What would you want from a new F-Zero? Personally the only gameplay things I can think of are more vehicle customization, death race (F-Zero X) and an easier difficulty?
Non gameplay, I suppose the integration of the various anime original characters into the game universe?
Those gameplay additions sound good! I know that the difficulty is part of what "makes F-Zero" for some people but as someone who is both bad at racing and studying accessibility in video games and game design, I would really love for there to be ways for less skilled players to enjoy as well (looking at you, GX story mode).
As much as I love and adore the anime characters I'm not sure I personally would want them to be merged into the game universe. I don't really talk about it much because I'm afraid it will come off as judgey or gatekeeping when that is the opposite of what I want to convey but I am happy with their current status as characters in an alternate universe timeline and I think introducing them into the main games would make more people mix up the anime and game timelines/characters, like more than they already do lol. I personally like keeping the verses separate but I think it's interesting when people think up ways to make the two universes work with each other.
Other than that I would really love another story mode, I know there's mixed feelings on GX's campy story and whether it even actually happened (stares at Black Shadow's pilot vid) but I LOVE campy cheesy goodness and beyond that, the implications of certain things that happened in the story such as Falcon uhhhhh gaining the power to reshape the universe (like. Hello????) are so fun to dig into. Sure the story wasn't a cinematic masterpiece of plot but the open ends mean it's Free Real Estate for fic and meta 🥳🤲 So a new story would be fun to see, whether it's serious or not. Or even just new snippets of pilot screentime like the interviews were because the pilots are what keep me in a chokehold here 👯

Roleplay Starter Call for Yugioh OC Miyuki!
Tumblr media
Miyuki is my Yugioh OC who duels with an angelic fairy deck based around Sanctuary in the Sky. She has a GX verse where she is a student at Duel Academy. She is kind hearted, sweet, sympathetic, a bit timid and also quite naive and gullible. Also has the duel spirit of Happy Lover!
I don’t mind doing an outside Yu-Gi-Oh rp with her or even fandomless or crossovers or a different Yugioh. I would also be highly up to doing AUs like a Guardian Angel AU, Princess or even magical girl. :D
Like or reblog this post if you are interested in being tagged in a roleplay starter with her. =D

"So, are you some kind of really powerful duelist or something?"
     || unprompted || @chazzedup
Tumblr media
“Tsk… I should tear out your soul for not knowing the ANSWER to that question,” Spoken so casually, the shadow leaning against the wall, “Of course I am~”     A foot presses against the wall before pushing him to a standing position. Slowly, METICULOUSLY, Marik approaches, “A GREAT duelist such as yourself should know about the Battle City Tournament–such an EPIC to be told!” His gaze rises, grinning as a tanned hand is waved, “Battle of the most POWERFUL cards in all duel monsters! Keh heh…”     Marik begins to circle around the other, a SHARP stare piercing the soul, “You should know of the Egyptian God Cards: Obelisk the Tormenter, Slifer the Sky Dragon and–the best and most powerful out of them, of course–The Winged Dragon of Ra… I’ve heard that little ACADEMY has used them for whatever those factions are called.” Why bother learning what they are called? Not like it has any use to him.     He snickers, “Litlle Kaiba seems to be still so arrogant to make OBELISK the best despite how WEAK it is compared to Ra.” The predatory circle stops, the shadow of a man lingering behind.
Tumblr media
“Hmmm~ I’m losing track,” Marik muses, “Where was I…? Ah yes, the Battle City Tournament. You’re looking at the one who was the runner up–” His voice lowers to an angry mumble, a DANGEROUS growl slipping out, “–the winner if not for the weakness of that fool Malik–” then raises his voice back to normal, “–barely defeated by Yugi Muto.”     Giving a sharp grin, Marik chuckles, “I am Marik Ishtar, the TRUE wielder of The Winged Dragon of Ra. Strong enough to put any of the duelists you know to SHAME~”

Hi guys I’m a literate rper and I’m searching for a fandom rp!
I am a 25 year old female and would prefer to rp with someone over the age of 20. That’s just a personal preference of mine. I do not rp super mature things, meaning smut will be at a minimum. I do not mind darker things but I don’t want the rp to become a porno or a murderous blood bath.
My rules are pretty lax, I do try to respond quickly but I understand that everyone has a life. I work full time and also am going to school as well. I do try to respond at least once a day if not more. I tend to write a 3-5 paragraphs depending on if I have something to work with. I can write more or less depending on the rp.
As far as roleplays go I do prefer oc x cannon. I will double up for you too. Im open to all types of pairings, bxb bxg gxg and non binary pairings are all welcome. Im also open to poly pairings as well if you have more than one favorite that you can’t decide between.
I can play anyone from the following fandoms for you as I know them pretty well.
Tmnt (bayverse or 2003)
Transformers (bayverse, animated, prime)
Yugioh (original or gx)
Walking dead
Mass effect (1 2 3 or andromeda)
Dragon age (2 or inquisition)
Critical role (campaign 1)
Marvel (movie verse)
Dc (movie verse)
Lord of the rings
The hobbit
I have discord and WhatsApp! Please comment or dm me if interested

Fanfic Writer Interview
tagged me! Took me a while, but here we go! Anyone else who wants to try is more than welcome.
How many works do you have on AO3?
Currently 783. But with September about to start, that's about to jump up.
What's your total AO3 word count?
At the moment 2,668,538. AGain, that's going up starting in September. Also, I have a metric ton I haven't yet posted there from ffnet. I should really get on with getting all of my fics on AO3, tumblr, and Dreamwidth.
How many fandoms have you written for and what are they?
That's a bit tricky becaue of how AO3 classifies fandoms. So let's break this down.
Digital Monsters X-Evolution
Pokemon (crossover with Zexal)
Kingdom Hearts
Harry Potter
Rise of the Guardians
Digimon Savers
Digimon NEXT
Digimon TRI
Mighty Morphin Power RAngers
Digimon Applimonsters
Power Rangers Turbo
Power Rangers
Yu-Gi-Oh 5Ds
Digimon Xros Wars
Yu-Gi-Oh VRAINS
Binan Koukou Chikyuu Boubei LOVE!
Digimon Tamers
Yu-Gi-Oh
Digimon Adventure
Digimon Frontier
Yu-Gi-Oh Arc-V
Yu-Gi-Oh Zexal
Digimon Adventure 02
Yu-Gi-Oh GX
And then there's one Power Rangers fic of mine that spans a good many years and thus counts as three and more subfandoms of Power RAngers. So, the answer is somewhere between twenty-four and twenty-seven.
What are your top five fics by kudos?
Let's see:
Winding Down: Digimon Adventure 02
Lying Hearts: Digimon Adventure 02
Children of the Shadows: Digimon Frontier/YGO GX crossover
Give Me You: Digimon Adventure 02
Silent Contentment: Digimon Adventure 02
Do you respond to commets, why or why not?
I do my very best, even if it's just a thank you. I like knowing that people like what I write. If I didn't want people to like what I write, I wouldn't put it where it can be seen.
What's the fic you've written with the angstiest ending?
I have to choose? Uh... Reversal (GX) doesn't have a lot of happy endings. Reign of the Undead King (Digimon, 02) had a little hope but it wasn't a flawless happy ending. I'm bad with getting things to end so that's hard to say. Readers, what do you think? Which fic of mine has the angstiest endnig?
