Dad: Has (Bro’s Girlfriend) seen Jupiter Ascending yet?
Bro: I don’t believe she has.
Dad: You two should watch it, it’s bonkers in the best way. It’s the Wachowskis, it’s a lot of fun
Bro: Is that the one where Channing Tatum -
Me and Dad: Yes.
Dad: And Sean Bean’s in it and he doesn’t die!
Bro: That was my next question! (And presumably the one immediately after it.)
#family shenanigans#this prompted by a discussion of Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy after Bro and GF watched it over the weekend#that then turned into the three of us just discussing best bits of Hitchhiker’s Guide in general#(Bro and I have both read the book and saw the movie in theaters but had not watched since until Bro and GF did)#(Dad having been introduced to it via a friend who had cassette tapes of the original radio play and as he puts it he was spoiled since)#while my mother who is NOT a sci fi person on the whole was I must assume mildly baffled by this all#as we all discussed the sperm whale and the bowl of petunias bit you know as you do with no further context

I gotta know, what is your writing process? Is there a specific mindset you get into or can you just write anywhere? take me through the process please:)
Hey there! Okay, wow, so. I'm going to attempt to answer this without sounding like a lunatic. It's going to be long so I'll put it under the cut for those of you who want to move on.
First, my actual writing process, which is mostly planning.
The first thing I do is decide how I'm ending. I'm a work backwards kind of writer, probably because I'm a teacher and that's how we plan, the first thing we decide is what we want them to know. So in writing, I always decide, "How is this going to end?" and write that first. I've had the final scene of I'll Ride in my google docs since about 3 hours after I saw TG:M for the fourth time (I saw it 12 times in theaters, hence the lunatic comment above, but I digress).
Once I know how it's going to end, I decide, who are the characters? Where is the setting? What is the conflict going to be? Once I have a vague idea of that, I start my google doc for my outline. Since I write both POVs, I do three columns:
chapter number
POV
main scenes / summary
I'm not someone who writes out every little thing in an outline. Just to give you an idea, here's the summary for chapter 8
title: that fear that’s inside you will lift, give it time
-Ice & his fam vs. The Colonel Who Is An Ass -Sarah is a gem and already knows he’s gay and loves him anyways because, she’s A Gem™ -ice talks to Pete on the phone after dinner, listens as Mav and Bradley read the dinosaur book to him -ice goes to the o club to see the boys and is all ‘yo maverick is fucking struggling also we’re all adopting bradley’ and the boys go ‘aiight cool bro’ -slider pins him against a building and is like “so how long have you been fucking mitchell” and ice is like ‘fuck off ronnie’ and ronnie is all ‘ice for fucks sake how stupid do you think i am i don’t give a fuck if you like dick i know you’re in love with him i’m not an idiot’ etc -He checks out books after Mav’s panic attack on how to help with trauma
So as you can see what I had in my outline isn't exactly what happened, it's basically just "which scenes do I want in this part". I don't write them in order I just kind of write the main things I want to happen, the scaffold if you will, and then I build the house. I usually go through 2-3 drafts which is why it sometimes takes me a long time to post. It's a 4 step process.
+ decide the scenes I want to see + write the main scenes + put them in chronological order in a new doc + go back and fill in details to connect the scenes together
I'm a very visual person and I have a gift of being able to read something and play it like a movie in my head while I'm reading. It's actually called "visualization" and lots of people can't do it which is my theory why they hate reading but that's whole other conversation. The point is I make the movie in my head, but I pay attention to - where are they? What are they doing? How are they moving? Where are their hands? Ice picked something up, now he has to put it down, where is he going to put it down, how, when, etc. I call it setting the scene but I don't know what it's actually called. As a reader it annoys me when I have no guide on what they're doing in a scene so I try to include those details just because it's easier for me to picture it and I hope it's the same for my readers.
Sometimes my brain decides to do other scenes and I'll add those in as I go. Sometimes my chapters get too long and I have to shove scenes down into the next chapter. It all lives in my google doc so I can keep track. When I'm working on a chapter I will just highlight what I've written so I can see what I still need to write.
Once it's written, and I think this is the most important part, I go back and reread. The whole thing. Start to the end of my new chapter. I check for: 1. am I following my own canon 2. do I have a plot hole on accident, and if I do, I have to fill it 3. do details match (like descriptions) 4. does it flow Sometimes I don't like the flow and that's why I will scrap sections and rewrite them to get more in the headspace of whoever the POV character is. This is extremely difficult for me to do with Ice, he's the harder of the two to write and his chapters take me a life age. I've straight up had Mav's chapters done for over a year. It's the Ice ones I'm working on now. Some of the later chapters will have both POVs just because Ice is so hard for me right now.
Once I have it done I send the link over to my beta. She's great and gives feedback on scenes etc. (Love you mtnofgrace!) and helps me to check that it makes sense / is in character / etc.
Then, I post! I can write pretty much anywhere, and I get into the writing mood by listening to the Top Gun soundtrack mostly. Or just rewatching one of the movies if it's been a while since I've written. Some days I write nothing and others I crank out thousands of words, it just kind of depends on if my muse is flowing. Listening to asmr Top Gun youtube videos with the music and jet noises helps me focus that's what I usually listen to while writing.
Hope that answered your question!

My opinions on Disney and non-Disney movies (+ my opinion on the new Mario movie)
Okay I don't know if this is too early or too late to give my opinions but I just wanted to say, since I put out an instagram live and also got caught up since I went to see the new Super Mario movie yesterday. If you want to read all this, feel free to chat with me in the comments section and give me your opinions, I'm here for it!
As someone who enjoys animated kids movies, and hates adult movies with a lot of action and violence, I'm sorry to say that I'm not much of a Disney fan, and didn't have the Disney childhood that everyone else did. I'm 20, and the first Disney movie I watched was Up, so I was probably about 7 or 8 when it came out. As a kid I mostly watched Disney Channel, Disney Junior/Playhouse, and Disney X.D. I grew up in America so we had other channels like Sprout and Qubo too. I didn't grow up on classic Disney movies, in fact, I actually hate a lot of them, and notice a lot of problematic things about them that someone who grew up with them might not notice. There are some of the older movies I like, but it's not most. I'm here to bring up the topic of Disney and how I feel about them, and i feel like they're a very greedy company. I mean, they've been greedy for like 100 years, they are still very greedy more than ever.
Disney is finally getting what they deserve after all these years, with these lesser known companies starting to become the big shots now! Do I feel bad for Disney? NO! They're doing this to themselves. I don't like to hate too much on Strangeworld, even though in my opinion, it looked like a really dumb movie. I don't want to hate on it because unlike all these live action remakes that they're crapping out one after another, Strangeworld was it's own story. Would I ever watch Strangeworld? NEVER! I'm just happy that these underrated companies like DreamWorks, Illumination, Sony, and Aardman are given a chance to shine for once! I thought that new Super Mario Bros and Puss in Boots Last Wish were the two best movies of 2023! I also saw an animated German-British film called "The Amazing Maurice" and I enjoyed it but not as much as the other two. For years, I've only been going to non-Disney movies in theaters (the last Disney movie I saw in theaters was either Zootopia or Moana, can't remember) and my mom and I were always really pleased with them. I'm sure most of you have never heard of Artic Dogs or Rock Dog, but those are incredible and underrated movies for the whole family. My mom and I especially enjoyed the first Sing movie by llumination, and Buster was our favorite! Sing 2 was even better and I wish I could have seen it in theaters with her before she passed. I'm really happy for Illumination and that they're branding is not just a bunch of silly singing minions, but they are now a confident company that creates their own characters as well as use old ones too. I mean, Disney has branded off recycling 200 year old fairytales, and then later on, books that they could buy the stories from. Walt Disney literally tried to buy the Moomins from Tove Jansson, but Tove was smarter than that! And if you think Toy Story was original, might I remind you that the "Talking toys" concept was around for almost 100 years before the movie came out? I'm really happy for both DreamWorks and Illumination that they have been getting so much admiration lately!
Another thing I wanted to discuss was the new Illumination movie, "Migration" and how it looks a lot like Duck Duck Goose, which is another really underrated movie. However, I respect Illumination for creating a completely different story and completely different characters. Duck Duck Goose is an underrated masterpiece by Origin Pictures, that Netflix took credit for, and it was never released in theaters. It deserved so much better, along with Wish Dragon which was in the same boat. I still hope Migration does well, because it looks amazing! As someone who's always loved ducks, and grew up in the northeastern part of the U.S, there's something about the scenery in the trailer that made me feel nostalgic. I know the scenery looked really similar to Duck Duck Goose, which also makes me feel nostalgic even though Duck Duck Goose does take place in China, which I've never been too. (The scenery is a bit different if you look closely, but not that much). Again, I hope to see Migration do really well.
To finish things off, I'll make another post, another time, with my top 20 underrated Non-Disney family animated movies but I think you all want to hear my opinions on the new Super Mario movie! I loved it! 9/10, and the "Peaches peaches" song was the best part! The Puss in Boots one was incredible too, and 10/10 for that one! Bowser and Jack Horner are actually really well written villains, evil and funny! (Bowser a bit more since he had a soft side, where as Jack Horner was just a dumb jerk). I thought that Puss in Boots Last Wish deserved to beat Disney, along with this new Mario one! They both deserve it!
If you learned anything from this crazy essay, just remember that not all movies have to be made by what was always considered "The best" and that smaller companies will often surprise you!

(rbing from a side blog!) ty for tagging, this is unexpected, but oh so fun! hope this is good
Last Song: "Full speed ahead" from Epic the musical. one of the artists i follow has a odyssey/illiad brainrot and they have been making animatics to the songs. tbh listening to music from animatics i watch is 70% how I get playlist.
Favorite Color: Purple or black. But idk abt that. its all abt how they are used and where. I like black and white horses, green-blue-white winter landscapes and I think I'm more associated with brown and orange. so its all abt context I think (tho yellow just sucks)
Last Movie/Show: Last movie would be Barbie i think. I saw it in theaters, but its been recently added to streaming and me and mom tried showing it to my bro and dad, but they are not into it. sad. with shows I tried both Midnight Gospel and Pokemon Concierge, but I didn't rlly vibe with em or finish em. so if something recent I finished would be arcane, took me a while to get to it...
On My Watchlist: I'm waiting for Hazbin Hotel! I love Helluva Boss and just can't wait for more. I love the detailed art style and worldbuilding. wawaswsasws Also there is Arcane s2 coming out this year, so im looking forward to that. I also heard a lot of good abt Blue Eye Samurai, so maybe, but its so 18+ that I might not be able to watch it on tram as i usually do when I want to have a moment watch stuff, so it might take a while to get to it.
Last Game: I'm doing Hades again. after getting my save deleted I hope to 100% it again and challenge myself with more heat. I also hope that once I'm done with my current project, I will be able to study its art style and be able to recreate it.
