Alright, here’s my thoughts on Magnus Protocol’s first season as someone who hasn’t listened to Archives.

[No Archives Spoilers. Spoilers for Magnus Protocol Season 1 Finale.]

Initially I was unsatisfied with the ending. At first I was engaged with everything, but I felt a lot of questions I wanted to know weren’t answered. Like “What is the Archivist and their deal?” or “What is FR3-D1 up to? Why is Colin so afraid?” So that felt a little bit of a downer.

But after thinking about it, it was a really big and amazing finale that leaves me wanting more.

I got to admit The Custodian was the biggest surprise but also not really. Magnus Protocol has kept this formula of having a statement in the episode, and a lot of my IRL friends were doubtful there would be one but I knew there would be one.

What really surprised me about The Custodian was how he was turning to stone after he finished his statement. Every non-main character statement The Archivist took ended in death, but the death was a result of resisting the Archivist (25) or they were already dead (15/18). So to see what happens to someone in perfect health from start to finish of the Statement.

Celia was a big star in this finale, and it feels like this was the “secrets revealed” moment for her. Unclear if she has more secrets, but it feels like her biggest ones are out there now. Explains her reaction to the Doppelgänger case (17), why The Hilltop Centre has been so prominent in a variety of cases, and why she’s been teleporting to Oxford.

The only question I really have about Celia is how much does she actually remember? Throughout the season we’ve clearly seen her reference things from what I’m assuming is Archives, but in the finale she says “The Fearless One” tore her who from her what and “left her story to fall like autumn leaves.”

Is her name actually Celia in Archives? Who is “The Fearless One”? Feels like her memory is blurry, but she remembers vague details of people instead of story events in Archives (my Doylist answer is this is a way to make the story accessible to viewers who haven’t listened to Archives) and that’s why she remembers Jon and Martin?

Overall, really great work from Celia this season.

Sam wouldn’t think so though.

Sam is an interesting case. He’s been dying to know what happened with The Magnus Institute and when we finally found out (28) it made a whole lot of sense why he’s so adamant about the institute.

Initially when Sam exploded at Celia for her secrets I was like “Sam! Buddy! Now’s NOT the time.” But actually, that was the right time.

He’s been really patient with Celia not feeling ready to explain her backstory, and consistently reassuring her she doesn’t need to reveal anything until she’s ready and actively reassuring yet making her aware it’s important to share at some point. Here he is, in front of what is potentially the biggest supernatural secret he’s ever seen, and Celia has turned out to know this was here the entire time!

And Celia (in his perspective) determined to sacrifice Sam to the Rift was a really big twist I didn’t see coming. The idea that Celia has disrupted the rift between the two worlds is incredibly devastating and she wants to stay in the Protocolverse for Jack makes it heartbreaking that she has her own selfless/selfish motivation for sacrificing Sam.

Then Alice-

Oh, Alice.

I think this finale was the hardest on her. She had Teddy trying to bring something up (29) and she rushed to Sam. She had Colin terrified asking for help while she was trying to get the last train to Sam and Celia. She’s been the most connective person in their whole group trying to look out for everyone, and then everyone desperately asking for help at essentially the same time is heartbreaking.

It’s incredibly fascinating that out of the three groups (Sam/Celia, Colin, Teddy) she chose Sam every time there was a chance. It does make sense. She’s fully aware Sam and Celia are going to be encountering something supernatural, and she needs to make sure she’s there to either stop or help them. Teddy and Colin might vaguely have something affecting them, but the urgency for Sam clouds her vision so Teddy and Colin were turned away. Who knows if they’ll even be alive when they get back?

And speaking of when they get back!

Gwen, my love, you have girlbossed far too close to the sun.

There’s no way she’s surviving this. She’s assumed this whole time that Lena was trying to keep responsibility from her because maybe Lena didn’t believe in her or because of her nepotism, and Trevor Herbert was the one calling all the shots. But she found out too little too late that Lena was the one in charge and she’s been the one focused on keeping the Externals at bay. Trevor Herbert has no fucking clue what happens at the OIAR as long as it gets the job done.

I do wonder why Gwen got those files. I’m assuming it’s Jon/FR3-D1 after Sam got that email (7) but why did FR3-D1 decide to give it to her? What’s the purpose of getting Lena out? Is it for the Externals to be loose? What’s FR3-D1’s goal here? Is it somehow tied to being set free?

After this finale, I have so many questions, and while I am still kinda unsatisfied with how it ended I do have to admit this season was such good fucking food. The workplace dramadey combined with horror statements and the slow merging of the two storylines was so seamless I almost didn’t notice until the end. I’m really excited for season 2.

