Demetrius has been hanging out around the Bell Tower Courtyard for quite some time now. He is waiting for @ask-garreth-weasley and the only reason the wizard came here earlier was that he had nothing better to do, his classes done for the day. The weather went from simply cloudy to rainy to almost sunny in a short period of time. The little alcoves on the left-hand side after leaving the tower sheltered him from the rain while it lasted.
Not that Meech is bothered by the rain. His broom, however, is already in a rather miserable state as it was put together from at least two completely different brooms. As of right now Meech is sitting not far from the wall, his cloak is thrown to the ground: Demetrius does not particularly care if it gets wet while he is tinkering with the broom.
To somebody who is not familiar with the flying brooms, this one might seem rather normal. Meech made sure all the wooden components are fitted snuggly into the metal coil surrounding the head of the broom at its base. A dark red rope is encircling the lower part of the handle to make it sturdier until Meech saves up enough coins for a better saddle. Not a thread out of line, not a twig the wrong length, not a speckle of dirt present. The only problem with his broom now is that it cannot actually fly. Not yet.
With an old but rather sharp-looking pocket knife in his capable hands, the Gryffindor is carving out a barely visible intricate pattern on the handle, his mind elsewhere.

#873: Bell & West Towers Breakdown
Hello, me again with yet another castle breakdown tomfoolery, as per requested by the amazing @the-magiarcheologist. 💙🦅
Other breakdowns: >>>Faculty Tower | >>>DADA Tower
Compared to the other two towers, neither Bell nor West Tower have anything of peculiarity, however, it's worth noting a few things here and there and about them nonetheless. This is going to be a long one, as I included North Hall and the Map Chamber. ^ ^
Let's start with the brief overlook of the castle's exterior:
Red sections of the castle + Greenhouse are out of the focus of this post, but if you're interested in me covering them, follow either of the link or make a request! :3
Not going to lie, I thought this post would be rather short, as half of the Bell tower is a hollow void:
and upper floors of the West tower are nothing more but a veneer:
The Music Room's stained glass pattern doesn't translate to the castle's exterior:
It wouldn't be fair to leave it at that, I thought. So let me quickly break down the remaining parts of the North Hall -- its noodle underground level, full of undercrofts, halls, and subsequently, the Map Chamber. But before that, me personal thump-thump at the forehead: Long Gallery is going right under the Library and Central Hall fountain area:
The Medusa Painting Room has a window that simply shouldn't let in any light yet it does change throughout the day despite literally being situated in the castle's dungeons:
Same visual tee-hee seen on the back window in the Fig's classroom.
Transfiguration Courtyard's dragon fountain likely hides the skybox :3
And almost directly underneath it sits the Alchemy classroom:
@boxdstars' favourite location is directly underneath History of Magic classroom:
I'm sorry for the overexposure, lightning engine is very funky when sticking around out-of-bounds in these areas.
Remember this little serene room in the wine cellar's undercroft?
Damp mossy walls, pools on the cobblestone and dim light suggest this room must be located somewhere underneath or near the lake or other body of water (or be able to accumulate lots of ground water).
While it is, in fact, located near the small lake seen in the bird's eye view mapping above and in the DADA Tower post, it is put to the side of it -- and its light source probably shouldn't exist:
And if you take it higher, a wooden floor appears:
a small strife to the side reveals the Staff's room:
Fig meant it literally when he said,
To think it was beneath us all this time.
:D
Outside the Map Chamber you can spot the Athenaeum, some unused parts of the flooring and this door at the other side:
The Chamber itself is located directly underneath this lake:
Curiously, if you move camera around, professors from the portraits will scale down to their cutscene sizes! :D And they will re-scale back when you get close enough!
You can notice it with other portrait characters, for example, this is the man from the frame in the Pungent Passage:
Grace Pinch-Smedley, the girl from the Lost Astrolabe quest, can be spotted on the lake's pier. Might she had more dive&retrieve quests? Suspected something lied beneath the still water? To think, her tasks and Nerida's interest in merpeople might've eventually intersected.
Tools used:NVIDIA Ansel & UETools' Commands.

📍 𝗖𝗵𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗼𝗳 𝗣𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗮, 𝗖𝗵𝗼𝗿𝗮 - 𝗙𝗼𝗹𝗲𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗿𝗼𝘀
The beautiful church of Panagia is the most famous church of Folegandros island, Cyclades. It is located on a fabulous spot above Chora offering an excellent view to the island and the sea. A stone zigzag path starts from Pounda Square Chora and goes up to the church in about 15 min walk.
This church is dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and was possibly constructed on the ruins of an ancient temple. In fact, marble parts of this temple were used as building material for the church and visitors can see ancient inscriptions and bases of statues in the interior and the courtyard of the church. The exact year of the construction of the church is not known. However, a marble sign says that it was renovated in 1687 and it took its present form in 1821.
The architecture of the church is traditional Cycladic and the exterior is whitewashed. This is a one-aisle basilica with many domes and a tall bell-tower. The interior has fine frescoes, a marble throne for the archbishop and a marble icon screen. In the past, the church was the katholikon of a female monastery.
The silver icon of Virgin Mary inside the church is believed the be miracle-working. The legend says that in 1790, 18 boats of Algerian pirates were about to get ashore. The desperate residents of Folegandros went to the church to pray for their lives to Virgin Mary when a strong northern wind blew and sank all the boats of the pirates, of whom all got drown. Since then, the locals consider Virgin Mary the protector of their island.

