Just realised that the reason I love your version of tenna so much is because shes the exact type of butch character I wanted to see as a kid (though I didn't have the words for it at the time). She's just... cool, in a way that women in media just weren't allowed to be when I was little, and I love that.

She's loud, aggressive, and a little mean. She's someone who loves, and she might not be a mom, but she is an aunt and a damn good one at that. Her faith fails her, yet she stays tough despite the deep-seated emptiness that realisation fills her with. She's just cool, y'know?

ah thank you so much! getting compliments about tenna even this close to release warms my heart a whole lot. (it's so strange to think that soon i won't immediately associate the name tenna with just her!) i'm glad those parts of her character resonated with you because they were important for me too! one thing i set out to do with tenna was to make a character that, while not being an exact prediction of what the character might be like in the game, sticks true to the core philosophy of "empathetic subversion" in undertale and deltarune. and the cliches i wanted to empathetically subvert were ones a lot of people might have grown up with — the older, oft-criminal, grizzled man who grows to be like family to an innocent young child (annie does it, all dogs go to heaven does it, plenty of batman adaptations do it,); the comical cartoon bossman who usually ends up posing the not-so-threatening threat of the week to the heroes; the old-time mobster. what would it be like to examine where those traits might come from? how would i make a character that felt like a real person with real emotions out of these old cliches? and so often we see men in those roles — what if this archetype was a woman instead?

as well, deltarune is a game that already has a ton of heart and earnestness in its approach to gender-nonconformity, and that means a lot to me as a gender-noncomforming person. it also "empathetically subverts" the way gender-nonconformity is often treated in media — rather than being treated as an abnormality, it's a natural part of who characters like susie and ralsei are. i wanted tenna's portrayal to come from that same place of heart and earnestness too — so i'm always happy to hear someone was touched by her in that regard! she is very cool, i think!

Actually wait, wouldn't Secret Someone Frisk be afraid of Deltarune ending? After all, if they got kicked out of a world they were the main character in, then whats to say it won't happen again in this one. I can't imagine the cryptic (and way too unhelpful) Gaster explaining much before he added them to Deltarune.

Or maybe they fear the worse option... Kris ends up being booted. After all, they ended up being the main character and were kicked out, so they surely wouldn't want it to happen to someone else. Maybe that's their conflict with the Fun Gang, them either trying to stop the conflict from ever ending so they will never have to risk it OR trying to get the SOUL so that they can be sure only they will suffer from anything. After all, they evidently have a pretty low self esteem (judging the Sans+Papyrus+Flowey save them ask and the Prison asks) so I can imagine them being some kinda martyr, suffering so nobody else will have to.

i mean for frisk them being removed from undertale was bc of the choice at the end, the player choice "i have places to be". they're just an npc now so they probably think theyre safe here :0c but them wanting to keep A Conflict Going or wanting to get the soul to protect Kris does feel like something they'd do :'] i Am just developing this au/theory based on other people's input at this point bc i think i originally wanted to keep stuff vague so i could rework it as chapters came out Until the actual strange someone is revealed ! but frisk trying to do the good/right thing but it going wrong/ their perception of what's good/right being warped feels very. real

also frisk's thing w the soul had to do w their perceived dependency on it ! a thing I've been thinking abt ks frisk has no backstory and no other characters to fill in those gaps, they don't know why they went to mt ebott. the first thing they remember is Falling. they do not remember a point where their actions weren't dictated by the soul, and well having come from a true pacifist ending, the soul did all the right things, they got the good ending ! but now they don't have it and everything is going wrong for them. they've become an antagonist bc they wanted their happy ending. i feel like I'm just waxing poetic but idk i just really enjoy this au/theory there's Intricacies it's all very Intricate to me

a list of things to consider when Deltarune ch 3-5 drops

its almost undertale's anniversary, how about i make a nice little refresher of major things that will more than likely be addressed in the next few chapters shal we? These are kiiiiiinda maybe guaranteed with ch 3-5 but who knows, toby fox might pull a 180 with the writing.

- the hell is going to happen to berdly? is he dead? is he fallen? if he is dead, will he dust like in undertale or are the rules different in this universe? is this just a weird magic coma?

-Noelle's mental state in both snowgrave and pacifist timelines.

