Any tips to have an easier fast?
Mod here. For anyone feeling a little confused, Tish'a B'Av, a fast day, is coming up.
I just want to give a reminder that it isn’t safe for everyone to fast. If you are unsure whether it’s safe for you to fast, talk to your doctor(s) and then your rabbi. If you are struggling with finding meaning or navigating community norms on fast days as someone who doesn’t fast, the ask box and messages are both very, very open to you <3 To our community members with a history of disordered eating that might be exacerbated by posts like this on your dash, please consider adding #fasts to your blocklist. This time, I’m remembering to tag with #eating disorder content warning, but I am less reliable on that tag.

oh hey i never saw that either
hey @really-bonkers i wanna direct you to this months old post about how proactive biden has been in trying to obtain a ceasefire:
which was written before this little moment (a moment which once again proved how little benyamin netanyahu cared about the opinions of other world leaders)
oh hey apparently the un liked that
biden's kept pushing that plan
wow look at this! (why does the top photo make him look so spray tanned lmfao)
and he has high hopes for this deal, and he and his administration are continuing to work towards it every day, yes even after he dropped out of the race
blinken was planning to travel to egypt, qatar, medinas yisrael, and possibly iran, but this trip had to be postponed bc of the threat of an iranian attack on medinas yisrael over tish'a b'av (the saddest day on the jewish calendar). the purpose of this trip was to participate in ceasefire negotiations on august 15
honestly i feel like we aren't talking enough about how much effort the us, egypt, and qatar have put into keeping these negotiations alive, given that both yahiya sinwar and benyamin netanyahu have so much to gain from the war continuing (shoutout to leaders doing things in order to gain/maintain power instead of for the good of the people they supposedly represent. it's a fucking travesty and a tragedy and it makes my skin crawl if i think about it for too long)
https://www.reuters.com/world/middle-east/qatari-egyptian-us-leaders-invite-israel-hamas-resume-talks-aug-15-2024-08-08/ (idk why this one won't generate an embed sorry)
tho i will say there's even tensions between bibi and the guys who are trying to represent him at the ceasefire negotiations, not to mention all the israelis that fucking hate him (this also talks about why this is kinda the last chance to do one of these negotiations for a myriad of reasons)
(one moment i've hit the link limit)
why are people freaking out about the debate biden didnt even do rhat badly

Shabbat Nachamu
Shabbat after Tish'a B'Av (Shabbat of Consolation). The first of seven Shabbatot leading up to Rosh Hashanah. Named after the Haftarah (from Isaiah 40) which begins with the verse נַחֲמוּ נַחֲמוּ, עַמִּי ("Comfort, oh comfort my people")

A white supremacist terrorist with a known history of antisemitic attitudes and a disturbing interest in Nazism attempts to destroy the third oldest synagogue in the UK the day before Tish'a B'Av... and lights himself on fire instead.
Middah k'neged middah, sometimes pretty quickly, too.