➥ Belegerande's School for the Arcane: Features (1)
the school nestled into the mirewood of belle valley is a mysterious one indeed, fraught with everlengthening, everchanging hallways, corridors, atriums, grand archways, stairways, and many more of such that lead nowhere; wrought iron draped in vines and brachio tendrils, magnificent courtyards and personalized reading nooks for all the little bookworms, mystical wallpaper with printed animals and flowers that move, paintings that watch your every step, dark corners and empty rooms, spidery stained glass and doors of intricately carved wood; classrooms lined with skulls and bones from which necromantic knowledge can be gleaned, all well-versed in the ways of death magic, a hint at the ancestor worship once prevalent among nightfolk - now reduced to pettily cackling at students who don't pay attention; lantern rooms, blue rooms, red rooms, whole and isolated libraries, glass rooms, study rooms, ornate bathrooms, well-stocked supply closets for every alchemical need; walls lined with trophies of alligators, crocodingos, beholders, red wolves, snallyghasters, frogmen, and more, specimen jars and skeletons, skins and pelts, oddities, anatomical diagrams, wrought iron light fixtures and creepy crown molding; and plenty more.
but there are some aspects of the school's grounds that stick out a fair bit more than the rest, such things that a student would first babble on about as soon as they could. from the bottle tree to the frog butlers, the talking skulls in the mudriver shallows, the stained glass staircase that never seems to end, the verdant entrance to house la fey, the clock room, the pygmy fey living in the tree in the central courtyard, the inverted tower beneath the greenhouses, the doll room, and more!
the frog butlers function as a sort of p.a./alarm system for belegerande's, allowing the headmaster to give morning announcements while students are shuffling off for their first classes; their secondary function as an alarm system was first put into place as a means of notifying anyone nearby of intruders, but these days, they serve best to catch students sneaking out. the frog butlers, upon sighting a troublemaking student, will begin to scream like screaming bullfrogs - just inordinantly louder. they are located all throughout the grounds and are sometimes easy to miss.
the bottle tree is an old, very large willow tree near the greenhouses on the eastern end of the school, adorned in hanging glass bottles filled with notes, letters, and wishes. it's long been a tradition at belegerande's that each year's graduating class leave a few bottles for the tree, over time creating a stained glass portrait in the grass should the sun break through the willow branches at just the right angle. this small tradition is more or less a goodbye and an imparting of hopes, plans, and dreams for the future. it can come across as a little pretentious, but the tradition stands. any caught attempting to take the bottles down or harming the tree will, probably, have a few branches swing glass at them. there's a rumor the branches will close in and trap the person inside, or strangling them - one of the two.
the never-ending starcase is a stairwell comprised of stained glass, spiraling in a double-helix going both up and down as far as the eye can see. the staircase begins on steps of glass steadily tapering the higher up you go, seemingly bringing the stair to an end, but it opens back up again, this time with stained glass surrounding the stairwell, and this repeats ad infitum. it can and will quite literally go on forever and is very easy to get lost in, with no visible entrances or exits or ways to get off - unless you already know exactly where you're headed. for years, this stairwell has long been used by the adventurous types happy to get lost, or the firskier types who want to take their romance to the next level, as teens do. sneaking off to the staircase because no one's going to go looking for you, but everyone's got a pretty good idea of what sort of trouble you got into in there.
the clock room is an...unfortunate place to stumble upon. it's full of clocks, which, on the surface, seems utterly harmless - but the clock room is different. clocks of all shapes and sizes line its walls floor to cieling, wall to wall, some standing alone in clusters, some hanging from the cieling, and the size of the room goes on and on. no discernable exits, and you cannot go back the way you came. the constant ticking in the background is enough to make one begin to lose their grip, imagine how long it takes for the heart to sync up with every stutter and twitch of the minute and hour hands. a few minutes will feel like hours, even days, but the room inevitably spits you back out into the hallway because...you're not a clock.
the inverted tower hidden beneath the greenhouses is an old and decidedly ancient place, considered a relic from the days alistair belegerande first settled in the area. built of carven stone and iron. said to be where alistair's private study was located, but it was flooded long ago, now caked with mud, moss, and full of water. the potential it goes deeper than just a few tens of feet is high, considering alistair's wealth of secrets. the entrance to it has since been boarded up and built over, hidden by the school's ever-expanding, everchanging halls. if a few students are brave enough, they might uncover a secret or two for themselves.
the doll room is a room located somewhere within the school nearest house scrivener, decorated in numerous colorful fabrics, streamers, and other such party favores - and dolls, of nearly every make, some cursed, some possessed, and some friendly. much like the clock room, it is almost entirely filled with dolls, with some hanging from the cieling, sitting on near endless shelves, tapdancing across the floor, there are simply dolls everywhere. some cracked and dirty, many from different time periods, some clean and untouched, some burned or otherwise damaged, and all are there to protect yet another school secret. who would willfully walk into a room of dolls that watch, haunt, and curse your every step? scream, howl, and yell at you? trip you on their strings, trick you into all manners of things--
the pygmy fey living in the live oak tree in belegerande's central courtyard are no larger than a half-pinky's length. they skitter about the roots sticking out of the soil, in and out of their little homes; students offer the pygmy fey miniature furniture and bits of food when they can, even shrinking full-size items into 'family size for pygmy fey' and leaving them on the roots for them to find. aside from that, students and faculty are not in any way allowed to go near the pygmy fey as they are too small to survive any possible upsets, let alone even a single person's step in the wrong direction. these fey have been living in this tree since twenty or so after the school's founding and are thus protected permanent residents. they have tiny wings alternating between butterfly, bee, moth, and dragonfly styles, though there are some, particularly males, who don't have any at all. in any case, it's best to leave them be - a fey curse is always a particularly nasty one.
