Submitter's Note: If ever there was an album to listen to in order at least once, it would be this. It is, according to the band, "a sprawling five-act rock opera about the internet, culture, human relationships, and the apocalypse". Technically the album invites you to choose your own ending, but I think there's a lot of meaning in listening all the way through. As a heads up, the album is, at various points, quite emotionally heavy.

I figured just giving a litany of band names and saying "theyre really good dude trust me" with no further info wont encourage anyone to actually check them out so I've carefully selected a few of my favorite "niche" albums to recommend with a little write up so you can decide if you'd be interested 😁 or you can pelt me with rocks thats cool too
Now Hear This by Sumack (2000)
A mostly indie rock/power pop record with that distinct Y2K-era brand of Quirkiness that I love so dearly. I think of it as a fusion of Fountains of Wayne's Traffic and Weather and Beck's Odelay. it's hard to believe I only found out about this album 6 months ago because it feels like I've been listening to it for years. Regarding Saturday and Superdome are the real standout tracks.
Swim Out Past the Breakers by Telethon (2021)
Telethon's concept album The Grand Spontanean is a harder sell due to its length so this is the more accessible pick. I admit their body of work does get bit samey after a while, but they channel everything I love most about this upbeat style of power pop/pop punk and I gladly eat it up.
Sand (And Other Mysteries) by OK Glass (2021)
Every once in a while someone will recommend me an artist because "they sound like They Might Be Giants" but I haven't heard anything else that sounded THIS much like TMBG. it's uncanny to me how perfectly they capture the essence of TMBG's 2000s/early 2010s era. I feel bad comparing them to another band so heavily but, as John Linnell once said, I'm Impressed.
The Chinchilla Album by Uncle Outrage (2008)
Hooray electroclash!!! this band is chaotic, abrasive, and irreverent but each track is mercifully short. rather MSI-adjacent (for better or worse) but with a crunchier, scrappier production. some dumb fun for when I want the audio equivalent of sour skittles.
note: these two aren't nearly as niche as the others which I didnt realize until I double checked the stream numbers after writing this but whatever I still love them and I will tell people about them every opportunity I get !
Dangerous Jumps by Shredders (2017)
A side collab between rappers P.O.S and Sims with producer Lazerbeak, all members of the hip hop collective Doomtree. infectiously catchy, polished beats and energetic flows. I especially reccommend if you like Run the Jewels. check out the rest of the Shredders discography as well as the solo artists' and Doomtree's work, all of it's amazing!!
The Swimming Hour by Andrew Bird's Bowl of Fire (2001)
Andrew Bird's solo work is far from obscure, but lesser known are the three albums released under this name at the beginning of his career. this quickly became one of my favorite albums ever after discovering it just a year and a half ago, and it's another one that feels like it's been with me forever. A wonderful tableau of twangy folk blues, haunting ballads, and the orchestral sound of a bygone era.

rules: tag 9 people you want to get to know better. i was tagged by @msmargaretmurry
last song: well ive been on taylor swift lockdown for the last week but the last song i listened to is whatever was playing when i left the bar i was at last night... i dont remember what it was but the playlist slayed and i know i heard me and my husband by mitski near the end so lets just go with that
last show: im choosing to go podcast for this one. ive been marathoning paul f tompkins's old podcast spontaneanation over the last couple months so as a little birthday treat yesterday i relistened to my favorite episode for the.... 8th time at this point? it starts with an interview with ira glass and then afterwards theres a narrative improv about jury deliberations and its 4 people playing like 15 characters trying to keep track of it all and it makes me laugh out loud every time
currently watching: YELLOWJACKETS!!!!!!! i was sick last week and marathoned the entire show and its SO CRAZY!!!!! WHATTTTT A SHOW!!!!!! im not the hugest tv show watcher especially not... prestige tv? im either watching the reality dating show of the month with my bachelor watch group (we are actually off the bachelor these days but we havent found a better name yet) OR im rewatching the same 3 shows i already like. so its exciting to be invested in a new good tv show that im watching all by myself without anyones help!!! cant wait to see whatever fucked up shit those girlies do next
currently reading: i just finished reading (an incredibly overdue library book called) Harvard's Secret Court: The Savage 1920 Purge of Campus Homosexuals and now im starting (a less overdue library book called) Death in the Mudlick: A Coal Country Fight against the Drug Companies That Delivered the Opioid Epidemic. as you can see i went to the library in january planning to go on a nonfiction kick which has now turned into a finish all my library books so i can return them before i have to pay to have them replaced kick!
current obsession: i cannot stop watching sheep shearing videos on youtube. it started with cow hoof cleaning which became horse shoe replacing and i cant imagine where the algorithm will take me next but im keeping fingers crossed its yarn spinning!!! other obsessions include like... everything ive already mentioned of course. and also the improv class im taking right now which i cant shut up about because its one of THE funnest things ive ever done. AND ALSO im obsessed with actively pursuing closer friendships with the people i think are super cool. so its very exciting that you tagged me in this!!!! thanks!!!!!
im tagging: anyone who wants to play the game! if youre seeing this consider yourself tagged