how does the fasting work.. when can one eat and drink?
Jewish fasts are split into three types:
Private fasts, minor fasts, and major fasts.
Private fasts are fasts specific to only certain groups of people, that can be broken by holding a public break-fast in the form of a Siyum, a celebration when someone finishes learning a certain portion of Talmud.
The fast that falls into this category is Taanit Bechorim, in which firstborn males fast the day before Passover to commemorate the plague of the firstborns in Egypt.
Minor fasts are fasts scattered throughout the year that commemorate certain events in Jewish history, that tend to be shorter than major fasts and are more lenient about exemptions for fasting. They start at sunrise and end at nightfall.
These are:
Tzom Gedalia, which is the day after Rosh HaShana, which mourns the murder of Gedalia ben Achikam, the governor of the last remaining Jews in the Land of Israel appointed by the Babylonians. After Gedalia was assassinated, the last remaining Jews left the land, effectively sealing the beginning of the Babylonian exile.
Asara B'Tevet, which falls out on the tenth of the month of Tevet, which is today. This fast mourns the beginning of the Babylonian seige on Jerusalem.
Taanit Esther, which is the day before Purim, which commemorates the fast Esther and all the Jewish people fasted before coming before Achashverosh.
Shiv'a Asar B'Tammuz, which is on the 17th of the month of Tammuz, which mourns the breaching of Jerusalem's walls by the Babylonians and the beginning of the raid on Jerusalem.
Major fasts are longer fasts and considered more "serious", and therefore exemptions for who is obligated to fast are a bit more strict.
These are:
Tish'a B'Av, which is on the 9th of the month of Av, which spans from sunset the previous day and ends at nightfall. It mourns the destruction of Jerusalem and the Jewish Temples by the Babylonians and later the Romans. In modern times it's also used to mourn other genocides in Jewish history, especially the Holocaust.
Yom Kippur, which is the holiest day of the year and falls out on the tenth of the month of Tishrei. It's a day of reflection and atonement for the previous year and for the new year. Unlike every other fast, including Tish'a B'Av, all the prohibitions of Shabbat apply to Yom Kippur. Yom Kippur is also called Shabbat Shabbaton, the Shabbat of all Shabbats. Other fast days are also prohibitted from occuring on Friday or Shabbat, and are pushed off if they do fall out on those days. Yom Kippur is never pushed off. If it occurs on Shabbat, then it occurs on Shabbat.
On a fast day, consuming food or water is prohibitted. Some people who can't do a full fast will drink water but not eat food, or will eat less food, or will take a break from other aspects of life, such as social media.

Happy STS!! Are there any major holdiays in your WIP? How do your characters celebrate something like the new year?
Hello and happy STS!!! I'm thinking JPtG will be set during late summer/early fall, so there aren't really any holidays mentioned. It is possible that since Will is Jewish, he may celebrate Tish'a B'Av during the course of the book (but I'm still trying to figure out Jewish holidays and when they happen since they change every year)
As for new years, the adults would all get together in Nixie's house for some drinks. They'd probably also play some pool or horseshoes during the course of the night. Mal would be bored out of their mind, but make an effort to eat as much as they could

A (Full Circle) night
what we see in the moon is a humble mirroring of Light
could you “unveil” your heart in True illumination?
(please read every page, carefully, being intentionally designed to befriend you)
your thoughts and your voice
A blank first page, to be…
(i’ve had to keep my silence in this just as the moon, just like the night sky)
Tumblr media
The August 2022 full moon – a supermoon – rises near sunset on August 11. As seen from around the world, the bright “star” near the full moon is really a planet, Saturn. Earth will fly between Saturn and the sun on August 14, bringing the ringed planet opposite the sun in our sky. Also, look for a true star – Altair in Aquila the Eagle is higher – near the full moon. Chart via John Jardine Goss/ EarthSky.
Also, Thursday night
An excerpt from a post by [The Temple Institute] in Jerusalem:
THE HOLIDAY OF TU B'AV - THE 15TH DAY OF AV!
Thursday evening begins a very special one day festival - Tu b'Av - literally, the 15th (day of the month of) Av. Coming just six days after the 9th of Av, which is without a doubt the saddest day on the Hebrew calendar, Tu b'Av is a complete turnaround from Tish'a b'Av. What is it all about? Why is it so happy?
The mishna taught that "Rabban Shimon ben Gamliel said: There were no days as happy for the Jewish people as the fifteenth of Av and as Yom Kippur. The Gemara asks: Granted, Yom Kippur is a day of joy because it has the elements of pardon and forgiveness, and moreover, it is the day on which the last pair of tablets were given. However, what is the special joy of the fifteenth of Av?"
Our sages cite the following reasons:
5 "the daughters of Israel would go out in borrowed white garments [All of them borrowed, even the rich ones,] so as not to embarrass those who could not afford their own. And the daughters of Jerusalem went out and danced in the vineyards.
And what did the girls say? 'Young man, lift up your eyes and see what to choose for yourself (as a bride). Do not look for beauty; look for family.' (Proverbs 31:30): 'Favor is false, and beauty vain; a G d fearing woman — she is to be praised.' (Ibid. 31): 'Give her of the fruit of her hands, and let her deeds praise her in the gates.'"

