The much-talked about production did not disappoint; the modernized visuals create many new layers to the show, and make you think about events and characters in a whole new way. Nehal, Allison, Justin, and Christia were probably my favorites, but the entire cast is so talented, it’s difficult to choose any as standouts. A very nice capture overall. There are a couple quick dropouts in act one, but no major blackouts. There is one head that can be seen occasionally, but it only blocks a small portion of the stage and only affects the action for about 20-30 seconds of the entire show. It’s filmed in 16:9, with a mix of wides, mediums, and close-ups. The sound is excellent as usual. Includes curtain call and playbill scans. Wonderful performances from the entire cast but especially then soon-to-be-Elphaba Kerry Ellis. My Decade in Books Tag

@lexi-rose-studyblr tagged me for this--thanks!!

The rules: respond to the prompt “my decade in books” however you want, & then tag some ppl! I chose some of my favorites from that year along with a brief description of what I was doing (which is different than what the person who tagged me did). You can do that or make up your own response

I had to do something I never do to make this post: use Tumblr on my computer. I forgot what it looks like in a browser instead of mobile--it’s weird

Lucky for me, I joined Goodreads in 2009, although I didn’t use it regularly until 2015. So I had some help to remember, but let’s just say I left a lot of blanks for myself

2010: This was the end of my sophomore and start of junior year in high school, and because of the coursework at the time, I still had the ability to read in every spare moment. I read a lot of the Bloody Jack series by L.A. Meyer, a lot of e.e. cummings, and Journey to the Center of the Earth by Jules Verne

2011: Junior-senior year of high school, and I was so concerned with first AP tests and then college applications, I know goodreads snuck off my radar a lot. I finally read Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson, which was one of my grandpa’s favorite books (he died in 2003), and many other classics as I prepped for my AP Lit test. I actually enjoyed many of the ones I read, but I no longer remember which ones I read from the 2010-2012 period, so I thought I’d mention a couple of them here: The Great Gatsby, Cry the Beloved Country, Go Tell it On the Mountain, Sons and Lovers, and Pride and Prejudice

2012: Senior year of high school and starting my freshman year of college. I really had no idea how much my life was about to change--I regularly stay in touch with only a tiny handful of my friends from high school now, which is weird. I do remember, though, in prep for my AP Lit test, my teacher gave us a list of prompts from previous years, and I made it my mission to find a way to use Harry Potter for all of them. I ended up writing the actual test essay on the Scottish Play--which I dearly love--but it was fun anyway. I again have a mostly empty goodreads, but I really liked The Macho Paradox by Jackson Katz and The Books of Bayern by Shannon Hale

2013: Ending my freshman year and starting my sophomore year of college, I started dating my now-husband, and I used goodreads much less than before. Of the few books I included on goodreads, I enjoyed Deadly Persuasion by Jean Kilbourne and The Cry of the Icemark by Stuart Hill, which was a reread (and still one of my favorite books ever).

2014: This year were some of my hardest physics classes in undergrad, so I almost never used goodreads, which means my memory of what I read is limited. I did enjoy A Confusion of Princes by Garth Nix, but that’s the only rating I left 

2015: Junior-senior year of undergrad, when I realized I didn’t want to go to astro grad school, but wanted to be involved in science education somehow. Some of my favorite books were: The Shadow and Bone trilogy by Leigh Bardugo (and so began my love for Queen Leigh), the Alex and Ada comic book trilogy, Nimona by Noelle Stevenson, the Chaos Walking trilogy by Patrick Ness, Rebel Belle by Rachel Hawkins, Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein, When Christ and His Saints Slept by Sharon Kay Penman, Ash by Malinda Lo, Seraphina by Rachel Hartman, 1421 by Gavin Menzies, and House of Ivy and Sorrow by Natalie Whipple

2016: I graduated with my undergrad degrees, and while I waited to be able to apply for the next round of grad school openings, I worked part-time at a library--so, so many good books were found that way. We adopted our sweet fur babies that year. Books I loved included: The Imposter Queen by Sarah Fine, A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket, Heartless by Marissa Meyer, When the Moon Was Ours by Anne-Marie McLemore, The Supernatural Enhancements by Edgar Cantero, The Paper Magician trilogy by Charlie N. Holmberg, Everything Leads To You by Nina LaCour, The Princess Saves Herself In This One by Amanda Lovelace, Isabella: The Warrior Queen by Kirstin Downey, and a variety of girl-lead superhero comic books for my women’s and gender studies senior thesis

2017: I started grad school that fall, but spend the first half of the year still working at the library, so I read a whole lot. It was also the year my now-husband proposed. Highlights include: Every Heart a Doorway by Seanan McGuire, The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie by Alan Bradley, Wild Beauty by Anne-Marie McLemore, Wicked Like a Wildfire by Lana Popovic, A Caribbean Mystery by Agatha Christie, To Be Or Not To Be by Ryan North, Good Omens by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman, Radium Girls by Kate Moore, Young and Damned and Fair by Gareth Russell, The Bone Witch by Rin Chupeco, Queens of Geek by Jen Wilde, and The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden

2018: I finished my first year and started my second year of grad school, getting married smack dab in the middle of my summer term. The time for reading drastically went down, but I managed to read way more than expected. Some favorites include: The Prince and the Dressmaker by Jen Wang, The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon, Peril at End House by Agatha Christie, The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle by Stuart Turton, Sea Witch by Sarah Henning, the Lockwood and Co. series by Jonathan Stroud, Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik, The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid, Daughters of the Winter Queen by Nancy Goldstone, and Howl’s Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones

2019: This was a Hell Year for me, with my migraines reaching new heights, and I spent a lot of time listening to audiobooks because it was the only thing I could do. Some books I loved last year were: Beyond the Hundred Kingdoms by Rod Espinosa (The Courageous Princess #1), Sera and the Royal Stars #1-5, Red White and Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston, Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo, Over the Top by Jonathan van Ness, At Bertram’s Hotel by Agatha Christie, Her Royal Spyness by Rhys Bowen, Code Girls by Liza Mundy, In Other Lands by Sarah Rees Brennan, and god, so many more, so I’ll leave it there because I could go on for a long time (2019 was a good year for books for me because I stuck by my policy of putting down books I wasn’t enjoying, even if it was just because I wasn’t feeling them at that moment)

Chapter One

From the Eyes of the Son

“-and you have no idea how I feel about this, Mom. you know where my father’s at!”

“Yes, I do.” She was still calm, as she always was when I was this angry. It infuriated me. “Gareth, this isn’t the right way to handle anything. If you wish to see your father this badly, I’ll see what I can do, but you’re having a temper tantrum now. I’m not taking you anywhere when you’re like this.”

I couldn’t remember what had sparked this argument. It was something that came up with fair frequency now, especially when Rae, my foster father, did something to anger or hurt me. I knew he loved me and didn’t do these things on purpose. But neither he nor my mother ever made any attempt to hide the fact that he wasn’t my father, and it was beginning to become unbearable. “I don’t understand why,” I growled, trying to force myself to calm down, “you haven’t taken me to see him yet. I am fifteen years old, Mother. I have a right to know my own family!”

She sighed, leaning her elbow on her throne’s arm and putting a hand to her face. “Maybe you’re right,” she murmured. I was kneeling before her, as I had come to her as a petitioner, not a son. I wanted to meet my father and I would pull all of the heartstrings I needed to get there. Alex, my best friend, called me manipulative when I told him I was going to do this. So had Anna, his girlfriend and the only other friend I had in the world. That hurt, but I was determined. I had just passed my fifteenth birthday, and this had gone on long enough.

Mom stood then. “Come walk with me, Gareth.”

She waited patiently until I had risen and begun to follow her. This was new. We argued about this at least once a month recently, and she had never told me to walk with her. Could she have really decided I was right? Had I won? She led me out of the throne room and down the grand staircase leading to the first floor of the palace of Sylpheed, our home. From there she turned right and through a number of hallways and doors, and I figured out where we were going: the Queen’s Gardens. The air was crisp and smelled of lilacs and daylilies when we emerged from the glass doors leading into the courtyard. She led me to the center of the garden, to a stone bench before a fountain beneath a giant willow tree. Tiny fish fluttered and darted beneath the water's surface, and I watched them before sitting beside her, my hands clenched tight in fists.

I waited like that, tense, for several moments, before she spoke. “How are you doing in your studies?”

The change of subject made me scowl. “I’m going fine in my studies. You should know! The master gives you a report every week. Every week! Alex and Anna have reports every three months.”

“Alex is a commoner and Anna’s in the Upper Academy because her father is the headmaster there. You are neither a commoner nor enrolled in the Upper Academy. If you don’t understand why the bar is set so much higher for you-”

“Hey, that’s not fair! I never said-”

“-then I’m not sure you’re mature enough to understand what happened with your father.”

I scowled again. I never said I didn’t understand it, Mom. I’m the Prince. I know why the bar is so much higher for me. I just want to be a commoner sometimes. I want to be normal. I want to be able to go places with Alex and Anna, and make more friends, and I want to know what happened to my father. Alex has both of his parents and Anna knows what happened to her mother. What’s the difference between them and me? Just that I’m the Prince?”

She stared at me, rather than answering. She didn’t think I was finished speaking, even though I was. “I just want to be normal,” I repeated, looking down at my hands.

She put a hand on my shoulder. “You will never be normal,” she murmured. “That’s not something I can do for you, sweetheart. If you think that finding your father will do that for you, I don’t know what else to tell you. It won’t.”

“Why? He’s a commoner or something, isn’t he?” That was one theory I’d had over the years. The other was that he was a priest or monk and wasn’t supposed to be getting married or making kids.

“No.” She giggled, pulling her hand back. “He is… he is the Prince of Draeger, honey. Prince Drake Draeger. He doesn’t know about you.”

Answers. Finally. The fact that he was a Prince himself didn’t phase me. “Why doesn’t he know about me?”

“It’s a long story.” I didn’t answer. She wasn’t getting away with not telling me about this. Finally she took a deep breath and said, “We were engaged to be married, long ago, before you were born. But he hadn’t known he was a prince until just a few years before we were to be married. He knew nothing about being a prince. You know how old Dragons can live to be, don’t you?”

“The oldest confirmed Dragon was almost ten thousand years old when he died,” I murmured. “How old is he?”

“A little over four hundred.” Then a thought occurred to her. “Haven’t you learned Draegic history?”