Chicago has reached the bipolar phase of its winter where it tries to kill us all by snowing, then getting outrageously cold, then snowing again before the temperature rises to just a teensy bit above freezing, then drops again. So the streets and sidewalks are deathtraps, but the Danger Beagle laughs in the face of peril. She still wants her 6+-mile walk everyday. So I have these yaktrax things that help at least a little with not dying of the sidewalk bashing in my occipital. They are a sort of rubber frame that, in theory, stretches around the outline of the sole of one's shoe. Except my winter boots are for dudes, because I have not found a pair for women that are not absurd in prioritizing look over functionality (see above re: mandatory 6+-mile Danger Beagling daily). I bought the yaktrax for my dainty lady feet shoes, though, and my boots are, of necessity, rather too big for my feet. The result is that he yaktrax seem to want to escape. Yesterday, I lost one and the Spousal Unit graciously hunted it down. Today, I suddenly realized outside the dog park that I had lost both. I was going to write them off, but I was pretty sure it had only been a short while since I lost them. An apparent digression: Lately, I have been re-listening to all of "Sparks Nevada: Marshal on Mars" in order. I am out of the Pod F. Tompkast, Spontaneanation, Stay F. Homekins, and The Neighborhood Listen. I am out of Craig's List and Settling the Score. Danger Beagling consumes a LOT of podcasts, friends. So, Sparks it has been, and I have this to say: —Goddamn if that theme song is not a jolt of endorphins every single time —Sara Watkins' POW! is still the POW! to beat —I can't believe I'd forgotten how straight @paulftompkins plays it when he sings the theme song when the Jupiter Spy is Sparks —I can't believe I'd forgotten how he then utterly destroys MEJ when the Jupiter Spy is Croach and MEJ is just trying to get through the song. ANYHOODLES. Despite my LIMITED HUMAN SENSES, and my life-long urban dwelling, I was inspired NOT to surrender to the loss of my yaktrax, because there's crunchy, crunchy snow all over, so I was leaving two sets of footprints (no, Jesus does not come into this), and I was reasonably sure that the tall weeds (Danger Beagle loves the tall weeds—she once flushed a Bun and a Barn Cat in rapid succession and she will NEVER FORGET) immediately next to the off-leash part of the dog park was the most likely place for them to have been yanked off.
Reader, I tracked those yaktrax. Praise Nanotech.

PS. Vi povas plenumi ambaŭ taskojn.
#Mi_estas_ĉi_tie_eterneco
263. Two choices for today:
- the first. Show spontaneous kindness and tell us about it. And remember that kindness is selflessness, above all.
- the second. Tell any verse of Agnia Lvovna Barto.
PS. You can complete both tasks.
#I_am_here_eternity

Hey! I want to talk about my longtime friend Eban Schletter WHO IS STILL VERY MUCH ALIVE. After 20+ years of frequent collaboration with me (and SO MANY other people) Eban is finally taking the time to focus on his OWN projects.
I cannot fully express how much better Eban has made everything he’s touched. Working with him on various projects has been nothing but a dream. I think we only ever had two arguments in all the years we’ve worked together & they were both brought on by extreme stress. Not bad!
He is able to do so many different things: write, play, produce, goddamned SOUND EFFECTS, whatever. All at the same time. And always excited, always laughing, always amped by creativity (and an inhuman amount of coffee).
He has done so much for me (and countless others) and I am so, so happy that he is putting his foot down and doing his own projects. He has more than earned the right to be choosier about what he does and focusing on his own creativity.
In addition to being a creative genius he is a gracious, graceful man, one of the best people I’ve ever known. He is a wonderful husband, father and friend. I hope he’ll jump on stage with me every once on a while to play piano while I ramble on and on.
I’ll be doing some live shows soon, and normally he’d be there for these types of shows. It’ll definitely be an adjustment without him, but his spirit will be present in the stuff I do that I built with him way back when. I can’t wait to see what he builds himself.
I love you Eban! SHINE ON YOU CRAZY DIAMOND