Do you write crossovers? If so, what's the craziest one you've ever written?
Yes, I do write them. In truth, the one that I think is gonna be the strangest/etc one hasn't been written yet. But it exists in my head and in my heart: the sequel to Prey and Hunters (which I need to rewrite to get to the crossover portion). For those unaware, Prey & Hunters is my original "Yuuri torments Shun for an extended period of time" fic. The crossover part comes when the god Vesta is pulled through an interdimensional rift and finds himself in the world of Arc-V. He's from SilvorMoon's Binan Koukou Chikyuu Boubei LOVE!'s AU (That I am godparent to), and is the god of love. He is not happy to find Shun being kept and tormented. And now I'm gong to shut up before I spoil any readers who might be interested.
Have you ever received hate on a fic?
A few, way back in the early days. I think the fact I've never actually cared beyond laughing whenever someone tries to insult me or my writing helped it taper off.
Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
Oh, I write very light smut, mostly Kaiser x Daisuke or Juudai x Johan, though other ones do creep in on occasion (I have alluded to Thing Happening between Fallen Angel Desire and Marufuji Ryou in my Reversal AU). I try to stay light because I also post on ffnet and many of us know what that's like.
Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not that I can recall.
Have you ever had a fic translated?
I have been asked, but I don't remember ever seeing it. But I don't look for fics in languages I can't speak/read (and all I can speak/read is English).
What's your all time favorite ship?
A firm tie between Yubel x Juudai and Ken x Daisuke.
What's a WIP that you want to finish but don't think you ever will?
Probably a lot of my Power Rangers ones. I'm not as into that as I used to be so the ideas are quietly gathering dust.
What are your writing strengths?
Apparently I write very good angst?
What are your writing weaknesses?
Being able to write a satisfactory ending.
What are your thoughts on writing dialoge in other languages in a fic?
As I said, I only read/write/speak English, so that's not something I am inclined to do. I would generally just allude to the fact people are speaking different languages instead of writing it out. I'd rather not make mistakes.
What was the first fandom you wrote for?
I think Power Rangers. That was a very long time ago.
What's your favorite fic that you've written?
I love just about all of my fics! But I really love writing breeds-verse and Reversal (and Hell's Ice and wingfic and Shadow Demons and ...)
Well, that was fun!

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀about.
GENERAL:
this depiction of judai will default to post ━ gx! but, during plotting, if you’d prefer a different timeline such as a particular season of the anime (or his depiction in the manga) that can be discussed. i’ll be adding some verses as soon as i can get around to writing them out: if there’s a verses tab on my main page when you read this, then i’ve already done so.
in my writing, i’ll be using the japanese names for all of the characters ( unless your portrayal is using one of the american dub names, in which case i’ll refer to them by that name ) and i’d prefer that he not be referred to as jaden during interactions. it’s not a huge deal, but the characterization differs so greatly between the two iterations that i basically separate them entirely, and i suppose it’s a little bit of a pet peeve.
SHIPPING:
i have a preference for canon characters, but am definitely willing to write something romantic in nature with an original character if our writing meshes well together and the two characters mesh well enough. please ask if you are interested in writing a ship with me.
as for canon characters i really enjoy like all of the notable ships involving judai and am more than willing to write any of them. with that said, i’ll note the few that i’m particularly interested in.
spiritshipping ( judai / johan ) fianceshipping ( judai / asuka )   soulshipping ( judai / yubel )
GUIDELINES / RULES:
no godmodding.
don’t force a ship; if you’re interested in writing something of that nature, please ask first  ━  i’ll probably say yes anyhow.
patience would be appreciated: i can be a bit slow with replies. i won’t ignore anyone, i just have adhd and part of that is executive dysfunction which kind of kicks my ass.
if i’ve left anything vague and you’re curious, feel free to message me and ask about it!

RP PLOTTING CHEAT SHEET
(originally created by hatsudenki)
Repost don’t reblog
Tumblr media
Mun name: Vani (IDC how you guys will address me by)
OOC Contact: Tumblr IMs, Disco.rd (mutuals only)
Who the heck is my muse anyway:
Seto Kaiba is the CEO of Kaiba corporation, a world renowned softwares and games development company. They are one of the main partners and investors of Industrial illusions, the company responsible for the creation of duel monsters (they are also known for their theme parks in Japan and the USA, and later [GX] they own the duelists academy). Kaiba is also amongst the top duelits known in the world, Yugi is the only one who stands above him- no one else comes close to rivaling him.
Priest Set is one of the six priests that compose, Atem’s court in Ancient Egypt (and in the afterlife). He was the original wielder of the millennium rod, and carried the duties of extracting prisoners kas and execute them. He was also a phenomenal war strategist, and a powerful magician (who was only ever defeated by Atem. No one else rivaled him, in those skills). He fought against Zorc, alongside his colleagues and pharaoh, and came out as the sole survivor of that previous court. He became the new pharaoh, after Atem’s death (since it was revealed to him that he was Aknadin’s son, so they were related.). Set reigned over the Egyptian empire, and went down in history as a tyrant and merciless pharaoh in Egypt’s history.
Points of interest:
Kaiba can be recognized at about anywhere he goes. He is a very prominent, public figure. At some point, any muse is bound to have at least seen or heard something involving the name Kaiba. Don’t let those commercials and interviews fool you, Kaiba is a difficult person to be around in person.
Besides my AU, where Set shows up in the modern world. Interactions will either take place in AE or in the afterlife. In AE, it can be during his time as a priest, or when he is the pharaoh. Meanwhile in the afterlife, his soul is bound to serve his king. When Set is in the modern world, he is sharing his mind (not the body) with Kaiba, so he knows his way around as well as everything that happened during DM’s events.
What they’ve been up to recently:
It depends on the verse.
For standard Kaiba’s interactions are all set in his present time verse, 4 years post-DM. He has long since quit the professional dueling scene (after being defeated by Yugi in his BC 2.0 tournament, that takes place after Atem’s departure), so he has only been focusing on his company - and his brother (who is already studying abroad). Kaiba has also cut all ties and contact with Yugi & co, the last time he saw them was in their HS graduation. Currently, he is working on his duelists academy project, he has just bought the establishment and is making huge investments on it. He is often traveling abroad for business reasons, and is rarely seen around Domino city.
As a priest: Set is serving the royal court, he is an important and prominent figure within it. Because of that, his days are extremely busy. He can be often found being mentored by Aknadin, or in the company of other priests. On the rare occasion, it is possible to run into him while out hunting wild animals.
As a pharaoh: Set took over the throne after Atem’s death, and is currently trying to repair and rebuild the empire after all the damages and destruction caused by Zorc. Things are still very fresh and recent, on top of that the former priest is now trying to adjust to his life as the king of Egypt.
In the afterlife: Set’s soul made into his pharaoh’s after his death, in the mortal realm. He is finally reunited with his colleagues, but Atem is still nowhere to be found. As such, he alongside with everyone else waits patiently for their king’s return. Things will return to normal, once he makes it into it.
Modern AU: Set has been granted the chance to meet, the one that was meant to be his vessel. However, things have been less than stellar to him. And ever since he came across Kaiba, he has been kept inside of Kaiba estate. He isn’t allowed out of it, in order to avoid people mistaking him by his vessel.
