My qualms about syncretism
[Just putting down some thoughts I’ve had over the past about syncretism between polytheistic cultures plus some personal theological frameworks]
Of course syncretism as a practice covers a broad range of ideas, among these, one way it can function is by the specific claim that a god worshipped in a certain way in a neighboring culture is actually the same god as one which is worshipped locally, just under a different name. Personally, the questions I have with this specific practice revolve around problems of association, positionality and context. In particular, I have many thoughts about the Odin-Hermes-Thoth trio.
1. Association
Often, the reason I see given in academia for why the ancient world did syncretism is that people saw facets of the “two” deities that were similar or the same, and thus considered them to be the same deity. Setting aside the question of whether that is really a reason for which people did syncretism, if it is, it is an insufficient reason in my opinion. This relates to my own worldview; gods to me are not a conglomeration of their associations, but are in part the connection web that is formed by their associated areas. A god is, in a sense, a thesis; a specific culture/region’s thesis about some aspect of their lived experience. The idea that two deities can be syncretized because they share a certain trait is insufficient to me- say two deities are both related to knowledge, but one might also be related to some other unique aspect that the other is not, and this association changes what the concept of “knowledge” means to the first deity, making its isolation impossible.
2. Positionality
With polytheistic systems, though a coherent structure across time and region is impossible to summarize, each deity at any given time and place is worshipped within a system of other gods, and not in isolation. This means that their position within the local “pantheon” matters in relation to the domains that they oversee. That both Odin and Hermes are associated with roads, travellers, trickery and knowledge is certain, but that Odin is at the same time the All-father whereas Hermes holds the position of one of the Olympians (specifically a son of Zeus) is also an inherent part of their divinity. Positionality-wise Odin might be closer to Zeus, while by association he is closer to Hermes. However, a god is both their positionality and their association and these two cannot be seperate. Or rather, their seperation risks dissolving already existing webs of meaning, and at that point one would have to ask why and for what reason this is necessary/justified.
3. Context
In addition to occupying a positionality related to the other members of their localized system, deities also present a cosmology that is related to the cosmology of their culture at large. To give an example using Hermes again: he and Thoth are both gods of knowledge, magic, language and so forth. In many ways, Hermes and Thoth are very comfortably syncretized. However, the overall cosmology of the Egyptian world is quite different from that of the “Greek” world, including differing ideas of divine order, the place of magic, the function of human beings etc. Because Hermes and Thoth exist within their respective cultural contexts, their representations of knowledge, magic, language etc mean different things. Most notably, the Egyptian cosmology placed a high emphasis on the concept of a cosmic order that even the gods must follow, and a lot of magical workings are based on appeals to this order. This is less prominent in the Greek world. Syncretism at the cost of decontextualizing deities from their related cosmologies might seem okay in the closer geographic regions, but looking at the bigger picture reveals certain absurdities. For instance, while Hermes is both comfortably syncretized with Thoth and with Odin, it is more difficult to imagine that anyone might syncretize Thoth and Odin, seeing as they play quite different roles and characters within their cultural areas.Â
These are some thoughts I have right now, and all are liable to change as I continue to study more about the ancient world and their religious practices.Â

Just another neat detail I found in CDDH.
It could just be the difference in art style, but I like that Boingo's limbs were drawn longer in Thoth during CDDH. Kinda indicating that he's all grown up physically and mentally (though his real growth seemed stunted).

One of my favorite stories of the Ancient Egyptian gods is the one where Thoth, in an attempt to circumvent a curse, made a wager with the deity of the Moon.
From The Hunt Museum website,
"The Egyptian Gods were a quarrelsome lot and Thoth’s role as a mediator and problem solver was frequently called upon. When Ra cursed his daughter Nut, forbidding her to give birth on any day of the year, she came to Thoth for help. Wise old Thoth overcame the curse by gambling with the Moon God (Khonsu) for some of his light. He won 1/72th of the moon’s light. Enough for five extra days in the year, allowing Nut to have her five children (Osiris, Isis ,Geb , Nephthys and Horus) and extending the annual calendar from 360 to 365 days."
I don't know about you, but I watched Marvel's Moon Knight, and now I can't unsee that depiction of Khonsu verbally abusing a baboon (that is glowing with divine muchness) because it beat him at essentially a game of poker.

"You must have seen a battle or two."
Said to any other child with a sword and shield on their back, it might've sounded less like a damnation.
Link huffs a small laugh beneath his breath. It dies quickly, more tired than amused, 'cause the truth is at once so much bigger and just that simple. He thinks the man maybe knows this, or maybe intuits it — the way only someone who's looked in a mirror and seen a similar thing staring back at them can. There aren't many strangers who would give that kind of weight to an observation like that.
Less would connect enough about Link to truly make it.
To the fire crackling between them: he smiles, worn, and tosses the stick he'd been spinning in his fingers. Then he glances up, across the space to the other traveller's side of their shared campsite. He's worse at Common than he is at Hylian, but gestures are fairly ubiquitous, and the flick of his chin as he holds the man's gaze probably doesn't need a voice for the message it sends. Like you.

