I want to get into pride and prejudice which media from the franchise shld I consume
THANK you for coming to me. p&p is one of my “whiter” interests but the love story is refreshing in how genuine and witty it is.
also ive seen so many gay women absolutely love it ‘cause it isnt inherently heterosexual in a boring or upsetting way. darcy is an interesting man lol
1. the book would be great to read, but even i havent finished it yet, i’ve just read the first 15 chapters like four times over. it slows down a good deal in the middle. the prose is obviously well done and can enrich your appreciation of the story. i would recommend reading it after youve watched a visual adaptation, though, because it might be drier than you like
2. pride and prejudice (2005)- an easy movie to watch, beautifully scored and filmed, a really REALLY great take on the dynamic between lizzie and darcy, well-suited to modern tastes. it has gorgeous scenes. keira knightley is in it, and she definitely made me gay the first time i saw pirates of the caribbean, just watch it
3. the bbc series (1995)- not as razzle dazzle as 2005 but EVEN MORE WITTY if you could stand it. a huge theme in p&p is secondhand embarrassment and boy can you see it. lizzie is less spritely here but far more smug and smirky, and also she wears bonnets, hilariously. darcy and lizzies actors are also hooking up during production so the chemistry is there !!
4. bridget jones diary (2001)- pride and prejudice except in 90s london and a white “chick flick.” it has a bunch of weird moments that are characteristic to the genre (i can elaborate on those later) but is otherwise hilarious primarily because darcy is played yet again by colin firth. i mean, really
as for why the themes of p&p are compelling, gothhabiba made a far more comprehensive post, but it has some spoilers, so to spare you: darcy is at best entitled and at worst misogynistic in his initial courtship of elizabeth, who is an agentive and bitingly intelligent character unto her own. their relationship grows out of darcys transformation into a better human being who is willing to make sacrifices and put legitimate work into his relationship (a rare sight from a man even in the best romantic straight media). hijinks ensue