#☿ || Headcanons.#♞ // Verse: Belegerande's.#/ the talking skulls in the necromancy class are only scary at first#/ every time after its like a badly written episode of the golden girls#/ like the head museum in futurama sksksk#/ the never ending staircase is based off of something from my high school like that's all legit#/ anyway just some ideas for the school; lune helped with the never-ending staircase!

Приоратский дворец. Гатчина. | Priory Palace. Gatchina. (2) by Vladimir Tro
Via Flickr:
The Priory Palace or Castle is the original palace in Gatchina. Often called a Priory (from the French prieuré - “small monastery, monastic landholding”). Built in 1799 by architect N. A. Lvov. The name “Priory Palace” was assigned to the Priory in the 20th century. The Priory was built in the style of Russian architecture of the last third of the 18th century, called the pre-romantic movement. The building is a stylization of medieval Catholic monasteries. The role of the temple bell tower is played by the tower; all buildings are united into one by a courtyard and a blank fence. The Priory, like the monasteries, is located in a secluded place. The monastic character is emphasized by the ascetic interior decoration.

The Last Interlude
Interlude: Promise
Second bell rang. Morning meal was over, though Eunji had spent most of it pushing the grits around her plate. No one else agreed that their flavor was overpoweringly earthy, and many of the other scribes called it the best they had ever tasted. She forced herself to eat them because it was marginally less painful than starving, and they elbowed each other and laughed at the expression twisting her face. Once the torture was over, she took the plate to the washing area, where one of the cleaners, seeing her face, asked what her problem was now.
Most of the others had to rush to their assignments, but Eunji knew she had plenty of time. She arrived outside of Gibb’s quarters and sat down to wait, and the next bell was clanging by the time the sorcerer emerged yawning. Their robes in disarray, hair sticking out in spikes, they made their way to the mage’s dining hall to pick up two apples, same as every day.
“Long day ahead of us,” they said through another yawn. “Eunji, what time is the meeting?”
“Six bells, sir.”
They sighed. “Another late night. I know you’re not supposed to, but the only way I’m getting up tomorrow is if you go into my room toss me out of bed.”
“Water seemed more effective last time, sir.”
“So it did. Well, you’re the expert.”
She smiled at what she was fairly certain was only a joke, but Gibb was half-asleep and their facial expressions impossible to parse. She followed them down the stairs and into the courtyard, the heat of the stone path baking through her sandals. Once a tower rose up from the mountain, before the gods leveled it to remind humanity that divinity was not for them. The base of the tower was still on top of the mountain, but it could not be seen from their location, in spite one of the other scribes insisting it was possible if you found exactly the right position. Eunji did not understand why the girl kept insisting when it was so blatantly untrue, and why the other scribes all laughed at Eunji and not the one who was telling these wild tales.
In any case, the ruins of the pillar were for magic users only, and even they had rules about who was let in, when they were allowed in, and for what purpose, all things a scribe would not be privy to. She could only guess from what she overheard while transcribing through the endless interviews Gibb held. Warriors flocked from all over the world in search of the supposed Ultimate Magic the sorcerers were creating, and over the past five years, Eunji had seen thousands of them. Most of the time, Gibb told her to throw out her notes at the end of the day, as there wasn’t anything worth saving. When they did ask her to save them, it wasn’t always the best warriors, or those with any fighting skill at all. A sickly boy from Fielle who’d never held a blade in his life was accepted just last week.
What were they after? Eunji couldn’t hazard a guess. The motives of people, even those she had known for years, eluded her. Perhaps that was why Gibb kept her around all this time. She could not gossip about what she did not understand.
Dozens of people waited outside Silenes Hall, many leaping to their feet as the two passed by and when Gibb chucked the cores of their apples over their shoulder, the people scrambled as if it had to be important. Eunji entered the Hall behind Gibb, preparing her tablets papers while the sorcerer situated themself behind the desk. They seemed awake now, at least.
“Send the first one in,” they said.
They always left it for her to pick, and her stomach tied in knots as she shoved open the doors and walked back outside. There were so many to choose from, all with the same hungry expression. She generally went for whoever seemed calmest, and she opted for a woman sitting on a rock wringing her hands. A man spit at her, and Eunji decided he could wait outside forever. Perhaps one of the other scribes would pass them through, but she hoped not.
She brought the woman in before Gibb, a short woman with dark skin covered in freckles. She stood in front of the sorcerer, back straight like a soldier, hands clasped behind her.
“You may have a seat,” Gibb said, gesturing to the chair. The woman seemed to regard it with some measure of suspicion, perhaps because she knew enough about magic to know the runes under her feet compelled those on it to tell the truth. In which chase, she didn’t know enough to realize she didn’t actually need to be seated for the spell to work.
Her mouth twisted up, the woman sat, hands tightly gripping the arm rest. Eunji picked up her stylus and prepared to record.
“Your name,” Gibb said.
“Viga,” the woman said.
“And you are from?”
“Originally, Caspurin, but I spent most of my life in Hannis.”
They went on like that for several minutes, Gibb asking gentle probing questions and Viga responding in short, succinct sentences like she was prying the words from her tongue. Most who came were escaping unhappy lives and she was no different. Her family lost everything they owned to floods, and her only escape from starvation was becoming an indentured soldier. Though the woman’s voice remained controlled, there was an anger to her features, her dark eyes blazing hotter at every word revealed.