I shook my head. “No, not really. Only in passing, as it relates to our history. The Dragons lost a war and were scattered, weren’t they?”

“That’s right. Up until the last Fated Cycle, your father didn’t know he was the Prince of Draeger. He lived as a common thief, stealing what he needed to survive. He had four centuries of that in his blood, and it would take more than a few years to train it out of him.” She took another deep breath. This was painful for her, and I felt bad, but I had waited too long for answers. I wouldn’t stop her. “More than a few years to train him not to live on his instincts, with his heart. We argued over when we were to be married. He wanted to do it immediately. He didn’t understand that there were political considerations that needed to be made. I was a little more harsh than I should have been, and hurt him. He left.”

“Is that why I’ve never met him?” I was mystified at this. Surely he would have understood that he needed to come back for a child!

“No, I’m not finished yet.” This was really distressing her. I fought with myself. I had wanted to know what happened all of my life, and now she was telling me, but if this was that painful for her… “There was a short but violent civil war in Draeger while he was there. We lost contact for about three months because of it. By the time he came back, your foster father and I had become very close. Close enough that Drake assumed the worst of us, and we argued again. This time he didn’t leave, though, he fled to that balcony.” She pointed above us, and I looked. That was near where our bedrooms were. “I followed him, tried to continue the conversation with him, but he was leaning heavily against the bannister. It collapsed beneath his weight, and he fell.”

I turned my gaze back up to the balcony. “That’s about thirty-five feet,” I murmured. “Did he die?”

“No. He survived, but barely. The fall broke his neck and back. We took him back to Draeger- their medical technology far surpassed ours by that point, mostly thanks to our friend Marissa- and they were able to save his life, but barely.” Another deep breath. “That’s when we were told about you, Gareth.”

I shivered. I still h adn’t taken my eyes off that balcony. I had been told by one of the architects that someone had fallen from it years ago, and that was why it was checked so much more often than all the other ones. I didn’t know it had been my father who fell. “Alright,” I murmured, my gaze flicking back over to her. “So why keep me from him after that?”

“He still believed I had been unfaithful, dear. He wouldn’t have listened to me. I was told to go home and wait for those wounds to heal, both from the fight and the fall. They were sure Drake would send for me- for us- once he was as whole as he was going to be. That never happened. Your father-” She faltered, then corrected herself- “Rae and I discussed it at length after a few years, and decided it would be best not to push the issue. Especially since his response to my coronation was to send absurdly stiff and cold condolences about my parents’ deaths.”

“I… I see.”

I looked away now, back at my hands. They were still clenched in fists, although my fingers were looser than they had been. She put a hand over mine. “Do you understand now, Gareth?”

“I get why you’re never let me meet him.” I nodded. “I don’t get why you won’t let me now. It’s been fifteen years. Surely he’s over it by now.”

She smiled wryly. “He’s married with a child of his own. I should hope-”

“I have a sibling?” The calm understanding went right out of me, and I jumped to my feet. “I have a little brother or sister and you never told me?!” I shouted at her.

She stared at me calmly. The only sign of tension in her was how she narrowed her eyes ever so slightly. “Keep a hold on your temper,” she told me in gentle sternness. “As I said, given the circumstances, I should hope he’s over it by now. I can arrange for you to meet him now, especially since you want it so much. But it’s going to take time, dear. You have to be patient. This can’t be rushed.”

“Why can’t we just tell him I exist?” I asked blankly.

“We could do it that way, if we wanted to cause tensions. Let me send a message to Draeger, telling them I’d like to present my son to him. Perhaps ask him to allow you to remain there a few weeks to study a different country’s government. Give me time to do this the right way. Things will be so much more pleasant for you if you do.”

I wasn’t happy with having to wait longer. She knew where my father was, she knew he was alive, she’d known all this time, and had never told me. But it sounded like she really was going to try to make contact with him. I just had to be patient.

After a few more minutes of talking, she dismissed me, and I immediately headed for the castle gates. Mom hated it when I left the castle without an escort, but I wanted to be normal. Normal kids could go and hang out with their friends when they wanted to.

I found Anna and Alex where I usually found them: in the Dragon’s Tear Pub in the upper city. They had their school books spread out on a table in the corner, out of the way of the rest of the restaurant. They looked up as I strode in, my body tense with agitation and excitement. “You’re wound up tight,” Alex observed, setting down his pen and picking up the mug at his hand. “What’s up?”

I sat down as Alex took a drink. “I might be able to meet my father,” I said excitedly. “Do you know how long I’ve waited for this?”

“You’ve talked about nothing but for the last year,” Anna said, smiling brightly. “When’s the big day?”

“I don’t know yet. She says she needs to think about it, how to do it without causing tension. And I get it, you know? But I don’t think there is a way to do this without causing tension. I have a sibling on his side. Can you imagine?”

Anna and Alex looked at each other, eyes wide. “And Her Majesty never told you?” Anna breathed. “I don’t know if I’d be able to forgive that.”

“I can understand it. I’m the Prince here, and my sibling’s the Prince or Princess there. It’s not like we’d be able to grow up together. Still, just knowing that I had family would’ve been nice.”

They were quiet, eyes downcast. “So I’m probably going to be going to Draeger for a while,” I said, trying to shake off the solemn mood that had overtaken us. “I’ll be bringing back souvenirs, so is there anything in particular either of you want?”

