DAY 1/32: BEETLEJUICE
Tumblr media
Ahhh Beeblejooice. Tim Burton’s best film, the point where he peaked. With Michael Keton doin his gremlin thing and Geena Davis with her sweet, loving delivery and of course Winona Mother Fuckin Ryder the OG goth inspiration who ignited a passion in millions for wearing black and signing forlornly. Beeltejupes Rules! Thank god Tim Burton never made another movie after this. It was shocking but really tasteful he went out on such a bang.
WHY’S IT HERE? Beetlejiopes, while not set during October/Fall, is absolutely a Halloween Movie. The dark mortality-focused humor, mixed with the lighthearted nature and Burton’s at times downright macabre visuals is extremely reminiscent to the aesthetic of Halloween. I would argue BeebJooce elicits a similar tonal/emotional response as the Halloween Season. I think the vaguely New England background energy helps strengthen the meta connection. Anyway, Betelgeuse is a fantastic movie to get you in the Spirited Mood of the Halloween Season. A great way to start off this most glorious of months.
PAIRS PERFECTLY WITH: Beetlejuice (The Television Series)
Tumblr media
Before we start anything, I need you to know that for this recommendation my only note is the following:
The Beetlejuice TV Series fucking rules. It might be my favorite animated show from this time period??? I stumbled onto it about 3 or 4 years ago now, and fell in love with the inspired animation, beautifully 90s design aesthetic, and the generally wholesome rapport between BFFs Lydia and Beeltejuice. Yeah, they’re best budds in this one! This series has nothing to do with the original movie, though there are direct nods and references scattered throughout. Seriously, the TV Series Fucks SO Hard. Anyway stop reading this and just go watch both versions of the opening already.
Random Recommendation: Silent Hill 2 Historical Society Breakdown | Gettin' Super Nerdy [SSFF]
Tumblr media
Since its the start of the Halloween Media List, I want to throw in a recommendation that I haven’t been able to pair with any other movie on my list. That said, it certainly fits the Vibes I’m going for here. Stop Skeletons From Fighting’s video “Silent Hill 2 Historical Society Breakdown” is an absolutely wonderful hour long look at a section of the 2001 game. The host Derek Alexander’s immense knowledge and passion for SH2 shines through as he takes us on a journey through the Historical Society. This video is what made me interested in the Silent Hill series and made me start to think about horror writing. It’s a great watch for any fan of horror video games!