- the fact Kris just kinda robbed a public library. as more and more dark worlds will open between chapters, there is going to be more places available. will people notice the little munchkin committing low stakes robbery? -Is Kris going to drag shit from their house to the dark world at the school ? ? ? will Toriel notice???

- Dark worlds at night. there was foreshadowing by Seam. this might get interesting.

- Mettaton asking you to give them something entertaining because it is boring. -whatever the hell Onion San is on about.

- the guy who tells you to practice your knocking.

-the fuck is toriel going to react to ralsei?

-the fact that it is implied that dark worlds are a representation of the struggles of the lightners, ch 3 will absolutely give us a LOT of context about kris and toriel's life. At LEAST Toriel's life at the bare minimum.

-The object inside of Asriel's dresser that depends on what save slot you have. you just turned the house into a dark world, something very very interesting™ is going to happen IF it is possible to go up there. -Toriel's reaction to the magic teas. (possibly) -the next secret boss and egg location. (can't forget!)

-"Mike" and "Tenna". unpopular opinion: i do not care who mike is. Everyone is getting all excited and speculative and i am just like "oh ok neat". If he is a secret boss: neat! why not! I don't have strong opinions on them sorry lol.

-What is the "Weird path" for this chapter and the other two chapters? what the hell is the player going to be able to do to Toriel? what are the implications of the weird paths for Kris? will there even be a weird path for the upcoming chapters?

-"The entirety of Undertale takes place within Toriel's kitchen". (is link to a reddit theory). Undertale? at this time of year at this time of day localized entirely within your kitchen? jokes aside: Ch 3 will more than likely confirm or deny this theory being true. And if this theory IS true i am going. to flip. my shit. a part of me wants it to be dis-proven because I love undertale and I feel like the implications could cheapen the story. Also I hate ANY notion of chara being related to deltarune because I want this to be a unique story on the other hand THE IMPLICATIONS HOLEY SHIT. this is going to be an interesting one.

-Suzie Godzilla. "uh Kat you don't know for sure this is going to- " it's going to happen.

-Confirming or Denying "chess theory". Personally I have no strong opinions on chess theory, the chess theory just kinda seems like a neat easter egg if it were proven true. -Possibly confirming or denying "universal mother theory" or adding onto it. there is a video on you tube about it. A part of me likes the idea that the Antagonists of each dark world can apply to any none, but idk.

-SAN'S FUCKING BROTHER PLEASE LET ME SEE PAPYRUS. the only reason this is in "might not happen" is because i can see toby fox making us wait until the end of the game to see paps or something.

colour? green and purple. i can't choose between them, trust me i've tried. i love them both for different reasons! both equally strong!

aaah writing? i've always been into telling and hearing stories (say that to the 2 school libraries i've eaten through) but funnily enough the thing that got me into writing stories? Undertale!! i had an eisteddfodd in my school i think i was in yr6, and i basically tried to write out the whole plot of Undertale for a story (it was required) and it was suuuuch a breaking point for me tbh. i still see elements in that recreation that have carried over into my writing style today- crazyyyy.

though my actual getting into writing came a bit later (around 2018 on Wattpad...an ErrorInk fanfic that i'm actually rewriting rn! that ship means soooo much to me) i consider it my like....catalyst into writing, even if it was super cringey.

Oof how i got into Undertale? oooh this one. so. like. Before i was into UT i was into other stuff, still games. Basically i was into FNAF and then YanSim (i know....i know....i hate that guy....i was like 10....) and i watched a lot of YT as well! OG YT kid. Chronic Dantdm fan (after this i kept on commenting on his vids asking him to play UT....HE DID. I TAKE PARTIAL CREDIT./hj). I watched Bijuu Mike and Kubz Scoutz for YanSim content and in one of these videos (a Bijuu Mike one) they showcased an easter egg in the game that was a reference to UT (the mouse and cheese bit) and Bijuu said something like 'oh this is from Undertale' and i was like ??? and looked up an Undertale playthrough and watched Jacksepticeyes one and the rest is history....

For Deltarune i was in the UT/UTMV fandom as it came out so i was in with the hype of it, pretty sure i watched Jacksepticeyes playthrough for it as well lol. and played it myself!

