If you’re doing a Breakfast Club AU, you can’t reproduce the lamp argument wholesale with Eddie as Bender and Jonathan as Brian. They’re both poor, they’re both smart (although seemingly Jonathan is more able to translate that into at least moderate academic success), and frankly I think they could both make a lamp.

#I don’t begrudge anyone enjoying a breakfast club AU #but generally I don’t vibe with them #for a lot of different reasons #(a) they tend to be fr*ity four affairs (plus jonathan) which I’m not into #(b) they (like a lot of similarly structured AUs) are too faithful to the plot #and (c) I like the breakfast club but oh my lord the two romances are so unappealing to me #not in an uninteresting way #but that’s not what I’d want to do with a ship I like #also I think there are a lot of small differences in Jonathan and Eddie’s situations #but they shake out about the same