Finding Butcher standing in front of a mirror, dark eyes glaring at his own reflection, shoulders tensed, hands gripping either side of the sink with sweat visibly sliding down his neck, was nothing new. It has become an everyday thing with the Brute, and since it has becoming a regular occurrence you were able to spot the problem from a mile away. Like now for instance, you were making your way through the building, eyes scanning through the manilla folder in your hands when you heard a sound coming from the beaten up bathroom. Following the sound, your feet come to a stop by the entrance when you see the Brute hunched in front of the sink, shoulders tensed and shaking, hands gripping the sink and knowing right away he was having another episode. A panic attack.

After taking Compound V as a last resort, it has not been easy on the Brute. Constant anxiety and panic attacks, uncontrollable rage, strength, would occur on a daily. Weeks. It has been going on for weeks and only seemed to get worse, or at least that’s how the man felt. Of course he never told you this, would hate to admit the truth to you, about how he can barely breathe sometimes, the fear that is constantly hanging on his shoulders, not fear of what he can do, but of what he can do to you. He didn’t want to hurt you, would definitely avoid you if he can, but you were always there, with him, through it all, guiding him.

He didn’t understand why he kept having these episodes, why it seemed harder to control when he didn’t find it difficult when he took the temporary V, was it because it was natural? Stronger? Permanent? These were questions he didn’t have answers for. Yet, he wouldn’t be in this fucking mess, hyperventilating in front of a goddamn mirror, that he just punched the shit out of, if he’d just listen to M.M. If he’d just stop being a fucking cunt. For once. He wouldn’t be feeling this burning feeling in his veins, the rapid heartbeat in his chest, the urge to just let go, he should’ve stopped. He should’ve Fucking stopped.

“Butcher..Control it,” You tell him with a firm tone, causing a shuddering exhale to leave the man’s mouth,

His orange beams continue to look at you through the shattered mirror, until he shuts his eyes tightly and lets his head hang low as he tries to breathe in and out. But each time he tried inhaling through his nose, just like you had taught him, he’d feel it getting caught in his throat, making the heaviness in chest stronger, making everything around him close in. Fuck. He definitely does not miss this, last time he had a panic attack this severe was when he came back home from the military, he was a total mess, but just like you, he had Becca at the time.

The sound of the sink cracking against his hands can be heard as his grip only tightens, he really couldn’t fucking breathe, it was getting harder by the minute, his eyelids were burning from the urge to just let go, and the anger that was becoming stronger was not helping.

“Butcher,” You try again as you take a step closer to him, but that only made his attack worse,

“Leave,” He harshly spits out, still trying to intake deep breaths, even if it sounds as if he gasping for air,

“Fight it,” You ignore him as you continue to push him, to try and get him to take control, he’s done it before, multiple times, he just needs to find his way to the wheel again,

“Fucking leave, (Y/n),” Please! He mentally begs you as he shakes his head,not wanting you to be next to him at the moment, fearing he was finally going to lose control and actually hurt you,

But you didn’t. You were still there, firmly demanding him to breathe, to grab ahold of the wheel, and that he was not alone. You made sure he knew he was not alone. You, out of anyone else knew what he was going through, you once were new with your abilities as well. Learning how to use and control them for the first time was definitely difficult, it was a challenge to keep them hidden, especially at school, not being able to use them against your bully to show them your not one to fuck with was definitely hard. Especially when you too struggled with anger, it only made it harder to control, but eventually, you learned to control it.

Standing right next to him you can see the way the sink begins to crack against his grip, hair damped with sweat, shoulders tensed and shaking as he tries to gather his breathing. It hurt you, just like any other day, to see him this way. It hurt to see him so vulnerable, insecure, scared, instead of his ruthless, brutal self. But, it just showed just how human he still was.

“I’m not going anywhere,” You tell him, finally meeting those bright, orange beam eyes of his, they glowed brightly at you as if to intimidate you, but all you saw was fear, all you saw was Butcher,

“Please. Get out,” Butcher finally begs you, glowing eyes pleading at you, hands tightening their grip on the sink when he only feels the heaviness getting stronger in his chest,

He exhales with a shake of his head, eyes shutting tightly to get them to stop, but the moment he lets his head dangle he feels warm, slim fingers finding their way underneath his jaw, forcing his head back up. Causing his eyes to open, which were still glowing brightly.

“Look at me,” Is all you tell him before inhaling deeply through your nose and slowly letting it back out through your mouth,

He continues to stare at you, glowing eyes averting from your mouth to your eyes, “We’ve done this before.. we can do it again,”

At your words, your other free hand settles softly onto his. Fingers slowly easing his grip on the sink then holding his hand the moment he finally lets go. The whole time you slowly tried prying his grip away, you kept eye contact with him as you continued doing breathing exercises with him. Before he even knew it, his whole body was now turned towards you, both hands holding your own as he leaned against the near shattered sink. In a matter of minutes, his orange beams slowly began fading away, being replaced by those familiar beautiful hazel orbs of his that remained holding eye contact with you.