Where to find them:
Kaiba is... All over the place really, although bars and nightclubs might be the better places to find him. Otherwise, he mostly stays in his company’s building or in his mansion.
Just look above for Set, it depends on the time period- when things are meant to happen. But during Ae, he doesn’t really leave the palace that much and in the modern AU he is stcuk in Kaiba’s place.
Current plans:
// I don’t have any? Not in the sense of making something, that would involve other muns muses. I’ll just keep working on my HCs, and hopefully write a few drabbles I have been meaning to get to for awhile.
Desired interactions:
// I would love to have more things taking place during AE for Set, or finally get to write something during the afterlife.
For Kaiba, I’m actually interested in some pre-DM stuff, so during school shenanigans? (At a time where they were all simply classmates, and nothing else) Or even much later into the timeline, during or post-GX.
Offered interactions:
I have many AUs to offer!
My biggest AU atm is my Yami!Set AU! All of these are open for interactions, and plotting!
I offer anything from pre-DM stuff, things taking place during the series events, post DM and even GX stuff for Kaiba!
For Set, it is a similar thing, albeit during AE and in the afterlife.
Current open post/s:
I don’t do any opens, unless it is for a current dash shenanigan sorry.
Anything else?:
Please be mindful about the continuity & canon sources, I use for my muses. All of them are being based off the anime, I don’t follow at all the manga nor take season 0 into consideration. I also ignore all the movies, and games for my interpretations.
I don’t expect my portrayals/takes on the characters to be everyone’s cup of tea. I’m bound to touch on certain subjects that might be upsetting for certain users, so please take care of yourself and know your limits.
I haven’t watched everything related to YGO. I’m the most familiar with DM and GX, I still have to catch up with everything that came afterwards.
Anyone looking to ship with me. These are the ones I refuse to rp: mirror (Noah/Seto), tabloid (Mokuba/Seto), Puppy/violet (Jounouchi/Seto) and corrupt (TK Bakura/Set).
I want to remind you all that, any and all HCs that mention a character’s name. Will never be applied nor enforced, upon anyone’s muses!
I can rp on disc.ord as well, if that’s easier for you!
Please don’t let these things intimidate you! I look forward to talk & discuss with you!

1, 5, 6, 10, 17, 19, 22, 23, and 34 for the yugioh meme?
1)  Favourite Yu-Gi-Oh! series
This is like asking me which out of my six children should survive while the other five die XD. I love all the series since they all have both pros and cons, and they all have interesting characters and stories, but I guess ARC V will always have a special place in my heart since it got me back in Yugioh fandom (I stopped after 5Ds for a while several years ago). VRAINS is currently my favourite series plotwise since it continues to surprise me and keeps me hyped every single week.
5)  Favourite opening/ending
For the opening, it’s a tie between second and fifth ARC V opening. “Burn” has an incredibly upbeat melody that makes me smile every time I listen to it. “Light of Hope” on the other hand tells a story of how there is despair but smiles will be there to make it go away. I’m rather torn between choosing either of them since they are both really nice endings. As for ending - “Close to You”, 4th ending from 5Ds. I first started watching 5Ds in English dub but once I caught up with it, I was too curious what is going to happen next so I started watching Japanese dub from that point on and that was probably the smartest decision ever. I got to see “Close to You” not only as the first Yugioh Japanese ending but the very first anime ending ever. I loved every single moment of it, of all the characters just chilling around the city, then meeting up, watching the sunrise and then riding D-Wheels with their dragons! It is an ending that is beyond perfect and really emphasises the bonds and friendship between all Signers.
Tumblr media
6)  Favourite character
Tumblr media
If you had asked me this question before Takeru showed up, I would’ve probably blurted out the names of several characters and say how I love them all, but Takeru is a special case. You see, he is a character that I loved before he even officially appeared XD. I’m following the news, cast lists and summaries, so when Takeru showed up for the first time in an anime magazine (like a month before his official anime appearance), I fell in love with everything about him. Both his human self and avatar had all the right colours and designs that fit his personality well, his backstory was intriguing, I was already looking forward to seeing another Lost Child and out of all possible voices, he got to be voiced by one and only Kaji Yuuki (who is among my Top 3 anime voice actors!). Then he showed up in the new opening and ending and him being friendly and cosy with Yusaku was just plain adorable! I had no idea what his role was going to be but from that point it was clear - Yusaku is getting a new friend! And was his entrance perfect - lightning, fire tornado and then him! 10/10 Burner of Souls! Not only was he righteously hyped up, but he also continues to be amazing and I have a feeling his character will get even more development!
10)  Favourite Duel Monster
Tumblr media
It’s hard to pick a single monster, but I love every single card in Johan’s deck aka. Crystal/Gem Beast archetype. The designs are simple but so well executed and out of all of them, it’s hard to pick just one. I love their story, the legend and just the fact how much they all care about Johan, trying to reach out to him when Yubel possessed him. A big plus is also the fact how much personality they all have and they are always there to help up Johan.
17)  Have you ever cried over YGO and why?
You should’ve rather ask me when I didn’t lol. But yeah in every spinoff there was a moment that I actually cried. In original series there were two moments, when Yugi duelled Atem in the fourth season, letting him defeat him and then fading away in his arms and the Ceremonial duel when Yugi stumbled on his knees and cried, I cried with him cuz I also didn’t want Atem to go. Then in GX, it was basically whenever Judai would show vulnerability, cuz really, I hated his guts and his goofy overpowered persona. But then when he lost Johan, when he was afraid of Yubel, when he succumbed to the power of Supreme King and the entire season 4 when he was battling with depression - to see someone so cheerful becoming a mere shell of himself was so darn sad. 5Ds started darker but nothing could prepare me for two scenes, Yusei nearly dying, being afraid to duel and then watching his friend die in his arms and then losing another friend for real (Bruno! :’( ). Zexal made me cry a weird mixture of happy and sad tears whenever Yuma and Astral did something. When Astral sacrificed himself for Yuma I don’t know when I cried more - when Yuma watched Astral die or Yuma suffering from major depression for the next few episodes. But that scene when he got reunited with Astral was that more powerful because of it and their relationship is truly the purest of them all. ARC V, spinoff all about smiles was probably one of the saddest series, not just because of many sad moments throughout the whole thing aka. Yuto dying in Yuya’s arms for real, Yugo losing Rin, Yuya losing Yuzu, the fate of other Bracelet Girls and Yu-Boys and the overall ending, but also how inconclusive the ending felt. I kinda get the point was to show the realism of war, how not everyone can get a happy ending but it could still be executed better. Then there’s VRAINS…. *sighs* where do I even start with this….
Tumblr media
VRAINS truly took the plotline seriously and doesn’t seem like it’s going to back down. It is like the writing staff put together a medley of the saddest moments in Yu-Gi-Oh! and were like, “Let’s make it sadder!”. From the fact that mere six-year-old children were tortured so badly, that Ryoken was so messed up by his father, that all Lost Children are still suffering in one way or another, that SOL practically killed a living being and all the drama that it’s going on between Yusaku and Kusanagi right now. Last week’s episode had me nearly tear up and for tomorrow I will most definitely cry. It’s just so painful to see someone so desperate to save their own family, to attack someone they were all set to protect just a few episodes ago… And VRAINS isn’t even over yet. I thought nothing could top Earth’s death scene, but from the looks of it, tomorrow will be getting a dose of the most painful feels.