“I have to assume you understand we are creating the most powerful magic ever known,” Gibb said. “Why do you think you are worthy of this power?”
“Because I can do it,” Viga said, seeming to spit out the words. “The one lesson life has taught me is how to handle myself. I’m strong, I’m capable, I can do what needs to be done. And I won’t abuse it.” She added this last almost as an afterthought. They continued talking for several more minutes and Viga left the room looking pleased with herself, but Gibb told the scribe to set aside the tablet. They did not tell her to erase it, which meant she still had hope working for one of the magic factions as a soldier, but as a candidate, she was not suitable.

The beauty of Teppakulam is especially highlighted during the annual Float Festival (Teppam Festival) held in January or February. During this festival, the tank is adorned with thousands of lamps, and the reflection of the lights on the water creates a mesmerizing sight. The deities from the Meenakshi Amman Temple are brought to the tank on elaborately decorated floats, making it a spectacular event filled with devotion and cultural vibrancy .

Dublin Delights: Discovering Ireland’s Capital City
Dublin, Ireland's vibrant and storied capital, is a city where ancient history meets contemporary charm. From its lively streets filled with music and laughter to its centuries-old castles and cathedrals, Dublin offers an enchanting experience that pulls you into the heart of Irish culture. My journey through Dublin felt like stepping into a world where every corner tells a story, and every pub welcomes you with a warm smile and a pint of Guinness. Here's a day spent uncovering the delights of this charismatic city.
Morning: Trinity College and the Book of Kells
My exploration of Dublin began at the iconic Trinity College, a historic university founded in 1592. As I walked through its grand, cobblestoned courtyards, the college's magnificent architecture transported me to a bygone era. However, the highlight of my visit was the Book of Kells, an ancient manuscript housed in Trinity's Old Library. This intricately decorated Gospel book, dating back to around 800 AD, is one of Ireland's most treasured cultural artifacts. The Old Library itself, with its towering wooden shelves lined with ancient volumes, is a breathtaking sight.
After immersing myself in centuries of history, I wandered through St. Stephen's Green, a lush public park just a short walk from Trinity. The peacefulness of the gardens, with their swans gliding across ponds and locals enjoying a morning stroll, offered a perfect moment of serenity amidst the bustling city.
Midday: Dublin Castle and Christ Church Cathedral
Next, I made my way to Dublin Castle, a symbol of British rule until Ireland's independence in the 20th century. Although the castle's exterior is a blend of different architectural styles, the State Apartments within are richly adorned and provide insight into the city’s political history. The Chester Beatty Library, located on the castle grounds, is a treasure trove of rare manuscripts and artworks, further deepening my appreciation for Dublin’s heritage.
From the castle, I headed to Christ Church Cathedral, one of Dublin's oldest and most beautiful buildings. Founded in 1030, this stunning Gothic cathedral is not only a place of worship but also a repository of history. Walking through the crypt, I discovered medieval artifacts, and the echo of the cathedral's bells seemed to carry whispers of the past. The intricate stained-glass windows and stone architecture left me in awe of the craftsmanship that has stood the test of time.
Afternoon: The Guinness Storehouse and Temple Bar
A visit to Dublin wouldn't be complete without experiencing its most famous export: Guinness. The Guinness Storehouse, located at St. James's Gate Brewery, offers an immersive journey through the history of this iconic stout. The multi-story museum walks you through the brewing process, the evolution of Guinness advertising, and, most importantly, offers a perfect pint at the Gravity Bar. From the bar, I enjoyed panoramic views of Dublin's skyline while sipping on the freshest Guinness I’ve ever tasted.
With the afternoon slipping into evening, I made my way to Temple Bar, Dublin's cultural quarter. Known for its lively atmosphere, cobbled streets, and traditional Irish pubs, this area pulses with energy. Musicians played live traditional tunes, and the air was filled with the warmth of laughter and conversation. I joined in the revelry at a local pub, where I enjoyed hearty Irish stew and soaked in the joyous spirit of Dublin's nightlife.
Evening: Ha’penny Bridge and River Liffey Stroll
As the night approached, I crossed the famous Ha'penny Bridge, an iconic pedestrian bridge spanning the River Liffey. The bridge, named after the half-penny toll that was once charged to cross it, is a symbol of the city’s past and present unity. Strolling along the river, I watched as the lights of Dublin reflected on the water, creating a magical glow that captured the heart of the city.
I ended my day with a walk along the riverside, appreciating the blend of modern developments and historical architecture that defines Dublin. The charm of the city lies not just in its monuments but in the people, whose warmth and friendliness make you feel like a welcome visitor at every turn.

Day 8: Cordoba!
The challenge of maneuvering our tiny Fiat out of Seville preceded an hour and a half scenic drive to Cordoba. Through the foothills of the Morena mountains and alongside hillsides of bailed hay, sunflower fields and olive groves we arrived at this important Roman city and a major Islamic center in the Middle Ages. Cordoba was once a spot of peaceful coexistence of three different cultures: Jews, Muslims and Christians and presents today with a melange of the three.
The Alcázar of Córdoba, a medieval fortress located in the historic centre of Córdoba, served as one of the primary residences of Isabella I of Castile and Ferdinand II of Aragon. Though the inside was a bit underwhelming, the gardens were magnificent! Afterwards: lunch and a stroll through colorful village lanes lined with all varieties of potted flowers.