You slowly nod your head at him, “That’s it. Breathe,”

And he does just that. Breathing with you, holding your hand, hazel eyes staring directly at you, not once looking away. Even after his breathing and heart rate had settled down, he still remained leaning against the sink, hands holding on to your own. You knew he would soon lock himself out, it was only matter of time before he pushed you away from embarrassment just like he usually would after composing himself, but before he can even avert your eyes, you let your hand settle on his bearded cheek, forcing his eyes to lock onto yours. Gently brushing away a tear stain with your thumb from his skin, you tell him the words that you think he should know.

“You’re only human, Butcher,” Your (E/c) eyes hold contact with his hazel ones as you continue, “Having panic attacks and fear doesn’t make you weak… it just means you’re still human,”

You give him a small sincere, warm, comforting smile as you gently tap his cheek with your thumb. However, as you dropped your hand from his cheek and began walking away to give him the space he wants, a firm hand is grasping onto your wrist, stopping you from taking a another step. The sudden action has you looking up at him, watching the way his hazel orbs are staring at you with an unreadable look.

Butcher continues to stare at you in silence, firm fingers still curled around your wrist, then with a small voice he says, “Why the fuck do yer stay?”

Wasn’t exactly what he wanted to say, but it was definitely what he kept asking himself. Why did you stay? Why would you waste your breath on him? He’s hurt you and the rest of the boys countless times, and yet, you’re still here. With him. He’s done nothing but bring you pain, he didn’t deserve your help. He didn’t deserve you.

“Because I know what you’re going through… and you shouldn’t be going through it alone,” You tell him, gazes not once parting from each other,

Something in his eyes switch, turning firmer as he lowers his head, voice slightly gruff with his next words, “I’m not worth it,”

A small smile tugs on your lips, the same smile you always give him when you know something he doesn’t, and that honestly frustrates him the fuck out. But it was your next words that make his blood freeze.

“You are to me,” He remains staring at you with a dumbfounded look, his grip on your wrist slightly loosening, but before he can even think of anything to say back you beat him to it, “I’ll go make you a tea,”

At your words you easily slip your wrist from his hold and walk out the room without another word, without hesitation. He didn’t know it but you too were close to having a panic attack yourself, you had just revealed your feelings for him without meaning to. It just came out smoothly and now you had to get away from him before he can say anything, before he can reject you.

He watched your frame disappear, mind replaying your words, heart sinking and floating back up to his chest as he weights your words. Then, before he even knows it he’s pushing himself off the sink and storming his way towards the little lunch area in the building where you had your back facing him as you leaned your hands against the counter.

As you were waiting for the kettle, mentally cursing at yourself for even saying what you did a couple minutes ago, you didn’t hear the way Butcher stomped his way to you until you’re being turned around by strong hands. The sudden movement makes a small noise to leave from your throat, but was quickly muffled when a pair of lips land on yours, turning it into a choked moan. Your eyes grew wide for a moment as your mind tried comprehending what is happening, but when it finally registered realize it was Butcher’s lips who were nervously molding with yours, you immediately reacted back. Fingers finding their way to his long locks at the base of his neck as you deepen the kiss. A breath of relief fans against your skin, feeling the way Butcher only holds you tighter against his chest, hands firmly holding you from your back as he too deepens the kiss.

You two remained that way, savoring and holding each other for what seemed like an hour, but in reality it was only 10 minutes.

However, the sound of voices coming from the entrance, halts both your movements, then before you know it Butcher lifts you off the ground, causing your legs to automatically wrap around his torso as he leads you both away from the miniature kitchen. How did he manage to sneak past the gang without getting noticed? You had no idea and could careless about it, only thing you did cared about was the man in your arms, and nothing else.

i haven’t made a proper toh text post in a while but i was going off about this on discord and twitter so now i am bringing it here:

What the hell happened with Luz’s cape?

Just like. everything involving it. It was heavily underused in the series (Luz herself only wore it in four episodes, three of them being in Season 2A) despite its importance as a representation of Luz’s connection to Eda (and in my opinion, the demon realm as a whole), and was later passed down to King, only for it to inexplicably disappear anyways.

So under the cut, I’m gonna provide a detailed history of the cape and every instance in which it was used, to try and make any sense of what happened to it.

Starting with Agony of a Witch, Eda is first seen preparing witch’s wool to knit a cloak out of. According to her, it “repels powerful spells”, so it apparently has actual function aside from looking cool as shit. Luz wants the cloak, but Eda insists that she herself needs it to ward off the increased attacks from the Emperor’s Coven. However, later thinking of Luz’s kindness and devotion to her wellness, Eda decides to make the cloak for Luz instead, as a gift.