19)  Least favourite series
It’s a tie between GX and the first series if I had to choose one. GX has a rather monotone first half when there is some stuff going on, but it’s really episodic and easily forgotten. While there were some interesting episodes, the rest was just one giant filler that tried to deliver too much nostalgia from the first series instead of developing on its own. And speaking of the first series - I know the card game wasn’t as developed at the time so tons of duels made absolutely no sense. Then it was only Yugi, Kaiba and Joey having the development and extremely long duels that were starting to feel off and annoying to watch. But overall - I know that was the very first series and the spinoff, so it was obvious it wouldn’t be perfect. What I truly love about Yu-Gi-Oh! is that it’s a franchise that continues to grow with every single spin-off, even if they’re becoming less relevant they are still getting stronger storywise.
22)  Least favourite character
Tumblr media
This little brat is a perfect representation of how to create the most annoying character. Everything about him screams “annoying, useless and awful”. It would be completely fine if he was an episodic villain, but noooo for some reason writing staff was like, “hey let’s make this dude into Yuma’s friend”. I get it, Yuma can make friends easily, but for the love of God, why him?! Yuma has enough friends already, why bring this brat into his group? Tokunosuke has literally no purpose to be here but to cause trouble or be a plot device to bring Yuma trouble. Okay, I was fine with that one time that he got Yuma into trouble and Yuma still forgave him, but why the hell did they have a need to repeat that three more times? I feel the same way about Kotori - she has no basic purpose but to be moral support or act as a damsel in distress.ZEXAL had way too many characters and out of them all, they picked the most useless ones for major roles.
23)  NOTP
Tumblr media
Canon datastormshipping. I think I made it clear why I dislike it in two posts already, but I guess I could sum it up for the third time. In canon verse they are two unstable people who bring out the worst of each other. They rarely interact, their ideologies are vastly different and they are in a way obsessed with each other in a very unhealthy way. If the two of them dated it would most likely result in a very toxic relationship which would only worsen up their already broken mental states. Again, I greatly dislike this ship in canon verse (in anime up to episode 92) and my opinion could change by the end of VRAINS. I still like the fanfics and fanarts that depict “what if” scenarios where their relationship could work (I’m actually writing one at the moment and I have plans to write one where I focus on their relationship in detail), but canon shipping just feels off and dysfunctional.
34)  If you met Kazuki Takahashi, what would you say to him?
First of all, I would thank him for coming up with those amazing characters and plotlines. I still love the original manga and season 0 the most since it had so much creativity with different games, but I can see it keep getting included more with new summoning methods and unique stories. Then I would most likely present him my idea for the 7th series and its protagonist. From the start of the series, there wasn’t much about card game production or who designs them. We got some info on how Pegasus discovered Millenium Items and the tablet with Egyptian Gods and in GX it showed Hayato working as a card game designer. I would love to see a protagonist who loves games just like Yugi and wishes to create more, so he strives to become the best card game designer. He is not that keen on playing the game since he prefers to make the cards more, but when he creates a particular card(kinda like how Takato created Guilmon in Digimon Tamers) he is pulled into an adventure where he must find other cards that contain powerful Duel Monsters spirits and he has to lock them back into their cards. I would also love to have a protagonist that can talk with spirits again since while Judai had adorable interactions with Winged Kuriboh and Neo Spacians, it was still largely brushed aside and not that much explored. So yeah please make the next protagonist into a card game designer, it will be unique and open to so many interesting plotlines and potentials.

Can we talk about how out of everyone in GX Asuka didn’t really get an arc?
Like in Season 1 her main motivation was finding Fubuki and after that, she really didn’t do much? All her episodes include some asshole (and jun) trying to force her into some sort of relationship or marriage through a duel.
Which apparently is pretty damn common in the Yugioh verse to be able to make someone be your bf/gf or even get married if they lose in a duel (wtf??).
She got one episode that was somewhat good in the beast arc when she had her own duel to recover Fubuki’s memories but aside from that Asuka was severely under-examined and appreciated in the series.
I get it she’s the token girl so girls would be interested in watching the show alongside all her pretty skater and dance monsters but It just bugs me. She could have had so much more damn potential.
AND DON’T EVEN GET ME STARTED ON THAT DUMB ASS “LOVE” STORY WITH JUDAI THEY NEVER TOOK ANYWHERE.

ooh i ask 4, 5 (but all stories not just multi-chapter), 6, 17, 18, 28, 29, 30, 48, and 49!!
4) What is your favourite genre to write for?
Canon verse, followed very closely by fantasy. That’s why I love VLD so much, its a beautiful blend of sci-fi/fantasy but yet also modern and found family.
5) If you had to choose a favourite out of all of your multi chaptered stories, which would it be and why?
I think it still might be Frostbite. I think partly because it was born out of another person’s headcanons (who sadly isn’t on the site, or Ao3 anymore) and I just really enjoy playing in other people’s sandboxes (i mean, i write fanfic so that’s given) but I really like the challenge of taking all these set conditions and making them work together. It’s my favorite kind of prompt. Also it has a lot of elements that just worked really well together. There’s action, softness, enemies but kinda friends and wanting to be lovers, tension, teasing, I was just able to fit a lot of things I loved into it and it flowed really nicely. It didn’t feel incomplete, but was definitely a snapshot of a larger picture.
6) If you had to delete one of your stories and never speak of it again, which would it be and why?
How about that very first fic I ever wrote? The Pokemon/DBZ crossover? I’m not even going to link it. Although honestly I just laugh at it now.
17) Post a line from a WIP that you’re working on.
Pidge’s heart raced, and it wasn’t because she was in the heat of an intense pokemon battle. The last time she’d been this nervous before the doors of the Varadero City Gym, she’d been a bright-eyed ten-year-old challenging for her first badge.
18) Do you have any abandoned WIP’s? What made you abandon them?
This was a popular question! Hmm, I had a Yu-Gi-Oh OC that I wrote part of a fic for, and my intention was to seamlessly tie her into canon as sort of a background player in the original series and then a more active player in GX (she’s Atem’s little sis and doesn’t like the card game because I adore irony and I really enjoyed the Egyptian mystery around the show, she was to be to Jaden was Atem was to Yugi - which added a whole can of worms that I still find hilarious). I still love her story as a whole (even if its not as feasible as I once thought), but I fell out of interest to write it. I still read over the bits I wrote every now and then.
28) What is something you wished you’d known before you started posting fanfiction?
I wish I had known that the shorter fic, the drabbles and ficlets - the ones that start right at the good parts, those are great to share! I feel like I could have offered so much more in my college days if I had realized that not everything had to be a well fleshed out epic.
29) Do you have a story that you feel doesn’t get as much love as you’d like?
I kind of thought Between Rocks and a Hard Place would get more love when I first posted it. Its got canon verse Plance confession, couple in peril, Lance being all sacrificial, hurt Pidge. I totally thought it would be a hit.
I also thought SBE would be too, since its mermaid Pidge and pirate Lance. I thought the fandom was totally into the mermaid thing.
30) In contrast to 29 is there a story which gets lots of love which you kinda eye roll at?
Exsanguination was my first long Plance fic, and while I still enjoy it I look back and think ‘wow, this made sense to people’?