Highlight of the day: La Mezquita, an immense mosque (turned cathedral) dating from 784 A.D., featuring a columned prayer hall and older Byzantine mosaics. In 1236 it became a Catholic church and many icons, knaves, and Christian symbols were applied over the stunning Moorish architecture. The original minaret was converted to a bell tower and courtyard added to this now UNESCO World Heritage Centre.
Another 94 degree day full of history, architecture, art, nature and culture resulted in ending our day with a wine and cheese dinner on the couch. Very satisfying : )

Favorite Quotes - Queen of Hearts pt. 2
“He had murdered her beloved brother, Charles—once the infamous Mad Hatter—by throwing him out a window.”
“They knew Wardley, the love of her life, had promised to come for her”
“These trees of the Twisted Wood knew who drew the location of the stars night after night.”
“I will learn to survive, she thought. I will wait for Wardley and then we will find a boat and sail to the Other Worlds.”
“I will take Wardley here one day, she thought, if I can find it again.”
Several trunks twisted accusingly in her direction.
“I’m sorry, I’m sorry, forgive me.” She rested her now-bleeding hand against the raw wood, feeling the scars.
“Morte stepped back and let out a bellow. It was a deep, terrible sound, a war cry, and it chilled Dinah to the bone”
“Cradling the wet pelt in her arms, Dinah brought it before Morte”
“she absently had watched a red-striped otter flit in and out of a stream”
“The trees had converged in a thick canopy of flowering branches, interweaving with each other to create a solid tunnel of flowers”
“He was running because he could; from his mouth erupted happy whinnies. His body flowed like water”
“This time she was able to enjoy it—the world flying past, the greens and purples of the tunnel blending”
“I’m flying! she thought.
Daring to reach one hand above her head, she let her fingers trail the heads of thousands of fuchsia orchids”
“Charles’s body, lying broken on a stone slab. His beloved servants, Lucy and Quintrell, their throats”
“The sound of the trumpets blaring from the castle and the Cards who had swarmed out of it, so ready to kill their princess.”
“where one of the Heart Cards she had killed sat on a log, softly playing a lute, a cat lounging lazily on his shoulder.”
“Dinah hadn’t been allowed to touch her mother, or even to go near her bedside. She stood sobbing in the doorway”
“eyes finally trained on Dinah as she whispered her good-byes”
“Be gentle, my dear, take heart. Be a good queen. Take care of your brother.”
“I will. I love you. I love you.”
The hint of a smile brushed across Davianna’s face. “I love you too. . . .”
“bells were ringing throughout the kingdom, and the sound of them rose up through the courtyard”
“Long live the future Queen of Wonderland.” He placed the crown on her head, the heat of it scorching”
“Harris carried her out of the room, and as he turned, Dinah was given one last glance at her mother’s face, her beauty siphoned away by death”
“could see the fear in Harris’s eyes as the hot crown was laid on her head.”
“She watched silently as a fiery red hawk danced and dipped over the horizon, such a thing of beauty.”
“rays of sunlight shot through the tree, and suddenly it hummed with life, as if lit from inside”
“The house was one large circular room with a beautiful high-vaulted ceiling. At the front of the room sat a cold fireplace, cozied up to a sitting area”
“She said a silent thanks to whoever baked this bread and grew these onions”
“Broken jars of the amber tree syrup littered the ground around him. Dinah felt all the air rush out of her lungs”
“As he ran, the sun disappeared over the Yurkei Mountains and all was black”
“but she would not be taken to the Black Towers. She would force them to kill her, and she would try her best to kill her father.”
“That was her only purpose on this night; She would avenge her brother”
“Hide,” whispered a voice in the darkness. “If you want to live, don’t fight. Hide.”
“He killed Charles, she thought. And I will kill him now, a shadow in the darkness. Yes, my king, come ever closer.”
“pressed herself against his black coat, becoming invisible once more. Black on black, a shadow at midnight.”
“She dreamed of a deck of cards on a glass table, being played by a black glove”
“Hearts. Spades. Diamonds. The king. The king. The king.”
“It wasn’t my toy. It was for my brother.”
The Spade grimaced.
“No, yeh don’t. That handsome stable boy might have taught yeh a few things”
“Wardley?” At his mention, everything in the world seemed to stop. “What do you know about Wardley? Is he alive?”
“Ah, now yeh want to talk.”
“Dinah frowned. Morte would definitely not come if she whistled.”
“but what else could she do? She could no more stop breathing than turn away from knowing Wardley’s fate.”
“That was you. You told us to hide.”
“Aye. And if I hadn’t, yeh would be headless right now, since yeh were determined to fight an entire army.”
“to capture her—eh, you—dead or alive”
“The passion with which yeh had defended that silly wooden toy for yer brother had shown me that yeh could never do such a thing”
“a sword in yer hand, the cloak trailing behind yeh. I watched in awe”
“The execution of such a handsome young Card, one who was so well liked and potentially the next Knave of Hearts, would surely be frowned upon”
“Wardley, once the brightest star in Wonderland, would be mocked for the rest of his life, all because he had saved hers”
“as the beautiful twisting crown that Charles had made was lowered”
“I will never see the palace again.” Or Harris. Or the beautiful stained-glass heart”
“There are worse places to be laid to rest, she thought. At least I’m here under the stars”
“It was the hawk, the tracking hawk, its beautiful deep red feathers mottled”
let out a yell and hopped away. “Yeh bit me! Who bites someone?”
“This news broke Dinah’s heart, and afterward there wasn’t a day that she didn’t think of Harris’s kind face and soft hands.”