Next is Young Blood Old Souls, where Eda is currently captured. Finding the finished cape (I’m gonna call it a cape from now on), Luz is inspired by Eda’s gift and their bond to go on a rescue mission to get Eda back. This is the first episode where Luz herself wears the cape, but it’s also this episode where there’s a noticable flaw; the cape just looks cool.

We skip to Lilith and King getting captured and the “fight” between Luz and Belos, and he opens by teleporting behind Luz and flinging her against the wall with magic of his own. The cape seemingly does nothing to hinder this.

Here, you could probably chalk it up to Belos’ red magic being artificial (since he’s a human and all), which is why it was able to pierce through the cape that was made to counter magic. Fine. So Luz rescues Eda, King, and Lilith and that wraps up Season 1.

Fast forward to Echoes of the Past, the third episode of Season 2 and the first one of the season in which Luz wears the cape. She goes to King’s old island along with Lilith and Hooty to find out about King’s past and stuff. The biggest threat of danger they face there is Jean-Luc, who attacks not with magic, but with polymorphism by shifting into various shapes to attack. No magic involved means no chance for the cape to do its thing.

Fast forward again to our next episode, Hunting Palismans (or Palismen, whatever). In this one, Luz goes out at night in her cape and pajamas with Flapjack and later gets scooped up by Hunter along with the rest of the palismen. Once again, the wonkass red magic that Hunter also uses pierces through Luz's cape. The later fight with Kikimora (who uses actual magic) doesn't count, as Luz had put her cape away.

Fast forward yet again to our next episode: Yesterday's Lie, the last episode of Season 2A and the very last episode that features Luz wearing the cape. In this one, Luz is in no inherent danger, as she spends almost the entire episode in the Realm of Inbetween while Vee and Camila must contend with Jacob’s nonsense. Sometime during Luz’s final conversation with Camila before being pulled back, though, the cape itself gets stained and torn with several holes in it.

And such is the last time we see Luz wear the Witch’s Wool cape. It had a good run of four episodes spaced out from eachother, but you may be wondering, “What happened after this?” That is where things get… ehhhhhh.

The next appearance of the cape is about halfway through Season 2B, in Hollow Mind. Near the beginning of the episode, Luz, Eda, and King go out to the Night Market to buy some Witch’s Wool to repair the cape. Unfortunately, Prim the shopkeeper closed up to join the Oracle Coven. Oopsie poopsie.

That’s all we see from the cape this episode. Which brings us to the very last episode that the cape appears in, in the strangest situation possible: Clouds on the Horizon.

In their last moments all together for a long time, it is shown that Eda fixed up the cape herself by shortening the cape to remove the torn bits. It’s also here where the cape goes to its final owner: King. Everything looks spelled out clearly; the cape is now too short for Luz to wear ( D: ), so it goes to King. Simple right? Surely it will come up later as a plot point. King will at least be shown wearing it throughout the episode, right?

Wrong.

Not even a minute after King is given the cape, it completely, inexplicably disappears during the commercial break. When we cut to Luz, King, and Katya descending into the forest, the cape is literally nowhere to be seen. Actual video proof.

And this is the last time we ever see the cape. No seriously, it never shows up again. Not with King during his stay with the Collector. Not with Eda as she hides out with Lilith in the Archive House up in the sky. Not even four years later, when Luz is seen packing up her closest belongings as she prepares to attend the University of Wild Magic, does it even make a cameo.

I think this might be the owl house equivalent of Araki Forgot Syndrome. How the hell does one introduce a physical attribute of Luz's character that represent not only her ties to the Demon Realm, but her bond with Eda, the witch who guided her through this new world, only to severely underuse it, show nothing of its function, write it off as broken, and then have it disappear from existence. We had a good thing. We had a badass cape, it had meaning, we had everything we needed and it all ran like clockwork.

And it was hyped up, too. The original poster for Season 2 of the show had Luz front and center wearing the cape, and it was even included in the brand new animation provided for the same season's opening sequence.

Alas, the show has been over for a long time now, so there's not a lot that can happen now. We can only hope that in some post-canon spinoff/continuation or another Reddit AMA the whereabouts of this marvelous piece of fabric are addressed, because I will continue to rag about this at any given chance. Be thankful that I don't use the rest of this post to rag about what happened to any part of Luz's original outfit to begin with.

hey! a bit of a late ask but i would love to know your thoughts on the tennant/tate doctor who specials and am especially wondering if you have any hcs abt bea and ben watching them together?? i just know they would be losing their goddamn minds over the reunion (as was i)

Hi!!! No worries at all! I’m happy to talk about this of course! The first thing you need to know is that I haven’t watched the specials yet. I’ve been doing my first ever complete watch-through of New Who, started last year and I’m now three episodes into the back half of Series 7. I could technically skip to the 60th anniversary specials now, and I probably should, but I kind of want to watch everything in order and also I’m dragging my feet on the idea of having to pay for Disney Plus, so 🤷‍♀️ With the amount of spoilers I’ve seen on tumblr already, I really should just find a way to watch them ASAP. (The site I would’ve tried first is defunct now and I’m scared of viruses and getting in trouble, so I haven’t taken the time to find a new one.)

