy. You weren’t allowed to return home, but he would let you write your family letters to assure them you’re safe and alive
One morning, a female wolf started to pick a fight with you, threatening your life; “If it weren’t for Kihyuns protection, you’d be dead long ago.”
“Why does he protect me?”
“He loves you, dumbass. Luckily for you”
Kihyun bursts in suddenly, scaring her off and wrapping you in a hug: “Are you okay? Did she hurt you?” He scanned your face for any sign of fear, instead he found you smiling. “What’s so funny?”
Reaching up, you press a kiss to his lips; “I love you too, idiot”
Hyungwon:
Your first impression of him was rather negative. As a new pack member, you worked hard to fit in and impress your leader,, yet someone so high up like Hyungwon did nothing but sleep all the time. And if he wasn’t sleeping, he had this bitchy look on his face
It wasn’t until a neighbouring pack tried to start something, that you understood the real Hyungwon
A beta from the rival pack attacked you, both of you in wolf form, and your shoulder was badly injured
Hyungwon snapped that beta’s neck, nursing you back to health, and fussing over the others that were injured. He had a gentle, warm touch as he tended to your injury. And you even seen him sing one of the youngest to sleep, a 9 year old girl that lost her mother in the fight with the rival pack
Once better, you kind of just followed him around?? You wanted to repay him so you would fetch whatever herbs he wanted, or a rabbit if he was hungry, and for his birthday, you bought him the fluffiest pillows you could find
Hyungwon immediately fell for you
One evening, as the sun was setting, you returned to him with a basket of flowers he’d asked you to pick; “What are they for, Wonnie?”
“You’ll see,” he promised, arranging the flowers into a bouquet before handing them to you. “They’re for you. I wanted you to pick the prettiest flowers because my eyes don’t see beauty like yours do. That’s one of the reasons I love you.”
“That’s cute but be honest,, you made me pick them so you wouldn’t have to get out of bed, right??”
*avoiding the q* “So are you free tonight?”
Jooheon:
Either or aggressive or soft, so he can be unpredictable. This is made worse during the full moon or mating season
Usually, newbies to the pack are assigned to keep watch on him, mainly cause no one actually wants to deal with Jooheon when he’s mad or acting clingy and cute
As the newest member, you’re given this job
Only you don’t react like everyone else has
You humour his cute side, scratching behind his ear (just how he likes it) when he’s in wolf form, smiling at his aegyo, bringing him extra food when he’s hungry even tho the other wolves call him chubby but he’s not leave him alone
And you listen when he’s mad or frustrated, helping him control his aggression until after a few months, Jooheon learns how to be calm, even during a full moon
He grows to realize that his aggression was misunderstood sadness; he was lonely, wanting a companion to love him and maybe have a litter with
Although he realizes this, it takes him another long year before he actually confesses. He had been too afraid of loosing you or getting rejected. His pack hated seeing him hold back like that so they eventually pushed him to confess
“Do you, uh, wanna go running in our wolf forms?? I mean, like, not just running. But as a ... date??”
I.M:
Generally in control of himself,, although he hates humans, he never kills one unless they deserve it
Only looses control during mating season
Driven by lust, he breaks away from the pack, searching for someone to ease his carnal hunger
He stumbles upon an omega, you, wandering through the forest alone. You had smelled him coming from miles away, knowing what he was hunting for
You stayed,, wanting to feed your desire too
The morning after, he turns shy and soft. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to be so forceful last night.” Although he knows your bruises will heal quickly, that doesn’t make him feel any less bad
“That’s okay. I like a man who takes control. So do you wanna get breakfast or something?”
Tbh he didn’t know you, but the night before was pretty damn good so hell yeah, let’s get some f*cking eggs and bacon
“My treat,” he offers