Last Book: ghghjgh I don't read books anymore at all, I used to in middle school but now too little time. so I mostly listen to audiobooks. rn I need to get through "Przedwiośnie" (translates to more or less a time between winter and spring where one turns into other) for school. I don't like it. if something for myself then "Bajki robotów" ("robot fairytales"), I just wanted to came back to it. so fun, love the worldbuilding, one of the few sci fi things I like.
Sweet/Savoury/Spicy: Savoury. I'm very picky when it comes to sweets, I don't like most of them. I think i only like chocolate based sweets. I don't like spicy food, I just dont. Can say I fancy savoury so much more then others, but statistically I'm more likely to like eating something from that side of taste spectrum.
Last Search: "short multiplication formulas" (or however it translates) yeahhh I'm not great at math and remembering stuff from it
Current Obsession: wawa I think I'd call my obsession my projects since they take so much time, mind and energy. so I'm currently sewing a plush for my friends b-day and making rw polls. except for school and playing a run of hades every now and again thats all I do. Maybe I can say that Mind Scanners still is still my brainrot, but I wouldn't say anything grips me that much now.
Fic I'm currently reading: I've been trying to read through "Ad Astra" by Hellenite based on OSMP. Really good read. I've been reading it in most random of places when I have a moment: when waiting on spine rehab, in my acting class in the basement. so it has attached some weird memories to it for me.
as for tagging... maybe @kociamieta im sorry I don't have much anyone else to tag, so no pressure or somethin..
Tagged by the cool @ardate
Last song: Dentist! from the 1986 Little Shop of Horrors movie
Favorite color: Red :]
Last movie/show: If I recall correctly, Mao Mao: Heroes of Pure Heart! I've been listening to Channel Toon News on and off recently and half of every episode is dedicated to just going over and chatting about an animated movie or show. Mao Mao just happened to be one of them, and it was something I wanted to watch at some point, so....
Next on my watchlist: The Dungeon Meshi anime, but I'd like to read the manga first
Last game: Oh boy... I've been cycling through a couple of games everyday for a bit just to get the daily rewards, but the last I've played played would be A Little to the Left
Last book: Umm... I'm almost finished reading Calvin and Hobbes? I would like to read House of Leaves though, but for that I think I'd need my own copy
Sweet/savory/spicy: Savory
Relationship status: Taken by my beloved woowah 💖
Last thing I searched online: "defunctland tweet filmmaking"
Current obsession: Not big on anything at the moment, but I guess the biggest thing is Find Everything (findeverythinggame.com btw)
Greatest flaw: My massive ego, and this goddamn skin
Fic I’m currently reading: None
Tagging: @salcreus @pencil-merchant @pointsfortrying @pigswithwings @rolex-kaard @grapemoon and uhh i don't know who else

Relationship! w/ Stray Kids
Chan— for the last three years you were stuck with the same terribly boring ballet partner. so when the cutest, and get this actually talented guy decided to joined the class. you might have maybe begged Shin Ryujin to trade partners at the cost of setting her up on a date, with your older brother. sorry bro, but love trumpets all.
Minho— you and minho has been classmates since kindergarten and for that, he detested you like no other. you always knew the right words to say to get under his skin. one day he spotted on your way to school, with terrible dark circles and ridiculous bed hair. he couldn’t contain his curiosity, and so he approached. just as he made his way towards you, he saw you chase after a cat, who so happened to run down the street, and up a old tree near your school. it was almost impressive seeing you run after the little thing. you weren’t exactly a track-star, and as horrible as it seemed minho liked seeing you struggle just a bit. but nonetheless being the good samaritan he was, he went to safe the lost angel. he finally was able to save the poor thing. at first he was puzzled by the sincerity of your thanks he received from you. he was surprised to say the least, he’ll never admit it, but he can tolerate you a little bit more now. but let’s make thing clear he likes your cat, not you. that is for now, at least.
Changbin— is the local tattoo artist you admire and wants to get a tattoo from, but he always declines to schedule a appointment. claiming he’s super booked at the moment. to bad your kinda dense, and this excuse worked for the last three years. but truth be told changbin thinks your already a beautiful work of art. in short he always declines booking a session, as a excuse to keep seeing you. being the well known and respectable artist he is, in the industry. no one questioned why he put you on they’re blacklist just in case.
Hyunjin— he’s your enemy turned friend turned lover, need I say more? you were jealous of his long silky hair, but he recommended his shampoo-conditioner combo. and now your in love.
Han— he likes horror movies so when he over hears you, a well liked, and very pretty might he add, classmate saying you had an extra ticket to the newest exorcist movie his ears perked up; and he ultimately volunteered, tribute. but poor guy, ended up biting more then he could chew. he screamed, and yelled all throughout the movie, and eventually got you both kicked out of the theater. but it wasn’t all that bad, because he got to hold your hand. and even got to exchanged phone numbers with you. so as a apology he bought you cheesecake at this near by cafe he enjoys, and you both decided to do a retake of your failed movie date, but this time horror was off the table.
Felix— your childhood best friends with felix. and you love squishing his face in your palms, just so you can count his freckles. but it’s frustrating because you always lose count, and have to start all over, again. felix won’t admit it but he doesn’t mind the way you stare at him. or the way he thinks it’s adorable how your eyebrows scrunch. or how your rosy cheeks blush every time he moves closer, or how your rosy pink lips move. he likes it when you count, his freckles. but he likes it even more when you lose count, because he can get to look at you even longer.
Seungmin— you where his best friend since kindergarten so you knew him pretty well, or you hoped so. all his good and bad qualities. but for the life of you, couldn’t figure out why seungmin for as long as you have knew him never introduced you; or better yet why he never had a girlfriend? you wondered. one day after a study session with the said boy, you were cleaning up and noticed he forgot some textbooks. you decided to organize them and put them away for now. as you picked them up a notebook fell, and you swore you stopped breathing as you read from the now open pages. “she’s so beautiful, words can’t even begin to describe it. she’s my whole world and more. I truly believe, I’m in love.” at that moment you felt your stomach twist in a thousand knots. seungmin liked someone, but you weren’t happy about it. and somehow you found yourself putting away the journal on your shelf with the rest of the forgot books you never bother reading, twice.
Jeongin— you were one year his senior and just happened to tutor him, back in his first year of high school. like many he was a poor adolescent with bad acne and braces. he could never imagine himself talking, let alone being tutored by you. but here you were, the most intelligent, and beautiful girl he had ever set eyes on, lecturing him on the importance of quadratic equations. and he really thanked the higher beings he was failing algebra.

domestic life with the bros headcannons!! (GN MC)
a/n: thank you for all the likes and reposts on my mammon headcannon posts I LOVE ALL OF YOU GUYS SO MUCH MWAH MWAH MWAH!!!
i was imagining doing headcannon posts for the others but could really only think of like one thing for each so i scratched the idea and wanted to make this!!!
also i thought abt it and i feel like most of the brothers would live with you in the human world if you wanted to live there so expect that
IM ALSO SORRY FOR NOT INCLUDING ASMO AND BELPHIE I REALLY HAD A HARD TIME THINKING OF HEADCANNONS FOR THEM
but i hope you still enjoy my luvs<3
˚₊· ͟͟͞͞➳❥ ˚₊· ͟͟͞͞➳❥ ˚₊· ͟͟͞͞➳❥ ˚₊· ͟͟͞͞➳❥ ˚₊· ͟͟͞͞➳❥ ˚₊· ͟͟͞͞➳❥ ˚₊· ͟͟͞͞➳❥ ˚₊· ͟͟͞͞➳❥
lucifer:
this is lucifer we’re talking about you know which on wakes up first
but sometimes he’ll surprise you and sleep in a little bit cuddling you and just admiring your pretty sleeping face
that image puts a smile on his face every time
this relationship is basically lucifer works you stay home and look pretty
(unless you have a job, he’ll understand but he’ll make sure you come home before him so he can open the door to you welcoming him and giving him a big hug)
since he’s a busy man he doesn’t have time for breakfast unless you make him but he never leaves the house without his lunch you make him and a kiss
he’s a little child but you love him so you don’t mind
he’s thinking about you all day expect texts from him just checking in on you or asking what you and his brothers are up to
(he may be ok on the outside but on the inside he’s jealous that he doesn’t get to be around you all the time like his brothers. texting you is just his way of virtually being with you)
on rare occasions after work he’ll bring home a bouquet of your favorite flowers and say some cheesy line that never fails to bring a smile to both of your faces
after dinner you both sit in his office talking about each other’s day and make small talk
this makes lucifer do his work faster because he wants to spend real time with you so after finishing it he plays a new record he got the other day and you hold each other tightly dancing the night away
mammon:
you two can never get up in the morning because mammon adores cuddling you
he’s like a mama bear protecting his baby cub so take that as a warning you will be late for all morning activities/work
but on the off chance you wake up early mammon either is making breakfast for you to eat in bed, coming back with coffee/tea or is taking a shower
sometimes he’s cooking hint sometimes only because his cooking is kinda bad. i also wanna think that human world cooking is slightly different than devildom cooking
(in the human world mammon is a househusband it’s my headcannon)
if mammon doesn’t have a job he’ll stay home and think of ways to make money while also trying his best to clean the house
and totally not missing you and thinking about you and possibly stealing you stuff to pretend you’re still at home with him
when you get home mammon can be seen acting like a puppy reacting to his owner coming home hugging and kissing you(he just loves you<3)
as tradition you guys spend the night eating dinner, watching a movie cuddling and talking about your day
levi:
the only reason levi wakes up before you is for livestreams, mobile game rewards and to sometimes surprise you like making you coffee/tea or making breakfast for the both of you
his idea of breakfast is either sugary cereal or some sort of pop tart/toaster strudel you know?