As far as Ben and Bea, yes they did lose their entire minds about this, of course! We know Ten and Donna are Ben’s favorite Doctor and companion so you KNOW he was so so SO excited for this. Bea also loves the show and of course was also very excited for the episodes. (I do love the whole thing where Bea has definitely been a Doctor Who fan exactly as long as Ben has, but refused to directly acknowledge it in NMTD because she knows it’s Ben’s favorite and she was determined to hate him. And also because Moffat. But both of those things are in the past and Bea is free to enjoy the show again lol) And she also enjoys the whole experience of the specials because of how absolutely adorable Ben is when he’s excited about anything, really. I can’t really say what they would think of the specials after watching, because I haven’t seen them and because I’m sure their Doctor Who opinions in general are way different than mine, bc they’ve been watching for much more of their lives than I have and are probably all caught up.

What I can say and will never get tired of saying, is that physical touch is a big part of how they show love (that and words of affirmation), so they absolutely still cuddle when they watch shows together. At this point I doubt they even notice they’re doing it, it’s just instinct to be curled up together and touching as much as possible. I can’t help but contrast it to Lolilo, that now they can have all the physical affection they need, and when they say “the flat” they mean the one they share together.

Although- they do need their arms sometimes to flail around and react to plot twists, so they aren’t cuddling the entire time. Just most of it 😆

I’m definitely going to post my reactions when I do watch the specials, now that I know you’re interested! I have a post in my drafts that’s a list of my opinions on the Ponds era now that I’ve finished that, so I’ll post that too. I want to do a full meta post about Ben and Doctor Who now that I’ve finished all of Ten’s seasons, also. And I know I wrote a headcanon post about Bea and Ben watching the Thirteenth Doctor’s first episode together, I’ll try to find and reblog that for you since it’s the closest thing I have right now.

I actually pretty much have never finished any show i’ve dedicated my blog and life to because things ending is associated with some kind of trauma i haven’t figure out yet :)! Didn’t finish glee, teen wolf, supernatural, hannibal, etc. But i’m working through it and trying to finish everything :)

Al’s Plans for 2023

A few months ago I made a super ambitious plan involving my finishing 3 long-form stories and getting them published by the end of the year. I soon realised that putting that sort of pressure on myself was not a good thing, and would soon suck the joy out of writing for me.

Therefore, my three main New Year’s Resolutions are as follows:

I resolve to enjoy writing, to remember that it is a hobby and not a job, that it is good good to step away sometimes, and that I only have to live up to my own expectations and no one else’s.

I resolve to keep my head high and stay true to my principles, regardless of what others may do, to curate and create experiences and environments that are healthy and happy, and to make the world a slightly better and warmer place to exist in whatever tiny ways I as an individual can do so.

I resolve to do my best, to be kind to others, and to myself.

I will be on semi-hiatus in May-June as I’m planning on going travelling. Until then, I’ll be trying to take the pressure off my work. I’m binning the schedules and slackening the tight leash I have kept myself on over the past couple of years. Still, I know I have things that I would love to work on, if I can, and these are as follows:

The Beginning of a Symphony - Arc 3 is coming in January, and I’m hoping to write the fourth and final Arc over the next 6 months or so. Symphony will wrap this year.

This Shadowed Land - I would love to write this in 2023. If I can, I will. The only issue is that it is a long and demanding story, both emotionally and technically, so I will need to be in the right headspace to write it. Basically, I need a break and some lighter and fluffier stories first!

Currently Untitled Short Story Collection - At the moment, Artemis and I are working on a story about her time working for Ludo Bagman. In the last few days, I’ve written 1.5 chapters, and how many more there will be, I’m not sure. Usually I like to make a plan before I let Artemis tell me to go f**k myself and do her own thing, but this time I’m just letting her have free reign. Whether or not I’ll live to regret this decision remains to be seen.

The Lights That Never Go Out - I’ll work on a chapter here and there. It’s an episodic story and non-linear in plot, so I can pick and choose chapters as I see fit. I expect that either this or TSL will be out by the end of the year, but not both of them!