“now he was in pain. It was unforgivable”
“To her devastation, she learned that Emily had been beheaded for treason”
“Her life was like nightfire—a place that once burned with bright hope, now nothing more than a flickering blackness”
“the motion giving Morte’s new leather reins a shake, a gift from the Spade. Morte regarded them humorously”
“Her childishness convicted her and she felt her face flush with shame.”
“I lay beside my love. The next day, I buried Amabel and Ioney under their favorite berry bush”
“When at last my vengeance was complete, I left their bodies in the Twisted Wood, just like they had left my Amabel to die”
“Dinah stared at the Spade as fat drops of rain drenched them both. Lightning snaked across the gray sky. “Vengeance. This is why I help yeh.”
“someday we will both have justice for the loved ones taken from us.”
“The walls around them were alive, raising their voices in a hissed chorus. Evil, evil, evil”
“The light blazed through the dark. She burst through into its glorious pinkness and fell to her knees”
“There was nothing sweeter than being alive. Morte whinnied happily beside her, rolling on the soft carpet of flowers”
“The flowers radiated a warm heat when they popped open, which accounted for the heavenly air”
“The valley was deep and long, a maze of color and fantastic curling shapes”
she blindly ran, arrows falling around her like rain.
“Morte!” she screamed. “Morte!”
“You will not touch my steed this day, nor spill my blood. I do not fear death from your arrows, but you should fear my sword”
“waited to see Charles’s happy face, just on the other side of the rabbit hole”
“The ground was covered by a lush, bluish-green grass. Horses were everywhere, roaming free—eating, running, sleeping.”
Dinah saw Charles’s tiny body crumpled under a starry sky. Her voice rose. “I have nothing but hatred for the king.”
“made her dreams vivid and joyful. Charles, weaving feathers into a hat. Harris, adjusting his spectacles while they feasted on wine and grapes.”
seeing Charles on the stone slab. “Don’t be sorry. It would be fitting to die like my brother.”
“She danced around Bah-kan, and once managed to land a hard blow just above his ribs”
“She suspected his pressing appointment was with one of the Yurkei women who was fond of watching him bathe every day”
“Yes, she could be happy here, perhaps in time. There was no Wardley, so a truly perfect life was ruled out”
“she knew that she was being led, and yet the smell was everything she missed. Harris and Wardley and warm baths and the palace.”
“Cheshire’s wicked grin seemed to stretch to the end of the valley. “Cat got your tongue?”
“Tell me one reason why I shouldn’t kill you where you sit,” she hissed
“My mother. How dare he? Dinah was on him in a second, grabbing his neck”
he lowered his voice significantly, and Dinah felt chills rush up her spine. “Perhaps from the night I saved your life”
“The night when I told you to go now, and yet, like an idiot, you visited Charles’s chamber instead?”
“Cheshire was the stranger who had saved her life? She stopped struggling and stood stunned”
“I guess we’ll start at the very beginning, since most of the things I dabble in start with me anyway.”
“You’re smart, like me. I mean, gods know people have tried to poison me over the years. Adorable.”
“Together we conceived a child and named her Dinah. You, my beautiful and strong daughter.”
“seeing the love of your life dying in front of you and being able to exchange only formal, pleasant words of comfort, your heart feeling like it will burst inside your chest.”
“I dared not say anything, because who would watch over you if I was executed?”
“so unlike mad Charles, with his blond hair”
Cheshire smiled and looked down at the table. “I had already interceded where I dared to make sure that you had a good childhood.”
“I arranged for the Ghanes to move into the palace so that you might have a friend in Wardley”
“I convinced the king to hire gentle Harris as your guardian”
“so that you and your mother could have some peace.”
“After all, I knew my daughter to be intelligent and curious, just like me.”
Dinah’s throat was dry and stinging.
“She stared at Cheshire as he continued, but all she saw was Charles”
“could not hide my horror when he told me that he had just thrown Charles from a window”
“I knew that every moment of my life had boiled down to this one. How could I help save my daughter without revealing the truth?”
“I ran—how I ran—first to the kitchens and then to the weapons room. I knew you would never survive without food in the wild.”
“I watched you sleeping—my daughter, the pride of my heart, with a face like her mother’s and a fierce intelligence not unlike my own. I had never seen you so close.”
“I vowed I would do whatever it took to help you survive. Then you awoke . . . and tried to kill me.” He gave a chuckle.
“I believe she was glad to receive the crown. The king left immediately after to resume the hunt.”
“as soon as I knew that you were safely in Sir Gorrann’s care, I quietly took my leave from the king’s side and followed an alternate path”
“Please forgive me for my delay.” He gestured to the elaborate table. “One would not call me a light packer.”
“But, finally, here we are, father and daughter, reunited at last, without secrets or lies between us. I have longed for this moment.”
“Tea, my daughter?”
“Kneeling before her, he bowed his jet-black head in the moonlight”
“Why? Because you were born to wear the crown, and I will not see Davianna’s daughter slowly waste away.”
“a ring of hearts that blazed like fire. The crown she had left behind. Cheshire picked up the crown and lowered it onto her head.”
“His voice boomed through the trees. “Rise, Dinah, and become the Queen of Hearts. It is time to embrace your fate.”
“She ran her fingers lightly over them. Harris would have loved to see this.”
“things changed. Dinah, I’ve grown a bit fond of yeh, and I’ll fight beside yeh, whatever yeh decide.”
his face etched with the love of a father.
“Yeh remind me of my Ioney”
“when she was a child in her mother’s arms, when Charles was still alive”
“Be quiet! Do yeh long to be pecked to death?”
