"Oh the media being biased/silent on Gaza is a conspiracy theory"
I am a literal journalist and this is what happened when I pitched an article to a magazine I write for:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We covered conflict before. We denounced PMs' positions as wrong before. But this is where the editor balks - anything that makes it look even vaguely like we might, possibly, support Gaza. Even if the article itself would not have been an opinion piece, but a news feature about events on the ground.
We have free press, baby! But avoid the matter entirely if you can. It's delicate and depressing, why would you talk about it? Don't rock the boat. Be quiet. You don't need to go there.
Self-censorship is alive and well.

People warning about shows getting cancelled because of the writer's strike fail to understand that all my favorite shows have already been cancelled. You can't hurt me more than Netflix already has.

I love to give Bruce crap as much as the next person, but at least he's trying. Also Dickie's face in that last panel 🥹

also I'm pretty sure there was a moment (mid-cross talk during the ep) as somebody was mentioning Orym always being in the protective/defensive position and thus in the thick of it, when Dorian muttered almost too quietly, a little admiring, a little (hollowly) laughing, a lot sad, "Always right in the mix..."
and by "I'm pretty sure" I mean I can't stop thinking about it

sonadow au doodles that KILL ME!!! general gist of the au under the cut if you're curious
basically shadow is a ghost haunting the "ark" (a lab disguised as a house where he, gerald, and maria all lived) and about 50 years after his death team sonic + rouge and my bf's oc, acid, as irresponsible teens/young adults and attempt to have a party, but sonic is dragged off into the darkness to be possessed by shadow in his drunken state. they grow a rivalry fighting over control of sonics body and eventually fall in love over it (think venom and eddie brock). they live like that for a few years and the sonic gang adjust to life with a weird little ghost around, eventually fixing up the lab with eggman's help (who def starts out as a dick to begin with but. he gets redeemed bc i love him) and make a new body for shadow from his remains and a child from maria's dna who sonic + shadow take in and raise (also named maria) and its js a cushy fluffy family story from there and they have their own hoglets later too (they're t4t so one was from amy but when shadow got his body he was able to impregnate people so one of them is from him, they're twins tho :3) they kill me i love them so so so much

It's always worrisome to see a post going around where op asserts something followed by a chain of reblogs all going "no way! my mind is blown!" -- but if you glance through the notes you find a whole lot of people debunking it. And it's doubly worrying when it's about health stuff.
Gentle reminder that if something makes you go "no way!" you might want to fact check... and if you aren't sure what to google, you can also skim the post notes to see if someone else has already done it. There are some awesome science folks on Tumblr who like to go look up the relevant papers and share highlights in the notes.

i don't think the term "geriatric pregnancy" is sexist; pregnancy simply is riskier when you are 35+
Never said it was sexist. Said it was BAD.
Tumblr media
It may not be sexist, but I can tell you, as a 36 year old woman, being told I was having a “geriatric” pregnancy was goddamned INSULTING. The definition of geriatric is “an aged person.” I know we live in a porn sick world where any woman past the age of 25 is considered washed up, dried up, used up, haggard and old, but that’s not actually the case! Geriatric is defined as 65 and older, so WHY do we use the term for women who are 35 years old?? If a 65-year old woman was pregnant against all odds, sure, THAT would be a geriatric pregnancy. But a 35 or 36-year old woman being pregnant? Thats just normal. In fact, I think it probably IS rooted in sexism. Women are expected to pop out babies when we’re “young and fertile” rather than when we’ve matured enough to make our own choice about having a kid, so any crusty old nag having a baby past 25 is considered old and busted, ergo geriatric pregnancy.
Geriatric does not mean riskier, it means OLD. If medical professionals really want to address it accurately, they should call it what it is: a higher risk pregnancy. We don’t call the common cold “food poisoning” because that’s not what it is. Why call a woman in her 30’s or 40’s having a kid “geriatric” when she has at least another quarter century before she herself is is geriatric?

begging people to remember that ancient Greek households (especially those of the wealthy/elite ie Odysseus' palace) wouldn't have had family portraits/framed paintings the way we think of them today & that they were more likely to decorate their homes with art in the form of murals made of pebbles or even glass/painted frescos, sculptures (not always of people or gods! Sometimes they made sculptures of animals too :) ), friezes, PAINTED POTTERY, metalwork (like statues and urns), carved gems/cameos for jewelry, furniture such as carved futons/chairs (although I think this was more rare), painted or carved cups made of all sorts of materials ranging from ceramic to precious metals, and YES the ancient Greeks throughout much of their history utilized glass to embellish their sculptures/homes or to make things such as pretty vases/jugs (tho to be fair I think the use of glass for this purpose came long after the Odyssey was incorporated into ancient Greek oral tradition)
Anyways! ancient Greek artwork is extremely vast & varied, especially once you get to the Hellenistic period! (My fav time period for the absolute explosion in expressive artwork as seen here and here) Yes this time period (circa 330 BC-30 BC) comes way later in the timeline compared to Odysseus but for the sake of art or fics made by a fandom some 2k years later, you wouldn't see me complaining if more people populated their creations with all sorts of ornamentations, rather than imagining Odysseus living in a palace of bare white walls and plain furniture.