The Hinny Wedding WIP - It’s been meticulously redrafted and beta-read, and is basically finished and ready to go (other than not having a title) but I’m sitting on it like an angry and protective dragon. It contains a lot of references to plot points from stories that I haven’t published yet. Other stories need to go first or it’ll be spoilers galore, so I’ll continue to horde it until I’m ready.

Assorted Shorts - Taking away my schedule means I can write odd bits and bobs when I want. Saff has a one-shot for January, Zadie has one for the summer, and as always, Artemis has several. At some point during the year you’ll be getting to see her discovering the third form her Boggart takes, learning about the miracle of Hanukkah, and becoming a Godmother. She also has yet another plot twist up her sleeve that she decided to spring on me a few months ago and will be revealed in due course…

Harry Potter: 12 Months of Magic - some of the above shorts are intended to be included as part of this year-long event for the HP fandom, which I’m really really excited for!

Other than that, though… Who knows?

Jina’s dramas awards 2022

It’s here! I had less time this year to devote to dramas because of a variety of reasons, but I still want to share the love. (Check out my favs from 2020 and from 2021.)

As usual, these are mostly Chinese dramas and they’re typically historical or period costume or VR-historical dramas but I do have a category for modern dramas specifically. Also, this is based on dramas that I finished. So, if I started but didn’t get through it yet, it won’t show up on this list.

A new addition this year: best short drama! With cdrama entertainment really putting more money and time into making their mini dramas, I think they deserve their own category.

best overall drama:

love between fairy and devil: no surprises here. it’s a devil x fairy drama aka brooding man x bright girl dynamic and it’s so so good. it really took all of us by a storm and we enjoyed it so much. the cgi is pretty good, the soundtrack is fantastic, and just everything hits my fangirl’s heart so well.

most delightful/fun drama:

night of love with you (modern short drama): i was seeking more short dramas to watch and am so glad i came across this. it’s funny, it’s well paced for a short drama, the couple’s chemistry is amazing, and their visuals look great too. also, the tinge of tragedy? love it. obsessed. 

most impactful drama:

rainless love in a godless land (Taiwanese modern drama, technically aired in 2021 but finished in 2022 so it counts!!): i love this kind of modern fantasy stories and i especially loved that this drama incorporated indigenous beliefs and myths and had all these larger questions. i probably watched this all in like three days (the eps were so long!) and was captivated. 

most unexpected drama (aka the dark horse):

sassy beauty: i don’t think i had any specific expectations for this drama, I was just looking for VR-historical drama and came across this. It also happened to have Yan Zidong as the ML, who I adore, so I gave it a chance and I’m so glad I did! Especially letting myself get past the first 4 episodes because the female lead’s growth was so so gooood. and again, the tragedy of it all?? yeah yeah, it’s everything.

drama with the best soundtrack:

love between fairy and devil: do I need to say more? it’s got all the bangers.

best costume/design/set drama:

love in flames of war (republican era): disregarding the story/plot, i really liked how this drama looked. maybe they looked a little too pristine for a republican era? but the male lead’s a warlord and rich and stuff so i didn’t question it too much.

best short drama:

a familiar stranger: cdrama ent is finally putting money and time into short series! this year we really saw an improvement in this genre and several other dramas did really well, but this drama had my heart because of ryan cheng. he’s my boy. but really, this drama had solid acting, story, with strong cinematography and soundtrack. just chef’s kiss.

favorite modern drama:

be my princess: granted, I didn’t watch many this year, but this is the only one I finished and actually spent VIP money to watch the last few episodes. I really adored this drama and the questions it asked and I was pleasantly surprised by this couple pairing. 

favorite drama from any year not aired in 2022:

dreaming back to the qing dynasty (2019): I haven’t watched a drama based in qing dynasty (with some time-traveling) in years! I fell in love with so many of the princes but especially wang anyu as 13th prince. it’s the first drama i’ve seen of him and i’ll be keeping an eye out for his future historical/period dramas!

drama with a soft spot in my heart:

lost track of time: i’m obsessed with this drama greatly thanks to jing chao but yeah also obsessed with irony and revenge and the fight against fate and doomed endings. yeah, this drama had me buying VIP. the production and cinematography was just okay but the acting? the tragedy of it all? i’m kissing jing chao.

favorite scene from a drama:

a familiar stranger: this is a random category just so that I can say I absolutely love the fireflies scene. it’s so so good, so soft, so tender. he saved her and then she saved him in the most beautiful way.

SO this is a day late; whoops, I meant to post this on New Years' Eve

I did this last year and wanted to do it again! So here’s a list that no one asked for of the top 10 anime series I watched this year, including two honorable mentions. They are ranked from (in my opinion) best to worst!

Animes I Watched This Year: 

Arcane: League of Legends

IDK if this counts as an anime, but I love it so much that I’m including it anyway. 

