Inky, I have Some Thoughts.

Recently we got an ask about the Martian Stan AU, the idea that Ford would start making up a room for Stan in the cabin (Lab? Shack but not quite? Ford's house)

I LOVE this idea, and imagining all the things Ford would put up in that room brings me great joy. I feel like Ford is a very Love-through-actions-and-gifts type person rather than an emotional talk or tactile kinda guy

Which means Ford would probably LOVE thinking through a bunch of items to put in Stan's room for if when he comes back

The problem is that Stan and Ford have been so distant (both literally and figuratively) that Ford sort of. Doesn't know what Stan likes anymore.

He can list Stan's interests as a kid no problem, Boxing and building the Stan o war, but what else? Ford hasn't seen his twin in so long, he's forgotten (or maybe he's never really known) want kind of things would bring Stan comfort.

New clothes are a necessity obviously, but what styles? What specific types of clothing? Ford doesn't know.

Pencils and paper Stan to draw on, he liked to draw as a kid does he still?

Anything remotely nautical would get added in, but Ford doesn't know what else.

Everything Ford has to go off of is hazy, warm childhood memories and the gritty crackling of a radio speaker far out of range.

Its hard to shop for someone when you realize you don't really know them all that well.

(I literally wrote up a whole response for this and then my device died and it disappeared. So. Ahem)

This freaking au is just. Yes! It’s about the inherent tragedy of loving someone so much but not knowing them anymore. It’s Ford realizing he doesn’t know who Stan is, and then relearning through listening to his brother talk. Songs his brother likes and sings a lot, things and activities he mentions he’s tried and like or tried and hated. Ford learns that Stan likes to talk to himself while he’s working, making up little songs. He learns about what food Stan wished he could eat, what he misses about Earth. And he takes so,so many notes.

there’s probably a whole mini journal he’s started just dedicated to the person his brother has become. Things he wants to show him around gravity falls. Things he wants to tell him about himself.

he’s not going to learn everything about his brother this way of course. And the things he does learn are going to make that gap in knowledge even more apparent. But it’s about the healing, you know?