that’s why you always have to make breakfast lunch and dinner unless you wanna eat takeout and junk food for the rest of your life
because levi is an otaku he would have a lot of careers he could focus on the most popular one being a streamer
when levi tells you he wants to live in the human world expect a LOT of requests for living arrangements
like for example he needs extra rooms for his figurines, possible streaming room, if you think henry and lotan aren’t moving in with you then guess again massive pool anyone??? he also wouldn’t mind a movie theater in the house as well :)
just like mammon when you get home he’s excited to see you again because he feels like a decade passed since he last saw you
you decide to order takeout again and levi tells you about this new anime he discovered (you know living in the human world and such) so with your takeout in one hand and levi’s hand in the other you both cuddle watching anime until you inevitably fall asleep on the couch
satan:
you both wake up at the same time i wanna say but satan might beat you to the punch because he may or may not have been reading the entire night or woke up early and started reading
always expect tea on your nightstand every morning and kisses from satan waking you from your slumber
you both make breakfast together everyday listening to jazz music or classical and sometimes dancing around the kitchen just laughing satan spinning you around both of you truly enjoying each other’s company
satan wants a fresh start living in the human world and such
even though is name is a dead giveaway
so he works at a bookstore maybe like barnes and nobles but i wanna say he works at a little library not known and enjoys the piece and quite while reading a new shipment of books they just got
when you come home from work you see satan sitting in his usual chair reading welcoming you home
you make tea for the both of you and sit on his lap resting your head on his/his shoulders while you talk about each other’s day or you sit there in silence soaking up each other’s presence
beel:
i know i basically said for all of these that the brothers wake up first but when it comes to beel he really only wakes up first for two reasons one to eat and two to go to the gym
you know beel’s gone because your personal heater is gone and without him in bed with your basically freezing your butt off sorry mc
you both cook meals together it not only makes beel happy that he’s eating but food is basically his love language so both of you cooking together giggling and talking makes him happy more than you’ll ever know
speaking of food beel will always do the chores especially grocery shopping
the only way beel is moving to the human world is if belphie is coming to. no if, ands, or buts about it. he doesn’t have to live in the same home as you guys but the twins are a package deal mc you should of known that from the start
if you do decide to move to the human world i feel like beel would work as a florist or a baker or that’s what i want to believe anyways
i feel like it would be something nice and relaxing for him and he would definitely come home with tons of flowers and be like “here mc i got these for you 🥺🤲” or he would come home and be like “mc i made these today at the bakery and i made extra so you and belphie could have some🥺🤲”
like i said before the twins are a packaged deal so the three of you definitely have meals together everyday
you don’t understand mc the idea of you, him, and belphie together eating it makes his whole heart swell with happiness this is something he only thought could happen in his dreams he never thought it would happen in real life
and if you decide to have kids... he could just cry right then and there HE CANT HANDLE THE CUTENESS AND THE FAMILY DINNERS WITH UNCLE BELPHIE AND YOU MC YOU’RE KILLING HIM
have a wonderful mother’s day y’all if you celebrate it and i hope you like this post!!! i probably won’t do asmo and belphie separately just because i really couldn’t think of headcannons for them lolz

Sam and Paulina are assigned as partners for a school project.

“I don’t get what the big deal is.”
Sam stared at Paulina, who was standing in the middle of the hallway twirling her hair between her fingers.
“You don’t get what the big deal is? Your boyfriend literally just beat someone up!”
Paulina scoffs. “He’s not my boyfriend! And that kid was a loser anyway. His family is just a bunch of freaks.”
Sam looked at Danny who was still laying on the floor, his breath wheezing from when it was knocked out of him. “He’s not a loser.” Sam mumbled.
“Excuse me?” Paulina looked over her nails.
“He’s not a loser!” Sam stomped up to Paulina, her face inches from the other girl’s. “He’s really nice and actually likes hearing about things I want to talk about! Unlike you.”
Tossing her hair over her shoulder, Paulina turned her nose up into the air. “That’s because all you like is that spooky ooky goth stuff. No one wants to listen to you talk about ghosts and spiders and witches.”
“He does.”
“That’s because he’s a loser.” Paulina poked a finger into Sam’s chest. “Why don’t you just drop him and this freaky goth phase and come hang out with your real friends.”
“You are not my friend.”
Paulina froze. “What?”
“I don’t know what bug crawled it’s way up your ass Paulina, but if this is how you’re going to treat people now I don’t want to be your friend anymore.”
She watched as Sam walked away from her and helped Danny off the ground. Sam whispered a few things to him and he nodded. They began to limp their way to the nurses office.
Paulina clenched her fists together and her throat tightened. That’s fine. She didn’t need Sam. She had plenty of other friends. What did one falling out matter? She turned around and stomped her way in the opposite direction towards the cafeteria.
She didn’t need Sam Manson.
QQQQQ
“But Mr. Lancer!” Paulina whined, her hands resting on the top of her desk as she stood up in protest.
“I’m sorry Ms. Sanchez, but you and Ms. Manson will be partners for this project.”
Sam raised her hand. “I’d rather do my project on my own than work with her.”
Lancer pinched the bridge of his nose. “You two are partners for this project, end of discussion.”
“But-” Both girls chorused.
“That’s enough! Ms. Sanchez, take your seat.”
Paulina huffed and crossed her arms as she sat down. Why did Lancer have to assign her and Sam to work together? Hasn’t he figured out that they hate each other yet?
Her gaze flicked over to where Sam was sitting. She was angrily scratching something into her notebook. She paused and her eyes met Paulina’s. They stared at each other for a moment before Paulina sneered in her direction and looked away.
Paulina sat angrily stewing in her seat until the bell rang. She grabbed her backpack and slung it over her shoulder, heading out of the classroom at a brisk pace. She was putting the combination into her locker and had just gotten it open when Sam walked up and pushed it closed.
“What do you want, Manson?” Paulina snapped.
Sam rolled her eyes. “We’re supposed to work on that project together, remember? When are we going to meet for it?”
“I don’t know. Why don’t you just do it on your own and write my name on it.” Paulina twisted the dial on her locker again.
“Nu uh. If we’re forced to be partners you’re gonna help with it.”
Paulina groaned and opened her locker again. “I guess we can start working on it today after school.”
“Great. I’ll meet you at your house when school is over then.”
“What?” Paulina squawked and turned towards Sam. “Why my house?”
“I don’t want my parents thinking we’re friends again.”
Paulina just stared at her but frowned when Sam pushed the locker closed again and started walking away. She clenched her fists. As if they would ever be friends again.
The rest of the day passed by both too quick and slow at the same time. She dreaded having Sam come over and having to talk to her so much that even though the day dragged on and on, when she was at home and a knock sounded on the door it felt like she had just been standing at her locker.
Paulina opened the front door, a bored look on her face when her eyes met Sam’s. They stood there for a moment before Paulina waved her in. Sam stepped in, looking around and Paulina closed the door behind her.
“So what is this project we’re supposed to be doing anyways?” Paulina led the way to the kitchen where her backpack sat on the table.
Sam sighed. “You weren’t even paying attention when he went over it?”
“I was too busy being angry at Lancer.”
Rolling her eyes, Sam set her backpack on the table and pulled some papers out. “He wants us to find a screenplay to go over. We have to read it and analyze it like we would for a book in class but he wants us to perform part of it in class.”
“Why?”
“I don’t know Paulina!” Sam threw her hands up in the air. “Why do they make us do anything? Now pick one from this list.” She threw a piece of paper at Paulina. “This is a list of plays I thought we would both be interested in.”
Paulina stared at Sam, stunned that she’d even consider Paulina’s interests when they clearly hated each other. Slowly, she looked down at the paper, her eyes scanning over the list. One popped out to her.
“Isn’t this one a musical? Does that count?”
Sam peered around at the paper. “I would think so. They’re basically plays, just with songs. I can’t see why it wouldn’t count.”
“Hm.” Paulina pursed her lips. “If we do this one are we gonna perform a song or a different part of the musical?” She looked over at Sam. She had a dangerous, determined look on her face.
“Only if we want to blow everyone else out of the water.”
Paulina stared for a few seconds, her cheeks heating up. Then she coughed and looked back at the paper.
“Yeah, okay. Let’s do that one.”
QQQQQ
“Why are they all named Heather anyways?”
Sam shrugged as Paulina squinted at her copy of the script.
They sat in the middle of the stage in the empty auditorium. The rest of their class was in the library, but Mr. Lancer had given them permission to go over their own project in the auditorium.
“What I wanna know is why there’s always so much drama in musicals set in high schools.” Sam wrinkled her nose. “Like I know we have the A-Listers and everything but this in here is so excessive.”
“What, you don’t like drama?” Paulina rested her chin on her hand, shooting Sam a smile.
“I don’t like high schoolers killing other high schoolers.”
Paulina’s smile fell. “Oh.”
“Yeah.” Sam looked down and away. She took a deep breath and stood up with her script in her hand. “Anyways. Let’s figure out which part we want to perform for the class.”
Paulina took a look at the list of songs they had. “What about Seventeen or Shine a Light? I listened to those a couple times and they both have different tones but they seem like they’d be fun to sing.”
Sam nodded. “And there’s not much about sex in either of those. That’s another thing, why do musicals about high schoolers talk so much about sex?” She faked a gag. “I think those are good choices because some of those songs would be so embarrassing to perform in front of the class.”
Paulina frowned. “If this one has stuff in it that makes you uncomfortable why’d you include it on the list?”
Sam shrugged. “I figured it’d make Lancer squirm. He didn’t actually give any specifications on what we could pick anyways. Now let’s get started. Which part do you want?”
“Oh oh! Can I have the lead part? That is, if you didn’t want it?” Paulina started standing up from where she sat on the floor.
Sam shook her head. “You can have it if you want. Want to practice Seventeen first?”
“Sure.”
The music started playing after Sam hit a button on her phone and it filled up the room.
Paulina took a deep breath.
“Fine, we're damaged
Really damaged.
But that does not make us wise.
We're not special.
We're not different.
We don't choose who lives or dies.”
Paulina looked up at Sam as she sung the lyrics.
“Let’s be normal. See bad movies
Sneak a beer and watch TV.
We'll bake brownies,
or go bowling --
Don't you want a life with me?
Can't we be seventeen?
That's all I want to do
If you could let me in.
I could be good with you.”
Paulina’s cheeks flushed but she continued singing.
“People hurt us.”
“Or they vanish…”
Goosebumps traveled over Paulina’s arms as Sam’s voice rang out towards her.
“And you're right that really blows.
But we let go…”
Sam looked up and met Paulina’s eyes and it felt like Paulina was electrocuted. She pulled her eyes away and looked back down at her paper. They finished up the song and Paulina kept staring at her paper until Sam left out a breathless laugh.
“That was so cool! I’ve never really thought about doing theater or anything because it’s not very, you know, goth. But that was exhilarating!”
Paulina watched as Sam laughed and smiled. She could feel herself falling in and laughed herself.
QQQQQ
Paulina and Sam laughed as they walked out of the school together. Their project was due in two days and they were heading to Sam’s house to practice their song a bit more.
“I can’t wait to see Lancer’s face when we discuss what the musical is about. Do you think he’ll-”
BOOM!
Sam got cut off as something exploded ahead of them, sending both girls sprawling to the ground.
Looking behind them from where she was on the ground, Paulina saw a giant animalistic ghost. It looked somewhere between a cross of a snake and a cat and it looked like it was about to shoot another blast off from it’s fangs.
Just as the blast was launched towards Paulina, something crashed into the side of the ghost's head, sending the shot soaring into the sky instead.
“Run! Get out of here!” Phantom shouted as he shot back at the ghost.
She stood up shakily but didn’t run away. She looked around the front of the school for Sam, where she saw the other girl in the middle of the sidewalk holding a...lipstick? With a determined look on her face.
What was she planning to do with a tube of lipstick?
Paulina had begun inching her way over to Sam when a green blast came out of the lipstick she was holding onto. It shot into the ghost a couple of times, distracting it from Phantom’s attacks for a moment.