“Who knows?” Anna said with a shrug. “I’ve never been to Draeger and I’m sure Alex hasn’t, either. Just get us whatever you think we’ll like. I”m sure you know us well enough to figure it out.”

“Draconic rum for me!” Alex said brightly.

Anna gently smacked him with the back of her hand, glaring, and I laughed. An uncomfortable pulling sensation in my head put a stop to that real quick, and I winced and put a hand to my forehead. “Gareth?” Anna asked in a concerned tone.

“I’m alright,” I murmured, not sure if I was. I felt so weird and now I wasn’t sure it was all excitement and tension. My hand was shaking and my head felt hot against my palm. “I-I think I’m getting sick,” I murmured. “I don’t feel right.”

“It’s just excitement,” Alex said, although there was concern in his voice and hazel eyes.

Anna reached over and pressed her wrist to my forehead. She shook her head as she pulled away. “No, I think he’s getting sick,” she murmured. “We better take you home, Gareth. Alex, can you take care of the bill?”

Alex nodded hastily and rose, jogging for the bar to pay for their drinks. Anna gathered up their books, stuffing them into their packs, then helped me to my feet. “I’m fine,” I protested, shaking her hands off. The motion made me dizzy, and made me doubt that statement.

“You’re allowed to admit when you don’t feel good,” Alex said, returning. The three of us wandered out into the brisk twilight, and Alex shielded his eyes with his hand, looking west towards the sinking sun. “It’s getting late, anyway. I’m surprised you were allowed to leave.”

The three of us turned to the castle and started walking. “I do what I want,” I said, trying to hide my illness with haughtiness. “I wanted to see you guys, so I came out to see you.”

“You should’ve stayed in,” Anna said tersely.

“I’m not that bad.”

“No, but you’re getting there in a damned hurry. You’re white as a sheet.”

“My head hurts,” I whispered. Whatever this was, it was coming on fast. “What the hell is this?”

I was leaning on her now, feeling weak and hot. “Alex, go run ahead for help,” Anna said, drawing us to a halt.

“I can walk,” I protested weakly.

As Alex ran ahead of us, Anna shifted her weight to ease me to the ground. “No, you can’t. I was practically carrying you, Gareth. I-”

Her words cut off in a sharp gasp. “What? What is it?”

She reached over to the side of my head and brushed my hair behind my ear. “Your ears are bleeding,” she murmured.

Half an hour later, I was in my rooms, in my own bed. Healers came and went, trying to get my fever under control. They just had no idea why my ears were bleeding.

As my fever continued to climb, Mom and Rae began trying to heal me themselves. It terrified me. “No, stop,” I choked. “Something’s wrong.”

“What is it?” Mom wrung her hands.

“Your essences- they’re black, like tar. It’s choking me.” I coughed, a punctuation mark on my distress. My head hurt so much I could barely see, could barely keep from retching.

Bewildered, Mom looked up at the doctor, who shook his head. The doctor sat next to me, holding a hand up. I felt him gathering his essence, forming a ball in his hand, a dark, tarry ball. “What do you see?” he asked me gently.

“It’s a ball of magic. It’s all black and sluggish.”

“Is it tarry, like your parents’?”

“Yes. What’s happening to me?”

“Just rest now, Your Highness.”

He stood, and gestured for my parents to follow him. They did so, closing the door behind them. Anna and Alex moved closer, and Anna entwined her hands in mine. “You’re going to be okay,” she murmured, stroking my hands.

“I don’t feel like it.” I closed my eyes, resting my head on my pillow and willing the pain away.

I felt Alex sweep my hair behind my ear, looking carefully. “What could make your ears bleed like this?” he murmured.

“I suggest you stop that,” Anna said mildly, still holding my hands. “You don’t want to get his blood on your hands.”

He withdrew his hands, brushing my forehead with his fingers. I didn’t open my eyes. “He’s so hot,” Alex murmured, “and it came on so fast…”

The door opened again, and I looked over to see Mom, Rae, and the doctor enter again. “We’re going to Draeger,” Mom said, and the commanding lilt in her voice hid fear. “They have a greater capacity to handle serious illnesses. We can’t even identify this thing, but maybe with Draegic technology, we can.”

My fingers tightened around Anna’s. “This wasn’t how I wanted to go there,” I ground out. “When are we leaving?”

“Right now. Can you walk?”

I opened my eyes with a groan and nodded, throwing my covers off. Rae came forward to help me up, gently setting me on my feet. I swayed, and his hands went to my sides, steadying me. I clung to him, his warm, soft, familiar fut comforting. He held me still for a moment before pulling away, a clawed hand on my back. He stayed near me as we went through the hallways, heading for the teleporter.

A feeling of dripping down from my nose made me put a hand to it, and my hand came away bloody. “Mom!” I called in a shaking voice. She rushed forward as I cupped my hands over my bloody nose, and I resisted her as she started to pull my hands away from my face. “No, don’t!” I cried, nearly hysterical. She pulled a little more insistently, but I yanked away, forcefully enough that I stumbled. Rae caught and held me, and I struggled in his arms, beginning to panic. If they pulled my hands away from my face, I would bleed to death!