For specific UT/DR and UTMV fandom? oooh it was mostly Youtube comment sections. Comic Dubs and crappy AMVs that are just a slideshow with nightcore over it were my jam. When i went over to Wattpad it was pretty similar except now i had stories and ships i could get more immersed into (and the comment sections. good lird)

I also had Amino (i know. i shudder at the thought) and that was pretty good for fandom hubs. joined quite a few UT/DR/UTMV ones. Mostly joined bcs all the Animation Meme YTers were getting sponsered by it (i was also an animation meme kid. still animate sometimes!) but even at my tender age i knew that most of the fandom congregated on Tumblr (the comic dubs had links to tumblr blogs)....but i legit thought it was just a broken website cus i downloaded the app and it didn't work lollll. But hey. i'm here now. That previous experience actually got me to make my current account so. here we are.

worst storyline: i’ll be honest the date 💔 i do like it from the perspective of an aro guy forcing attraction but i still prefer the hangout way more for. obvious reasons

childhood hc: i think he’ll be a child/teen deltarune! and i think he was a lonely (bonely) kid, which is why he wants to be popular so much

what i think he was like as a child: i already kinda answered this but also. i’m an otherworld sans truther and i really have no idea what ut papyrus’s deal is. if the skeletons just showed up one day i really don’t know what that means for papyrus

how would he be as a parent: carlyraejepsans has a great post about this but i think he’d be the fun uncle who loves kids!! also all the monsters are communally raising frisk anyway <3

Professor Cyrus Albright is a representation of the progression of humanity as it marches ever forward (his story culminates in refuting Lucia's ivory-tower offer), and i've been carrying his final monologue with me ever since i first heard it

Least Favourite Thing: the "too pretty for his own good" bit is kinda lame. its not bad and it can be funny, but its very middling

Favourite Line: "I teach my students with the expectation that one day, they will surpass me.", because again, i LOVE the themes of Cyrus's story and that line summarizes them perfectly

brOTP: Partitio is the cop-out answer to this one, but im also fascinated by what her dynamic with Ochette might be cuz like. symbolic representation of all the themes of hope that has seen humanity do terrible things but keeps on truckin' + person that is only beginning to accept that maybe life isn't such a curse after all is a very cool combination

Unpopular Opinion: not unpopular by any stretch of the imagination but it does run counter to one (1) person i've seen, but i think she deserves to, and can, make a full recovery. no shade on the person who wrote that super cool fic in which she was tormented by hallucinations of her brother and said in the fic description that they didnt think she'd recover, but that ain't for me

Least Favourite Thing: the pitch of her voice has lost me a little as time has gone by, nothing major but it's not as charming as it used to be (this is NOT a statement about the accent thing. that bit is fun)

Favourite Line: "Dreams aren't good for nothing" was just a fun line, but "The stars... they're all gone" was delivered EXTREMELY well, so i'm giving it to the latter

Hey, sorry for taking a bit to answer!

First off, if you haven't already, check out the pop culture paganism tag for some general ideas. This post is my favorite for explaining things. That being said, your starting point largely depends on what you're drawn to, what meaning you find in the game, and what you're hoping to become through it. For instance, are you hoping to grow into a more merciful person? More determined? Maybe you want to embody all seven soul traits? Or perhaps you just draw comfort from the characters themselves and want to have some sort of spiritual relationship with them? That's okay too!

Soul searching aside, I would suggest your first move be to pick just one character and try building a relationship with just them. Whichever one you're most drawn to, or whoever most embodies what you're looking for. Try to reach out to them, talk to them, give them offerings, and ask them for guidance. An important thing to keep in mind with pop culture entities, though, is that not all of them would be comfortable being worshipped or treated as a god. Depending on who you're working with, it might be a good idea to try just honoring them as a person and/or mentor until you get a better feel of their boundaries. Once you're comfortable with them and vice versa, you might find yourself drawn to another character, another character may reach out to you in some way, or your first character may introduce another character to you themselves. In my case, for my Deltarune practice, I started with Jevil, who might in Seam for me, who introduced Diamond King to me.

Aside from that, the wonderful thing about Undertale is that it has its virtues built right in. Focusing on mercy and the seven soul traits is a great way to practice Undertale paganism, and the souls/traits themselves could easily be revered in their own right (perhaps as something akin to angels?). For instance, your practice could include embodying one trait for each day of the week. Of course, the characters themselves will have their own lessons to teach you, and you could even call on them as guardian spirits if you need their specific skills.