It bared its teeth at Sam but Phantom punched it in the side of the head. Snarling, it batted Phantom away, sending it flying across the parking lot and it faced back towards Sam.
Paulina felt like everything was happening in slow motion. When the ghost bared its teeth again, when another ball of ectoplasm started dripping from its fangs, when Paulina ran desperately across the parking lot and barreled Sam out of the way and onto the ground just before the blast created a crater in the ground where she stood a moment before. The ghost started snarling at them again.
“Hey ugly!”
Phantom viciously threw another ectoblast at the ghost, stunning it before finally pulling it into his thermos.
Paulina gasped and turned back to where Sam was still laying underneath her.
“Sam! Are you okay?”
“Yeah, I’m-” Sam paused, frowning and her face flushing before she spoke again, looking over Paulina’s shoulder. “Shut up.”
“What?”
Sam groaned. “That dip is making faces over there.”
Paulina turned around to see Phantom making kissy faces at them. She raised an eyebrow at him and he paused to give her a grin.
“Okay well, my job is done. Have fun you two!”
And he jumped into the air and flew away.
“Seriously though.” Paulina crawled off of Sam and helped her up. “Are you okay?”
“Yeah. Why’d you do that anyways?” Her brows furrowed. “I would’ve been okay. You didn’t have to do anything.”
Paulina gaped at her. “It was about to attack you! It tried! It left a crater in the ground where you were standing! Why wouldn’t I have done anything?”
Sam looked away. “I didn’t think you cared.” She said softly.
Paulina’s stomach plummeted. “I wouldn’t have two weeks ago.” She whispered. “But then we got paired up for this project, and I realized that you’re actually very cool and that I was just really dumb in middle school.”
Sam looked at her.
“And I think I’ve always sort of missed you. But I decided to never stop being mad so I never figured that out.”
“I guess I did the same thing too.” Sam said. “I could’ve decided to talk to you on my own and talk things out after a while but I just didn’t want to.”
“But it was my fault. I was the one being a terrible person.”
“Are you going to continue being a terrible person though?”
Paulina’s mind went back to the first time Sam’s rage had been bestowed upon her, when one of Paulina’s friends beat up one of Sam’s friends. She didn’t want to be the cause of that again.
“No.”
“Well.” Sam smiled. “That’s the important part. That you’re capable of change.” She picked up her bag from where she had dropped it during the attack. “Now come on, my mom was gonna make cookies when we got home.”
Paulina smiled back at her and held up her arm to the other girl. Sam looked at it and linked her own arm with Paulina’s. Together they walked away from the school.
QQQQQ
Sam and Paulina’s chests rose up and down as they held their arms up into the air after performing the piece they picked from their musical. The class clapped for them and they lowered their arms and bowed.
“Very nice, Ms. Sanchez and Ms. Manson. Though, I wish you had picked something more appropriate than.” He squinted at the sheet they handed him. “Heathers the musical.”
Sam snickered. “Of course, Mr. Lancer. We’ll try to keep that in mind next time.”
Lancer gave her a look. “Yes, be sure that you do. Alright up next we have-”
Sam and Paulina walked back to their desks and sat down. Paulina shot a look to where Sam was sitting with Danny and Tucker, who were both making kissy faces at her while she swatted at them. Sam’s gaze met hers and Paulina waved at her before blowing a kiss to her across the room.
Sam’s face turned the brightest shade of red Paulina had ever seen it and she opened a folder and stuck her face inside it. Danny and Tucker were both teasing her even more, seemingly losing their mind about it. Paulina giggled at them and turned her focus back to the front of the classroom.

Supernatural stars reflect on the show's undying legacy
Jared Padalecki, Jensen Ackles, and Misha Collins discuss 15 years of fantasy, family, and flannel.
"We only get one shot at this." Sam and Dean Winchester are surrounded. The monster-hunting brothers are standing on the edge of a cliff. They look to Castiel, their brother in arms — or is it wings? — but even he can’t help. One move in the wrong direction could ruin everything. After years of fighting demons, going toe-to- toe with Satan himself, and saving the world multiple times, they once again find themselves in a position of having to perform under pressure. But this situation is unlike anything they’ve ever dealt with before. All eyes are on them as they have one shot…at getting the perfect picture.
It’s a dry, hot August day in Malibu — when people were still allowed to gather outside — as Supernatural stars Jensen Ackles, Jared Padalecki, and Misha Collins prepare for the last setup of their final Entertainment Weekly cover shoot. With a bottle of champagne in each of their hands, Ackles once again reminds them they get “one shot” to do this right. But if their characters can shoulder the weight of the world, surely these three can handle a photo. Read the whole story below
The champagne soaking is meant to be a celebration of 15 years, of making television history. Supernatural, the story of two brothers destined to save the world, is the longest-running genre show in the history of American broadcast television. (So old, the first three seasons shot on this thing called film.) What started as an underdog story, living its first few years on the verge of cancellation, has become an institution, a milestone to which other shows aspire. Supernatural not only survived the move from The WB to The CW after its first season — it’s now the final WB show left standing — but became the backbone of the now highly successful CW network. Over the years, the sci-fi series has aired on every weeknight, helping to launch shows including Arrow and The Vampire Diaries. The network moved it one final time, most recently, to Mondays, to help Roswell, New Mexico expand its audience. “Supernatural is a major link to many of the shows that we have successfully built to market,” The CW’s chairman and CEO Mark Pedowitz says. “Almost every one of our shows has had it as a lead-out or a lead-in.”
And to think, it all started as a promise to bring horror to television. After Supernatural creator Eric Kripke had finished working with Warner Bros. on 2003’s Tarzan series, he pitched the idea of a reporter who travels around hunting urban legends. As he puts it, it was a Kolchak: The Night Stalker rip-off. But when he realized the story would benefit from having brothers at its core, he started writing. “At the time, The Ring and The Grudge were huge hits in theaters,” Kripke remembers. “We said, ‘We’re going to take that experience and we’re going to put it on TV,’ and the initial goal was to be scary.” After Warner Bros. passed on his first, what he calls “uptight,” draft, Kripke had to reassess the kind of show he was creating. “I canceled all my Christmas plans and wrote that second draft in three weeks,” he says. “That was when the show got its sense of humor, because I was locked alone, over winter break, in my office. I couldn’t do anything fun, so I started entertaining myself.”
The show was still scary, but it was also funny and, over the years, would continue to evolve. Sure, you could say it’s a little bit X-Files — in its early days, the show often used the line “The X-Files meets Route 66” — and there were definite Star Wars influences (Sam and Dean were originally based on Luke Skywalker and Han Solo). But no combination of pop culture is going to perfectly describe Supernatural because the show has managed to do something remarkably rare in the age of peak TV, where audiences are so overwhelmed with content that an original idea seems foreign: It’s created a truly one-of- a-kind experience.
For starters, it’s a show about two flannel-wearing, beer-loving, blue-collar dudes from Kansas who for a good chunk of their lives traveled from cheap motel to cheap motel, paying for gas and greasy diner food with a mix of fake credit cards and money they earned scamming people at the pool table. “Almost all television is about rich people or, at the very least, middle-class people,” co-showrunner Andrew Dabb says. “The fact that we’ve been able to take this Midwestern blue-collar approach to this genre feels like we’re breaking the mold.”
But the mold-breaking didn’t stop there. Supernatural might’ve started out as a horror show with some snarky one-liners, but it evolved into some of the boldest, most experimental (and certainly strangest) stories on the small screen. “We’re a show of big swings,” co-showrunner Robert Singer says. “I used to say, with every idea, ‘This will be a home run or they’ll cancel us,’ but every year we wanted to do something really nuts." And when he says nuts, we’re not just talking about the episode with the talking teddy bear or the murderer targeting imaginary friends. Those are just some standard monsters of the week. We’re talking about the black-and-white episode shot like a classic Hollywood monster movie, or the episode that introduced Chuck (Rob Benedict), a prophet — who’d later reveal himself to be God — who was famous for writing a book series called Supernatural. That, of course, led to Sam and Dean attending a Supernatural fan convention as the show continued to redefine what it meant to inject a series with meta humor. And the swings never stopped. Season 13 featured a Scooby-Doo crossover as an animated Sam, Dean, and Castiel solved a case alongside the Mystery Inc. gang. And in season 14, after giving God a sister a few years prior, the show made the Big Man Himself its final villain. “I don’t think any idea, barring some production concerns, has been viewed as too crazy,” Dabb says. “Because we know that our fans are smart and that they’ll follow these guys anywhere.”
So long as each episode features Sam and Dean — and the occasional heartfelt talk on the hood of the Impala — the show can do just about anything, which is another reason Kripke had to rewrite his first draft of the pilot. Originally, Dean was the only brother who knew about monsters growing up, bringing Sam up to speed later in life. It wasn’t until Kripke figured out that they needed to be in this together that the series snapped into place. Because at the end of it all, they’re two brothers bonded by the loss of their mother and a life spent on the road with an absentee father. (It just so happens that their mother was killed by a demon and their father hunted them.) The familial dynamic — the irrational codependency, as the angel Zachariah (Kurt Fuller) once called it — is the most important part of the show. “The first inkling I had that we had something special was shooting the pilot,” Kripke says. “It was the scene on the bridge when Sam and Dean talk about their mother. It was the first time that you really saw their chemistry and their connection as brothers on full display. Because I’ve always said this show begins and ends with whether you believe that sibling relationship.” But Sam and Dean weren’t just the center of the show. For many years, they were the show.
Supernatural has never been an ensemble drama. For the first 82 hours of the series, Ackles and Padalecki were the only long-running series regulars — Katie Cassidy and Lauren Cohan briefly joined for season 3, appearing in 12 episodes combined. But Sam and Dean weren’t just in every episode; they anchored every episode. (They skipped table reads because there would’ve been only two actors there.) “I had many moments of not only questioning, ‘Can I keep this up?’ but an answer of ‘I cannot keep this up,’ ” Padalecki, 37, who’s been vocal about his struggle in the early seasons, says. “I borrowed strength from Jensen.” But even Ackles, 42, admits it was a tough job. “The 23-episode seasons were nine and a half months of filming,” he adds. “It was a lot of work, but I always came back to: I still enjoy it, I still like telling the story, I still like these characters and the people I work with.”
Not only did the guys stick around, they built a reputation of having created one of the warmest sets in the business, with a number of crew members staying with the production all 15 seasons. It all dates back to a talk Kripke had with his stars during the filming of the series’ second episode. “I said, ‘The show is about your two characters, and with that comes this responsibility,’ ” Kripke says. Padalecki remembers the exact setting of what he calls their “Good Will Hunting moment,” a bench in Stanley Park in Vancouver, where they film. It was a chat both actors took to heart. “We’d both been on other sets,” Ackles says. “We knew we wanted to enjoy it, to have fun with our crew; we wanted them to like us and us to like them and to have fun doing what we do.” It’s an attitude Pedowitz hopes bleeds into other CW shows, an attitude that launched an annual tradition where the CW chairman/CEO takes his new casts out to dinner with the Supernatural guys, a chance for the vets to share advice. “It’s always the most flattering situation,” Padalecki says, recalling a moment he had a few years back with the late Luke Perry, who was a part of the Riverdale cast. “Luke was sitting next to me and he was like, ‘What y’all have done and what we hear about you guys, it’s really cool to be associated with y’all in some way, shape, or form,’” he recalls. “And I’m sitting there pinching myself.”