The full Moon that happens nearest to the fall equinox (September 22nd or 23rd) always takes on the name “Harvest Moon.” Unlike other full Moons, this full Moon rises at nearly the same time—around sunset—for several evenings in a row, giving farmers several extra evenings of moonlight & allowing them to finish their harvests before the frosts of fall arrive.Â
• While September’s full Moon is usually known as the Harvest Moon, if October’s full Moon happens to occur closer to the equinox than September’s, it takes on the name “Harvest Moon” instead. In this case, September’s full Moon would be referred to as the Corn Moon.
This time of year—late summer into early fall—corresponds with the time of harvesting corn in much of the northern United States. For this reason, a number of Native American peoples traditionally used some variation of the name “Corn Moon” to refer to the Moon of either August or September.Â

The name Mabon comes from the Welsh/Brythonic God Mabon Ap Modron, who's name means "Divine/great Son", However, there is evidence that the name was adopted in the 1970s for the Autumn Equinox & has nothing to do with this celebration or this time of year.
• Though many cultures see the second harvest (after the first harvest Lughnasadh) & Equinox as a time for giving thanks before the name Mabon was given because this time of year is traditionally when farmers know how well their summer crops did & how well fed their animals have become. This determines whether you & your family would have enough food for the winter. That is why people used to give thanks around this time, thanks for their crops, animals & food
Some believe it celebrates the autumn equinox when Nature is preparing for the winter months. Night & day are of equal legth & the God's energy & strength are nearly gone. The Goddess begins to mourn the loss she knows is coming, but knows he will return when he is reborn at Yule.
Related festivals:
• Sukkot- Is a Torah-commanded holiday celebrated for seven days, beginning on the 15th day of the month of Tishrei. It is one of the Three Pilgrimage Festivals on which Israelites were commanded to make a pilgrimage to the Temple in Jerusalem. Originally a harvest festival celebrating the autumn harvest, Sukkot’s modern observance is characterized by festive meals in a sukkah, a temporary wood-covered hut, celebrating the Exodus from Egypt.
• Mid-Autumn festival- September 17th
Is also known as the Moon Festival or Mooncake Festival. It is a traditional festival celebrated in Chinese culture, similar holidays are celebrated by other cultures in East & Southeast Asia. It is one of the most important holidays in Chinese culture; its popularity is on par with that of Chinese New Year. The history of the Mid-Autumn Festival dates back over 3,000 years.  On this day, it is believed that the Moon is at its brightest and fullest size, coinciding with harvest time in the middle of Autumn.
During the festival, lanterns of all size and shapes – which symbolize beacons that light people's path to prosperity & good fortune – are carried & displayed. Mooncakes, a rich pastry typically filled with sweet-bean, egg yolk, meat or lotus-seed paste, are traditionally eaten during this festival. The Mid-Autumn Festival is based on the legend of Chang'e, the Moon goddess in Chinese mythology.
• Thanksgiving- This is a secular holiday which is similar to the cell of Mabon; A day to give thanks for the food & blessings of the previous year. The American Thanksgiving is the last Thursday of November while the Canadian Thanksgiving is celebrated in October
• The Oschophoria- Were a set of ancient Greek festival rites held in Athens during the month Pyanepsion (autumn) in honor of Dionysus. The festival may have had both agricultural and initiatory functions.
-Amidst much singing of special songs, two young men dressed in women's clothes would bear branches with grape-clusters attached from Dionysus to the sanctuary of Athena Skiras & a footrace followed in which select ephebes competed.
Ancient sources connect the festival and its rituals to the Athenian hero-king Theseus & specifically to his return from his Cretan adventure. According to that myth, the Cretan princess Ariadne, whom Theseus had abandoned on the island of Naxos while voyaging home, was rescued by an admiring Dionysus; thus the Oschophoria may have honored Ariadne as well. A section of the ancient calendar frieze incorporated into the Byzantine Panagia Gorgoepikoos church in Athens, corresponding to the month Pyanopsion (alternate spelling), has been identified as an illustration of this festival's procession.