“We become who we must to overcome pain and to make things right again”
“I will have the crown that my brother made for me. I will take it with fury and swords.”
“they rose into the air in an ever-widening spiral, blocking out the stars”
“A crowd of Yurkei was gathering, and their voices gave way to silent awe as she walked down the steep path”
“Cheshire, his purple robes billowing in the wind and his hands resting together”
“Dinah’s newfound father came with his own set of demands: he would take his seat as the queen’s main adviser”
“while Cheshire was constantly trying to engage her, she couldn’t bring herself to be kind to him, not yet”
“Since he had arrived, Cheshire had given her a number of gifts—a lovely diamond brooch in the shape of a cat”
“without her noticing, the blade and her body had become one”
“Then again, they had to live in the Darklands, which to Dinah seemed to be punishment enough”
“the women of the Yurkei presented Dinah with a gift: a suit for battle, adorned with elements representing both Hu-Yuhar and Wonderland”
“The collar was lined with soft white gossamer feathers plucked from young birds”
“Cheshire put his hand over his heart and gasped. Sir Gorrann, steps behind him, raised his eyebrows.”
“giving her healing tinctures and murmuring quiet prayers for her success”
“I want him back. He is no good to you dead. We need him.”
“Dinah felt the crown heavy upon her head. “I swear it on my brother’s life, on Charles’s name.”
Dinah was already climbing down the ladder. “Then we will all be dead anyway. Good night.”
“Morte had been so happy to see her that he only stomped around her three times”
“They ran through the valley for hours, the thundering of his hooves scaring the other wild ponies into submission”
Their faces were alarmingly happy.
“What are you staring at? Where are the warriors? Have they already killed each other?”
“the rider was smaller, with a mane of curly brown hair blowing in the . . .
Dinah didn’t feel her body start to move, but soon she was sprinting”
“WARDLEY! WARDLEY!”
He abandoned his horse, sprinting toward her as she screamed his name.
“WARDLEY!”
They collided in the middle of the field in a tangle of limbs and a crushing embrace.
Wardley was kissing her forehead, his arms wrapped tightly around her.
“I thought I would never see you again!” sobbed Dinah.
“I’m here now. I’m here. Shhh.”
“don’t you know? I’m here to command your army.”
“He’s here, she thought. He came for me. I wasn’t wrong to believe he’d find me.”
“Wardley had known Dinah her entire life, in the intimate way”
“recounted her story, alarmed at how dangerous everything seemed in retrospect”
Dinah rolled her eyes. “I’ve seen you bathe a thousand times.”
“That is true.”
“after she had stabbed him (way too deep! he was kind enough to remind her)”
looked surprised to see Wardley soaking wet and Dinah watching silently.
“It’s not what it looks like.”
“Dinah let her hand rest on his thick curls, her face cracking into a smile”
“Her hands slid down his hair, tracing his jawline, pulling his face upward”
“You are surely not the same girl that I kissed under the Julla Tree. You’ve grown strong!”
“He reached out and tugged playfully on her braid, and Dinah’s fierce heart melted”
“He demonstrated by breaking off half of the kitchens, folding it flat, and then putting it back”
“Sir Gorrann stepped in front of her, his sword drawn and trembling as he pointed it at his old commander”
“He’s an incredible monster, isn’t he?” They both glanced over at Morte as he happily stomped a toad to death.”
so enchanting, a world of soft pink bubbles and warm light. She shrugged. “It feels like love.”
“And that’s why it’ll kill yeh,”
“They came to me how they came to me. You did not come here to ask questions about the pillows.”
“Keep your temper, Queen of Hearts.”
Morte was beside her now, and she weakly pulled herself up”
Dinah heard Wardley’s voice ringing above the commotion. “What the hell happened? Give her to me! Bring Cheshire now!”
“Wardley leaned his face over hers. “You can close your eyes, Dinah. I’m here.”
happy to fall asleep in the arms of the one she loved most.”
“What happened?”
Cheshire resumed lightly patting her head
“She looked up at Cheshire with amazement. “How does one make warm pies in the wilderness?”
“he explained its full effects. My dagger at his throat helped a bit, I think. ”
“where I could love you both proudly. And yet, by doing that, I would deny you the crown”
“taking care with each corner. When he was done, a tiny paper mouse remained”
“You’re up!” His long arms wrapped around her shoulders, and Dinah gladly let him pull her against his body.”
“pushing her hair aside to whisper in her ear. Dinah’s heart beat rapidly as his breath brushed her cheek.”
“Do you believe we can win? As the onetime future Knave of Hearts, do you think we will win?”
a lock of curly brown hair fell over his eyes. Dinah felt her heartbeat quicken. “Take a walk with me, Dinah. There’s something I want to show you.”
“waterfall flowed up from the middle, its stream turning into mist”
“I prayed that I could take you here one day, that you would wake up.”
A smile crept over his face, so lovely that it hurt her heart. “Wonderland is a pretty wondrous place”
“Yes, but . . . what if he doesn’t? What if he puts on a helmet, and I don’t recognize him?”
“the way his sculpted muscles tensed under his shirt. He had become a man since she had seen him last.”
“I will kill you before I let the king torture you. And I hope you will do the same for me.”
“The last time that I get to speak with you as a friend, and not as a commander to his queen.”
“he grabbed the back of her head roughly and pressed his lips hard against hers. Dinah gasped at the force with which he kissed her. It was a hungry kiss.”