It’s a behind-the-scenes legacy that’s perhaps just as impressive, if not more so, than the onscreen legacy. Collins, 45, who started as a guest star and the show’s first angel in season 4, has become the show’s third-longest-running series regular, and he still remembers walking onto set his first day. “When you’re coming onto a show as a guest star, it can be a little bit nerve-racking,” Collins says. “Coming to this set, it was an immediately different vibe. Think- ing about working on other shows in the future, that’s something that I aspire to bring with me.”
A similar reputation extends to the fans as well. Not only is the #SPNFamily one of the most dedicated fandoms out there, it’s also known to be a pretty nice one. (Not many fandoms can say they’ve helped launch a crisis support network for their fellow fans.) But their dedication isn’t just about seeing what crazy twist God throws at Team Free Will next. Thanks to fan conventions and social media, the viewers are just as invested in the lives of the actors. Supernatural’s not just about the words on the page, it’s about the actors saying them. “When you’re dealing with the public taste, there’s an alchemy of great writing, a great idea, and the close-up that’s required,” Peter Roth, chairman of Warner Bros. Television Group, says. “You need stars who you want in your living room.” And you need stars who want to be in your living room, and who, even after 15 years, care so deeply that they get emotional while taking photos in Malibu.
"It's going to be a long eight months," Ackles declares. Standing on that same ledge, an hour before the champagne shot, Ackles, Padalecki, and Collins walk away from a group hug after unexpectedly starting to tear up. It might be the setting — looking out over the ocean — or the occasion: their last-ever photo shoot. Or maybe it’s the fact that they’re almost a month into filming their final season.
It had been a question posed to the stars for years: How long will this show continue? How long can it continue? “Even my mom and dad were like, ‘When are you going to be done with this?’” Ackles says with a laugh. It was a decision the network and studio had ultimately put into the actors’ hands, and it was a conversation they’d been having for a while. Back in 2016, Padalecki told EW, “If we don’t make it to [episode] 300, I think Ackles and I will both be truly bummed.” But in season 14, they hit 300…and then kept going. While filming episode 307, they announced the upcoming 15th season would be the end, which will bring them to a total of 327 episodes when all is said and done. “[Jared] and I were always married to the fact that we never wanted to go out with a diet version of what we had,” Ackles says. “We wanted to have enough gas left in the tank to get us racing across the finish line. We didn’t want to limp across.” Padalecki remembers the moment it hit him — not the decision to end it, but rather the opposite. “We had that moment where he and I both realized that we didn’t want it to end,” he says. “It finally got to a point, ironically, where it was like, ‘I never want to leave this. I could do this until the day I die, and then if I get the choice when I’m dead, I’ll re-up!’ But you never want to be the last person at a party. We just knew. That’s not to say there haven’t been vacillations, but we all trust the decision that was made.”
Starting in July 2019, the cast and crew returned to Vancouver to begin filming the final season, but in March 2020, with two episodes left to go, they were sent home. For years, fans had wondered what, if anything, could stop the Winchesters, and now it seems we have the answer: a global pandemic. As sets closed amid social-distancing measures due to the spread of COVID-19, it didn’t take long for fans to start connecting the dots, sharing relevant GIFs from episodes that featured viruses, most notably Chuck telling Dean to hoard toilet paper “like it’s made of gold” before the end of the world in season 5’s “The End.” (Did we mention that Supernatural is also kind of psychic? In a season 6 episode, Dean calls Sam “Walker, Texas Ranger,” which just so happens to be the role Padalecki has lined up after this ends.)
When production paused, it all felt a little like we were living in an episode of the show, just waiting for Sam and Dean to drive up in Baby, open those creaky doors, and save us. They might not be able to do quite that, but the thing with the Winchesters is that they never stay down for long. When Supernatural is able to safely resume production, it will. And though there are only two episodes left to film, fans will enjoy a total of seven unseen hours, including the return of Charlie (Felicia Day) and a mystery woman who visits the bunker and, for some reason, gives Sam and Dean all the holidays they never got to celebrate. “She makes Christmas for them and Thanksgiving, birthday parties, and all that. It’s a very good episode,” Singer says, adding, “I don’t know when it’s going to air.”
That’s the thing—no one knows, not even the guys who took out Yellow Eyes, stopped Leviathans, defeated Death himself, and are supposedly destined to be the messengers of God’s destruction. But Sam and Dean do know the value of a good plan B. “Obviously it’s a horribly unfortunate situation we’re in, but the silver lining is that it gives us an opportunity to recharge,” Ackles says. “We had just finished episode 18, we shot one day of episode 19, and I was reading these two monster scripts thinking, ‘It’s like we’re at the end of a marathon and they want us to sprint for the last two miles.’ I feel like this almost gives us an opportunity to refocus and go into the last two episodes and hit them with everything we got.” Because when they do return to set, shave their quarantine beards, and step back into Sam and Dean’s shoes for the last time, they’ll have one shot at ending this thing…and they’re determined not to miss.

The Many Saints of Newark Is a Trashy Gangster B-Movie, There’s Nothing Wrong with That
https://ift.tt/3uzeb2V
When I first walked out of The Many Saints of Newark, my initial reaction was to call it a B-movie. What I didn’t say at the time, however, was how much I love B-movies. While I saw the flaws in the film and couldn’t wholly endorse it to cinemagoers spoiled by the perfection of The Godfather, Goodfellas, and New Jack City, I can wholeheartedly recommend it to people like me. Those who appreciate the low-budget gangster movies sometimes because of their warts. A majority of fans of The Sopranos will have the same reaction: Meh, The Many Saints of Newark could have been better. So when’s it playing next? I plan to see it again, more than once, on the big screen.
In one of the film’s quieter moments, the Soprano family is gathered around a TV set, watching the classic Key Largo (1948). The specific scene on the screen begins when Humphrey Bogart’s cynical combat veteran Frank McCloud defuses a tense situation with the gangster Johnny Rocco. Played by Edward G. Robinson, Rocco is very loosely based on Charles “Lucky” Luciano, the godfather of organized crime, who had been deported and barred from American soil. He is suffering the same doubts Tony Soprano (James Gandolfini) worries about in the pilot episode of The Sopranos: Are the best days of this “thing” over?
All gangsters want, as the black and white film explains, is more. Will they ever get enough? They never have. I don’t suppose they will. It is the same for gangster genre fans. We want more. And it doesn’t have to be great. “I don’t want it good. I want it Tuesday,” Jack Warner famously said about the gangster films his studio excelled in. Warner Bros. invented the gangster genre, and I felt a thrill when their name came first on the screen during The Many Saints of Newark. WB’s Key Largo is a prestige film. It’s got John Huston directing, he’d go on to make amazing mob movies, culminating with his magnificent Prizzi’s Honor. Key Largo boasts an A-list offering with top stars like Lauren Bacall, Claire Trevor, and Lionel Barrymore. And it’s a pairing of two legends who take their performances seriously, and believe in the art of acting: Bogart and Robinson.
But Bogart and Robinson made four B-movie gangster classics before they made the prestigious Key Largo: Bullets or Ballots, Kid Galahad, Brother Orchid, and The Amazing Dr. Clitterhouse, which was so badly scripted that the two leads took to calling it “The Amazing Dr. Clitoris.” I’ve seen it eight times. Are there holes in the story? Of course. And they don’t get any better after the third viewing. What does get better is watching the performances of two professional actors in films they are on record as saying they did not like. Twice, as it turns out, because it was revived as a radio play a few years later, according to the book Bogart, by A.M. Sperber and Eric Lax.
Robinson played a psychiatrist, studying Bogart’s gangster, and the two characters bond while keeping a wary distance. This is very similar to the dynamic between Tony Soprano and Dr. Melfi (Lorraine Bracco) on The Sopranos. She even worried the mob boss was using their therapeutic sessions in the furtherance of crime, something Bogart’s character did in the B-movie gangster film, King of the Underworld, which is awful and I never miss. I love that movie, not in spite of Bogie’s misunderstanding of the meaning of “the moronic type,” but because of it. He doesn’t do that in other movies, even in the masterful B-movie gangster comedies, It All Came True and All Through the Night.
But Bogart also made Dead End (1937), a quality piece, which happens to be my favorite film, ever. Based on the play by Sidney Kingsley, it spends a lot of its time in the same way The Many Saints of Newark does: teaching the young generation how to be gangsters. This is seen even more blatantly in the film Angels With Dirty Faces (1938), which paired James Cagney with the Dead End Kids. But threads of this even reach the juvenile delinquent movie Blackboard Jungle, also not a big-budget film, but realistic enough to show the teenagers were actually moving swag for bigger names.
It happens in real life, the mob looks to street gangs for promising young movers. Future dons make their bones wearing colors. Gangster films capture this. From Nino Brown (Wesley Snipes) in Mario Van Peebles’ New Jack City to Spike Lee’s Clockers, original gangstas groom carbon copies. Dickie Moltisanti (Alessandro Nivola) sees potential in young Tony Soprano (Michael Gandolfini) during The Many Saints of Newark. Great potential.
When Tony and his young gang hijack the Mr. Softee truck and give out ice cream to kids for free, it feels like The Sopranos creator and The Many Saints of Newark co-screenwriter, David Chase, was chasing the feel of the East Side Kids. Old Bowery Boys movies were aired weekly in the New York/New Jersey area when Tony was growing up, and all those movies were made by the icon of B-Movie studios, Monogram Pictures.
Monogram Pictures sat on Hollywood’s “poverty row,” and churned out pictures as fast as Detroit made cars. The Bowery Boys comedy troupe made almost a picture a month alone. But just like the Warner Brothers assembly line occasionally manufactured transcendent art, some of the cheapies are magnificently crafted. Sopranos fans should watch Angels in Disguise, one of the lesser-known gangster comedies, directed by Jean Yarbrough in 1949. It is, if not the first, one of the first mock-documentaries, and it is a good bet David Chase saw it, more than once. Leo Gorcey is even more of a master of the malaprop than Carmine Lupertazzi Jr. (Ray Abruzzo) on The Sopranos.
Monogram Pictures also caught the attention of French directors François Truffaut and Jean-Luc Godard, who structured films based on their model, according to the book The Films of Jean-Luc Godard by Wheeler W. Dixon. It is no wonder, the studio’s almost-no-budget 1947 quickie Dillinger turned RKO contract player Lawrence Tierney into an icon of film noir. The Fall Guy, from the same year, dared to coke up the star Leonard Penn, and we’re not talking soda pop.