Literally my favorite animated show of all time. 

It beats out Moriarty the Patriot, Demon Slayer, all of the animes. 

People who have been following me since my Arcane obsession began know of my love for Viktor.

He’s my favorite and deserves the world. 

But the show is stunning; every shot is amazing, the music is astounding, and everything about it is breathtaking!

Jujutsu Kaisen 0

Ok, I saw this in theaters, and I wanted to cry because it’s so beautiful. 

I already owned the manga and had read it, and the fact that I love the movie more than the manga is something to consider.

There was never a boring moment in the movie, all the characters were memorable (with the exception of very few), and I absolutely adore Yuta.

Like, I already loved Geto because of that flashback arc we had in the manga, but Yuta beat him, he beat Gojo, and he beat everyone in the entire anime as my favorite except for maybe Inumaki.

This was truly Yuta’s movie, and I can’t wait for season 2!

Demon Slayer Season 2

THIS SHOW BLEW MY EXPECTATIONS OUT OF THE WATER

The CGI used was absolutely amazing. THIS IS HOW CGI SHOULD BE USED PEOPLE TAKE NOTES

Uzui is actually my favorite Hashira, save for Iguro (my least favorite is Rengoku, don’t come for me) so seeing a season dedicated to him was great.

I own all the manga, and this was one of my favorite arcs, so seeing it animated was like a birthday present. 

Bungou Stray Dogs: WAN!

THIS SHOW IS SO CUTE, BUT ALSO MADE ME CRY WTF

Like episode 10? Had me pretty much bawling my eyes out

I also watched it in dub which was also a treat. I really like the BSD dub, and this was no exception.

Someone, please talk about it with me.

I need someone to cry with.

Spy x Family

Normally slice-of-life shows aren’t my thing. 

But this one is the exception! 

This show is so fun, so colorful, and so just utterly amazing that I can’t help but want to rewatch it a bunch!

I don’t have any complaints about it. It’s just at number 5 cause I love the other shows more. 

Chainsaw Man

So I’m collecting the manga right now. 

I already read it online and remember pretty much none of it. 

This is what I get for reading it during finals week lmao

But the show is so cool!

It helps refresh my memory of what happens and every moment (save for the first kiss) is animated so beautifully!

They use CGI really well, with very few moments looking awkward or just out of pace. 

This is only down at the halfway mark because it hasn’t gotten to my favorite part of the manga yet, so I can’t accurately judge how much I’ll love my favorite parts.

The Case Study of Vanitas Season 2

THIS IS SUCH A PRETTY SHOW

The only reason it’s down this far is because I didn’t actually finish season 2. 

I didn’t even see the final fight between everyone and the Beast of Gevaudan, or however you spell it

So I really can’t judge this show until I finish the entire thing, haha

Blue Exorcist

I’M ONLY ON EPISODE THREE AND HAVEN’T SEEN IT SINCE 2014 DON’T COME FOR ME

I’m watching it in English Dub, and I think this is the only role that I actually like Bryce Papenbrook in. Anything else, and he just comes across as slightly annoying, but I really like him as Rin!

But this show is such a nostalgia trip. It’s great to rewatch, and the animation holds up really well!

Also, the opening is one of my favorites. I absolutely adore it. 

Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress

This one is so bizarre, but I still really enjoy it. 

Like the premise is so cool, and the animation is great!

It just fell kind of flat. 

They just needed more episodes to really explore everything they wanted to, but overall, 7/10 would recommend it to someone looking for a short but fun watch!

High Rise Invasion

I’m not even done with episode 1, but I already really enjoy the guy with the sniper rifle. I think he’s called Sniper Mask?

Anyway, the whole bit at the beginning of that one cop or whatever trying to make the main girl take off her clothes wasn’t the best. 

It is part of what brought it down to number ten.

The other part is just that I haven’t finished it. 

I’m noticing a trend with my watching habits, lol

Honorable Mentions

Sk8 the Infinity

Literally, the only thing beating this out of my top ten list is Adam. 

I actually had this idea of writing a story of a detective from America coming to Japan and arresting him because that was hilarious to me, and he didn’t deserve the ending he got. 

He deserved much worse, and no one can change my mind. 