He struggled with me, grunting out a cry for help, as I tried to get away. FIrst one guard, then another pulled me off my feet, holding me down as I struggled. “We have to get him to Draeger,” Rae gasped as I fought his grip. The guards helped haul me, kicking and screaming, to the teleporter.

I lost my senses in a haze of fury and fear. Everywhere I turned, someone was dragging me towards what I could only assume was my doom, as my arms were pinned to my sides. Blood, so much blood covered my face, unchecked. I was drowning in it- I was going to drown, and there were all these hands pushing me down, holding my head beneath the surface- I couldn’t escape them!

Abruptly, it all went away, and I was lying in a soft, narrow bed, blankets pulled up to my chest. The terrible burning had abated, as had the irrational panic. But, as I stared up at the unfamiliar ceiling, I realized I had no idea where I was.

I looked around the small, narrow room. A small metal table rested to the left by my head, adorned with a pretty crystal vase filled with a kind of flower I didn’t recognize. It took some effort, but I turned my aching head to the right. I was hooked up to some kind of machine by my right arm, and sitting next to me was a man with sandy light brown hair, looking frail in fine clothes. A plain, thin cane rested against his knees.

He was dozing, and seemed to wake up the moment I turned my eyes to him. “Hello,” he said in hushed tones. “I wasn’t expecting you to regain consciousness.”

“It- It’s that bad?”

“It’s that bad.” He reached over and pressed a thin wrist to my forehead, then shook his head and drew back again. “Your fever is still far too high,” he murmured, looking dreadfully worried.

“I am in so much pain,” I whimpered.

“Where?” He sat forward intently.

“All over. My head especially. What happened?”

“You’re very, very ill, Prince. I have you stabilized, but I don’t know for how long. You should probably rest. I can help you sleep if the pain is too great.”

“Wait- who are you?”

His blue eyes softened. “My name is Drake. I’m the doctor attending you right now. Your mother has sat up with you for two days now. I told her I’d stay with you so she could get some rest. She should return soon. Do you want to wait up to speak to her?”

“You’re- are you my father?”

“Direct, aren’t you?” he chuckled quietly. “I haven’t had time to discuss it with your mother yet, but I believe I am, yes.”

I reached out for him and he gently pushed my hands back down. “Relax,” he said soothingly. “There will be time to catch up. I’ll make sure of it. Right now I just need you to rest, unless you want to stay awake to talk with your mother.”

I was exhausted, and my whole body ached like nothing I had ever experienced before in my life. I wanted to sleep, but-”

A light touch of Kinsense brushed my consciousness, and Drake smiled. “You can rest, Gareth. I’m not going to go anywhere, and neither are you. I promise.”

I closed my shaking fingers over his, overwhelmed. Things were happening so fast, I didn’t know how to cope with it. Drake decided I wouldn’t need to, as his magic washed over me, gently pushing me towards unconsciousness. I didn’t fight it. I was in too much pain to feel anything but gratitude that soon I wouldn’t feel it anymore.

My life, after that, became a blur of pain and dream, drifting between wakefulness and unconsciousness. I heard my mother’s voice often, Drake’s at others. Sometimes I heard them talking together, and once they argued. Rae was there too, although he was mostly silent, sitting next to me with a furry hand over mind.

Time lost meaning. I could feel myself sinking away from them, deeper into sickness and pain, until it was ever-present. Soon not even Drake’s insistence in keeping me semi-conscious at most could keep the pain away. It grew in intensity until it was all I could see or hear or feel. Burning heat engulfed me until I wanted to cry out, but I didn’t have the strength to.

I sensed Drake near, through Kinsense. Beneath the surface of the agony, I could hear his voice, shouting orders in some kind of chaos around me. I scrambled at his psychic shields, desperate to communicate with him, to tell him that there was just too much pain. I could feel my life ebbing away from me, and I just wanted it to stop.

I felt him resist me, heard his voice falter. I threw the last of my strength into tearing down his shields, begging with Kinsense for him to just let this end. I couldn’t do this anymore. I got his attention; he stopped, staring at me with wide, frightened blue eyes.

And then I slipped into painless, clear-minded darkness. I almost felt as though I was dreaming as I turned around and back in the darkness, looking for light, for anything. I stopped short as my gaze fell on a pale, grotesque copy of myself. Stark white hair framed a marbled face, the green of my eyes washed out and sunken in. Its mouth opened in a big, bloody grin as it reached for me with pale fingers. A scream choked in my throat as the blue and white fingertips grew and twisted into black claws.

I stumbled backwards, trying to escape this monstrous copy of myself. I stumbled over my own feet and fell back with a scream, into waiting arms. I looked down at the arms that wrapped around me, ablaze with inner fire, hot beyond endurance. I screamed again as my captor’s heat burned through me, but he held on tight as my ghoulish double howled in rage.

The copy of me lurched towards us, but my captor pulled me away, safely away from the thing’s cracked and bleeding claws. I felt myself being pulled in two different directions, my consciousness sliding out of my body, and I looked on the scene in horror. I stood in the embrace of a copper-haired angel with flaming wings stretched behind him. He pulled me back everytime the deathly copy lunged for me.

Finally, the angel spread its fiery wings, lifting us both several inches. And then I was pulled back into my body as we dove, pulling away from the monster as it shrieked and howled in fury. We spiraled together down towards my body, lying still below us, and crashed down into it. The force drove my breath out of my body and I took a deep gasp, feeling as though I hadn’t breathed at all for minutes.