Also in 1947, 20th Century Fox’s low budget Kiss of Death introduced the screen audiences to the sadistic Tommy Udo. The role earned Richard Widmark an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor, and the admiration of “Crazy” Joe Gallo, whose insurrection against the Five Families of New York crime was the basis for Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather.
Low budget studio production paved the way for the independent film movement in America, which The Many Saints of Newark proudly emulates. Director Alan Taylor recently admitted to Den of Geek that he’s “drunk deep at the well of Scorsese,” and we can see Mean Streets all over the Sopranos prequel. Also in evidence is Barry Shear’s Across 110th Street (1972), which pitted the Italian mob against Black gangsters; John Cassavetes’s 1976 indie classic, The Killing of a Chinese Bookie; The Pope of Greenwich Village (1984), directed by Stuart Rosenberg; and Abel Ferraro’s King of New York (1990).
The Many Saints of Newark is also too closely related to Wim Wenders’ 1977 gangster film, The American Friend, which cut corners on plot points as much as it did on budget. Logic is replaced by street smarts, and continuity is a game of three card monte in B-movie gangster films. The Many Saints of Newark is not exempt. There is a scene where one mobster’s mistress is sleeping with the rival for his turf. Except for one rude stare, the audience doesn’t see it coming. But how it turns out, with the convenient surf and turf to cover the evidence, is telegraphed from a mile away.

The St. Valentine’s Day Massacre in Real-Life and Pop Culture
By Tony Sokol
Arthur Penn’s genre-redefining Bonnie and Clyde came out in 1967, the same year as The St. Valentine’s Day Massacre. Roger Corman spared every expense for his B-movie mobsterpiece. There are scenes where it is visibly apparent that a fleet of vintage background cars are just the same few automobiles driven in circles around the set. I’ve seen both movies multiple times, and enjoy them equally each time.
Just because The Many Saints of Newark isn’t a perfect film does not make it less of a classic. It certainly doesn’t make it less appealing for repeated viewings. The film follows a grand tradition of gangster filmmaking: street legal over mainstream currency, it could have fallen off the back of a truck. I would love to see whatever scenes were cut to make it fit into a two-hour viewing, because the film felt rushed. But I will watch it again.
The Many Saints of Newark premieres in theaters and on HBO Max on Friday, Oct. 1.

Whenever I visit Olvera Street, as I did a couple of weeks ago, my walk through the historic corridor is always the same.
Start at the plaza. Pass the stand where out-of-towners and politicians have donned sombreros and serapes for photos ever since the city turned this area into a tourist trap in 1930.
Look at the vendor stalls. Wonder if I need a new guayabera. Gobble up two beef taquitos bathed in avocado salsa at Cielito Lindo. Then return to my car and go home.
I’ve done this walk as a kid, and as an adult. For food crawls and quick lunches. With grad students on field trips, and with the late Anthony Bourdain for an episode of his “Parts Unknown.”
This last visit was different, though: I had my own camera crew with me.
My last chance at Hollywood fame was going to live or die on Olvera Street.
I was shooting a sizzle reel — footage that a producer will turn into a clip for television executives to determine whether I’m worthy of a show. In this case, I want to turn my 2012 book “Taco USA: How Mexican Food Conquered America” into the next “Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives.” Or “Somebody Feed Phil.” Or an Alton Brown ripoff. Or a TikTok series.
Anything at this point, really.
For more than a decade, I’ve tried to break into Hollywood with some success — but the experience has left me cynical. Personal experience and the historical record have taught me that studios and streamers still want Mexicans to stay in the same cinematic lane that American film has paved for more than a century. We’re forever labeled… something. Exotic. Dangerous. Weighed down with problems. Never fully developed, autonomous humans. Always “Mexican.”
Even if we’re natives of Southern California. Especially if we’re natives of Southern California.
I hope my sizzle reel will lead to something different. I doubt it will because the issue is systemic. Industry executives, producers, directors and scriptwriters can only portray the Mexicans they know — and in a perverse, self-fulfilling prophecy, they mostly only know the Mexicans their industry depicts even in a region where Latinos make up nearly half the population.
The vicious cycle even infects creators like me.
As the film crew and I left for our next location, I stopped and looked around. We were right where I began, except I now looked south on Main Street. The plaza was to my left. City Hall loomed on the horizon. The vista was the same as the opening scene of “Bordertown,” a 1935 Warner Bros. film I had seen the night before. It was the first Hollywood movie to address modern-day Mexican Americans in Los Angeles.
What I saw was more than déjà vu. It was a reminder that 86 years later, Hollywood’s Mexican problem hasn’t really progressed at all.
Birth of a stereotype
Screen misrepresentation of Mexicans isn’t just a longstanding wrong; it’s an original sin. And it has an unsurprising Adam: D.W. Griffith.
He’s most infamous for reawakening the Ku Klux Klan with his 1915 epic “The Birth of a Nation.” Far less examined is how Griffith’s earliest works also helped give American filmmakers a language with which to typecast Mexicans.
Two of his first six films were so-called “greaser” movies, one-reelers where Mexican Americans were racialized as inherently criminal and played by white people. His 1908 effort “The Greaser’s Gauntlet” is the earliest film to use the slur in its title. Griffith filmed at least eight greaser movies on the East Coast before heading to Southern California in early 1910 for better weather.
The new setting allowed Griffith to double down on his Mexican obsession. He used the San Gabriel and San Juan Capistrano missions as backdrops for melodramas embossed with the Spanish Fantasy Heritage, the white California myth that romanticized the state’s Mexican past even as it discriminated against the Mexicans of the present.
In films such as his 1910 shorts “The Thread of Destiny,” “In Old California” (the first movie shot in what would become Hollywood) and “The Two Brothers,” Griffith codified cinematic Mexican characters and themes that persist. The reprobate father. The saintly mother. The wayward son. The idea that Mexicans are forever doomed because they’re, well, Mexicans.
Griffith based his plots not on how modern-day Mexicans actually lived, but rather on how white people thought they did.
A riot nearly broke out as Latinos felt the scene mocked them. It was perhaps the earliest Latino protest against negative depictions of them on the big screen.
But the threat of angry Mexicans didn’t kill greaser movies. Griffith showed the box-office potential of the genre, and many American cinematic pioneers dabbled in them. Thomas Edison’s company shot some, as did its biggest rival, Vitagraph Studios. So did Mutual Film, an early home for Charlie Chaplin. Horror legend Lon Chaney played a greaser. The first western star, Broncho Billy Anderson, made a career out of besting them.
These films were so noxious that the Mexican government in 1922 banned studios that produced them from the country until they “retired... denigrating films from worldwide circulation,” according to a letter that Mexican President Álvaro Obregón wrote to his Secretariat of External Relations. The gambit worked: the greaser films ended. Screenwriters instead reimagined Mexicans as Latin lovers, Mexican spitfires, buffoons, peons, mere bandits and other negative stereotypes.
That’s why “Bordertown” surprised me when I finally saw it. The Warner Bros. movie, starring Paul Muni as an Eastside lawyer named Johnny Ramirez and Bette Davis as the temptress whom he spurns, was popular when released. Today, it’s almost impossible to see outside of a hard-to-find DVD and an occasional Muni marathon on Turner Classic Movies.
Based on a novel of the same name; Muni was a non-Mexican playing a Mexican. Johnny Ramirez had a fiery temper, a bad accent and repeatedly called his mother (played by Spanish actress Soledad Jiminez ) “mamacita,” who in turn calls him “Juanito.” The infamous, incredulous ending has Ramirez suddenly realizing the vacuity of his fast, fun life and returning to the Eastside “back where I belong ... with my own people.” And the film’s poster features a bug-eyed, sombrero-wearing Muni pawing a fetching Davis, even though Ramirez never made a move on Davis’ character or wore a sombrero.
These and other faux pas (like Ramirez’s friends singing “La Cucaracha” at a party) distract from a movie that didn’t try to mask the discrimination Mexicans faced in 1930s Los Angeles. Ramirez can’t find justice for his neighbor, who lost his produce truck after a drunk socialite on her way back from dinner at Las Golondrinas on Olvera Street smashed into it. That very socialite, whom Ramirez goes on to date (don’t ask), repeatedly calls him “Savage” as a term of endearment. When Ramirez tires of American bigotry and announces he’s moving south of the border to run a casino, a priest in brownface asks him to remain.
“For what?” Ramirez replies. “So those white little mugs who call themselves gentlemen and aristocrats can make a fool out of me?”
“Bordertown” sprung up from Warner Bros.’ Depression-era roster of social-problem films that served as a rough-edged alternative to the escapism offered by MGM, Disney and Paramount. But its makers committed the same error Griffith did: They fell back on tropes instead of talking to Mexicans right in front of them who might offer a better tale.
Just take the first shot of “Bordertown,” the one I inadvertently recreated on my television shoot.
Under a title that reads “Los Angeles … the Mexican Quarter,” viewers see Olvera Street’s plaza emptier than it should be. That’s because just four years earlier, immigration officials rounded up hundreds of individuals at that very spot. The move was part of a repatriation effort by the American government that saw them boot about a million Mexicans — citizens and not — from the United States during the 1930s.
Following that opening shot is a brief glimpse of a theater marquee that advertises a Mexican music trio called Los Madrugadores (“The Early Risers”). They were the most popular Spanish-language group in Southern California at the time, singing traditional corridos but also ballads about the struggles Mexicans faced in the United States. Lead singer Pedro J. González hosted a popular AM radio morning show heard as far away as Texas that mixed music and denunciations against racism.
By the time “Bordertown” was released in 1935, Gonzalez was in San Quentin, jailed by a false accusation of statutory rape pursued by an L.A. district attorney’s office happy to lock up a critic. He was freed in 1940 after the alleged victim recanted her confession, then summarily deported to Tijuana, where Gonzalez continued his career before returning to California in the 1970s.
Doesn’t Gonzalez and his times make a better movie than “Bordertown”? Warner Bros. could have offered a bold corrective to the image of Mexican Americans if they had just paid attention to their own footage! Instead, Gonzalez’s saga wouldn’t be told on film until a 1984 documentary and 1988 drama.
Both were shot in San Diego. Both received only limited screenings at theaters across the American Southwest and an airing on PBS before going on video. No streamer carries it.
How Hollywood imagines Mexicans versus how we really are turned real for me in 2013, when I became a consulting producer for a Fox cartoon about life on the U.S.-Mexico border.
The title? “Bordertown.”
It aired in 2015 and lasted one season. I enjoyed the end product. I even got to write an episode, which just so happened to be the series finale.
The gig was a dream long deferred. My bachelor’s degree from Chapman University was in film. I had visions of becoming the brown Tarantino or a Mexican Truffaut before journalism got in the way. Over the years, there was Hollywood interest in articles or columns I wrote but never anything that required I do more than a couple of meetings — or scripts by white screenwriters that went nowhere.
