personally I don't think I would love BSD as much if the characters were actually dying left and right all the time.

I agree the fake-out deaths are too frequent to the point of often looking silly instead of being a sad moment, and the lack of exploration on how the others react to thinking X or Y is gone in a manga most fell in love with for being character-driven does make you wonder why the fake-out deaths were there at all beside shocking the reader (which works less and less each time).

But if the main cast and friends were always dying, it would be an entirely different story. Grief is already an important theme, but it would become so much more present, so much more heavy. The themes of living and moving forward would be much more difficult to bear if it ever was only ever loss, loss, loss. The characters have accumulated so much loss already, mostly in their pasts, but the present is a lot more focused on keeping hope alive even when it's so very, very hard.

Bsd is more likely to hold your hand and tell you that it will be hard, but you will make it. It will suck, but you'll get out of it. If the story was "it'll suck, and you'll lose, and maybe sometimes win", it would be a wildly different story. It would be valuable in its own right! but not the same. And like I said, personally, I probably wouldn't enjoy that as much as I do what we have now.

i can’t draw so i’m going to need you guys to imagine ornithologist soap who uses the fact that his boyfriend ghost is a barn owl hybrid to better study wing anatomy.

First, watch this playlist of Atsushi's Japanese VA interviewing Dazai and Chuuya's Japanese VAs if you haven't already because it's hilarious

what's relevant here, is Chuuya's VA made a running gag out of calling Miyazawa Kenji "MiyaKen", using the same pattern used to get OdaSaku, and because of it they later joked about calling Nakahara Chuuya "NakaChuu", before realizing this is just the same kanji pronounced differently (中原 中也 -> 中中), which led to three grown men nodding while repeating "ChuuChuu" to each other

The conclusion: I suggest our Dazai, who was the one to nickname Oda "Odasaku", one day goes through the same string of thoughts, wondering what other people's names would sound like in this pattern, getting to Chuuya's name and realizing how much of a stupid, cute babyish name he gets out of it

Next time, Dazai greets Chuuya with a "ChuuChuu-chan" and Chuuya is so baffled he doesn't quite get to anger and outrage because he's stuck trying to process where the hell that came from???