The angel’s fire swept over my body, the heat rapidly cooling as I caught my breath and opened my eyes. Drake knelt on the bloor, a dark-haired man kneeling next to him, his arms around him. My mother and Rae stood by my bedside, eyes wide and wet. Mom’s hands were pressed to her mouth. “Mom?” I whispered.

Another woman, with pale hair and eyes, leaned over me. “How do you feel, Prince?” she asked gently.

“I-” It hit me then. “I feel fine,” I said slowly, sitting up on my elbows. “Better than when I got sick, actually. What- what happened? Who are you?”

“My name is Serra,” she replied with a warm smile. “And I just brought you back to life.”

Hey, haven't been around in awhile. I've been "busy" over at @petesmediadiary logging (once a week, usually Sundays) all the media I consume (plugtime over). But in honor of #trypod, a campaign to make people aware of podcasts, here comes a list of all of the podcasts that I listen to with a brief description of what the podcast is about: 12 Hour Day with J.D. and Connor -- Each episode is at least 12 hours long where the hosts hang out for a day. You follow them as they hang out, and do things around New York City. (Comes out a couple of times a year) Comedy Bang Bang -- Scott Aukerman hosts where each episode he has on a comedian and other odd people come in after a brief interview segment Mike and Tom Eat Snacks -- Each episode Michael Ian Black and Tom Cavanagh Pick a snack, Eat a snack, and Rate a snack. (Currently on extended hiatus, but worth listening to the back catalogue) The Indoor Kids -- Kumail Nanjiani and his wife Emily V Gordon talk about video games and other stuff they are watching. (Also currently on hiatus, but might be coming back soon?) Womp It Up! -- Jessica St. Clair and Lennon Parham spun off their characters Marissa Wompler and Charlotte Listler from Comedy Bang Bang where Marissa has a senior project podcast from her schools library where they interview the schools faculty and other students. (Hopefully it will be back after Playing House season 3) Spontaneanation with Paul F Tompkins -- PFT has a chat with a celebrity guest and then he and some improvisors do a 30 minute long improv based on that conversation. Harmontown -- Dan Harmon has a mental breakdown on stage, and raps about having sex with your momma. The K Ohle with Kurt Braunohler -- No longer active, but it was a multi-format podcast that Kurt hosted. Pet-o-philia and Get Lost were the two best formats. Beautiful Stories from Anonymous People -- Chris Gethard takes a call from a random person and is not allowed to hang up for an hour. At the hour mark the call is ended. Surprisingly heartfelt and wonderful. My love of Gethard aside, this is a GREAT podcast. Hollywood Handbook -- Sean Clements and Hayes Davenport are two of Hollywood's elite and drop names on this red carpet we call showbiz. This is some of the hardest I have ever laughed. It does take some getting used to though. You will hate it for the first few episodes. Emotional Hangs -- Kurt Braunohler and Joe Derosa explore their friendship and break down adult friendships and try to be open and vulnerable with each other. Rose Buddies -- Griffin McElroy and his wife Rachel recap episodes of The Bachelor family of TV shows. (I have never watched an episode of The Bachelor Family of shows) You Made It Weird w/ Pete Holmes -- Pete talks about Comedy, Sex, and God with pretty much anyone (usually comedians) who will talk to him about it. (Harris Wittels #3 is one of the best episodes of a podcast I have ever heard. It's an episode where Harris is open and honest about his struggles with addiction, and he is so effortlessly funny about it too. Spoilers: While the episode ends hopeful and on a way that makes everything seem like Harris is going to turn it around, he died from an overdose less than a month after the episode was released) Who Charted? -- Howard Kremer and Kyla's Vilaysack count down the charts in Music and Movies every week. Pistol Shrimps Radio -- Matt Gourley and Mark McConville don't know anything about basketball, but that doesn't stop them from doing the play by play of a women's recreational basketball league in LA. The Worst Idea of All Time -- Guy Montgomery and Tim Batt watch and review the same movie once a week for an entire year. Year one: Grown Ups 2. Year 2: Sex and the City 2. Year 3: We Are Your Friends (currently still going) Doughboys -- Mike Mitchell and Nick Wiger review a different chain restaurant every week. My Favorite Murder -- every episode Georgia Hardstark and Karen Kilgariff each talk about a murder and go through the story of it. The Dollop -- Dave Anthony tells an American history story to his friend Gareth Reynolds who has no idea what the topic is going to be. The Adventure Zone -- The McElroy brothers and daddy play dungeons and dragons together. It's some of the best storytelling you will ever hear and it's consistently incredibly funny. Never Not Funny -- Jimmy Pardo hosts a relaxed chat with a celebrity guest. Doug Loves Movies -- Doug Benson plays movie games with comedians and funny people. Totally Beverages (and Sometimes Hot Sauce) -- Andy Rosen and Intern Josh do blind shootouts of beverages trying to figure out which is which and guess their favorites. (I "produced" episode 100, so selfishly I would suggest that episode) CoolGames Inc. -- Griffin McElroy and Nick Robinson create a new video game every week. With Special Guest Lauren Lapkus -- Every week Lauren is the guest on a different host's made up podcast. How Did This Get Made? -- Paul Scheer, Jason Mantzoukas, and June Diane Raphael talk about a different (usually) bad movie. No Such Thing As A Fish -- Writers of British panel show QI talk about their four favourite facts of the week that they learned while researching for QI. Ding-Donger with Matt Braunger -- Matt Braunger hitchhikes into your life for 30 to 45 minutes each week as he tells you what's been going on with him. Thanks for picking him up! The Bugle -- Andy Zaltzman and a rotating group of co-hosts talk about what's been going on in the world over the past week. (Formerly co-hosted by John Oliver) Competitive Erotic Fan Fiction -- Comedians write erotic fan fiction about pop culture and read it in front of a live audience. Hannibal Analysis: s01e04–Œuf