But “Bordertown” opened up more doors for me and inspired me to give Hollywood a go.
While I worked on the cartoon, I got another consulting producer credit on a Fusion special for comedian Al Madrigal and sold a script to ABC that same year about gentrification in Boyle Heights through the eyes of a restaurant years before the subject became a trend. Pitch meetings piled up with so much frequency that my childhood friends coined a nickname for me: Hollywood Gus.
My run wouldn’t last long. The microagressions became too annoying.
The veteran writers on “Bordertown” rolled their eyes any time I said that one of their jokes was clichéd, like the one about how eating beans gave our characters flatulent superpowers or the one about a donkey show in Tijuana. Or when they initially rejected a joke about menudo, saying no one knew what the soup was, and they weren’t happy when another Latino writer and I pointed out that you’re pretty clueless if you’ve lived in Southern California for a while and don’t know what menudo is.
The writers were so petty, in fact, that they snuck a line into the animated “Bordertown” where the main character said, “There’s nothing worse than a Mexican with glasses” — which is now my public email to forever remind me of how clueless Hollywood is.
The insults didn’t bother me so much as the insight I gained from those interactions: The only Latinos most Hollywood types know are the janitors and security guards at the studio, and nannies and gardeners at their homes. The few Latinos in the industry I met had assimilated into this worldview as well.
Could I blame them for their ignorance when it came to capturing Mexican American stories, especially those in Southern California? Of course I can.
What ended any aspirations for a full-time Hollywood career was a meeting with a television executive shortly after ABC passed on my Boyle Heights script (characters weren’t believable, per the rejection). They repeatedly asked that I think about doing a show about my father’s life, which didn’t interest me. Comedies about immigrant parents are clichéd at this point. So one day I blurted that I was more interested in telling my stories.
I never heard from the executive again.
A pair of boots
Five years later, and that Hollywood dream just won’t leave me.
I’m not leaving journalism. But at this point, I just want to prove to myself that I can help exorcise D.W. Griffith’s anti-Mexican demons from Hollywood once and for all. That I can show the Netflix honcho they were wrong for passing on a “Taco USA” series with the excuse that the topic of Mexican food in the United States was too “limited.” And the Food Network people who said they just couldn’t see a show about the subject as being as “fun” as it was. Or the bigtime Latino actor’s production company who wanted the rights to my "¡Ask a Mexican!” book, then ghosted me after I said I didn’t hold them but I did own the rights to my brain.
When this food-show sizzle reel gets cut, and I start my Hollywood jarabe anew, I’ll keep in mind a line in “Bordertown” that Johnny Ramirez said: “An American man can lift himself up by his bootstraps. All he needs is strength and a pair of boots.”
Mexicans have had the strength since forever in this town. But can Hollywood finally give us the botas?

Time To Change // Benny Weir X Reader
A/N: Hey loves. Please forgive my sorry ass for not uploading anything since the summer, I am very tired and things are not going as well as I wish it was right now. I would post a rant post or anything but I know you guys wouldn’t wanna read that and that’s why I try to keep my blog only as a writer one instead of making random posts that no one wants to read.
I just wanna say that the old show “My Babysitter’s A Vampire” was one of the greates shows out there on Disney, probably one of the last. I loved it a lot growing up and the cancelation of the show still pisses me off. I always loved Benny, he was my favorite character and to practice my writing since I dont even post anymore lol, I decided to go along with this. You’ll get something better one day but I will probably keep writing for MBAV (even tho the fandom is probably dead sdkjfnskjd)
SOMETIME DURING SEASON ONE
REQUESTS ARE CLOSED BTW (FOR NOW)
Requested: nope
Warnings: angst and a bunch of tears bro
-
You and Benny were a known dynamic duo. The two of you were often never seen apart. Being best friends, along with Ethan, since grade school and becoming a couple only a few months ago, life seemed great! You and Benny had never been closer and even with all the supernatural afflictions in Whitechapel, your relationship with him was almost perfect.
Until you started to notice Benny’s wandering eyes.
Even before you two dated, you loved each other. You loved and cared about Benny more than you ever though you could about someone. He was your best friend, how could you not care about him? But you always noticed you weren’t the only girl who caught his eye.
Sure you weren’t the most beautiful, gorgeous girl in the town. You considered yourself average and you were one smart cookie, clever and geeky. But just not like the other girls that Benny seemed to glance at.
It started out with the girl from the movie theater he kissed out of nowhere, the girl with the undead dog, then the cheer squad, and hell, even Erica got longing looks from him!
Benny wasn’t even the one to make the first move, you were the one who asked him out after hanging out at his house. You confessed to him, he told you he thought the same of you and later on, you two started to date. Ethan and Sarah were more than happy to support your relationship, it was bound to happen someday, they said. Your worries and insecurities slowly crept away and you were happy for a while.
A little more than three months into the relationship, you noticed out of the corner of your eye Benny’s looks and smirks towards other girls. He didn’t think you would notice, but of course you did. A lot of times while on a mission to stop a supernatural creature, if there was a hot girl involved, Benny would be flirting and staring.
Now, Benny wasn’t the worst boyfriend. If anything, he was great! You knew he loved you and he treated you like a queen. He wasn’t exactly...distant but as time went by, he stopped giving you the morning kisses and hugs you loved so dearly much and eventually stuck with a forehead kiss or a cheek kiss. And even those would be pretty rare during the day, not just the morning.
He would give you attention, but his focus would usually move right away to something else. You first just brushed it off as casual Benny, but not it was getting annoying.
You never stopped loving Benny, your love for him never lowered but didn’t exactly grow either. Sure, couples grow out of the ‘honeymoon phase’ and can grow apart but you didn’t want to believe you and him were growing apart, you wanted to grow with him in the relationship.
“But if he loved you as much as you loved him, he wouldn’t be flirting with so many girls while in a relationship.” Erica and Sarah had told you many times.
But you always brushed them off.
Benny wouldn’t hurt you, right?
Today was the last straw, for the past week, even when you were around, your so called boyfriend had made comments about other ‘hot babes’ in the school and you were not having it this time. Ethan, Sarah and Erica noticed your off mood today, but didn’t question it. They all knew what it was about, you told them about this weeks ago.
Everyday after school was over, Benny would walk with you on both of your ways home. You would walk back to your house and cuddle with him until he was forced to go home. Now, he barely stays for 15 minutes before going home. You really wished he stayed longer.
After school today was the same, you and the group would talk and discuss somethings for a while and then leave, Benny usually following behind you.
You waited in front of the school with everyone (including Rory) except for Benny. He mentioned something about needing to find a ripped page from his spell book. While you all waited for him, Sarah finally spoke up.
“So (Y/n), are you finally going to talk to him today about...you know?” She questioned. Everyone’s eyes turned to you as you nodded your head.
“Yeah...when he walks me home, I’m planning on just talking things out with him. It’s not what I had in plan before but maybe it’ll work!” You lightly smiled at you friends.
“I’m really sorry he’s been treating you like this. Of course it’s Benny and all but this is low even for him.” Ethan butted in.
You gave him a thankful smile and couldn’t help but silently agree. Erica gave you a comforting pat on the back and smiled at you. You weren’t the best of friends, but you still cared for one another.
“I’ll bite his head off if he continues to do it.” Erica ‘joked’ as she showed her fangs while winking at you. Sarah smacked her other hand and yelled in protest, causing Erica to whine.
“Oh please, as if you wouldn’t do it either-“
“Do what either?” Erica was interruped by a familiar voice, causing all of you to turn your bodies toward the man himself, Benny.
“Erica was just saying that she’ll bite your head off if you-mph!” Rory’s words were cut off but Sarah and Ethan covering his mouth.
The lot of you smiled awkwardly as a silence brushed you over you all. You just looked down at the ground, pretending as if you just saw something interesting.
“Right...well guys and gals! Guess who has two thumbs, a spell book and a soon to be newly mastered spell by yours truely?” Said Benny, carrying the first letter of the first word while pointing his thumbs toward himself.
“...who?” Ethan asked, although he already knew the answer. He and Sarah already uncovered Rory’s blabbering mouth by now.
“Your favorite spell master, me! Remember that I mentioned that ripped page from the book,” everyone nodded. “Well I just found a new spell that could be the best thing since Star Wars. A changing appearance spell! Think about it! I could change into any hot guy I want and all the hot babes would be after me!” Your head snapped up at the words coming out of his mouth.
Is he freaking serious? Right in front of his OWN GIRLFRIEND RIGHT NOW?
Everyone else, besides Benny, in the group stayed quiet for a moment, looking away awkwardly as they noticed your face change from a sad expression to an angry one.
“What? Look, I won’t actually do the spell but c’mon, you get to be whatever you want-“
“BENNY!”
Benny turned his finally turned his attention towards you, you hadn’t realized that he wasn’t even paying attention to you this whole time.
“Can I speak to you, alone. Right now.” You asked him, gesturing for him to go to the other side of the courtyard.
He nodded and headed over there with you. Benny glanced back towards his friends, but they all seemed to be slightly glaring at him or shaking their heads.
Finally, when you both were alone with no one around you two, you turned to him and spoke up.
“Are you kidding me, Benny?” The brunette looked at you with a confused face.
“Am I kidding about what?” He answered. You couldn’t help but roll you eyes at him, was he really this clueless or did he just not care at all?
“You! You, Benny and the spell! Actually, not just the spell! Are you even still aware that you are in a relationship?!” You spat at him.
Benny just scoffed.
“Babe, of course I do! That whole spell thing was just something I found and was trying to tell you guys about. It’s not a big deal!” The boy defended.
“Not a big deal? Well maybe not you to, but to your girlfriend it does! Your girlfriend of three months and yet here you are, talking about these hot babes and spells you could use to get them! I am your girlfriend, Benny! You seem to be forgetting that.” Benny started to grow annoyed with you and waved you off.
“If you wanna fight about your stupid jealousy, then I don’t wanna hear about it. I still care about you but there’s nothing wrong with-“
“EVERYTHING IS WRONG WITH THAT BENNY!”
Benny flinched in shock after you screamed out your words. You were always the quiet and shy person of the group, a badass but yet still quiet. You honestly couldn’t care less at this point if someone heard you guys, you needed to get your boyfriend’s head straight.
You didn’t even realize the growing tears in your eyes until one fell from them. Benny’s face formed into a guilty and sad expression.
“Benny...as your girlfriend and best friend, I have my own things and you have yours. We both have our own lives and I’m not going to control yours. But when you talk about other girls like that, like they’re a piece of meat and I’m just off to the sidelines like nothing then you can’t expect me to not be upset about it. I love you, Benny Weir. But clearly, you don’t love me enough to focus your attention on the one you’re supposed to love.” You finished, tears rolling down your face.
“Okay, okay, I get it. I’ll stop with the comments, I’ll stop looking at girls and I’ll show you that I do love you! I love you so much, (Y/n)! I-I can’t lose you!” Benny practically begged, holding your cheeks as the waterfall of tears continued.