Millionaire Detective: Balance Unlimited

Oh. My. Gosh. This show was SO BORING

The first couple of episodes were really fun and jazzy and whatever, but by the end, I was doing literally everything I could just not to watch it.

right now i’m reading the clique: best friends for never. for some reason i really had the urge to reread the series so i’ve been doing it and hopefully i finish it. there’s like 13 books or something like that but they’re relatively short and they’re literally for middle schoolers so it’s not that hard to read (not hard at all actually). i’m still finding them as entertaining as i did when i was younger (definitely less but still entertaining) but i keep thinking about how much this series probably affected my insecurities. i can’t believe middle schoolers were reading this (me included) 😭😭. also massie is literally a lesbian and in love with clare

2022 Year in Review Tag!

in terms of new movies:

american psycho — i actually enjoyed this movie a lot but it’s genuinely bc this movie is much funnier than i thought it would be. all deeper meanings and commentary aside patrick bateman is a fucking specimen

kwaidan — obsessed with this movie ngl. the first three segments are top tier (kurokami, yukionna & HOICHI THE EARLESS ESPECIALLY IF YOU WATCH NO OTHER PART PLEASE WATCH THIS ONE I CANNOT PRAISE IT ENOUGH). however the last one was super lackluster in comparison to the other three. tbh i feel like if the last one was the first one it would be a really good progression from okay to the best bc you really can’t follow hoichi the earless with anything imo.

tales from crypt (1972) — watched a lot of old horror this year (bc my partner is a horror movie buff and has been getting me into them for awhile now lolol) but this movie was a lot of fun! i want more ridiculous anthologies and movies tbh. make movies fun again tm.

jeepers creepers — never seen it before and MY GOD was screaming the whole time i was watching bc no?? we do not need to investigate you KNOW it’s a creature. all of this might’ve been avoided if y’all just minded your damn business 😔

then off the top of my head i rewatched my comfort movie sherlock holmes bc fuck iron man, rdj’s sherlock is his best role to me. i definitely wanna watch more movies next year.

had a pretty good birthday for the first time in years

despite the struggles working from home has done a lot for my mental health and i want to try and secure another wfh job in the future.

(he’d already seen it twice.) so that’s fun :D - i hated both of the White Boys. i don’t even remember either of their names but i despised them. they were basically the exact same person!! i could not keep them straight, they look similar and they act nearly the exact same. i am so annoyed that they both ended up playing relatively important roles at the end - dude!!!!!! eugene!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i love that guy he’s great. my favorite character - edin was kinda fun. i don’t think that’s her name but i can’t remember it. whoops. anyways she was also annoying but i think that was kind of the point, and her brand of annoying was way more endearing than the White Boys. she grew on me - i’m probably gonna make a separate post about this actually but wednesday is aro/ace and you can’t convince me otherwise. i rarely (never) headcanon characters to be a certain sexuality, but i feel so strongly about this!!  - now i’m gonna speculate what the popular ships for this show will be (or are). endi/wednesday is probably the most popular if i had to guess, then White Boy 1/wednesday and White Boy 2/wednesday will probably be pretty close in popularity. next up i think we’ll have wednesday/bianca. which. i haven’t written a thought about bianca yet i need to do that. after that maybe it’ll be enid/whatever his name was who she was actually dating in the show.  - okay i just checked ao3 and i was pretty close. i got the first three right and the fifth one! but apparently WB1/WB2 is the fourth most popular ship. which i didn’t even consider because why would i. they interact like a total of 3 times in the show and they both suck. why would anyone want to write more about either of them let alone both of them?? and it’s a little sad that bianca wasn’t up there in the 10 most popular (which is including friendships but i didn’t guess those) because she deserves it.  - bianca time!! she’s awesome i love her. i wish she wouldn’t do the blue eyed stare all the time but i can excuse it because she’s a fish.  - i was so sad when thing almost died. i couldn’t believe it i was in shock that they would DARE kill thing. fortunately for me i stayed strong and didn’t believe it and fortunately for them they didn’t kill him - love all of the unsubtle metaphors in this show. my favorite was probably lycanthropy as a metaphor for being queer. that one was incredibly in your face and it was fantastic - honestly a lot of the drama between wednesday and her parents seemed so forced??? like. maybe i just haven’t consumed enough addams family media (the only things i’ve seen are the two movies from the 90s and i know there’s more) but it felt like that was kind of out of nowhere? i get she’s a teenager now but idk i just never thought the addams family would have that kind of drama - fester annoyed me. we barely saw him but he just wasn’t right. (and again, maybe this is just because i haven’t seen enough other portrayals of him) - all the old women in this show had so much makeup on it was ridiculous. they’re old! let them have wrinkles please i beg you - speaking of makeup morticia’s eyeshadow wasn’t big enough and fester’s eyebags were too small and too light

i’m realizing a lot of these thoughts are negative and i promise that’s not how i feel. i loved the show i really did. it’s just i noticed i wasn’t happy with a lot of the details but i was very happy with the overall product. does that make sense? anyways, i’m excited for a potential season two at some point. i didn’t think they’d be able to get everything wrapped up in the last episode but they did! it’s a satisfactory ending (for me at least) and i would be totally fine if it didn’t get continued, but i wouldn’t object to another season either