48) What’s your favourite trope to write?
Kidnapped. Enemies to Friends to Lovers. Established Relationship. I’ve managed to do all three at the same time in Crystal Clear. Frostbite is also that, just exchange Established Relationship with School Crush and same with Power Up!. Exsanguination is the soulmate version. Wrong Diamond is the gentleman thief version (with prequel of how they met). SBE also has 2/3 since they’ve only just met.
49) Can you remember the first fic you read? What was it about?
It was a Gundam Wing fic. I can’t even remember the name but I still bust into giggles thinking about it. So there’s an episode where Duo (one of the pilots) is working in the salvage yard with his girlfriend (enemies to friends to lovers btw) and he says something about wanting a nice juicy steak when he’s done.
Well, he never gets the steak because he gets kidnapped a little later on to become a test pilot for the ZERO system. So this fic is post series and Duo is finally about to get his steak (he’d forgotten about it but Hilde is that amazing) except that all these ridiculous things keep happening that prevent him from eating it, the steak getting run over by a truck the least of them. I’m pretty sure everyone makes a cameo and I remember I just could not stop laughing.

I hate to be that person but I'm on mobile and the link didn't work. Sorry.
dhjlgfajfghd that’s fair, lemme copypaste it onto a post
   General Info
Jun’s characterisation on this blog may be influenced by my own headcanons. You don’t have to agree with them and I won’t hold it against you if you don’t, but please, don’t be rude about it. I’m sure there’s a lot of other Jun blogs out there that more closely resemble what you’re looking for.
This blog is independent, multiverse/multiship and non-exclusive. Despite it being non-private, I may be selective in who I roleplay with.
I accept magic anons. The current m!a status is displayed in the sidebar.I use rpthreadtracker to track threads.I don’t have xkit.My timezone is CET and activity will most likely reflect that.
Please note that this is a side blog. If I follow, send asks, or like or comment on posts, it’ll have to be from my hub: viomuses.
An Important Note on Mental Health
I don’t follow a lot of people because I have really bad anxiety around following (ask me about this if you want to know more), so it’s unlikely that I’ll follow you unless we’re really close friends and/or regular writing partners. This is something I am actively working on, as I do want to be more involved in the community. As things are though, me not following back does not automatically mean I’m not interested.
When things get too overwhelming, I will password protect this blog. This is usually temporary, and I will return after a while. IM won’t work during that time.
   What I’m willing to RP
I will write anything from angst to banter to humour to fluff, but be warned that some things come more naturally to this muse than others.
I will rp with:
YuGiOh characters - that includes other Juns, GX is preferred since I’m not as familiar with other generations
characters from other fandoms I know - Don’t be afraid to ask if I know a fandom or not. Just don’t be mad if I don’t.
characters from fandoms I don’t know - I live under a rock, so I might not know anything about your fandom and character. If you don’t mind that, the same things apply as for OCs.
OCs - Please have an about page that allows me to learn about the character. I’m picky about OCs.
I will roleplay nsfw themes, but I won’t write smut with you unless you’re over 18. Any nsfw content will be tagged as such.
I will not rp with genderbends due to personal reasons. There might be exceptions to that rule, so feel free to ask, but please don’t be upset if I refuse. Trans hcs do not fall under this category.
I will not write therapy plots unless I initiate them on my own terms.
   What about Shipping?
Mun is filthy multishipping trash and will write almost anything.
That being said though, I don’t rp just to ship, and would like to take the time to properly develop our muses’ relationship instead of just rushing things for the sake of a ship. I don’t mind working with established relationships though, as long as we’ve talked about it first.
This blog doesn’t have Exclusives, but it does have Mains. They can be found here.
   On the Subject of Triggers
I’ll do my best to tag common triggers and squicks when they occur, using the tags “insert-trigger-here tw”. Please tell me if I miss anything.
If you could tag any visual depictions of human teeth, as well as visual and written teeth-related body horror, I’d be very thankful. I’d also appreciate if you could tag the urls of people you thread with, and any group verses you’re a part of (if applicable).
If we’re writing partners it would be nice if you could do this even if I don’t follow you, since I tend to check the blogs of people I thread with manually.
And lastly, a few basic Guidelines
I would like to keep my thread count at a maximum of three per partner at any time. If a fourth thread is started I will keep the reply in my drafts until one of the ongoing three is either completed or dropped. Exceptions to this rule may occur.
I don’t expect you to match my length, and probably won’t be able to match yours either. My replies are often relatively short and to the point, and I find it hard to make them any other way. I will try if matching is important to you, but please forgive me if I can’t.
Please enable non-followers to contact you via IM if you want to rp with me. (Unless you’re following me and have things set up so I’ll be able to contact you. The point is that we should be able to communicate.)
If you want to interact with Jun from a specific timeline/verse, please specify which one. If nothing is specified, I’ll default to my main verse. Here is a list of my verses.
Tag me as ‘jundeccentmil’.Tagging me in random things is absolutely okay and makes me feel appreciated.
Reblog Karma is in effect! If you don’t want to send stuff in, it’s not that hard to reblog from the source.
Please do not steal the icons that are used on this blog, or the images used in this blog’s theme and pages. They are all cropped and edited either by me or for me so don’t use them for yourself.
This isn’t a hard and fast rule, but I’d prefer if you didn’t use the reply feature for interactions, as those are a hassle to respond to. Asks and reblogs are much easier to work with for me, especially in large quantities.
The memes and open starters on this blog don’t have an expiration date, so it’s perfectly fine to send an ask based on a meme I reblogged months ago, as long as you make it clear which meme your ask is for. Event-based memes and starters are an obvious exception.
If you don’t like my reply or think you can’t properly work with it, it’s totally fine to ask me to change it and I’ll do my best to fix/improve it for you.
Uni homework/personal problems/life in general is a thing, but I try to be as quick and regular with replies as I can. Feel free to gently poke me when you think I might have forgotten about something.
English isn’t my native language. Don’t hesitate to point out mistakes I make, but please be polite about it.
Basically, just don’t be a dick. Please.
More to be added if it becomes relevant.

And maybe also Mana. (20/21 y/o) 6 Years after DSOD - Idea of Duel Academy is born (21/22 y/o) 7 Years after DSOD - Duel Academy opens (22/23 y/o)
///// INTERACTING WITH OTHER DM MUSES ///// For most interactions, Atem is 20 years old ( the bolded part in the timeline above ) and it has been four or so years after Dark Side of Dimensions. He is currently a ProDuelist and a Delegate at Kaiba Corp in the international affairs department.
When interacting with DM muses, the section below regarding interacting with GX muses is not yet relevant.
history;; When Kaiba decided to travel to the afterlife and battle the Pharaoh once more he wagered that Atem return with him if he won. Of course, Kaiba was not posed to win but refused to finish the duel hoping that he could force the man's hand. Kaiba stayed for three days, but as his soul began to decay Atem sacrificed his eternal peace and returned in order to save him. The unexpected happened, however: he returned into his own body of sixteen years old and, as he discovered, began to age naturally and normally. However another thing happened... his Ka was missing and in so he no longer had access to his Heka.
Needing to learn the culture and language now that he didn't have Yugi's knowledge to borrow (and adjust to living again ), Atem stayed with Kaiba to learn and 'register' himself as a citizen of Domino City. In all official documents he is listed as Atem Basara, born in Luxor Egypt and residing in Domino City Japan as a permanent citizen.