And this excerpt from a post by John Parsons:
In addition to our Torah readings, on the 15th day of the month of Av we observe chag ha-ahavah (חַג הָאַהֲבָה), or "the holiday of love." Since it marks the "last" festival of the Jewish year, prophetically the 15th of Av (called Tu B’Av) pictures our marriage to the Lamb of God (Seh Elohim), the LORD Yeshua our beloved Messiah. On a soon-coming day those who belong to the LORD and are faithful to follow His ways will be blessed with the unspeakable joy of an eternally intimate relationship with Him. This is heaven itself - to be in the Presence of the LORD and to be regarded as His beloved (Rev. 19:6-9). Maranatha. [Hebrew for Christians]

A personal note:
As the Bride of the eternal King (the Body, the global Church who has become the Temple of the Spirit of Light) beautifully and mysteriously known as a pure Queen (A new Eve) we await a time of metamorphosis of body at the point of (A secret elopement) for a heavenly marriage to come…
the Spirit and the Bride say, “Come!”
(this is a spiritual marriage and the Spirit is as an engagement ring)
some have fallen “asleep” in the waiting but there will be those who are alive at the time when it arrives.
for the Spirit has been sent to earth to search for a Bride (like a bride was sought for Isaac in ancient times) by realizing that we are first chosen by Love (by God our heavenly Father) and so we “unearth” this pure truth that is (already inside) by opening up to experience a rebirth of the spirit (as a baptism of the heart) and a renewing of the mind, also to experience the sign of the body being baptized in water to mirror this inner transformation
(inside, Anew)
this faith and hope in Love is a divine matter of what we think and “believe…” in the heart and speak (in silence & sound) through a body of garden earth about the Son, making Him our Lord and King. even though we cannot hear our Creator’s voice speaking audibly to us, beyond a few cases, and we cannot see God, yet the invisible Spirit is here to abide within our own as God’s Heart and thought-life to inspire our thoughts and voice, and to illuminate the writing of the Scriptures that point to eternal truth.
(A new covenant of grace)
do you see how writing (in rings) is a proposal of this friendship?
A sacred Book has been formed through much patient time to sew this all Together
(from Genesis to its rebirth)
And we also see marriage on earth reflected in this in our Creator’s design of a husband becoming as “One” body with his wife, a spiritual and physical connection. a physical connection of sex is actually a sacred bond and is the reason for waiting until marriage, thus virginity is pure in our Creator’s eyes just as sex within marriage since He made our bodies, in male and female, and our sexuality.
(the personal writing of my heart as a book has been made to be a mirroring of the eternal tapestry)
A pure Winter’s dream
this is the “calling”
i don’t need to call out loud for someone who is willing to respond (in heart, in body)
writing is the path of a dream that i chose to follow…
i want to make a clear connection with someone’s thought-life to first meet from a distance (to read & write inside)
from the instrumental womb… (A starting line)
someone who is willing to speak of the same even before we see each other face-to-face, even before my voice is heard
the (Waiting) to be found and engaged with (willingly)
please kindly disregard a phone call of the past (tense)
but a seed of writing has been reborn.

Shabbat Nachamu/ שַׁבָּת נַחֲמוּ Shabbat Nachamu (Shabbat after Tish'a B'Av/Shabbat of Consolation)) for Hebrew Year 5781 begins at sundown on Friday, 23 July 2021 and ends at nightfall on Saturday, 24 July 2021. Shabbat Nachamu ("Sabbath of comfort/ing) takes its name from the haftarah from Isaiah in the Book of Isaiah 40:1-26 that speaks of "comforting" the Jewish people for their suffering. It is the first of seven haftarahs of consolation leading up to the holiday of Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year (at Temple Sholom of Ontario) https://www.instagram.com/p/CRjuf5Iqhb9/?utm_medium=tumblr
