prologue

synopsis: what happens when soccer player!kang taehyun, who isn’t focused on school but is smart enough to pass, sees yn walk in the hallways nearly everyday after homecoming. taehyun’s new hallway crush begins to grow into something bigger, but what happens when he has to make a choice between yn or continuing to fail school ? will taehyun be able to focus on sports, classes, and trying to win yn over ?

taehyun’s eyes lingered over to you, talking to his friends, as they gradually lost his attention. his eyes stayed stuck onto you, watching as you walked towards his way. in all honesty, he wished that his friends could just shut their mouths, not because he didn’t care about whatever they were talking about.. and don’t get him wrong he loved his friends. but he just wanted all of his attention on you. seeing the way you walked down the hallway, your eyes shining with joy, as you contained a pretty smile.

your arms held a math textbook close to your chest, rushing to your next class, worrying over the fact that you only had a minute to get to your advanced mathematics class. your eyes noticed the boy who was watching you from afar, smile growing even wider, and just as you were about to reach him, you went to the left, going down a different hallway. he looked back, watching as you just barely made it into your class.

and since that day that taehyun spotted you in the hallways.. he couldn’t help but see you nearly every single day. even within the large amount of students, taehyun’s attention was always wavered, no matter how much focus he had on a particular activity.. you were always at the center of his mind.

you took a seat lunch tray in your hands, small little smile resting on your face, enjoying the time you spent with your friends. observing your surroundings as they laughed and giggled while playing on the phone, as they took turns playing games on each other’s phones. your eyes wandered the area, noticing the rather noticeable face that you had grown accustomed to spotting in the hallways, his black hair resting just above his eyes. your eyes stuck on his figure watching as he got up from his seat at his lunch table, his eyes glancing over towards you.. and just like that: it was as if the world stopped. his eyes lingered over at you, his heart skipping a beat.

“-.. so yeah, that’s what happened and i was just so surprised because i just never saw it coming, y’know what i mean, yn ?”ningning rambled, peeking back to try to understand what you were looking at, but she ultimately failed as your eyes turned their attention back on her. following along with her statements while taking small peeks at the boy who also continued to glance over at you. smile plastered on both of your faces.

this was the sign of a new beginning for taehyun.

When James had come hobbling to the door on his crutches, because he was forcing himself to use them instead of the wheelchair no matter what he felt like, the last person he expected to be standing on the other side of it was Ariel Triton.

Well– that was a lie, actually. There were plenty of people he would have put behind her on that list. But she was pretty far down.

It wasn't like they were enemies or anything, but it wasn't like they were friends either. They just sort of...were. He didn't think she thought about him at all, even if he still knew her birth date (the same month as his father's) and thought of her when he passed by the store front that was now filled that they had once hunted around in for treasure that wasn't there when it had still been just an empty building or saw her username on Twitter.

Yet here she was– with gifts for him.

"Uh," was his very intelligent reply to this. That was him, James Jones the II, model wordsmith. He breathed in, mentally shaking himself. "Yeah! Yeah, are you kidding? It's my drug of choice since it's legal and all." A beat passed. "Er– sorry, is this a stop and drop situation or did you want to come in? I won't be offended if it is."

So, Sonic dream team. Am I the only one that thinks about how out of the cast Knuckles might also be able to take control of the reverie?

Ariam said only dreams of the pure hearted could be turned into reality. Sonic can get too cocky, Amy and Tails despite meaning well tend to get too caught up with the things they're passionate about to make a correct judgement and Rouge is.... Rouge. Those qualities may deny the access to the reverie depending on the dream.

Knuckles despite his temper has no motivations other than taking care of his island and guarding the master emerald so by this logic I think Knuckles could also potentially have control in the dream world.

Discovery's character drama logic

Occasionally trips to Reddit are actually informative. Credit to MalleusManus of the Daystrom Institute subreddit for unpacking this in a way that finally gelled. I'm kind of kicking myself for not seeing it sooner. I always understood Discovery was more of a character drama than an adventure show. Yet the piece I was missing, the piece I think a lot of Trekkies are missing is that Discovery has always been a character drama first. Whereas most previous Treks were mystery/procedural/"competency porn" first.

The specific mix of characters involved rarely actually mattered (except in DS9) and you could lift the outline of the story and transplant it into more or less any Trek series or even an entirely different anthology series like Twilight Zone or Dark Mirror and only need to fudge some of the details. That isn't to say that the individual characters and their quirks didn't make us love them, but the characters were never the point of TOS & TNG except when it was a showcase episode written specifically to do a bit of character development. The point of the characters was to have the plot happen to them, to wax philosophic about the particulars of the ethical or conceptual conundrum, and then solve the problem. The problem, once resolved, largely leaves them and their fundamental conditions unchanged.

DS9 is what happens when you ditch the anthology style storytelling but are still largely plot driven rather than character driven as a first priority. The writers of DS9 had grand visions of things they wanted to happen to both the setting and characters, but the characters still evolved rather slowly.

Discovery started from the perspective of what sorts of situations it wanted to put specific characters in in order to have them react in a very particular kind of way, what sort of emotions they wanted to see emoted, and what mindset the showrunners wanted the characters to have when it was all said and done. The relationships between characters are what ultimately matters and the particulars of the plot and worldbuilding come after that.

I would have liked more attention to the particulars of setting and plot, but recognizing that Discovery's plots are the character journeys not the puzzle of the week, I definitely understand it differently now and why its always been a little tedious. Namely because I've never liked any of the characters all that much. I don't really dislike any of them, but other than Saru, I can't honestly say I have any favorites. Ariam, for obvious reasons, and Owo because of her past as a luddite I was always curious to learn more about....only to have the first one die in her first and only point of view episode and the other to only talk about her life outside of Starfleet when she needs to manifest a special talent related to her history to save the crew.

But again, its an insight that was on the tip of my proverbial tongue and I couldn't quite articulate it before. I finally get what I don't like about Discovery and why in a way this is more than just "bad show bad." It has never really worked for me precisely because the central focus isn't really why I watch Trek and what it was trying to make me feel, it didn't succeed at.

I'm still sorry to see it go, because I think it was starting to think bigger and try to situate itself better within the Star Trek storytelling tradition, its themes, and rhythms and it just got cut down as the ugly ducking was showing swan like tendencies.

feeling very positive and emotional about Face the Strange, I loved the fun bits, strangely all connected to Stamets in some way ("Are you stuck in a time loop right now Stamets?" "nooo?"; "we have to find stamets" "how could he help" "hes outside of time because of his tardigrade dna" "uhhhhh?"; "Every one get out I'm very angry and grumpy") and I loved all the sad things from poor abandoned Zora to poor alive Ariam TT They really brought her back for just one episode. I really love how Burnham used that future knowledge to prove herself to Airiam that she'd know how she'd act in such a hopeless situation but I also hate that Airiam exactly knows how she'd sacrifice herself in that situation my poor little Baby why does she think about that TT

It was also really awesome to see all of Burnham's progress. I hate that the show is ending but man am I ready for a full rewatch.