Still angry and wanting to make his own way, he moved into his own place six months later, re-acquainted with his friends, and picked up his deck. It seemed like fate that as Atem rose through the ranks he soon earned the title of King of Games from none other than Yugi himself with the young man giving him a solemn promise that he would return to reclaim it again one day.
Throughout his career dueling he would commonly come across the man responsible for his being alive again. Things were tense, but slowly Atem began to forgive Kaiba. On the surface anyway. It took about two years for Kaiba to convince Atem to join his company as a delegate in their International Affairs department. During this time, he continues to duel but reserves it for important international and national tournaments as his focus shifts.
Slowly, Atem got to know more about Kaiba; he learned thruths and secrets that not many knew of the man. Good things. Things that -- coupled with the man's ability to always challenge him -- started to create feelings. He wasn't even sure how it happened, but more and more he spent his nights at the Estate. Three years after Atem's return he sold his apartment and moved in. Largely this is still unknown to most.
For the most part people see them as rivals and business partners (which is not inaccurate). Their relationship has not gotten in the way of their work or their other relationships and it is not public. It is guessed by many and slowly becomes known by a select few. Two years into their relationship, Atem learned something interesting. Kaiba was also seeing Yugi.
The once Pharaoh, still angry at the omittance of this information, is more than happy to welcome Yugi into the space with him. He is, however, distrusting of Kaiba's motives.
//// INTERACTING WITH GX MUSES ///// About a year later, after the dust (from the above events) had settled and things in both Atem's personal life and professional life are steady again, he offhandedly mentions to Kaiba that he should make a school for kids who want to become pro-duelists knowing that Kaiba has a soft spot for young ones and is still passionate about dueling. He didn't think the idea would stick, but it did. At this point, Atem is about 22 years old. He, Kaiba, and Yugi work on the dueling curriculum. Each one pools together their skills and connections to other people who may wish to teach not just dueling but important life skills and academia. Less than a year later, the Duel Academy was built. It opens in the fall season after Atem turns 23 with a robust group of students including Judai Yuki.
These three people: Atem, Kaiba, and Yugi, are behind many of the ProDuelist tournaments not just in Domino City but in Japan and internationally as well. Atem's work in the International Affairs starts to shift from focusing on relationships with international companies in regards to Kaiba Corp's technology but in building connections to bring these tournaments worldwide and planning these out with the rest of the team and the international delegates.
With Yugi, Atem, and Kaiba all grown in exceptional it is no longer the fact that one is stronger than the other. On any given day, one would beat the other and the three have become something of relatively equal strength and skill. Often, two of the three will perform at the opening ceremony of a tournament. The winner of the ceremony is then the one who declares the winner of the tournament in whole.

INTERVIEW: Meet The Educator Using Manga to Change Young People's Lives
Most people woudn't be able to take $500 and build an organization from the ground up. Tony Weaver Jr. isn't like most people. From $500 he won by taking home first prize in a pitching contest in college, Tony was able to found Weird Enough Productions, a social impact organization that seeks to empower young people through the power of stories. Tony is also the creator of The Uncommons, a superhero series (read it on WebToon here) featuring a cast of diverse young heroes.
We had the pleasure of sitting down with tony on a Zoom call to talk about his organization, The Uncommons, and that feeling you get when the shonen OP hits.
This interview is a companion piece to our Black History Month series of articles celebrating and uplifting Black voices in the anime community. You can find links to the rest of the articles below
  Week 1
Week 2
Week 3
The cover for Volume 1 of The Uncommons
    Could you please introduce yourself?
Tony Weaver: My name is Tony Weaver Jr.., and I am the creator of The Uncommons.
Awesome. So I want you to go back in your mind and tell us — how did you first get into anime and manga?
Weaver: I think that I got into anime and manga not knowing that that's what I was getting into. I remember being very fond of after school Toonami blocks, really rushing home to see things like ... My dad would give me a specific time when I needed to start my homework. He said you need to start doing your homework about 4:30. But what he didn't understand was that Yu-Gi-Oh! GX came on at 4:30, and there was no way you could miss that! They didn't do reruns, there was no way for me to go rewatch it. So I'm like, “I get it. I know you want me to do my homework, but … I need to see what's going on with the Elemental Heroes right now and you’re kind of getting in the way here. Is there any way that you can be flexible with me?” And I just thought, "oh, those are the shows that I gravitate towards, those are the things that I enjoy."
It wasn't until years later that I realized, "oh. Wow. You've been watching anime this entire time." I remember my parents and I would go to the mall and I would disappear and they would know that they could find me in the manga section at Borders, one of those kids just sprawled out on the floor in the middle of the cube of books like, “ah! This is great, this is wonderful!” And the employees walking by every five minutes, thinking, “those kids never buy anything. They've been here for hours!” That sort of thing. Manga is really special I think in part because the illustration, but also just the quality of the story and the unique themes that mangaka are allowed to explore. I didn't see that a lot in Western media when I was growing up. And I think that's what made me a fan of it really early on.
Totally. And I think it's really interesting that you bring up the fact that you didn't know that it was anime to begin with, because I feel like our generation specifically ... anime was like this very fundamental building block of our media literacy. But we didn't know it until like maybe, you know, when Adult Swim happened, and you're like, "oh wait, what? There's something going on here. This is not like other American cartoons." But yeah, also very much the same with the book stores … Borders should have charged us rent because we spent so much time on their floors.
Weaver: Yeah! They really should have.
So I wanted to know before you get into the foundation more, what's the story behind the name “Weird Enough?”
Weaver: Ah, so my organization, Weird Enough Productions, what we're really focused on is telling stories that make you feel the same way you feel when you hear a shonen anime theme song. Like when JUJUTSU KAISEN comes on and that opening guitar riff for "Kaikai Kitan" kicks in and the first verse starts and that bass drum is pounding, like it DOES something to you, right? You're just sitting here, you're watching TV, everything's fine. But then that "Haruka Kanata bassline comes in [mimics bass line] and you're like, “ah! I’m here! It's amazing! Wait, what? What am I doing?” We want to create stories that make people feel like that every time they watch it, every time they read it, page after page.
The way that we go about doing that is helping people embrace who they are. I think we're all weird. All of us are weird in some way or capacity, and for the kids who grew up watching anime, we got othered pretty fast. It didn't take us long to figure it out, right? But I think that everybody has something about them that's weird and unorthodox, and I think that society kind of conditions us to run away from that thing. But that thing that makes us different is what allows us to impact the world in a way that only we can. So, the reason we picked the name “Weird Enough” is because my belief is that as long as you pursue your personal truth, you're never too weird. You're just weird enough. As long as you’re operating as who you are in a way that's totally genuine. That's never too weird, you should never let anybody make you feel that way.
I love that. I feel like shonen anime is such a good choice to compare that with, because I think — with shonen anime specifically — they're usually all about bringing together a cast of characters who in some way or another have different traumas or are marginalized by society in a certain way. And it's because of that pain that they're able to develop special skills that let them like save the world.