In the almost all of the previous posts, I’ve mentioned what I call the “Mirroring motif,” a staging option that is very prevalent throughout the show: two characters having a conversation, sitting across each other, creating a mostly symmetrical and balanced frame. In previous episodes, it was never used in the context that would make it iconic: during one of Will’s sessions with Hannibal. It’s been used with Hannibal and Franklyn, and even with our main duo, when they have breakfast in Apéritif. It’s was teased at the end of Amuse-Bouche, as, for the first time, Will actually sits in the chair, allowing him and Hannibal to speak face-to-face, without any obstacles between them. But the specific type of shot I always talk about doesn’t arrive until the very beginning of œuf.

This staging suggests openness and a certain trust in Will’s part: this is a man who uses glasses he doesn’t need just to avoid direct eye contact, who monologues his way through his class and doesn’t take questions from students to avoid as much social contact as possible, who spent his first sessions with Hannibal trying to put as much physical distance and barriers between them as he could. Sitting in front of Hannibal like this, he opens himself up to the closer scrutiny he usually dreads. He lets some of his walls down. The visual element is also highly symbolic of their relationship, or at least as Hannibal sees it: he thinks of Will as his equal, or as having the potential to become so. Even if he leans forward as Will tries to back up in his chair, suggesting the upper hand Hannibal has in this relationship, he still believes the two of them are mirror images of each other.

This first scene (which was originally at the end of Potage) goes a bit deeper into Will’s experiences visiting Garret Jacob Hobbs’ house, as well as his feeling of guilt due to Marissa Shore’s murder. But most important, it further develops the theme of Will’s continued empathic connection with Hobbs: “Sometimes, I felt like we were doing the same things at different times of day– like I was eating or showering or sleeping at the same time he was.” “Even after he was dead?” “Even after he was dead.” Then, we get our first hint of the gradual eroding of Will’s identity at the hands of his empathy disorder, his encephalitis and Hannibal’s manipulations. “Like… you were becoming him.” “I know who I am. I'm not Gareth Jacob Hobbs, Dr. Lecter.”

It seems as though Abigail has returned to the state she was at in the beginning of Potage: unusually stoic for someone who has gone through what happened to her, closed off, distant, and trying her best to seem fine. She refuses to speak to her support group and wants to leave the hospital she’s in. It worries Alana, who believes Abigail is not dealing with her trauma in a healthy way– Hannibal, on the other hand, sees it as as opportunity to manipulate her further and to strengthen his position as a father figure, which Alana advises against: “You stepping in as a surrogate would only be a crutch.”

The second session between Will and Hannibal in this episode also includes an interesting bit of cinematography: most simple conversation scenes in film and television are in over-the-shoulder shots, where the character speaking is in focus and the camera is a bit behind and to the side of the character listening, or at least in a similar angle– they will actually be used, as well as the mirroring motif, later in this scene. However, this time we begin with super intense close-ups, which cut quickly between the two characters, leaving us disoriented, unable to fully determine where the characters are and extremely uncomfortable with the fast-paced editing. This comes immediately after the commercial break, with no establishing shot or breathing room for us to prepare for the action. It serves to startle us and to make us feel for ourselves how intimidating this situation still is to Will: They look each other in the eye, Hannibal inquisitive and piercing, while Will is tense and attempts to redirect the conversation from his personal life to Hannibal’s. (This could also be a homage to The Silence of the Lambs, in which conversations between Clarice and other characters were consistently shot in this style of frontal close-ups, as a way to make the audience identify with Clarice and feel uncomfortable under the scrutiny and gaze of her colleagues and of Hannibal.)

Just as in Potage, the theme of the “Killer of the Week” plotline is the same as the theme explored in the main plot. This time around it’s family, or rather, surrogate families: children killing their birth families in favour of a new one, Will’s lack of connection to the traditional concept of family, the family he’s made out of his strays (in which Hannibal includes Abigail), the family both Will and Hannibal want to form with Abigail, the family she’s searching in them and in Dr. Bloom, and even the family formed by the team at the FBI. Describing the morgue scene and the sibling-like banter that precedes the examination, the script states: “Jack faces Zellar, Price, Katz, and Graham. He’s like a demanding father, presiding over his children as they present what they’ve just learned at school. Will stands slightly apart, not quite fitting into this surrogate family.”