Hmmm turns out when you've made your party's entire platform an appeal to the weird maladjusted idiot "Fuck Trudeau" freak crowd, the sort of candidates that you wind up running turn out to be hmmmm...less than ideal.
Also, the rising tide of virulent racism and xenophobia against South Asians we've witnessed here in Canada these last five years really freaks me the hell out. Visit any subreddit for a medium sized Canadian city in Ontario and you will learn so many new slurs you never knew existed. I don't like it.

you know, a plothole (kinda, its one to me) i havent even talked about before is .. how is there basically no sonau tech in the past, or isnt shown nor used; the only thing i remember is that weird half assed way to try and make us care about the apparent time zelda had spent there and tell us in a tiny text you have to find scattered above the sky that she "tamed a construct beast" which .... could be anything bc its so vague and non-interesting and .. maybe one or two non-combat constructs in the background in a few of the cutscenes
but given how many constructs there are alive in totks present, and more are broken down that were probably working back in the past, did they even use anything of it against ganondorf? like, i know its called a war but we only see ganondorf charging on that badass horse we never see again and that bit lasts like .. 5 seconds? and he just ... somehow ends up in that cave so far below the earth with the other sages? HOW did he even get there
the constructs you find in the game can be pretty tanky and packing quite a punch, theres auto-targeting mini tanks, lasers and fire/electric/ice throwers, bombs and otherwise explosives, couldnt they have easily fought against some bokblins even if they were miasmafied
or am i supposed to believe ganondorf became THAT strong just through that little magic pebble (isnt that a little insulting too?), while all the other stone having people are so much more inferior AND have gans bossfight not be that hard is kinda ... weird? i know link is special an all, but he doesnt have a stone and the sages dont really add to his powerlevel, the msot they do is distract gans little clones for a bit
doesnt that, and how irrelevant the whole sonau tech actually is to the plot, feel even more like its a thing put in there just to showcase that they could do it (like ... a tech demo) and like its an unfitting sandbox element just for some very dedicated players to build entire war maschines for viral videos out of but the vast majority will not have that kind of patience nor fun with that (i for one do not care to laser explode or otherwise terrorize little enemy camps with otherwise overly ridiculous weapons bc its not fun and really not worth the effort to me)

Crack storyline for spectobi
-Ben runs into (Purge Trooper) Cody first, and Cody thinks that Ben is actually the child of Cal Kestis (several old assumptions from the clone wars that never got cleared up means he thinks Cal is Obi-Wan’s kid) (the bad batch is not canon to spectobi)
-Ben runs into Cal Kestis, and, in trying not to give away that he's not Korkie’s child, immediately calls Cal his uncle
-Cal is like,,, 98% sure that Obi-Wan Kenobi is not his father, but, well, it's not exactly like he can check the temple records NOW, and this kid is so damn insistent,,,
-Korkie’s spouse finally catches up to them and they and Cal are very Spiderman Meme about them both being Jedi
-Ben has to do A Lot of quick talking so that Korkie’s spouse does not actually mention that he is Not Their Kid. Korkie’s spouse ends up thinking he is actually, somehow, a clone of Korkie, and so??? technically??? sort of their kid???
-Korkie's spouse and Cal now have the weirdest Jedi in-law situation ever
-Ahsoka senses Bullshit and reaches out to one of the only surviving people who knew Obi-Wan very very well--Quinlan Vos
-Quinlan, thinking this is a joke, is like "yeah obviously Cal was mine and Obi-Wan’s. Did you not see the resemblance?"
-Ben now has to come to terms with the fact that he had a kid with the Duchess he was protecting AND his best friend.
-Bo-Katan is losing her mind. Cere thinks this is hilarious. (jedi survivor is not canon to spectobi)
-When Ezra comes across Old Ben in the desert, Old Ben ALSO thinks this is hilarious and clarifies nothing.

OK but the way that the Musical itself seems to reflect the comics characterisation more then the show (Re-instating the love triangle, Jughead constantly bringing up food and seemingly having no interest in women, Cheryl supposedly being into Archie) and then the show characters actively reject those characterisations and one by one leave and/or strive to change the Musical (Betty and Veronica change their song from a love song about Archie to a love song about each other and kiss, thus subverting the love triangle and meanwhile Archie, instead of protesting this, decides separately to end the love triangle to focus on himself, Jughead leaves the Musical after the first number deeming it beneath him, Cheryl alongside Toni campaign for a queer love song and leave when it isn't added.) Hell, Archie isn't even in the Musical by the end, literally symbolising that the Archie in the musical isn't Riverdale Archie, thus separating Riverdale further from the comics canon and restating that while on paper the show is based off of the Archie comics it is in name only for the most part and in practice basically none of these characters could (or should, in the eyes of the writer's in all likelyhood) be considered the same as their comic counterparts—