“Please don’t cry...please don’t cry.” He said, trying to wipe your tears away, not even noticing the tears running down his face either. You pushed his hands off of you and backed away from him.
“P-people need time to change, Bens. You can’t change in just a few minutes. I-I...” You contemplated your next words until they finally came out. “I think we should break up. Or just...t-take a little break.”
Those words nearly tore Benny Weir’s heart in half. He loved you, he had loved you so much but didn’t show it. Benny had made the worst mistake in this life and he felt so guilty, more worse than when he messed up on his spells. And now he was paying the price for it.
“No...n-no no, please no. Anything but that, please, (Y/n)! J-just one last chance!” Benny begged.
He didn’t want to lose the best thing in his life, he wanted to stay with you. He wanted to love and cherish you for the rest of his life.
But he ruined that.
“I’m sorry, Benny...but both of us clearly need more time to change.” And with that, you left him behind, tears still falling buy slowing stopping while Benny’s only grew.
He had lost the love of his life. His best friend his childhood. His partner in crime.
Benny sulkily walked back to his friends, seeing that Erica and Rory had left, leaving only Ethan and Sarah behind.
He wiped his tears and tried to smile but his bloodshot eyes gave him away. Ethan and Sarah knew right away what had happened. Ethan walked up to him and rested a hand on his shoulder.
“Benny...I’m sorry.”
Benny didn’t say anything though, he was still trying to process what had just happened completely. Finally, he fell to his knees and sobbed while Sarah and Ethan watched pitifully.
She was right...he needed the time to change.

now buckle in bro!!!! the essays are incoming!!!
5. Name a movie that makes you genuinely laugh.
i swear on my life the Mortal Kombat movie from 1995 is a national treasure, it is SUCH a solid movie and has so many funny moments. Robin Shou makes such a 🥺🥺 Liu Kang, and jesus fuck he can be so savage when the script calls for it!! there’s one part where he takes Johnny Cage’s luggage and straight up fucking chucks it into the ocean + then bullies him about it later! honestly the Ballad of Johnny Cage and His Luggage is one of my favorite parts from the movie <3 if you haven’t seen it + you like cheesy, old school movies, i really recommend it!!!
11. Describe the memory of the last time you felt true happiness.
So I can’t remember the last time I did, bc my memory is horrifically terrible + probably getting worse as time goes on?? but i will tell you about one of the more recent times I remember! :D There is one crucial expository note for this memory- my brother-in-law makes THE best chili in the entire world. my brother and I were trying to recreate it because it’s such a simple but delicious + filling meal- I think this was our first time trying to create it? and it was SO chaotic, the tomato sauce and stuff kept popping and burning me and we weren’t 100% certain that we’d gathered the right ratios for the ingredients and it was just. madness lmao. Chance’s chili is one that you leave alone for multiple hours at a time (I think this is the case for all chili but i don’t cook often enough to know ;__;), and we were kinda 👀👀👀 because we weren’t sure it’d turn out right? But it did!!!! I vividly remember when it was finished and we taste-tested it + went oOOH FUCK! it wasn’t quite the same as chance’s but ohhh my god it was so good 🥰🥰🥰 but yeah!! we ate it all up and I think this was around the time I started my playthrough of Esteban for Dragon Age 2? which was one of my favorite playthroughs for the entire franchise... he’s just a simple ig beard model mage ;w; i wanted to show you what he looked like in this post but the formatting went wonky so ig i’ll just post him separately?? it’s 1000% in-character for him to infiltrate my jojo blog 😔
12. Name a song that makes you feel ethereal.
hm...I’d say it’s between Forget About or Feet of Clay! They’re both such light and tenderhearted songs, and when I listen to them I feel like I’m in an apartment kitchen slow-dancing with a love, and it’s so dark except for the slowly rising sun. I don’t know if that feeling could be described as ethereal? but it’s close enough for me
17. What is something you own that is important to you? What makes it so important?
I have a small collection of scripts from the shows I’ve been in, and two of the most important ones are from the plays my high school put on during my sophomore and junior years, The Nit-Wits and The Musical Comedy Murders of 1940, respectively! The Nit-Wits has a ton of sentimental value to me because it was the last show I genuinely acted in, and it was a show we had to pull together in 2 or 3 weeks!! We were originally going to do a murder mystery play for the fall, but none of the cast was feeling it and it just wasn’t going to come to life in time (honestly this speaks volumes for how much we weren’t vibing with it, because all of our shows came together at like.. the final dress rehearsals if not opening night lmao). I vividly remember we took a vote during rehearsals about whether or not to switch the show, and then we did and it was SO fun + chaotic!! My character was one of the only regular characters in the show, but I think everyone else had a lot of fun acting as actors who were hired to be maniacal, and that made acting off of them so fun! I remember there was also a night my friend Adonis almost tore the entire set down because he ran through a door and tripped over a set brace in his haste!! The Nit-Wits is hugely important because it was a really fresh acting experience for me, and again, my last time genuinely on the stage and not behind the scenes!
MCM is important to me because it was the first play I ever stage managed! I’d stage managed our musical the spring prior, but that was a huge undertaking and involved many different people and moving parts. Stage managing a play, at least at my high school, was a calmer and more intimate experience, and one I really enjoyed! Another huge reason I treasure MCM’s script is because it is one of the last shows I had with my friend I told you about- he was a senior. I have little notes and doodles from the cast and crew scattered throughout my book for this show, and I remember being so irritated by this because it meant I was losing space for stage directions, cues, and notes. Now, I’m super grateful to have these scribbles- it’s one of the only things I have left of him.
On that note, relating to him, MCM is also the show which birthed my most horrific theater horror story!! During one of the performances, I guess he forgot his line?? idk. But he ended up jumping six pages ahead of where the current scene was (I knew this bc I was following along in my book backstage + was frantically trying to figure out where he’d gone), which threw the entire cast, who were all tragically onstage, way off-track. This resulted in the most frightening game of script ping-pong I’ve ever seen: he’d skipped six pages ahead, so Adonis ended up saying a line from two pages after the six-page skip, and somehow someone else went!! oh I have a response to that line! And then said something like 9 pages back! I think the lead actress tried to ground everyone back to the lines they were supposed to be saying, but she ended up just saying a lot of their lines? And one of those lines that was supposed to be said by someone else was supposed to cue a black-out that someone got murdered in, but my lighting techie was SO fucking lost (we were both huddled over the script next to the breaker trying to figure out WHERE the hell we were! i think i had a flashlight in my mouth so I could flip through the book with both hands and thus faster??), so ofc the lights stayed up! I remember getting through this scene being the most painstaking endeavor of my entire life, but thankfully intermission was right after it! We actually extended intermission because the cast needed a hot second to fuckign RESET for Act 2 bc sweet jesus that was so bizarre...Needless to say, after that show we never messed that scene up again + everyone who acted in the show became super anal about knowing their lines as the years went on. The Six Page Skip became a legendary part of our hs theater Canon (like biblical canon ;w; although I don’t think anyone’s talked about it since my class graduated) alongside the times one of our ensemble dudes had to break through the roof of the girl’s dressing room to retrieve the keys to the theater + i got stuck on stage!
20. What’s the sweetest thing someone has done for you?
I really had to wrack my brain to answer this one, as I’m generally not the person people do things for, you know? This answer goes wayyy back, to 8th grade :O but so! there is mild exposition for this- when I started middle school, I lived in North Carolina, but we moved to Florida right before 7th grade bc my grandma is ill. We lived with my uncle while we were looking for a house, so I went to the local middle school bc why wouldn’t I? but in November, we finally found a house + my mom was like....So... are you going to switch schools or...I’d struck up some really solid friendships in this time, so i was like Mom I’d Rather Die OAO. So, we struck up a deal that I’d get to stay at that school on a zone waiver + that she’d drive me to school everyday. Sometime closer to the end of eighth grade she was like, yeah so.. I can’t do this for high school, it’s too much gas- which was valid! I was really sad about it, but I sucked it up.
Anyhow, fast forward to the last day of eighth grade, which was perhaps the saddest day I’d lived up until that point, mostly bc I knew I was probably never going to see all my friends again. My best friend, who I was like hardcore v close to + the person I shared all my wacky AUs and OC’s and headcanons with, was waiting with me for my mom to come pick me up, and then!!! When my mom pulled into the school she suddenly whipped out this lengthy letter she’d written to me about how much she enjoyed my friendship and how grateful she was that we were able to have lunch together (lunch was.. tragically ;__; the only time we really saw each other that year), and that she would never forget me! And she’d drawn me a ton of fanart from all the things I was obsessed with back then!! it was so much so fast, but then my mom was yelling at me to get in the car and I had to go :(
We kept in touch through email freshman year + fake-dated bc a senior was stalking me? ;J; and then we went to Megacon together! but I became really heavily involved in choir and theater after that, and we just kind of drifted apart :( we do follow each other on ig tho! It’s insane to think about her and that letter because on GOD ruth, that was a thinly veiled love letter and I never like... wrote her anything back that was as worthy as what she wrote me. But, she’s doing really well in uni now, so I guess it’s all okay? idk! ; o ;
23. What’s your zodiac sign? Do you think you fit the general characteristics of that sign?
I’m a Cancer!! and also a metal dragon by the Chinese Zodiac, which I’ve always thought was pretty sick! :3 I am 10000% your stereotypical Cancer, super emotional and introspective + often prone to tears ;u; My mom always said that dragons are steadfast and loyal people, and I think this also applies to me, to a fault. I checked around some websites to see what characteristics were often applied to metal dragons specifically, and it seems they are pretty strong-willed, ambitious, and generous? I don’t know if you could call me strong-willed or ambitious, but it’s all good ig.
25. What’s a song that gives off good vibes anytime you listen to it?
Ohh man, I went in on this question for Shannon, but bc I was digging around my library for Jules, I actually found an old fave! This song is from one of my all-time favorite musicals, Once on This Island- it’s The Human Heart! This song is so sweet, and god between the writing for the orchestra + the writing for the ensemble, this song is a straight masterpiece <3 I love love love the line, “Through your love you’ll live forever”, and although I am Hardcore Terrified of getting a tattoo, I really want that line tattooed on my body. if you have time, I recommend giving Once on This Island a listen!! I’ve never heard a show that uses its instruments and singers the way OoTI does (and holy FUCK it is so breathtaking live!!! I got to see it on Broadway and bro.... 🥺🥺 it was transcendental..)
#me when i talk to jules- floods her w a wall of songs#me when i talk to ruth- floods her with a wall of incomprehensible thoughts#the lov is stored in the walls of text! ; O ;#thank you again ruth!!!! this was really fun to write out and i may have cried while writing a few bits but it's fiiiine#i loved writing this 🥰#long post#like INCREDIBLY long post!!!!#sriracha ask game#fullmetal-the-last-alchemist