As for Chara, they're a tricky character to nail down (just look at the fandom). Their associations really depend on how you see them, but in a sense, that could be a trait in and of itself. Chara is the one who calls out to their brother in the final battle and brings him peace, but they're also the one who, after being forced to kill everyone they love, decides that if they're going to do it, they at least want to do it by their own power, and you don't get to change your mind after they've lost everything. They were bitter enough to want to kill the humans who attacked them and Asriel, but they were also willing to sacrifice their life to save the monsters. They are, basically, the grey area between Frisk and Flowey, which is why the player is able to guide them one way or the other.

You can disagree or add your own, but this is a start for what I would give them:

-The colors red, green and gold, red heart shapes, smiley faces, as well as any yellow flowers

-Determination (duh)

-Survival in harsh/abusive situations (it's implied Chara had a very bad upbringing prior to their fall, and got through it by learning to laugh off the pain)

-Self-sacrifice (the whole buttercups thing)

-Doing what must be done (see previous)

-Family (they loved the Dreemurs enough to die for them, and they were the one who calmed Asriel)

-Gaining the upper hand on an abuser ("Since when were YOU the one in control?")

-Similarly, control/being controlled

-Gaining power ("Any time a number goes up, that feeling is me. Chara")

-Destruction and recreation (they do bring the world back if you beg)

-Deals with other entities (you giving them your soul in exchange)

-But relating to the above, inescapable consequences (Soulless pacifist)

-Also in those lines, cursing someone with exactly what they asked for

-Necromancy/ghosts/spirit work/death, because they are themself a ghost stuck to Frisk

-I would argue redemption, since what is the pacifist route if not teaching Chara a better way

-Anger and/or protecting others (them wanting to attack the humans who hurt Asriel)

tw talk of religious trauma and religion in general

the religious connections of dr make me so bonkers. like susie doesn't appear to be very religious but kris' family regularly went to church. they themself may be agnostic or something (they literally asked the priest for cool fruit juice i love them) but asriel was OBSESSED. and it's so,,,,,, Something To Me how ralsei, who's probably the manifestation of kris' desire to be like their older brother, is also pretty religious, but??? in the opposite way??

like kris got told that they were supposed to try and prevent the apocalypse, and failing that, banish what is basically the jesus of their world. and? they don't seem to react at all? coupled with how gaster's signature number is 666, and how the Roaring is explicitly connected to hell,,,, it just turns my

back to kris being agnostic of sorts. considering how their religion about a 'one true path' and how the soul controls them,,,, methinks they view it as a divine act. not necessarily a good thing, but not necessarily a bad thing. it just definitely alters how they feel about it, wondering whether the things they go out of their way to do even matter, like saving susie, or should they just fold in on themselves for the greater good. I Am Chewing On This Thought

last but not least. spamton connecting the Knight to communion, which means remembering acts of the divine by consuming them. does that mean they wish to combine the dark and light world out of love for the angel? do they know about the soul's connection to kris????

anyway rambling over. hope this helped :D

jokes aside i do think a lot of the religious symbolism in deltarune is like... Very striking especially given it mostly being lacking in undertale ASIDE from asriel. other things of note are the devil horns kris wore as a child and noelle literally being in a crucifix like pose at the end of the main route. it feels like a lot of these religious symbols are used to create a sense of unease so far, and unfamiliarity. the idea of the angels heaven being something to banish feels backwards since those are both typically associated with goodness. then again, fighting g-d/gods is a bit of an rpg trope too.

deltarune is a different universe with different rules and this feels like one of the most instant and apparent differences that we aren't in undertale. (and what seems come along with it, like monsters not using magic- feels connected to me... a lot of monster culture seems to have replaced with a facsimile of a small christian town)

i honestly have no idea what kris thinks of it but we do see in the game they have their own morals that they won't break/attempt to uphold even in the face of the soul's control (like closing their eyes when peeking into asriel's room in the mansion and not wanting to take even a couple dollars from their brother's drawer) they seem to have a lot of respect for peoples boundaries whether it's respecting their brothers privacy or asking for a hug from susie and not minding at all when she says "no." i think it shows a lot about what they value (and also interestingly enough, chapter 2 seems to be starting to give Us the option to respect kris' boundaries by showing their reaction to our choices and they also seem to be getting better at acting on their own so i wonder if we are going to get the chance to respect kris' decisions and let them act on their own/work as a team with us... maybe OUR choices don't matter but theirs do... maybe letting them make the choices is what matters....)