Will, distressed at seeing the “Lost Boys” throw away what he could never have, buys Abigail a gift: fishing gear (his angry gift-buying is mentioned in Red Dragon). Although it’s more closely tied to the relationship between Will and Abigail, the fishing metaphor is much more appropriate to her involvement in her father’s murders than the hunting Jack Crawford loves to point at. It’s also interesting how the memory of hunting is what changes Will’s mind about the present: does he believe it might bring bad memories to Abigail or could he be attempting to avoid filling the father role that much, as Alana advised? In this session, unlike in the opening scene, Will doesn’t sit in his usual place in front of Hannibal (who is, in fact, still welcoming Will in his usual seat), but storms in, throwing the gift on the divan, and stands up for the rest of the scene, yet again putting distance between the two of them, and even has his back turned to Hannibal most of the time.

Going against everything Alana advised, Hannibal somehow manages to become Abigail’s guardian (or at least claims to become) and takes her to his home to do drugs. Before going, however, they talk about her bad dreams, Marissa and Nicholas Boyle, and Hannibal persists in trying to make her trust him, saying that while she’ll “have to get used to lying” to everyone else, she doesn’t need to lie about anything to him. As they leave, they deliver the most crucial lines to understanding Abigail’s position as both a victim and perpetrator of terrible things: “In the dream, I wonder how I’d live with myself knowing what I did.” “And when you’re awake?” “And when I’m awake, I know I can live with myself. I know I will just get used to what I did. Does that make me a sociopath?” “No. It makes you a survivor.”

Abigail mentions wanting to work for the FBI and Hannibal just too transparent: “I would certainly feel safer if you were in the hallowed halls of the F.B.I. protecting my interests.” Nevertheless, this little tidbit is one of the few moments where we learn about any desire of Abigail that isn’t just surviving through all of her trauma. We knew nothing about her as a person before the incident, and all that we know about her after is deeply tied to it. But the question stands, was she interested in that career before, or was it the FBI’s (and Will’s) actions in regards to her father that drew her to it? In the show, Abigail doesn’t really have any motivations that aren’t tied to her family, old or new, or the things she’s done, so it’s very interesting and intriguing to get what may be a glimpse of who she is removed from that context. (It’s also likely that this was introduced so that, had the show gone on differently, and Abigail actually joined the FBI, she could completely fill the role of Clarice’s surrogate.)

Hannibal does everything to make him, Will and Abigail into a family. He’s the first one to suggest the idea of paternity to Will, constantly reaffirms his paternal feeling towards Abigail, manipulates her into trusting and depending on him, and, at the end of this episode, becomes her guardian and takes her home. There, he tries to alienate her from Garret Jacob Hobbs (“You are not your father’s daughter. Not anymore.”) and tries to get Abigail to associate him and Will with her family: He gives her drugs and specifically makes the last meal she ever had with her parents, and (as explained in the script), attempts to have that dinner with her and Will. Will, however, never returns his calls and doesn’t come, so his role is accidentally filled by a furious Alana Bloom, but aside from that, Hannibal’s plan works perfectly: the hallucinogens, combined with the meal and his suggestions, make Abigail see her parents in Hannibal’s and Alana’s place, leaving Will out of this new family, out of the family at the FBI, and like the Lost Boys of this episode, alienated from his own family, alone at home with his strays, the only family he has.

Graham Foundation Announces 2021 Grants to Individuals

$585,000 awarded to individuals exploring innovative design ideas that expand contemporary understanding of architecture in the context of this transformative year

The Graham Foundation is pleased to announce the award of 71 new grants to individuals worldwide that support projects on architecture. Grantee projects represent diverse lines of inquiry engaging original ideas that advance our understanding of the designed environment. Selected from nearly 700 proposals, the funded projects include research, exhibitions, publications, films, digital initiatives, and other inventive formats that promote rigorous scholarship, stimulate experimentation, and foster critical discourse in architecture.

“This year, as the pandemic forced communities, cities, and countries to close down, the inequities of design and the built environment only intensified,” said Graham Foundation director Sarah Herda. “Through this dynamic grantee cohort, the Graham continues its 65-year commitment to supporting individuals to realize ideas that have the power to change the field of architecture.”

The individuals leading these projects are based in cities such as Ahmedabad, India; Milan, Italy; Mexico City, Mexico; Durban, South Africa; and San Juan, Puerto Rico. Projects focus on locations such as Accra, Ghana; Caracas, Venezuela; Knoxville, TN; and Chicago, IL where the Graham Foundation is based. The innovative projects are led by eminent and emerging architects, artists, curators, filmmakers, historians, and photographers, among other professionals. New York, NY (Riot) Through: The Fold, The Shatter Linking the use of glass as a material representation of power and simulated intimacy in architecture with the long history of anti-Black violence, surveillance, and policing—reified by the “Broken Window Theory”—and media representations of resistance to that violence, this project utilizes folded glass sculptures and concrete architectural forms to put pressure on anti-Black protocols and politics of movement, sight, and being seen.

New York, NY Unearthing: Toward a Black Feminist Ecology in Contemporary Earth Art In this text, the creative practice of Kiyan Williams is connected to a tradition of practitioners who use soil as a material and metaphor to unearth decolonial histories and fugitive futures.

The Graham realizes this vision through making project-based grants to individuals and organizations, and by producing exhibitions, events and publications.

The Graham Foundation was created by a bequest from Ernest R. Graham (1866–1936), a prominent Chicago architect and protégé of Daniel Burnham.