Weaver: It’s really easy to fall in love with shonen because ... some people call it the concept of being an underdog, but I call it "being unequipped." Sometimes, it's not that you're an underdog, sometimes it’s just that you're unequipped. I want to be Hokage, but I can't control my chakra. I want to be the Wizard King, but I don't have any magical energy. I want to be the world's number one hero, but I don't have a Quirk. There's this constant juxtaposition of, “I want to… but I don't have…” And to see these characters move throughout these narratives, everybody can find a point in their life where they say, “I wanted to do this, but I didn't have [blank], and I felt like I needed to have that in order to do it.” So these characters overcoming becomes kind of like a rallying cry for people. That's what it's been for me.
Well said. How did you get Weird Enough started in the first place?
Weaver: I started Weird Enough Productions with $500 and a vision. Those two things.
I was in college at Elon University, I was double majoring in Acting and Strategic Communications, and I was a junior, so the real world was knocking on my door. It was in the first semester of my junior year, I was about to go move to Japan to take classes as part of my degree, and I found myself suddenly getting very scared. I felt this fear that… "if you don't do something right now, you're not going to be able to tell the stories that you want to tell." I looked at classes, like mentors of mine that graduated before me to step out into the world with this eternal optimism, this wellspring of, “I can go, I can do it!” And then you catch up with them a year later, or two years later and the world’s beat them down. And that made me very afraid. I was like, "if you don't ... if you don't do something right now, if you don't create an infrastructure for yourself right now, you're gonna struggle, and how good are the stories that you come up with going to be if you're in a constant state of struggle while you're making them?"
It's significantly  more likely that you put this stuff aside, you take your toys and put them back into the toy box, then you go be an adult. And I REALLY didn't want to do that. So I found out that my school had a pitch competition and the first prize got $500, and my thought was, “500 dollars? That's like, a lot of money. I can totally start a whole company and change the world with $500. Are you joking?! $500?! Maaaaan. Perfect, that's perfect." So I put the pitch together, and it was in the School of Business, so I had to dress up. I showed up to the pitch basically as a formal Frankenstein. Because I didn't have any formal clothes, I had to borrow one friend's pants, and I had to borrow one friend's belt, and I had to borrow one friend's shirt, and it was too big for me so I had to like tuck it in in the back, and I had a pair of sneakers because I was like, “I'm not wearing dress shoes,” and my other friend let me borrow his blazer. So I show up literally in the garb of all of my friends, like all my buddies were supporting me. They were like, "you can do this, take this, take this, take this," and I pop up like, “Hi, my name is Tony Weaver Jr.” And… we got first place. We got first place in that pitch competition and even though that $500 did not take me anywhere as far as I thought it was gonna take me, now, millions of dollars later, it's really created a pathway for us.
Totally.
Weaver: I think that for us, a part of the urgency was built in the fact that I knew I didn't have that right. Like, my parents created an amazing foundation for me. I didn't have to take out student loans to go to school. My mom said, "that's my gift to you, that's my investment in you. I believe in what you can go do, I am giving you four years to figure it out and then you gotta launch, homie. You gotta get it done." So going with an attitude like that. It's like "okay, I gotta go find where it is." You got a $500 pitch competition over here, $1200 over here. By the time I graduated we raised over $100,000 just from me going and pitching, me getting the slide together, walking into the room, going,“hi, my name is Tony Weaver Jr., and I have this thing that I think is going to change the world and this is what it is, here's why you should care about it.” And that was kind of the foundation for us. Having the clarity of that vision and what the organization could be, what our stories could be, even when we didn't have the resources to make them yet.
Sometimes, it's not that you're an underdog, sometimes it’s just that you're unequipped.
Well, speaking of the stories, could you give us a little bit of a rundown of The Uncommons?
Weaver: When I talk about The Uncommons, what I say is that it is the story of a group of five unlikely outsiders. They have to save each other to save the world. So The Uncommons kicks off when our main character Iris, this West African teen, has a vision where she predicts the end of the world. She has no idea what it is, she has no idea where it's coming from, but when her parents tell her that her visions are child's play, when they write off her premonitions and tell her that she doesn't know what she's talking about, she runs away from home to the place from her vision, this futuristic metropolis called Delta City. As Iris arrives in Delta City, she thinks that she is going after her vision, but what she doesn't know is that she is walking in the footsteps of a prophecy that has been in play centuries before she ever showed up.
It has a lot of those shonen themes. People get mad when I call it a manga, because it's in color, right? People get really mad when I call it a manga sometimes, but I 100% consider it a manga because it's shonen! You've got a main character with glowy, special eyes, you've got an underdog story there, you have a very engaging ensemble cast that all have their own traumas that they're resolving, and you have these themes of friendship, these themes of self belief and really amazingly choreographed action sequences. It's totally shonen!
Well, shonen isn't just a set of visual aesthetics, it's a set of like of narrative … what's the word, narrative styles? Motifs? And it sounds like The Uncommons goes by that.
Weaver: My favorite thing when talking about manga is that I always encourage people, I always ask people and say to them, "well, what do you think manga is? What do you think it is? What do you think counts as manga?" And they’ll normally go, “oh well it's made by people in Japan,” and I go, “okay, well Boichi, the mangaka for Dr. Stone, he's from Korea and he’s published in Shonen Jump.” So is that not a manga?” And they go, “well, it's published by someone from an asian country.” Cool. So Svetlana Chmakova, who is Russian, has a manga that’s published by Tokyo Pop. There's a mangaka that I really enjoy who is a non-binary, half German, half Ghanaian creator and their series is published in Tokyo Pop. Is that not a manga? And they go, “well, it's not black and white!” And I go, "cool. Well Miyazaki himself created a manga that was 100% watercolor where the entire thing was in color. So are you gonna tell Hayao Miyazaki that he isn't a mangaka because it's in color?" The more that you interrogate the constraints that people try to put on the genre and that they try to put on who's allowed to make this stuff and who's allowed to tell these stories, the more you can go, “no, it's not that.” Ultimately what it boils down to is that it's a feeling, it's a set of narrative themes that creates the distinction of this genre. And I think we totally fall into that.
Totally. Man, that's awesome. I always love talking about where the line lies between anime and cartoons or manga and comics. It really is like impossible to quantify. You just feel it.
Weaver: Yeah. I think what happens sometimes is that there are a lot of anime fans who have been othered so much that they begin to identify with that otherness. So, mentally, the only way that they know themselves and that they understand themselves is through the feeling, “I like this thing that's different from everything else. You watch cartoons, I watch anime! I'm different.” Because they have been othered so much — there's so much pain associated with that — rather than finding areas of common ground to relate to people, they're like, “no, I'm different! I watch stuff with refined storylines.” And when you go up to them and say things like, “oh well why isn't Avatar: The Last Airbender an anime?” And they’re like, “it’s not an anime because it wasn't animated in Japan, it was animated by a Korean animation studio.” Okay. Studio Wit sub-contracts their animation to animators in Korea. Are the first three seasons of Attack on Titan not an anime since it was animated by people who live in Korea? I don't know, you tell me. What do you do?
With the stories I tell, the people that I talk to, the communities that I get the privilege to be a part of, what I try to do is talk about how the magical thing about anime is not how it separates us from the general public. The magical thing about it is not like displaying your refined taste because you understand all the Biblical allusions in Neon Genesis Evangelion. That's not what it is. The magical thing about being an anime fan is that you can turn to a random person and go, "hey, this is Shinji, and he's about to get in the robot," and instead of looking at you like you're crazy, that person says, "oh? What happens next? What kind of robot is it? What's he fighting? Why does he need the robot in order to fight it?" I think that level of possibility and that broad wealth of storytelling ... that's what makes it special. Tha's what makes it a community I want to be a part of.