"I didn't, no. But a..."
"I hate him and his lot because they're fucking cultists, all right? Because they corrupt people, the way he's trying to do it with you right now. I hate them because they kill people, too. Because they're fucked in the head. Because they're less than the filth they've brought along with their bullshit fucking 'rituals'. Or are trying to bring al..."
"Oh, is that how you view him? Really? Filth?" Matt interrupts, half laughing, half angry now, and so very much offended by that word in particular. The first time there's that shift in him. Lance ignores him and keeps looking at the road ahead instead, teeth gritted, lips a thin line. Half surprised that even now, even after this, it still hasn't made an appearance, doesn't even say anything. His gaze is fixed on Miriam when she says that dreaded fucking word. Hospital. Putting something inside of him. Something that still isn't fucking doing anything. Why?
"Miriam" he tries to interrupt her, half pleading and at least trying to sound soothing still, half warning her now. The look on his face as well as the sound of his voice saying it all. Mighty thin ice.
"I am begging you not to listen to another word he says."
"No. Do listen" Matt raises his voice, the niceness gone altogether. What is left is a fierce look on his face now, as both men glare daggers at each other through the rear view mirror all over again.
"Let me tell you all about dear Sean right here, hm? He's not like us and never will be. And I'm guessing he's been doing the same thing to you that he has done with everyone else in his pathetic excuse of a life. Lying. Not believing in anything but money and himself. Talking all high and mighty about corruption and madness and killing people when it's him who killed one of my friends in a psychiatric hospital. I am not lying to you here, Miriam. He is. We're not a cult. Founded on the basis of one, maybe. But we're a society. Devoted. Honest with each other. Honest about what needs to be done."
"Now who's the one scaring her, huh? Do us a favor and just shut the fuck up already."
"Yes, because that's all you want, isn't it, Sean. Hearing yourself talk. Making this about yourself. Telling us to shut up when it's you who ought to."
"Fuck you."
Both men, scoffing, utterly disgusted by each other. Lance, choosing to keep his eyes fixed on the road, trying to come up with a way to stop this. Cause an accident? Drive into a ditch? Flash the lights to grab someone's attention? What the fuck is he supposed to do? While Matt focuses back on their confused and frightened passenger.
"Now. I'm sorry, Miriam. Back to your question. You see, it wasn't just something that got inside him. It wasn't filth either. He's carrying a literal god inside him. Someone from another world. One that is so much bigger than ours. And yes, this is why I'm here. We're getting him back."
"The fuck you're gonna do."
Suddenly, the gun is aimed at the back of Lance's skull, pressing right into his skin. The click of the safety coming off making it perfectly clear that things are really getting heated now. If it's even possible, Lance tenses up a lot more, the confusing mixture of fear and wrath distorting his features completely.
"Has Andromeda ever told you how we're getting him back, Sean? Well, it involves getting rid of you. Your talking, your thinking, everything that makes you...well, you. Let me spell it out for you. That means that you'll have to d..."
Just like that, the gun is gone even faster than it was drawn just a moment ago. Flung away from the base of Lance's skull so violently that it leaves Matt's hand through the sound of breaking bones, a gush of blood from his fingers and the man's agonized scream. Followed by the metallic clank of the gun, landing right in Miriam's lap with the invisible toss.
Miriam is spellbound by the tableau of hatred that unfolds between her two companions. Big, questioning eyes flicker back and forth between Sean and Matt. She understands nothing of the layered accusations and barbs. A whole history is wrapped up in the bite of that fucking bitch and a lifetime of conviction purrs back when Matt forbids such blasphemy. It is bizarre to witness, these men who know each other so intimately that it utterly shuts her out. They could pull her in but even then she’d only be limping after whatever horror has tied them together. Miriam sits like a wounded fawn before them, half-empty, soaking in the vibrations of the car body around her. She’s set dressing. But her gaze sweeps over the clawing grasp that anchors Matt’s hand to Sean’s shoulder. She watches him dig in. Anger. Indignation. Something even greater, something that dives beneath the skin.
Sean looks ready to burst into flames. It’s a miracle he doesn’t crush the steering wheel in his white-knuckled grip. She instinctively leans back. The violence of men is sudden and directionless, another unexplained event in her life. She ducks in anticipation. She is scared, she has to admit. Matt’s got her right there. But Sean’s pleading rings louder: Don’t listen. Like words alone could poison her mind. Like she could get infected by a stray opinion. Matt focuses on her again as if he just remembered their captive audience and resumes his explanation of an uprooted, upturned life steeped in morbid faith. She looks at Matt with a strange glint of familiarity.
He sounds so much like home. What a cruel trick. He whispers the litany her father has been preaching on the radio, on the TV, for years: I can show you. The savior begging on the street corner to the sin-choked masses. But Miriam is not that, is she? Divinity took her in its mouth and spat her back out. What use is her belief if she can’t bear it? She tried to do what she had to. She preached the sermons and prayed to all the angels. She killed the bull. She watched the red blood vomit forth. She slit its throat and never asked why it cried like a boy when it died. And she was a good daughter. But the filth found her anyway. Born stainless, some big animal tracked mud all through her soul.
All this while she stares back at Matt, her harrowed eyes melting like glaciers into a soft, aching gaze. She almost beseeches, she almost begs. There is something cloying to it, something sweet like nectar. No, not quite nectar. Maybe decay. Something that draws flies. You’d never think that she had a fork aimed at Matt’s throat no fifteen minutes ago with how she looks at him now. Belly up, roadkill waiting for the vulture.
“Did you show Sean?” She asks, dreamily direct. “Is that why he hates you?” It could be a thoughtless remark, the question posed by a child. But she glances at Sean, she does. The expression in her eyes is far more concrete there. She is dissecting them both. “Because of the hospital? Something got inside of him, do you want it back?”
