............ i’m starting to worry that all the talk of “trash pandas” and people calling themselves raccoons have unfairly given people the idea that raccoons are safe or docile or easy to handle

like, the original wish to talk of them in more endearing terms was in reaction to the overarching narrative that they’re pests and should be exterminated, but that absolutely DOES NOT mean you should get close to raccoons nor treat them as pets. they are still a dangerous animal that you shouldn’t disturb, much less come within biting distance of a raccoon.

#all the care guide says is 'biomass'#this is in reaction to both the poll going around about fighting a goose or fighting a raccoon #(the goose. you should pick the goose.)#(those ''teeth'' that you see are used to filter out water from their beak)#(they cannot break a human femur with their wings)#(geese are just very good at spooking large animals like us because we are much more dangerous to the goose)#(plus even if we havent domesticated canadian geese we HAVE still domesticated other types of geese and thus #we are familiar with some broadly similar ways to deal with geese regardless)#but also in someone being. surprised that raccoons were banned as pets.#again. raccoons are one of those batshit pets that are terrifying to see being kept as a pet at all.#this isnt even about rabies either (though its absolutely a huge risk factor)#people just WILDLY overestimate their ability to handle mammals #which i kind of blame dogs for #there's a reason aggressive dogs have to be put down and its because the sheer mechanical damage of even #a medium sized dog biting and meaning it #is very very bad and rough #i know someone who lost a finger to a chipmunk and has a scar running down to her elbow #do not touch the wild mammals