  I couldn't have said it better. That's ... yeah. That's exactly it.
So my next question is, well, plenty of people agree that it's important for media to show lots of different kinds of people, but I think a lot of people have difficulty articulating why it's beneficial. So, to you, what about representation is so powerful?
Weaver: I think representation is powerful because it puts you in another person's shoes. It makes you relate to a person because you have a better understanding of their circumstances. So for example, Steven Universe, right? I wouldn't say that I consider Steven Universe an anime, but if Rebecca Sugar was like, “it's an anime,” I'd be like, “okay, I believe you. Whatever you say.” But when you look at the character Garnet from Steven Universe, — spoiler alert for people who haven't seen Steven Universe — when we find out that Garnet is two space lesbians in a trench coat, there were some people who we're like, “I love black characters,” but had in no way shape or form done any thinking about the lack of representation of LGBTQ characters and any biases that those people held ... Well, if you love Garnet and you still like Garnet, guess what? You have to confront that now. You gotta look yourself in the mirror and be like, “this is a character that I liked but ever since I found out that she was part of the LGBTQ community, I feel some way about it. I feel iffy about it now.” And now you gotta interrogate that. You got to sit with that and you got to say, “I didn't even know that this bias was here.”
I think that what makes representation good as a tool on both sides is, if you are a person that is marginalized, getting to see yourself is very important. I can't stress enough what an impact something like that is able to have. But on the other side, if you're not a marginalized person, you're not a part of that lived experience, and you haven't thought about what these people have to experience at all, ever? Now you gotta think about it. Now you have to think about it, and I think it creates behavior change in a way, because you know what you don't know now. You have a better understanding of the world around you now.
Absolutely. I probably woudln't have realized I wanted to be a girl without seeing characters in anime who blurred the lines in terms of gender presentation or gender identity. That was like super formative and super helpful for me.
Weaver: There are so many people I know that talked about Ranma ½ as an awakening for them in the sense that they didn't know that it was possible for them to not have to be one or the other. They didn't know that it was possible for like those boundaries and for that binary to not be there, that it was possible for a person to live their life that way. Those sorts of things are so important. Representation, is really, really important.
Okay, so I have a very intense question next which is… top three anime. Go.
Weaver: Top three?
  Top three.
Weaver: Eureka Seven, by Studio Bones. Dr. Stone because it's amazing and everybody should watch it. And, out of respect, One Piece.
Good answers. Solid answers. Okay, next question is — do you have any advice for young blerds who want to start making their own stories come to life?
Weaver: I have a lot of it, tell me when to be quiet. If you have a story that you want to tell, you have a thing that you want to make, what's important is that you think about your story, but you also think about the business context that that story is being created in. I know so many people that are like, “I want to make my own manga so it can get turned to an anime.” Okay, well number one, are you going to do that work? Because My Hero Academia didn't get picked up as an anime until maybe it's fourth arc. The stuff that happened in the anime last season had already been printed when the anime got announced. So cool, you want your manga to get turned into an anime. Are you going to draw 100 chapters of it first? So many people have like two issues of a story out, or three chapters of the story out and they're like, “yeah, we're talking to studios trying to get it adapted and a da-da-da-da.” Okay. If you're trying to do it the way that mangaka do it, that's not exactly how it works. But there are so many comparisons too, having people say like, “I want to be like Oda, I want to make the next One Piece.” Cool. Oda draws One Piece. Oda has a significant amount of say and sway in casting and all creative decisions that happened in the One Piece anime, but Oda’s not directing every episode. He's not in the booth every day with the voice actors being like, “no, I like this take, no I like this take.” He's not in the studio with the animators saying, "hey, shift this,” or, “move this." And there are so many people that are like, “I want to be Oda, but I want to draw all of it. I want to direct the anime, I want to work directly with the voice actors, I want to have a role in casting,” and I'm like, “That doesn't happen.”
That's not to crush anybody's dreams, that's just not the process. We're working on The Uncommons animated series right now, and I'm not even the showrunner for it. And I made it! Right? Like there's … you got to think about the market that you're in and how to find success in that, because there are some people that will say, “oh man, I don't think I can draw 100 chapters of a manga, waiting for it to get adapted.” 100 60-page chapters? Yeah, that's hard. I don't think I can do that. However, you look at somebody like Jerry Craft who's a Black graphic novelist, won so many awards for his graphic novel New Kid. New Kid's like 250 pages, Jerry got a really nice advance for it, and now Lebron James is producing the show off of 250 pages. But so many people are like, “I want to be a mangaka, I want to be like Oda, I want to be like Oda!” Well, you live in the United States. In the United States, you can get paid more for less pages and get yourself in production faster if you just go work with a traditional publisher on a graphic novel. But you got to have context of the business that you're working in instead of just saying, “oh I want to be like Oda, I want to be like Oda.” You got to have a business acumen that's just as strong as your pen if you want to find a way without destroying yourself
Man. Great advice, wow. I think a lot of people underestimate how much you need to research the industry that you want to go into. And it's it's unfortunate that you can't just get by on artistic merit alone, but you really need to learn how to work with the system. Because that's the system that’s in place right now!
Weaver: There there are so many people that are like, “oh I'll just make it myself!” and I go, “Are you? You're gonna make it yourself? The budget for Demon Slayer's last movie was $15.8 million. You're gonna do that by yourself? For real? You're gonna do that by yourself? Maybe. It'll take you 15 years to do it, but more power to you." So many people are focused on creative control. They want all the creative control, they want super high quality and they want it to happen immediately and I'm like ... [near audible look of skepticism]. Those things don't mix. That is not how this works. The biggest advice that I give creators is: you think about your story, you invest in your story, by all means. Do your deal with your story. But if you want to find success, you gotta handle the business part. Think of your least favorite anime in the world right now. Think of the anime that you watched and you were like, “man, this anime was terrible.” But guess what? It got made. It got made, it made it through the finish line. You might not like the story, but it got made, people got paid for it. The creator can be like, “my work got adapted into an anime.” You got to understand what happens in that process and what allows you to get there.
I think that's great advice and I hope our readers take that to heart, all of the aspiring creatives out there. Well, we've made it to the end. Do you have any parting words for people reading this article or fans of The Uncommons?
Weaver: All fans of The Uncommons, I really appreciate you. I really, really, really do. It feels weird to think about the fact that something that popped up in my head that I scribbled on like notebook paper is something that over 2.5 million people have read, something that allows me to support myself and sustain my team as we work around the world to tell these stories and that means the world to me. I really appreciate people that read The Uncommons. For the people that have not heard of The Uncommons at all, go check it out. I hear the guy that writes it's pretty cool and you should go check it out.
But in general, like, if you're a nerd, if you're an anime fan, focus on what brings people together. Focus on the thing in these stories that feels universally relatable, that can help you relate to another person in a better way. When you see people of marginalized backgrounds, especially Black people, trying to make waves in this industry, understand that — especially for Black creators — sometimes we’ve got to work twice as hard to get half as far. So, that comment, that like, that share, that thing that feels very basic to you can really go a long way and helping prove that there's an appetite for these stories.