“feeling the muscles rippled across his shoulders as he pressed down against her. A whimper escaped his lips”
“As he kissed her furiously, Dinah felt a wet tear drip down his face onto her cheek.”
“what is wrong? What are you doing?” Her eyes traveled over the face she knew so well.
“Dinah felt the creepings of a familiar dark emotion as she looked up at the man she loved so much: rejection.”
“I want to be your king, your husband, your lover. But I cannot . . .”
prickly laughs tearing her into pieces. “It was the only thing that ever mattered, Wardley.”
“I COMMAND IT!” she screamed at the top of her lungs. “OBEY ME!”
“how just moments ago, his lips had been on hers. She bit down on them so hard that she tasted blood.”
“She clutched Morte’s mane, driving him harder, faster, until the two of them moved over the earth in a blur of blackness”
“If she could not quench the fire burning within her, she would set Wonderland ablaze”
“His ancient fingers, once used to turn the pages of glorious books of history and language now struggled to fold a tiny piece of paper”
“consoling himself with his own voice. “Remember, my dear, it’s not the size of the paper, but the size of your skill”
“Harris, how long is forever?” she had asked.
Harris had smiled. “Sometimes, just one second.”
“The crane stared back at him, bobbing slightly.”
“The queen was coming. He knew it. That was not the question.
The question was who would she be when she got here.”

Sunshine & Showers, Fortresses & Flowers, Churches & Bell Towers - Salzburg, Austria
DAY 1 - JUNE 22
Our first day in Salzburg was sunny and hot! We started early, making our way toward Fortress Hohensalzburg from our Airbnb. On our way there, we stopped for a few minutes to check out St. Peter’s Abbey and Cemetery.
St. Peter’s.
Just a small portion of the cemetery that surrounds the chapel.
The water wheel that provides the power for the bakery at the abbey.
On the Residenzplatz on our way up to the fortress.
Sphaera - on Kapitelplatz.
We reached the fortress entry via a VERY steep set of stairs and ramps - whew! Glad we did this climb before it got too hot!
Visiting the interactive armory building in the fortress - we learned all about cannons, gunpowder, etc.
This was an impressive suit of armor!
This suit had a Monty-Python vibe to it!
I cannot imagine how cumbersome and hot this suit of armor must have been.
St. George’s Chapel inside the fortress.
Views of Salzburg from the Fortress Hohensalzburg.
Always wonder why the cannons are aimed at the towns from these fortresses?
As close as I got to anything to do with The Sound of Music during our visit to Salzburg, Doug is not a big fan. This was in the Puppet Museum at the fortress.
We finished our visit and walked back down the hill to the city center for a lunch. After a leisurely lunch, which is one of our favorite things about Europe, we roamed over to Kollegienkirche. Quite beautiful and very different from the churches we have visited up to this point:
We headed back to our Airbnb to do a bit of laundry and to cool off. We actually had dinner at our Airbnb, we needed a little down time!
DAY 2 - JUNE 23
Our plan for the day was to visit Mirabellgarten in the morning, however, the weather didn’t cooperate. We made the 30 minute walk over to the gardens, but it started raining and didn’t stop. So we walked back and just waited for the weather to clear a bit. After lunch, we took a walk up to Kapinzer Hill, having decided to save Mirabellgarten for a sunnier day. Another steep set of stairs to get to the park. From there it was a steady climb up to the observation deck. Still a great view of Salzburg and a nice chance to get away from the crowded plazas!
In order to get to the city center from our Airbnb, we had to take a tunnel through the rock cliff behind the murals in this picture.
This is the courtyard at the Toy Museum, I took the picture to try to figure out what that concrete chute is on the cliffside. I never did figure out what it was or what its function was.
Kapinzer Hill in the behind the white buildings as we walked along the Salzach River, before crossing the bridge and starting our climb up the hill.
The view from Kapinzer Hill, about one-quarter of the way to the top.
The view from one-third of the way up.
We completed the steep climb up the stairs from the river, now we were enjoying a steady climb to the top through a wonderful canopy of trees.
This building was closed, but we still had a nice view from the observation wall.
Our view of the Alps in the distance, happy to at least be able to see them on this hazy and cloudy day.
Awesome view of the fortress from Kapinzer Hill.
We stopped at the monastery chapel on our way down.
Doug always wants a picture of the organs in the churches we go into - so, here you go!
We ended our day with a dinner stop at a local beer garden - no pictures, guess I was too busy drinking beer!
DAY 3 - JUNE 24
Our last day in Salzburg, it was cloudy and dry - so we headed toward Mirabellgarten. Our first stop was at the farmer’s market on the plaza for a bite to eat. I had an apfel brezen (apple pretzel) and Doug had some kind of deli sandwich.
Yummy assortment of goodies at this deli on the plaza!
The gardens were beautiful, but a bit crowded - it was Saturday and people were out enjoying the cooler temperatures.
Looking out at the gardens, the fortress in the distance.
The fountain located at the entrance to the gardens.
There is a small garden just off from the fountain, it is full of these whimsical statues (sorry, I just couldn’t pick which one I liked the best):
After visiting the statues, we wandered down to the other end of the garden. As we approached this end, we could hear a woman’s voice coming from one of the buildings next to the garden. She was one of the performers from the Sound of Music production - which was performed in a theater close by. It was a treat to listen to her as we wandered through this portion of the garden.
We wrapped up our visit to the garden, stopped in a cafe along the way for a little lunch. Then we went and sat on Mozartplatz and just enjoyed a little people-watching. On to Vienna tomorrow!
